DEAL OVER NEW AWA’S Written by Les Rochester
EXCLUSIVE
ore than 850 shift and trades workers at BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam operations have just been offered individual Australian Workplace Agreements (AWA’s) to sign.
to remain in force, without variation, until their nominal expiry dates unless they are terminated or replaced,” Mr Dalla Valle said. “This clear and unequivocal commitment from the ALP provides the company and its employees an opportunity to preserve the way we currently work — through direct relationships — for at least the next five years, regardless of which party wins the next Federal election.” This newspaper understands that for those who signed the AWA’s they can expect an increase in shift allowances up to $4,000 a year. Mr Dalla Valle said the company made the offer of a new and improved AWA to be sure that it preserved the way it works at Olympic Dam—where all employees have control of their safety and have the ability, and are motivated, to improve their part of the business. Some of the clauses in the AWA’s make for interesting reading. For example under section 5 covering Leave, the employee can elect to cash out up to two weeks annual leave per year of service for any accrual that the employee may have been credited over a 12 month period.
