Iraq has formally invited Australia’s mining giant, BHP Billiton to exploit the country’s oil and gas reserves. Speaking exclusively with The Monitor newspaper, the Iraqi ambassador to Australia, Ghania Al-Shibli said he expected BHP Billiton to be exploring in Iraq within two to three years. “BHP did work in southern Iraq before the war and we hope to have them back very soon because we hold the world’s third largest known oil and gas reserves that remain untapped,” he said. Mr. Al-Shibli made the comments during the recent tour of Roxby Downs by more than 50 ambassadors from countries such as the United States, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. “BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam mine is highly regarded around the world for its impressive safety focus, not only for its workforce but also for the environment

and its social conscious towards Roxby Downs,” he said. “Our Minister for Oil was here just a couple of months ago to hold talks with BHP Billiton and since that visit we have formally invited the company into Iraq. “It will not happen overnight, as such big companies need to get their strategies and planning right before they make the move. “But they’ll be in Iraq inside five years, possibly as soon as a couple of years,” the ambassador said. “I have no doubt it will be a large investment because of the amount of untapped oil and gas we have. “Iraq has more than 50% unemployment so we will welcome BHP Billiton into our country. “By doing so we will take the initiative from the terrorists by employing our people, that is the key to ending the conflict,” Mr. Al-Shibli said.
