Cleaning up the local community FAR NORTH AND OUTBACK…Clean Up Australia Day, on Sunday, March 6, will see Far North and Outback residents pull on the rubber gloves and hit the streets to tidy up their home-towns.

Australians are the second largest producers of waste, per person, in the world.

A total of 6.9 billion plastic bags are used in Australia every year. Of these it is estimated 50 million plastic bags end up as litter - killing countless marine animals and wildlife.

Cigarette butts make up 58 per cent of the litter found in public places and leach dangerous toxins into the environment while 20 per cent of the rubbish collected on Clean Up Australia Day in 2003 were containers which could have been recycled.

In Roxby Downs, Clean Up Australia Day will kick off at 9am, with registration and a community barbecue being hosted in the Lions Park.

Organisers are targeting the dunes between Tutop Street and Stuart Road, the dunes between Myall Grove Caravan Park and the Dunes Estate, as well as Olympic Way between Axehead Road and Burgoyne Street.

OLYMPIC DAM…WMC Resources employees in the Olympic Dam Environment, Health and Safety team have begun fundraising to see their workmates and bosses ‘shave for a cure’ this month.

When Alison Hartman decided to take up a bet that she wouldn’t shave her head for $100, she decided to make it worth the money – and join the World’s Greatest Shave for a Cure next week.

So far, the EHS ‘shave for a cure’ team - comprising David Drummond, John Warneke, Chris Schultz, Steve Ingham, Matthew Wicking and Kirstie Robson - aims to raise $1000, with funds already pouring in.

The Olympic Dam on-site event is one of a series of local ‘shaves for a cure’ throughout the Far North and Outback this month.

Support needed for junior sport PHOTOS...The Monitor farewelled photographer Lindall White and welcomed Neil Ryan this week.

A new face behind The Monitor’s lens ROXBY DOWNS...The Monitor farewelled staff member Lindall White this week - graphic designer and photographer.

Lindall and her family have moved to Telowie, near Port Pirie, and will be sadly missed by her office workmates.

Lindall joined The Monitor last year as a part-time photographer and extended her involment at the community newspaper to include graphic design and layout.

This week, she is replaced by social and sports photographer Neil Ryan who can already be seen out in the local community, getting to know people.

Neil’s work as a draftsman has taken him all over the world, where the sights he saw around him inspired him to build on his long-time love of photography.

Neil now runs his own freelance photography business and hopes to use his experience at The Monitor to build a career in photojournalism.

Dear Editor, It is with some disappointment that the committee of the Roxby Downs Junior Basketball Association is writing this letter to highlight the lack of support that the committee receives.

It appears that there is some thinking amongst the community at large that if they are not on the committee and pay the relatively low fees then their total responsibility to help the committee run a smooth, fair competition is absolved. Perhaps people are not aware of the hours that are put in by the helpers voluntarily on a weekly basis – we provide 32 hours of umpires, 32 hours of scorers, 32 hours of coaching and 16 hours of desk duty. A total of 108 hours per week, which converts to approx 1600 hours per season.

(This takes no account for training). All of this help is currently provided by either the committee or relatively few dedicated parents, whose support is greatly appreciated.

We understand that not all parents have the ability to coach or umpire, but rest assured, learning how to score or do desk duty is very simple and we will always assist in your learning. If you are able to umpire please consider volunteering an hour or two, the book is always available at the stadium and future weeks are written up ready for filling in.

A part of the support that we expect is that parents assist us in ensuring we have their children’s commitment to attending all trainings and all games unless notified.

The coaches who volunteer their time are wasting it if your children do not attend training and thus learn skills, team tactics and responsibility to their team mates.

Junior Basketball has a duty to the community to ensure that property isn’t damaged. All trainings are to be attended by only the participants involved in that team or age group. Anyone else should not be on the basketball courts and will be asked to leave. As a courtesy could you please place your rubbish in the bins provided as you leave.

Unless some of the above is taken to heart and acted upon, future seasons could see less age groups involved and higher fees to pay for umpires and help.

When local artist Dave Kovac dropped off his cartoon for this week’s issue of The Monitor I was struck by the relevancy of his image. Dave has an ability to capture, succinctly, in pictures, the mood of our combined communities. And right at this moment, a lot of us are juggling for the upcoming Outback Fringe Festival.

My family and I are looking forward to this year’s bigger and better event, as are most people. But over the past few months I have noticed an awful lot of volunteers running wild to get this year’s event ‘just perfect’ - despite the fact that, again, support has been amazing.

I see the same thing in so many community arenas the community board and community plan are good examples. And I’ve got a tiny little piece of advice for all those people...Relax! It’s never going to be ‘just perfect’.

Trust me on this one. I’ve got a tiny team of six local staff members putting out a newspaper for five core communities every fortnight - where other newspapers would have as many as 15 employees - and every time we take on a new staff member I hear them say “maybe when I settle in it won’t be so chaotic”.

But it will be. And, as every loyal Monitor reader knows, we never quite get it ‘just perfect’ - but we get it pretty damn good almost all the time. (If I do have to say so myself.)

Some things just work that way when you’re juggling so many different things - clients, sponsors, contributors, photographs, stories and advertisements. Or, in OFF’s case, about a hundred events, sponsors, volunteers and contributors.

And as for the community plan? Well, I’ve got a theory for that and other community projects as well.

Who cares if someone doesn’t want the same thing you do for the community? Who cares if it doesn’t turn out the way you hoped? If everyone was working for the community, with their own vision of what would benefit our Far North and Outback - then we can’t lose can we? And if you can’t work with someone, maybe you can work alongside them and head in, at least, a similar direction.

Whenever I get caught up in the flurry of ‘just perfect’ I take a step back and think of my wedding, or all my children’s birthday parties (12 of them so far - parties not weddings). I figure you can plan, you can hope, you can prepare - but on the day you just have to sit back and enjoy it for what it is.

Saying that, I’ll see you at the Outback Fringe Festival on March 10, 11, 12 and 13!

NEWS FAMILY ADDITION… Local brothers Troy Darling, 6, and Jeremy Andrews, 8, welcome the latest addition to their little family – ‘Bart’ the Red Kangaroo.

Native animal adoption ROXBY DOWNS…Gay and Steve Darling have a long history of raising a family in Roxby Downs – but not all their family members have been the conventional kind of children.

Bart the Red Kangaroo is the latest example of one of the Darling family’s more unusual family additions.

As the local representative of the Native Animal Network, Gay Darling has fostered kangaroos, wallabies, bilbies, bettongs and native birds over more than 15 years.

Most of her charges have been orphaned as a result of motor vehicle collisions, including her latest family addition – Bart.

“It’s very important when people hit an animal on the road that they stop, and check for any live, pouch young,” Mrs Darling told The Monitor.“We can save these babies but it takes a lot of specialised care and a lot of support.

“They have special feeding and hygiene requirements, but I am happy to support people who want to raise them themselves.”

Get set to save lives ROXBY DOWNS… Roxby Downs’ SA Ambulance Service hosted its annual recruitment night last Tuesday, February 22, 2005.

Almost 10 people attended the information evening, at the Roxby Downs ambulance sheds, where local volunteers Dave Pattenden and Dawn Kroemer joined the regional unit’s assistant manager Craig Stephens in inviting local residents to join the Roxby Downs team.

“Our annual recruitment drive is aimed at boosting the numbers of the Roxby Downs team,” Mr Stephens told The Monitor last week.

In Roxby Downs - with its high birth rate, large percentage of shiftworkers and constant population turnover maintaining a strong local team depends on numbers.

This year’s recruitment drive will kick off a new training program for Far North volunteers.

Volunteers will receive intensive training in occupational health and safety, driving and ba-

This initial training will be followed up, six months later, with the more advanced hands-on training that will, eventually, see volunteers receive a nationally-accredited Certificate 4 in Basic Emergency Care.

“This training will allow skilled officers to go on from their initial training and receive recognition if they want to go on to something like nursing,” Mr Stephens said.

The local training program will kick off on May 21, 2005.

ROXBY DOWNS…The annual Roxby Downs mystery poker run will be held on Sunday, March 6 – leaving the Lions Park at 1pm. Trophies will be awarded for the best hand, best American motorcycle, best Japanese motorcycle and best ‘up to 250cc’. ANDAMOOKA…The volunteer-run Andamooka Country Women’s Association Op Shop will trial a program of extended hours this month. The shop will be open on Fridays, 9am to 4pm and Saturdays, 9am to 1pm. These new hours will be complemented by a ‘morning cuppa’ on Fridays – with tea and coffee available at the Op Shop for a small donation.

All proceeds raised from the Op Shop are held locally and go back into the surrounding communities when needed for various projects and people in need.

Andamooka welcomes back its past residents ANDAMOOKA…Andamooka residents will host a ‘Welcome Back to Andamooka Weekend’ over Easter, from Friday, March 25 to Sunday, March 27, 2005.

The weekend is a fun reunion for current and past residents.

So far, activities planned include a community barbecue on Good Friday followed by a Market Day on Saturday, from 10am.

ANDAMOOKA…Long-time local Dave Kovac opened his studio gallery in Andamooka last month.

The event was well attended by family and friends, eager to view the facilities Dave and wife Kelli-Jo have built to promote his business.

Mr and Mrs Kovac recently returned to the region after spending a year travelling around the world where the pair saw some of the world’s most famous artworks.

“We saw the paintings of Van Gogh, Da Vinci, Degas,” Mr Kovac told The Monitor. “When I saw all these paintings, I saw their early stuff and their later development and it hit me, you just have to practice, practice, practice.

“When you see the progression of their work over time it makes you just want

to keep putting pen to paper.”

Which is what Mr Kovac intends to do in his newly-opened studio gallery.

The gallery – where the long-time Andamooka and Roxby Downs resident specialises in local scenes, animals and birds rendered in pastels and inks - is open to the public by arrangement. To view Mr Kovac’s work, phone 0409 726 252 or 8672 7232.

“People have been great and shown a lot of interest and enthusiasm,” he said.

“I hope people will take the time to pop by and see what I’ve produced, I’m sure they won’t be disappointed.”

Mr Kovac’s work will also be displayed during the upcoming Outback Fringe Festival ‘Bazaar’ markets and at the Roxby Downs Cultural Precinct Gallery from April 16 to May 9.

A 34-year-old Roxby Downs woman was reported for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol (.104 per cent) on February 26, 2005.

A 43-year-old Roxby Downs woman was reported on February 25, 2005 for driving an unregistered car.

A 20-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for driving without due care on February 25, 2005.

A report was received on February 25, 2005 in relation to stalking.

Also on February 25, 2005 in an unrelated incident, an 18-year-old Roxby Downs youth was reported for misuse of a motor vehicle.

A complaint was received on February 24, 2005 in relation to fuel being siphoned from a car overnight in Finnis Street, Roxby Downs.

Two reports were taken in relation to mail being taken from letter boxes on February 23, 2005. One on Irrapatana St and the other on adjoining Eyre Court.

A report was taken in relation to two assaults and an indecent assault on February 23, 2005. (Offences occurring 1999 in Port Augusta).

A 17-year-old Roxby Downs youth was reported for driving without due care on February 22, 2005.

A 25-year-old Roxby Downs woman was reported for assault family member on February 21, 2005.

An 18-year-old Roxby Downs man was arrested for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and attempt arson of a motor vehicle on February 21, 2005.

Also on February 21, 2005, a 16-yearold Roxby Downs youth was arrested for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

A report was taken on February 21 in relation to an outdoor table in Richardson Place being set alight.

A 57-year-old Roxby Downs man was arrested on February 20, 2005 for unlawful threats.

A 36-year-old Roxby Downs woman was reported for driving an unregistered and uninsured car without a licence on February 20, 2005.

A report was received on February 20, 2005 in relation to a man being threatened with a firearm.

Reports were received of a man being seriously assaulted and an attempt made to burn his vehicle on February 20, 2005.

The above two items are related and all offenders have been arrested.

Also on February 20, 2005, a 57-yearold Roxby Downs man was arrested for unlawful threats.

A 19-year-old Roxby Downs man was arrested for disorderly behaviour and offensive language on February 19.

A report was received of a car being stolen from Myall Street, Roxby Downs on February 19, 2005.

The vehicle was located in scrub off the bypass road after having left the road and being rolled.

A report was also received on February 19, of another car being stolen from Pioneer Drive, Roxby Downs. This vehicle was located undamaged on Burgoyne Street.

A report was taken of a mobile telephone being stolen after being placed on a table and left unattended in a local licensed premises on February 18, 2005.

A report was received a of a car window being smashed on Axehead Road, Roxby Downs on February 18. Appears offenders may have used a miner’s pick stolen from the car at the same time.

A 37-year-old Adelaide man was reported for driving an unregistered and uninsured car without a licence on February 17, 2005.

A report of a serious criminal trespass and theft of a wallet from a room at Camp One, Olympic Dam, was received on February 17, 2005.

A 52-year-old Olympic Dam man was arrested on warrants on February 16, 2005.

Xstrata offer extended…Xstrata’s revised offer of $7.20 per share, originally due to close on 28 February 2005, has been extended until 24 March 2005. As this offer is just inside the low end of the Independent Expert’s value range, WMC Directors have declined to endorse this offer. WMC’s Second Supplementary Target’s Statement sets out the company’s response to the revised offer and has been mailed to all shareholders. You can find out more by visiting www.wmc.com/xstrata New GMO…There’s a new addition to ODO’s senior management, with Bruce Farmer joining the team as General Manager Operations – Copper Uranium.

Bruce and his wife Rosemary have moved to Roxby Downs from Sydney. “I’m really pleased to be here and be part of Olympic Dam at such a critical time for our future,” he says. “The ODO team’s effort in 2004 NEW GMO... has taken the operation Bruce Farmer. to new levels in safety, production and consistency, while the reliability process is also bearing fruit. “The drilling programs through 2003 and 2004 are proving what a wonderful mineral resource we have here…it’s now our job to deliver to the best of our ability and to the mine and plant’s capacity, the copper, uranium, gold and silver that our society needs at a price it is willing to pay.” Bruce’s career in the mining and processing industries has taken him all over the world – South Africa and America while working with copper, and the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand with aluminium and steel. Reflecting this, he and Rosemary’s five children are scattered around the globe. Bruce’s interests include exploring untamed nature such as the environment around Roxby Downs – further afield, he has also climbed Mount Everest twice. WMC welcomes Bruce to the team.

Record 2004 profit…WMC recently announced a profit of $1.3bn after tax for 2004, a record for the company and a five-fold increase on 2003 results.

CEO Andrew Michelmore announced an increase of earnings from operations of $953m which included an increase in Olympic Dam earnings of $304m.

1000th silver pour…While ODO is well known for its copper and uranium products, the fact that we produce silver and gold is often lesser-known.

Precious metals make up five per cent of ODO’s final production – not bad for something that is almost a bySILVER POUR... product of WMC’s 1000th silver pour.

ODO’s primary process! ODO has produced silver almost since production officially started in 1988, with the first silver bar poured in 1989 weighing 1765 ounces. Fifteen years later on Christmas Eve, 2004, silver bars were poured at ODO for the 1000th time, bringing the overall amount of silver poured at ODO to an impressive 225 tonnes.

Marree fundraiser PRESENTATION… Woomera resident Roger Henwood received a certificate of appreciation, last month, from Department of Defence representative Ken Moore in recognition of more than 40 years of service to the department.

POLICE OFFICER…Cst Mel Haynes joins the Roxby Downs police force this month.

A new face on the local force ROXBY DOWNS…The Roxby Downs police force welcomes its latest addition to the team, constable Mel Haynes.

Officer Haynes comes to Roxby Downs after working in both Port Augusta and Adelaide.

“Roxby Downs is lovely and I’m really looking forward to working in the town,” she told The Monitor.

“I’ve already had a chance to get out there, and meet some people – now I’m looking forward to getting into some sports as well.”

Call for story time coordinators The Roxby Downs Community Library is currently looking for volunteers to run the toddler story time.

The duties involved include; choosing a theme for the week, choosing a book to correspond with the theme and reading to the children, organising one or two easy activities which relate to the theme such as painting, pasting or drawing, setting up and cleaning up on the day.

Woomera resident Roger Henwood was recognised for more than 40 years service with the Department of Defence this month.

Ken Moore, Head of National Operations Division within Defence Corporate Services and Infrastructure Group, presented Mr Henwood with a certificate of appreciation and a plaque on Tuesday, February 15.

Mr Henwood kicked off his career in January 1964 as an apprentice at the Apprentice Training School of the Weapons Research Establishment as an Apprentice Sheet Metal Worker.

In 1967 he took a temporary transfer to Woomera for the grand salary of $34 per week, plus allowances, but with board and lodging deducted.

According to Roger, this was the commencement of a long, fulfilling and continuing association with Woomera. He took up a permanent transfer as a sheet metal worker and transferred to Woomera by plane from Edinburgh in June of that year for a position in the mechanical workshops.

Roger married Alma Centofanti, from Two Wells, in July 1969 and they raised two children in Woomera – Susan, born in 1970, and Steven, born in 1972.

In 1990 Roger was part of the Redstone Rocket Recovery team that ventured into the Simpson Desert to recover the remnants of the rocket that launched WRESAT 1 in

November 1967, Australia’s first indigenous satellite.

The Redstone rocket is now proudly displayed in the Woomera Missile Park. Roger also continued to restore and retrieve many other rocket heritage items that are also on display in Woomera.

In 1992 the engineering support to the Joint Defence Facility Nurrungar (JDFN) and Woomera were markettested as part of the ‘Commercial Support Program’. He was directly responsible for the management of the Nurrungar Powerhouse.

In 1999 the JDFN closed and Roger transferred to his current position as Range Activities Manager in January 2000.

As well as his contribution to Defence, Roger has been an integral member of the Woomera community.

He is widely respected within the international space community for his involvement in many space and aeronautical projects at Woomera.

Roger harbours a wealth of knowledge of Woomera and its activities over the past 40 years that is probably unmatched.

He readily shares his knowledge and draws upon a seemingly unlimited number of fascinating stories.

One of these involves his discovery of a meteorite in the Simpson Desert.

However, time might be running out for local residents to tap Roger’s experiences as is planning to retire eventually to Two Wells.

It all started with a committee of school teachers who spent their free time organising helpers and donations for the day.

Downs BP and SBS. We had a lot of fun selling the sausages and drinks. We raised over $1700 on the day and it’s still rising.

We are aiming to raise $2000 in total by selling the drinks that were left over.

Adam Warren and Danny Stetco spent lessons one, two and three on Friday separating the drinks from the cartons and putting them into eskies. Mr Fuss from Beenham Elite and Mr Nicholson from Garry Baker Buildnig collected the ice and assisted loading the eskies.

Mr Kruger from Wendy’s Supa Sundaes, Mr Bennie, Miss Lowsborough, Mr Marshall helped cooking the barbecue along with Miss Edmonds.

Various teachers and students worked cooperatively to serve the sausages and drinks. Thank you to all the people that helped!

R-6 starting the year well A successful Acquaintance Night was held at the school on Monday 21st February. Approximately 100 people attended this night, which gave parents and caregivers the opportunity to find out more about the R-6 curriculum, extra curriculum offerings, student management and special programs. Parents then had an opportunity to visit their child/children’s class and have an informal chat with the teacher.

The most successful students are often those where there are strong links between home and school. Although many parents/guardians in the town have busy working lives there are many opportunities to assist your child in being successful and happy at school and these include: • Ensuring your child starts the day with a healthy breakfast and that a healthy lunch is provided • Making sure your child is punctual to school and that attendance is regular.

• Communicating any issues with the teacher promptly so that they can be addressed- it is essential that issues are followed up directly with the class teacher and if it cannot be easily resolved here other members of the Management team can provide support.

• Airing grievances in public forums does little to solve the problem and can easily become a bigger issue.

• Attending as many school events as you can and showing support for your child eg swimming carnivals, sports days, parent-teacher meetings.

• Assisting with homework tasks, listening to reading etc and providing opportunities for your child to help around the home and complete their homework grid responsibilities.

• Talking to your child about their day and any problems they may have and assist them in building resilience.

• Assisting your child to feel like they belong – wearing uniform, having a daily fruit snack, wearing their hat and having a drink bottle.

Education and student welfare is a shared community responsibility and we look forward to your support in 2005. We are all looking forward to a great year in the R-6 Cohort.

Parents and friends report Dear parents and friends, welcome to our fortnightly Newsletter.

Firstly could I please correct a mistake in the last P&F report. It was stated that we raised $700 for the year 2004 – it was $7000.

Again, we would like to thank everyone involved in fundraising last year for our school.

Our first Market Day held Saturday, February 19, was a great success. Our next P&F Market Day will be held on March 12 – same day as the Outback Fringe Festival.

During the year, P&F will be holding coffee mornings with mystery guest speakers.

Our first coffee morning will be held this month – more details later. Everyone is welcome, so come along and have a free cuppa and biscuits and meet other parents.

Our AGM was held last night, March 2, and the elected Committee Members will be announced in our next report. Our next P&F meeting will be held on April 6, at 7.30pm in the staffroom – everyone is welcome.

We currently have about 10 committee members and volunteers are always very welcome. Even if you can only contribute a small amount of your time it is always appreciated.

We recognise that people lead busy lives but every bit helps. If interested please phone the school and your phone number will be passed on to our president.

A message from the Principal

MATHS MATTERS…Year 3 teacher Steve Gera helps Jarrod Katzorke, 9, and Tyson Hill, 8, with a sticky maths problem.

Bully busting at RDAS Roxby Downs Area School takes bullying very seriously and has a clear policy for dealing with such behaviour.

It must be stated that it is our perception from community and student feedback that Roxby Downs Area School is a safe learning and work environment for students and staff.

However, no matter how good our policies and procedures, classroom and yard behaviour strategies and curriculum, the reality is that bullying and harassment will occur in all schools and therefore it is important to mobilise all members of the school and community in dealing with the issue.

Australian research suggests that up to 50% of all young people subjected to bullying do not report the incidents either for fear of reprisals or because the victims feel they are somehow to blame.

The school acknowledges this and we seek to enlist the cooperation of parents in being vigilant for certain signs, in young people who are being bullied.

Signs can include: • Being frightened of walking to or from school or changing their usual route.

• Begging you to drive them to school.

• Being unwilling to go to school or skipping school.

• Feeling ill in the mornings.

• Beginning to do poorly in schoolwork.

• Coming home with books or clothes damaged.

• Coming home hungry because their lunch or money has been taken.

Losing possessions or money.

• Becoming withdrawn, lacking in confidence. Becoming distressed and anxious.

• Eating habits have changed.

• Crying themselves to sleep, having nightmares, bedwetting.

• Having unexplained bruises, scratches or cuts.

• Beginning to bully other children.

• Becoming unreasonable and aggressive.

• Attempting or threatening suicide.

Bullying is not just physical violence (hitting, punching, kicking etc).

It is any behaviour intended to harm

or intimidate another child.

This includes name-calling, facial or body gestures to make them feel uncomfortable, excluding or isolating someone on purpose, verbal taunts, written comments about a student, spreading rumours, email or unpleasant text messages, teasing, damaging property, demands for money or possessions, put downs and various other forms.

A common misconception is that bystanders remain neutral but unfortunately, students who observe bullying are much more likely to encourage or assist the bully than to attempt to help the victim.

About 85 per cent of bullying incidents occur in the presence of other students who influence what goes on.

Besides victims others typically include ringleaders (who take the initiative), followers (who join in), reinforcers (who encourage the bully or laugh at the victim), defenders (who help the victim) and passive observers (who merely look on).

We need to hold bystanders accountable for their behaviour in bullying situations. Serious consequences will apply when bystanders support the bully within the context of an incident at school.

If you observe any signs that your child has been bullied, please contact any member of the leadership team, counsellors or the class teacher or encourage your child to do so.

The school understands its duty of care to its students and recognises that they have the right to learn in a safe environment. However, the school can only act if it has been notified and we are committed to minimising this behaviour in our school and community.

A considerable amount will be done in our school programs to combat bullying but we cannot achieve our goals without your support. Because of the nature of our small community, many outside issues are brought into school following weekend events, sporting competitions and from home.

We all have a responsibility to intervene in any potential bullying actions among young people to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Bush Fire and Tsunami Appeal… Congratulations to all involved in our fundraising effort last Friday 18th February. So far we have raised in excess of $2000. Many, many thanks to all of our generous sponsors who donated drinks and food for us to sell on the day. Please see the list of sponsors elsewhere on these pages.

Thank you to all involved particularly Mr Ben Summerton, Miss Natalie Jones, Mrs Helen Bennie, Miss Kathryn Bence, Miss Nardene Edmonds, Miss Kate Underwood, Mr Zane Petty, Mr Chris Jones, Mrs Sally Cormack, Mrs Sharon Fuss, Miss Grace Hollitt, Mrs Karen Grantham and Ms Megan Lownsborough who were the main organisers of the day. Congratulations and well done to all involved. Half of the funds raised will be used to assist in rebuilding schools and classrooms for students in the tsunami affected countries via the School Aid programme of schools across the nation. The bush fire money will be forwarded to the Salvation Army to distribute as needed in the area affected on the Eyre Peninsula.

New Governing Council… Congratulations and welcome to our newly elected Governing Council. We congratulate particularly Mr Steve Ingham as being selected Chairperson, Mrs Kim Noble as Deputy Chairperson and Mrs Rachel Young as Secretary. We are yet to appoint a Treasurer and have the option to co-opt someone from the community onto the committee if need be.

Welcome to new members - Mr David Hartman and Mrs Phillipa Weltner who join our committee for the first time. Welcome back to Mrs Lesley Teare, Mr Laurence Duggan and Mrs Sheila Culf who are continuing their second year of tenure. Mr Shane Hodgson and Mr Ben Summerton are the elected staff representatives. A representative from the local Council and the Parents and Friends association will be determined by next meeting.

We sincerely thank Mr Peter Wooldridge and Mr Peter Lindner for all their support and valued contributions to the Governing Council over the past few years.

Governing Cabinet Meeting in Roxby Downs – The Premier, Mr Mike Rann, and his Government Ministers will be having a Cabinet Meeting here in Roxby Downs on Monday, March 14th.

Both Premier Rann and Education Minister Ms Jane Lomax-Smith will be spending a brief time visiting our school.

They will address a brief school assembly as well as inspecting some of our special programmes. There will also be an opportunity for a Public Forum at the Council Chambers sometime in the afternoon.

Bus Drivers – We are currently desperate for volunteer bus drivers for camps and excursions. However we do have to abide by stricter regulations as follows: All Bus Drivers must have: The appropriate Bus licence – a minimum of either LR (Coaster, Hiace) or MR (Hino – Yellow school bus) Either appropriate accreditation or have had a recent medical check up on the approved form (collect from office) Have filled out an ED222 Application for Approval to Drive a School Bus signed by the Principal and Governing Council Chairperson.

Any surplus costs, after Medicare, associated with the medical check up for volunteer drivers will be covered by the school. Student safety is our most pressing priority. Please contact the school or your child’s teachers if you are able to assist.

Acquaintance Nights… Thank you to all the parents who made the effort to attend our information nights. Your involvement in school life is critical to the success of your child/ren here at this school.

As I write this article we have the Headstart Information Session tonight.

This programme is so successful we have several schools wishing to incorporate this into their own programme. We are most fortunate to have excellent teachers in our school particularly Miss Kate Underwood in Headstart, Mrs Pam Pedler and Mrs Bev Zeptner in our Reception classes. Our students get a wonderful beginning to their schooling life.

Vandalism…Generally we are most fortunate not to suffer too much vandalism here at our school although we do have spates of it occurring from time to time.

We are also very fortunate to have a number of vigilant community members who watch out for the school.

One such community member rang me at 8.00am on Saturday morning to report that the fire hydrants had been turned on near the playground flooding the surrounding area and part of a Year 1 classroom. One would suspect that the perpetrator/s would have been rather wet and muddy as a result. Wouldn’t it be great if they were reported to the police?

Thank you to all of those persons who actively value our school and community facilities by being vigilant.

A solid start in the trades at TAFE ROXBY DOWNS… In 2004, eight TAFE SA students from the Multi Trades pre-vocational course at the Roxby Downs campus of TAFE were successful in gaining local industry apprenticeships through Career Employment Group.

The close liaison between TAFE SA, Career Employment Group and local industry has provided an opportunity for local youth to commence their careers in Roxby Downs while still enjoying the support of family.

Local industries have been very supportive of the Multi Trades course, providing work experience placements in a range

of different trade areas for the students, Mr Harvey said.

“A meeting of industry representatives last year confirmed that the trade areas offered at TAFE were what were needed in the local area,” he said.

“It is imperative for us to offer training that meets our local needsthere are jobs for our graduates to go into.

“This has been proved by the employment outcomes experienced by 2004’s Multi Trade students.”

New graduates at ODO OLYMPIC DAM… WMC’s Olympic Dam Operations (ODO) recently welcomed its latest influx of new graduate employees for 2005.

The 14 new starters come from around Australia and have joined ODO in a range of disciplines including mining engineering, metallurgy, geology, enviromental engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering, safety and occupational therapy.

A number of the team had previously completed vacation work at ODO in their university holidays.

WMC’s graduate program provides university graduates in the mining, metallurgical fields and allied services a great opportunity to start their career.

The three-year program offers the chance to rotate around various areas of site within their chosen discipline, gaining valuable experience across the different sections of Olympic Dam, while also providing many opportunities for further training and development.

While each of the new graduates recently completed their university studies, they all have varying life and career experience.

They all agree participating in ODO’s graduate program is a good way to kickstart their working career.

WMC Training Advisor Heather Wadrop, who coordinated the 2005 ODO Graduate Program, said the students had all settled into life in Roxby Downs and are looking forward to getting involved in the community.

After joining WMC on Monday, February 7, the new graduates spent a busy week-and-a-half

meeting their on-site mentors and managers, undertaking various safety and area-specific inductions, company policy introductions, team building workshops and more.

After a week of inductions, the group visited Nurrungar for a tour led

by Woomera Area Administrator Garry Clarke.

The group had a chance to look inside the “golf ball” and hear Mr Clarke talk of the facility’s previous life as a major defense post.

The business, begun by business partners Megan and Michael Dale in November, 2001, was started with the barest essentials. Today, however, it offers a complete variety of stateof-the-art services - from digital to print, from cameras to CD-roms, utilising a fully-equipped digital minilab with the latest Fujifilm Frontier 340 printer.

To celebrate the business’s latest milestone, Far North Photographics is offering local photographers 30c prints, from digital, from March 4 to March 11.

The business known, today, as Far North Photographics was originally started in 1994 by Nicola Jowett, then passed from Nicola to Rabbit Photos before being bought by Megan and Michael Dale. The pair then took a gamble in 2004 and sold

their home to fund the purchase of new equipment.

“With the way digital photography has taken off in Roxby Downs we really saw the need to upgrade or risk going out of business.

So far the risk has been worth it.” Far North Photographics is now able to complete most orders within its own lab.

“We can print from almost anything - we are as equipped as most of the major labs in Adelaide but we are right here in Roxby Downs,” Megan said.

“It’s very important to us at Far North Photographics to give back to the community,” Michael told The Monitor.

“We’ve put everything we’ve made back into the business and back into the community.

“The support we’ve had from the people of Roxby has been amazing over the past few years, and we’d invite the community to celebrate our 1000th day of trading with us.”

‘Life in SA Today’ Australia through Anneke’s eyes ‘Life Today in SA’ – an exhibition of photographs by international photographer Anneke Botes - features a unique look at South Australian people and events while managing to tastefully and candidly capture the emotions and feelings of its subjects.

Anneke Botes, who now resides in Roxby Downs, gives us a fresh look at South Australian life through the eyes of a foreigner experiencing some of our ‘quirkiness’ for the first time.

Local residents may be delightfully surprised to see some of their own children featured in the exhibition.

Anneke says that everywhere she travels, she “tries to capture the culture, emotions, enjoyment and spirit of her subjects”.

Australia is very different from anything she’s experienced before, especially their way of enjoying life in a much more laid-back way.

Australians strike Anneke as “a strong nation with lots of culture and things happening in their lives”.

Anneke Botes studied for three years to obtain her diploma in photography.

Since then she’s been working as a photographer, full time and free lancing for almost 10 years.

She specialises in people studies, portraiture, fashion and beauty.

MAKING A MARK...Aerosol artist James Cochran will again join the Outback Fringe Festival program in 2005 to create a series of murals in Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera alongside community members.

Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera residents will make their marks on the outback this year as part of the 2005 Outback Fringe Festival.

The ‘Mark Making in the Outback’ project will invite local community members and youth to join artists James Cochrane and Dan Bradley in creating a permanent monument to celebrate local issues and the festival theme – Families, Mining and the Outback.

This year’s project follows on from the 2004 mural project in Richardson Place, Roxby Downs, which saw local youth involved in the design and execution of their own mural depicting image of their own community and lives.

Aerosol art carries with it both positive and negative connotations. Some see it as art, others see it as vandalism, and many consider it a form of mark making. Whatever the case it cannot be denied that, inherent to its formation, aerosol art has a heavy cultural basis.

Street culture is the primarily suggested basis of this and indeed, aerosol art has developed its own urban cultural identity.

Its history, however, is much more related to rural beginnings.

From Aboriginal cave paintings, to marking land, cattle and mining sites - the notion of mark making has existed in the outback for centuries.

It is with this mindset that Roxby Down’s own ‘Mark Making in the

Outback’ project gathers its momentum.

The notion of making a mark, not as a form of ownership, but rather as a celebration of place and identity, a symbol of communities evolving, questioning and possibly addressing issues.

Community members will be able to shape this project and create an artifact, relevant to their surrounds.

There will be workshops on technique and, of course, content, given by principal artist, James Cochran, with assistance from artist Dan Bradley.

Creation of murals on specific, considered sites will then begin.

This project is integral to the festival’s theme being realised in the three key communities.

Each town will be left with a permanent cultural artefact, reflective of the community and the festival theme.

This will act as an instigator of thought and healthy criticism for the community and visitors to the region.

Community participation will promote community awareness and a celebration of place and local identity.

Works in Progress...There will be road closures in the southern section of the town to connect up services to new allotments. The length of time each closure will take depends on the type of, and how many services are to be put into place. A letterbox drop will be made prior to inform residents effected by this work. There may be interruptions to water/electricity and Telstra services.

WASPS...There are a variety of native wasps in the Roxby Downs region including, left, the native Scoliid Wasp - a burrowing wasp that preys on beetle larvae. This variety of wasp is much larger than the everyday European Wasp, right, although only slightly larger than a queen of the European Wasp species.

Wasp warning Local issues The discovery and subsequent irradication of a nest of European Wasps in Andamooka has prompted Roxby Downs Council and WMC Resources to be vigilant in their efforts to identify whether the insects are also apparent in Roxby Downs.

However, the discovery has caused some confusion for local residents who have discovered various species of wasps in their own backyards.

Council is happy to identify any wasp that residents might believe is a European Wasp but reminds the community that there are many species of native wasps in the region.

The European Wasp, which is around the same size as a honey bee, can be identified by its bright yellow colour and triangular back markings.

Back on the track at Red Dunes Raceway DIRT CIRCUIT...Local dirt circuit racers held their first race meeting for the year on Saturday, February 26, 2005.

There was a field of 18 cars including three new cars, some that had seen a face lift, and some older cars.

Tony Webber had a very enjoyable and successful night, to show the crowd just how the new standard-class commodore handled.

He was also presented with ‘Best Presented Car’ for the night.

The large crowd saw good, fast racing.

Thanks go to the three out-of-town drivers who made the trip to Roxby for the first meeting.

One of whom is the current State Champion, which made it very interesting racing and challenging for all the other drivers.

Thank you to the community for the large crowd.

It was great to see your support. Our club and drivers appreciate it.

Call for five-a-side soccer nominations INDOOR SOCCER…Overwhelming support for Tuesday night social soccer has prompted the call for team nominations to join a five-a-side indoor soccer competition at Roxby Downs.

The Tuesday night competition - from 6pm till 8pm in the Roxby Downs Leisure Centre stadiums - has been attracting dozens of men, women and youths aged 12 and up.

Organisers are now keen to start an organised five-a-side competition.

NIGHT BOWLS…The night, February 25, 2005, was well supported with 14 teams trying to win the glasses for the night.

Several games were close with the Funky Frogs having a draw with Carefactor. For the first time in the ten years that I have been playing night owls in Roxby Downs three teams finished on an equal number of points to win the glasses.

Three teams finished with 80 points so the players from the three teams each got a glass.

Well done to all the teams.

Several players scored prizes for ‘touchers’ and two players also won a prize ‘resting touchers’.

Wednesday nights is still on so if anyone is interested in playing social bowls during the middle of the week come and join us, the more the merrier, names in by 7.30pm.

Olympic Dam comes out on top Olympic Dam came out on top in an absorbing duel with Rogues that lasted until the last over of the day at Roxby Downs oval on Saturday morning with a five wicket haul by part time ‘leggie’ Greg Fiebig a feature of the score line.

The Devils just, but only just overhauled the 159 runs set by their opponents with the Rogues paying the price of not batting out their allotted forty over and then sending down twenty wides at the bowling crease.

However there was much to like about the rest of their effort against the minor premiers and with some key players available next week they should make a bold showing in the finals.

Barry Dadleh won the toss and elected to bat in perfect conditions and after a shaky start they consolidated their efforts only to waste it later on.

Openers John Adams and Peter Wooldridge both fell to edges snapped up by Craig Nichols off Jonothan Kroll and Chris Kenny to make the score 2/6, but contributions by Nigel Altmann, Dadleh and Nathan Promnitz lifted the score to 143 with ten overs to go.

SOFTBALL…Roxby Downs Softball will celebrate its 15th year next month.

But the celebrations will be dependent on a new influx of supporters as, after 15 years behind the bases, the standing committee are ready to hand over their guiding gloves to a new team of coordinators.

The group’s driving team, over the past decade and a half, are now calling for a new commitment from local players.

“It’s time for some new blood to take on the organisation of the league,” softballer Chris Charman told The Monitor last week.

“Some of us have been around since the first competition in 1990.

“We helped get the competition back on track in 2001 when we had six teams and then we started up teeball for the juniors.

“We’d like to see that success continue in 2005 but we don’t have the support to run a competition at all, just yet.

“Our junior teeball competition had more than 100 kids in the first year – but that competition is completely dependent on parent involvement.”

Roxby Downs Softball will hold a meet-

ing on Monday, April 4, at the Roxby Downs SES Shed on Olympic Way, at 7.30pm.

Softballers, teeballers and their families are invited to come along, register their interest, and put their hands up to help during the season.

“The competition has been mixed for the past six years, before then, it was women only,” softballer Leanne Stuckey said.

“We’d like to see six teams in the competition in 2005 – we don’t want to see it collapse down to nothing again, not after 15 years.

“There’s nine to a team and we need at least four teams for a competition, as well as umpires and scorers.

“We’d like to see the competition build up to eight teams though.

“We need a lot more support to manage that though.”

A sign-up day and social fun game will be held at the Roxby Downs softball oval on Saturday, April 30, from 1pm.

“This is a fun, social, family competition,” softballer Lol Wilton said.

“You don’t need to be fit or know anything about how to play softball to come along and have some fun.”
