Fourth blaze devastates Andamooka community By Stuart Deed A lone toilet block remains the last unburnt building of the Andamooka Primary School following the fourth devastating blaze in three months. The fire was discovered just after 9:30am on Sunday, March 26, and despite a CFS response time of under two minutes, little could be done to stop the fire seriously damaging the school’s last classroom, which once housed the library. Police Fire Cause Investigators and Port Augusta Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) were examining the scene on Sunday afternoon and were treating the fire as ‘suspicious’. Damage from the latest fire is estimated at $200,000. Andamooka CFS Captain, Nigel Campbell, was one of the first people on the scene. “I think that like the rest of the town I’m gutted after this fire, especially after all the hard work from our community,” said Mr Campbell. After surveying the latest fire damage, school principal Angela Turner said she felt “shellshocked”. “I went and had a look and everything is just all black, black, black…,” Principal Turner said. She also questioned how so many fires could strike the school. “I mean, what’s going on here? That’s the question everyone is asking. “Emotionally these fires have affected lots of people here already and unfortunately that is going to continue and we can’t ignore that,” said Principal Turner. Psychologists and representatives of the Department of Education and Children’s Services (DECS) were expected to visit the school on Monday, March 27. Meanwhile, the school community has been forced to regroup and try to put their school back together again. “At least it’s only buildings which have been damaged and the kids aren’t under threat,” said Ms Turner. Local mother and CFS 1 st Lieutenant and Administration Officer, Anne Legg, said despite the latest set-back she would not be sending her daughter to study in Roxby Downs.

“It’s very concerning – what are these fires doing to our kids? I know that after the last fire my son was very distraught. But knowing the principal and teachers, we’ll just move on again,” said Ms Legg. “Hopefully we can just soldier on and pick up from where we left off last time,” she added. Principal Turner said she was unsure what the future held for the decimated school but would advise the community on what she thought was the best way forward. “I’m determined to do my best for the kids and their families and I will tell them what I think is the best way to handle the situation,” she said. The Andamooka community is currently running an Andamooka Fire Fund and would greatly appreciate any donations – which can be sent to PO Box 9, Andamooka Post Office, 5722. A community meeting was held on Monday March 27 to determine how to resolve the latest schooling crisis but early indications from several parents, including Ms Legg, were that schooling would continue to take place in Andamooka, even if it meant home-schooling. The Minister for Education, Dr Jane Lomax-Smith, said new buildings would take six months to arrive and DECS was “very keen” to determine why and how there had been so many fires.
