Red Sands welcomes new President By Zak Zeptner

R

oxby Downs local Vicki Hatty has taken on the role of president of the Red Sands Branch of the Cancer Council. Helen Edwards, the President since the Foundation’s inception in 2006, has officially stepped down from the role in preparation for her relocation from town and is confident Vicki will do a fantastic job as President. “I’m really excited for her,” said Helen. “I kept approaching people and asking them to put their hand up and then at our last meeting Vicki said she would do it. “I’m sure she will take on the role with a lot of zest and it’s a rewarding role where you get to meet different people and talk about different experiences.” Vicki has only been a member of the Red Sands Foundation for a short time, however she is committed to raising funds and spreading awareness of the dreaded disease. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year so that’s why I got involved in the first place and I’ve also lost my Dad and Granddad to cancer. “It’s a good cause and the sooner we get to finding a cure the better.” Vicki first became involved with the Red Sands Foundation through last year’s Relay for Life. Her husband was a member of one of the teams and as Helen was looking for cancer survivors to join her in the survivors walk, Vicki gave her a call. “That was a big step for me, being part of the walk, because you’re putting yourself in the open, letting everyone know that you’ve had cancer. “It’s pretty exposing but I suppose you can use it to let people know you’ve been through it and you have survived and that others can survive it too. “It reinforces that you are not alone.” As President, Vicki hopes to continue fundraising in Roxby Downs for the cancer council in the hopes that it will help to provide a better outcome for people with

cancer in the future. She also hopes to be around for anybody that just needs to talk. Even though Helen has officially stepped down from the Red Sands Foundation, she is still helping Vicki to find her footing, giving her the vital pieces of information she will need to know about the Foundation, contacts that could prove useful and people who can help with tasks. With the success of the Pink Ladies Golf day last weekend, Vicki and the Red Sands Foundation will be focusing their attention on the upcoming Daffodil Day and Pink Ribbon Day. Stepping right into the role, Vicki has already received a call from the South Australian Cancer Council welcoming her into the President’s role. As a survivor of cancer, Vicki knows what it is like to have your life disrupted by the disease and is more than willing to provide a shoulder and ear from people who need someone to talk to. She does advise, however, that she is not a trained counsellor and can do little more than share her experiences and listen. Cancer is a disease that can touch anyone and if left untreated can be fatal. It is for this reason that both Vicki and Helen advise anyone with a suspicion that something in their body is not right to see a doctor immediately. “Don’t hesitate, do something as soon as you’ve got that first little inkling; don’t hold off and say it might go away in a few weeks, you’ve got to follow it through. “Unfortunately some cancers are very quick and the sooner you find out the better.” To contact Vicki in regards to the Red Sands Foundation, call her on 0409 254 016. “I wish Vicki well in talking up the position,” said Helen. “I know she will enjoy it and I wish the rest of the group well too. “Have lots of fun, enjoy it and keep spreading the word and bringing in the money. That’s what it’s all about.”
