Innovative Solution to Smelly Problem

Police Target Highway Speeders

ROXBY DOWNS...The solution to Roxby Downs’ smelly sewers has arrived - all wrapped up in a little plastic bag. Roxby Downs Council is one of just three councils in SA trialling BioRemedy - a ‘microbiological inoculation’ for goo-filled pipes and sewers. Odours in the sewer systems at Roxby Downs are caused by build up of fats, oil and grease from domestic waste in the pipes. This build-up can turn rancid quickly, not to mention severely hinder pumps and other machinery. BioRemedy is a self-generating bacteria, bred specifically to break down waste products through the secretion of enzymes. The process not only breaks down wastes faster, heading off any nasty odors - but it also re-oxygenates the associated waste water. This then allows for a faster turn-around when waste hits the sewer lagoons where water is recycled for use on town ovals and parks. “In an area where pool owners can lose the entire volume of their pool twice over in a summer, we have to treat water as more precious than gold,” Council’s Water and Sewerage Manager Trevor Kroemer said. “By breaking these wastes down in the pipes, the final product spends less time in the sewerage ponds and there’s less chance of losing huge volumes through evaporation. “We’ll also save a fortune on maintenance.” Continued on Page 4

FAR NORTH REGION...Police are targetting drivers on the Stuart Highway following a series of fatalities on the road this year. The Rural Highway Saturation Program has been prompted by six fatalities in the Far North service area so far this year. The annual average for the region is three. Local and highway patrols are combining to blanket the highway. “If you’re on the highway and you’re speeding then you’re going to be caught,” Sgt Richard Hobbs told The Monitor this week. “All six of the fatalities so far this year happened on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday,” he said. “None of the people killed were wearing seatbelts. “We talk about the ‘Fatal Five’ - the five main contributors to deaths in motor vehicles. “In this region we mostly see deaths from speeding, fatigue or a lack of seatbelts.” Sgt Hobbs warned local drivers to be especialy careful when travelling long distances in the upcoming school holidays.

GERM WARFARE...Council’s Water and Sewerage Manager Trevor Kroemer, right, and Council Contractor Colin Kroemer are fighting Roxby’s clogged drains with a new weapon - BioRemedy.
