$1,800,000 renovations opened at school

OFFICIAL OPENING...At Roxby Downs Area School and TAFE campus for the official opening of the facility’s $1,800,000 renovations, from left, TAFE campus manager Bob Harvey, school governing council representative Peter Wooldridge, State Member for Giles Lyn Breuer and Federal Member for Grey Barry Wakelin, with school captains Kane Honner, Mikaela Aldenhoven, Natasha Bilka, and principal Jim Michalanney.

ROXBY DOWNS…Local students at Roxby Downs Area School and TAFE will benefit from the almost $1,800,000 of improvements, officially opened by Federal Member for Grey Barry Wakelin last week. Mr Wakelin joined school captains in unveiling a plaque commemorating the refurbishments at a ceremony last Thursday. He described school and ‘a sound education’ as ‘the basis for our democracy’. “The facilities you have around you here are...not for me, not for the teachers, but for the students and the future,” he told guests and students at the official opening on Thursday, October 30. “Roxby Downs is a key to South Australia’s and Australia’s future...and it’s great to see Roxby’s educational facilities endeavouring to match the world-class quality of the mine.” The Federal and State Governments funded refurbishment of Roxby Downs Area School and the Spencer Instititute of TAFE campus to the tune of $1,792,000. The redevelopment began in January this year and concluded in August. Improvements include an extension of staffrooms, an upgraded administration and entrance area with new offices, a newly-built multi-purpose room for R-6 students and the addition of a Senior School complex. TAFE facilities have been extended and include upgraded welding bays. “Currently our school population fluctuates between 700 and 760 students from one year to the next,” RDAS principal Jim Michalanney said. “This large transient student population reflects directly upon the employment opportunities on offer at the Olympic Dam mine and process plant. “The formal opening of the redeveloped school and TAFE is the culmination of a lot of planning, hard work and good will over a five to six year period - the result being the wonderful facilities we now have on offer to our school community.”
