Early warnings could prevent spread of SWINE FLU
L
ast week The Monitor tried in vain to get official information about the spread of swine flu in Roxby Downs.
This week it seems our information was correct and there is a growing number of cases in the town. The question remains, “do we have the right to know the virus is here” so we can take appropirate action? Young mums with babies and pregnant women pose a greater risk than most and those who suffer from asthma and other health problems all have concerns about the spread of H1N1 influenza. When contacted this week, Member for Giles Lyn Breuer said, “I have made enquiries with Minister for Health’s office regarding swine flu, and there is no policy of not letting communities know if they have identified cases. “Everyone with flu symptoms are now visiting their GPs so the figures are subject to change constantly. “Not everyone who has symptoms are tested, only those at risk, or the system would col-
lapse. “In fact most people with flu probably have swine flu.” Ms Breuer added, “I would see no purpose in hiding cases from the community, they have a right to know. “I would hope everyone who has contact with flu cases or have symptoms would be responsible and stay at home as much as possible. “While there have been a number of deaths, they are people with other underlying serious medical conditions.” “The high number of pregnant women in Roxby is of concern as they could be at risk, but most are very healthy and should have no problems. “I suggest they discuss their situation with their doctor.” The MP denied there is a conspiracy to cover up swine flu. “If people have concerns I suggest they contact my office. “Roxby Hospital can also provide advice and support and are doing an excellent job, along with the local GPs in looking after the town,” concluded Ms Breuer. Local Liberal candidate for the seat of Giles, Chad Oldfield said he is also concerned like all
other residents. “If there is swine flu here or not, everyone should be taking the proper precautions to ensure their kids and their own safety. “We know it’s around in the state and whether it’s here or not we should all be doing the little bits and pieces we can when it comes to hygiene. That will stop the spread of it,” said Mr Oldfield. SA Health officials are constantly upgrading the figure of those affected by the virus and what is more concerning is the daily news of death rates in Australia and across the world. The current number of confirmed cases in SA is over 1700 with at least 17 people in hospital, five of whom are in intensive care. With another three deaths confirmed last week in SA the total number in the state has reached five. Although for most people, H1N1 is like a seasonal flu, that doesn’t mean it’s mild – like a cold. The problem with H1N1 is that it is extremely contagious.
