Olympic Dam looks to the future Community throws its support behind Olympic Dam feasibility study OLYMPIC DAM…The recent announcement of a $50 million feasibility study into the future of Olympic Dam by WMC Resources has been welcomed by the local community. The announcement was made by premier Mike Rann in cooperation with WMC Resources CEO Andrew Michelmore on Wednesday, May 26, 2004. The study will determine whether Olympic Dam will go ahead with plans to double the existing mine’s capacity, at a cost of between $2 billion and $4 billion by the end of the decade. “It’s great news and it reinforces that the state and WMC sees Roxby Downs as playing a key part in the SA economy,” Roxby Downs town administrator Bill Boehm said. “It’s great for the morale of the community and particularly local business,” he said. “The review is an ideal opportunity for the work of the community board and planning process to feed into the review process. “Already we have a strong partnership approach, but it would be great to follow on from the community plan process with an assurance that the review will be based on more than just economics, but also focus on the well-being of the community. “This is a chance to make Roxby Downs more attractive, not just for investors and businesses, but also for potential residents. “Any taskforce would hopefully look at trying to maximise the number of Roxby Downs residents.” Richard Yeeles, WMC group manager – corporate affairs, has heralded the announcement as demonstration of the “significant potential development of the Olympic Dam operations”. “This is a continuation of a study announced two years ago – this phase of the work will complete the pre-feasibility study. “The next phase of the study will consider the extent to which the town requires further development to support Olympic Dam. “While the current focus of site is to improve returns from the existing operation, the workforce has welcomed the company’s desire to further develop Olympic Dam.” The study will investigate: An additional 72km of drilling to improve understanding of the undeveloped southern deposit.
Suitable mining and processing methods for the southern deposit and development of a ‘whole-of-deposit’ mine plan. Environmental studies including the scoping of a new environmental impact statement. A detailed investigation of options for future water and energy supply to the operations. Preparation of a logistics plan for the operation, including the possibility of linking Olympic Dam to the national rail network. Identification of future land requirements, support for the Roxby Downs township and associated infrastructure. Olympic Dam currently has an annual production capacity of 235,000t of copper, 4500t of uranium and 100,000oz of gold. Preliminary studies at Olympic Dam have indicated a rise in production rates to 350,000tpa if underground mining is extended, and 500,000tpa if the operations incorporates open pit mining. However, a community board spokesperson has stressed the need for Olympic Dam management and the community to work closely to plan the next expansion phase. “It’s vitally important that Olympic Dam incorporate the community’s plans into this new feasibility study,” community board spokesperson Phillipa Weltner said. “Without strengthening the town’s services and community morale, you just won’t attract quality people to the mine. “In its planning, Olympic Dam needs to consider the effects this kind of rapid population growth has on the community’s services. “In particular, they should address local needs for mental health support, drug awareness and counselling, as well as the more day-to-day issues such as housing, child care and family support networks. “This proposed expansion is good news for the region and a chance for the community to continue to grow in a vibrant and vital manner. “It’s also a great opportunity to see some of the issues highlighted in the community plan process taken on board.”
