ast Friday, BHP Billiton Chief Executive Officer, Marius Kloppers, said that the company was encouraged by the comments of the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, that her Government will open the door for negotiations with the objective of achieving consensus. “The industry has consistently been calling for the Government to properly engage on all aspects of the tax and we welcome the opportunity to do so. We agree with the Prime Minister that ‘the uncertainty around the introduction of the proposed super mining tax must be ended’. “BHP Billiton has consistently stated that any new resources tax must be prospective, competitive, differentiated and resource based,” Mr Kloppers said. “It is very important that this issue is resolved quickly and consistently with these four principles for the benefit of all Australians. They underpin investment decisions, are central to Australia’s reputation and affect our employees and shareholders.” In response to the Prime Minister’s request, BHP Billiton has immediately asked our agencies to suspend all advertising as a sign of good faith. “We look forward to working with the Government in this new way so as to quickly find a solution that is in the national interest”, Mr Kloppers said.

Recent power blackout a coincidence T

he three hour power outage for the whole township of Roxby Downs between 8am and 11am, on Saturday, June 19 caused by a fault on the main feeder line from the Olympic Dam Mine and had nothing to do with the planned power line maintenance schedule. BHP staff was on the scene quickly, however the problem proved elusive to find for a time, but was eventually located and isolated. BHP then restored power to Roxby Downs at around 11am.

According to Roxby Power, it was a coincidence this problem occurred while Roxby Power was undertaking its own series of power outages related to their maintenance plan. “Many customers called the Council’s on-call officer wishing to know why they were off the power when their zone was not scheduled for that time. It was then explained to them that the outage was general and not related to the Roxby Power work. It was appreciated when the on-call officer received an SMS thanking all for restoring the power as soon as was possible.

“The Roxby Downs Council wishes to thank the BHP staff for attending to the failure on the 19th of June promptly and with great professionalism,” said Electrical Services Manager from Roxby Power, David Hallett. Residents of Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam Village are reminded that BHP now has a Power Outage Hotline on 1800 728 472 that will keep everyone informed of details relating to outages as a result of a fault on the main township feeder line. The Hotline service is updated by BHP staff as new information becomes available.
