Upgraded centre to tell story of Woomera WOOMERA…Woomera Heritage Centre will receive a $220,000 face lift following a significant funding injection announced this week.

Funding for the centre redevelopment has been sourced from local industry, businesses, the Australian Defence Service and the SA Tourism Commission.

The redevelopment will see the current centre completely redesigned to display ‘the story of Woomera’ in a sequential display.

Woomera Board chairman Stuart Knox welcomed the redevelopment as “the new face of tourism in Woomera”.

“This has been a long time in the planning and it’s going to look very different to the way it looks now,” he said.

“There will be a real story told as people walk through the entrance into the building, rather than a fragmented image of Woomera’s past.”

Key features of the redevelopment will include a ‘tunnel’ entrance, audio visual and static displays of Woomera past and present, and a theatrical exhibit on the future of the of the township.

“This will be the flagship for tourism in Woomera in the future.

“At a time when our numbers are down something like this is really exciting for local people.

“Now that we’ve received the commitment for the centre, it leads the community to focus on other areas to complement the changes, like upgraded signage.”

Work is expected to begin on the centre in early 2004, to be completed in September next year.

Mr Knox said the project’s construction will predominantly rely on local labour.

Dates set for first Outback Fringe ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs will host the first Outback Fringe Festival in March 2004.

The three-day festival will stretch from Friday, March 19, to the following Sunday and will kick off with the official opening of the ‘Future Art’ gallery showing.

Saturday will see the streets of Roxby Downs come alive with live music and entertainment.

In the late afternoon browse through the ‘Fringe Bazaar” where you can unearth an unusual bargain or unique gift.

The Fringe Bazaar will host a variety of stalls selling everything from international cuisine to arts and crafts.

The Festival will comprise live comedy, theatre, children’s performances and workshops, local entertainment and visual arts.

Drinkers are Roxby’s biggest safety problem Community board focus - alcohol in the community ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs is one of the safest towns in Australia, the Roxby Downs Community Board heard this month.

However, while crimes such as thefts, house break-ins and stolen cars are rare by comparison to the rest of the state, Roxby Downs outstrips many other SA communities when it comes to alcoholrelated crimes.

Roxby Downs police officer Sgt Richard Hobbs addressed the board, on Monday, November 6, which was investigating ‘alcohol in the community’.

He told board members that random breath testing in Roxby Downs has a 19 per cent ‘hit rate’ compared to the state average of five per cent.

“My officers can tell you a lot about the drinkers in this town – all assaults on police in the past year have been alcohol-related,” he said.

“In fact, 20 per cent of all assaults reported to us are alcohol-related.”

Community Health Nurse Kathy Wooldridge called for “change of attitude” as the best remedy to the township’s alcohol-related problems.

“The message we hear is that drinking is the way to socialise in Roxby – there’s no events that are alcohol free, not even family events.

“And it’s not just the adults who are

drinking, it’s kids as young as eight and nine.”

Mrs Wooldridge praised the police ‘PartyWise’ program which allows party hosts to register their events with police and designates a ‘responsible adult’ as a contact point.

Other local initiatives which were addressed include police surveillance scheme ‘Operation Roar’, local youth services and the regional Drug Action Team.

Roxby Downs’ only registered foster family was represented at the board meeting.

Gay Darling told the board that “over the years we have fostered dozens of kids as the aftermath of domestic violence and alcohol abuse”.

“People need to know that alcohol breaks up families and it causes grief – and the innocent ones who suffer are the kids.”

Local publicans threw their support behind a community education program to better inform drinkers of their responsibilities, and the laws which govern the sale and supply of alcohol.

However, Tavern manager Damien Jones also pointed out that light beer sales in Roxby Downs are significantly higher than sales in the Tavern’s parent business in Adelaide.

Alcohol stats a sobering sight Roxby Downs is a very safe place in which to live and bring up a family. Offences which affect the average person - theft, serious criminal trespass (break-ins), illegal use of motor vehicles - are way down on South Australian averages. A lot of this is due to our having almost full employment and one of the highest income levels in the State.

But with that has come other issues, the most obvious was alcohol consumption. When it comes to alcohol we fare badly.

Of the 301 offences reported for Roxby Downs since December 2002, over 20 per cent were directly attributed to alcohol. With a 73 per cent level of unknowns it can be expected that this problem is actually a lot higher. Of the 12 serious assaults reported, in every single incident alcohol was a contributing factor. 13 out of 16 minor assaults, five out of 10 property damages, the list goes on.

While only directly affecting small groups of our community, the unseen impact spreads a lot further. The cost to medical services, loss of work, a degree of community fear - all this works against the safe image of Roxby Downs.

Another scary alcohol-related statistic is our drink driving record. Roxby Downs Police have detected 49 drivers for Drink Driving offences so far in 2003 (nine in October). Our RBT detection rate is well over double the SA average.

However, even more worrying is the average reading of those drivers of 0.127 per cent, five drivers well over 0.2 per cent, only three between .05 per cent and the old .08 per cent limit.

There are other alcohol-related issues as well. A small number of our youth, some as young as 12, consume large amounts of alcohol on a regular basis. The financial impact on alreadystrained household budgets and debt levels. The under-reported family violence. The list goes on.

What impact will these have on our community in the years ahead? Sobering thoughts for us all.

There’s no other drug as deadly as alcohol. I’ve seen alcohol kill families, relationships, careers and lives - while everyone stood back and smiled, or better, topped up the victim’s glass.

While statistics tell us young women are quickly catching up in the binge-drinking statistics, for me, the big danger zone is still men.

Why are young boys still being introduced to the world of ‘real men’ at the end of a bar?

Why do so many of a young man’s milestones have to be spelled out in booze, brawls and bending over the porcelain altar in the wee hours?

The ‘work hard, party hard’ ethos is all very well - but it’s not a credo to live by - it’s a hell of a one to die by though. I’m 28 years old and I’ve seen a few people die from alcohol now. I’ll probably see a few more go the same way too.

Don’t fool yourself, alcohol’s a drug, and drinkers need to treat it with respect. I think of it the same way I think of cars - you’re expected to be grown up to do it, but how many of us actually are? There’s limits - how many of us stick to them? They’re not necessary - but it’s a social expectation that you drive. You can kill yourself in a Mazda 323 as easily as in a Ferrari if you go hard enough. And a lot of us just need to slow down!

So why is it, the same parents who chastise their children for speeding in the family car, are happy to crack them a beer after a big game?

Why not take your teenager down to sit in on the local Magistrates Court hearings on December 3. It’s an eye-opener. Of the 180 or so cases I sat through in September, more than three quarters were alcohol-related assaults and driving offences.

Remembrance Day, November 11, struck a chord ofr many residents this year following Australian troops’ involvement in recent international actions.

Remembrance Day was marked by residents all across the Far North Region in churches, schools and at RSL memorials.

ROXBY DOWNS…The Monitor – Your Community Newspaper farewelled one of its original staff members this month.

Mother of two Megan Flavel has lived in Roxby Downs since 1989 and saw the first Monitor hit local doorsteps in April this year.

“It has been a very challenging project and it’s come a long way,” she said. “I look forward to my subscription of The Monitor keeping me in touch with what’s happening in my home town.”

With the departure of Megan, however,The Monitor gains the skills of another long-time Roxby Downs local - Mandie Arnold.

Mandie, like husband Paul, attended school locally in the late 1980s and is now raising a family in town.

“I believe the paper is a positive thing for the community and, after living here for so long, I really wanted to get involved,” she said.

$97,000 information bay at Pimba PIMBA…Approval for a $97,500 tourist information bay and new toilets at Pimba was announced by the SA Tourism Commission this week.

The SATC, Roxby Downs Municipal Council, Woomera Heritage Board and BAE Systems will contribute almost $100,000 to the project.

“This new facility is all part of our strategy to draw tourists to the region – and the information bay is a key part of that strategy,” Tourism Product Development Officer Alex Barker said.

“It’s very important for Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera because it’s going to allow us to promote our region from the Stuart Highway, drawing tourists from the highway to follow other ring routes such as the Torrens Track “For local businesses it’s an opportunity to advertise their services, again making people aware of the services that the region provides.”

NEWS New restrictions during local fire danger season FAR NORTH REGION…Lighting a barbecue, burning off or enjoying a campfire comes with restrictions this fire season, with the beginning of the fire danger season this month.

During the fire danger season, which lasts until March 31, a permit is required before any burningoff or when a fire is lit on the ground.

Barbecues are allowed if they correspond to CFS requirements.

Other activities, such as welding, grinding or slashing do not need a permit but fire safety regulations must be adhered to.

But on a total fire ban day, a permit is required for any of the above activities.

Total fire ban days are publicised on the CFS Fire Bans Information Hotline – ph 1300 362 361.

With almost 400 changes to the Country Fire Service regulations this year, it pays to be up to date on what you can and cannot do during the fire danger season.

The Wildfire Survival and Regulations Guide is available from the Roxby Downs Council offices, visitor information centre or local service stations.

In Woomera, they are available from the Defence Support Centre in Woomera. Or download the information from the CFS website – www.cfs.org.au.

Vintage aircraft at Olympic Dam OLYMPIC DAM…Four vintage aircraft flew into Olympic Dam on Monday, November 9, as part of an epic adventure to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The ‘flying visit’ was a stopover on the ‘Bridge to Uluru Air Safari 2003’ which commemorates the 75th anniversary of

the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Fourteen aircraft enthusiasts flew their vintage airplanes from Sydney, over the Harbour Bridge on their way to arrive at Uluru, stopping along the way at Mildura, Broken Hill, Olympic Dam, Coober Pedy and Curtin Springs.

Mental health - a personal account Last month, The Monitor and Roxby Downs Community Health called on loca residents to publish their personal accounts of mental health in our community.

The story competition was part of an effort to bring mental health issues into the open.

“I think that it’s important we acknowledge that mental health issues touch on many people and many lives, throughout the community,” community health nurse Kathy Wooldridge said.

“We need to respect that these people have enabled us to see part of their lives and realise there are others feeling the same way and we need to be able to support them.

“As we can tell from these stories, the issues facing Roxby Downs are different to many areas, with the isolation from family and friends.

“The social structure of the town is not normal, people don’t have the full gamut of brothers and sisters, aunties, uncles and grandparents to fall back on.”

Each of the four winners of our Mental Health Week competition will receive a gift from Mrs Wooldridge.

All alone I sit at the kitchen table with only the ticking clock for company. My husband has gone out for the day. My nearest neighbour lives 30 kilometres away. The day stretches out endlessly before me.

As I begin to keep a diary of the things I do (however trivial) and take on new responsibilities, I feel happier about myself. I learn to enjoy the peace and quiet. I join a library, become a volunteer reader of books for the Blind Society and assistant treasurer on the local Gymkhana Committee.

My life has meaning again - I am no longer alone.

Depression and me There is no one else but you.

Nothing matters but getting through to day with the outside shell just hanging together whilst the inside is falling apart.

To be detached from all whom you love and who love you, trying to be but only projecting an image of who you are expected to be.

All alone and frightened to be inside your own head.

Frightened by the thoughts, frightened by the thoughts of how easy it would be just to get out of this head, just to bow out of this fight.

I want to crawl into the darkness and find peace.

That was depression for me.

Luckily I found the right person to talk to and through talking and medication, I can laugh, really laugh, it hits you suddenly I am laughing from the inside laughing, how wonderful.

These people, my family how I love them.

Is this me? I am not lost.

I am back!

Post Natal Depression She’s holding a baby. Her partner works long hours. Her family is distant. I ask “How are you?” She says“I’m fine”. Her eyes say “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I cry all the time”.

She says ‘I’m not getting much sleep. Her voice says “my partner doesn’t understand”.

She says ‘My baby cries’. She thinks “I’m a terrible mother, I feel so alone”.

I tell her about my friend who spoke to a doctor, nurse, counsellor, friend.

I told her it’s a medical problem, treatable, with or without medication.

Next time I see her, she is smiling. And so are her eyes.

The Juggler I went to the circus a while back and watched a man juggling pins and discs and flaming batons.He’d obviously grown up doing these tricks, been practicing all his life, had done it a million times, and still he dropped them.

I looked out around me at the hundreds of people in the stalls, watching, eyes glued to the juggler, everyone hoping he’d catch it this time.

And the harder he tried, the longer he tried, the worse it must have been, standing in that spotlight with what seemed like the whole world watching.

I wondered, as the crowd held its breath, how many of them were scared of dropping the ball.

Because there’s an epidemic sweeping through my life and I’m watching it take my friends, my family, and suck them under till they’re just bobbing heads trying to stay above the surface.

I knew, as a kid, that there was a piece missing in me, the bit that plugged me into my own emotions – instead, I was always distanced, observing people, even myself.

And as an adult I fell in love with a man who is pummelled and panicked by his emotions and it’s taken me a long time - watching him spiral up and up into an explosion – to stand up and shout “there’s something wrong and it’s not just you, you’re not alone, you didn’t fail, you just need help!”

The right counsellor made the difference for my husband – the wrong one sent me running out the door again.

But there’s a new strength in me now, because I’ve seen all those eople, juggling in the daily circus. And I don’t stay quiet anymore when I watch someone else struggling.

And that juggler – I saw him the next night. He had a different act with fewer balls in the air, and he didn’t miss a one.

FURTHER EDUCATION...Long-time child care workers Jutta Scholefield and Julie Greenfield have taken on a new role at Roxby Downs Kindergarten this term to further their studies in children’s education.

Students again, at kindergarten ROXBY DOWNS...Two familiar faces in Roxby Downs Child Care have taken on new roles to further their study in children’s education.

Long-time child care workers Jutta Scholefield and Julie Greenfield, despite their teaching roles, are in fact students again at Roxby Downs Kindergarten.

To achieve their Bachelors of Education, the pair are now required to complete a series of practical placements at Roxby Downs Kindergarten this term, and next year at Roxby Downs Area School.

“I think its essential for teachers to get first-hand experience in a practical environment - or they’re just not going to be very good teachers,” Mrs Scholefield said.

“I’ve enjoyed it immensely,” Mrs Greenfield said.

“After three years in child care I’ve got a good idea how things work, but I’ve learned a lot from the very professional staff here.”

The pair have each taken on additional study in an effort to gain academic recognition for their longterm experience in local child care.

Nominations are being sought from Woomera residents to join the Woomera Board.

Two positions are open for election in November, for a twoyear term of office which ends October 2005.

Applications may be obtained from the Woomera Board and must be returned to the Board before nominations close Monday, November 10, 2003.

There were no nominations for the October election, so a byelection has been called.

Any Woomera resident over the age of 18 years who has resided in Woomera for a continuous period of three months immedi-

ately preceding election day are eligible to be nominated.

Elections will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2003.

The functions of the Board are: ! To advise the Area Administrator on matters regarding the welfare of the people of Woomera, and any matter referred to the Board by him. ! To manage businesses, public utilities and amenities and conduct other activities as the Area Administrator may, from time to time, direct. ! To spend, for the benefit of the people of Woomera, money received by the Board from various sources.

NEWS Far North Region Police Report On November 10, 2003 an 18 year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for PCA as a result of an accident on August 25, 2003.

November 13, 2003, a bar fridge was reported stolen from Camp 3 in Roxby Downs.

As a result of information received, Police attended an address in Andamooka where the fridge was recovered.

A 26-year-old Andamooka man has been reported for receiving stolen property.

Enquiries are still continuing to locate the original thief who is known to Police.

November 14, 2003, Roxby Downs Police arrested a 24-year-old man, of Camperdown, Victoria, in Pimba for the theft of more than $2500 of property from passengers on the Indian Pacific.

The man was returned to Roxby Downs where he was remanded in custody and later taken to Port Augusta where he appeared in a bedside court later that day.

He has since been remanded in custody to appear in the Port Augusta Court.

A Holden Commodore Sedan was recently reported stolen from Camp 1 at Olympic Dam. The car was located on Sunday, November 16, 2003 near the Bypass Road, having been stripped of its wheels, stereo and other items.

A 60-year-old man of Queensland was reported for PCA having been stopped for RBT on November 15, 2003.

His alleged reading was 0.137% Also on November 15, 2003 in an unrelated incident, a purse was stolen from outside the Leisure Centre at about 3.30pm. Police are investigating the incident.

Police attended the Roxby Downs Area School on Saturday, November 15, 2003, following a report of 15 smashed or damaged windows.

The windows, estimated at about $3000 to repair, were smashed by paving bricks having been thrown through them.

Police require any information that the

public can provide on this incident.

A 31-year-old Roxby Downs man was arrested on November 16, 2003 for assaulting a family member and resisting arrest.

He has been bailed to appear in Roxby Downs Court on December 4, 2003.

Police attended an address in Hermit Street from which about $7500 of property was stolen sometime between Friday afternoon, November 14, 2003 and mid afternoon on Sunday, November 16, 2003.

The stolen items include two Engel fridges, a generator, jewellery and other items would have required a vehicle to transport them.

Police would like to hear from the public about persons or vehicles acting suspiciously at the eastern end of Hermit Street during these times.

On November 2, 2003, a 21-year-old man of Roxby Downs was reported for failing to maintain lights, failing to provide a Breath Analysis sample and for driving a motor vehicle that was unregistered and uninsured.

An 18-year old Roxby Downs woman was reported for driving a motor vehicle that was unregistered and uninsured on November, 1, 2003.

On the same day, in an unrelated incident, a 19-year-old man from Roxby Downs was reported for urinating in a public place.

On October 31, 2003, a 33-year-old woman of Roxby Downs was reported for driving a motor vehicle while being over the prescribed concentration of alcohol, stating a false name to police and driving unlicensed.

A 36-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for driving a motor vehicle while being over the prescribed concentration of alcohol, on October, 30.

Police received a report on October 27, 2003, in relation to the illegal use of a vehicle at Camp 1, Olympic Dam. The vehicle, a Hilux utility, has since been recovered.

On October 27, 2003, a 29-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported driving a motor vehicle while being over the prescribed concentration of alcohol and driving unlicensed.

A 34-year-old man from Olympic Dam was reported for the theft of tools on October 25, 2003.

Rabbit ‘Pie’ makes a visit to vet

Street numbers a safety issue ROXBY DOWNS...Roxby Downs residents are being called on to clearly number their homes to assist identification by local emergency services.

This issue was highlighted by one local resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, concerned at ambulance response times to a community title residence on a ‘nameless’ court in Roxby Downs.

An SA Ambulance Services spokesperson said the service had had some trouble identifying properties in the past, particularly unnamed streets or streets with inversed odd and even numbers.

While emergency 000 calls identify the residence from which the call originates, not all emergency service volunteers are completely familiar with local streets, SA Ambulance Service volunteer Dawn Kroemer said.

“It certainly makes it easier for us to find a home in an emergency if it is clearly marked,” she said.

“Numbers need to be visible night and day.”

Roxby Downs Municipal Council has responded to concerns by pointing out that house numbers are the responsibility of home-owners who, by law, are required to clearly number their residences.

“The importance of residents having recognisable street numbering to identify their property cannot be overstated,” council administrator Bill Boehm said. “Obviously it makes delivery of mail and goods much easier, not to mention being a guide for visitors. Importantly, it is an obvious aid to emergency services which, in an emergency, may need to locate a resident’s property quickly.

“However, it is not often understood but the responsibility for providing and displaying street numbers

so that they are visible rests entirely with the owner of the property.

“The Local Government Act dictates that Council can, if necessary, stipulate the form that the street number is displayed and if necessary enforce compliance.”

Roxby Downs CFS captain Helmut Pfeifer supported the call for residents to clearly number local homes, as did WMC Emergency Services station officer Mick Towler.

Mr Towler recently told The Monitor “there are a lot of areas through town where it’s difficult to identify the numbers of houses - some numbers run different directions, some just aren’t visible”.

“I know of towns where the numbers are painted onto the gutters and maybe that’s something council should consider locally,” he said.

“I’d recommend to residents that they clearly number their houses, it will definitely make the difference in the case of an emergency.”

“Whilea number of alternative schemes such as numbering light poles and painting street numbers on kerbs have been introduced elsewhere, these are essentially private enterprise and community-initiated schemes that often have some drawbacks with respect to ongoing maintenance costs and obscurity by parked cars,” Mr Boehm said.

“Ultimately, whether individually, or by a whole township scheme, costs for these schemes will need to be met by the property owner in some form.

But this will not alleviate the responsibility of the owner displaying their own street number in an appropriate form.”

Movies under the summer stars ROXBY DOWNS...There are few things as relaxing as stretching out in front of a good movie and a local group of film enthusiasts are offering local residents the opportunity to do just that underneath the starry summer skies.

When Roxby Downs residents Mary Carmody and Amanda Fordham began reminiscing about their favourite outdoor film festivals, the idea struck them both as perfect for the region’s balmy summer evenings.

The idea grew, and came to fruition last week, after a ‘test viewing’ at the Roxby Downs Lions Park.

Friends and film buffs brought picnics, chairs and blankets to the Lions Park to watch a screening of ‘Café Baghdad’ complete with cartoon forerunners, projected onto the back of the football oval

scoreboard.

“We’ve had a lot of support, from the Woomera and Districts Football League, from Roxby Alive and council,” Ms Fordham said. “Now that we’ve had our test run, we’re going to open the viewings to the public.”

The group will screen ‘Mad Max’ on Saturday, November 29.Cost is $5 a head and film-goers are invited to bring along nibblies and a picnic blanket and enjoy the social atmosphere from 7.30pm, for an after-dusk viewing.

“It’s just a great, grown-up night out and a chance to take advantage of the balmy nights,” Ms Carmody said.

“We’ll be leaning towards arthouse films, and people are welcome to give us their suggestions.”

‘Black Cat Bone’ has performed across three continents – and now they’re coming to Roxby Downs.

The Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Boogie band performed on the Min Stage of the famous Big River Festival in San Antonio, Texas in 1991, and also on that tour of the United States, performed in New Orleans, Baton Rouge in Louisiana, and on NBC Television, with a special requested concert at Fort Huachuca for the Desert Storm troops after the Desert Storm war in Iraq.

The band also performed across Arizona and Texas and made a 30 minute television documentary of the tour for US television.

In 1993, ‘Black Cat Bone’ became the first band since the Vietnam War to perform in the communist countries of Vietnam and Laos, filling the Red Army Stadium in Hanoi on tow consecutive nights.

GOOD NEWS PAGE Local school hosts Mass for learning program ROXBY DOWNS…On November 6, 2003, Saint Barbara’s Parish School hosted the region’s annual LAP (Learning Assitance Program) Mass for the first time.

LAP operates in more than 10,000 non-government and government-funded schools, with more than 10,000 volunteers.

“We have LAP for special students in schools to help them become independent, optimistic, openminded, knowledgeable, caring and communicators,” principal Ree Tyas said.

“It also helps them to have more confidence in themselves.

Bishop Eugene Hurley and Father Jim Monaghan celebrated the LAP Mass locally.

Mrs Kathy McEvoy, the new director for the Catholic Education Department for the Pt Pirie diocese, also attended the mass at Saint Barbara’s. This was the first school in the diocese that Mrs McEvoy has visited as the new director for the Catholic Education Department.

This year the theme for the LAP Mass was ‘Gifts Of The Outback’.

Volunteers came from Adelaide, Hallet Cove, Whyalla, Port Augusta, and Port Pirie to represent their areas.

A prayer was said for all the LAP Volunteers, new and old.

New faces at medical practice

Kindergarten kids get a taste for music

Tania Perkins, 33, grew up locally and has called the region home for 23 years.

Tania, parents Margaret and Jim, and brothers Darren and Bradley, were the first family in Roxby Downs in 1980.

She herself attended school at Andamooka as a child, moving there last year to work locally as an adult.

“I actually did 18 months of School of the Air before there were enough kids in the township to throw them into a four-wheel-drive and ‘bus’ us to Andamooka for school,” she told The Monitor this week.

“I can remember if it was too hot we had to go home from school.

But if it rained, we’d go home too because the roads weren’t sealed and we’d get bogged in out here.

“Andamooka hasn’t changed all that much to me from memory, although the sealed road makes a big difference.

“The big change is Roxby Downs – the township wasn’t there, we just lived in the small caravan park out at Olympic Dam which is now Camp 1.”

A registered nurse, Tania also volunteers for the SA Ambulance Service and as an APOMA committee member.

But it is her role as part of the Frontier Services that she loves most,

“I went away to boarding school and uni and worked in Alice Springs and Adelaide and I just missed home – I came back a year ago now to be close to my family and escape the rat race,” she said. “And now I coordinate the Andamooka Community Support Service.

“This service has been here since the mid to late 80s and we’re the only service like it in the area.

“We provide respite care, and home and community care, caring for the frail elderly and young people with disabilities in their homes.

“It’s my way of helping other people stay at home, and in town – because when you’ve lived locally long enough you don’t want to leave.”

MUSIC CLASS...Local musician Lilia Miller treated Roxby Downs Kindergarten students to several renditions of nursery rhyme ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ on a variety of instruments including trumpet, cello, keyboard and recorder. The activity was designed as a listening exercise for the children. The visit was also a chance to widen the students’ understanding of music, and a chance to extend the kindergarten’s ‘community visitors’ program which invites local residents to visit the kindergarten and talk to the children about their jobs, hobbies and backgrounds.

St Barbara’s Parish School opens its doors ROXBY DOWNS... Open Day at St Barbara’s Parish School saw many families visiting various classrooms, our library, computer room and administration block.

This time gave the parents and staff of St Barbara’s a chance to show people around the school and answer any questions they may have with regard to the curriculum, classes and facilities.

The morning also gave us the opportunity to discuss with people some of the special programs that St Barbara’s will have on offer next year.

Programs such as the Learning Assistance Program (LAP), Languages Other Than English (Spanish) and Reading Recovery.

All of the classrooms were open on the day with displays of students’ work and class teachers being accessible to the families.

The visitors were many and varied.

Some families of the school enjoyed looking through their children’s classrooms, while other families who were interested in enrolling their children, and those who just wanted to have a look around, joined together to visit our school.

The region’s largest recycler ROXBY DOWNS...

Waste management contractor SBS is currently in negotiations with Roxby Downs Municipal Council to build a transfer station near its existing Gosse St yard.

The transfer station would allow residents to deposit their garbage at a manned yard, increasing opportunities for recycling and stopping all residential traffic to the existing landfill site at Opal Rd. “We believe people will be more conscientious if the facility is based closer to the town,” Mr Smith said.

“It might also promote people to recycle more because they are already coming to the transfer yard Council and SBS have pinpointed three possible locations for the proposed transfer station, feasibility study is in progress.

“Recycling is an essential service, especially in a community like this, so isolated from normal services,” Mr Smith said.

“We’ve been lucky to have the support of the community, industry and council in our operations.”

- primarily beer bottles with the local community producing around 10 tonne of bottles a fortnight.

This compares to about 10 bales of cans weekly.

Each bale comprises around 14,000 cans.

SBS employs around 30 people locally as part of its recycling and waste services and has been recycling locally for five years.

While recycling would not normally be a viable service in such a remote region as Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera, the business’s costs are offset by its

freight interests.

In addition to general recycling, SBS also works closely with the WMC salvage program.

SBS currently recycles cardboard from the Olympic Dam site, Roxby Foodland and catering company Eurest, and plans to extend the service to other industrial businesses in the region.

Around 10 tonne of cardboard is recycled locally every month.

Some is reclaimed from landfill and dropped to yard by the community or by local industry, but more than 50 per cent is recycled by WMC Sal-

vage Yard.

Glass, cans and cardboard can be recycled locally at the SBS yard in Gosse St, Roxby Downs.

SBS also accepts clean, non-deposit glass such as jam jars and sauce bottles.

The yard is open from 8am to 4pm on weekdays, and 9am to noon on Saturdays.

SBS collects recyclables from Andamooka on Wednesdays and from Woomera on Fridays - phone 8671 1154 to confirm your pick-up. .

Miss Nash…We have been busy making Christmas presents. We are sewing one present and we also made another present on the computers with some of Miss Craker’s Year Nine students. That was really cool. We really appreciated their help. We’ve still got more presents to make! Our families will be so spoilt this Christmas!

Miss Trasy…R/1 students are finding out what people in other countries do to celebrate Christmas. We have made snowmen from Canada, Poinsettias from Mexico, La Befama witches from Italy and a Nativity scene from Spain. Come and see our work displayed in the Library.

Mrs Nitschke…R-2 have begun learning Christmas songs! “Away in the Manger” and “Deck the Halls” are two favourites.

Headstart…We have had another busy week with a visit to the dentist and we have enjoyed having the Kindy children for visits. We had fun making our Christmas stars and our paper puddings.

Mrs Marksteiner…In Peer Support, we are making masks with Ms DeLeo’s Year Four class for Carnivale. Carnivale is a special festival in Italy.

We are also learning to sing Silent Night in three different languages.

Miss Methofer…This week, we hae been learning about “er” words. We have written about our mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers and drawn family portraits.

Mrs Zeptner…This week, the class is getting into the spirit of Christmas. We have been talking about the first Christmas and why we celebrate Christmas.

Mrs Hallion…We have learnt two cultural dances! One from the Netherlands about a rabbit, and a dance from Israel about a goat. We are so clever!

Ms Christall/Ms Hallion…No chance, a poor chance, a good chance! We’ve been learning about chances! What’s the chance of someone walking on the ceiling? No chance!

RADIO CLUB...Darryl Stuckey, 15, teacher Ben Summerton, Matt Verral, 15, Zak Zeptner, 14, and teacher Dan Bradley creating their own radio broadcasts as part of the RDAS ‘radio club’.

Student DJs making music Roxby Downs Area School students are honing their broadcast skills as part of the popular ‘radio club’ on Friday afternoons.

The team of around 20 dedicated DJs, who have completed a program of technical and theoretical instruction, are now putting that theory into practice on their own in-house radio broadcasts.

“The set-up we’ve got here is stateof-the-art and the guys in the club have been really hands-on in learning the technology,” teacher Ben Summerton

said.

“They set up the equipment every lesson and we have to kick them out at 4pm after school. They’re gaining some real experience putting together their own broadcasts and they’ve enjoyed the freedom to explore the technology and gain their own ideas about what makes good radio.”

“It’s got me listening differently to radio,” student Darryl Stuckey said.

“I like it because I really get into the music, it affects me emotionally,” fellow club-member Matt Verral said.

P&F has raised more than $10,000 this year and has given approximately $17,500 to the Playspace Grounds Committee for playground equipment.

Staffing 2004...While staffing is an ongoing issue throughout the year we are coming down to the ‘business’ end of the process.

As is quite usual, we have a reasonable turnover of staff occurring this year.

Some teachers have been made aware of their positions for next year through the School Choice process.

Most of this information has already been published.

Ms Concetta De Leo has won a position at Gepps Cross Primary School in the second round of School Choice and she has our congratulations and best wishes for the future.

We continue to have difficulty in obtaining a qualified Technical Studies teacher.

However, we will make alternative arrangements for students in the senior years and modify programs to give middle school students some access to appropriate technology programs.

We have been able to attract good replacement teachers in previous years.

Despite an international, and even national, shortage of teachers in some learning areas we will continue to work to staff classes with the best teachers.

Perhaps we need to value and appreciate the extremely hard work our current teachers do for the benefit of our students as some specialist teachers are particularly hard to replace.

Presentation/concert nights...In Week 7, November 25, the 7-12 Cohort will hold the annual Presentation Night.

This evening is a significant one for students and families as it is where special effort and achievement is recognised publicly.

It is also a showcase for student talent.

We urge parents of 7-12 students to attend this event.

In Week 8, December 2, the R-6 Cohort will be staging a Concert Night.

Students from each class will perform for parents and peers.

The program promises to display a wide range of talent and R-6 parents are sure to enjoy this event.

Parent helper morning tea...On Thursday, November 27, staff invite all parents helpers to a special Parent Helper Morning Tea in the school staffroom at recess time.

All parents/caregivers who have helped in anyway within the school are invited.

Please take this opportunity for staff to personally thank and express their appreciation for your support and enthusiasm.

End of term...As the end of the school year approaches Year 12 final exams are underway and Year 11 subjects are close to finishing.

All students in Years 7-10 are required to attend school for the remainder of the year.

A flexible program will be available for Year 10 students on Friday afternoons and a letter will inform parents of the options.

The term ends on Friday, December 5 for students.

The last bell will go at 2 pm.

The Olympic Dam/Andamooka bus will run 1 hour earlier.

The assembly to farewell students will be at 11.45am in the stadium.

MOSAIC...Students, from left, Sophie Wissell, Shannon Castle, Brody Elson, Kasiah Barrand, Nicol Franks, Amber-Lee Hancock-Inglis, with Mark Beenham of Beenham Elite who donated a range of tiles and tiling supplies for the mosaic tables created by students in ‘Mosaic Club’. “Our Mosaic Club has been running for a semester now, taking old tables and refurbishing them using mosaic tiles and paint,” teacher Sharon Fuss said. “We are very grateful to Mark Beenham for donating tiles, paint, glue and grout for us to use. This donation gives the students somethign new and different to do, and they have done an excellent job.” Mr Beenham said he was impressed by the students’ creations.

“Donating the tiles is nothing when you see what great work the kids have done with them,” he said.

The Uniform Shop is now open on Tuesday mornings 8.45am – 9.15am and Thursday afternoons from 3.00pm – 3.30pm.

The shop will also be opening in the New School Year - Friday, January 23, 2004, 10am – 12 noon.

We are currently looking for volunteers to register an interest for next year.

Meredith Graham has been a stalwart volunteer at the uniform shop this year, but coordinators are calling for parents to volunteer an hour or two a week in the shop.

has volunteered this year to our school and hope that many others can help her out next year.

Volunteers are needed to support as little as half an hour each week.

Volunteering involves opening the shop for half an hour each week, assisting parents and students to purchase uniforms, keeping records of uniform sales and handling of cash sales.

This is a great way for parents to volunteer time without having to be caught up in meetings.

Canteen Assistant Manager The position of Canteen Assistant Manager is vacant and will need to be filled prior to the start of the school year – January 27, 2004.

Individuals wanting to apply for this position can collect Job and Person specifications from the front office.

This position is a casual position for 15-20 hours per school week. Applications close Friday, November 28 at 4pm.

Creating Roxby’s future - how the pieces fit together WATER…We all take it for granted, yet without it we cannot survive. What’s special about Roxby Water? Where does it come from? How does its cost compare with water prices in Adelaide and other remote locations? How do we pay for it? What’s its quality like and how does it measure up?

Overview...Council’s appointment as a Water Distribution and Sewerage Authority for the Roxby Downs Township arises as a result of Section 13 of the Roxby Downs (Indenture Ratification) Act 1982.

This Act is very important as it sets Roxby apart from other Local Governments.

This section “amongst other things” requires Council to comply with standards normally applicable to SA Water, the State Government owned water supplier to metropolitan Adelaide, specifies that Council should take practical efforts in sewerage effluent wastewater re-use, specifies how much we can pay for water and also allows any profits from water prices to be used to fund Council services and facilities.

Council operates water and sewerage services under the ROXBY WATER banner as a separate commercial business unit, similar to SA Water which is a wholly owned Government enterprise.

Water meters are read concurrently with electricity meters on a quarterly basis at the end of June, September, December and March each year.

Some 1300 accounts for water and sewerage are sent out early the following month.

Customers can pay by cash, cheque, credit card or direct debit from a nominated bank account.

Water Source...Water for Roxby Downs, Olympic Dam Village and Olympic Dam Operations mine and processing plant is sourced by WMC Resources from the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) near the southern and eastern areas of Lake Eyre.

The GAB is a vast natural resource covering 1.7 million square kilometres, taking in large areas of South Australia and Queensland as well as smaller sections of NSW and the Northern Territory.

It contains immense reserves of water and is constantly being recharged by rainfall which causes enormous water pressure.

This results in seepage to the surface and the formation of extensive natural springs.

WMC’s consumption of water is regulated by South Australian Government licences to ensure continuing protection of the springs and that other users, particularly pastoralists, are not affected.

This compares with WMC’s current charge to the Council for supplying water to the township of $1.10 per kilolitre.

In effect water consumers are not paying their way; a situation that for any commercial situation would not be tolerated!

According to the Roxby Downs (Indenture Ratification) Act, WMC is only entitled to charge Roxby Council the average price of water supplied by the State to South Australian consumers.

As a result in January 2004 WMC’s charge to Council will rise to $1.20 per kilolitre.

However, this is still significantly below the cost of supplying the high quality potable water.

When Council receives its potable water it then automatically checks the level of free chlorine in the water and if necessary adds additional chlorine by gas before then pumping it to residents within the township via approximately 30 km of pipe work. Council must meet the additional cost associated with this further treatment of the water and the maintenance of the town’s water supply network.

This is by way of a Community Service Obligation which translates to around a $0.30 per kl.

Following this review a phased in price structure to reflect a 70 per cent increase in the cost of water under the Indenture, Council adopted a two-step incentive-based pricing structure for water with access and step entitlements based on the size of water meter or the number of residential units.

However, in Coober Pedy the average water price is about $3.30 per kl.

Essentially, one access unit is allocated per 20mm property service.

The structure aligns with that successfully implemented by the Hunter Water Corporation in NSW.

Option 1…One option would be to increase the price of water charged, say on a proportional basis. Ie increase individual tariffs and or the individual thresholds.

A minimum water allowance per access unit also applies to all properties.

For instance in 2003 the operating cost to WMC of supplying water suitable for domestic use in Roxby Downs is about $1.40 per kilolitre.

Pricing Options Council has already indicated that changes will need to be introduced by 2004.

Minimum

Since supply to the town began in 1988, WMC has provided a significant subsidy of the total cost.

In Andamooka it costs about $13 per kl as water has to be carted from WMC’s standpipe in Roxby Downs; whilst bottled water costs over $1000 per kl!

For a 50mm service 6.25 access units are allocated based on the rationale that a 50mm service has 6.25 times the volume than that of a 20mm service.

The security of the long-term water supply for the Olympic Dam Operations is dependant on demonstration that the resource is being managed sustainably and that users respect this valuable resource.

This is because of the requirement to install and operate an extensive water supply scheme in a remote and arid location and the cost of treatment required to provide high quality potable water.

Although difficult to quantify the current price of water in Roxby averages out at $1.60 per kl.

This price does not cover SA Water’s total costs as the State Government requires SA Water to subsidise some operations, particularly in Country South Australia.

In July 2002 this phased in process was completed with the following rates applied on a quarterly basis in 2002/03.

Overall WMC has spent over $100 million on the existing water supply infrastructure. This results in costs to supply water at Olympic Dam and to the Roxby Downs Township which are high in comparison with the charges levied by other water utilities that provide water for industrial and domestic uses to urban centres in Australia.

How does our price of water compare?...Obviously, given our constraints water prices are dearer than elsewhere in South Australia where state-wide average pricing is in vouge.

Water Price & Consumption...In May 2000 Council prepared a discussion paper on the philosophy behind the pricing of water.

These bore fields have been subject to extensive environmental assessment and regulation.

Currently, WMC’s daily consumption from the GAB averages 32 mega litres. Of this, about 2.2 mega litres is used by the Roxby Downs Township.

Combined with the imminent increase in the purchase price of water, water prices will need to increase by some 8-9 per cent.

This compares to an average water price across the state of about $1.20 per kl.

WMC has two bore fields in the GAB, respectively 100km north and 200km north-east of Olympic Dam.

Water for the township is then pumped some 10km to a covered water supply dam on the outskirts of town and then into Council’s pump station.

Given that the annual dividend affects our Municipal deficit Roxby Water should obviously strive to do likewise while maintaining fair and reasonable prices!

This cost is reflected in the final water price charged to consumers.

This was in part to provide a financial incentive for all customers to conserve water and thereby make our contribution sustainable management of the GAB water resource.

After being pumped up to 200 km to a desalination plant on the WMC mine lease, water for domestic use must undergo further treatment to bring it to an acceptable quality, which incurs further capital and operating costs.

Indeed SA Water does return a commercial dividend to the State Government for water sales some $75.1 million per annum!

Since the township’s establishment, Council, WMC and the residents of Roxby Downs have participated in programs to limit water consumption that have involved – ! reusing treated sewage effluent for watering sports fields and the golf course ! educational programs stressing the need for water conservation and the means by which this can be achieved ! encouraging residents to establish gardens with low water requirements using native plant species ! planning requirements to limit the size of garden areas and swimming pools for new developments.

Overall water consumption including allowance for Parks and Gardens is around 440 litres per head per day. This compares favourably with main capital cities and is less than the 650 litres per head per day specified as a maximum under the Indenture Act. Commercial Considerations...The consequence of these water conservation programs and the change in pricing structure has been significant. On the one hand consumption has decreased by some 20 per cent; which from an environmental perspective is a darn good thing! However, as a result there has been a notable reduction in the annual financial dividend that Roxby Water returned to the municipal operations; thereby affecting the ability of the Council to maintain

The question arises as to how best to put this into effect.

Option 2…Another option is to introduce an access charge, in lieu of a minimum charge and reduce the tariffs slightly.

The pros and cons with each are subject to considerable debate.

On the one hand Option 1 focuses heavily on the consumption aspect and rewards so called “responsible” consumer behaviour.

On the other hand Option 2 has the advantage that it recognises that from an equity viewpoint, regardless of consumption, there is an inherent cost to have the infrastructure in place and that everyone should pay the same basic amount for this purpose.

Incentive-based water pricing would still be retained as part of the pricing structure.

This approach has been adopted by most other water authorities in Australia and has the secondary but important benefit of coinciding with general National Competition Policy which discourages the use of minimum water allowances as being uncompetitive.

In Roxby this would most likely mean that an access unit charge would replace the minimum charge on an access unit basis.

What does this all mean?

The bottom line is that we have a quality water product in a remote location that our neighbours would eagerly desire.

However, it will cost us more to maintain the quality and quantity of water supply in the future.

Structural Jigsaw Puzzle...Whilst there are always issues that arise from time to time discussion on Water, along with earlier ones on Rates, Electricity, Sewerage and Asset Management, make up the most significant ones that Council is currently facing as they all potentially require some financial structural adjustment.

GOOD ENOUGH TO DRINK...WMC Resources Chief Civil Engineer Jeremy Folwell and Council Water and Sewerage Manager Trevor Kroemer drink a toast to the quality of Roxby Downs’ water.

Roxby’s water quality by comparison Under the Indenture Act WMC are required to provide “potable” water to the township. By definition “potable water” must meet various standards as set by the World Health Organisation.

As a consequence WMC regularly conduct a range of testing to ensure required quality is achieved.

However, the desalination process produces water of very high quality.

It is very soft, has a small amount of natural fluoride which in part naturally assists in prevention of tooth decay, and is low in dissolved solids.

The issue of fluoride in water is a topical one.

For instance the optimal levels of fluoride in potable water to reduce tooth decay range from about 0.6 mg/L in sub-tropical climates to 1.1 mg/L in temperate climates.

Fluoride levels above 1.2 to 1.5 mg/L fluoride can cause fluorosis which can be detrimental to dental health in children aged up to six years old.

The natural level of fluoride in GAB water is about 3.3 mg/L. The fluoride level is reduced through the desalination process to a level currently of about 0.1 mg/L in potable water supplied to Roxby Downs.

Historically, the fluoride levels in potable water at Roxby Downs have been about 0.4 mg/L. However, whilst the water quality improved significantly in 2001 this also resulted in slightly lower fluoride levels.

Fluoridation is currently carried out in most capital and major cities but is not normally carried out in the water supplies to major

regional centres or remote areas.

From a taste viewpoint our water rates highly.

Nevertheless, people’s sense of taste and smell tend to vary, and so the acceptability of the same water can vary from person to person, and from day to day.

WMC and the Council disinfect the water using two of the most commonly used methods – sodium hypochlorite and chlorine gas respectively.

Chlorine has a threshold taste in water of about 0.6 mg/L, but some people can detect levels as low as 0.2 mg/L. Free chlorine residual in major Australian potable water supplies range from 0.1 mg/L to 4 mg/L. In Roxby, Council has a target free chlorine level of 0.5mg/L. By comparison our water ‘stacks up’ very well against other water supplies.

To test this we recently subjected samples to a barrage of testing, in line with that carried out as part of an in depth article that appeared in the 16-17 August edition of the Weekend Australian Part One of The Water Survey – From the Tap. Copies of these results which are very detailed are available from the Council Office.

Overall perhaps we take the quality of our water for granted. As one local has said “Our water is so good we should bottle it!”

As we know one local business does and it is a darn site cheaper than bottled water from elsewhere!

UPDATE - Tourism Forum The Roxby Downs Tourism Forum meeting was held on November 10, 2003, at 5pm, in the Roxby Downs Council boardrooms.

Strategic Plan - The tourism forum’s strategic plan is underway and should be completed by the end of the year.

This plan will aid the forum to prioritise actions which will boost tourism and the town’s image as a tourist destination, through guidance from the Council and other organisations.

Information Bay - A commitment has been made to upgrade the information bay on Olympic Way south of the town.

Graffiti – The recent problem of graffiti on road signs around town was discussed and the Council is working with police to alleviate the problem.

Historical Memorabilia - Plans are to be developed on the use of historical mining equipment to be incorporated into an attraction throughout town.

Tourism Brochures - The Flinders Ranges and Outback South Australia (FROSA) tourism brochure is required to be upgraded for 2004.

The Tourism Forum will aid the Visitor Centre to develop the text and images over the next few months.

Juniors hit the track for fun day of racing With the points championships over, Saturday night at Red Dunes Raceway was time for the drivers and their beasts to cool off their heels, turn down the adrenaline and have a little fun.

The Annual Fun Night for Roxby Downs Dirt Circuit Club is a time for drivers to relax a bit and go social, have a little fun, throw in some burnouts in the burnout competition and sometimes even enjoy a little one on one racing.

With the hype surrounding this meeting that the Monaro would be back, the crowds poured through the gates in hope of a little one on one, with our very own AGrade Champion, Steve Webber.

BMX club celebrates birthday Roxby Downs BMX Club celebrated its second birthday this month following a series of successes over the past year.

“We had a couple of riders qualify to ride in the world titles, and a few others who brought home plates from different meets,” parent and potential rider Sarah May said.

“For a smaller club we’ve got some real talent, and the kids have show up well in competition against the clubs in Adelaide. We’ve a dedicated core of riders, but we’d really like to see some new faces on the course in the coming year.”

BMX dad Chris Cooper, whose own children are keen competitors on the local course, said the BMX club offered local youth the chance to compete on

a range of “challenging courses all over the state”.

“That’s probably our biggest challenge next year is to get ourselves a challenging track to attract other riders to Roxby Downs.”

While the club is working to upgrade the current track, plans for a new track have temporarily stalled while a suitable site is identified, according to Mr Cooper.

Festive end to golfing season at Roxby

LADIES CHAMPION...Roxby Downs Golf Club ladies champion Di Beveridge was congratulated on her win by club captain Dougal MacLeod.

The Closing day Ambrose sponsored by Kempe was held on Saturday, November 15, 2003. It was a very hot day and the competition was cut back to nine holes because of the heat.

The winning team for the day, James Daley, David Gibson, Rod Banks and Sandy Donald, lost one of their players early in the round to the heat and had to finish the final six holes with three players.

They still managed to put together a Gross 33 and with handicap taken off had a Nett 26.062.

The experienced team (by virtue of their combined ages) of Di Beveridge, Neville Petherick, Hugh Beveridge and John Freeman also had a Gross 33, but didn’t have as much handicap to play with and their Nett was 27.562.

The NAGA went to Scott Bray, Fred Schott and Anthony Howie for their ‘Regulation Golf’ - they were regularly off course but still enjoyed their day.

On November 8, 2003, golfers played their last individual, 18 hole round of golf for the season.

Another one of the Roxby Downs Golf Club’s stalwart sponsors, John Crane Performance Pumps, sponsored a Par Bisque event.

A Par Bisque involves the golfer choosing where to use his/her allocated handicap on which hole.

David Gibson came in with a plus

11 for the day to take out the overall winner.

Vlad Jamnicky with his Plus 10 was the runner up.

The AGM was held on Saturday November 8, 2003.

Don Crawford was re-elected as President, Jenny Nitschke was elected as Secretary and David Cornes has taken over the role of Treasurer.

Four committee members were also elected, Tom Bilney, John Kerr (Re-elected), Rod Banks and James Daley.

Immediately following the AGM was the annual presentation dinner.

The captain of the club, Dougal Macleod, gave a short speech of thanks to all before announcing and giving out awards.

The club has had a very successful season with good numbers at almost all events held over the year. The weather has also been very kind with few cold, very hot or windy days.

A new event - The Outback Sporting Challenge was held with great success at short notice.

The Eldo Desert Classic had good participation with a different winning combination of Chris Kenny and Jason Habel.

The Open had a new sponsor in Thiess with John Kerr taking out the Championship after a playoff with Robin Passmore.

In fact, during this season there was a playoff for the major prizes in all of the major events except the ELDO. The Club also had a B Grade player take out the Club Championship which is a local first.

Andamooka sports shooting The Andamooka Sports Shooting Association held a clay target shoot on Saturday, November 8, 2003, starting at 8pm. It was attended by 11 registered shooters, who shot 50 targets over two rounds. The conditions were favorable for the shooters being a still night, however, with some adjustments to the traps and targets the shooters had to work harder in the second round.

Also, it was great to see several visitors come along try their hand at clay target shooting. With some training and persistence, they all managed to break targets.

SPORT Miners name Daddow 2004 season coach Coach Matthew Daddow will lead Roxby Districts Sporting Club into season 2004, club president Shane Thomson told The Monitor last week.

“Matthew provided positive and constructive input in his first year as coach of the Roxby Miners in 2003,” Thomson said.

“With greater player depth and building on our clubs business plan, 2004 will see further improvements in our on-field and off-field success, both as a football and social club.”

Daddow said he was happy to take on the role again this year, to build on the work he started in season 2003.

“I just wanted to continue what I was doing from last year and offer some stability in leadership for the club,” he told The Monitor last week, following the an-

Thomson named Auskick coordinator of the year

Black belt success highlight of grading Roxby Downs Shotokan Karate held its grading on November 8, 2003. All students performed well on the day and were awarded grades according to the skill levels.

The grading was led by Jim Morton 5th Dan, Chief Instructor of the Karate Shotokan of South Australia (KSSA).

The highlight of the grading was

Rebecca Clancy who graded to junior black belt in a ‘closed door’ grading session.

Rebecca is the second junior black belt produced by the Roxby club and the first junior female to achieve this level.

Jim Morton went on to comment that it was the best junior black belt grading he had ever seen.

Swimming for fun isn’t just kid stuff Swimming isn’t just for the kids this summer, according Roxby Downs’ new ‘Aussie Masters’ swimmers.

The eclectic group of swimmers, all aged 20 or older, have started meeting on Sunday mornings for fun, fitness, friendship - and a barbecue breakfast.

After a strong original interest of nine swimmers on the group’s first meeting this month, organiser Tammy Hill expects more residents to take advantage of the social meetings in coming weeks.

“This isn’t a competition - swimmers are able to exercise at their own pace, just enjoying some lap swimming without having to fight for a clear lane,”

Mrs Hill said.

“There is the chance later on for some competition at the ‘Aussie Masters’ carnival in Port Pirie where Olympian Kieren Perkins will make a guest appearance.

“But this is also just a chance to enjoy some lap swimming during the summer months with some great people.”

Aussie Masters swimming starts at 7.30am on Sunday mornings and finishes with a barbecue breakfast for the cost of a $2 donation.

Local footballer and Auskick coach Shane Thomson has named Auskick Coordinator of the Year this month.

Thomson, who has been involved with local Auskick and junior football for four years, is the second Roxby Downs coordinator to achieve the accolade, following in the footsteps of the region’s original Auskick coordinator Dave Bennett.

Thomson welcomed the award as a reflection on the success of Roxby Downs’ Auskick program, now in its second year.

“There are 14,000 Auskick players statewide, but our crew is the second biggest with more than 140 kids,” he said.

“This award is really an award for the local community, and for all the parents who make our Auskick program work.

“Any number of people could take on the coordinator’s role and it could flow through and keep developing over the years because of that family involvment and general support we’ve received over the past two years.

“It’s the Andamooka mums who make the drive and stay after school to make sure their kids make the trainings, and the dads who volunteer to coach, the parents who come with their kids to training - without them we wouldn’t be so successful.”

“I’d like to make special mention of Steve Daly in his first time as U7s coordinator for training and game days, and thanks to all the parents and coaches, game-day coaches who helped with training.”

Thomson’s own sons Nicholas, 5, and Jackson, 8, have benefited from the program “In a lot of areas a program like this would be school or football club-based, but here it’s community based,” he said.

“The local parents and families are not just participants - they’re part-owners in the program.”

Not that local clubs aren’t taking an interest in the program.

As president of the Roxby Districts Sporting Club, better known as ‘the Miners’, Thomson has seen the club make a commitment to supporting the Auskick program locally.

“One of the key objectives of The Miners business plan is to nurture and support junior football in the community - and this is the best way we can see of doing this.

“It’s been a great year all round in 2003 - I’ve got my Level 2 Australian Football Coaching accreditation.

“As I get more qualified I can pass on more to the kids, in a more structure way, but most of all I just enjoy seeing the kids develop and learn.

“We’ve been given a lot of opportunities like playing at AAMI Stadium, which we expect to again next season.

In 2004 the local Auskick program will comprise a Level 1 coaching course for parents and community members, another AAMI demonstration game, a challenge day for parents and kids in July and a nine-a-side U/10 round robin - “just to keep the fun in the game”.

Splash Day 2003 was definitely a big success, with all of the St Barbara’s Parish School children participating in the events.

The day started on Monday at 9am with the individual events.

It was good to hear some positive cheering from the rest of the school.

At 10.30am we started the house events, which consisted of cork throw, rope pull and the doughnut race.

These were mixed with upper primary and lower primary.

Thanks to the LGF students for helping the lower primary students.

LGF had just returned from their graduation camp the day before, so they were very sunburned and tired, though this did not stop them from having a positive, yet competitive attitude.

Mr Ralston was keen to race one of the students, Kathryn, in the pool.

After she agreed, they raced 50 metres of breaststroke.

Kathryn won.

Then, after all the cheering, it was lunchtime.

Many thanks go to the P&F for organising the barbeque.

They definitely made the day.

St Barbara’s would also like to thank the parents for giving up their time and energy to make Splash Day possible.

All the students wish to thank Mr Ralston for organising the day and making it a great outing for the parents to come and watch their children swim in a friendly environment.

Youth basketball a growing success The Roxby Downs community’s commitment to junior basketball has culminated this year in five of the town’s home-grown talents being selected to represent the region in the upcoming State Country Cup. At a time when Roxby Downs Basketball Association boasts its highest-ever number of junior players, the association also boasts a record number of state representatives.

The successful teenagers - Brad Ley, 12, Ben Hansford, 15, Jaebyn Drefke, 12, back, Katica Cockshell and Teagan Coombes, 13 – will compete in their age groups in Albury in January 2004.

Only two country teams in each age group have been selected to represent SA in this national competition.

“These are kids that have grown up in sport locally and it’s a real credit to the local basketball association that they’ve done so well,” local ‘basketball mum’ and association committee member Anna

Cockshell said.

“The standard of association coaching has been instrumental to their success.

“Not only do we have a cross section of the local agegroups, in the five local basketballers selected, but two former Roxby residents have also been selected.”

Twelve-year-olds Colby Whittaker and Lauren Lowe will also represent SA at the Country Cup. The pair received the bulk of their basketball experience in the Roxby Downs junior basketball league before moving to Port Pirie recently.

“How exciting for a club this small to have so many representatives,” Mrs Cockshell said.

“And it’s only one reflection of the high local standards kids are constantly getting to state competitions from here.

“We’ve never had this many before though.

“We are now asking the whole town to get behind these kids, as they will be conducting ongoing fundraising to help them get to Albury in January 2004.”
