ast week saw SA Premier Mike Rann visit Roxby Downs for a Community Cabinet Meeting held in the Council Board Room.

Before the meeting Mr Rann, accompanied by Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith, stopped in at Roxby Downs Area School to talk to the Year 10-12 students about the future.

In true politician style, Mr Rann was delayed and Dr LomaxSmith opened the special assembly.

The focus of Dr Lomax-Smith’s speech was encouraging students to remain in school and continue with their studies.

She spoke about the need to obtain qualifications that would help with employment and put emphasis on the Maths and Science subjects.

“You are lucky here (in Roxby Downs) because the job opportunities are fabulous,” she told the students.

Shortly after the Education Minister concluded her speech, Mr Rann arrived and immediately addressed the students.

Like Dr Lomax-Smith, Mr Rann pressed the need for students to remain in school and continue with their education.

“My message today is for you all to remain in the learning system,” said Mr Rann.

“Stay in school and embrace the future and higher education.”

Of course, with the recent release of the Olympic Dam Environmental Impact Statement, Mr Rann was keen to discuss mining, urging the students to pursue careers in science and engineering to provide support for the many mines in South Australia.

Mr Rann said there would be hundreds of job opportunities opening at the Olympic Dam mine once the expansion commenced and there were over 20 new mines in the pipeline.

The importance of home I hope Mother’s Day was a special day of celebration for you and your family but I especially hope it was a great day for all mum’s because there is something very special about the love of a mum.

Of course there is something very special about the love of a dad but most families would have gone out of their way last Sunday to remember the special love of their mum.

Telephones would have rung, presents would have been given, flowers would have been sent and words of love would have been exchanged between children and their mums right across the country.

Sadly however, for some, Mother’s Day is just another day because the relationship with their mum wasn’t or isn’t all that crash hot.

But hopefully all dads got into the joy of Mother’s Day with their children so that love and laughter echoed through the home.

Someone once said your home should become a light that illuminates the entire street and community and I like that because home should not only be the best place on earth, but its love, nurture and care should be evident to those around us.

Speaking of home, I had the privilege to bump into Kath McAllister (RDAS Principal) just after she returned home to Roxby after her husband had died.

Kath was beautiful.

She spoke with such warmth and composure.

Kath thanked me for my articles that focused upon the dangers of smoking and encouraged me to continue to write about the killing capacity of cigarette smoking because her husband had contracted lung cancer twenty five years after having given up.

Kath also spoke of the reason why she returned home to Roxby so quick after the funeral of her husband.

Kath said the comfort and support she has experienced from so many in Roxby (especially in her place of work) meant there was no other place she would rather be at this time.

Kath’s conviction and gentle voice almost peeled me undone. It was a beautiful encounter with a grieving lady who had decided to come home because this was the place for her to

work through her grief and to build her life.

Home should be the most important place in the world. If its not, make the necessary changes because it should be.

Kath’s right, home isn’t bricks and mortar but rather a place where we feel connected and cared for.

The home I grew up in has changed so much. My Pa, who lived with us, passed away when I was ten.

My dad passed away in 2005; my mum has moved out of our family home and is by choice living in a nursing home.

The home I grew up has been sold and everything mum and dad wanted us children to have has now been divided between us.

What hasn’t changed are my beautiful memories of home and growing up.

Home for me was indeed a place where memories were made, relationships were built and a place where children and family grew together and I hope that’s how my children see home and I hope that is what home is like for you.

Home is meant to be the most wonderful place on earth but in my opinion there are three vital elements that make a healthy home: healthy relationships between family members, the right atmosphere and mutual respect to all.

Healthy communication, love and laughter will always be natural ingredients woven amongst the three vital elements and no home will function without them.

What’s home life for you? If changes need to be made, prioritize and make them now.

Work on them together and enjoy the fruit for there is nothing more important than a healthy home.

Government to fund community manager for Andamooka A

ndamooka is to get a salaried Community Manager at long last.

The Outback Areas Community Development Trust and the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association (APOMA) have announced a partnership based on a shared vision for Andamooka.

This partnership will soon be supported by the State Government through the Trust of a Community Manager utilising State and Commonwealth funds.

It is hoped that the position, to be filled by the end of June, will consolidate the partnership between APOMA and the Trust and provide professional assistance to manage the Andamooka community.

Minister for State / Local Government Relations, Gail Gago, met with the groups last week while in Roxby Downs for a Community Cabinet.

“I have been listening to the needs of the Andamooka area and understand the great pressures being imposed by the region’s rapid expansion,” the Minister said.

“That’s why I urged the trust to make this resource available so that local needs can be met.”

APOMA Chair, Peter Allen, said the partnership was important because it clearly strengthens the role of the APOMA committee in providing

good local direction and advice on how the community wants and needs to be managed.

“The appointment of a community manager will support this and assist APOMA to achieve and secure the long term sustainability of Andamooka,” Mr Allen said.

The Trust Chair, Bill McIntosh, said Andamooka, the biggest community in the Trust’s area, was experiencing unprecedented growth as a result of opportunities associated with the nearby Olympic Dam mine.

“The new APOMA/Trust partnership is a very positive outcome for the Andamooka Community,” Mr McIntosh said.

“I am confident that Andamooka will go on to become the clear leader as an example of good governance in outback towns.”

Fatal incident in Roby Downs A

he Government has given the green light to start construction of a brand new $10m police station at Roxby Downs.

Police Minister, Michael Wright, who was in Roxby Downs for a Cabinet meeting last week said the massive mine expansion would come with a huge increase in the population of Roxby Downs, both during the expanded mine’s construction phase and when it was fully operational.

“The Government and SAPOL have recognised that population growth will require greater police resources and services,” Mr Wright said.

“The project is being built to accommodate an extra 30 police of-

ficers and 2 additional administration staff and will ultimately ensure increased security and safety to communities in and around Roxby Downs.”

The Minister hopes the new facility will help with a significant impact in the reduction of crime rates, road fatalities and provide the public with an elevated sense of safety and security. Its features include: • Police accommodation; • Cell complex; • Forensic crime scene laboratory; • Criminal justice prosecutors accommodation; • Secure parking for patrol cars; • New training facilities; • Meal, locker room and shower

facilities. $4.4 million has also been allocated to meet housing, transport and location costs for the extra officers to be based at Roxby Downs.

“It is essential we continue to deliver new and upgraded infrastructure to facilitate growth and cater for the ever-increasing numbers of police serving the people of South Australia,” Mr Wright said.

“By providing the necessary resources, our police force will be better equipped to deliver effective and efficient services.”

Construction of the new Roxby Downs police station is due to begin later this year with an expected completion date of September 2010.

Roxby T preparing for major overhaul

2010 Relay For Life planning begins

he Relay For Life committee have been meeting to discuss the upcoming Relay for Life, to be held at the Roxby Downs Oval in October 2010.

The original date for the Relay was set for March 28 however as this clashed with the Adelaide Relay For Life and other community events, it had to be changed.

At the meeting the committee discussed several issues concerning this hugely successful fundraiser which included how they are to raise money for vital cancer research and how they can make it a bigger and better event than 2008.

Sadly, Steve and Helen Edwards, two of the driving forces behind last year’s Relay For Life, will be stepping down from the committee as they will be leaving Roxby Downs. Fortunately they leave a very eager and willing team behind, small though it may be.

As such, Steve’s position as Chair was vacated.

Nominations were held and Kate Pederson, who was on

The 2010 Relay For Life Committee. last year’s committee, accepted the position.

“This is wonderful news, as Kate comes to the position with much knowledge to share,” commented a committee member.

However, it was acknowledged by all that the role of Chair is too big for one person and Kate accepted the position on the basis that it was a shared role. The committee is therefore hunting for a Co-Chair and is keen to hear from anyone interested.

A change the committee is looking at is an “eternal flame” for the entirety of the event, acting much like the Olympic Flame in the centre of the oval.

This flame would be lit at the beginning of the event and distinguished at its conclusion.

Another suggestion was incorporating an Olympic style torch for cancer survivors to carry around the oval at the beginning of the event.

The next Relay for Life meeting will be held on Thursday June 4 at 7.30pm in the Council Office Board Room.

Skidding Mall cyclists irritate cleaners

oxby Downs residents could take a lot of comfort in the fact that BHP Billiton was determined to make it the top mining town in the country for the simple reason that it was needed by the company to attract the right sort of people to make the mine expansion work.

That is the view of Roxby Downs Council Administrator, Bill Boehm.

He was commenting to The Monitor about the release of the BHP Billiton Environmental Impact Statement which contains a raft of major changes to the town that will potentially double its size and improve the style of living for all of the residents.

“BHP Billiton needs the town and community to be of a sufficiently high standard to attract people with the right skills for the massive expansion of work,” Mr Boehm said.

“And the South Australian Government also wants Roxby Downs to work well in order to generate some $200 million a year in royalties as well as being a major provider of new jobs for the State.

“The company knows they have a world class deposit and they don’t want to miss out on the opportunity of converting it into a world class mine by not providing the best living standards so as to attract high quality staff and workers” Mr Boehm said it was

too early to comment on particular initiatives contained in the EIS because neither he nor the Council has had enough time to examine the detailed master plan for the town.

But the council would be making its own submission.

The Community Board would also be making its own submission and Mr Boehm said a range of community groups would be doing the same.

One of the mooted developments for the expanded Roxby Downs is a second supermarket which is located on EIS plans as the site of the current Community Club, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations and expansion.

Mr Boehm said both the area adjacent to the Club and the block around the existing Roxby Council office sites had been zoned Town Centre Retail Policy about 18 months ago.

While the BHP Billiton EIS could outline its wishes for the way it wanted town planning to proceed, it was ultimately up to the Government on account of its formal planning role.

Mr Boehm said additional retail for the town including a second supermarket for the town was a good idea because it would provide competition, with a bigger range of choice and hopefully more competitive prices.

“But any location of a new supermarket will be up to market forces,” Mr Boehm said.

The rules of the Roxby Central Shopping Mall are being ignored by bike riders and skaters who continue to vandalise the pavement

Roxby Central Liaison Officer, Alison Speirs, told The Monitor she was disappointed people blatantly ignore the rules.

“There are signs up saying no bikes and skateboards and such making people aware of the rules and they still ignore them,” she said.

Last week, someone skidded through the mall, leaving behind a mark that reached from Hourglass

Jewellers to Lunch On The Run. “You’re always going to get a few skids but when it’s like this, it looks terrible and it makes the cleaners’ jobs hard too.”

This particular skid mark will require a considerable amount of elbow grease to remove, a job the cleaners no doubt find irritating.

Mrs Speirs would like to offer her thanks to the people who do obey the rules and to the community members who stand up and tell those riding through the mall to get off their bikes.

“We just want people to obey the rules and keep the mall safe and clean.”

Living with Asperger Syndrome

B

eing the mother of a sixyear-old boy with Asperger Syndrome is no easy task and requires considerable support, which is why Roxby Downs local, Emily Francis can’t wait for Saturday’s ‘Meet the Winemaker’ event.

Emily’s son Blake was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder Asperger Syndrome - around the age of two and since then, Emily and her husband, not to mention Blake himself, have had a lot to deal with.

Emily spoke with The Monitor about her experiences living with a child with Asperger Syndrome in the hopes that people will become more aware of the situation.

“They call them little Einsteins,” said Emily, speaking about her son.

“He’s a very overly social child, so if he likes you he will come up to you and give you a hug, not knowing you well enough to actually give you a hug but he would anyway.

“He has obsessions and a photographic memory, which is very handy – I wish I had one just to be able to keep up with him,” she laughed.

Emily explains when Blake was originally diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, life was quite difficult, however over the years, Blake has learnt a lot and has “calmed down” considerably.

“We’ve done a lot of work with him, me and my husband, in teaching him.

“Originally we did have him alone, not hiding him away but it was a lot of hard work to go out.

ed taking him out and when he got into a situation he didn’t like, we taught him this isn’t how you react, this is how you do it, instead of getting angry and taking him home.”

During the first years of Blake’s diagnosis, Emily and her husband found it difficult raising him.

“It’s not the easiest thing to do but it’s very hard because Blake didn’t understand it either so we had to learn a lot but I’m a big reader and I don’t go into anything without information.

“As soon as the specialist said this is what we’re looking at, I was on the net and reading up on any information I could find.

“Although he wasn’t yet diagnosed, we started treating him as if he had Asperger Syndrome anyway and now he is two and a half years ahead because we started at day dot instead of denying it.”

Dealing with a situation such as this took tremendous effort and courage on Emily’s and her husband’s part and while they do their best, there is still a great deal of support they need, support that has slowly diminished over the years.

“Earlier on it was great but not so much now that Blake is in the education system,” said Emily.

Blake sees a paediatrician and speech therapist once a month however Emily would like to see those services, and more, available on a full time basis in Roxby Downs.

“These kids need speech and occupational therapists on hand because you can go for three days where they are really good and then you can have three days where they have a total meltdown and you run out of ideas and don’t know how to cope with them,” explains Emily.

“You need to ring someone and take them to see them and by the time we get an appointment each month to see somebody the crisis is all over and done with.

“I think it’s unfair; there should be a full time staff for that here.”

Of course, living in a small community does have its advantages, and Emily finds she receives more support on a personal level – not necessarily

professional - here than she would in a city.

“Everything is on hand in a big city but school wise he might be forgotten about, whereas here he stands out and they notice him and give him the help he needs.”

Help is desperately needed for Blake and for everyone living with Autism and Asperger Syndrome, not just from healthcare professionals but from the wider community, which needs to be educated about these disorders.

“It’s sort of pushed aside and these people are called weirdos but some of our great men like Albert Einstein were Autistic and they created everything, but unfortunately people don’t understand it,” said Emily.

“It’s hard to understand; I’m still learning things today and people need to be made aware of how to deal with these people.”

Emily recalls an instance where a lack of understanding led to her feeling upset.

“We were walking out of Woolies and a little girl said to her mum ‘that’s the naughty Blake’ and I was a bit teary because that’s not fair, he wasn’t a naughty boy, he just didn’t understand.

“That’s probably the hardest thing, the people who don’t understand. We used to get a lot of looks saying he just needs a smack on the bum but it’s not that he’s being naughty, he just doesn’t understand.”

It is all about understanding and the ‘Meet the Winemaker’ event will help to promote this understanding.

All funds raised will go to supporting Autism and Asperger Syndrome in Roxby Downs, purchasing materials to inform the public and to aid in the lives of those with the disorder.

“I think it’s a great idea because the money is staying in the community,” said Emily.

“And the winemaker is a great idea to do because we all drink, especially parents of Asperger children,” laughed Emily.

The ‘Meet the Winemaker’ event is on this Saturday at the Oasis at 7.30pm, so get your tickets, down a few glasses of wine, enjoy live entertainment and help support a much needed cause.

Blue Light disco proceeds to scouts T

he Roxby Downs Blue Light Committe e ha s donated $800 to the Roxby Downs Scout Troupe.

ank SA is planning to open a new branch in Roxby Downs.

The Roxby Downs branch is expected to open for business on July 13.

The announcement was part of the bank’s announcement of a 20 per cent lift in profit.

BankSA managing director, Rob Chapman, said despite constraints brought on by the downturn SA remained relatively well positioned to ride out the difficult times.

“With our solid industries, including mining and resources, defence, small business and agriculture, continuing to make significant contributions to our state’s overall economy, we can remain cautiously optimistic,’’ he said.

BankSA’s after-tax cash profit in the half year to March 31 was $103 million. Bank SA is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sydney-based St George Bank which is now part of Westpac.

Bank SA’s commercial lending was up by 15 per cent to $7 billion and home loans up 12 per cent to $9 billion.

Deposits also grew, rising 11 per cent to $7 billion.

“The single biggest contributor to the bank’s growth had been the lack of bad debt delinquencies and provisions,’’ Mr Chapman said.

Scout Group Leader, Scott Martin, accepting the cheque on behalf of the scouts, thanked the Blue Light Committee for their great work.

Mr Martin said the $800 would be used by the scouts to hold an event they are now planning to raise even more money for a national scout Jamboree next year.

Bushfire APPEAL

The Bushfires in Victoria set the community of Roxby Downs into action during the month of February and March to assist those people and their communities who lost everything in those devastating fires.

Roxby Downs has a population of 4,500 people from all over the world and Australia.

During such times of devastation like these fires it brought our community together.

Times like these puts life into perspective by placing human needs as priority over and above the economic downturn . Like-minded people gathered which started a fundraising frenzy with every community person contributing in some way.

It is now time to give thanks to those volunteers who assisted with getting the ball rolling.

The Monster Raffle was born and gathered together by the traders under the stewardship of Leigh Malcolm and tickets were on sale within a week. The prizes donated were absolutely amazing.

The Dune’s Café donated all takings from the Thursday coffee morning, then also ran a special movie night followed closely by the Community Event – The Family Fun Day in the Pool.

Rotary Club of Roxby Districts and its members assisted at the Barbecue along with VP Barry Mitchell of BHP Billiton, The prize of the town raffle Graham Warren and Maree Jackson (Roxby donated by local businesses.

The Monster Raffle was amazing, businesses and individuals were most generous and this group of people and their organisations ensured that the appeal would get off to a great staff.

Of course we also need to say thank BHP Billiton whom came on board with assistance at functions and also with prizes for the Monster Raffle and then of course their match giving program. Employees of BHPB who donated more than $2 and obtained (requested) a receipt from the Red Cross will be able to submit a Match Giving request to the company who in turn matches the employees donation $1 for $1.

Rural networks may hold key to men’s happiness MEETING DATES A

Students created paintings, drawings and pictures which they have sold to raise money for the underprivileged children living in Columbia.

As well as selling their pictures, the Student Voice Representatives of Saint Barbara’s has also created a mural to promote the initiative.

This mural is a ten piece educational puzzle depicting a Colombian scene.

“As a Catholic school, we like to have the children learn how children’s lives are all over the world,” said Student Voice Representative teacher Jemima Saunders.

The students have been learning about the history of Columbia to raise their awareness of other cultures and the suffering some people are forced to endure throughout their lives.

This is the first year the students of Saint Barbara’s have participated in World Kids Colouring Day and as Jemima says, if they are successful, the school will look at expanding it to an

annual event.

All proceeds raised will go to Save the Children to help develop learning programs for children, train teachers and provide adequate teaching and learning materials to aid underprivileged children around the world.

“Millions of children around the world suffer from the wars of adults.

Education is the key to change,” said Peter Falvey, CEO of Save the Children Australia.

“Today, 37 million children in conflict affected countries do not go to school.

“Rewrite the Future has enabled us to improve the quality of education for 5.7million children which includes getting 815,000 children back into school.

“We are working to give more children the chance to go to school, to make children’s schools safer, better places to learn, with better trained teachers.

“Our target is to provide better education for at least 8 million children by 2010.

Urgent action is needed to reach the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary education by 2015.”

new study at the University of Adelaide’s School of Psycholog y will investigate how important social support and community networks are for the happiness of rural men.

Honours student Stephanie Kutek is conducting research on the subjective well-being of rural men in South Australia.

She will examine the influences of social support and sense of community on the levels of satisfaction with life rural men experience.

“Rural men often have poorer health outcomes than both urban men and rural women.

The rates of suicide among rural men are of particular concern as these have been steadily increasing over the past 20 years,” said Ms Kutek.

“Social support and sense of community have been found to be protective of mental health in rural communities.

“However with the current challenges facing rural towns, including decreasing populations and economic difficulties, many local services and amenities in rural Australia are being disbanded in areas where local community organisa-

tions and sporting groups are already struggling to keep going.

“These changes have the potential to impact the health and well-being of rural residents.”

Ms Kutek is looking for men over the age of 18 and currently living in a rural area to participate in the survey.

Participants will be asked to complete a short survey which will take approximately 15 minutes.

The survey is available in either hard-copy or online.

“I hope that this study will provide further evidence showing that greater levels of social support and sense of community boost levels of well-being.

Hopefully, this will have an impact on the services available to rural men and, in turn, help rural men find more satisfaction with their lives,” said Ms Kutek.

All you need to know A Mother’s about INFERTILITY Day I

o understand Mother’s Day, what it really means and its true importance, you need to understand the importance of the person in your life called ‘Mother’.

Showing appreciation for your mother is the greatest gesture; a mother plays one of the most influential roles in your life.

Your mother is the one who nurtures you in her womb for nine months, guides you through infancy and turns the soft, helpless creature into you.

She is the one who protects you and supports you, feeling for you and caring for you always with a smile on her face. She prides herself watching you grow and provides you a shoulder to cry on whenever you need. She is every child’s best friend.

For a child Mother’s Day is a chance to show them how much you care about them and appreciate the job they are doing.

She should cherish the special feeling of this day and the intensity of that feeling should last her lifetime.

The essence of the meaning of Mother’s Day is in the fact that we should try and make this day every year a memorable one for your mother.

I know for me, my mother played the most important role in my childhood.

Raising five kids as a single parent could not have been an easy feat, but my mother did it, she worked during the week and devoted her time to the entire family on the weekend, and was there for us whenever we needed her.

I can’t remember a time when I thought she was sad, because she was always smiling, and she was doing it for us.

Looking back, I realise it would have been a difficult time for her trying to raise five very energetic and completely different children under the age of 10.

If it wasn’t for my mother, and her values and beliefs I would not have turned into the woman I am today.

A mother is a special person you cannot replace.

Mother’s day is a day to prove that all her efforts towards making us a complete person have been worthwhile and make her feel proud for us.

I never forget to stop along life and say thank-you to my mother for everything she did and didn’t do whilst I was growing up… for this I am a stronger person.

A mother is after all the person who teaches you to drive a car, the person who holds your hand when you are getting a needle, or opens your very first savings account with you, teaches you how to cook the dessert you like, or talks to you on the phone for hours on end just to make sure you are happy and healthy.

And when you grow up and have children of your own, your fantastic mother will become an even greater grandmother, the kind that would travel more than 2000km the same time every year so they don’t miss a single birthday.

To say “Happy Mother’s Day” means more than just telling someone to have a happy day, but instead within this phrase lies many things, you think and feel but never get a chance to say.

So never forget to remind your mother just how much she means to you! I won’t!

nfertility is a disease or condition of the reproductive system, often diagnosed after a couple has had one year of unprotected, well-timed intercourse or if the woman has suffered from multiple miscarriages.

Not only does a woman’s condition play a role in infertility, but male factors can exert influence as well. Infertility can be caused by many different factors.

Hormonal causes: A proper amount of hormones, such as progesterone and estrogen, is crucial to a woman who is trying to become pregnant. Progesterone prepares the uterine wall for implantation of the fertilized egg, while estrogen is responsible for the menstrual cycle, for the nutrition of a fertilized egg, and later, for the development of the fetus.

Medicinal causes: Medicinal causes include all disorders, failures or diseases; a miscarriage is also a medicinal cause and may influence infertility.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of cysts (fluid-filled sacs) on the ovaries associated with high male hormone levels. PCOS symptoms can in-

clude infertility.

Uterine Factors Abnormalities of the uterus can have a significant impact on the ability of a woman to conceive and to carry a pregnancy successfully to term.

Premature ovarian failure is defined as the loss of ovarian function at a young age (about 15 to 40) causing infertility.

Endometriosis is a disorder of the female reproductive system in which endometrial tissue (the normal lining of the uterus) is found outside the uterine cavity. So the lining can’t receive or nutritionally support a fertilized egg, and later, allow development of a fetus The term Poor Responder is used to define women who require large doses of stimulation medications, yet who produce only a small number of eggs. The availability of fewer eggs severely limits chances for fertilization.

Infertility Factors Infertility is a disease or condition that is preventable in most cases. Some infertility factors (e.g. age) cannot be influenced; however, unbalanced hormonal levels, for example, can be treated easily.

Information about how selected factors influence infertility follow below.

• Age. A woman’s age can affect

her fertility. The likelihood of successful pregnancy diminishes with increasing age, caused by fewer available eggs, and increasing risk of chromosomal abnormalities and miscarriages.

• Unprotected sex. Having multiple sex partners and not using condoms may increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that can cause infertility in men and women.

• Smoking. Smoking may increase the risk of infertility in women and may reduce sperm production in men.

• Unbalanced hormone levels.

A proper amount of hormones, is crucial to a woman who is trying to become pregnant.

• Being underweight. Body fat levels between 10 and 15 percent below normal can completely shut down the reproductive process.

Many of the risk factors for both male and female infertility are the same.

By Zak Zeptner Saturday is the Meet the Winemaker event and as a sample to the upcoming festivities, The Monitor spoke with the winemaker himself, Mr Thomas K Hardy.

Thomas is the fifth generation of his family to become involved in wine, joining the family business which was started in 1853

by Australia’s biggest wine producer, Thomas Hardy of Devon.

“It’s an honour (following Thomas Hardy) and I suppose in some ways it’s a bit of a cross to bear,” said Thomas.

“When I was growing up I didn’t really think about a career because it was sort of unspoken that I would kick on with the family business.”

Mr Hardy broke away from the family brand of wines in 2001, starting his own company, Thomas K Hardy Wines, and now produces exquisite wines for all occasions.

Having written several books about fines wines, Thomas certainly knows his craft and is thrilled to be coming to Roxby Downs.

“I am excited because I don’t suppose it’s somewhere you go unless there’s a special reason for going,” said Thomas.

“Years ago I was working for the family company and they used to have a light aircraft sales trip going north and that went through Coober Pedy, Tarcoola, Oodnadatta and Andamooka.

“The Hardy representative didn’t like flying so before the trip he would ask if anyone wanted to take his place and I’d always put my hand up.

“I’ve had experience in dealing with restauranters and hotel people and the locals

in those towns so I’m excited to be going up there.

“Roxby is certainly vital to this state’s future.”

Thomas’s wines are produced from grapes he receives mainly from his brothers’ vineyards and makes a collection of wines, some expensive, some not so much.

Thomas also makes special label wines, having created specific types for Jason Gillespie, Mark Davis and his mother’s 80th birthday.

“I like to support good causes woven into communities through wine,” said Thomas.

What better way to support the community than by hosting a glorious event of fine wine and entertainment and with all proceeds going towards supporting Autism and Asperger Syndrome in Roxby, the town is sure to benefit.

“I think this is a great cause to support because it doesn’t commonly draw much support and get publicity so I think it’s a good thing.”

Thomas explained this was a cause close to him as his cousin was diagnosed with Autism.

“I know the challenges it presents to families and it’s fairly close to home; it’s certainly a cause I know something about.”

For those wine enthusiasts out there, Thomas Hardy also runs a wine society and would love to find new members in Roxby Downs.

Thomas K Hardy will be in Roxby this Saturday at the Meet the Winemaker event at 7.30pm at the Oasis.

Zeppy’s Reviews TV Review: Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities

Less death, more breasts

S

eason One of Underbelly was an instant ders - some of the most horrific and brutal killings in Australian history success on Australian television.

The brutal, competitive and sexy 10 year gangland war between Carl Williams and the Carlton Crew continues in Season Two with a focus on the drug trade in Australia. However this time we go back to the seventies and eighties to witness the rise of drugs Down Under.

Season Two follows the lives of Sydney based drug lord, Terry “Mr Asia” Clark and his rise to power with Mafia connected Robert “Aussie Bob” Trimbole. However, as the title suggests, the series is not only about the Sydney based rise of crime but Melbourne’s as well, with focus on the Dockers and Painters Union and infamous hitman, Chris Flannery. While Terry Clark is the main character, the show also delves into the life of illegal casino owner George Freeman and his struggles in the criminal underworld.

The story of season two is simple: small time New Zealand dealer Terry Clark comes to Australia to develop a drug business with Aussie Bob and over a period of ten years, becomes one of the biggest drug lords in the world. Unlike season one, this series is not so much about a gangland war as about a business enterprise. Yes, there are mur-

– but this series is more about the internal struggle of running a narcotics empire.

During the show’s airing, the media has been filled will comments concerning the sexually explicit nature of the series, and in fact, every episode shows more body parts than drugs.

This is not a bad thing and, in my opinion, was done to keep the show interesting, as this season does not have as many murders as the original. The sex and nudity in the series is more of a compensation for the lack of killing; while season one executed at least one character every episode, season two consist of less death and more breast.

This season of Underbelly runs slower than the original and some episodes do come off as slightly boring.

However for those interested in the true story of Mr Asia, it is worth sitting through the lesser episodes.

The final episode, which aired last week, while bringing about a conclusion to the series, was somewhat anticlimactic when compared to season one’s end, with the main characters receiving a less ‘cinematic’ ending and more of a natural conclusion, instead of going out in a hale of gunfire.

The acting, of course, was tremendous. A collec-

tion of Aussie talent is displayed throughout the series, proving to the world Australian’s have what it takes to create real drama. Matthew Newton is excellent as the charismatic Terry Clark, performing superbly as a cold and calculating killer, while also bringing a human side to the character. Sadly, his New Zealand accent is not all that great, it’s more comical really, but you get over that quickly.

Roy Billing is great as Aussie Bob, playing the kind hearted Mafia entrepreneur but surprisingly scary organising the executions. Peter O’Brien stars as George Freeman and despite his ridiculous white curls, definitely seems like a criminal mastermind not to be messed with. The show is once again narrated by Blue Heelers veteran Caroline Craig but she does not appear in this series as her character is only 8 years old. Her mother, on the other hand, is one of the prominent police officers in the show, played wonderfully by Asher Keddie.

Underbelly is part of Australia’s history and definitely a series to watch. Season two

Book Review: The last Time They Met

he Last Time They Met chronicles three major encounters between poets Linda Fallon and Thomas Janes.

Author Anita Shreve tells their tale in reverse order, starting with their Toronto meeting.

At age 52, the two reflect on their separate lives, accomplishments and personal tragedies.

They rekindle their high-school romance in a foreign country, as twenty-six year-olds.

At seventeen, they emerge from opposite

backgrounds to become an unlikely couple.

Well-placed hints are given about the lovers’ past relationship, maintaining reader curiosity throughout the story.

By introducing readers to the story of Linda and Thomas in reverse, Shreve allows them to understand the characters and their separate personalities before showing them as they once were lovers.

The presentation of events could be at fault, by introducing Thomas and Linda in middle age, readers are unaware of their history.

However once the former lovers reunite and discuss their past, the story comes together.

Shreve opens her story with decades of memories between Thomas and

Linda of which readers are unaware.

To enjoy this novel, you must believe in the couple’s pre-established feelings for each other.

The Last Time They Met is truly a compelling novel, Shreve lets readers into the lives of Thomas and Linda as they examine their past and explore the present.

Analysing the story any further would simply ruin the experience. This is a book you’ll remember long after the final page is turned.

In fact, upon completion of the book, you will have the urge to immediately read it again. It’s definitely worth your time.

The Verdict: 9/10

heckout style plastic style bags will no longer be available in shops from last week when South Australia becomes the first State to ban them.

All retailers from large supermarkets to small takeaway food shops are subject to the ban and will cut waste to landfill, reduce litter on the streets and in waterways.

Dog registrations are for 12 months in the financial year calendar. (July 08 – June 09), NOT 12 month calendar year.

Please also ensure that all dogs over the age of three months are registered, failure to comply can again result in an $80.00 Expiation Notice being issued. Cheaper registration fees shall apply for proof of desexed, micro chipped or trained dogs.

WARNING: Dogs registered with another Council are NOT considered to be registered within our Council area. An Expiation Notice will be issued if not registered with us. Proof of registration with another council is required and only incurs a minimal transfer fee.

Miners overcome talented newcomers, Zodiac

The second half saw Miners 1 play consistent netball while errors and misunderstandings crept into the Zodiacs game. By half time Miners 1 had stretched their lead to eight and even injury to in-form Jacqui Sharp couldn’t stop their run.

By full-time Miners were victors with a final score that read 45 to 29.

Despite the loss, Zodiacs showed flashes of brilliance with speedy and clean play through the centre court at the hands of Neilson, Scott and Paull.

Combine this with the movement of Hay and Kiely in the ring and solid defence from Sims and Robertson, with court time and further experience playing as a team, this Zodiacs

In the late games, Miners 2 came up against Olympic Dam 1, Hornridge 2 played Hornridge 1 and Olympic Dam 3 played Andamooka.

Again Olympic Dam 1 had a solid game against Miners 2 with plenty of rotations and positional swaps which demonstrated the depth and versatility of their side. The final score line read 73 to 22. Olympic Dam 1 is yet to come up against another A1 side.

Utilising their final week to finalise team lists, the Hornridge 1 versus Hornridge 2 game saw many changes.

Hornridge 1 were missing several key senior players and called upon juniors Barrand and Rhodes to step up.

The final score line saw Hornridge 1 win, 54 to 26.

Andamooka were treated to their second indoor game in a row and saw them come up against Olympic Dam 3. The accuracy of the Kelly mother and daughter combination couldn’t stop an OD win 37 to 33.

Miners 1. The A2 competition is led by Olympic Dam 2 followed by Zodiacs, Hornidge 2 and Miners 2.

Miners Red sit on top of the B grade ladder followed by Olympic Dam 3, Hornridge 3, Miners White and the Andamooka Roos.

Next week games are played Saturday afternoon at 1.30pm. Olympic Dam 2 take on Olympic Dam 1 and Miners White play Hornridge 3 in the two early games. At 3pm Hornridge 1 play Miners 2, Miners Red play Olympic Dam 3 and Zodiacs take on Hornridge 2 in the stadium.

All players are reminded that full fees must be paid prior to paying a third game.

Devils devour Magpies O

lympic Dam Devils and Hornridge Magpies faced off on the footy field for the first time this year in what proved to be a thoroughly entertaining match.

After Hornridge’s massive win last fortnight the crowd was keen to see if they could take out last year’s premiership team. As the match got underway, however this was soon proved to be difficult.

It was strong playing from both teams, with impeccable displays of power.

The Pies seemed to know exactly where the ball was going to begin with, intercepting many of OD’s kicks, but sadly they could not get the ball to their end.

OD fumbled considerably in the first minutes of the match, unable to take hold of the ball for long and often sending it straight to Hornridge.

Despite this lack of control, OD managed to score the first point of the match and quickly followed up with another behind.

It was power in the ruck as both Shaun Freeth and Peter Rhodes flew high and with some excellent field work, OD scored the first goal of the match.

The Pies finally scored their first point at the conclusion of the first quarter but with OD taking another goal, they were falling behind considerably at 0-1 1 to 2-2 14.

The second quarter picked up with the determination of winning taking control.

Both teams still fumbled with the ball, not able to hold it for long but it was the powerful tackles that allowed OD to score basically uninterrupted.

The Pies finally scored their first goal of the match with a beautiful kick just inside the 50 metre line which was quickly followed by another goal.

Hornridge were desperate to take the lead but when the siren rang for half time the Pies trailed OD by more than half at 2-1 13 to 4-5 28.

The third quarter showed a fighting comeback for Hornridge as they scored another three goals, catching up to OD fast.

But the Devils were not conceding the lead so easily and kept in front at the conclusion of the third quarter at 6-6 42 to 5-4 34.

Hornridge fought hard in the fi-

nal quarter of the match, desperate to emerge victorious but the Devils would not hear of it.

Each score by the Pies was quickly countered by another from OD and while it was conceivable for Hornridge to win the game, the Devils quickly squashed those hopes, wining the match at 9-7 61 to 7-6 48.

Miners slaughter Saints

T

he second match of the day saw Roxby Districts take on the Coober Pedy Saints for their first game of the season.

The game was quickly underway with Roxby scoring the first goal with a marvellous display of speed and agility.

The Saints were looking strong at the beginning of the first quarter, knowing exactly where their players were to deliver the ball with accuracy.

But it was Roxby who quickly took control of the game, scoring goal after goal to desecrate Coober Pedy at 8-5 53 to no score at quarter time.

Coober Pedy began making it difficult for Roxby, scoring their first goal at the beginning of the second quarter.

The Saints were fighting back hard, displaying a stronger side on the field and while they fought hard to make up for lost ground, Roxby still managed to score another three goals, keeping them in the lead at 11-9 75 to 4-1 25.

The game was already over as the third quarter began with Roxby keeping the ball safely down their end of the field, giving their backline a long rest.
