Happy 20th Roxby Volume 4, Thursday November 20th, 2008

oxby Downs and the Olympic Dam Mine celebrated its 20th birthday last Saturday at the BHP Billiton Family Day.

Hundreds turned out to join the festivities and commemorate the second decade of the town’s existence in a day of fun and excitement. Beginning at 12pm, Richardson Place was closed off and fun activities were set up, performances were viewed and, of course, the birthday cake was cut. The swimming pool was opened for free entry to the public and a scrumptious sausage sizzle was provided to the hungry townsfolk. A visit from Port Power was definitely a highlight, with the team signing autographs, hosting handball competitions, teaching their skills to the public and chatting with anyone interested. Several performances from the Amazing Drumming Monkeys seemed to be a highlight for the children, with singing and dancing from these cute puppets sending excitement levels soaring. But it was the bubbles that set the pulse racing for the children of Roxby Downs. The fire services set up a bubble machine, creating a pool of foam for the kids to slide through, that saw a collection of tanned children turn white. The unveiling of the commemorative sculpture saw excitement and tears flow with months of hard work finally completed.

Artists Gerry McMahon and an emotional Rachel Young delivered speeches of thanks to everyone involved in the project, including BHP Billiton and the local schools and kindergarten for their generous help and support. As the day slowly wound to a close, there was but one final presentation to take place. Covering an entire table and split into two halves due to its size, Roxby’s and Olympic Dam’s birthday cake was a sight to behold. Yvette Mooney and John Hatty led the crowd in the celebration, singing Happy Birthday, which was broadcast live over ROX FM, and cutting the cake for the town to share. At last the day ended, the Roxby Rocket made its final run and the tired and delighted children and parents made their way home, managing to beat the rain by mere minutes. “It was fantastic day, we were really lucky with the weather, and it was great to see so many community members out in force celebrating the day with us,” said BHP Billiton’s Public Affairs Principal Advisor Amada Hudson. “There was a lot of work involved and we couldn’t have done it without the fantastic help from all the volunteers; they were amazing.” With this year’s Family Day over, excitement is already building for next year’s event, so here’s to a happy birthday for Roxby Downs and the Olympic Dam Mine and many more to come.
