Upgraded centre to tell story of Woomera WOOMERA…Woomera Heritage Centre will receive a $220,000 face lift following a significant funding injection announced this week. Funding for the centre redevelopment has been sourced from local industry, businesses, the Australian Defence Service and the SA Tourism Commission. The redevelopment will see the current centre completely redesigned to display ‘the story of Woomera’ in a sequential display. Woomera Board chairman Stuart Knox welcomed the redevelopment as “the new face of tourism in Woomera”. “This has been a long time in the planning and it’s going to look very different to the way it looks now,” he said. “There will be a real story told as people walk through the entrance into the building, rather than a fragmented image of Woomera’s past.” Key features of the redevelopment will include a ‘tunnel’ entrance, audio visual and static displays of Woomera past and present, and a theatrical exhibit on the future of the of the township. “This will be the flagship for tourism in Woomera in the future. “At a time when our numbers are down something like this is really exciting for local people. “Now that we’ve received the commitment for the centre, it leads the community to focus on other areas to complement the changes, like upgraded signage.” Work is expected to begin on the centre in early 2004, to be completed in September next year. Mr Knox said the project’s construction will predominantly rely on local labour.
