Goals and ambitions In 1982 I fulfilled a personal ambition by climbing Ayers Rock, now called Uluru. I had read so much about the rock as a young boy but nothing quite prepared me for the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment when I finally arrived and climbed to the top.

It was obviously a small accomplishment in the scale of life but setting goals and ambitions for ourselves can be fun and ever so fulfilling.

I ended up living and working at the rock for over ten months and I loved every second of it. There was something very spiritual about the rock, especially The Olgas.

I ended up climbing the rock on many occasions but I never thought I’d witness the rare event of heaving continuous rain that caused widespread flooding around the rock that filtered back for around a kilometre.

It was an unbelievable experience!

Water cascaded off the rock like I never imagined and in some places the sound of the water pouring off the rock was deafening. In fact, so heavy and long lasting was the rain, that the base of the rock became surrounded by water that was near waist-height in some places.

It was a phenomenal experience I shall never forget and sadly most of my photographs were accidently destroyed about four years ago.

I also fulfilled further ambitions when I went to the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation in northern Queensland. I developed a real attraction for both places many years earlier and had goose bumps when I finally got to go with my family.

I write about fulfilling personal goals and ambitions because I’m about to fulfil another one. My sister and brother in law purchased their own plane late last year and are planning to fly to Roxby in early June.

My sister and I can’t wait to see each

other again but there is another reason for the visit. My brother in law and sister want to see parts of the outback by plane and now that Lake Eyre is nearly full, both want to fly over it.

But whilst they are with us, my brother in law plans to fly me over the lake which is something I have always wanted to do.

I’ve been to Lake Eyre, I’ve walked on Lake Eyre and I’ve read lots about Lake Eyre, (especially the migration of over 60 species of waterbirds when the lake is full) but I’ve always wanted to see the lake by air when it is full.

Lake Eyre is an extensive salt lake that covers a massive area of 9,690 square kilometres and has apparently only filled to capacity three times in the past 150 years. It is the largest salt lake in the world and when it is full it becomes the largest lake in Australia.

I envy anyone who monitors the wildlife at Lake Eyre when it is full or near full because that’s when the lake becomes brimming with water and life.

The water from January’s monsoonal rains in Queensland that led to such HUGE floods continues to track its way south to the giant salt pan and although the lake is not quite full, I can’t wait to see it by air.

I love Lake Eyre. Its mystery and beauty is one of the great wonders of the outback. To stand on its brilliant white salt crust pan that stretches as far as your eye can see is a mind blowing experience.

To fly over Lake Eyre now that it is almost full of water will be another life-long ambition fulfilled...my next is to travel around Italy and I can’t wait.

In fact I can taste the wonderful food and coffee now.

Set yourself some goals and ambitions and do what you can to fulfil them, it’s worth every second of it.

itchens continue to be the most likely place for a house fire to start, with one in three of us admitting to leaving cooking unattended.

Recent figures released by SGIC home claims reveal over the past five years show around one third of South Australian house fires start in the kitchen.

SGIC State Manager Lee Jameson said a recent household survey revealed under-25s and renters were more likely to leave cooking unattended.

“It’s a concern that people are either unaware of the risks of leaving cooking unattended or are getting distracted and forgetting about what’s on the stove or in the oven,” Ms Jameson said.

The figures estimate there are more than 16 fires a month started in South Australian kitchens.

RDAS learns Spanish Police talk

5 Roxby Downs Area School staff members have formed the largest group in the state to join the Learning Languages Together Program where they will learn how to speak Spanish.

Department of Education and Child Services European Languages Curriculum Manager, Antonella Chiera-Macchia, and Preschool Bilingual Program Manager, Bernarda Sanchez, accompanied by Spanish Government Advisor, Caty Manrique, were in Roxby last week to congratulate the RDAS on its response to the program.

“I received a call from the Open Access College saying there were 25 people interested in learning Spanish at Roxby and I started to investigate and thought this is fantastic,” said Antonella.

“There’s lots of scope and potential here and we’re hugely interested in promoting the language and working with the community to assist in whatever way we can.”

Previous to this, however, Bernarda visited Roxby Downs and met with Spanish speaking natives to talk about the education system.

“One of the things the parents were saying at the time was that they wanted to work with the school and with the teachers, to see what was happening with their children and to see how they can support the children and the teachers,” said Bernarda.

“So with that information I believe the principals Kath and Helen decided okay, if we are going to learn a language it looks like Spanish may be the language to go for.

“There are a lot of Spanish speaking people in the community that are offering their time and expertise and the beauty of this is how well the school has responded to what the parents were saying.”

The staff of RDAS are certainly thrilled to be a part of a program that will enrich them culturally, as Deputy Principal Helen Bennie explains.

“Over half our staff have indicated they want to be involved and everybody is keen and enthusiastic,” she said.

Currently, only the staff are involved in the program however there is potential for it to expand to students and community members.

“This type of program lends itself to many possibilities,” said Antonella.

“One model would be that the teacher would become comfortable enough to start using the language in class and start teaching the students.”

The program also has the potential for locals who speak Spanish to offer their assistance to the school.

“Spanish speakers could come in as assistants and basically mentor the teachers to a degree and that would work in reverse as well in the fact the teacher could mentor the Spanish speakers if they were interested in gaining teacher certification,” said Antonella.

“The school could also ideally go down the pathway of employing a Spanish teacher for the students.”

Spanish Government Advisor, Caty Manrique also added it is very important to bring opportunities such as the Learning Languages Together Program to country schools.

“I think it’s very important to bring opportunities to the country and not only have them centred in the city,” she said.

“I think children from the country deserve to have these opportunities because sometimes we neglect these children, thinking what are kids in the middle of nowhere going to do with Spanish but it will open them to experiencing a new culture.

“It’s not only learning a language, it’s opening their minds to the world and this is very important.

“You cannot deny a child this right just because they are in the outback.”

This is a sentiment echoed by many, including the students, as Bernarda explains.

“We were having a meeting and one of the teachers here was saying she was approached by a student for the first time who asked why they don’t learn a language at the school and I asked the teacher why she thought this happened.

“She said in the past the school has had students from other countries come in but not to the number they are now so the children hear the other languages spoken by other students.

“The world has opened up and this is what Caty was saying, we cannot deny the right of this child and this is what the school is responding too.”

oxFM’s breakfast show, A Big Bowl of Muesli, has begun a Police Spot to inform the community about the law.

Every Monday morning at 8.30am, Detective Rod Ford and Senior Constable Peta Giles will join host Jack McGuire to present issues, stories and events of a legal aspect.

“It’s a forum to communicate with the community about what the police are doing and changes to the laws,” said Jack McGuire.

The segment calls for locals to send in their questions for the police to RoxFM where they will be forwarded to Detective Ford or Constable Giles.

Jack advises the public that this is not a call in segment and all questions should be asked via the email abigbowlofmuesli@roxfm.com.au or by calling in prior to the show.

“It’s important for the community to know what is going on in town and who better to tell them than the police?” said Jack.

“The police have been very helpful with this segment and I just want to thank everyone at the Roxby Downs Police Station for their support.”

“Would the financial crisis ever have happened if more people were educated more about that state of money?” asked Chad.

“By sharing ideas and opinions we can help ourselves make sure we are better prepared for coming situations.

“I mean, do we all know what’s happening with the Murray River and do we all know what situation South Australian finances are in?

“These are the things we really need to start addressing and instead of only being around the media for the good times, we actually need leaders who are going to step up and say yes this is not a popular publicwinning thing to say but it needs to be done.

“I think most people would rather somebody make the hard decisions than just massage around the edges.”

Returning authority to those who once held it, such as teachers and the police, is an area Chad feels passionate about and would endeavour to change if he were elected.

“I remember growing up, if I had been cheeky with the local police officer he wouldn’t have given two thoughts about giving you a clip behind the ear.

“One time I was doing something near him and he said if he every saw me do that again he would take me ten kilometres out of town and make me walk back.

“Back then they had the power to do that but today you can imagine what would happen if they tried

that.”

Chad added this was very much the same with teachers: their authority to be stern for the sake of the children is gone.

“There’s a boundary between protecting the students and protecting the teachers but I think we need to give these people back the authority they once had.”

Remote hospitals are also an area of concern for Chad, who promises under a Liberal Government no hospital will go backwards in regional areas.

“We are looking at making sure every town keeps its medical centres and improves them.”

When asked how Chad would going about achieving his goals were he elected, his answer was simple.

“I don’t step backwards when I’m trying to get my stuff done.

“I’d like to promise you that the day I’m in suddenly all the changes are going to happen but the reality is it’s going to be slow.

“Governments are governments unfortunately no matter who is in but we need to make sure we get a team in there that are focused on achieving these goals and not just window dressing.”

As the campaign begins, Chad will remain based in Roxby Downs, hoping to open a Liberal office in town to establish a base for his campaign and even if he is unsuccessful in the upcoming election, Chad says he is in it for the long haul.

“To win a seat from someone who is already in and very popular will be a massive ask so I’m not looking at it as this is the only election, I’m already looking at the next one.”

New trucks for CFS

T

he Andamooka CFS has been provided with a brand new fire truck to help support theirs and surrounding communities.

The truck has been long sought by the CFS and was finally delivered when the South Australian Cabinet visited the community last fortnight.

The truck will be on standby 24/7 and could be utilised as far as the Flinders Ranges if needed.

“We’ve been pushing for years that the community needs a new truck and it’s terrific for the community,” said CFS Communications Officer, Max Thomson.

In addition to this new truck, a Road Crash Rescue vehicle has also been provided to the CFS. The vehicle will make road side rescues considerably easier as all equipment is stored onboard instead of needing trailers to transport the gear.

Andamooka considers EIS

APOMA are preparing to conduct tests on the water tanks in Andamooka to measure dust particles in the water.

These tests are being undertaken to determine the effects of dust from Roxby Downs contaminating the water supply, which could become a serious problem with the expansion of Olympic Dam. “Water here goes from a person’s roof to their gutter to their tanks and then into their gut and mixes with all the stuff in the roofs,” said APOMA Chairman Peter Allen.

The results are expected to help form part of Andamooka’s response to the EIS. A consultant from the Birchman Group, Jim Scollon, is currently visiting Andamooka to help the town provide a response to BHP Billiton’s newly released Environment Impact Statement.

Town meetings are being held today to give the community an opportunity to comment on the EIS and aid Mr Scollon with his response.

He will be revisiting Andamooka again further into the consultation period of the EIS.

Volunteers honoured

rontier Services hosted a barbeque for the volunteers of Andamooka last week in appreciation for all the work they have done for the community.

Each year, in conjunction with Volunteer’s Week, the Frontier Services hold a luncheon to recognise those who lend a helping hand.

This year, however, it was decided that all volunteer services in the town should combine and honour their helpers together.

“This has allowed us to encourage a bigger group for the event and everyone pitches in,” said Peter McCready of Frontier Services.

“This is just something we can do to give back to the volunteers and thank them for all they have done.”

Peter thanked the Andamooka CFS for allowing them to use the venue and to everyone who helped out on the day.

“It is important for us to recognise the volunteers who give up their time to travel around and help people and without them, we wouldn’t be what we are today,” said Peter.

ver the years, the Roxby Downs Kindergarten has been upgrading its outdoor play area to provide a fun and engaging environment for the children.

One of the main features of the outdoor area is a ship made completely out of recycled plastic.

“We wanted something multipurpose for the children so we came up with the idea of a ship,” said Kindergarten Director Naomi

Watkins.

“It’s shaped like a ship and has a wheel and plank but the back is also open for the kids to sit and read or have their fruit or play dress ups.”

The ship was designed and constructed by Outback Landscaping Supplies at cost price, making it a terrific addition to the yard.

All children at the Kindergarten can enjoy this ship for a range of purposes and it even has a ramp for children with disabilities.

“It was no mean feat and quite a complex design and we’ve had people from other Kindergartens come

Budget Leaves Biggest Deficit in Australia’s History Rowan Ramsay MP - Member for Grey

“The biggest deficit in Australia’s history, a million unemployed and government debt to break $220bn is the legacy of the Rudd Government’s second budget,” said Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey.

“Labor has lost control of the economy of Australia and our children will pay the price.

“By the end of 2012/2013 borrowings will stand at $220bn or $11,000 for every man, woman and child in Australia. By then, even at a very conservative 4.5 percent interest rate we will be paying $10bn a year in interest. That will be ten billion dollars every year that cannot be spent on roads, hospitals and education.

“Even worse, the Treasurer conceded on budget night that he expects government debt to approach $300bn. He has no real plan to pay back the debt.

“I believe forecasts of a 4.5percent growth rate, including six successive years of above trend economic growth is totally unrealistic.

“Mr Rudd seeks to blame all of his broken electoral commitments on the global financial crisis, but the $124m of new government spending he has embarked on since the election means he must take responsibility for at least two thirds of the debt.

“While the government has increased spending at an unprecedented rate, it has selectively targeted some areas to miss out with a special focus on regional Australia.

“The budget announces support for regional students with the establishment of a Relocation Subsidy, however with slight of hand, the government simultaneously is changing the Independence Test for Youth Allowance, which when viewed as a total, means a reduction in the pool of funding country students can access of $700m.

“This will effectively spell the end of a gap year, where potential students through hard work have been able to earn sufficient to qualify as independent for the purpose of Youth Allowance.

A Budget of broken dreams Family First Senator Fielding The Rudd government has delivered to the Australian people a Budget that is horrific because it is a Budget that destroys dreams, Family First Leader, Senator Steve Fielding said today.

“This Budget of Broken Dreams is a Budget that sends a loud and clear message to Australians that they are better off not having a dream for themselves or their families,” Senator Fielding said.

“However, tucked away in this Budget is a little gift for the Prime Minister.

A boost to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet of $13 million and an injection of 60 staff.

“At a time when Australians are told to cut back and make do, this excess by the Prime Minister is obscene.

“This Budget destroys the simple dreams of ordinary Australians: • of owning a home • of having a family • of a secure retirement • of a fair go for small business “This is a Budget that shatters the dream of a family for many by squeezing funding for IVF treatment. This Budget at its heart is a tax on mothers because 11,000 babies are born on IVF every year.

“This is a Budget that punishes Australians who want to improve their lot in life.

This is a Budget that punishes incentive. It’s a Budget that takes the opposite view of the Australian ethos that if you work hard to build a good life for yourself and your family, you’ll reap your rewards.

“I understand that times are tough but in delivering this tough message, the Rudd government has also delivered a Budget that offers no hope, no incentive and crushes the simple dreams of many Australians to own a home and have a family.

The EIS has finally been released and all of the proposed elements of the plan are now on display and open to scrutiny.

The Monitor will gather information and insights on these areas and bring them to you over the coming weeks.

One area I did not have to spend too much time on was the Roxby Downs Master Plan released originally 18 months ago by the Government when they undertook a Planning Amendment Review of Roxby’s CBD. In my opinion the proposed retail plan has a major flaw.

In the Roxby Downs Master Plan there is a suggested second supermarket and specialty shops on the land which currently houses the Roxby Downs Community Club and the Roxby Downs Bowling and RSL Club.

This effectively places a 500 to 600 metre gap between Norman Place west (the end of the current retail sector) and the proposed new supermarket and specialty shops.

It doesn’t seem like much but history will show that when you split the shopping areas in small towns you finish up with one centre being weaker than the other.

The most sensible place for an extra supermarket starts with closing Norman Place West and knocking down the Police station and the Council offices and joining the new retail sector onto the existing retail centre.

I appreciate that the Poliice, who are moving to new premises on Olympic Way in any case, and Council buildings are substantial buildings and that demolishing the current buildings and

building new premises for the council is a more costly option.

For me this raises the question “are we working to a 100 year plan”.

We know the mine is expected to have a life of 70 – 100 years.

So let’s be sure we get it right the first time.

With retention such a huge issue for businesses and the community we need to get the mix, quality and accessibility to commercial and community services and facilities right.

If it’s a little more costly initially but it is a better outcome for residents and negates the need for major costly changes to fix earlier poor decisions it will pay for itself in the longer term.

There is a lot more to this debate, not forgetting that the Club and the Bowling Club do not want to move, what is the best retail mix for an expanded centre; is it best to have two smaller supermarkets or one super supermarket?

This is only one issue/opportunity; there are many we can debate within the EIS. My point is lets be mindful that we are planning for a 70 to 100 year.

If we don’t get it right now it will be hard to change in the future.

BHP Billiton and the Government are giving us every opportunity to have an input whether it be to criticise, question or praise all aspects of the plans proposed in the EIS make sure you take them up on their offer.

Letters to the Editor To the Editor, Thank you for your recent article entitled “Diabetes: prevention is better than cure”, which raises awareness about the importance of healthy eating. Unfortunately, the article also reinforced a common yet very distressing misconception – diabetes is not always caused by poor diet and lack of exercise.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which occurs when the body mistakenly attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Around 95% of children with diabetes have type 1. The cause of type 1 diabetes is not fully understood but scientists think that a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors trigger the disease.

Healthy eating and exercise helps people with type 1 diabetes to stay fit but has no influence at all on the autoimmune process that stops them producing their own insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong disease, and children and adults with diabetes need up to 6 insulin injections or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump every day, as well as multiple finger prick blood sugar tests, just to stay alive. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 cannot be prevented or treated with improved diet and lifestyle.

Recent government figures from the show that the incidence of type 1 diabetes continues to increase, which means that we need to invest more in research to prevent new cases and ultimately deliver a cure for the 140,000 Australians affected by this disease.

Only research by organisations like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will uncover why Australia’s rate of type 1 diabetes is one of the highest in the world.

The only hope for the thousands of families affected by type 1 diabetes is a cure.

The evening was a great night out for locals who got to taste wines from the cellars of Thomas Hardy, poured personally by the winemaker himself.

Mr Hardy of the famous Hardy Wine family is a wine author and renowned wine maker. A variety of wines over a range of prices were on offer for tasting and purchasing.

The crowd was entertained by musician Steven King who provided excellent music adding to the feel and enjoyment of the evening.

A continuous supply of delicious finger foods came from the Oasis kitchen and later in the evening event organiser Jack McGuire put on his DJ hat and drew the patrons onto the dance floor.

Worlds collide for Come Out

Students of Saint Barbara’s Parish School and Roxby Downs Area School are combining for the 2009 Come Out parade on Wednesday May 27.

Come Out is one of the largest and longest standing regional festival for young people and engages them in high quality, professional, interactive arts experiences presented in education and professional arts venues across South Australia.

The Monitor spoke with Saint Barbara’s Year Three Green class about what they have planned for the Come Out parade.

Teacher Lisa Phillips said the class will be creating and wearing rockets.

“We’re reading a story to the kids and they will base their rockets from that,” said Lisa.

The story, Yikes! In Seven Wild Adventures Who Would You Be?, was selected for its imaginative body, colours and the fact the story takes you on journey through creativity.

In addition to Saint Barbara’s Parish School, The Monitor spoke with Roxby Downs Area School who revealed they were combining the older classes with the younger

Some students will be creating space costumes, others will represent clichéd high school cliques and the difference between black and white and colour to name a few.

“Come Out celebrates the idea that art belongs to and is owned by children and young people,” said Come Out Artistic Director, Jason

“The distinction of this ownership is not defined by whether they make it or view it up close or from far away; across the breadth of the state...Come Out is a multi arts festival which does not sit still in one place but responds to the idea that art can exist at anytime and in any place...”

Those who volunteer for the day will be helping to raise funds for the Red Sands Branch of the Cancer Council, have a fun day with dinner provided and have exclusive access to a ladies only event.

Spots for the caddies from 2008 have been reserved in the hopes that they enjoyed last year’s event and want to join in again.

“I am already hearing whispers among the 20 teams of ladies booked in already about how many caddies they plan on bidding for and one team would like three so we need a few more than last year to satisfy demand and to raise money for a good cause,” said Kate Hobbs.

“All you need is the ability to walk seven holes of golf while pushing a golf cart, a sense of humour and some patience.

“Last year was a fantastic day, much of it down to the support and enthusiasm of the caddies and we’d like to make 2009 twice as good, so don’t be shy.”

OLYMPIC DAM EXPANSION A CLOSER LOOK

Over the coming weeks The Monitor will take a closer look at sections of the Olympic Dam Expansion Draft EIS and report the findings through this column The segments will focus on elements that will impact on the communities of Roxby Downs, Woomera and Andamooka.

This week we look at transport between Port Augusta and Roxby Downs.

Road, rail, overpasses, passing bays and delays

T

he existing operation requires about one million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of supplies and product to be transported primarily by road to and from Olympic Dam of mainly copper cathodes, sulphur, diesel and various reagents used in the metallurgical plant.

The proposed expansion would increase transport volumes by four times to about 4.8 Mtpa creating a major logistical exercise which impacts on all road users.

The materials handling and transport method chosen for the expansion would maximise the bulk transport of materials by rail with some transport to continue by road.

New and upgraded infrastructure will be required to deliver this transport solution .

The Stuart Highway between Port Augusta and Pimba, and Olympic Way between Pimba and Olympic Dam, would be used to carry oversized loads that could not be carried by rail.

traffic management measures in Roxby Downs And the relocating of the Borefield Road.

The transportation of material to and from Olympic Dam during the construction period represents a major logistical exercise with an increased number of heavy trucks and over-dimensional loads which will inconvenience road users.

As result BHP Billiton proposes to install a rail spur from Pimba to Olympic Dam and an intermodal road/ rail freight facility at Pimba which would significantly reduce transport impacts.

In addition, BHP Billiton would implement other measures such as specific traffic management plans, 15 passing bays between Port Augusta and Olympic Dam and traffic control measures in Roxby Downs.

However delays could be as much as 45 minutes could be experienced on some occasions when the largest components or vehicles are transported to Olympic Dam. Rail would be the primary mode for transporting goods and products to and from Olympic Dam.

Two suitably skilled people are being sought to serve on the Board. Board members are appointed by the Governor on the nomination of the Minister for Environment and Conservation and the position is remunerated.

Members should be willing to provide an average of three to four days per month for their service on the Board. The successful applicants will be appointed for terms ending in April 2011.

The State Government's policies with regard to gender balance, cultural diversity and representation of indigenous Australians will be adhered to in the selection process.

Over the first seven years these loads would be: • up to 5.5 m wide – on average twice a day • police escorted loads up to 8 m wide – on average every four to five days • loads greater than 8 m wide – on average once every three to four days.

Most over-dimensional loads (94%) would be less than 8 m wide and therefore could be managed within existing government policies and guidelines.

Some over-dimensional loads (about two per week) would be wider than 8 m, and require special attention as vehicles would not be able to pass these loads in either direction of travel.

To ensure the safety of this arrangement and to minimise delays and inconvenience to other road users, where practicable, these loads would not be moved in peak traffic times.

Upgrades would also be needed within and around Roxby Downs because the construction and operation of the expansion would change the volumes and types of road traffic using the local road network: The upgrades within Roxby would include road extensions, new distributors, improved intersections and

A 105 km rail line would-be built to link Olympic Dam to the existing interstate rail line near Pimba.

An average of three train movements is expected each day between Port Adelaide and Olympic Dam, and one train per day would transport concentrate to the Port of Darwin.

An overpass would be built 15 km north of Woomera to separate road and rail traffic.

Once the rail line was operational the bulk of materials (which would include concentrate, sulphur and diesel) would be transported by rail, providing a significant and ongoing reduction in road traffic for the operation.

BHP Billiton would still need to transport some materials (such as oversized equipment) by road after the rail spur was built, but at much reduced volumes.

An intermodal facility would be constructed at Pimba to maximise the transport of materials by rail before the new rail spur was built.

Materials would be railed to the facility on the existing rail network and transferred to trucks for delivery to Olympic.

The o intermodal facility will be an extension of the site used for the 1997 expansion.

Women are doing it for themselves I was talking to a close friend the other day about my career, my lifestyle, the choices I have and would eventually make and how they might affect my life.

I started to think about how privileged I should feel to have these choices, when decades ago women did not have the opportunities we have today.

I am able to look back now and appreciate what women in generations before us managed to achieve, and how women today are still striving to be something better.

History is often written and viewed from a male perspective; women rarely get the chance to celebrate the influence and power of some of the greatest women of our time.

From thought-provoking writers and Hollywood screen legends, to rulers of great nations and legendary humanitarians, talented sportswomen and political figures such as Oprah Winfrey, J.K Rowling, Princess Diana, Barbara Walters, Margaret Thatcher, Cathy Freeman, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth II, Mother Theresa, Marilyn Monroe, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and Jane Austen.

These are some of the most inspirational

and important women throughout history, the world and Australia.

Women have left their mark on the world as we know it today, and have become successful in their chosen field.

But it has provoked the questions, what about the unsung heroes, what about the women who worked tirelessly for the right to vote, or the women who found solutions in medical research?

And look at the women who paved the way for education of women! Inspirational women should not be defined as having done something that changed the world, but should perhaps be defined for having done something great (full stop) no matter how big or small.

Women have been fighting for centuries to solve the issues commonly associated with women’s rights, which include, though are not limited to, the right to an opinion; to vote (universal suffrage); to hold public office; to work; to fair wages or equal pay; to own property; to education; to serve in the military or be conscripted; to enter into legal contracts; and to have marital, parental and religious rights.

Q: What does an anniversary and a toilet have in common?

Women and their supporters have campaigned and in some places continue to campaign for the same rights as modern men.

Women have now embraced a ‘man’s world’, working the same jobs, and living simular lifestyles …

Women are no longer afraid to be strong, independent, and successful, and many women today are getting their hands dirty in the employment world, or choosing career over family.

Long gone are the days when women only had the option to be a receptionist or a stay at home mum.

My own sister in-law took up a job mowing lawns, and many of my female friends even work in the mining industry; these are jobs I thought would always belong to men.

Women can now be their own inspiration; we no longer strive to be like men, instead women want to be better than men.

Women are doing it for themselves! Their destination – LIFE – SUCCESS!

Local schools look for partners

T

he National Bank (NAB) has formed a partnership with two not for profit organisations, The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), to form The Schools First Awards.

The scheme was introduced to local school representatives to explain how our local schools could be eligible.

Roxby’s local NAB branch hosted a workshop for the schools and interested community people to learn about the Awards and the workshop ideas for how they could benefit from the $15 million dollars to be committed to the project by NAB over the next three years.

All Roxby schools were represented with Karen Halliday travelling from Woomera and Nicky Prosser making the two and half hour trip to and from Maree.

The scheme encourages schools to form partnerships with other schools, community groups and businesses to share resources, access expertise and create exciting opportunities for student learning.

Schools can apply for awards at two levels: Impact Awards and Seed Awards.

Impact Awards aim to reward existing school partnerships which demonstrate improved benefits for students. There are 60 local Awards of $50,000 and 8 State Awards of $100.

Seed Awards are aimed at schools

who are in the process of either setting up a partnership or are at the early stages of a partnership with schools eligible for Awards of up to $25,000.

There is also a National Award of between $500,000 to $1,000,000 available.

Inspired by the workshop, several of our local schools are already looking a partnership projects.

Given the isolation factor that so often impacts on our schools and most particularly those in the smaller outback towns, these awards offer a real opportunity to establish partnerships between the outback schools and their communities that would otherwise could not be realised because of a lack of funding.

The Government’s commitment to continuing an amended FHOB for six months beyond the existing 30 June deadline and its further investment in infrastructure are moves that should stimulate activity in the building and construction industries, in turn supporting employment, improving housing supply and helping first homebuyers build their deposits.

In an economy that is relatively weak at the knees, moves to prop up Australia’s property market in a manner

that positively impacts jobs, consumer sentiment and housing are welcome.

National figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the FHOB has had a positive impact on the market.

ustralian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) housing finance figures for the March 2009 quarter revealed strong housing finance figures which show demand for mortgages across all major categories, especially for owner occupiers, first homebuyers and the construction of dwellings, continues to show solid growth.

Both sectors of the market have revealed solid improvement in growth since October 2008, with the value of loans for owner occupiers rising by a large 7.3%, the number of dwelling commitments for the construction of dwelling up by an impressive 13.9% and the number of first homebuyer commitments as a percentage of owner occupied commitments rising to a record 27.3%.

In fact, the number of first homebuyer commitments for the month, at 17,652, showed a 100% increase on the 8,818 who entered the mortgage market in August 2008.

The March data also showed a re-emergence in investor interest, which increased for the first time since December 2008.

The value of investor housing-fixed loans commitments increasing by 4.7%. A number of commentators hadn’t expected this to happen until later in the year.

CEO of Mortgage Choice, Australia’s largest independently-owned mortgage broker, Michael Russell said, “The March ABS figures can only be described as positive, demonstrating the resilience of our housing market at a time when the global economy is really feeling the burn of the financial crisis.”

“The strong growth we see in the results also demonstrates the positive effect of Federal and State Government stimulus and incentives, which have combined with other positive factors - very low interest rates, relatively steady housing prices, improved housing affordability and healthy population growth along with increasing rents and historically low rental vacancies rates - to create a ‘buyer’s market’”.

“The March figures – showing positive growth across all categories – are fantastic news for those with their eye on the economy and more specifically the housing market,” Mr Russell said.

ocal musicians Gaynor Renz and Vanessa James will be performing an afternoon of Jazz at the Roxby Tavern this weekend.

Between 12pm and 5pm on Sunday May 24, these local musicians will wow the audience with powerful vocals and moving music from the Saxophone.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” Gaynor told The Monitor.

People will remember Gaynor from the Relay For Life where she was one of the many performers playing to the crowd.

Gaynor was also the winner of last year’s Oktopal Fest Karaoke Idol contest and has just returned from playing at Hills Gap and at The Barracks in Port Augusta.

“I’m looking forward to doing something on a local level instead of having to travel out of town,” said Gaynor.

Vanessa, who will be providing vocals for many of the songs and has sung with

the likes of Jimmy Barnes, is of a similar mind to Gaynor.

“I’m really looking forward to the weekend,” she said.

“I’m a little nervous but once I get into it I’ll be okay.”

While Vanessa admits she is feeling the nerves, Gaynor confesses playing to a crowd does not faze her all that much.

“I think it’s harder playing one-on-one than for a big group,” she said.

These ladies will be performing a collection of songs, ranging from the works of Charlie Parker to Missy Higgins and throwing in a few of their own creations too.

Both Gaynor and Vanessa are close friends and perform fantastically together, certainly loving what they do.

“It is good fun playing with someone you get on with well,” said Gaynor.

You can see Gaynor and Vanessa performing this Sunday at the Tavern at 12pm.

Glenda is the founder of Restoration Ministries International, has hosted her own radio show and teaches all over the world.

Zeppy’s Review Book Review: Area 7

Non-stop adrenaline Matthew Reilly is the master of adventure when it comes to literature and he proves this once again with Area 7.

This is the second book in the Shane Schofield series about a United States Marine who seems to constantly find himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Captain Shane Schofield has been placed in one of the most dangerous and honourable positions a Marine could be given: The Presidential Detail.

In Area 7 the young Marine is part of a team who is ordered to escort the President of the United State of America on his visit to several restricted Air Force bases in the country, one of which being Area 7.

It is business as usual for Schofield and his Marines until they arrive at the base and are suddenly caught up in a game of cat and mouse as a rouge elite Air Force unit attempts to assassinate the President.

Caught off guard and vastly outnumbered, Schofield must protect the President from dying in order to save the US from a devastating arsenal of nuclear weapons set to detonate if the President’s heart stops.

The concept of this book seems outlandish however all of Reilly’s writings are backed by hours of research and facts.

The descriptions of weapons, locations and vehicles are quite accurate and with only small amounts of creative license, Reilly creates a world of pure action that has a basis in reality.

The heart will race as you are propelled through the pages of this non-stop adventure thrill ride.

The limits of the imagination are tested throughout this book and with the pace never slowing down, you will be gasping in anticipation at what happens next.

From renegade military personnel to deadly South African Assassins, from escaped cannibalistic murderers to man eating Komodo Dragons there is something for every adrenalin seeker in Area 7.

The writing style is done in a way that even the most illiterate could understand, filling the pages with simple yet detailed descriptions of events that act to pull the reader in and does not let go until the final page.

Matthew Reilly once said in an interview if character development gets in the way of the action, he cuts it completely.

This about sums up the novel.

If it’s deep character storylines and intricate emotional bonds you seek in a book, Area 7 is one you should avoid. If, however, it is action not hindered by characterisation then you are in luck.

While this is a sequel to the international best selling novel Ice Station, one does not need to have read it to be able to follow Area 7.

However, there are mentions of happenings from the first book and having read Ice Station will give you the advantage of back story.

Area 7 is fast paced, gripping and relentless in its action. For a book as fast as a movie and sometimes even more engaging, read Area 7.

OPAL ROAD LANDFILL OPENING HOURS The Opal Road Landfill is open from 1pm – 6pm, seven days a week. This is a FREE service.

Recycling can be taken to either the dump or BSH Waste Solutions on Gosse Street, or phone them on 8671 1154.

PARKING

Please familiarise yourself with parking restrictions around the school and obey the parking signs and restrictions e.g. the “drop off zone”.

These restrictions are specifically designed to improve the safety of pedestrians and minimise traffic congestion.

DOG REGISTRATION

Dog registrations are for 12 months in the financial year calendar. (July 08 – June 09), NOT 12 month calendar year.

Please also ensure that all dogs over the age of three months are registered, failure to comply can again result in an $80.00 Expiation Notice being issued. Cheaper registration fees shall apply for proof of desexed, micro chipped or trained dogs.

WARNING: Dogs registered with another Council are NOT considered to be registered within our Council area. An Expiation Notice will be issued if not registered with us. Proof of registration with another council is required and only incurs a minimal transfer fee.

SERVICE SA Service SA operates at the Council Office on Wednesday and Thursdays ONLY, between the hours of 9.00am and 4.30pm. Council provides Transport Services including Vehicle and Boat Registrations and Licensing Transactions. No learner written theory tests will commence after 4.00pm.

RECYCLING

The Opal Rd landfill does accept recycling or you can take it down to BSH in Gosse Street.

Plastic containers are to be cleaned and no lids are to be left on.

They accept paper, cardboard and plastics. It is appreciated if sorted.

Hornridge blitz Miners

T

he Hornridge A1 side is proving to be a slick and well oiled machine following their convincing win over Miners A2 side on Saturday.

Elson missing from their line up for the second week in a row seemed to have little impact on the efficiency and clean feeding into gaolers Cockshell and Kay at the hands of Harris and Elliott.

The Hornridge side remained unchanged for the first half and by the end of the first quarter Hornridge 1 were out to an 18 goal lead.

Changes made in the break to the Miners side did little to stop the momentum of the tall Hornridge defence of Moll, McEvoy and Bowley and the half time break saw the score stretched to 41 to 11. Miners again made positional changes in an attempt to slow the run of Hornridge but the second half continued where the first left off and Hornridge gained considerable percentage on the ladder with an 82 to 20 goal win.

In the other A1/A2 games of the week Olympic Dam 1 (O.D.1) took on their club counterpart Olympic Dam 2 and Zodiacs played Hornridge 3 in the stadium.

Olympic Dam 2 (O.D.2) got off to a solid start against the A1 side.

Errors in attack for O.D. 1 and the pressure of Edmonds and Page in

defence for O.D. 2 meant the usual well drilled, fast and flowing game of the A1 side was hindered. The score at quarter time read 12 to 7 in favour of O.D. 1 which is one of the smallest margins they have been kept to yet this season. Elliott shot well for O.D. 2 and combined well with Wedding however they still couldn’t stop O.D. 1 who came away victors 47 to 35.

Zodiacs second game in the competition saw them come up against Hornridge 2. The stadium was the backdrop and the quarter time break saw Hornridge 2 lead by five goals. As the game progressed so did the physical nature of the game and Nielson proved to be a steadier through the mid court for Zodiacs. Penglase played well for Hornridge in goals and by three quarter time Hornridge were out by eight. Going into the fourth, Zodiacs made many positional changes. Hobbs moved into Goal Defence and played a tight defensive game. This aided a Zodiacs run on in the last which saw them make somewhat of a comeback but they couldn’t quite get over the line and Hornridge 2 came out winners 51 to 47.

In the early B grade game Miners White played Hornridge 3.

Miners White were victors with a final score of 42 to 32.

The late B grade game saw Min-

ers Red play Olympic Dam 3 (O.D. 3). From the first whistle Miners Red were too strong for O.D. 3 and were winners with a final score 35 to 21.

Next week games are played on Friday night. In the early games Hornridge 1 play Olympic Dam 2 and Miners White play Olympic Dam 3. At 8pm Miners 2 play Zodiacs, Hornridge 2 take on Miners 1 and Miners Red and Andamooka compete in the stadium. Olympic Dam 1 and Hornridge 3 have the week off.

The games to watch this week will be Hornridge 1 versus Olympic Dam 2. With O.D 2 keeping their A1 side to their lowest score yet it will be interesting to see how they fare against the other in form A1 team of Hornridge.

This could give some indication of an outcome for next week when the OD and Hornridge A1 sides face off. The other game to watch this round will be the late game between Miners 2 and Zodiacs.

With Zodiacs looking to notch up their first win in the competition, this might just be the week they can do it.

Teams are reminded to ensure umpiring duties are covered.

Teams who do not provide umpires for their allocated times will be fined and lose two premiership points.

Slaughter on the footy field

I

t was a slaughter on the field for Andamooka as Roxby Districts claimed victory over the Roos by a devastating 154 points on Saturday’s game.

It was a tough start for both teams as the ball remained elusive from the players but after a collection of fumbling, Roxby finally took control to score the first goal of the match.

It was goal after goal for the Miners as the first quarter revealed the Roos were not putting up much of a fight.

Andamooka simply could not take control of the ball as the minutes passed, proving to be no match for the Miners’ accurate kicks and fast playing.

The Roos managed to score a single point for the first quarter but the teamwork from Roxby hindered any chance of scoring for goal.

The first quarter ended with Roxby taking a considerable lead with 8-4 52 to Andamooka’s 0-1 1.

The second quarter saw the Roos pick up their determination, going into the game with hard tackles and strong playing, but sadly they could not pass the Forward Line, hindered by Roxby’s powerful Back Line.

Roxby scored goal after goal throughout the quarter, decimating Andamooka’s Back Line and propelling their lead further and further.

The second quarter ended with Roxby in a 90 point lead at 14-7 91 to Andamooka’s still 0-1 1.

Half time provided the Roos with a chance to re-evaluate their game plan and as the third quarter commenced, Andamooka put on a serious display of power.

It was outlived however, as the Roos failed to take the ball further than Centre-Half Back.

One goal managed to slip past Roxby however it was not enough to beat the Miners’ four goals.

The third quarter ended with Roxby maintaining the lead by 112 points at 18-11 119 to Andamooka’s 1-1 7.

The game was over long before the final quarter began and the Roos knew it.

Managing only one more goal for the match, there was no chance for the

Roos to take the lead.

To add insult to injury, Andamooka’s Matthew Castle was stretchered off the field after receiving a concussion from a tackle by Roxby’s Steve Finney which resulted in Castle’s head colliding with Dan Reid.

Andamooka continued their fight to the end, losing 2-1 13 to Roxby’s 25-17 167.

Devils decimate Saints Game two of the day continued the trend of tremendous victory as Olympic Dam decimated Coober Pedy by 120 points.

The game began with a display of strength from both teams, as Coober Pedy were eager to reprise themselves from last week’s annihilation.

It was Olympic Dam who scored the first goal of the match, followed quickly by another straight out of the ruck.

The Saints put on the pressure as the first quarter continued but the Devils were determined not to falter.

The Saints managed to score a collection of points but were outmatched by Olympic Dam who kicked five goals throughout the quarter, giving them a lead by over half as the Saints snuck in two goals.

The first quarter ended in OD’s favour at 5-4 34 to Coober Pedy’s 2-3 15.

It was areal ping pong as the second quarter got underway, with the Saints putting up a fight for the Devils.

But it was Olympic Dam who wanted victory more and while Coober Pedy kept them on their toes, the Devils pushed through to score goal after goal.

The Saints managed a single goal in the second quarter, falling behind by over 30 points at 3-3 21 to OD’s 8-6 54 The third quarter saw a serious change in the match as Coober Pedy seemed to lose their determination and simply laid down for Olympic Dam to trample all over them.

Try as they might, the Saints could not seem to get the ball to their end, allowing the Devils to score goal after goal to increase their lead by over 70 points.

The third quarter ended with Olympic Dam at 15-13 103 to Coober Pedy’s 4-3 27.

There was no chance for the Saints as the final quarter commenced, with the Devils scoring uninterrupted, keeping the ball far away from Coober Pedy’s Forward Line.

The Saints were unable to score a single point in the fourth quarter, conceding defeat by 120 points at 4-3 27 to Olympic Dam’s 2121 147.
