Strong support for Anzac Day services FAR NORTH REGION…Veterans and residents across the Far North Region commemorated Anzac Day on Sunday, April 25. Organisers across the region reported steady crowds for services and events throughout the day. Bob Stainer, president of the R&SL Roxby Downs sub branch reported a ‘good turnout’ for the morning service in Richardson Place. “We were really pleased with the support considering it was school holidays,” he told The Monitor last week. “The dawn service was well-attended with more than 100 people out at Olympic Dam. “It was a beautiful crisp morning and lots of fun with the traditional games. “It was nice to see a few familiar faces back in town for the service. “People at the reunion were well looked after by the volunteers, especially Ros Harris who kept everyone fed on the day. “Our fundraising was very successful and we’re looking forward to sending some monies off to the Anzac Day Appeal and Legacy.” In Andamooka almost 20 people attended the 9am service at the APOMA Park for a simple but thoughtful commemoration. While in Woomera attendance was strong, with around 30 people attending the dawn service and another 50 at the morning commemorations. “After the Dawn service it was back to the Club rooms for a hot drink and traditional bacon and egg breakfast,” Woomera R&SL sub branch president Franke Woolfe told The Monitor. “By the end of breakfast the sun had come out and the day was warming up, which made it more pleasurable to be out for the morning service. “The march was only a small one this year, made up of ExService personnel and persons representing their family members. “Traditional games - which were also well attended - were played in the afternoon such as ‘two-up’ and ‘Crown and Anchor’.” Mr Woolfe thanked Rev. Tom Beever and the many community members and R&SL members who contributed to TWO-UP…Woomera R&SL sub branch president Frank Woolfe leads the two-up at Anzac Day with R&SL committee members Garry Clarke and Tony Place. the day.
