Outback Games proposed Proposals are underway for a region wide establishment of the “Outback Games” and Roxby Downs is on the list of potential locations.

For the past twelve months, there has been talk of establishing a festival which would take place in many locations across the region. This could boost sport and recreational participation and provide social opportunities for outback communities.

Research is currently underway to gauge community response for the proposed festival, determining which regions would be willing to participate and in what areas.

There are several opportunities for outback towns to host events encompassing sports and recreation, with events such as concerts, workshops, tourism displays and sporting events all on the list of considerations.

It is believed combining the event to include several heats in different communities would alleviate the need for participants and supporters to travel large distances and would be more manageable as an event owned by a cluster of communities.

The festival aims to develop the capacity of local sporting and recreational clubs, promote the region’s high quality sporting facilities to the wider market, celebrate the unique heritage of host towns, and generate economic benefits for the com-

munities of the outback.

Each community involved in the festival will essentially own their particular event and all management of the games will be at the discretion of the host community and will rely on the availability of sporting and recreational facilities.

Certain regions with similar interests and facilities may also have the opportunity to combine with other towns to make full use of the resources available, to provide a fun and exciting festival.

Events may also provide opportunities for buskers, stalls, exhibitions and concerts to be performed while other aspects of the festival operate.

This festival is expected to be a fantastic opportunity for regional communities to come together and promote their local businesses, clubs and organisations.

Communities of the region have been asked to show their support for the games by sending in information regarding the particular events each town would be willing to host.

Communities are also encouraged to attend an Event Management Workshop in Port Augusta on November 2 to discuss the concept of the games.

This event will be hosted by Steve Brown, Senior Lecturer in International Tourism, Event Design and Management at Flinders University, and aims to help communities build skills in event management for the games.

All’s Good In Roxby I was enjoying a coffee with friends the other morning and the subject of life in Roxby came up. My friends had just returned home from an interstate travel adventure and wondered how things had been in Roxby.

As we talked about the positive life we enjoy in Roxby I remembered two excellent editorials that I had read in The Monitor. One editorial was in the July 10th edition and the other was in the September 4th edition.

At the time of the July 10th editorial, which was titled, ‘Do I Live in a Different Town?’ a reasonable amount of negativity was floating around Roxby. Some at that time seemed to enjoy making unfounded claims of what our community was so desperately in need of.

Fortunately the personal pursuit of the Cold Water Brigade has now subsided and our town has once again returned to being the warm and positive town that most of us believe it to be.

But there is much to celebrate in this wonderful transient outback multicultural community of ours that we call home and the Sept 4th editorial of The Monitor made mention of one of our great qualities. The editorial headlines read, “Spirit – You See It Everywhere.”

There is indeed a real positive spirit amongst us in Roxby Downs and if you haven’t felt it or experienced it then I can tell you many others have. In fact come along to our Outback Multi Cultural Group one day and hear first hand from our overseas people.

Then there are our visitors. I often stop and talk to our visitors as I hope you do and it’s wonderful to hear them speak of our town in such warm and positive ways.

Recently a mate and I had a marvelous talk with an elderly but energetic couple who were visiting Roxby for the “first” time. The couple had traveled through this area over 30 years ago and they spoke of the red sand dunes that existed along Richardson Place.

They especially mentioned the red sand dunes around the National Bank, Post Office and Gregory Street area.

But they were staggered and pleasantly surprised by the positive progress that had been made in Roxby and they loved what they saw.

He was an architect by profession and his wife was an easy going person who appreciated us stopping to have a chat. It was a moment my mate and I will remember for a long time because this couple reminded us of the huge progress that has been made in such a short length of time.

Past and present leaders of Roxby have therefore been a huge and positive influence in the life of our town because they and their senior management teams have been the ones who have taken us from the red sand dunes era to where we are today.

So when we think about Roxby of today we need to remember and give thanks for the quality leadership of so many because often little or no attention is given to their achievements.

Our town has always celebrated a strong volunteer base over the years and still does today. Therefore much of our spirit and strength is attributed to the volunteers who offer their skills; time and talent so that we can enjoy life in the outback a whole lot more.

Another positive Roxby trait is our mutual respect for one another. No one has ownership on Roxby because we all come from somewhere else so there is this mutual respect and understanding of each other regardless of who we are or where we come from. We should celebrate such a rare and wonderful quality because those who have come from overseas certainly do.

Roxby is also a town where we can feel good about ourselves because we not only have the potential to achieve our personal and family goals and expectations whilst we are here. But by harnessing our time and talent we can build an even safer, healthier and more positive community.

Roxby is also a smart community because we now enjoy a huge emphasis on youth development. Our young people are able to have fun, gain valuable skills, acquire knowledge, and develop parts of their character in Roxby like never before.

So much more could be said about our life and home in the outback… but it’s far better to take a look and see.

Clean Up Roxby a Success

By Krystle Bower On Sunday the 28th September approximately 30 members of the community turned up to Lions Park to register for Clean up Roxby Downs Day. The event which was organised by Steve Moss and Sophie Torrisi went off without a hitch, with all the participants being very enthusiastic and motivated about cleaning up the town.

The Council provided a BBQ for everyone who participated, There was a lucky draw for prizes provided by kind donations from Tandales Hair and Beauty and Mitre Ten. Steve Moss ended the event saying thank-you to the sponsors of the prizes, the council for their involvement and the biggest thanks on the day went to the community members who turned up on their weekend to clean the streets which are “looking better than they have for many years” said Steve Moss.

Roxby logs on Two weeks ago The Monitor reported that Roxby Downs had been rated as having the highest connection to Broadband in South Australia with sixty two percent (62%) of our residents logged on.

The high connection to the faster broadband services indicated high usage.

This raised the question what do Roxbyites use the web for?

Our earlier report said that many people used the net because of remoteness, quoting they used it to keep in touch with friends but also for shopping and entertainment.

The Monitor has been out and about asking people of all ages what they mainly use the internet for?

Our investigating confirmed the Bank West survey that 62 % was near the mark. Of all people interviewed by The Monitor 65% were connected by broadband.

A sign of the times was that the most popular reason for jumping on the net was to keep in communication with family and friends through sites such as MSN, Face book, hotmail, You Tube and Bebo. It seemed the tyranny of distance is lessened for many people by the use of the digital highway. The attraction of the web for communication is bolstered by the fact that it communication across the web is cheaper than phone calls.

An added bonus that users can exchange photos and video, have a text conversation in real time and even talk face to face for free.

On of the mothers asked what did she use the web for said , “I search mainly for support forums and information sites,” a response that was repeated by many mothers with children who logged on regularly to source information of a wide rang of topics concerning pregnancy, baby and children’s

health and growth. They were also regular on line shoppers seeking a wide range of goods that were essential but, not readily available, or had limited choice, in Roxby Downs such as children clothing and shoes.

Amongst on line shoppers E Bay turned out to be a very popular site with men as well as women, although men were less likely to shop on line than there female counterparts. Several also sold goods over the site.

Like mothers many people used the web to research information for work or their personal pursuits and interests.

Surprisingly banking and bill paying weren’t as popular a choice as one would have imagined given that Roxby has only one of the major mainstream banks whose closest branches are the best part of 300 kilometres away.

A number of people used the web at work particularly for research however the highest use from those interviewed by The Monitor was definitely for personal use.

When the public was asked what sites they would like to see more of, the response was diverse with requests for more general shopping, make-up, discount websites, games, entertainment, and even more research sites.

The big question was could you live in Roxby without the availability of the web. The Monitor’s mini survey of 40 people, which including a balance of female and males, revealed that 77.5 % could no live without the web. Females were more adamant they could not “live” without the net with some participants nearly going into shock from the thought of it.

It makes you wonder how many hours per week does Roxby spend on the web?

Bourbon flavoured chip shocks buyers People are shock over the creation of a Jim Beam brand bourbon flavoured chip and it’s on sale in supermarkets.

The chip, while not actually containing alcohol, is feared to be promoting drinking with younger children, who would think the creation of such a chip would be “cool.”

“You’d think they’d have alcohol ingredients by looking at them,” said a concerned mother.

Keith Evans, Executive Director of Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia says it’s incredibly disappointing to see this chip on sale in supermarkets.

Many people across the country believe this chip should only be sold in licensed venues, such as pubs and clubs.

But even this could be crossing the line.

When asked his opinion on the chips, Roxby Downs Club Manager Steve Ellard said he did not think it was a good idea at all.

“It’s programming children; I love bourbon but there is still a line where you have to stop.

“I don’t think they should even be sold in licensed venues because kids are still able to eat them.

“I certainly wouldn’t sell them at the Club.”

Staff at Roxby Downs Lunch on the Run were

of a similar mind, believing the promotion of alcohol towards children was not right.

“Since there is no alcohol in them I don’t think they need to go worrying too much about it, as long as they keep them in the pubs,” said a spokesperson from Lunch on the Run. Keith Evans believes these chips create a “positive association” between alcohol and a favourite food for children.

“It’s not as if Jim Beam are not aware of the concerns about young people and alcohol.”

Jim Beam spokesman Sean Cook said the chips are targeted at adults and predominately sold in liquor stores, stating they are trying to keep them within that sort of environment.

Still, the chips have been on sale in supermarkets, readily available to anyone wishing to buy them.

A sport with a difference

When one thinks of sporting events around the Roxby Downs region, people rarely consider shooting among the options.

But it is an option and a fun and exciting one at that.

While there are many misconceptions concerning firearms and the people who use them, be assured the members of the Andamooka Sports Shooting Association (ASSA) are extremely safe and competent in their use of firearms.

Located approximately seven kilometers outside of Andamooka, the shooting range provides the perfect atmosphere for anyone interested in the use of firearms.

Founded in the late 80s, the ASSA has seen its share of ups and downs.

With the Government’s Buy-Back Scheme, many members turned in

their firearms and left the association.

In fact, the Government clampdown on firearms has made it considerably difficult for the members of shooters associations to maintain their sport.

“It seems like the Government is making it harder and harder for people to enjoy the sport,” said member Ken Rapsey.

“Gun laws are tightened making it difficult for us but it’s often the people with illegal firearms that are causing all the trouble.

“Conditions change for us but illegal firearms owners have no conditions.”

Despite the conditions imposed on shooters, the members of the ASSA know how to have fun.

With a two day shotgun event occurring every year, many people turn up to show their skill with a twelvegage shotgun.

“We used to have barbecues every Sunday after a shoot but times have changed since then,” said Ken. “It used to be a real social thing but with shift work and other circumstances, we don’t get as many people out together as we used to.”

“We’d love to see more people get involved with the club and see all the members out here at once.”

The ASSA is a fun and friendly family orientated organization with a strong emphasis on safety.

Strict rules apply when handling firearms at the shooting range, including eye and hearing protection and absolutely no alcohol is to be consumed while shooting.

While many may think guns are unsafe, so long as they are treated properly,

as they are at the shooting range, there is no need to worry.

This is exactly why the members of the ASSA have such enjoyment with their sport, both men and women alike.

“It’s not just a man’s sport; everyone can enjoy it, regardless of their age or gender,” said Matt.

“We’d love to see more people join the club, especially juniors.”

For a sport with a difference, the ASSA is a great way to socialise, have fun and learn more about the use and safety of firearms.

“Everyone is welcome.”

Are you ready for summer?

oxby Downs is on the verge of summer meaning the hot weather is not far away. The question is: are you prepared?

Although the days can be hot and unsettling, summer is the perfect time to get back into the pool, for the guys to dust off the BBQ, turn on the music, crack open a few beers and enjoy some grilled steak and sausages.

Ladies, clean out the wardrobe, no more winter clothes, summer is here and shorts are back in; no more loose jumpers and baggy sweat pants, its time to show off some skin.

Summer is always the perfect time to get in shape and enjoy some time outdoors however, amongst the fun and games, sometimes important messages can go unnoticed or forgotten.

For the sake of yourself and your children’s short term and long term health please Slip, Slop, Slap.

Nobody wants to talk about it, but cancer is a big threat to those who flaunt their bodies in the sun.

At the moment we have a large portion of the town doing an amazing job raising funds for the Cancer Foundation through Relay for Life.

However the best cure for cancers caused by an overdose of sun is not to give it a chance. Be Sun Safe.

You know the rules when playing or working in the sun. The most important being to use 30+ Sunscreen, wear a hat and wearing a shirt and sunglasses. These will all help protect you and your family from harmful UV rays.

Please take special precautions with little children; you may not feel the heat but they definitely will.

At this time of the year it is essential to also remember the dangers of dehydration when working, playing sport or any strenuous acivity.

The heat will easily dehydrate you, so keep the fluid levels high and make sure you don’t overdo any activities.

re yhound Australia has been awarded the inaugural 2008 BHP Billiton Olympic Dam Vendor of the Year Award, an achievement which has enhanced its standing as the country’s leading coach services provider.

Hands on experience for students The week long trip included Olympic Dam gave them an experience of the mines deposits and exploration.

Hosted by the Olympic Dam Mine Technical Services Department, the third year students received more than a show on tell as they participated in a range of activities including underground mapping, mineral identification and diamond drill core logging, and the creation of three dimensional structures using mining computer software “This visit was a great opportunity for Olympic Dam, because the majority of the students were at a stage in their degree where they need to make a decision on what career path they will go down, which could include areas such as mining, exploration or even research,” explains Olympic Dam Superintendent Mine Geology, Josh Bryant.

“The visit to Olympic Dam allowed them to gain insight into the diverse nature of the role of a mine geologist, the Olympic Dam operation and the opportunities that working as a geologist for BHP

Billiton presents.”

These activities were interlaced with presentations on the discovery and formation of Olympic Dam, the value chain and the impact that different minerals can have on downstream processes, the potential influence of geotechnical structures within the mine, and a tour of the onsite processing facilities.

For many students, this was their first visit underground let alone to an operating mine.

“The practical nature of the tour takes a lot of planning and support from the operation,” Josh said.

“The geology team is very enthusiastic in letting the students experience what they will be doing once they complete their degree and the skills they will put into practice. It also enables us to showcase Olympic Dam as one of the world’s greatest orebodies.

“The feedback from the students has been extremely positive, with most saying they were simply blown away with this trip. The students really look forward to coming here and they didn’t leave disappointed. This wouldn’t work without the efforts of the mine geology team, but we feel it is really worthwhile. Who knows – they could be our future employees

Mum’s mornings

O

ne of the most important events happening every week in Roxby Downs probably goes unnoticed by most.

W

ith the advent of regular flights into the Andamooka airstrip APOMA have spent $5,000.00 upgrading the runway.

The runway, which had a minor repair earlier this year after it was damaged by vandals, has had a significant increase in use and it was decided to further improve the runway.

The strip is 64 metres wide and the upgrade concentrated on the centre 16 metres of the runway which will allow for smoother landings and take offs. The work included the use of graders, water and a heavy roller.

The increase in use has come predominantly from the chartered airflights which are flying staff and

Since the Roxby Downs Health Services and Child and Family Health Services started the event over 3 years ago, Thursday’s Mothers Coffee Morning has been a great success.

The mornings were organised so mums could have coffee and chat with other mums while their children played. The idea was to create an occasion that mums could meet regularly and informally talk to community health nurse’s and ask questions, or get advice about child rearing, health issues and tips for coping with various stages that young children go through. The single engine charters were refused permission to land at the Olympic Dam airport but were given permission by APOMA to • Wednesday 15th October 2008 land at Andamooka.

f it’s a good Aussie feed and a welcoming chat you’re after, then come on down to Andamooka and visit Bill and Staff y’s Steak Van. These two characters have been friends for many years now and appreciate the value of a good feed and chinwag.

Living in Andamooka for more than ten years, Staff y and Bill decided to go into partnership for the steak van and have since then provided fantastic food to anyone with a rumbling gut.

“We had a bit too much to drink one night and Staff y suggested we buy the steak van,” explains Bill when asked

“We made the owners an offer they couldn’t refuse and set about restoring the van.

“The next morning we sobered up and realised there was a lot of work to be done with the van.”

In no time at all, Bill and Staff y had the van up and running and a line of customers waiting to be fed.

Pranksters at heart, Bill and Staff y think of their business more as a hobby rather than job and do all they can to make it a fun and casual environment.

“We hang a lot of signs up around the van, like TAB and American Express,” said Bill.

“People come in and ask if we take American Express cards and we say yes but we don’t give them back and we need your pin number.”

“We haven’t had any so far,” added Staff y.

The jokes never stop with these two comical personalities, even when the situation turns serious.

“We had a copper come down one night, all official with his clip board and asked us if we were selling beer,” said Bill.

“They knew we weren’t but some-

one had complained, so I asked him what he wanted to drink.”

“We also sell drugs,” joked Staff y, indicating to the sign displayed outside the van.

It reads: Steak Van and takeaway liquor; Ice sold here too.

For those who do not know, Ice is a form of Methyl amphetamine.

These two blokes love the lifestyle Andamooka has to offer and have seen many things over the years but the one aspect of life they enjoy is being able to sit down with a mate and open a cold one.

Bill explains there are times when he has been drinking during the afternoon and then had to Bill and Staffy enjoy the social environment of their steak van. to be working well.

On the practical side the library offers a laminating and photocopying service. Laminating fees are:A4 size - $1.00 per sheet and A3 size - $2.00 per sheet. Any size can be catered for with posters costing $6.50 per metre.

Photocopying fees are very reasonable with A4 black and white at 20c a copy and colour 50c a copy.

After being shifted to all manner of venues over the past few years the Andamooka School/Community library is now in its new home and fully functional.

The library is now in a beautiful new refurbished building which is a relaxed and aesthetically pleasing environment.

The library is continually adding books, magazines and DVD’s to its shelves with weekly deliveries.

All community members are welcome with adults able to borrow up to 8 items for the duration of two weeks while children can borrow up to three items. DVDs are loaned on a two nightly basis.

The library has far more to offer than just loan books.

The library is also the internet hub of Andamooka offering the opportunity for residents to keep track of email or surf the web. If any elderly residents are not familiar with using the web and internet there are volunteers on hand on Wednesday evenings to guide the uninitiated through the processes and jargon. Once you are familiar with a few steps it becomes second nature.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to get some of the older s part of the October long weekend, Andamooka will play host to the attractions back in the future, especially now that we OpalFestival, a weekend of fun and have more time to organise the event.”

Until then, people will still have a great time for entertainment for all.

Kicking off on Friday night with a barbecue to open the event, Andamooka welcomes everyone interested in having a great time.

Saturday will see a day of action for the kids as parents are able to leave them with supervision and enjoy all the town has to offer.

Stop into the Tucker Box for a meal while the kids enjoy billycart and sack racing and a wheelbarrow race is available to everyone wishing to participate.

Prizes are abundant, with no person leaving empty handed.

“We want people walking away with their pockets full, not empty,” said Peter Allen.

“The community wants to make this a fun day and give parents the chance to have a break from the kids and do their own thing.”

Unfortunately over the years, the events of the long weekend have subsided.

“It used to be a great weekend with the Army coming up and shooting competitions but it all got a bit too much to organise.”

Now, however, events are back in motion, not quite to the standard of what they once were but still good enough for a weekend of fun.

You may argue its not enough or you may want higher standards, but the point is we have more available than most regional towns of four to five thousand people. Let’s not stop lobbying for better services but let’s also be realistic in our expectations.

Shopping now that’s a bit more problematic. We are limited in choice not only in range of products available but also in the degree of retail therapy we can engender. Retailing is a numbers game. Bigger populations spend more and can support more shops and services.

However there are alternatives available.

In one of our lead articles in this paper we have reported that more and more people and shopping on line whether it be for food, clothing, whitegoods, home entertainment or books, CDs and DVDs and more.

In terms of media communications and entertainment Roxby has seven radio stations, two local newspapers, four TV channels and pay TV available. All of the countries major newspapers and magazines are available through our local newsagency.

For our size we must receive one of the highest media coverage’s per household in Australia.

What causes isolation?

E

I occasionally hear people mention someone who is living in Roxby and having difficulty with handling the sense of isolation they have created. It is a state of mind not reserved just for newcomers, there are some who never totally loose it.

First the question: How isolated are we in Roxby Downs?

We are three to three and a half hours by road from two major regional towns, Pt Augusta and Whyalla, we have up to twenty five scheduled air flights per week taking only seventy five minutes to reach a capital city, or six and half hours by road if you need to drive.

By regional standards we have good health services available and a raft of visiting practitioners for a wide range of medical services.

We also have an ambulance service and the Royal Flying Doctor.

In education we have two schools and a TAFE not to mention commercial training

Finally in relation to acceptance of new residents and colleagues from any country we are said to be a very friendly, tolerant and accepting community.

Isolated, I don’t think so. Because of the distance I might accept semi isolated.

So why do some people feel isolated? We may not be able to understand it but it is absolutely true for the people who experience it.

Having a sense of isolation in Roxby Downs, particularly beyond the initial arrival period, is a self isolation that I can only imagine is driven by personal experiences and the need of a helping and understanding hand.

To those of you who live here but still carry around the thought you are isolated due to distance our the lack of choices, think again and measure your expectation against reality.

For those who have the genuine feeling of isolation because they have not yet connected with the community and new friends, thank goodness for our Big Welcome Program, Mothers Coffee mornings on Thursday, the Multicultural group who meet on Fridays, the Pram Walking group, the Strengthening Families program, Tom Beever as our Family and Youth Officer, Rotary and others who all seek to integrate new people into our community.

Be on the look out for anyone who seems to be hiding in their house, or who has a very limited interaction with people and remember, they may not be newcomers, and take on the role to ensure they get connected to like minded people.

Letters to the Editor Glass hazard for walkers Hi I saw a story in the paper about walking to work and school.

I wanted to say I love walking and would love for my daughter to walk with me but I keep her in the pram because of all the glass that is on the foot paths it is dangerous and I don’t want my daughter to get glass in her foot or fall over and even worse get glass in her face. If people find it to hard to carry those heavy bottles all the way home and put them in the bin at least place the bottle down and not break it.

Then someone else can pick it up and put it where it is meant to go.

Last summer someone threw a glass in the kids pool at the swimming centre and a little girl her foot cut. It would be good if people could stop smashing there bottles Name and details supplied A Big Thankyou to our Local Police” Recently we came home to find someone had been in our home and some of our personal effects were missing. As you can imagine I became quite distressed. I rang the

local police and within a space of 5 minutes there was a Detective and police officer at my home. They were so thorough; they calmed me down and carefully went through everything. Although still upset, they re-assured me and made me feel heaps better before they left.

The follow up was very re-assuring; Detective Ford liaised with me on several occasions and was so thorough with his investigation.

Knowing that someone has been through your personal belongings is a horrible feeling. Although all things are replaceable it is the sentimental cost that really affects you.

So often we hear so many negative things in life and although so far nothing has turned up it is so fantastic to know that the police are there to support you and respond so quickly. We really are lucky to have such a good police force in Roxby, again, “Thankyou so very much,” I really do appreciate everything you have done for me and my family.

Police Report Inappropriate driver behaviour leads to fines As a result of Police attention to driver behaviour in Olympic Dam a number of drivers were issued with Infringement Notices for speeding, failing to wear seatbelts and failing to give way. Due to concerns raised by members of the public, Police will continue to pay attention to driver behaviour in Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs.

An adult male person was reported for driving without due care due to an incident that occurred at Andamooka on the 19th of September 2008.

An adult female was reported for driving whilst disqualified from holding a driver’s licence on Pioneer Drive.

An adult male was also reported for riding a motor bike whilst disqualified, unregistered and uninsured motor bike on Gregory Street. The motor bike was on the road at night without lights causing an obvious danger to themselves and other road users.

An adult female was reported for driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle on Pioneer Dr. Police issued an expiation notice

to a male driving a motor vehicle on Olympic Way, ROXBY DOWNS whilst his licence had expired.

In the early house of Sunday morning the 28th of September 2008 Police observed a male driving the wrong way west along Richardson Place. The male was stopped and taken back to the Roxby Downs Police Station for a breath Analysis. The male recorded a final reading of 0.190 and was reported for driving the wrong way on Richardson Pl and driving with above the prescribed concentration of Alcohol Disturbances and disorderly behaviour Police were called to Alberrie Street by a member of the public who discovered a very intoxicated male collapsed on the footpath out the front of their house. Police attended and conveyed the male to his home address.

Police were called to a disturbance on Pioneer Dr by members of the public concerned about an intoxicated male urinating on cars and his aggressive behaviour. As a result a male juvenile was arrested for disorderly behaviour. He was bailed to appear at the Roxby Downs Court in November.

Scouts welcome leaders Roxby Downs Scouts have been privileged to welcome new and experienced leaders to the troupe.

Michael Holden and Michael Harding are two locals who have donated their time and expertise to help out the local Scouts.

Michael Holden rose to the highest level of scouting to receive his Queen Scout achievement and has been involved as a leader for Scouts since his children went through the movement.

Michael has worked in Roxby Downs for the past 19 years, however only made the move to town resident four months ago.

Also joining as a Scout leader is Michael Harding.

Michael hails from Canada where he was a leader in the Yellow Knife Troop until work opportunities brought him to Roxby two years ago.

Friends recently mentioned the Scouts were looking for new leaders which prompted Michael to draw the uniform from the wardrobe and put his hand up.

“It’s great to have new leaders joining our group,” said Scout Group Leader Trent

Burton.

The addition of new leaders enables Scouts to provide greater supervision to the children involved, however waiting lists are still in effect as there is no space available for such great numbers to meet.

“We’re already splitting at the seams in the Church,” said Trent.

“We’d love to take on more enthusiastic members but there just isn’t the room at the moment.

“We need land which would enable us to push forward with plans to create a Scout Hall and bunkhouse.”

As of now, the Scouts would gladly welcome anyone interested in becoming a leader.

“All training is provided for the scouts and everyone involved will definitely get a kick out of it,” said Trent.

There is a particular need for female leaders currently as there are so few within the Scouts.

Sports Power gives to school

The RDAS Year 12 PE class graciously accepted the generous donations of Badminton equipment from the local Sports Power.

Students of Roxby Downs Area School were last week treated to a heartfelt donation from Sports Power.

Sports Power generously gave a collection of badminton equipment to the school to help with their Physical Education program.

“We can’t always get the funding to get the things we want so it’s great Sports Power can help us out,” said RDAS PE teacher Lee Copeland.

“Our kids go to the school and we had extra stock so we thought it would be nice to give it to the school,” said Denise Bell and Jill Koning.

“Badminton is not a huge sport in town and since the school does it, we thought they’d get more use out of the equipment than we would.

“This way it gets used.”

Electrifying Relay for Life Relay for Life will be an electrified event thanks to the Roxby Council team Bright Sparks who are determined they will contribute to making Relay for Life memorable. “We look forward to the camaraderie, fun, and interaction with other teams” Said Michelle Hales, Team Captain.

The name Bright Sparks was developed from the theme electricity, which aligns with the Council role as the towns provider of electricity through Roxby

Power. “We have two electricians (“sparkies”) on staff and we have been able to develop the theme using their ideas and know how,” said Michelle Hales.

The Team joined the event because they all know at least one person who has been affected by Cancer, and they wanted to show their support for the community wide event.

“We are excited to be part of this inaugural event because it is bringing people from across the community together for a shared goal to raise money for cancer research. It is also a celebration of life and shows what

Snake School A

pproximately 40 people attended a seminar on Tuesday 23 September to learn more about snakes in the region and around our township. Presented by snake expert Geoff Coombe and hosted by BHP Billiton the audience learnt to recognise different snakes and how to act when confronted by a snake.

Snakes although dangerous are not aggressive by nature and will not attack you unless provoked. It is important to be able to distinguish between fact and myth when it comes to snakes.

It takes a number of years for a snake to grow to full size and the snake population depends on the food available, the amount of refuge in the area and the predominance of predators.

When confronted by a snake the best advice is to leave them alone, don’t give them a reason to attack you.

The Seminar included information on first aid, which snakes you can expect to see around Roxby and an understanding of the true nature of snakes.

It is important that parents educate their children about snakes. Children are often bitten when trying to pick up or play with a snake because they do not understand the dangers associated with them.

People are often bitten because they attempt to remove snakes from their property or try to kill them.

Over 500 people are treated for snake bite every year many requiring hospitalisation.

When camping in their favourite spot, such as Lake Mary people are warned to be on the lookout for snakes. Forget the tactic of running a piece of rope around the perimeter of your tent or camping location.

It is a complete myth that it will repel snakes.

Snakes are not known as nocturnal animals, however these reptiles are more known for coming out at night in Roxby

Downs due to the ground temperature in summer, reaching as high as 70 degrees. There can be increased danger at night and people are advised to take precautions. Mr Coombe said “if you go out at night take a torch, and wear closed in shoes and long pants.”

Other advice included property owners and renters alike to maintain their yards making sure there is no scrap material lying around for snakes to hide amongst.

It is essential to make sure your yard is not the perfect ‘home’ for snakes. Snakes are attracted to messy yards and yards that play host to other animals such as field mice, rats, and bushy plants.

For the safety of your family this summer make sure they are educated about the dangers of snakes and particularly that they are not aggressive and not to be threatened by their presence. It’s important to remain calm and avoid any contact.

1 ever fete a success st

S

t Barbara’s School held its very first School Fete on Friday night.

The entire evening proved to be very successful.

Money was being raised to provide perimeter fencing for the school and the fete was a wonderful event for the whole Roxby community.

Many families attended the night and enjoyed the entertainment, food, drinks and live auction.

Classes devised their own stalls for the evening and these proved very popular.

Activities included a disco, side show attractions, guessing games and artistic work.

Bernadette Lacey, principal of the school was very happy with the way the community responded.

The organising committee put in many hours of hard work prior to the event to ensure its success.

The school would like to acknowledge its vibrant parent community for their support as well as the people and companies who donated time, money and goods for the event.

On Saturday 13th September 2008, the inaugural Copley & Districts Gymkhana was held at the Beltana Racetrack. Despite the windy conditions, approximately 300 people attended and 65 horses.

The Under 12 leading rider was won by Anna Ozolins of Quorn, the Under 16 leading rider was won by Emily Nicholls of Leigh Creek and an Encouragement Award won by Joel Alcorn of Leigh Creek. The senior Leading Rider was won by Corey Ferguson of North Moolooloo Station, Leigh Creek and his horse Woody took out the leading horse trophy. The North Flinders Earthmoving 600m Sprint and the Copley Pub Social Club 1000m Cup was won by Jenny Reschke, of Quorn, on Out Of The Hat. Evening entertainment was provided by Leigh Creek DJ, Ross Warner and it was great to see people stay around for a delicious meal and the dancing which followed.

T

he Roxby Downs Area School last week held a “what do you want to be when you grow up” theme day to raise money and donations for the Salvation Army.

RIGHT: Tayla, Josh and Luci had a ball dressing up as their future careers.

The day was a fantastic success, with students from all year levels dressing up as what they wanted to be in the future, which provided some much loved entertainment for students.

Originally intended to be a fundraiser for the Salvation Army Winter Blanket Appeal, Student Voice representative Jodie Luscombe decided to expand the donation appeal to incorporate more than just winter warmth.

“By the time I got around to organising it, winter was over so it’s basically just general donations,” said Jodie.

“We decided on the ‘when I grow up’ theme not only because it allows the kids to show off their dreams but also lets people know there are those out there less fortunate who sometimes do not have the ability to achieve their dreams.”

With merely weeks of preparation, Jodie and the student voice representatives have pulled off a fantastic effort.

“We’ve raised about $300 in cash and heaps of blankets, clothes and toys,” said Jodie.

Every class has put in a tremendous effort to raise money for the Salvation Army and as an incentive, the school held a competition for the classes who could raise the most donations.

Special congratulations must go to Mr Jones’s, Ms Tucker’s and Mrs Cormack’s classes, who each raised a considerable amount of donations for those in less fortunate situations then their own.

With a heart as big as Jodie’s and a school willing to back it, there is no limit to the wondrous things Roxby Downs Area School can do for the people of this world.

Choir sing their hearts out

The Roxby Downs Area School Choir had a fantastic time performing in Adelaide at the Festival of Music.

By Zak Zeptner Roxby Downs Area School students were last week involved in the South Australian Primary School’s Festival of Music in Adelaide where they performed with other schools across the state.

Excitement was abuzz for the year 5-7 students as they made their way to Adelaide but as teacher Jane Orchid tells, the nerves did set in.

“They didn’t stop bouncing around the whole way to Adelaide; I was devastated when the DVD player didn’t work on the way down,” laughed Jane.

“As we were lined up outside the theatre the nerves started to show but as soon as the kids were up on stage, a sense of pride took over.”

Pride was indeed the theme of the evening, with the students combining their voices with over 400 others students to perform a range of songs.

One such song, entitled “Southern Sky”, which pays respect to some true histories and beliefs that are important to our way of life in Australia, was a true hit.

“Hearing the students sing as one for the first time took my breath away,” said Jane.

“We spend so long working towards this, performing at assemblies and for younger students along the way, but it was amazing to hear the harmonies when there are so many voices singing together.”

“I was overwhelmed by how professional the performance was.”

Since its inception in 1891, the Festival of Music has been a fantastic way for young singers to show their talent to the world and takes a considerable amount of preparation and dedication

to achieve.

“The students practice for an hour and a half on Friday afternoons,” described Jane.

“During this time we do some vocal warms ups then practice tricky parts of songs.

“The students have to work really hard to sing their different parts and learn all the choreography.”

Not only do the students have a big task to achieve but the teachers and helpers have their work cut out for them.

“I have to start getting organised for the 2009 choir trip now to ensure we can get accommodation and transport,” said Jane.

“I also have to order song books and CD’s, and apply for a budget to cover some of the costs associated with running the choir.

“As the trip gets closer, I spend considerable time assessing students, organising uniforms, planning activities to do in Adelaide and confirming all bookings.”

Without the hard work of people like Jane and all other volunteer helpers who lend their time and support to the choir, many students would not have the opportunity to express their vocal talents to the public.

And for the students wishing to be involved in next years Festival of Music, be quick and join the school choir.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to be involved in a structured singing programme and who knows, we may have a future Australian Idol waiting to be discovered.”

ith lenders dropping their interest rates in recent weeks, the temptation to loosen the belt and lower repayments is high.

But according to the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) every dollar households can contribute goes a long way.

“People have been stretched to maintain their mortgage repayments in recent months and often the first reaction at a rate drop will be to spend that saving elsewhere,” says Phil Naylor, CEO of the MFAA. “However, if you’re able to keep repayments up above the minimum instalments then it could potentially shave years off the end of your loan.”

Any extra one-off repayment like a tax return can also provide a healthy boost to a loan balance, and minimise the overall interest, says Mr Naylor.

“You can’t escape interest, but you can

minimise its impact with the occasional lump sum payment. Instead of hitting the weekend sales with your tax return, consider making an extra mortgage repayment.”

Maintaining Self Talk about Dusty Dogs The sun is shining and the temperature is warming; now is the time to make the most of the glorious weather! Venture outside, bask in the sunshine and tone up with the simple steps provided by the Pulse Gym staff every week.

This week you can step into the privacy of your backyard, find a warm, sunny spot and tone up your tummy, hips and bottom.

Be sure to include basic stretching with all of your exercises and don’t be afraid to incorporate a brisk walk or jog to promote trimming down.

Tips to always remember before starting any exercise: • Engage abdominal muscles - switch the inner abdominal muscles on, which helps the body balance and establish the correct posture.

• Always keep your body in line – be sure that your feet, knees, hips, shoulder and head are facing forward.

• Use correct breathing techniques – breathing out on the extraneous part of the exercise (the hard part) • Always warm up the muscles that are to be targeted when using weighted exercises. Never use weights on cold muscles!!!

• Always stretch after a workout – this releases lactic acid in the muscles and aids in recovery. It will also improve flexibility if done on a continued and regular basis.

Exercise of the week SINGLE LEG PLANK Muscles targeted -abs, hips and gluteus 1. Lie in your back with your knees bent & feet flat on the floor.

2. Cross your arms across your chest & brace your abs.

3. Raise the lower half of one leg so that it’s in line with your thigh.

4. Press the other heel into the floor as you squeeze your bottom & raise your body up in line with your thighs.

5. Hold the position as long as you can manage, up to 1 minute.

Nosiness Living in rural regions promotes a sense of community, which enhances the familiarity with all things that are happening around you. People tend to be interested in what others are doing which lends one to be aware of who their neighbours are and what they do.

Whether you have 5 metres between houses or 500kms between properties, it is almost guaranteed that country citizens will know something about the person/people who they share a boundary with.

Take those in my neighbourhood for example: one thoroughly enjoys playing football and being involved with his local club. One of the people over the back once worked with my partner and shares a fence with a pair of American Box Terriers. Around the corner, my colleague resides with her family of four.

There is nothing wrong with knowing some things about your neighbours; you may stop and have a chinwag over the fence or crack a beer and enjoy the sun together. The quintessential neighbour was represented on the 1990s hit series, “Home Improvement”; the Taylor’s neighbour ‘Wilson’ would often offer wise words of advice to all the members of his neighbouring family. If only all our neighbours were as insightful.

Thankfully, I have lovely neighbours, however, in other parts, people are not so lucky. We have all seen episodes of over-embellished trash-news shows that illustrate nightmare neighbours. There are some people who take their neighbours to court because, “a leaf from their gumtree was hanging over our pool, and they wouldn’t remove it… it was causing danger to our lilo.”

Luckily, Roxby Downs seems not to have such irrational and irate residents – perhaps the smog in the city or the publicity and temporary celebrity status rushed to that persons head?

Love, vampires and action Over the past few months I have heard an overwhelming hype for the book Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. After several months of telling myself I had to read, I finally went out and bought this book.

And thank God I did. Twilight has been a fantastic read, bringing to me a reading experience I have not had since first setting my sights on the Harry Potter books, which were fantastic.

The success of the book, I think, is due to its diversity. Not only is it a fantasy tale set in modern times about a clan of vampires but it is also a compelling and realistic (well apart from the vampires) love story.

Stephanie Meyer tells the tale of a seventeen year old girl, Bella, who moves to the countryside in Washington to be with her father. There she meets the strange and mysterious Edward Cullen. What follows is a tale of excitement, adventure and danger but the most fascinating as-

pect of the book is the way Meyer tells the love story between Edward and Bella.

Thankfully there is no sappy romance; instead the tale is told in a realistic fashion. It is not love at first sight and happily every after but rather an infatuation between teenagers that manifests into something deeper. But do not be discouraged if the romance tale is not your thing because there is plenty of action and mystery involved, not to mention humour.

The conversations between Bella and Edward range from serious and foreboding to comical and light hearted. But amongst the love, there is danger as Bella finds being connected with a vampire definitely has its downsides.

It is no wonder this book is an international number one best seller and with the movie adaptation to come out at the end of the year, the hype will keep growing. So don’t be left out; read Twilight and discover the reason why books can be so fascinating.

At last a superhero you can believe in After watching the horrendous Superman Returns and Spiderman 3 movies, my only thought was please don’t go trying to make more of these stupid films (The new Batman series not included). Thank God Hollywood did not listen to me and went ahead and made Iron Man. This is a film the superhero genre can be proud of.

From the moment it began I was enthralled.

The action was exciting though not too over the top, the story was fast paced leaving few boring parts and the acting was great. Robert Downy Jr. played a superbly convincing millionaire as Toby Stark and was the centre of comedic relief in the film (I can see why he was chosen to portray Hugh Hefner in his upcoming biopic).

The thing I notice in these superhero movies is the reason behind the hero deciding to do good. I have never really seen how a seemingly ordinary person could suddenly be given this huge power and just decide on the spot that they want to be the good guy. But in Iron Man, the reasons behind Stark’s actions does

not come from an underlying desire to save the world, it comes from his longing to not be remembered as a monster.

Tony Stark is a weapons dealer and after seeing exactly what his weapons are being used for and by whom, he realises many of the world’s atrocities are his fault. That’s what I love about this character; he is not a good-at-heart self-righteous do-gooder but rather a simple man who does not want his name tarnished throughout history as a merchant of death.

Aside from his reasoning, this film provided everything I would expect from a superhero movie. The script is well written, the direction is great and the cast is fantastic. I constantly found myself either engrossed with the action or laughing during the “explosion downtime”, which was great as it left little time to be bored.

All in all, this was a great movie for everyone with an interest in the superhero genre. I can definitely see why Iron Man made it to top of the box office earlier this year.

Deposit of Rubbish etc Under Local Government Regulations it is an offence to deposit rubbish, goods, materials earth, stone gravel or any other substance on a public road or place. This will incur a penalty and a fine.

Abandoned and Illegally Parked Vehicles The Roxby Downs Council is concerned with the number of vehicles including, trailers and caravans which have been either parked or abandoned on the road edge, as well as on the council verge between the road and the property boundary. Parking illegally in Richardson Place is also a concern. Council in the first instance will target the owners of the offending vehicles by issuing written warnings to the owners detailing what charges could be implemented if the vehicle is not moved or parked correctly. Areas to be targeted are as follows: • Parking in disabled zones without a permit.

• Parking in the bus zone opposite Richardson Place.

• Parking near pedestrian crossing to drop off and pick up school children.

• Freight vehicles parked near pedestrian crossings to pick up and deliver goods.

• Parking on the boundary between residence and road.

• Leaving vehicles including Trailers and Caravans on roads for over 24 hours.

• Parallel parking – the driver must position the vehicle to face in the direction in which vehicles could lawfully travel on that part of the road If the offending vehicle is not removed or parked correctly, under the Local Government Act, Council has the power to instigate infringement Notices and/or impound the vehicles for the noted offence.

Please consider others in the Roxby Downs area and for safety reasons as well as appearance of the community, please park correctly.

Parking Residents should be aware of significant expiation fees for parking in a bus zone $79.00 and parking in a disabled zone $235. Other fines are stopping in loading zone $33, failing to park on road $33 (except in median strip parking area) in accordance with ruleparallel parking and failing to park vehicle wholly within parking bay $20.

Advertising on Council Infrastructure Advertising on Council infrastructure such as light poles can attract expiation notices under the Local Government Act. If you spot any such advertising please notify the Council.

Dog Registration Dog registrations for the 2008/09 financial year became due and were payable from the 1st July 2008.

Grace period for registration expired on 31 August 2008; thereafter an $80.00 expiation fee applies under section 33 of the Dog and Cat Management Act. It all started over 40 years ago when Brian came to Andamooka to deliver a bulldozer, which turned into a holiday and long weekend visits which became more and more frequent. As a result Pat and Brian have lived here for the last 7 years.

Preparing for the cycling discipline of the Triahlon Riders are encouraged to enter the event held on 25th October.

W

e all know the common sense things about preparing for a race: hydrating properly, eating well and getting plenty of sleep before competin - but what about the specific preparation for the three disciplines of a triathlon?

Roxby Raptors Cycling Club has put together 6 handy hints to help prepare you better for the cycling discipline of the upcoming 2008 triathlon.

• Set your bike up now, exactly how you are going to ride it in the triathlon.

- Ensure everything is tightened, lubricated and safe and you are comfortable for an extended period of time (up to an hour) on the bike.

- Get the most out of your legs – when sitting on the bike with one pedal lowered and sole of foot parallel to the ground your leg should be only very slightly bent. This position allows you to get the most power from your legs.

• Attempt to ride for at least half an hour twice a week leading up to the triathlon and up to an hour twice a week for the two or three weeks prior to the triathlon.

• When training- don’t go out too hard straight away! You just need to get a steady tempo (pedalling rhythm) going and maintain this tempo for the time you are on the bike. You can build this tempo up during the weeks if possible but consistency is the main goal.

- When racing- start strong to get those wheels rolling, gain your tempo and hold it for the duration.

• Try to find someone to ride with. This ALWAYS provides extra motivation, but be sure to maintain your tempo in training

- not theirs!!

• Remember - Your goal is to hold the highest consistent tempo possible for the entire time you are on the bike each session.

• Hydration & Recovery- drink before, during and after your training session.

As a rough guide you should try to drink about 500ml of water before your training session and continue to sip while you are training and drink a further 500ml – 1500ml over a two hour period post training session. Ensuring your hydration levels are maintained will assist your body with recovery.

Everybody knows that a little bit of practice and training intensifies the satisfaction and especially the enjoyment during and on completion of the race so go for it and have fun!!

The Roxby Raptors Cycling Club welcomes anyone who needs this bit of practice riding prior to the triathlon or needs helping setting up their bike. Roxby Raptors ride socially every Sunday morning at 8am and training rides will begin at the commencement of daylight savings on Saturday mornings and twice mid week for those interested in more intense riding. Anyone with a road bike or similar is always welcome on our social ride (which ends at the Dunes Café coffee shop around 9.30-9.45am).

This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday 25th October. Entry forms are available at Roxby Physio, Sportspower, The Leisure Centre & Dunes Café.

Junior basketball needs help

he junior basketball season is fast approaching and offers to give youngsters the opportunity to develop their skills and have a great time playing the sport but what exactly goes on behind the scenes?

The junior basketball committee is hard at work organising teams and making sure games are up to scratch for the beginning of the season.

The dedicated volunteers of the committee certainly have their work cut out for them as constant problems and unforseen circumstances continually arise and the only thing needed to help the committee members is assistance from parents.

“It’s a very challenging job,” said committee secretary Bev Roberts.

“I’ve been involved in the basketball for years now and it’s a lot of hard work where you constantly feel like your pushing for assistance from parents but you never get much.”

It is a very frustrating predicament the junior basketball committee has trying to arrange support not only for themselves but for the children involved in the game too.

“We’re being tough this season,” said Bev. “If we don’t have people put their hands up to help with things like scoring, we won’t be playing.”

This touch stance comes from committee members feeling they are

underappreciated and overworked, often forced to remain at games all day because no one is willing to offer assistance.

“We were lenient in previous season but that does not get us help and we can’t do it anymore.

“It would be nice to be able to allocate tasks to parents of teams even if its just to score for a few games a week but that wouldn’t work.”

It may sound like the committee is complaining but when looked at from their point of view, it does not seem too much to ask for a little support, after all, it’s your children they are doing this for.

To help people understand what the committee has to go through, The Monitor inquired as to the tasks and responsibilities of the committee.

“We have to find coaches and umpires, organise teams and times to train that fit around the coaches, we have to ensure registration fees are paid and guarantee games run smoothly,” explained Bev. “It’s really a lot of work.”

On top of organising games for every week, there is also the arduous task of preparing basketball carnivals for the kids.

The committee is trusted with selecting players for teams, organising accommodation and sometimes transport and finding coaches and managers.

“We have to make sure the kids selected are able to get down to the games as a lot say they can make it but when the time comes, parents are unable to take them or arrange transport,” said Bev. One such issue the committee is facing at the present is a lack of player nominations.

“At the moment we have about 100 kids less than last year,” said Bev. Anyone wishing to play the game still has to opportunity to put their name down until the third game played this season; after that, no further players will be accepted unless they are new people arriving from out of town.

As with any committee or organisation, the Junior Basketball Committee has received its fair share of complaints however as Bev explains, most people who complain do nothing to help out.

If you are unhappy with the decisions made by the committee, the only solution is to put your hand up and offer assistance as all help from parents will be greatly appreciated.

It’s time to stop sitting around doing nothing for the children of our community, put your hand up and help out with the junior basketball and help make the season an enjoyable event for everyone.
