Since its inception two years ago, the program has opened up more than 60 opportunities on-site for indigenous people, both in the employee and contractor workforce at Olympic Dam. The IPP is based on a major Agreement with three Aboriginal groups claiming an interest in the Olympic Dam region and embodies BHP Billiton’s Charter aim of ensuring communities in which it operates benefit from the presence of its operations. “The IPP has been tailored to meet indigenous aspirations for employment, enterprise development and capacity building,” explains IPP Program Director, Jamie Love. Since the endorsement of the Indigenous Participation Program (IPP) Action Plan, a range of initiatives have been implemented and trialled in line with the initial strategy to undertake a broad range of projects to identify effective approaches to Indigenous training, employment, enterprise development
