ver 40 participants and hundreds of Roxby residents gathered for a whole Sunday of entertainment at the Sodexo 2010 Roxby Billy Cart Bash.

The organisers of the event couldn’t be happier with the results, as hundreds of people supported the day.

According to Karl Scothern, one of the organisers, it went all really well, in place and according to plan.

“We have so many people to thank for the event’s success and I wish we could do it personally but I am sure everyone involved knows how much we appreciate all the volunteers for donating their time and really embracing the event.

munity for showing up and enjoying themselves and our sponsors for making it all possible,” Mr Scothern told The Monitor.

Events manager Jack McGuire was also very happy with the results of the big day.

“We want to thank our platinum sponsor Sodexo Remote Sites and all the other sponsors for their contribution and community spirit.

Mr McGuire believes what made the event so unique was that “it was not only about raising funds for a non-profit organisation, but it was a great opportunity for families to get together building the billy carts and participating on the day .”

Sponsors like Sodexo that put their own names on the event are also very pleased with the outcome of the day.

“We are extremely happy with the turn out of the local support to this event and it has been a real pleasure for Sodexo, as one of the sponsors, to be involved. We certainly want to be involved again next year,” said Sodexo’s Senior Project Manager for Olympic Dam, Tony Treloar.

Tony is right, the community embraced the event and not only showed up but got involved, had fun, cheered for their favourites, took photos and just had a lovely day together.

The Sodexo 2010 Billy Cart Bash was a community event that also allowed other non-profit organisations to raise their profiles in the community and their contribution to the event was huge, with community stalls from local groups and clubs, such as Child Care, Roxby Road Safe, Girls Guide, CFS, Roxby Moto-X, amongst many others.

The Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club, told The Monitor that their involvement in the Billy Cart Bash was very positive.

“We want to get more members involved in our club and this event gave us the opportunity to approach people, provide information and let

the community know what we are about,” said Paul Francis, one the of club’s members.

Roxby Downs’ scouts had a very busy day, with the Flintstones Billy Cart, which ended up winning Best Silly Cart and Best Dressed Team in the competition.

“We want to thank John Pianta for building this amazing cart for us and Diane Gardner for making our costumes,” said Fred Flintstone (also known as Scotty Martin).

Scotty and his mate Glen Hunt (or should I say Barney) said the day was magnificent and they couldn’t be happier to participate.

“We had the scouts involved in this event for weeks, building billy carts, and it has been really fun for all of them.

“We have proven to everyone that you can have great fun even in a small country town like ours,” said Glen.

It was definitely a great day out and the general comments from those who attended on the day was that they can’t wait for the next year’s event.

Ladies loved the pre-loved fashion night Policing of Lions Park increased following damage

Roxby Downs’s ladies have proven they know it all when it comes to fashion, as nearly 100 of them gathered together for the Pre-Loved Fashion Market event, last Saturday night in the Auditorium.

The Pre-Loved Fashion market was a women’s only night for the sale of pre-loved clothes and accessories.

It was night of great food, beautiful clothes and accessories on display for small prices, a buyer’s paradise.

It was all for a good cause as the proceeds from the event will go to the Roxby Downs Health Services Auxiliary for services supporting women in our region.

“We are really happy with the night. It was a success and we are looking forward to doing it again sometime,” said Bernie Kinnaird, who co-ordinates the Roxby Leisure Centre program ‘Focus on Local Women’, in which the event was part.

The event was only possible because of the support of volunteers who checked, sorted, tagged and displayed the clothes, as well as worked on the day selling them, and also the participation of local women who sold their clothes and the ones who bought them.

Roxby Leisure staff also needs to be acknowledged as they provided everyone with great food and a lovely atmosphere.

he Roxby Downs Blue Light Disco was a successful night enjoyed by approximately 65 youths, aged between 12 and 17 years.

The night was incident free thanks to volunteers from SAAS, student representatives from My Space, Committee members and Police.

A special thanks to Sports Power for their continued support in providing prizes, BHP Billiton and the Roxby Downs Leisure Centre. Thanks to DJ Jazzy Jack McGuire for providing the music.

Police are paying attention to youths riding pushbikes and scooters through the mall area of the Roxby Shopping Centre. Any offences of youths riding with out helmets are being dealt with positively by Police and they are working with the Roxby Downs Area School to educate youth in safe riding practices.

Concerns are held for the safety of members of the public, including small children, utilising the facilities at Lions Park. Over the last few weekends there have been large parties continuing to early hours of the morning. Property damage has occurred to the park and glass and rubbish is being left through out the park.

SAPOL are working together with the Roxby Council and the Leisure Centre to respond to these issues and ensure the park continues to be a safe place for members of the public to utilise and enjoy.

Overnight on Friday, March 26 2010, a small amount of damage was done to the Roxby Downs Area School, including damage to a door and window. Police are investigating this offence. Any person with information in relation to this incident are asked to contact Roxby Police on 8671 0370.

Roxby Downs, Woomera and Andamooka Police are concentrating on road worthiness of vehicles and as such a number of defects and defect cautions have been issued for failing to maintain vehicle standards.

On March 26, a male was reported for throwing a bottle at other people at the Lions Park in Roxby Downs. The male will face these charges in court at a later date.

Traffic offences are also a continuing issue in Roxby Downs.

On March 27, a female was issued an expiation notice for allegedly driving in Roxby Downs with a blood alcohol level of 0.078.

Police have issued, over the past week, three vehicle defects, eight caution expiations re exceed speed, seven expiations re exceed speed, and three expiations for other traffic matters.

The Transport Department says the creek has cut the Strzelecki Track, which is the main road to Moomba.

Department official Peter Short says energy producer Santos is putting in alternative private roads to get access to its facilities in the area.

Mr Short says the creek is up to 200 metres wide at the crossing and a third flood front on its way from Queensland will delay road repairs for at least two months.

“This looks like it’s the biggest one of the three so far and it’s about 250 kilometres long so, you know, it is going to be some time before we can get into these locations and actually start making repairs,” he said.

Roxby among the richest in state It’s official Roxby Downs has emerged as South Australia’s sixth richest area, thanks to the mining boom.

Workers in boom mining town Roxby Downs brought home $74,383 in 2007-08 - a lucrative 10 per cent jump on the previous year.

It’s tale of rich and poor, the small farming hamlet of Kingston on Murray now ranks as SA’s second poorest, with average income slumping 20 per cent to just $35,011.

North Adelaide has cemented its place as the state’s richest suburb with its taxpayers earning $84,790 on average, according to a Tax Office profile released yesterday.

Not far behind are the inner-south suburbs of Hyde Park, Malvern and Unley, where the average pay packet was $81,891 in 2007-08.

A close third were the inner-north suburbs of Collinswood and Gilberton, where the average taxable income was $80,456.

Beaumont, Burnside and Erindale were next at $78,354, with Glen Osmond, Glenunga and Mount Osmond at $75,643.

The Tax Office profile shows most of the state’s poorest areas are in the bush.

Kainton, Paskeville and Sunnyvale on the Yorke Peninsula have the dubious honour of being SA’s poorest hamlets. Workers earned just $34,587 on average in 200708 - down 8 per cent on a year earlier.

Darke Peak on the Eyre Peninsula fared marginally better, with average income of $35,227.

Sydney cemented its status as Australia’s best-heeled area, boasting seven of the 10 richest suburbs. In Point Piper and Darling Point, the average income was a $186,202. Toorak in Melbourne was No. 2 at $165,714.

Probably the best part of the excursion was the cookie dough. George had made for us.

We each got some dough to make our own cookies, we put chocolate chips and white chocolate chips on them too.

Roxby Bakery. My favourite thing was eating all of the white and dark chocolate in the bakery and I loved it. Me and my dad made cookies together , I will probably never get to do it again because you cant just walk around out the back any old time. By Joel Yesterday my class went to the bakery.

George and Ram were the bakers. They showed us the bread maker and also showed us how to out it in a machine to make it a long flat piece of dough. George let us pass around a piece of dough. He showed us the huge oven that they use to cook the bread and rolls. George showed us how to make cool looking rolls that look like flowers and knots. I had a great time!

Floods at Lake Eyre

Heavy rains that fell across northern NSW and Queensland since the Christmas and the New Year period is currently flowing down a number of creeks and rivers and spilling into Lake Eyre.

Lake Eyre is receiving steady flows of flood waters with follow-up rains between March and April expected to attract the migration of much more bird life to the area.

Seagulls have made their way inland and pelicans are already flocking in, anticipating their own native fishing season.

This still does not explain the ever present, obviously geographically confused seagulls in Roxby Downs…

Excitement is beginning to grab the attention of holiday makers as summer cools off in the southern states of Australia.

Lake Eyre is a giant basin where the great inland rivers of the outback converge. The lake can lay dry for many years on end, with picturesque white salt formations around the banks and a white blanket of salt as far as the eye can see with lizards and other hardy creatures still able to survive. It is a similar view to that of Lake Torrens, or Island Lagoon, which we pass whilst driving to Adelaide, quite an optical illusion for those who are yet to experience it.

Lake Eyre was also the location chosen for Donald Campbell’s Bluebird CN7 speed trials where he achieved 429 mph (690 km/h) on his final Lake Eyre run. The site was chosen as it offered 450 square miles (1,170 km2) of dried salt lake, where rain had not fallen in the previous 20 years and the surface of the 20-mile (32 km) track was as hard as concrete.

This year with the tempestuous inland rivers flooding in from across the borders after Queensland received a tropical drenching recently, Lake Eyre is beginning to come alive as a gigantic wetland, bubbling with the previously dormant aquatic life, attracting water birds for thousands of kilometers, bringing a new ecosystem, a cycle of life once again into the desert.

Last year in 2009 after tropical rains ravaged the eastern states, Lake

Eyre drew record crowds for the once in a lifetime spectacle as the flood waters began spilling in.

Visitors received an outback feast with many arriving at Easter in time for Coober Pedy’s annual Opal Festival.

This year, 2010 Coober Pedy celebrates its 95th year as an opal mining town, being the last frontier in Australia where pioneers built an underground town below the sedimentary level of the Great Inland Sea after opal was discovered to exist at the Stuart Range in 1915.

Fortunately March/ April marks the period where the soaring heat of the summer subsides into balmy warmth which lasts for several more months.

Coober Pedy’s outback mailman Peter Rowe who owns and operates Desert Diversity Tours, leaves the Opal mining town twice each week heading down to drop off mail and supplies to outback stations and small towns such as Oodnadatta.

Peter, with his large troupe carrier, which is forever full, conveying adventurous sightseers, is often the only communication the station folk have during their hectic and romanticized lives mustering and taking care of their large stations.

Peter is a pioneer of the outback and says that Lake Eyre is 15 metres below sea level.

Peter meets up with Trevor Wright, an experienced charter pilot who lives at William Creek where visitors are able to enjoy a picturesque and photographic expedition over Lake Eyre.

Most importantly the area around Lake Eyre is the native homeland of the Arabunna people.

Bundoo Bunta is the name given to the Lake by the Arabunna who are the traditional custodians and keepers of the Lake.

Lake Eyre has only completely filled three times in recorded white history – the last time occurred in 1974-75. The Arabunna people will have many stories passed down through their ancestors of earlier occurrences.

Animal cruelty in Roxby Downs

A

nimal cruelty is more prominent than many people may think. A factor that may not be commonly associated with animal cruelty is domestic violence, child abuse, serial killings and school shootouts. The fact is these monstrosities are psychologically linked to animal cruelty within the abusers mind.

The line between interpersonal abuse and animal abuse is much finer than people would like to acknowledge.

Eventually the perpetrators are seeking the same fulfilment of exerting their obvious strength and power over a less dominant victim.

But animal cruelty would never happen in Roxby Downs… or would it? A concerned resident of Roxby Downs had a pet subjected to an incredibly cruel act recently in which the animal was torched and had it’s claws forcibly removed. The pet owner, who asked not to be named, expressed disgust and puts out a call to arms…

“There are two claws that will never grow back, and all other claws are chipped and need regular attention. The vet said they could have been hacked at by wire cutters or a similar household appliance. He has severe bruising around his torso and possibly a cracked rib” said the pet lover.

“All up the vet bill was over $300… I have heard of other cats around town that have been attacked. The perpetrator traps them, torches them and skins them alive, and finally lets them die. Just because they don’t like cats.”

Anyone who has any information about such cruelty should make haste with letting the authorities know.

So what does a horrific event such as this say about our town? According to research it objectifies our parents as neglectful and abusing, and consequentially the children follow suit as abusers. One incident can typecast the whole town’s reputation.

At the present moment, we are viewed as a bubbling mining town… but what could our town turn into should incidents such as these continue to be ignored?

In the last decade, researchers, the FBI and other agencies within the USA, have linked animal cruelty to domestic violence, child abuse, serial killings and killings by school-age children.

A home grown assailant that had an extensive history of torturing animals before their debut on the murder screen was Martin Bryant, who murdered 35 and injured 21 in the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. This is obviously an extreme case, but no doubt highlights the severity of an animal abusing incidents.

Perpetrators of animal abuse are predominantly adolescent males, from all ethnic and socio – economic backgrounds and often reflect the violence that they witness or experience at home.

The “cruel gene” is a direct result as a consequence of poor environmental and society conditions.

Compelling studies show how children who abused animals were the victims of abuse themselves, it just seems to flow in a domino effect.

Australia tells Beijing to stay out of iron-ore talks China’s steelmakers should not try draw their government into iron ore price talks with Australian miners, Australia’s trade minister said, as the mills struggle to pin back soaring raw material prices.

Any overt efforts by Beijing to influence iron ore prices would likely deal the coup de grace to the decades old annual benchmark pricing mechanism, already teetering on the brink of collapse due to increasingly volatile market conditions and the growth in the spot market.

The China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) and the heads of more than 10 mills wrote a joint letter to Premier Wen Jiabao on March 11, the official China Securities Journal has reported, asking him to take up the issue of rising iron ore import prices at a national level.

With BHP Billiton highlighting the 100 percent gulf between spot and contract prices and Brazil’s Vale demanding a 90 percent hike in contract prices, China’s steel industry is worried about exploding costs that they say cannot be passed onto users.

“We recognise China’s market economy status, all we ask in return is that it acts in accordance with market principles,” Trade Minister Simon Crean told reporters.

Chamber opposes higher Western Australia mining taxes The Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME) of Western Australia has urged the state government to “put on ice” any prebudget aspirations to impose higher mineral royalties or risk jeopardising the resources sector’s resurgence after the global economic crisis.

Western Australia has an estimated A$72-billion a year production value from its resources sector, CME CEO Reg Howard-Smith said on Monday. He added that there was some A$135-billion worth of resource projects currently committed or under consideration in Western Australia.

The Western Australian resources sector pays some A$3-billion in royalties a year – a 137% increase in royalties over the past five years – and it comes from gold and all other minerals sectors in Western Australia, said Howard-Smith.

BHP agrees shorter-term coal deals with European, Asian customers Diversified miner BHP Billiton reported that it had reached sales terms for a significant portion of its hard coking coal volumes for 2010, with customers in Europe, China, India and Japan.

The world’s number-one coking coal miner said that the deals were based on a “structural change” to shorter-term market-based pricing for the contract period.

The settlements reflected the company’s commitment to achieving marketclearing prices over time, across all its bulk commodities.

Newswire Reuters quoted Japanese steelmaker JFE Holdings as saying that it had agreed a coking coal price of $200/t for April to June.

The price for the three-month contract period represented a 55% increase from the benchmark price for the 2009/10 financial year of $129/t, Reuters reported.

BHP Billiton primarily produces and markets high-quality hard coking coals for the international steel industry. In addition, it supplies a wide range of other coal qualities to satisfy specific customer requirements.

Australia’s gold output rose in 2009 Australian gold production rose by 13% in the December 2009 quarter, Melbourne-based industry consultants Surbiton Associates said in releasing its latest overview of the Australian gold sector.

Gold output rose by 7 t to 62 t, compared with the September quarter 2009, and by 14% compared with the December quarter 2008. For the full 2009 calendar year, Australia produced 227 t, or 7.3 million ounces of gold, an increase of 3% on the 2008 year.

The increase in production to 227 t cemented Australia’s position as the world’s second-largest gold producing country.

China was the largest producer in 2009 at 314 t, with preliminary figures putting the US third at about 216 t and South Africa fourth at about 210 t.

At the current Australian gold price of around A$1 250/ oz, the 227 t produced in 2009 is worth over A$9-billion, making gold a significant contributor to Australian export earnings.

The Boddington mine in Western Australia, owned by Newmont Mining Corp is still in the ramp-up phase and produced 118 000 oz or about 3,7 t of gold in the December quarter. It was redeveloped at a total cost of over A$3-billion and is expected to produce at a rate of more than 200 000 oz of gold a quarter this year.

Among the smaller producers, Ramelius Resources’ new, high-grade, underground mine at Wattle Dam, also in Western Australia, added 21 000 oz to the total.

Sandvik talks about safety with RDAS students

By Celeste Lustosa David Bastian from Sandvik has become a familiar face at Roxby Downs Area School after delivering a safety message to the school.

For the fourth time he has given an Occupational Health Safety and Environment in the Workplace presentation for the Roxby Industry Training and Education (RITE) students.

Safety Dave, as some of the students know him, is the Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator of Sandvik at Olympic Dam and has over 25 years experience in the industry’s safety.

He is also an ambulance officer and a swimming coach in Roxby and he delivers a presentation that is easy for the youngsters to understand and at the same time sends a message of what are the risks faced in the workplace.

“We have quite a few of these students coming to Sandvik for work experience, so it is really positive to give the presentations as part of their preparation for what the work is about, the challenges and safety procedures.

“It is important that they understand this is a dangerous industry and all the safety procedures are extremely important,” Mr Bastian told The Monitor.

According to Juliette Demaine, the Vocational Education and Training Project Officer at RDAS, Sandvik has been a great support for this project.

“We work closely with the industries in this project and Sandvik has been a fantastic support, helping the students understand the employer’s needs, as well as their responsibilities in the workplace,” Mrs Demaine said.

She also believes that presentations like the ones given by David offer the students a real world perspective.

“They are listening to someone who is part of the industry workforce so it seems more real to them,” she said.

local businesses, in preparation for next term when they will take part in work experience.

The school encourages the industry to get involved in this program.

“We have significant support in town from BHP and big contractors like Sandvik and without their participation the program would be less valuable,” said Mrs Demaine.

About RITE – The program focuses on general employability awareness and development and provides opportunities for students to experience high quality, well supervised work placements.

The school, the employer and the students collaborate to identify the work skills the student will focus on during the placement.

The course is one semester long but RITE students who complete all required assessment tasks receive two SACE Work Education units.

The RITE program enables year ten students to achieve two SACE units prior to their formal entry into their SACE year. As a result of this, students have been able to undertake more flexible offerings including TAFE certificate courses.

A work place investigation is also conducted to increase student understanding about workplace policies and procedures.

The students also organise forums where they invite people they have met through the work placement to talk to the RITE class. The focus of these talks is about the world of work, key aspects to being successful in the workplace and the discussion of possible career pathways.

Passionate campaigner laid to rest ...

TRIBUTE On Thursday the 18th March, Greens campaigner, Carol Walker was travelling on the highway north of Port Augusta on her way to Coober Pedy when her car hit a cow.

She was killed instantly when the car flipped over and rolled multiple times down the opposite embankment.

The funeral service was held at the Sunset Rock Chapel at Stirling just east of Adelaide on Friday. Andrew Melville-Smith travelled to Adelaide for the funeral service “The service was a celebration of Carol’s life and was attended by her family, work colleagues and members of the Greens.” he said.

“She had a very full life, being an active

member of Sustainable Communities for City of Norwood Payneham and St Peters and was a supporter of the Greens.

“We received the news of Carol’s death on the eve of Polling Day and we were all in a state of shock that weekend.”

The police were unable to initially trace her family and so they contacted Greens candidate Andrew Melville-Smith who said, “They rang me because my number was on all the campaign material that was at the accident site.”

“We had so many people out campaigning for us, you just don’t expect this sort of tragedy to strike.”

Floodwaters not yet in Lake Eyre The weather bureau last week said water trickling into Lake Eyre in South Australia’s far north is from local falls and Queensland floodwaters are not expected to reach the lake for three weeks.

The Diamantina River has started to pour water on to the salt beds of Lake Eyre but experts are unsure whether it will fill the whole lake area.

It is the second consecutive year Lake Eyre has received an inflow.

A hydrologist with the weather bureau in South Australia, Annette Barton, says more floodwaters are bound to follow.

“Coming down the Diamantina and into the Warburton we expect it could be three weeks, what’s coming across from the Cooper - possibly longer,” she said.

Install artificial turf to save water A

s previously reported by The Monitor, the Environmental Forum’s Garden Competition is giving local residents of Roxby the chance, nay, the excuse to show off their perfectly manicured, sustainable and innovative gardens.

Bernie Kinnaird’s backyard is much easier to look after and her garden is water efficient thanks to artifical turf.

Nominations will be open from August 28 until October 29, and until then The Monitor will be showcasing numerous local gardens on a monthly basis.

From nominations, judging will take place in the fortnight following the closure of nominations and the winner will be announced on November 24.

There will be numerous categories to be assessed including water efficiency, energy consumption, aesthetics, variety of plant species, functionality, productivity and garden waste management.

This month’s hot tip for sustainability within your garden is installation of artificial turf in order to save water and have a luscious, green grass all year round!

Bernie Kinnaird has made the change from real grass to artificial and explains…

Having grown up in New Zealand, Bernie has always been surrounded by greenery. From the green trees lining streets to the green grass beneath her feet. Imagine the disdain when moving to arid, desert Australia. With nothing but red dirt, Bernie felt the need to make a change in her backyard.

“I was disgusted to see how much water was being wasted around me... Australia is really behind the 8 ball with water conservation” she said. “We don’t have water restrictions here (in Roxby) and are forever tapping into the non-renewable artesian basin” Bernie said that while initially the artificial turf was expensive, the grass pays for itself in comparison to

the money saved on water. “When we first installed it I was doing grass angels in it” she explained enthusiastically.

She said that while she cannot pinpoint any cons of installing artificial turf, the pros are incredible. “It’s green all year round, there is minimal maintenance, no water needed and is child, animal and UV resistant... it does get a bit warm under the harsh Roxby sun, but as does everything.”

Bernie said that while she was aware of the environmental benefits that are associated with using artificial turf, she said the main reason she wanted it was for peace of mind. “It’s nice to have a nice house and be able to be happy and comfortable and entertain,” she said.

If living in a BHP Billiton rented house there is also obviously the possibility of reimbursement for your trouble and costs involved if you do install artificial turf. As the turf does undoubtedly increase the value of the house, and depending on which brand you buy, generally comes with a 10 year warranty.

“It has a 10 year warranty, however I know for a fact that a school in Sydney has used this exact type of turf for 15 years,” said Bernie.

Bernie’s tip for selecting and installing artificial turf for your home is to “spend a little more money and get longevity and good quality”.

Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer

s previously reported by The Monitor, the weekend of October 16 and 17, 2010 will be a very special one as the Relay for Life takes over the town for an awesome 24 hour event, starting at 2pm on the Saturday and ending at 9am on the Sunday.

Cancer Council’s Relay for Life is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with your community and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

As part of the special occasion, a first lap will honour cancer survivors and carers who will take to the track proudly wearing coloured sashes. All participants will gather around the track to applaud the courage and strength shown by those completing the lap.

Long lunch on the Roxby Green

reparations for Car 812’s Barossa-inspired Long Lunch on the ANZAC Day long weekend are well underway and it is shaping up to be an exciting event. Not only will it give locals an opportunity to experience the Barossa in their home town, the Long Lunch will provide Variety SA with a much-needed fundraising opportunity.

All cancer survivors and carers are welcome to take part in the walk whether they are part of a team or not.

Survivors are those who are now cancer-free or those who are currently undergoing treatment. Carers include those walking with the person they cared for and those walking in honour of a loved one lost.

In Roxby Downs, Vicki Hatty is the coordinator of the First Lap. “This is the lap when Cancer survivors and Carers (families) start the event. After the first lap we will have afternoon tea available for them.

“I am happy to be involved with this 2010 Relay; I hope I can encourage other survivors and carers to participate in the walk,” said Vicki.

Vicki is one of the strong survivors of breast cancer.

She was diagnosed in 2007, just a few weeks after she arrived in Roxby.

“I was still having some treatment when the 2008 Relay for Life event happened in Roxby Downs, so I was apprehensive about taking part until I turned up on the day and whilst it was very emotional I was so pleased that I had the opportunity to participate.

“I had no idea about the proceedings for the day and was overwhelmed by the activities and formalities that had been organised. The day was terrific,” she told The Monitor.

Participants in the Survivors and Carers lap will be given sashes to wear to acknowledge that they are part of that group.

“This is what the relay is about, letting people see the face of cancer sufferers and their families/carers so that everyone can see the need to find a cure.

“This walk is important as it allows everyone to reflect about those people close to them that have suffered cancer. It also gives hope that the money raised by these events goes to research that will one day make a difference for everyone,” Vicki added.

The cancer survivor added that by participating in the walk it meant that she had a chance to talk to others who knew what she had been through.

“The support I received from the other survivors helped me to see forward rather than back and meeting the previous organisers also led to me being involved with Red Sands, the local branch of Cancer Council SA,” Vicki concluded.

Residents of Roxby Downs may have seen Car 812 driving around town lately. The Roxby contingent of the four-person team, Andrew Winterfield and Kate Hobbs, have been familiarising themselves with the 1964 Dodge and the driving challenges a car of that age presents.

The other two members of the team, Lyn Hobbs and Janine Walker from the Barossa, are quite familiar with Car 812’s handling on Bash tracks with both being seasoned “Bashers”.

The Dodge will be home for the members of the team on this year’s South Australian Variety Bash. Bashers will cover many miles of road, from bitumen to rough station tracks, over eight days in August. At the recent 2010 Variety Bash launch in Adelaide, the official route was announced. Commencing in Murray Bridge on Saturday August 14, the Bash has been titled the “Mallee to the Valley” Bash. Heading out through the Riverland, overnight stops include Loveday 4x4 park, Lake Culleraine, Mildura, Bindara, White Cliffs, Broken Hill, and Hawker, with the event finishing in Clare on Saturday August 21.

The Bash combines driving challenges with fun stops, entertainment and a lot of socialising - all in the name of charity. Variety SA supports charities and individuals in South Australia, allocating grants that directly benefit disadvantaged children. Copper demand growing to solve world problems Copper demand jumped by over 50 percent in the last decade John Fennell, CEO of the Copper Development Centre. Australia told Australia’s first Copper Conference in Brisbane today.

“It might have got its start in the Bronze Age, but it’s still thriving in the 21st Century,” Mr Fennell told the audience.

According to Mr Fennell copper is finding new roles in some of the world’s most exciting markets.

These include alternative power, electric cars, energy efficiency, technology, smart, healthy buildings, nanotechnology, antimicrobial protection and aquaculture, to name only a few.

“Home connectivity is revolutionizing how we live, relax and work at home, but it can’t be done without copper,” Mr Fennell said. “Houses that can distribute fast broadband and large amounts of data are seeing the copper content go from 60 kgs to 95kgs,” Mr Fennell said.

“It’s a similar story in cars, which will see their copper content jump by 33 kgs as vehicles switch to electricity.”

“And the emerging role of Antimicrobial Copper™ to fight the spread of infection is also predicted to add a further 3 million tonnes to world demand.”

“Our next big project here in Australia is finding ways to improve residential energy management as we move toward smart grids. And copper will be a part of that solution too,” Mr Fennell added.

Macmahon awarded $190 million coal contract Macmahon Holdings Limited (ASX:MAH) announced today that it had been awarded a three year contract by Syntech Resources to develop and operate the new Cameby Downs coal mine in the Surat Basin in Queensland.

The contract, valued at over $190 million, will see Macmahon undertake all mining activities for Stage 1 of the project, including planning, mine development, waste stripping, coal mining, coal preparation and train loading.

Cameby Downs is located 17 km north east of Miles, which is approximately 360 km west of Brisbane.

Macmahon Chief Executive Officer, Nick Bowen, said that the award was an excellent addition to the Mining Business’s growing portfolio of work.

“We are pleased to be able to work with Syntech Resources to develop this important initial stage of their project which will see them established as a significant coal producer in the Surat Basin.

“This award not only builds on our expertise in coal mining, it is also the first contract where we will operate and maintain the Coal Handling and Preparation Plant.

odexo’s - Olympic Village Project star was shining bright on March 19, as they were presented with three awards from the annual Sodexo Star Awards for South Australia. On the occasion, Sodexo’s sites get recognised for their previous 12 months achievements.

Sodexo’s site in Olympic Village got the Best of the Best, Corporate and Social Responsibility and Service Excellence awards.

With the awards, the company also got a $5,000 prize that will be used to the benefit of the staff.

“I think it is a fantastic achievement to have our staff recognised and we are very happy with all their effort and support they have been giving us.

“Our staff members are extremely committed to our dynamic and our clients,” said the senior Project Manager – Olympic Village, Anthony Treloar.

The award for Corporate and Social Responsibility can be attributed to the company’s big involvement in the community.

“We try to support the community as much as we can and we are involved in various sponsorships in sports and events, but unfortunately

Rocket to be launched in Woomera Anzac Day celebrations in Woomera The Woomera RSL Bowling Club will commemorate Anzac Day with a ceremony on Sunday, April 25, 2010. All residents and visitors of Woomera are invited to attend the services.

The day will start with the traditional Gunfire Breakfast at 5.30am at the RSL, followed by Dawn Service at 6.30am at the War Memorial.

At the conclusion of Dawn Service, breakfast will be served to the residents and guests of Woomera at the RSL Club Rooms at approximately 7am.

The Commemorative Service will start at 10am, with marchers lining up at the back of Tirriki Park.

After the service a luncheon will be served at the RSL for the residents and guests of Woomera, starting at approximately 12 noon.

he Defence S cience and Technology Organization (DSTO) are scheduled to conduct the launch of a sounding rocket in the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) during the period May 21 to 28, 2010.

The predicted impact point is in a remote area of the WPA West of the Tarcoola to Alice Springs railway line.

The WPA is declared as a prohibited area for the purposes of ‘the testing of war material’. From time to time other Defence approved activities, such as sounding rocket launches, are also conducted.

The WPA is located in the North West of the State of South Australia and is approximately 127,000 square kilometres in area. Its South Eastern corner is located approximately 450 kilometres North West of Adelaide.

Members of the public traversing the WPA via the Stuart Highway and Coober Pedy to William Creek road are reminded that these roads are part of a prohibited area and that they are not to deviate from them.

Other roads and tracks entering the WPA are signposted to the effect that the WPA is a prohibited area and no person shall enter, be or remain therein without proper authorisation.

Penalty for unauthorized entry is $2200

Thrift Shop goes from strength to strength

Wow cleans up in soapy session

By Paula Mackenzie Wow! Is all I can say, after a huge turnout for our Tuesday night craft session this week, when we were lucky enough to have Morgaan Otto share her passion for soap-making with about 15 people who came to mix, stir and pour soap in the Woomera Area School kitchen.

The assembled group was very diverse, and it was great to see some new faces, including several children, amongst the regulars.

Morgaan, who was not in the least perturbed by our noisy rabble, was well-prepared for the session with plenty of instructions and materials to go around.

Using body-friendly, ‘vegan’ products made from olive oil and glycerine, we proceeded to chop our way through approximately five kilos of the basic compound, then mixed in delicious perfumes and glorious colours, pouring the mix into a variety of fun moulds similar to those used for chocolate and cakes (don’t do these activities together, you may end up eating chocolate-flavoured soap!!) and finally,

having a neighbourly chat whilst leaving the soaps to set hard in the fridge.

Morgaan talked us through a variety of techniques and gave us great ideas for fur ther experimentation – yes you guessed it, you’re all getting soap for Mother’s Day! Thanks to all who attended this fun evening, especially to Morgaan for sharing her knowledge, and to Mr Kitto for letting us use the school kitchen – hopefully there’ll be no bubbles when the children have their next cooking lessons!

ave you shopped at the Woomera Board Thrift Shop lately?

If you haven’t been there, it’s time to check it out, as all the goods are gradually being placed in size, type, colour, and any other kind of sorting to enhance the buyer experience.

The shop sells secondhand clothing, books, magazines, crockery, toys and assorted goods at extremely reasonable prices, and is staffed by a fantastic raft of 5RRR volunteers who keep the shop in tip top order.

“I work there during the week to meet people, make friends, and it’s an enjoyable way to spend my time”, says volunteer Pat Harris, who spends much of her week unpacking goods donated, and placing on racks for immediate sale or stored for later sale when the seasons change.

Customers to the shop include locals, but there is an ever-increasing trade coming from nearby Roxby Downs, Andamooka, Pimba and travellers up and down the Stuart Highway.

It is thanks to Mrs Kim Edwards, Peter Edwards, Pat Harris, Lil Rooney and Frances Fowler, who form the main organising party, and also to the itinerant volunteers who are

Overweight men risk chances of infertility

f you’re worried about the effect scoffing too many fatty foods will have on your waistline, you need to start thinking about what’s happening a little more below the belt. Smoking and heavy drinking have already been named as factors affecting fertility, now excess weight has been added to the list.

According to research by the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, obese men have worse sperm than those within their recommend weight bracket. Scientists examined sperm of over 5,000 men in Scotland, splitting the samples into two groups depending on the subject’s BMI. Men who had an optimal reading of between 20 and 25 had a higher count of normal sperm.

Those who fell into the overweight group on the other hand were found to have a 60 per cent higher probability of producing a low amount of semen and a 40 per cent higher chance of those sperm being abnormal.

There are a number of theories as to why overweight men have problematic sperm. Primarily

Almost another third of cancers are thought to be due to an unhealthy diet. Another third are due to cigarette smoking. Ten per cent of cancers are melanoma: a potentially fatal skin cancer but one that is mostly preventable.

Reduce your risk.

The risk of getting cancer, of any sort and at any age, can be drastically reduced if you adopt the following lifestyle measures: Stop smoking.

Cigarette smoking – even passive smoking – causes many cancers.

You know the drill – 30 minutes or more on most, preferably all, days of the week for general health. To reduce your cancer risk further, do one hour of moderate activity or 30 minutes of vigorous daily.

Stay in shape.

Obesity increases your risk of many of the common cancers. Maintaining a healthy body weight reduces your risk of cancer and many other chronic diseases.

Eat for health.

Choosing a varied diet rich in fruit and vegetables will reduce your cancer risk.

Try to include wholegrain cereals, low-fat dairy and lean meat. Limiting red meat to three-four times per week and steering clear of processed meats will help to reduce your cancer risk too.

Monitor alcohol.

Drinking alcohol increases your risk of cancer. Reduce your intake by adopting alcohol-free days and trying

non-alcoholic drinks.

Be Sun Smart.

Protect yourself against ultraviolet radiation in sunlight by wearing a broadbrimmed hat, clothing to cover your arms, legs and body and wrap-around sunglasses Use shade when you can, especially when UV radiation is high – between 10am and 3pm.

Cover exposed parts of your body with a broad spectrum water-resistant SPF 30-plus sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours. Avoid tanning machines – they also transmit harmful UV radiation – up to five times the UV radiation of the sun.

Early detection Even if you have no family history of cancer, eat right, exercise, don’t smoke and avoid the sun, you can still get the disease. But the earlier the cancer is detected, the more likely you can be cured.

To detect cancer there are two things you can do •Watch out for signs and symptoms and see a doctor if you notice anything unusual.

•Participate in screening programs if they are recommended for you.

Signs that may mean cancer: Look out for lumps and sores that won’t heal (like ulcers in your mouth), coughs or hoarseness that won’t go away, unexplained weight loss, a mole or skin spots that changes size, shape or colour, blood in a bowel motion and changes in your toilet habits.

Sperm is in its optimum production environment at two degrees cooler than the normal body temperature. As obese men have more fat, it stands to reason they are more likely to get overheated.

According to Dr Ghiayath Shayeb, who led the research, losing weight is the first step for overweight men who want to improve their chances of conceiving. “Our findings were quite independent of any other factors and seem to suggest that men who are trying for a baby with their partners should first try to achieve an ideal body weight.”

It makes sense: – the healthier you are, the healthier your sperm will be. Male fertility expert Dr Thomas Walsh from US San Francisco in the US agrees, saying, “If your goal is to family plan, your job is to be the healthiest person you can be.”

The Blind Side

Movie Review

andra Bullock wins her first Oscar with this movie, based on the true story of American footballer Michael Oher.

The Blind Side details a ragsto-shoulder-pads tale of a 16year-old gentle giant of a poor black kid (Quinton Aaron).

With a crack addict mother and no real home, life looks miserable until he is taken in by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock), the rich white Christian wife of a fastfood mogul (Tim McGraw).

Up at their mansion, she provides the first proper bed of Mike’s life, kits him out in new clothes, and easily integrates him with her two kids; a kindhearted cheerleader daughter (Lily Collins) and the excruciatingly precocious Sean Jr (Jae Head).

Then she sets about improving his academic scores with a tutor (Kathy Bates) and gets so

impatient with his whistle-blowing gaffe of a gym coach (Hugh Freeze) that she marches on the field in her high heels and teaches Michael how to play American football herself by telling him to imagine he’s acting as a shield for his “family” of team members.

In fact the film is so weighted in Tuohy’s favour – she never once loses a battle of words or wills in the whole movie – that at one point she even takes herself off to Michael’s old neighbourhood and gets into an argument with a crack dealer, telling him she is a member of the NRA, and always packing. The dealer looks chastened, but you know that in a more grounded movie the next scene would feature Tuohy picking bullets out of her behind.

A virtuous character so sharply confident of her own righteousness badly needs Bullock’s savvy comic timing and appealing toughness to make her bearable.

On the other hand, Michael Oher doesn’t fare so well. What would black folks do without the benevolent intervention of goodhearted white folks? No medium asks this question more often than Hollywood movies.

Indeed, the real Oher has indicated, with very good restraint, that actually he already knew the rules of American football and wasn’t nearly as neutral a character in his own life as Aaron appears to be in the film.

“Big Mike” is a spaniel-eyed, docile, near mute teenager with no interest in girls and who appears to have no friends except his insufferable 12-year-old adopted brother.

Aaron’s helpless gratitude makes him easy to sentimentalise, but a more acute movie would have taken on difficult truths rather than massage realities into trite clichés.

“Troy is a very valuable addition to our team at Roxby Leisure and he has lots of experience in strength and conditioning which will be helpful for our new kettlebulls training,” said the Operations Manager of Roxby Leisure, Michael Esposito.

Roxby Leisure Gym has also gone through some changes, with a new strength and conditioning area.

“We are using a new friendly layout for both males and females and we also implemented the kettlebulls class and the spin cycle, which I invite everyone to give it a go and come along,” Michael said.

The kettlebulls class combines strength and cardio training and can be done by everyone.

oxby Downs Remote Control Car Club (RDRCCC) is a new club dedicated to promoting the responsible use of RC vehicles in an enjoyable and safe, social and competitive environment. It aims to cater for novice to experienced enthusiasts young, old and any gender, with a strong focus on developing youth involvement to ensure the long term future of the club.

What started out as a very small group of people meeting to run their cars on a Sunday afternoon nearly two years ago has quickly developed to a large field of like minded enthusiasts.

“Now we are a registered

non profit club with 15 fully paid members, our own website and two very generous club sponsors (Coates Hire and Holcim),” said a club spokesperson.

“We have over the past eight months built a purpose built off road track and are kicking off our first official race season on April 18 this year. We are endeavouring to visit other clubs in the area and there is a number of possible new clubs about to start (Pt Augusta, Pt Pirie and Kadina) in the future.

We have also been invited to give demonstrations at St Barbs and Andamooka Primary Schools as well as a possible display at the Woomera Township in the future.”

Currently the club is seeking more members to join, as well as the possibility in the future of

incorporating planes and helicopters as well as better facilities / venue.

The spokesperson said, “We are currently looking for more sponsorship in the financial department to assist with the club having insurance policy to cover both club members, club equipment and general public liability cover.

We are more than happy to discuss with anyone interested in assisting us what they will get in coverage/ promotion with the club.“ Future plans and goals of the club, is to develop a second on road track fully sealed to run touring cars, drifting and drag racers with the view to have a round of the South Australian Championship, held in Roxby Downs or even a National round which will bring professional teams to Roxby Downs.

36 contest opening Ambrose day A field of nine teams competed in 36c heat, in the Exact Mining four person opening Ambrose day.

The competition was tough with the first three teams shooting low 60’s off the stick, with the winning team from Woomera golf club taking out the day.

he Precision Engineering Wanderers took out the Roxby Downs Cricket Association Premiership for 09/10 on Saturday with an emphatic victory over red hot favourites Rogues on Saturday.

On what can only be described as atrocious conditions for cricket, both sides have to be commended for taking the field after the oval had been returfed during the week, something that the Roxby Downs Council and The Roxby Downs Cricket Association will have to address in the future to ensure such a thing does not happen again.

Emphatic cricket win for Wanderers

The day started off well for the Minor Premiers after Paul Trotta won the toss and elected to bat and got early runs on the board.

Brad Cox and Ryan Selkirk opened the attack for the Wanderers.

Trotta and Queal opened up for the Rogues and got off to a solid start, taking four from the first over and three from the second over. It wasn’t until the third over that The Wanderers struck with Queal losing his off stump, bowled by Cox with his score on four.

Adrian Boulton came to the crease but never looked comfortable. After surviving only

three balls before playing onto his stumps from outside off.

This gave Cox a double wicket maiden and set the tone for the Swaggies day in the field, with their tails up they would maintain pressure right throughout the day on the Rogues batsmen.

Polujnikoff joined Trotta in the middle and the two put on 12 runs before Polujnikoff chased a wide ball and was caught behind to hand Cox his third wicket in the ninth over, and when Selkirk claimed his first scalp in the tenth over when he removed Trotta with a regulation catch to Craig Wilson at first slip, Rogues were beginning to look very shaky.

Rogues now had two new batsmen at the crease and could not get the scoreboard moving, they were in desperate need of a solid partnership to get some respectability to the scoresheet.

However, the wickets kept tumbling, with Selkirk removing Tutthill in the 12th over with the score on 26, and by now Rogues could feel it slipping away from them.

Brad Cox finished off his spell of bowling with the wicket of Dadleh in the 15th over, giving him figures of 4 / 13. A great effort for his team in the Grand Final. Ryan Selkirk also finished his spell in the 16th over with another wicket, giving him figures of 3 / 16. Both giving their all for the Wanderers and setting up what would be assured as a very gettable run chase.

Jason Carroll and Sean Quinn kept the wickets coming in the final overs and bowled tightly to close out the Rogues innings, with Carroll taking the last three wickets for the Wanderers and only gave away 6 runs, and Quinn keeping it tight at the other end to create some great pressure.

Rogues all out for 45, a score that is believed to be the lowest Grand Final score in Roxby cricket history.

Craig Wilson and Brett Thompson opened the batting for the Wanderers and found batting a little difficult with the outfield in the state it was and some good tight bowling from Adrian Boulton and Toby Ferguson. Wilson took a lot of the strike and was playing well when Boulton trapped him in front with a good piece of bowling.

Wilson was on his way for 12 and the Wanderers were 1 / 15.

Thompson was next to go while trying to get the runs quickly, skying a short ball from Ferguson which was taken comfortably by the keeper Polujnikoff.

This fired Rogues up and got them back in the game if only for a few short overs.

Ryan Selkirk and Matt Watkins then took the game right away from Rogues with Watkins playing the aggressor and taking it to the bowling, hitting a couple of big shots and a square cut for six to get the scores level.

It was a very successful year for Roxby Downs cricket, with the Association team taking out the South Australian country championships and a great local competition, things are in great shape for the Roxby Downs

Cricket Association.

Wow! It’s Wanderers premiership

The Wanderers’ Cricket side had an unexpected easy victory over The Rogues in the Roxby Cricket Association Grand Final on Saturday. Many tipped this one would be a very close game with the two best teams of the year going head to head for the Premiership Shield. Chasing a meagre 45 runs the Wanderers easily reached the winning score for the loss of just two wickets. See the full report and scores on page 19 of this issue.
