HP Billiton revealed last week Doctors Simon Lockwood and Wendy Strachan will remain in town and are expected to move into their new and expanded facilities in May. BHP Billiton has been negotiating with practice owner Dr Simon Lockwood for the past two months and after much turmoil and doubt, the practice will ďŹ nally receive its new home. “BHP Billiton and the Roxby Downs Family

Practice have worked tirelessly to ensure the community continues to have access to top quality medial services,� said Kym Winter-Dewhirst, Olympic Dam Vice President Government and Community Relations. “BHP Billiton recognises that access to health services is very important to the community and we have a long history of supporting our local doctors. “We assisted Dr Lockwood when he relocated to Roxby Downs from Woomera and will continue to help by making sure his premises are

ready in time.�

Doctors Lockwood and Strachan will continue seeing patients from their current location in the Leisure Centre Building until the renovations necessary to their new facility in Gregory Street are completed. “BHP Billiton has demonstrated a real commitment to working with us. They have a team of people who are helping to get our new rooms ready and we are very grateful for their supports,� said Dr Simon Lockwood.

“We are also grateful for the concern the community has shown and would like to reassure everyone that we will be staying in town and will continue to see patients as usual.�

BHP Billiton has also liaised extensively with Roxby Downs Council to ensure the smooth transition of the practice to its new premises and to comply with building approvals.

A Time To Mourn I enjoyed growing up around the beautiful Dandenong Ranges of Victoria but each summer we were on constant red alert for bush fires.

The moment you smelt smoke and heard sirens was the moment you looked to the hills to see how far away the fires were.

Some of the fires were small, some were huge and life threatening but most of the time they were deliberately lit. The CFA (Country Fire Authority) were just as awesome in those days as they are now except the fire equipment of today has obviously improved.

But as good as fire fighting equipment can be there are fires that, for lots of different reasons, are damn near impossible to stop. In fact some fires are so bad they aren’t able to be put out but rather controlled in the hope they burn out.

I’m no fire fighter but because the small town where I grew up rests at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges (30 km east of Melbourne) many of us were asked to jump on the back of a fire truck to help out when towns and houses were threatened by raging fires.

A National Day of Mourning was called on February 22 to remember the victims, the missing and the emergency workers of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria. But tragically, as people stopped to mourn, the bush fires continued to blaze out of control.

In fact as the fires continued to burn out of control new fires reared up in the Dandenong Ranges and towns I know like the back of my hand are on standby for evacuation.

Kevin Rudd has said February 7 will become etched in our national memory as a day of disaster, death and of mourning and it is very important that the nation grieves. It’s wonderful to hear a leader speak like that because taking time to mourn, reflect and remember is of vital importance to our healing mechanism.

I had the misfortune to be around so called leaders not long after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that triggered off a tsunami that killed more than 225,000 people in eleven countries. All I heard from the insensitive pompous “leaders” was how bad the media was to create such hype when there are people dying of starvation every day.

Yes, shocking atrocities are happening around the world every day and yes much, much more should be done to help out and to stop it from happening. But that doesn’t mean the media shouldn’t report on other tragedies that occur around us and it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fundraise and take time to stop and mourn.

My sister and her family lived in a little village in the Dandenong Ranges through the 1980s Ash Wednesday fires and their home was the only one in the street that was untouched by the fires. Every house on the street bar my sister’s home was burnt to the ground as was so

many other homes across Victoria and South Australia.

My sister and her husband were completely devastated by the ferocity of the fires and both said the intense heat, roar and wind that came before the flames was the scariest thing they had ever experienced.

It’s incredible to think that whilst one state is fighting devastating bush fires that have so far killed 208 people, incinerated hundreds of homes, left thousands homeless, destroyed commercial buildings, schools, shattered communities, erased thousands of hectares of land and has killed untold amounts of native animals and livestock.

Another state is fighting devastating floods which has caused profound property damaged, killed unknown amount of livestock and has completely shattered the lives of so many.

Such loss leaves us all so speechless. To be a victim of something so catastrophic would be indescribable. The grief and emotional shock for so many will of course continue indefinitely but thanks to last Sunday’s (Feb 22) National Day of Mourning, the process of healing and rebirth has began.

There is always a time to mourn and Australia’s Governor-General; Quentin Bryce was right when she said at the community memorial service in Melbourne on Sunday (Feb 22)…“the unthinkable we must think, the unimaginable we must see, the unspeakable we must speak, the unbearable we must weep.”

I so love those words (including the plural ‘we’) because although there are times to weep alone and in private when weighed down by grief, there are also times when we need to unite with others because we have so much to give each other in times of grief.

A little girl told her parents that she had called in to see the grieving mother of her best little playmate at school after she had been told her best little playmate had died. The little girl’s parents asked with concern, “What did you say?”

“Nothing,” replied the little girl. “I just climbed up on her lap and cried with her.”

The little girl sets a wonderful example for all of us. Imagine the immense help and comfort she must have been for the grieving mum and imagine the immense help and comfort the grieving mum must have been for the little girl.

Imagine also the relief and comfort the little girl and the grieving mother must have been for the parents of the little girl and for so many others. Something happens within us when we meet with those whom we trust in times of trauma or sorrow and it’s all because of just being there together as one.

RDAS introduces leaders

he 2009 leaders of Roxby Downs Area School were formally introduced to the community at an assembly in the Leisure Centre last week.

The entire school gathered to recognise the new leaders and staff offered many words of wisdom to the students.

Family and Youth Officer Tom Beever, the guest of honour, had words of encouragement and advice for the student leaders.

Mr Beever told students an anecdote about an American surgeon, Ben Carson, a trouble-maker at school but who grew up to be an exceptional neurosurgeon.

Mr Beever equated Carson’s mother with that of a leader, who could see the potential in her son and pushed him towards greatness.

Mr Beever told the new student leaders that a true leader has the ability to inspire others to achieve greatness.

“People want someone who can see what needs to be done, can lead the way and encourage and

inspire others,” he said.

The Reception to Year 12 Student Voice Committee was then introduced to the school along with the sports House Captains and the School Captains.

According to RDAS Principal, Kath Macalister, the four Year 12 students selected as captains endured a rigorous and competitive process of applications and interviews to convince the committee they had what it takes to serve the school.

Jody Luscombe and Tim West are the Captains and Tristan Warneke and Georgina Chinner Vice Captains.

“Excited and honoured” was how they felt about becoming student leaders.

“We’re excited to be able to make a difference, to leave our legacy,” the Captains told The Monitor.

The Captains addressed students, outlining their intentions for the school which include exciting events for the students, discovering the changes and improvements needed and to improve the family feel of the school.

The Monitor congratulates all the elected school leaders and Captains and wishes them the best for the 2009 year.

oxby Downs Area School is advancing its technology program with the purchase of ten robotic kits.

Thanks to a grant from BHP Billiton, the school was able to buy the NXT robotic units to help students develop an interest in the topic.

RDAS teacher Hassan Bhatti told The Monitor the new students found the robotics “very engaging”.

“They just rush in at the start of the lesson and everyone is very busy with the robotics,” he said.

The NXT robotics require students to assemble the machine and program them to follow commands, responding to sound, touch and light sensors.

“The computer programming is very interesting for the students.”

While playing with robots may seem slightly non-educational, these machines are actually the corner-stone of science today.

With a background in robotics, students will be able to enter professions that benefit medical sciences, space programs, Information Technology and a range of other robotic sciences.

The robotics lessons have also, according to Mr Bhatti, reduced behavioural issues amongst students.

“It’s very engaging, keeping the students on task; there are no behavioural issues.”

Mr Bhatti hopes the students will advance enough to enter national student competitions programming robots for soccer games, rescue missions and dance contests. www.themonitor.com.au

Schools to accelerate Serviced offices almost ready local building works R

Local schools are pushing ahead with plans to convert Federal Government funds into around $7 million worth of building projects that could be on foot by May. Kath Macalister, principal of Roxby Downs Area School, told The Monitor last week that Department of Education and Children’s Services (DECS) planners were putting the finishing touches to plans to build a $3 million multi-purpose hall for Roxby Downs primary school.

The new multi-purpose hall would be built on a site adjacent to the school that is yet to be determined but it would be near the Recreation Centre according to Macalister. Dance and drama would be the focus of the school’s use of the new hall.

Another smaller scale project is for the two Roxby Downs schools and Anda-

mooka to receive $200,000 each to fund maintenance that had been put off.

Part of a scheme labelled National School Pride, the scheme is modelled on one initiated by Premier Rann called School Pride of two years ago.

This scheme will involve small scale building jobs such as painting and shadecloth and other long put off maintenance programs.

Macalister said she would be tendering the jobs to the local building industry within a couple of months.

The new school hall is being donated by the Federal Government on the condition it is made available to community groups after hours at low cost.

Principal Macalister said the $3 million available under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century was subject to a tight timeframe but DECS designers were already well advanced in negotiations with the Roxby Council.

The money is available to get the building industry going nationally and schools must use the money asap or lose it.

Consisting of a 10-seater boardroom and two spacious offices, Roxby Serviced Offices is designed for visiting specialists to work from when in Roxby and for locals needing office facilities.

The offices have taken approximately six weeks to complete by MPS Building and Electrical who turned the bare building into an aesthetically pleasing environment for clients.

“It’s good to see someone come up here and support the community by

providing this service,” said Lee Richardson of MPS. “We haven’t seen anything like this before and the planning and research has been extensive and will be good for the community by bringing business to Roxby.

“Craig and Sandy (Sumsion) have been great to work with and it’s good MPS could be a part of this project.”

According to Sandy Sumsion of Raine and Horne, the offices provide exclusivity to clients and contain a great deal of space.

Clients will also have the opportunity to be given a key to their office for the duration of their stay, which enables them to leave their equipment on the premises instead

of packing up and carting supplies around every night.

“This should provide an efficient way of doing business,” said Sandy.

Clients can pay for membership to use the facilities or hire the rooms on a needs basis.

The offices provide stationery and equipment and the board room can be used for any meetings.

The office also includes bathroom and kitchen facilities and storage lockers for clients.

The world has reached Andamooka

“

The world has reached Andamooka,” says the town’s unofficial mayor and chief executive, Peter Allen.

He was commenting on a move by the SA Government to revamp the Outback Areas Development Trust with the aim of delivering better local government for small outback communities.

The move to improve local governance in towns like Andamooka, Oodnadatta, Copley, Marree and William Creek has been welcomed by Allen because: “It’s got to be better than what we’ve got now.”

The government has worked up a Bill, the Outback Communities (Administration and Management) Bill 2009.

The new regime will establish a new Outback Community Authority (OCA) with seven members, to replace the Outback Areas Community Development Trust.

“So the government needs to understand we have a pretty unique culture of self-help and survival out here,” Allen said.

But Allen is confident the increased State government involvement with the town will be an improvement.

Says Gail Gago: “The outback areas face diverse challenges so it is important that communities have up to date governance structures in place to manage local affairs for the benefit of communities whilst upholding a strong sense of community spirit.

Andamooka residents kick in for Victorian bushfires

he Andamooka community last fortnight raised almost $8,000 in one night for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

Hundreds of people flocked to the Tuckerbox on February 20 to enjoy a barbie, a few drinks and an auction that collected $7,700 for the victims in Victoria.

bles told The Monitor he was watching the bushfires on television and had the idea to help his fellow Aussies out.

“I thought this is what we can do for them and bang we did it,” said Wobbles.

The Tuckerbox provided a barbie, charging a $10 door fee which went to the Red Cross Appeal and several businesses and people donated prizes for the raffle and auction which was held on the night.

The event was put together in just a couple of days’ and the raffle alone lasted only three days before all tickets were sold.

APOMA showed its support by supplying a free bus to and from Roxby to allow more people to attend the event, making the night a fantastic success.

“We though if we got maybe a grand we would be doing alright and then before the auction even started we had raised about three grand,” said Wobbles.

Special thanks must go to Roxby Travel and Alliance Airlines for providing the raffle’s first prize of two return tickets to Adelaide.

Second prize was a silver opal inlaid ring donated by the Opal Showroom and third prize was a $100 IGA voucher.

Over the past weeks, the Andamooka community has been doing its part to help the bushfire victims.

The fundraising for the appeal which has passed through the Andamooka Post Office has totalled $9,892.40 and continues to climb as the residents of

this small town give generously to those in need.

Andamooka volunteers have undergone lifeguard and First Aid training to ensure the swimming pool remains open to the public.

Eight Andamooka residents underwent several days of training to comply with the law of having trained lifeguards supervise the town’s swimming pool.

APOMA has graciously covered the costs of the courses.

However Chairperson Peter Allen has said they may need to find money to employ fulltime lifeguards as they “can’t keep relying on volunteers”.

The pool is open approximately five days a week for roughly two hours a day, which may not seem

much but as Peter stated, “at least it’s something”.

The funds for the pool were originally donated by Peter Vlack an opal miner who decided there was a need for swimming facilities.

It was built on school land and has since been operated in conjunction with the school.

Letters to the Editor Courage to speak out I am thankful that we have people representing the community of Roxby Downs who are courageous enough to speak out as Tom Beever has in the article in last week’s Monitor.

I have experienced the unfair treatment handed out by people in managerial positions while working in Roxby and have seen the effects of their power wielding upon others who I worked with.

As Tom mentioned they think that their position gives them the right to lie, intimidate and disrupt relations among workers.

One of these people also thinks they have the right to use a disabled parking zone as it is close to where they manage a facility supposed to be for the community.

It is not only workers

who are subjected to bullying and power tripping but as mentioned in an article in the paper last year, community groups are neglected and things such as arts and entertainment virtually non existent for young and old.

e is Bill Nicholas (pictured) who took up the role last week.

The younger people who work under the influence of these people may be led to believe that bullying and powering over others is the attitude to adopt if they are to succeed in work life in the future.

Thanks Tom for outlining these problems and maybe somehow we can bring about some changes for the better for people working and living in Roxby.

Roxby needs longer pool opening hours when temps are high!

I am sure that many Roxby Citizens think that the pool should be open for longer when temperatures reach 40+.

I was at the pool on the Saturday that the temperatures reached a record high of 48 degrees. I counted 60 people at the pool, but it was still shut at the usual time of 8PM, and we all had to go home. A few years back my mum said they used to keep the pool open for longer if the weather was over 40 degrees and there were enough people there.

I would have thought that over 60+ people still being there would make it worthwhile!

I’m not sure about other people but when it’s 40+ I want to swim in the pool.

Not everyone has a pool in their back yard and it is just too hot to come any earlier.

I think they should keep the pool open till 9-9:30 when it’s over 40.

The Investiture went for a while and I heard a lot of scouts say I want to go back in the pool but they couldn’t because it was closing time.

I invite other residents of Roxby to write to the Editor what they think of the pool opening hours?

An experienced journalist, Nicholas came from the Independent Weekly in Adelaide where he was finance editor.

An economics graduate from Flinders University, he started in journalism with the Stock Journal, moved to The Advertiser and was the finance editor of The News, Rupert Murdoch’s first media business.

Nicholas went from journalism into corporate public relations where he managed media relations for various business organisations and companies including many mining companies.

After many years of managing media relations for clients, Nicholas decided to return to the media as a working reporter.

“Being a reporter is a lot more fun than trying to manipulate and manage news for clients,” Nicholas said.

“Every day brings a different story with different people to meet and places to go.

“I’m loving it here at Roxby. Being at Andamooka the other day was a

total knockout and I can’t wait to get into the bush to see more of the great country around here.

“I never realised how beautiful the arid outback can be and how well the environment is being looked after by everybody.”

Nicholas, a keen but ordinary golfer, has already had a look at the Roxby Downs course and will be a keen starter when the season kicks off.

He had hands-on experience as a driller and bulldozer operator for Exoil, a uranium exploration outfit that was operating around Mount Painter in the northern Flinders Ranges about 30 years ago.

“I’m looking forward to becoming a member of the community and hope people will find me as approachable as the rest of the staff.

Nicholas is enthusiastic to learn of the intricate details of Roxby Downs and hopes to continue promoting The Monitor as your community newspaper.

Roxby Downs Scout Troop will be holding a bottle drive on Saturday April 4 to raise money for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

Already $1,000 has been donated to the appeal by the Scouts, with the hopes of raising another two or three thousand.

“It’s going to be a good day, all the sections are involved and we’ll probably have a barbie afterwards,” said Acting Scout Group Leader, Scott Martin.

The Scouts have asked people put their bottles at the end of their property and not on the driveway, which is council land.

“The fundraising will be good for the kids to think about other people instead of them-

selves and give them the sense they are putting in to the bushfire appeal,” said Scott.

If anyone has large quantities they wish to donate, please call the Scouts on 8671 2715 to arrange an earlier pick up.

The bottle drive will commence at 8.30am on April 4 and run until noon.

All proceeds and donations will go towards the bushfire appeal, and will be matched by the BHPB Matched Giving Program.

“I think it’s just good for the kids to get out there and be seen,” said Scott.

“It’s all about recycling and teaching the kids you have to put a bit in to get a bit out.”

Out and About ...at a successful day of pancakes Saint Barbara’s parish school held its annual pancake day on Tuesday February 24, raising $237.05, with all money going to the Catholic Mission.

Over 450 pancakes were eaten by the students and staff, making Pancake Day extremely successful.

Record turnout for Clean-up Day

The Clean-up Australia day ended with a sausage sizzle at the Lions Park.

Moss thanked BHP Billiton for sponsoring the event by supply gloves and the tools to pick up the garbage safely.

The caterer of the Olympic Damp village, Sodexo, donated all the food and drinks for the sizzle and the council provided the barbecue’s volunteer chef, works manager, Peter Keller.

Building contract let for RSL Memorial

R

oxby Downs is set to get its new centrepiece, an RSL Community Memorial, in a key location in the middle of town.

A contract to build the Roxby Downs RSL Community Memorial has been awarded to the York Civil of Roxby Downs. Work on the memorial will start on March 15.

Project Manager Alan Male, who is also manager of the Rec Centre, said the new memorial would become the major iconic feature within the busi-

ness district of Roxby Downs.

“The sheer scale of the memorial and its key location will make the memorial the centrepiece of the town well into the future,” Mr Male said.

“It will become a daily reminder to all of the significant sacrifices made by our service men and women,” he said.

“It will also add to the rich local Vietnam heritage whilst improving a local community meeting space.”

Greens target acid leach mining Greens MLC Mark Parnell has expressed alarm at a proposal to use acid in-situ leaching to mine uranium in the Far North.

The Beverley Four Mile Mine is reportedly planning to use the controversial insitu leaching process to extract uranium.

“The Beverley Four Mile mine will deliberately infuse sulphuric acid into a publicly owned water aquifer and then after they have finished, the mining company intends to walk away without doing any rehabilitation of the precious groundwater resources,” said Mr Parnell.

“How can anyone call that ‘world’s best practice’?”

The in-situ leaching method consists of boreholes drilled into a saturated sandstone aquifer and the surrounding water treated with chemicals. This dissolves the uranium from the orebody and is pumped to the surface through other boreholes and the uranium recovered .

The process has been called controversial because of the acid leaching process.

Environmental groups have raised concerns over the acidification of groundwater, the mobilisation of potential hazardous heavy metals, including radioactive ones, and the destruction of habitat for stygofauna and other rock-inhabiting organisms.

“The in-situ process is highly controversial – with very good reason. Pumping acid into the soil and aquifers will leave behind acid and radioactive wastes for many years to come,” said Mr Parnell.

“For this reason, no acid leach mine has ever been allowed to operate in the USA, and in Eastern Europe, groundwater has been left heavily polluted.

“Yet, despite the terrible record overseas, the South Australian Government is continuing to turn a blind eye to this massive abuse of the State’s water aquifers. To not even require the company to do even basic rehabilitation is simply scandalous.”

Mr Parnell added that not only would Australian uranium continue to hit the international nuclear market but we would be trashing the environment during the mining process.

The Greens have again called on the Prime Minister to re-examine the Government’s support for the expansion of uranium mining in Australia.

“At the very least, the Government must insist on the comprehensive rehabilitation of our groundwater aquifers before they approve any more use of the destructive acid leaching technology.”

Zeppy’s reviews Movie review: Lakeview Terrace

Racism reversed The writers of Lakeview Terrace seem to have the right idea when it comes to creating a great story: take what’s been done and flip it around.

That’s exactly what they have done with this prejudice driven film about a black man with a grudge against a white guy.

The grudge is not simple, far from it in fact and will have the audience re-examining their perceptions of racism.

Lakeview Terrace has a simple storyline with a deep and captivating result. LAPD officer Abel Turner (Samuel L Jackson) seems like an ordinary man.

He is doing the best he can raising his children while patrolling the streets to put away the bad guys. But when an interracial couple move in next door, his demeanour quickly switches to one of contempt.

From the moment he lays eyes on them, it is clear Turner does not approve of the mix between a white man and a black woman and so he sets out to destroy their relationship and remove them from his neighbourhood.

What makes this film work so well is the way in which Turner displays his prejudice.

It begins subtle at first, a simple comment here and there and slowly but surely it begins to escalate to spiteful and violent actions.

The loving father and protective cop suddenly becomes the neighbour from hell in his unfounded attempts to keep the races pure.

The acting in Lakeview Terrace is done exceptionally well. Jackson portrays the prejudiced neighbour with such conviction I found myself developing a total hatred of the man.

His attempts to force his neighbours apart and away from the neighbourhood is played superbly, beginning subtle and steadily building to a climatic crescendo.

The acting from Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington, who play the interracial couple looking to start afresh, is wonderful. They seem like a very natural couple; nothing special or overly eye-catching, just ordinary people.

Wilson plays his role with conviction, truly immersing himself within the skin of an average suburban man.

He is slightly cowardly, obnoxious and flawed like many people, which makes him so easy to identify with. And Washington as the wife is so good I could not flaw her acting.

This film is not marvellous in production and I doubt it will be receiving many awards but it is a solid story and will captivate you from the get go.

Some scenes display the lack of a budget, particularly the fire scenes where the smoke in the distance can be instantly recognised as a painting, but the scenes that matter are done well enough.

Book Review: Ice Station

Action packed an understatement To say Matthew Reilly’s Ice Station is action, action and more action is a vast understatement.

Not once in this book does the action die or the pace slow down.

It just keeps on coming and coming with relentless force until readers are so worn out they need to put the book down and catch their breath.

I was warned about this book becoming addictive and exhausting and like most when warned, I discarded the advice with the intention of forming my own opinion. I should have listened.

Every chapter was like running a marathon; my eyes would dart from one word to the next with at a speed I thought was impossible as I so desperately wanted to reach the end.

The plot of the novel is simple and while everything happens fast, the plot actually progresses quite slowly.

We begin with the discovery of a “spaceship” buried deep within the ice in Antarctica by a group of American scientists.

Instantly, the pace of the novel is set as the scientists experi-

ence trouble that cuts them off from the world.

Enter an elite Marine reconnaissance unit with the mission of securing the “spaceship” and determining what happened to the scientists.

Alas the plans change and the Marines suddenly find themselves up against opposing nations, all with the desire of claiming the “spaceship” for themselves.

We begin with the French. Diplomacy is kicked out the door as French troops invade the station and a deadly battle for supremacy ensues.

It is action following action in this fast paced battle sequences, which lasts for over 100 pages.

Before monotony can set in over a simple shoot out, the marines find themselves in trouble with a pod of man eating killer whales.

Lives are lost in horrific and very creative ways as the seemingly harmless creatures of the deep show just how dangerous they can be.

If this wasn’t enough, we add another opposing nation with plans of securing the “spaceship” and the fighting begins anew.

Throw in a secret government agency

with plans of eliminating everyone who knows about the “spaceship” and the thrills never stop.

The action is as fast as a movie and rarely relents.

Exhaustion ensues from simply reading this book, begging the question how can a battle scene prove to be so captivating when written on paper?

Matthew Reilly has taken a simple idea and turned it into a 600 page adrenaline thrill ride that will have you hanging suspense.

The creativity of this novel, as well as the captivating events that set the pace of the story displays the depth of Reilly’s talent.

It is no wonder he has become an international best seller with his series of books thrilling novels.

Ice Station is definitely one for the adrenaline seeking action junkies. With action as intense as it is in Ice Station, it wouldn’t surprise me if there was a Hollywood move adaptation somewhere in the works.

Thrills, action and imagination propel this novel forward and without a doubt, Ice Station is one of the best action books I have ever read.

The new rules were drafted following consultation with the community and have been endorsed by the Environment Forum, the Community Board, The Roxby Administrator and the Dog and Cat Management Board.

“After a concerted period of community consultation in 2007 and early 2008, it has taken another year of waiting for the cogs of bureaucracy to slowly turn,” said spokesperson John Read.

“We are relieved to have now achieved the first step of our objective to improve the management and welfare of Roxby’s pets.”

According to Read, the keen advocates for more stringent rules have been cat owners themselves, who reportedly recognise the benefits of containing their pets.

Already several residents have established cat runs or aviaries to contain their cats and others have trained their cats to be content in their households.

Roxby Council Pet Management Officer Peter Keller said Council was supportive of the new initiatives of treating cats and dogs the same.

Police report Police investigating break-in, robbery at OD footy club Police are investigating a break-in at the Olympic Dam Football Club recently after $1500 had been stolen.

According to Sergeant Stuart Paxton, Officer in Charge of the Roxby Downs Police Station, police attended the Olympic Dam Football Club after it was reported that the money had been taken from the security box on Tuesday February 24.

“Police have searched two premises and interviewed two suspects without any charges being laid as yet,” said Sergeant Paxton.

Further enquiries are being made.

A 20 year old male has been arrested following a domestic disturbance in a private house in Roxby Downs.

“At about 10.30pm on Friday February 27, Police arrested a 20 year old male after

he assaulted his female partner at a Roxby Downs address,” the police reports said.

The man also attacked the victim’s plasma television causing about $1600 damage.

“The victim received minor bruising as a result of the assault,” said Sergeant Paxton.

And Andamooka police acted quickly to put a stop to some hoon driving.

At about 8.45pm on Saturday February 28, a 24 year old male was reported for misuse of a motor vehicle.

The man was observed by Andamooka Police sustaining front wheel spin of his vehicle outside the Opal Inn before driving away.

“Roxby Police stopped the man 10kms east of Roxby Downs where he was dealt with.”

Wanderers crush Rogues

anderers crushed a depleted Roxby Rogues by 106 runs at the town oval on Sunday morning with Jason Carroll taking 5/9 from seven overs for the Swaggies.

After the top order had been breached the Rogues batting line up had no answer to the swing bowling of Carroll and were bundled out for 83.

Wanderers made 189 with several batsmen making scores against an attack missing Toby Ferguson, Paul Trotta and other useful bowlers in Richie McDonald and Bill Hiscox.

Ryan Selkirk top scored on 34 and fellow opener Craig Wilson made 30, Damian Smith and Matt Watkins posted 27 each and Carroll compiled 26.

Leading wicket taker for Rogues was Steven Pakpoy with 3/35 while Randall Wyatt and Rick Walker claimed two each.

After posting two consecutive scores in excess of 180 runs the home side were unceremoniously dismissed for 74 runs in 21.5 overs.

The West Adelaide Football Club (WAFC) has taken over the Roxby Downs Zone and is already establishing itself in the community and surrounding regions.

Zone Coordinator Allan Brand and Talent Manager Simon Hughes made their first visit to Roxby Downs last week where they met locals and presented a coaching clinic at the Roxby Downs Area School.

It is West Adelaide’s job to promote football within rural commu-

nities and identify talent within the town.

“It’s totally new for us, being so remote, but there’s some great talent in town and it will be terrific to been a part of educating that talent,” said Brand.

“The Bloods have landed,” added Hughes.

Both Brand and Hughes spent their two days in Roxby meeting with local football identities, eying off the town’s talent and observing the local footy clubs.

The WAFC is a proud supporter of

rural football and strives to offer support to the upcoming players with the potential to play for their club.

Roxby locals have the opportunity with the WAFC to be selected to play for their team and as Brand put it, the club is there to help with the relocation to Adelaide.

“We try to help ease the burden of having to travel and we create many opportunities for the kids,” he said.

WAFC provides accommodation for new team members and has a strong relationship with Henley High in Adelaide for students to

study while pursuing their passion for footy.

Brand told The Monitor WAFC members plan to make an appearance in town hopefully once a month and will be returning shortly to offer an information session to the town outlining the intentions of the club and what it can do for Roxby.

Keep your eyes open for the representatives from West Adelaide Football Club who will be on the look out for new blood to join the Bloods.

Olympic Dam all-rounder Charl Botes who took 3/9 from eight overs and made 31 as an opening batsmen.

Other wicket takers for the visitors were Phil Stacey (3/14), Allan Woolford (2/10) and Joel Nicholson with 1/41.

The Devils made hard work of chasing the small total with some rather expansive batting and lost 4 wickets in a mainly unconvincing display that produced 77 runs in 20 overs.

Simon Turner claimed the scalps of Botes and Craig Nichols who fell to a brilliant catch in the gully by Joey Payne while Andy Searle and Steve White took a wicket each.
