The 500-kilometre track runs from Marree to Birdsville in southwest Queensland. Tom Kruse played himself, delivering mail, fuel and supplies to the isolated families along the world famous track. Visitors to Marree last weekend included Elizabeth and Kate, daughters of ‘The Back of Beyond’ director John Heyer. Also attending were Tom’s wife Valma, daughter Pauline and grand-daughter Jodie.
Mr Tobin said Mr Kruse was an iconic Australian. “He’s obviously as tough as tails but underneath he has a heart of gold,” he said. “People couldn’t get enough of him – there were queues from the time we arrived until when we flew out late Sunday morning.” Marree Progress Association publicity officer Sr June Andrew said the screening of ‘The Back of Beyond’ was another of the weekend’s highlights. “We could seat 300 people for the screening,” Sr June said.

Marree takes a ‘kruse’ down memory lane MARREE…Around 1000 people from across Australia converged on Marree at the weeknd to honour the legendary Birdsville Track mailman Tom Kruse MBE and to celebrate the 50th anniversary screening of ‘The Back of Beyond’. Mr Kruse, who turns 90 next month, was escorted to Marree on a Royal Flying Doctor Service aircraft made a special flight for the occasion. RFDS public affairs and marketing manager John Tobin said that Mr Kruse was swarmed by old friends and well-wishers seeking autographs, photos and a few words with the great outback legend. “The size of the crowd is a clear indicator of the esteem in which Tom is held,” Mr Tobin told The Monitor this week. On July 24, 1954, ‘The Back of Beyond’ was screened in Marree for the first time in outback Australia. Later that year it was awarded ‘best film’ at the prestigious Venice Film Festival. The film introduced Tom Kruse and his 1936 Leyland Badger mail truck to a generation of Australians. Most never forgot the extraordinary images of the man and his battered trucks doing battle each fortnight with the sand and

“But 485 people wanted to see the film so there had to be a second screening.” To honour Tom Kruse’s achievements, a special 50year tribute double DVD ‘The Tom Kruse Collection’ including ‘The Back of Beyond’, ‘Last Mail From Birdsville – the Story of Tom Kruse’, ‘The Outback Mailmen’ and ‘The Postman’ has been compiled by Ian Doyle with part-proceeds supporting the RFDS. Subway on the way to Roxby ROXBY DOWNS...Roxby Downs’ central business district is undergoing a series of shake-ups this month with new businesses appearing and established businesses closing doors. Just a fortnight after the announcement that Woolworths will open a branch in Roxby Downs, comes the news that sandwich specialists ‘Subway’ is also taking up residence in Richardson Place. The go-ahead for construction was given late last week by Paway Enterprises, owners of the Port Augusta Subway franchise. Scott Sard, director of Paway Enterprises, told The Monitor – Your Community Newspaper that interest in the Subway franchise was originally generated by Roxby Downs residents. “People from Roxby Downs would eat at the Port Augusta store and ask when we would open in their town,” Mr Sard said. “It seemed that the community was keen to have us open in the area and so we responded.” Following positive results from an initial feasibility study, a site inspection ensued and the disused ‘Roxby Casuals’ shopfront was selected. “The location is very handy because it is part of the shopping complex and is directly across from the pool,” Mr Sard said. “And the shopfront parking is another plus.” While it is not clear exactly when shop-fitting and construction for Subway Roxby Downs will begin, Mr Sard is aiming for the next six weeks. “There is a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ work required before we can start the refurbishment,” Mr Sard explained. “We hope to finalise financial matters as soon as possible. “Then it will be a matter of fitting the store and transporting the necessary equipment. “By opening day we will offer the full range of Subway products, including low carb wraps, toasted sandwiches, cappucinos, espressos, cookies and all.” Subway lovers will not be the only people to benefit from the store’s arrival – local sporting clubs are also set to profit. Mr Sard intends to assist Roxby’s junior sporting teams by offering sponsorship. “Exercise and sport are valuable elements of the healthy lifestyle Subway encourages,” he said. “But it is also a way of contributing to the community that supports you. “This is also why we will offer a number of traineeships to interested employees.” The traineeships will cover Certificate I, II and III in Retail Operations with the opportunity to extend to Frontline Management. Positions will be advertised in The Monitor – Your Community Newspaper in coming weeks. Early applications can be emailed directly to Mr Sard at ppawayen@bigpond.net.au.

What do you think of the new survey findings about The Monitor?

OLYMPIC DAM…Almost two thirds of the 12 bilbies released outside the reserve area by Arid Recovery last month have already fallen to feral predation. A total of seven bilbies have died, just weeks after being released outside the feral-free environment with the 60km2 reserve. Six of these bilbies’ remains were recovered by Arid Recovery staff, from the stomachs of feral cats and foxes. They have been living and breeding in the Reserve since that time and, at last estimate, the population size was 250. During the last year, population pressure has led to some bilbies digging out under the Arid Recovery fence. One of the “escapee” bilbies was re-caught and his condition was far superior to that of the bilbies within the reserve, adding to concerns regarding over-population. The bilby was returned to the reserve where he promptly dug out again. Evidence of his survival was present after more than six months. One of the long-term goals of Arid Recovery is to extend feral species management and ecosystem restoration beyond the fence. Fenced reserves provide unnatural boundaries to natural dispersal of native animals. With few or no predators present, the carrying capacity of the reserve will be reached, having a negative effect on the populations within. “It is hoped that through the development of more effective broad-scale feral species control methods, feral cat, rabbit and fox numbers can be kept at a managed level where locally extinct native species Annual RFDS fundraiser ‘Boogie in the Bush’ can once again inhabit South Australia’s arid zone, Photographs - Pages 12-13, and story - Page 3 free of exclusion fencing,” Ms Hill said.

Former residents disappointed by Roxby’s lack of ‘town pride’ Dear Sir/Madam, Having lived in Roxby Downs during the late 80s, we enjoyed a recent visit and were impressed with the growth of the town and infrastructure within. However, we were very disappointed with the entry to Roxby Downs. Ugly ‘hoon’ skid marks along the roads, tourist information bay outdated and peppered with bullet holes and an unkempt Caravan Park. First impression is a lasting impression. Town pride is all-important – maybe it’s time for a clean up. Sincerely, Jeanne and Dennis Warren. THE MONITOR - Your Community Newspaper

Volunteer support sees another successful ‘Boogie’
NEW DIRECTIONS...Monitor newspaper staff - from left, graphic designer Nicki Trewin, editor Seonie Lyon and manager Mandie Arnold - celebrate new directions within the newspaper and recently-released figures which have underlined The Monitor’s growing success as a community newspaper in the Far North region.
Survey highlights local regard for The Monitor ROXBY DOWNS…Friends, advertisers and supporters of The Monitor gathered to hear about changes at The Monitor and celebrate the release figures from a recent survey which showed The Monitor as the most read paper in Roxby Downs. A reorganization of the papers personal has seen Mandie Arnold promoted to the role of manager and the engagement of a new journalist Andrea Nielsen. Although now residing in Gladstone, editor Seonie Lyon will continue to edit the paper and will be involved in developing new products for the paper. “I am passionate about The Monitor and the role it plays in this community,” Mrs Lyon said.
The paper’s position was confirmed by the publics responses to questions on readership included in the Roxby Downs Householder Survey undertaken between November 2003 and February 2004. The results released last week show The Monitor is clearly the most-read newspaper in Roxby Downs and has had a profound influence on the community or Roxby Downs.
VOLUNTEERS...Long-time local RFDS Auxiliary volunteers, from left, Bronny Warren, Marie McCormack and Shirley Gow at ‘Boogie in the Bush’ at the weekend. The event, which has been running for 12 years now, began as a combined birthday party for several local
residents. Today it is one of the region’s most popular RFDS fundraisers.
Manager Mandie Arnold said “this is a fantastic outcome for a new paper”. “The Roxby Reports 2001 identified the need for better method of delivering community news that was accessible to the whole community and The Monitor has definitely filled that void.” “A measure of success of any country paper is how much it contributes to its community,” she said. A total of 94 per cent of participants who responded to the survey said The Monitor “kept them informed of important local and regional issues and 95 per cent said it kept them informed of local and social news while 89 per cent said the paper had improved the sense of community in Roxby Downs.

ROXBY DOWNS…More than 400 people attended the annual ‘Boogie in the Bush’ at Roxby Downs Racecourse at the weekend. Support was very good again this year, according to organiser Peter Paisley. More than 20 volunteers, including members of the Roxby Downs RFDS Auxiliary and local emergency services, showed their support on the evening by selling drinks, tickets and safeguarding patrons. “I’d like to thank all the volunteers,” Mr Paisley said. “We had a good lot of bands and I think everyone had a good time.”
“The Monitor’s success has ‘run against’ the trend for community and country papers which have tended to close down or amalgamate with bigger publications in recent years,” Mrs Lyon said.

TREE DAY…St Barbara’s Parish School students Nicholas, 5, and Meg, 6, of LGB were among many students across the Far North region to participate in Schools Tree Day activities last Friday. The project was supported by WMC Nursery who donated more than 350 trees and shrubs to the region’s schools, individuals and various institutions.
Students get down and dirty for schools tree day FAR NORTH…Schools Tree Day Held in association with Planet Ark’s National Tree Day, saw hundreds of trees and shrubs planted across the Far North region last Friday. The project was supported by WMC Nursery who donated more than 350 trees and shrubs to the region’s schools, individuals and various institutions. More than 350 trees and shrubs were donated to Roxby Downs Area School, St Barbara’s Parish School and Church, Mintabie Area School, Andamooka Primary School, Spud’s Roadhouse and individuals in Roxby Downs. The local effort was organised by
WMC senior environmental scientist John Zwar. Mr Zwar said the plants and shrubs used were known to do well in arid areas. “To flourish though, they will need to be watered once a week during summer,” Mr Zwar said. “Provided they are well cared for they should establish fairly quickly without any problems. “When they are established, they will only require regular watering to be kept looking their best.” Last year’s Tree Day saw more than 247,000 people join together to plant 2.2 million native trees and shrubs at over 3,340 sites across the country.
OLYMPIC DAM…The State Government is undertaking a feasibility study OF suggested storage sites for low and intermediate-level radioactive waste Olympic Dam is one of the sites being considered and is the only option identified so far. The study is still in its preliminary stage with tenders for the contract work closing in August. “I would expect that the study would begin within a couple of months and would run for something like six months – but the details have yet to be finalised,” Andrew Johnston, senior scientist radiation protection division of Environmental Protection Agency, said. “The contractor will be asked to look at a range of sites, one of which will be Olympic Dam. “However, while no other sites have, as yet, been identified for the study – it will be up to the contractor to propose some sites.” Mr Johnston explained that the selected site would be used strictly for the storage of state-generated waste. “[There is] currently no single storage receptacle of this type, for this waste, in South Australia. “In the 1980s contaminated soils were stored near Broken Hill and that material was drummed and stored in the ‘Radium Hill’ tailings dam – but that’s not considered best practice these days. “This new study arises from the audit of radioactive materials done by the EPA recently and one of the recommendations was that the State consider its options for storing or disposing of the state’s radioactive waste – this is the first step in the process.” Mr Johnson also explained the nature of the ‘radioactive waste’ that will be stored on the site selected as a result of the feasibility study. “The sort of material we’re talking about in relation to this study – low-level and intermediate-level waste – at the low end you’re looking at contaminated clothing, glassware, gloves and laboratory waste. “At the intermediate level you’re looking at sealed sources used in scientific and medical operations, old ones that are no longer useable need to be stored until a means of disposal is decided for them. “These sources are very common in industry and scientific applications – you even have some of these sources in use up there on site at Olympic Dam.” Western Mining Resources spokesman Richard Yeeles told The Monitor last week that no decision has yet been made on siting of the waste receptacle and any decision would be reliant on the outcomes of the study.

OUTBACK BLOSSOMS...Recent rains have prompted the desert to break out in blooms - and local tourism operators are encouraging visitors to come and see them while they can. These native blooms were pictured at the Arid Recovery Reserve, 16km from Olympic Dam, along the borefield road. FAR NORTH…The Far North region’s tourism operators are inviting visitors to ‘come see the bloomin’ desert’. The recent rains and resulting blooms of native blossoms have highlighted the region’s need for a tourism strategy centred on the Far North’s unpredictable wildflower displays. Local tourism product development officer Page 4 - Thursday, July 29, 2004
Alex Barker is meeting with representatives of the SA Tourism Commission next week to discuss strategies. “We need a way to take the best advantage of wildflowers when they show up,” he told The Monitor. “It’s a big attraction, especially for the ‘grey nomads’ who would normally travel to WA in September to see the
wildflowers – they can come here now. “The ‘Wildflowers of WA’ is a natural tourism icon and they’ve got organised package tours – from day tours to 15-day visits. “Their industry benefits hugely from the wildflower season but our rains are more sporadic, and we’d like to come up with something that allows us to promote our own wildflower displays.”

JOURNALIST...The Monitor’s new journalist Andrea Nielsen, 20, already hard at work. The Monitor – Your Community Newspaper welcomed its newest member of staff, journalist Andrea Nielsen, 20, this month. Born in Dubbo, NSW, Andrea grew up in Adelaide before moving to Horsham, Victoria, to begin her career in print and radio journalism. “I’d always been interested in writing,” Andrea said. “I used to write movie and book reviews for video stores and local street rags. “As a kid I used to make my pocket money entering poetry competitions and entering stories for women’s magazines – I guess it was inevitable that I would find my way into the profession.” Andrea said she was drawn to the media industry for several reasons. “I love the fast-pace atmosphere of media and journalism,” she said. “Plus I love meeting new people – everyone who has met me will already know I’m a total gasbag.” In addition to talking and writing, Andrea lists the performing arts and horses as her passions. “I’m an absolute drama queen and I love being in the spotlight,” she said. “If I wasn’t in journalism, I would want to be an actress. I’ve been involved with a lot of amateur theatre and loved it all. “I’ve also been into horse riding since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. I’m going to take part in the Hooves and Horns Cattle Drive in September and am unbelievably excited.” When asked about her initial impressions of Roxby Downs, Andrea said she was enthused by experiences in the town so far. “The town strikes me as a fantastic place to live,” she said. “People have been incredibly friendly and helpful and I’ve been amazed at just how much is going on. I really look forward to my time in Roxby.”
SUPERMARKET SUPPORT...South Australian Ambulance Service volunteer team leader Dawn Kroemer presents Foodland Manager Darren Pedler with a certificate of appreciation. Also pictured, front, is SAAS ambulance officer and Foodland employee Ian Gudger. ROXBY DOWNS... South Australian Ambulance Service expressed its appreciation to supportive local employers last week, awarding them with framed certificates. Foodland Roxby Downs manager Darren Pedler was among the recipients. Mr Pedler has supported the SAAS, SES and CFS for several years, allowing employees who volunteer with any of the services to leave shifts to answer call-outs. SAAS volunteer team leader Dawn Kroemer said such support was invaluable. “We are incredibly grateful for Darren and Foodland’s assistance throughout the years,” Mrs Kroemer said. “I hope that other employers will consider lending their support in the same fashion.
Mrs Kroemer explained that businesses did not stand to lose financially by allowing staff to leave work for callouts. “The SAAS reimburses the business for wages paid to the employee during their absence. “So even though another staff member might need to be called in, the business does not have to pay two wages.” Mr Pedler urged other employers to consider adopting a similar policy. “We live in a small town and we have to support each other,” he said. “Besides, you never know whose lives are being saved with a call-out. “It might just be someone you know and care about.” Employers wishing to support SAAS or find out more information should contact Dawn Kroemer – ph 0408 847 790.

ROXBY DOWNS… A local resident, unaware of the x-lotto draw results, checked her ticket last week and was surprised to find that she had won $14,000. The winning ticket was purchased at Roxby Downs Newsagency. FAR NORTH…The State Government is allocation $100,000 to explore new areas for opal in the State’s far north. The exploration program is a collaborative effort between the government and opal miners involving drilling in prospective areas around Coober Pedy and Wellbourne Hill. COOBER PEDY…Families and Communities Minister, Jay Wetherill announced that the State Government has granted $35,000 to the Coober Pedy Youth Sector Network to allow for the refurbishment of the old Coober Pedy Town Hall so it can be turned into a much-need youth centre for the area. The money will fund air-conditioning, fire safety and security equipment, furnishings and furniture as a contribution towards the new Youth Centre. OODNADATTA…A grant of $20,000 has been awarded to the Dunjiba Community Council for its Oodnadatta “Women’s Shed” program, which will be used to fund air-conditioning, furniture, office and program equipment to renovate the building. The grants come from Community Benefit SA which distributes $4 million each year from gaming machine taxes to charitable and welfare projects. FAR NORTH…A core group of 15 to 20 young elite local-level indigenous athletes, aged 15 to 18 years, from Coober Pedy, Ceduna and Port Augusta, will be selected to go on a three-day camp with two fullytrained athlete ambassadors and a group of community co-ordinators after a new $600,000 program named “Online Dreaming” that brings elite athletes to country regions to promote mental, social and emotional well-being among Indigenous youth was announced on Monday July 26, 2004. ROXBY DOWNS…Extra parking space is being built for the CFS and SES complex on Olympic Way, enabling the access road to remain clear. SES controller Scott Cheers said the facility will also improve access to the shed. “And improved access for volunteers means a faster and safer response to call-outs,” he said. Local contract companies Olympic Dam Transport and SBS are donating the materials, labour and machinery necessary to complete the project. “We’re very appreciative of their support,” Mr Cheers said. The extensions to the existing parking space is expected to be finalised in the next two months, but will be dependant on the availability of the volunteer members being available to carry out the required work. In addition to the added parking, trees and shrubs will be planted to provide shade and beautify the area. OLYMPIC DAM…Olympic Dam operations will host a ‘job readiness training program’ next month, aimed at training up potential employees in suitable skills to work at Olympic Dam. This program is aimed at local and indigenous applicants. Graduating trainees will receive a Certificate I in Job Readiness and some credit toward a Certificate II in Metalliferous Mining, combined with Senior First Aid Certificate, forklift license, loader operator license and work experience. The training program will be limited to 12 people, runs for seven weeks and is conducted by the Spencer Institute of TAFE.

Still lots to do when it’s all ‘Said & Done’
JETSETTING... AFS exchange students Cielo Albrecht, left, and Connie Ramirez returned home to Santa Fe and Santiago, respectively, earlier this week.
ROXBY DOWNS...The countdown is on for the premier of local filmmaker Jason Stringer’s latest production, ‘Said & Done’. Filming came to a wrap early this week. Jason has now begun the arduous task of whittling 13 hours of footage into a 30 minute film. “Post production is the most time-consuming phase in the film-making process,” Jason said. “The first step involves selecting the best take in every scene. “Once they have been laced together in se-
quence, you are left with the ‘first cut’. “That’s when sound editing begins.” Local band ‘Antacid’ and Jason’s younger brother, Michael, will provide the soundtrack for ‘Said & Done’. The recording process is expected to take two to four weeks. Sound effects or ‘foley’ will be the last to be added to the track. The final edit is likely to be completed sometime in August. A test screen will be then be held to guage how the film is received.
Jason said he would consider ‘Said & Done’ a finished product if positively received at the test screening. Despite the task ahead of him, Jason anticipates an October 9 release for the film. Also being released will be ‘The Making of Said & Done’. It is also in the post-production phase and is being edited by fellow, local film maker Danny Clark. The behind-the-scenes documentary will feature on ‘Said & Done’ DVD which will be available for purchase from the time of screening.
‘Adios’ as Cielo and Skatepark nearing Connie head home construction phase ROXBY DOWNS... Cielo Albrecht and Constanza ‘Connie’ Ramirez, both 17, returned home earlier this week following a six month stay in Roxby Downs as part of the AFS exchange program. Both Cielo and Connie said they had loved their time in the town. Cielo, who hails from Santa Fe in Argentina, said she would miss Roxby Downs even though it was very different from what she initially expected. “I thought the country would be very tropical and that there would be
rivers everywhere,” Cielo said. “I didn’t know there was ‘outback’ in Australia.” Despite her initial surprise, Cielo said she immediately liked Roxby Downs and the locals. “Everyone is so relaxed and friendly here. “And the town is very modern – everything is old in Santa Fe. Connie, from Santiago, Chilé, also enjoyed the cultural differences of Australia. “Things are much more formal in Chilé,” Connie said. “But there’s other differ-
ences as well. “Roxby is so safe – I could walk around alone and go out at night. “Santiago has five million people and you can’t really go out alone, especially after dark. “And the really good thing about being in a small town was getting to know everybody.” Language was a challenge for both girls. Though Connie and Cielo both learnt English for several years before coming to Australia, the pair explained their initial difficulties in communicating. “There is so much slang that we never learn in schools,” Cielo said. “It took me a while before I could understand what people were saying a lot of the time. “Australians shorten their words, like ‘wanna’, ‘gonna’ and ‘g’day’.” Connie, who learnt at an English institute, had a similar view. “We don’t learn the words with contractions such as ‘we’ve’ and ‘we’re’. “We also got taught things like ‘cookies’ instead of ‘biscuits’. “But I think rhyming slang was the hardest thing to learn. “I didn’t know ‘dead horse’ was sauce. it literally at first. “And everywhere I travelled people had different slang.” Travel was a shared highlight for Connie and Cielo. “I went to Sydney and I went on a safari with the other AFS exchange students,” Connie said. “It was a lot of fun and is one thing that will be with me for the rest of my life – I will never forget it.” Cielo also enjoyed her travels which took her across South Australia. “I got to see Ceduna, Port Lincon and Adelaide,” Cielo said. “I loved the Adelaide beaches. They are beautiful.” Both girls agreed that they had not seen enough of Australia. “I am going to come back as soon as I can,” Cielo said. “Then I will travel right across the country.” Connie said six months had only been enough to whet her appetite for travelling. “I will have to come back to Australia,” she said. “And hopefully I will get to see New Zealand and other places as well.” Connie and Cielo both cited returning to Roxby as being high on their list of travel priorities. Connie said she was also considering returning to work in Roxby. “I have always loved science,” she said. “Maybe I will get a degree and come back to work at Olympic Dam. “The exchange has opened my eyes to all sorts of possibilities like that.”
FULL STEAM AHEAD... Senior structural engineer of the skate park Mark Ellis, Roxby Downs Youth Centre’s Bec and Sue Penglase, and Roxby Downs Leisure Centre’s Laurence Duggan survey plans for the project. ROXBY DOWNS...The final design for Roxby Downs’ $100,000 skate park has been decided and construction is set to begin within the next few months. Funded by council, Personal Touch Australia and a Government Sport and Recreation grant, the skate park was designed by Adelaide designer and skater Ashley Watson. The project is being overseen by local youth services coordinators Laurence Duggan and Sue Penglase. Mrs Penglase said she became interested in the project when working at council. “When I first started working there, I found a letter from students at Roxby Downs Area School,” Mrs Penglase explained. “It was a request for a skate park – I thought it seemed like a great idea,” she said. “So I approached the kids and asked
them if they were serious about such a facility”. The response was an overwhelming ‘yes’. “That was a year ago and now things are really happening.” Two designs were recently presented to a volunteer youth committee who chose the final design. Quotes on building materials and construction costs are now being gathered. Ms Penglase said there was no definite date for when the facility will be ready for use but it would be completed as soon as possible. “When ready, the skate park will be available to the general public,” she said. “It will be suitable for skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMXers. “Shade will be provided and the area will be floodlit at night. “It will be a wonderful asset to Roxby Downs’ youth.”

Sister Pat’s
thought for the day
Feel the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from completing a task that is performed to the very best of your abilities.
My heart is pounding; sweat pouring down my forehead into my eyes. I push myself harder than ever before. Two hours and twentyfive minutes, running up the ragged tracks winding their way to the top of Mt Riddell in the Yarra Ranges. No stopping on the way, swallowing water clumsily whilst running, it dribbles down my chin and lands on my shirt, which makes no difference to its already sweat drenched appearance. After setting this task for myself about four months ago, I have finally done it. I make my way around the final turn leading to a lookout, equipped with benches and picnic tables. I bend forwards resting my hands on my knees, breathing heavily and feeling ready to drop. I move myself over to a bench seat at the edge of the lookout, where a group of tourists are drinking tea and chatting. I wipe the sweat from my face before removing the hair tie from my hair and then retying it. Time to rest awhile before heading down to shower and change ready for my meeting at 2.30pm. I gaze out over the valley, taking in the breathtaking views. It’s so peaceful up here. A piercing scream fills the air and all previous thought immediately leave my head. I jump to my feet, startled, and walk quickly over to the tourists who are all gathered around the edge. The sick feeling in the bottom of my stomach tells me someone has fallen, and up here the chances of survival are pretty slim. There is at least a one hundred and fifty metre drop to the nearest ledge, and the rocks are jagged and razor sharp. I grab the CDMA phone hanging from my shorts and hastily dial triple 0, quickly explaining the situation on the ambulance officer I am transferred to. I
turn to the group and see terrified, worried and tear-stained faces looking back at me. I tell them there will be no help for at least twenty minutes, and that’s only for the rescue helicopter to arrive. Any hope they had was pretty much gone by now. I leave the group to comfort each other and peer over the edge and see a body, not moving by the look of things. I doubt he’s alive. I take a seat and listen out for the helicopter, which arrives after about thirty-five minutes. Conscious of the time, I leave the group and the rescue team to and start my decline down the mountain track. I glance at my watch and realise I’m going to be late for my meeting if I don’t pick up the pace a bit, so I start to run with caution so as not to meet the same fate as the tourist. As the track winds close to the edge, I hear the helicopter coming close to me. I look up at it flying overhead and as I do so my foot lands awkwardly on a rock, twisting my ankle sharply and painfully, throwing my body down. I immediately throw my hands palm down toward the ground to soften the fall, but they are sliced open as they come in contact with a jagged rock. I yell out in pain and terror as I continue slipping towards the edge. As I go over I make a desperate grab for the ledge. I scream out for help as I dangle helpless and in agony as the ledge digs sharply into my cuts. I begin to slip, unable to handle the pain, all the while screaming desperately for help. I can’t hold on any longer and see my hands come away from the grey rock as if it’s in slow motion, my stomach lurches and I hear my own deafening screams as I feel myself falling…

FIVE Cs...Learning their five Cs from the ‘Rainbow Fish’ story, from left, Nicole Scholefield, Melissa Behan, Adam Ryan adn Kurt Johnstone.
Learning lessons in courtesy and friendship In class we read the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’. We talked about how the Rainbow Fish was lonely and why he had no friends. We also talked about the five Cs cooperation, consideration, challenges, commitment and courtesy. We discussed how we deal with people who are like Rainbow Fish. In the end the Rainbow Fish realised what he had to do to make friends and what he needed to do to keep them.
RDAS teacher profile - Sally Cormack Where did you spend your early years? I was born in Orroroo, SA and have very fond memories of my childhood years at Carrieton a very small country town in the Flinders Ranges. I attended Carrieton Rural School and travelled to Orroroo School for my secondary schooling. My family moved to Leigh Creek in 1982 and I spend the remainder of my secondary years there. We arrived in Leigh Creek at an exciting time when the old town was being relocated to “Leigh Creek South”. What is your current role at RDAS? I am a teacher of a Reception class of 18 students. The class is predominantly boys – 14 boys and four girls – a very enjoyable challenge! I commenced at RDAS in Term 2
of this year. I am a member of the ASPA Committee (Aboriginal Student Support and Parent Awareness ) and The Arts Committee. What role were you doing before coming to RDAS? Aside from be-
The following handy hints for improving learning are extracted from Andrew Fuller’s book ‘Help Your Child Succeed At School’. Keep an eye out for more of these handy hints in future issues of The Monitor.
Handy hints for improving learning Hint 3 - Organising a learning space for your child - lighting. Natural or indirect lighting such as a desk lamp is best for learning. It is best for your child not to study under fluorescent lighting as it is related to raised cortisol levels in the blood stream (an indicator of anxiety and agitation).
Cortisol also suppresses language functions. If you are purchasing a desk lamp try to avoid fluorescent lights. From ‘Help Your Child Succeed at School’ by Andrew Fuller www.inyahead.com.au

ing a ‘full time” mother of twin fiveyear-old girls and a 14-month-old boy, I was the Director of the Roxby Downs Kindergarten (held this position for approximately 11 years). Roxby Downs Kindy will always be a special place to me. Who is your hero/someone that you look up? I would have say the Princess of Wales, Princess Diana. She was a very beautiful person – inside and out and certainly made an impact on the world she left behind – particularly through her extensive charity work. What do you like best about RDAS and Roxby Downs as a whole? I have been warmly welcomed into the Area School and very well supported in my new role – special thanks to Kate Underwood. I am very impressed by the level of professionalism, energy and commitment that exists here to increase the learning outcomes for students. Roxby is a great place all round – it must be as I am still here after 13 years! Would you encourage young people to take on teaching as a career? If young people are passionate about it – “Yes”. You can really make a difference to a child’s life even it if is with something ‘small’. Teaching is a career that makes many demands on an individual – physically, emotionally, mentally. It certainly involves careful thought – in terms of career choice. On the positive side – the rewards are the smiles on those little faces – this is simply the best!
Dear Parents and Friends, Open Day Friday 13th August…Many parents and friends do not get much of an opportunity to see all of the great programmes, facilities and students that we have at this school. Often we are judged by those very few who may act inappropriately from time to time and brand the vast majority of students negatively. Students at RDAS are by far some of the best we could wish for, our facilities are world class and so are some of our programmes. Our students and staff invite you to come into the school to observe and view classes and activities as they run. You will be able to have a tour of the facilities, see your child/ren in class and join with us all for Morning Tea. The programme is currently being finalised and will be forwarded at the earliest opportunity. Our students are proud of their school, their work and their classrooms. Please set aside the time to come into the school and dispel any unfounded perceptions by seeing first hand what is on offer here. Our slogan for this event is: Our Community Our School Our Students Our Future We look forward to having you join us. Student Free Day Tuesday August 3rd…Next Tuesday 3rd August the whole staff will be engaged in a training day with Ian Lillico. The theme of the day will be ‘Boys in Education’ but this does not preclude girls being included in good practice. Parents will also have an opportunity to hear from a nationally acclaimed trainer and speaker on this subject. There will be a parent session on the same evening in the Roxby Downs Theatrette. Learn how you can help your child do better at school, develop as an individual, engage in homework, deal with peer pressure etc. These sessions are unfortunately notoriously poorly attended. Please take up this opportunity so we can justify the expense of holding them. Staffing Changes…We welcome Miss Nicole Richter (Year 1 teacher) who joins us as our first student returning as a teacher. Well done Nicole and congratulations on your recent engagement. Mrs Ally Christall will be working in the Stretch and SHIP programme replacing Mrs Pam Pedler who is on leave this term. We welcome back Mrs Helen Bennie from her “world tour” to her role as Primary counsellor and class with Ms Litster in Year 5/6. We welcome Mrs Jill Harvey to the Library position to replace Mrs Amanda Trasy. Mrs Trasy will be taking accouchement leave at the end of # Nicole Richter Week 4. We farewell Mr Brighton Mawodza who resigned as of the first Monday this term to take a position in a Christian School in Adelaide. His replacement will be determined over the next couple of weeks but in the meantime a Permanent Relief teacher, Mr Darren Curyer, will be in the role. We also say farewell and good luck to Mrs Kathy Hoffmann who finishes up this week to begin accouchement leave. We wish Kathy and Mick all the best. Mrs Amanda Partington will assume a full time teaching role until a suitable replacement for Mrs Hoffmann’s position is determined. Welcome To Our New Headstart Students…We offer a special welcome to our latest Headstart students in Miss Underwood’s class. Anyone who has had a child in this class cannot fail to be impressed. Good luck to these little ones pictured elsewhere in this section. We hope that they have many enjoyable and productive years at school. Jim Michalanney, Principal. Thursday, July 29, 2004 - Page 15

Roxby homes sold within 24 hours by Gail Heritage address the housing quickly”. ROXBY DOWNS... Roxby Downs homes are being sold within 24 hours of listing and rentals are becoming increasingly scarce with many families forced to join long-waiting lists. The on-going real estate boom saw a local real estate firm sell “11 houses in 10 working days” in June, and rental properties continue to be in huge demand with a waiting list for Western Mining housing of up to 20 months. Some real estate operators are calling for more land release and housing development in Roxby Downs in anticipation of a population rise if Olympic Dam operations continue to grow. A WMC spokesperson said the company would
shortage in Roxby Downs to ensure long term needs were accommodated. “The management team at Olympic Dam is very aware of the issues arising from the current shortage of accommodation available in Roxby Downs,” she said. Families were currently waiting 18 months for one to two bedroom homes, 20 months for three bedroom homes and 12 months for four bedroom homes, she said. WMC had now also acquired 20 homes in Woomera. Roxby Downs’ oldest and largest rental provider Leicester Management Services (LMS) Managing Director Rick Treloar said properties were “getting snapped up
He said LMS already had applications for any current and upcoming rental properties, and supply was short. Mr Treloar said LMS began business in Roxby Downs in 1994 and experienced a similar shortage of properties during the 1997/98 WMC expansion. However he said when some families left in May 99 after the project completion, both rental prices and house prices fell. “We do need housing however the release of land must reflect supply and demand, without reaction to short term demand and increased numbers in the town,” Mr Treloar said. Western Raine and Horne co-principal David Murley said “the demand for homes is

very, very high – if you are thinking of coming to Roxby and buying get in very, very quick.” Western Raine and Horne currently had very little available and the local branch of Lyn Andrews said properties were selling quicker than they could be supplied. “We broke our property management record and sales record for the month of June….we sold 11 homes in 10 working days,” Lyn Andrews property manager Ali Tucker said. Mr Murley said the new feasibility study and possible Olympic Dam expansions had created new possibilities for workers and their families, however the community needed more family housing to meet demand. “I think Western Mining really has to back up the families for the community’s sake – if they want the workers they have to do something about housing development,” he said. “It’s like Rundle Street
up here.” He said workers shouldn’t be forced to spend long periods of time away from families in order to work in Roxby – housing should be available. “If they want to grow the town and better the community they have to keep the families together,” Mr Murley said. Wardle Real Estate manager Martin Stringer said local consultant Geoff Chick was also experiencing the real estate boom and the lack of housing was becoming a “big issue”. He said most families would prefer to buy their own home instead of renting depending on their circumstances and how long they were going to stay in town – the lack of properties available to both buy or rent was a big problem. “It’s going to become a big issue….(the) expansion is going to make it harder.” “(It’s) going to get to the stage that people are not going to want to go up there,” Mr Stringer said.

RFDS AUCTION AND GOLF DAY
Annual event a family effort For 15 years the organisers of the annual RFDS Golf Day and Auction SA’s single largest Royal Flying Doctor Service fundraiser event – have been cajoling, creating and chasing auction sale items for this annual event. But for the Lamb family of Olympic Dam, the event has been a ‘whole family’ affair, on both sides of the auctioneer’s gavel. It is the family atmosphere of the day, according to auction committee member Val Lamb, that has made the auction and golf day such a successful event. “My kids have grown up being part of it - it’s been a whole-family effort,” Val said of husband Ken and children Darren, Donna and Kelli-Jo. “The support of our family and the employees at Olympic Dam Transport has been huge - they’ve all given much more of their time and support than we ever could have asked for, as have their husbands and wives,” she said. I’ve got a lot of personal satisfaction out of being involved,” Val told The Monitor last week. “Seeing the days prove as popular as they have been has been very rewarding, and I don’t mean just the money going to the RFDS - I just love the whole family day concept and it’s become pretty important to a lot of people. “It’s a great day and families can sit back and relax because the kids have room to move, they can run around and play. “This year, to support that family atmosphere and stop things running so late, we’ve changed the format a little bit there will only be nine holes of golf and the auction will start earlier.” The event originally begun as Ken Lamb’s private protest against the excess of donations being made by early Olympic Dam suppliers to the Roxby Downs Golf Club as weekend golfing prizes. Ken didn’t want to join other local and state contractors in heaping prizes and donations on a small part of the community he wanted to see some of the wealth shared around where it was most important. The RFDS was the obvious recipient for this local lover of the SA outback and its varied communities.

FAMILY EFFORT...Ken and Val Lamb, long-time coordinators of the RFDS Auction and Golf Day, will hand over the reins of the event to fellow RFDS Auxiliary members after next month’s event.
New leadership for RFDS event Olympic Dam volunteers Ken and Val Lamb will step down as coordinators of the Roxby Downs RFDS Golf Day and Auction following this year’s event next month. After 15 years, the Lamb family will hand over the reigns of the event to the Roxby Downs RFDS Auxiliary in 2005. Local auxiliary members have played an important part in the success of this local event, providing essential support and infrastructure for the event - however, there is no doubt that the Lamb family and their Olympic Dam Transport employees have been the driving force behind the event’s success over the last decade and a half. “It’s time for us to take a break now,” Ken told The Monitor. “We’ll continue to support the event any way we can but it’s time for someone else to run it all.” Roxby Downs RFDS Auxiliary president Shirley Gow told The Monitor the auxiliary had been instrumental in
the running of the event since its inception and was keen to play a greater role in the event’s organisation in 2005. “The auxiliary will step up its support for the event and take up the reins,” Mrs Gow said. “We’ve still got to sort out the logistics but we’re keen to take it on. “Our main event each year is, of course, golf day. “But we have ‘Boogie in the Bush’ every year, our ‘Irish Christmas’ and regular raffles and events. “Our volunteers are very dedicated and hard-working, and people around the town support them. “Every year, people step and help, everyone’s always willing. “Just the donation tins add up, everyone chucks their change in, and the Western Mining tours bring in a little extra every year. “It’s the community volunteers, not just those on the committee who
really make it all possible through - and all those people who, every year, are out there doing stuff at Boogie or the golf day.” A team of around 12 dedicated Auxiliary members, complemented by wider community support from
volunteers and donors. “To me, all that money that’s raised, it’s the community that needs to be recognised,” Mrs Gow said. “It’s them who come, and willingly give the money they give they’re the ones who deserve the big thankyou.”

RFDS AUCTION AND GOLF DAY # 2004 is the 15th year of the Roxby Downs RFDS Golf Day and Auction # In 2003, the event raised $106,000 – almost a quarter of the RFDS’s total SA income from volunteer events and auxiliary fundraising. # In the past 15 years, the Roxby Downs RFDS Auxiliary, in cooperation with the Roxby Downs RFDS Golf Day and Auction, has raised more than three quarters of a million dollars for the RFDS. # Just 12 committee members make up the core of the RFDS Auxiliary in Roxby Downs. However, each year this group is supported by a team of dedicated community volunteers, business donations and local residents. # The RFDS air ambulance will visit Olympic Dam airport around 120 times this year.

Volunteer efforts essential to RFDS Volunteer efforts are absolutely critical to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, according to the SA Public Affairs and Marketing Manager John Tobin. “Last year, as an example, our volunteer auxiliaries and support groups around SA raised about $400,000 fo the RFDS,” he told The Monitor. “But the auction alone raised more than $100,000 of that amount. “That shows you how successful the auction and golf day has become, and how important the Roxby community in particular has been. “Over the past 15 years, the Roxby Downs Auxiliary has raised more than three quarters of a million dollars for the RFDS. “Ken and Val Lamb epitomise what the RFDS is all about - they are very much community people who over the year have given hundreds of hours of their own time to support the RFDS and in so doing are helping to provide a vital health service to everyone in the community “We’ll be sorry to see them take a back-step but we’re very pleased that the local auxiliary is going to take control of the event, especially after they’ve already played such an important role in the auction’s success over the years.” Mr Tobin said the Roxby Downs region was a significant centre for both RFDS services and community support. “When events like this occur – the auction, the ‘Boogie in the Bush’, the Irish Christmas – they’re not just supporting everyone around Roxby Downs, they’re helping everyone in the outback areas of SA and the Northern Territory. “OD is typically where we fly to help people in that surrounding area - while we fly in to a number of places all over the far north, it is one of our more central points. “This year we’re going to fly there around 120 times.”

AUCTION ACTION...The Mason, Gray, Strange team at work at the 2003 RFDS Auction.
More auction action in 2004 Ever wanted to know who is behind the men behind the gavel and the fastpaced gabble at the Royal Flying Doctors Service auction each year? Here’s your chance...introducing Jamie Codling and Andrew Maros of Mason Gray Strange Auctioneers and Valuers. Jamie and Andrew first became involved with the event in 1994 after meeting Ken Lamb. “Ken approached us at an auction we were hosting,” Jamie said. “He told us about the RFDS auction and asked if we’d give him a hand,” Jamie said. “The rest is history.” What Jamie fails to mention is that, for 10 years, he and Andrew have provided their services free-of-charge for the event. In their first year, the duo auctioneered more than $21,000. Last year’s figures topped $106,000. In fact, over 15 years, the boys have seen more than half a million dollars worth of donations cross the auction’s truck bed at the annual RFDS auction.

Jamie said he continued to support the event because he considered it worthwhile. “There’s no doubt that the RFDS is a deserving recipient,” he said. “I’m proud to be part of something that so significantly contributes to the service. “But all credit really has to go to Ken and his family – they are the driving force and put so much effort into it. “The truth is, Andrew and I go because we have so much fun. “It’s the only auction a can host standing on the back of a truck while having a smoke and drinking a beer.” Jamie touted other examples of why he enjoys his involvement with the RFDS Auction so much. The sale of a $1500 haircut to Phil ‘Gypsy’ Gilleland and Merv Rogers was among them. “There have been some fantastic times in Roxby,” he said. “And I’m very keen to keep coming back. “Ken is a great bloke, it is for a good cause and is all a bit of fun.”
WINGS FOR LIFE This year the Royal Flying Doctor Service will fly into Olympic Dam around 120 times - that is once every three days. The need for our service is ever increasing. Whether it is an emergency evacuation, a transfer of a critically ill person or the provision of regular health clinics to a remote community, the Flying Doctor will be there when needed. But we need your help please We have commissioned four Pilatus PC-12 aircraft into service since 2003 in South Australia at a total cost of $24 million. It is entirely our responsibility at the RFDS to meet this cost and it is only through your support that we can meet this huge commitment. RFDS AUCTION AND GOLF DAY Aircraft appeal The first organisation of its kind, the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) is recognised as the world’s pre-eminent provider of aero-medical services. In 2003, as part of a national coverage, RFDS Central Operations provided aero-medical emergency and primary health care services to more than 47,000 people in South Australia and the Northern Territory. Nationally, over 200,000 people were assisted by the RFDS last year. Aircraft are at the forefront of RFDS service delivery. To maintain efficient service delivery, RFDS Central Operations has purchased four new Pilatus PC-12 turboprop aircraft. Costing $6 million each, these aircraft are medically fitted for their role in saving lives and assisting people in times of need. In the past 12 months the RFDS has commissioned four new aircraft in SA at a total cost of around $24 million. Whilst the Federal and State Governments support the RFDS with operation expenditure, it is the service’s responsibility to raise the funds to meet these capital costs. Against this background, RFDS Central Operations (servicing South Australia and the Northern Territory) has initiated a major fundraising campaign with a target of $6 million to fund the purchase of one aircraft. Generations of Australians have helped to keep the doctors flying. Since its earliest beginnings the RFDS has looked to its supporters to help buy and replace aircraft. This appeal is as urgent and real today as it was 75 years ago.
Less golf - but just as much fun! This year’s golfing events at the RFDS Auction have been reduced to just nine holes in order for the auction to start earlier, in an effort to better cater to young families. Golf coordinator Don Crawford said the event would be a 9am tee-off for the day’s event. Teams of four are invited to register their interest in this ambrose event where each team-member hits off and the golfers play from the best shot of the four. To be part of the day, register your interest now with Di Beveridge – ph 8671 1026, as course numbers are limited to 30 teams. The Golf Day is a social and fun day with local police selling drinks and food as fundraisers on the course and ‘fining’ golfers – all in the name of charity. “Last year attracted a full field, including increased teams of all-ladies,” Don told The Monitor. “It’s definitely a fun day and if you’re not a golfer, it’s a good day to give the sport a go.”
Serving SA and the NT RFDS Central Operations provides a relevant and comprehensive health service across South Australia and the lower half of the Northern Territory. Patients anywhere in Australia are only ever two hours flying time away from help. Currently the service has around 70 pilots, doctors and nurses providing an extensive range of healthcare services including: emergency evacuations of victims of illness or accidents who are in a serious or potentially life-threatening condition; retrieval flights with teams of medical specialists for the critically ill; · inter-hospital transfers for patients requiring transfer to a centre with a higher level of care; clinic flights to isolated communities with doctors, nurses and physical and mental health care practitioners; and much more.
GOLFING BLUES...Mardi Cheers, Denise Hobbs, Bec Schutz and Anna Daly showed their colours for RFDS Golf Day in 2003. This year, the annual golf competition will be reduced to nine holes to allow for an early auction start. Organisers invite golfers and novices alike to come along for some fun on the fairways.

CHEQUE IT OUT...Andamooka Roos Football Club president Steve Cox presented 15-year-old Todd Roberts with a cheque to finance his involvement in the under 15 zone carnival in Adelaide.
Todd in the zone Local footballer Todd Roberts, 15, recently competed in the under 15 zone carnival for North Adelaide Football Club. Todd, who plays for Central Augusta in the Spencer Gulf League, trains with the Andamooka Roos who paid for his flight and accommodation. Andamooka Roos Football Club president Steve Cox said their sponsor-
ship was well-deserved. “He’s definitely devoted to his football,” Mr Cox said. “And the Roos is his family club. His father Joel was a grand final player with the team,” he added. “We were just glad that we could help. We’re very proud that he was picked.”
Todd was scouted from the SGL following an excellent performance in trial matches and day-long training sessions at Laura. “They were long days but it was worth it,” Todd said. “I was pretty happy with how I played for North Adelaide. “It was all a good experience.”

TJ’s out of the pool and on the courts Roxby Downs netballer Tara-Jane ‘TJ’ Hill, 12, has been selected to play for South Australia in the national netball championships’ 13 and under division. TJ, who plays junior and B-grade netball locally, competed in a series of South Australian Primary Schools Amateur Sports Association trial matches in Adelaide. After four training sessions, she was announced as one of 12 girls to make the squad. In September, TJ will travel to Canberra to compete for her state, playing wing attack and centre. But there’s much more travelling to be done in the meantime. “I have training in Adelaide each Sunday morning,” TJ told The Monitor last week. “So I have to travel down with mum and dad each week for five more weeks.” TJ’s dedication doesn’t stop there though. The talented youngster also made a state-side swimming team earlier this year, competing in Queensland. Later that month TJ was named Port Augusta Council’s ‘sportsperson of the month’, putting her in the running for ‘sportsperson of the year’. Despite her hectic netball routine, TJ still manages to make swim practise every morning, often swimming
as much as six kilometres each day. So how do parents Tammy and Darren Hill feel about TJ’s sporting schedule? “We’ve racked up a few miles but it’s all worthwhile,” Mr Hill said. “I’m just really proud of her and hope my other kids are as keen on sport as she is.” Mrs Hill is no less enthusiastic about her daughter’s sporting endeavours. “I played state netball when I was younger, competing in the under 18s,” she said. “It’s very satisfying to think of her following in my footsteps.” But the love of netball extends even further back in TJ’s family. TJ’s grandmother Joylene Heneker has been playing netball for 52 years and is still going strong. TJ said she hoped to be enjoying sport for just as long. “Right now my goal is to represent Australia but I’m not sure if it would be in netball or swimming,” she said. “Later I’ll have to choose which sport to stick with. At this stage I think it will be netball.” At the tender age of 12 though, TJ has time to focus on present opportunities and enjoy her achievements. “Making the team has really made all the training worthwhile.”
TAKING CENTRE STAGE... TJ Hill, of Roxby Downs, will play centre and wing attack for South Australia in the national championships’13 and under division. This is the second state-side team TJ has been selected for this year.
