The Monitor named SA’s top employer ROXBY DOWNS...The Far North and Outbacks’s only free newspaper , The Monitor, will represent SA in the Salvation Army Employer of the Year Awards this month.

The Monitor is just one of six finalists who will be flown to Melbourne on October 13 for the announcement of the national award by awards ambassador Andrew Gaze.

“We don’t hear enough good news stories about all the great things employers are doing and that’s what these awards are all about,” Mr Gaze said.

“The Monitor is a remarkable media initiative and is quite unique,” he said.

“The Monitor was developed as a flexible, child-friendly paper so that a number of the area’s...young mums could return to work while balancing the needs of a young family.”

According to editor Seonie Lyon, Roxby Downs’ unique community dictated how the newspaper would operate.

“The Monitor is a community newspaper - and has to meet its community needs in the office environment as well as on paper,” editor Seonie Lyon said.

“We knew early on that our best source of skilled employees in Roxby Downs was the women and youth of the community.

“More employers need to look at alternative working solutions such as working from home, flexible hours, schoolbased apprenticeships and job-share if they want to tap into the widest skill-base.”

“Right now, there’s nothing like us out there - but maybe this kind of recognition is proof that the workplace is starting to change.”

The winner of the national award will receive $15,000 worth of training packages from Achieve Global.

“There’s been a great reaction to the awards and the judges had a hard decision selecting the finalists,”Salvation Army Employment Plus spokeswoman Meagan Reay said.

“What these awards have shown is that there are so many fantastic organisations out there displaying compassion and caring for their staff.”

Decision day in Grey!

GREY…More than 95,000 voters will line up at the polls throughout the electorate of Grey on October 9, 2004.

Grey represents more than 91 per cent of SA and boasts the largest population of any SA electorate by almost 10,000 people.

Locally, voters will have the opportunity to choose from seven candidates for the MP’s role.

In the Far North and Outback, voters will deposit their ballots at just a handful of polling booths – as outlined in this week’s Monitor on Page 5.

Grey – SA’s biggest electorate, comprising 897,822 square km – has been considered a ‘safe Liberal seat’ since 1993 when MP Barry Wakelin took up the role.

In 2001, the electorate registered a 60.56 per cent vote for Liberal and 39.44 per cent for the Australian Labor Party (ALP).

Until then, Grey had been represented by ALP members for almost 50 years, with only a single term of interruption in the mid60s.

Grey was named for Sir George Grey (1812-1898), Governor of SA from 1841 to 1845.

Parents Playgroup clarification thankful To the Editor, As mums of older pre-school children in Woomera, are thrilled to have Jane Scarr and Joyce Salisbury for support we throw their energy behind Woomera Playgroup.

Dear Editor, through your paper we would like to thank your newspaper and say a big thank you to all the wonderful people of Roxby Downs for all the prayers and all the people that have sent our son Ian Gudger cards and made calls to us, his brother and the hospital.

Also thank you to the people that sent him birthday cards and all the gifts (Get Well and Birthday).

Ian is now out of ICU and in general ward S6.

He gets frustrated at times because he’s still not moving much.

He will be off to Hampstead soon, still a long way to go.

Once again, thank you, it really has helped us to know you are all thinking of him.

We have also appreciated, and wish to have acknowledged, the dedication of other mums who have kept the playgroup running, regularly and successfully, for many more years than suggested in the recent article (The Monitor, Thursday, September 23, 2004).

It was not halted in 1996, rather it has been active and well-supported up until late 2003 when the full impact of the closure of the immigrant detention centre was felt and the town’s population reached its recent low.

Even since that time, we and any other families who wished, have made use of the facilities on an as-needed basis.

It also needs to be noted that the money collected each session is intended to cover the Playgroup Association’s public liability insurance.

In addition to making the building available, the Woomera Board generously cover the cost of electricity and water for playgroup.

I am sure than Mrs Scarr (and Mrs Salisbury) would welcome interest and support from other mums in Woomera and a re-evaluation of the most appropriate meeting times.

Grey candidate Roger Kleinig of the Family First Party, has issued an open letter to standing Grey MP Barry Wakelin. In ‘letters to the editor’, Mr Kleinig sets his case and Mr Wakelin responds.

Dear Mr Wakelin, In regard to recent advertising and newspaper reports of coalition Government achievements and your stated aim to give people in Grey a ‘fair go’, may I respectfully ask your response to the following issues: Tax cuts were provided to every one in Australia apart from those earning under $52,000. Given that significant numbers of people living in rural and regional South Australia are working hard but are earning under $52,000, is this a ‘fair go’ for the Aussie battlers?

In the last decade, Government policy has been responsible for a rise in the cost of housing at almost double the rise in wages, making the affordability of housing for many Australians more of an impossible dream than ever before. Is that a ‘fair go’ for young families aspiring to the Australian dream of home ownership?

The proposal to sell off the remaining 51 per cent of Telstra. There is little profit to be made in telecommunications in rural areas, as is demonstrated by the gaps in mobile phone coverage and the lack of competitors and rollout in rural internet and broadband services. Under a privatised Telstra, future ‘next generation’ technology will only be provided to high profit, non- rural areas. Will this be a ‘fair go’ for country people in the years to come?

The expense of post-secondary education for young country people. The cost involved in sending young people to the city for education can be enormous. Having them linked to parental income until 25years old and now proposing to increase HECS fees is a discouragement to further education. Is this a ‘fair go’ for country kids?

Border protection and orderly migration policy is important, but keeping the children of asylum seekers behind razor wire in the desert or on isolated islands for indefinite periods leads to serious psychological damage. A large proportion of these people who we have treated very harshly have since been proven to be legitimate refugees who have fled harsh and wicked regimes in their homelands. Is this a ‘fair go’ for genuine asylum seekers, desperate to give their kids life and hope and a future?

Recently, there was a four-page newsletter ‘Across the Regions’ in local newspapers promoting government policies and your achievements. I understand taxpayer-funded electoral expenses pay for this. Any contesting party could never financially match this thinlydisguised political advertising, delivered in the midst of an election campaign. Where is the level playing field in the political process? Is this a fair go for the future of democracy?

The Editor , in response to the Family First candidate, may I offer the comment that I remember Labor’s L-A-W tax cuts which were promised and then abolished as fuel taxes sky rocketed and sales tax were raised.

The Coalition Government has created the strongest tax reform in my working life ensuring that 80 per cent of wage earners pay no more than 30 cents/in the $1 income tax!

The value of housing is seen as a positive by many and the lower interest rates and stronger economy which strengthen real wages are seen as opportunities rather than negatives by most.

The new home–owners grant has been accepted by a community which sees the value of owning their own homes.

Telstra has been effectively a private corporation since 1991 under Labor legislation and the Howard government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on regional telecommunications infrastructure.

There have been very significant improvements from the Coalition for regional students over the past eight years and we will continue to make progress on this issue.

The Howard Government has taken strong action to stamp out the tragic practice of people smuggling, where many people have died in the belief that the journey was worth the risk.

There are no children currently in detention that have not been offered an alternative. In fact, I believe only two children remain in the Baxter Detention Centre with their parents. The vast majority of ‘boat people’ – more than 9000 - are currently living in the community on temporary protection visas.

In an area 1000 kilometres by 1000 kilometres ‘Across the Regions’ is the best way I can communicate with people as their MP, and I am very grateful for that opportunity.

I believe I have given every constituent in Grey a “fair go” to the best of my ability since being elected in March 1993, and in the preceding 14 months (and two second-hand Falcons!) as a full-time candidate for Grey.

GREY...On October 9, residents throughout Grey will be asked to vote for their chosen electoral representative in the House of Representatives, as well as the state’s representatives in the Senate.

Traditionally, Members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Representatives are expected to represent the needs and wants of their individual electorate populations.

This year, Grey voters will have more candidates to choose from than ever before.

A total of seven candidates will represent a variety of political parties in the October 9 election.

MARKETS...Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association hosted a community market on Saturday. Selling their wares at the stalls were, clockwise, from left; Rosa and Steve Springer displaying their Andamooka Opal; Tim and Bron West of Andamooka’s ‘Cutting Edge Opal’ and; Vanessa Hill of Equilibrium applying a temporary tattoo to Dave Bowd. The markets had been planned in cooperation with a Friday night community barbecue which, unfortunately, was cancelled due to local rains. Around six stall holders - including gift, hobby and clothings stalls - were present at the markets which, this year, superseded the annual Opal Festival. The markets were followed by a community barbecue.

Roxby Downs community members have answered the call to join a Blue Light Disco committee.

While Grey voters will recognise their local candidates for the House of Representatives, Senate candidates may be a little less well-known.

Voters will be asked to choose from almost 50 Senate candidates on October 9.

In cooperation with local police, a handful of parents will help organise Blue Light Discos – supervised smoke, alcohol and drug-free social events – for local youth.

The Senate has long been considered ‘the States’ house’ where Senators represent the wider needs of the state as a whole.

Each state, regardless of population, will field the same number of senators in the upper house.

Polling booths open at 8am and close at 6pm.

Voting is compulsory for Australian residents 18 years and over.

Roads to Recovery- An additional $52 million allocated for the upgrade of local roads in Grey (2000-08) An additional $26.25 million for South Australia’s councils over three years to address current disadvantages in local road funding.

AusLink- South Australia will receive an 111% increase in construction funds for the National Network.

The Federal Coalition Government will provide an additional $11million to unincorporated areas throughout South Australia to upgrade local roads from 2005 to 2008.

Black Spots Safety Program- The Coalition has spent $2.3 million on black spots throughout Grey including the Yorke Peninsula since coming to government.

Pedestrian crossing plans BIRDSVILLE…More than 100 people arrived in Birdsville at the weekend as part of the Simpson Desert Cycling Challenge. The five-day event – considered by many to be Australia’s toughest mountain bike race – started in Purni Bore, SA, and came to a finish in Birdsville.

LEIGH CREEK…Leigh Creek attracted huge crowds for one of the state’s most unusual fishing competitions at the long weekend. Competitors were fishing for carp at the isolated Leigh Creek Lake.

ROXBY DOWNS…Community radio station 105.5 RoxFm was represented at the recent South Australian Community Broadcasters Association. Local DJs and committee representatives Geoff and Wendy Osborne attended the conference in Adelaide during August with other community broadcasters from across the state.

PORT AUGUSTA…Aboriginal prisoners at Port Augusta Prison will now be able to attend funerals in Far North communities under the supervision of recognised local people. Four Far North communities – the Mimili, Kaltjiti (Fregon), Pukatja (Ernabella) and Iwantja (Indulkna) – have joined the agreement which will see volunteers trained as community ‘supervisors’ to ensure the security of prisoners on leave from the prison to attend funerals in their home-lands. This is the first agreement of its kind in Australia and comes as a result of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

ROXBY DOWNS...It seems that flooded yards, fallen tree limbs and runaway dogs are not the only dangers of thunderstorms. Following last week’s spectacular rainfall, TripleJ radio has become temporarily unavailable in Roxby Downs due to a damaged repeater. The repeater, responsible for catching and ‘bouncing’ the signal to Roxby Downs, was completely destroyed when struck by lightning around midday last Thursday. Roxby Downs Council is currently attempting to replace the repeater but it is thought that repairs will take at least another week.

Far North regional police report A report was received from an Olympic Dam resident of a stolen vehicle on October 3, 2004.

A white Holden Commodore was stolen from Olympic Dam and dumped on the Borefield road.

The vehicle suffered mechanical problems and caught alight.

On October 3, 2004, a 26-year-old man was reported for driving and unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

An 18-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol 0.124 per cent, driving whilst suspended and driving contrary to a defect on October 1, 2004.

A report of assault was received from a Roxby Downs resident on October 1, 2004. The assault occurred in Olympic Dam. A report of property damage was received on September 30, 2004, from a business at Olympic Dam where pipes to basins in a toilet block were damaged.

Motorists are warned that during school holidays the mobile RBT legislation allows police to stop any vehicle being driven on a road and breath-test the driver.

Motorists can be assured that police state-wide will be targeting vehicles coming and going from known drink driving ‘hot spots’.

Roxby Downs Police attended at a fatal motor vehicle roll over 5km east of Kingoonya on September 24, 2004. A 55-year-old man, local to the area, was found deceased at the accident scene by passers by.

From initial investigations it appears that the man was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle.

Local Police can not stress highly enough the importance of wearing seatbelts.

A 28-year-old man from Miranda in NSW was arrested on September 22, 2004 for assaulting another person in the Roxby Downs CBD. Police refused bail and he was conveyed to Port Augusta where he appeared before Court on September 23, 2004.

The theft of a data projector and three computers from the Olympic Dam Mine Smelter Training Room was reported on September 21, 2004. These items are valued at more than $8,000 and are believed

to have been stolen between September 3 and 7, 2004. Anyone with information concerning these items should contact the Roxby downs Police Station on 8671 0370.

The theft during August 2004 of four plants valued at approximately $100 each, from a vacant property on Gregory St was reported on September 20, 2004. At the time of the offence, the property was vacant and about to be sold to new owners.

More recently, six garden lights were reported stolen from a property in Irrapatana St. Irrapatana St seems to be getting a lot of attention for minor thefts of garden ornaments etc of late and local residents are asked to pay particular attention to persons acting suspiciously in the area.

During the week, a local resident advised the Police Station about the following ‘scam’. The resident received a telephone call from a male claiming to be ‘Vino’ from the Westpac Bank and wishing to confirm the persons Internet Banking details. This is quite a common ‘scam’ which comes in a variety of guises. The basis of all of them is that the caller is attempting to obtain the victim’s banking details. All Australian banks advise that they never solicit a person’s banking details over the telephone. Anyone receiving similar telephone calls should contact their bank and local police to report the matter.

A busy field trip for local nature-lovers STUART CREEK…A group of Roxby Downs families visited the Stuart Creek as part of an Outback Field Naturalists field trip last week.

A small group of local nature-lovers took a canoe and headed to Stuart Creek Station – around 150km north of Roxby Downs - to an isolated water hole on the creek and camped for the weekend of October 18 and 19.

“We did a comprehensive bird survey, some small mammal trapping, swimming, canoing and bushwalks,” Field Nats coordinator Bree Galbraith told The Monitor.

“We also took advantage of the open night sky for an astrology session.

“We had a lovely relaxing time, caught some fish, and just enjoyed the local nature.”

“We managed to find a Wedge-Tail Eagle nest with chicks which was very exciting – you just don’t get to see them very often.

“We also saw lots of birds because the country’s in such good condition at the moment.

“There was heaps of wildflowers out - because of previous rains - that we could identify and take advantage of.”

The ‘Field Nats’ has been designed to give local residents a chance to experience the region’s environment in an education and responsible manner with people who are experienced in ecology, learning more about their natural environment and spend time with like-minded people.

“The Field Nats is a forum for people to get together and do what they love doing, and learn more if they can,” Ms Galbraith said.

Golf green vandals ROXBY DOWNS…Police are warning “hoon drivers and vandals” to be prepared to face charges following a series of driver-related damages to the Roxby Downs Golf Course greens.

“Such behaviour is criminal damage and anyone caught in the act can wind up with a fine and a criminal record,” Sgt Richard Hobbs told The Monitor last week.

“If found causing criminal damage, a person can be made responsible for the cost of repair for property damaged – and in most cases that doesn’t come cheap.”

Sgt Hobbs said police would be keeping a tight watch on the golf club this Summer and would pay close attention to any vehicles on the grounds.

“We are aware that this is a regular problem as with the main street and T-junctions just out of town,” he said.

“Residents can also help by reporting incidents to police, as soon as they occur.”

Roxby Downs Golf Club president Don Crawford also asked for the community’s support.

“Four greens have been driven on in as many months,” Mr Crawford said.

“It is completely inconsiderate and has been impacting on a lot of other people’s pleasure,” he said.

“I’d ask anyone with information about the people responsible for the damage to alert police.”

ON THE ROAD AGAIN...

Graham Blatchford extends a lifeline to drivers throughout the Far North Region as RAA support to one of SA’s largest RAA areas.

Each day, Graham Blatchford’s work can take him from his Pimba home to Bon Bon Homestead 150km north of Glendambo, north-west to Tarcoola, south-east to Bookaloo or south-west to Wirrulla.

But according to Mr Blatchford, that’s just the way it is in the life of an RAA repairman.

Covering one of SA’s largest RAA areas, Mr Blatchford has a remarkable responsibility.

He also has only one arm.

Born with his left arm missing from the elbow, Mr Blatchford said he has never missed what he never had.

“I learnt to do everything just like everyone else,” Mr Blatchford said.

“It often took me longer but so long as I kept my cool I could do anything.

“And when people said I couldn’t do something, it just gave me the determination to do it.”

And so it was when Mr Blatchford began his apprenticeship as a mechanic 47 years ago.

“Some people said I’d never be able to do, so here I am,” he said.

“I don’t need any special equipment and I drive a standard fivespeed manual.

“I think it surprises a few people

to see a one-armed RAA repairman, but when they’re stranded in the outback I don’t think they care that it might take you a little longer than it might take someone else to get them back on the road.”

For four-and-a-half years Mr Blatchford has travelled outback SA helping stranded motorists.

Over the years he’s encountered things he finds more unusual than a one-armed mechanic.

“A while ago I rescued a T-model Ford on the other side of Glendambo,” he said.

“And I’ve met a few weird people on the job.

“But generally people are incredibly friendly and I’ve received some nice cards and letters from appreciative customers.

“I really like helping people and the travel doesn’t bother me.”

And you’d hope that travel was a passion for Mr Blatchford – the job requires him to drive approximately 2000km each week.

“During tourist season I’ll cover about 4000km a week but it might be more or less,” he said.

However, Mrs Connell assured the community that the changes would not affect the quality of local services.

“Provision of 24-hour medical services will continue uninterrupted at Woomera Community Hospital,” she said.

“Negotiations are being finalised at present, so it is too early to name Woomeras’ new Medical Officer.”

Pathways to a pay packet Roxby Downs TAFE is calling on local employers and students to contribute their suggestions to the ‘jobs pathways program’.

TAFE will host a workshop on Tuesday, October 19, at the Dunes Café in Roxby Downs to launch its ‘school-based apprenticeship’ video and consult with local employers.

The workshop will ask employers what they are looking for when hiring youth and how parents can help their children balance school, work

and their social lives.

The workshop invitation asks participants “what part can you play in preparing students for work?”

The event will also be an opportunity for school and TAFE representatives to thank the local industry representatives who have supported training and work placement initiatives.

THE RITE STUFF Almost 30 Roxby Downs Area School students threw themselves into the RITE program during the first week of these school holidays.

Local Year 10 student Spencer Crafter-King joined the team at Outback Landscaping and told The Monitor youth reporter Verity Casserly he is “enjoying working in the community”.

“In the mornings, I am cleaning the town, after lunch, I do private jobs and heaps of other things,” Spencer told The Monitor.

When asked if this would be a possible career for him Spencer answered “hopefully”. Spencer is continuing his work placement at Outback Landscaping next term where he is “learning heaps of stuff”.

Spencer told The Monitor that RITE had offered him the opportunity to try something he hadn’t considered trying, before his placement.

In 2004, the RITE program has been shifted back a grade to Year 10s, whereas it was available only to Year 11s until now.

“RITE is a good idea definitely, because learning work skills at a younger age will help you be more professional at an older age,” Spencer said about the changes.

Spencer’s advice to Year 8s and 9s is “get into it mate, go out and get your hands dirty”.

“It’s a good experience.”

“It’s ready for a bit of a spruce-up and, with so many of our clients coming from up North, we’d like them to be able to have their say on what happens.

“We’d be happy to see Roxby Downs people take some ownership of the facility through fundraising or donation of an item or two – then we could recognise that community contribution.”

As many as 300 births occur at the PAH every year. In fact, Port Augusta represents the Far North and Outback’s core medical service, where new mothers can take advantage of the many specialists at the PAH before returning to home.

Continuity of care is then guaranteed through regular regional visits by those same specialists to centres like Roxby Downs and Coober Pedy.

“Not only is Port Augusta a great opportunity for families to tap into the specialist medical services on offer, but while the family is staying down with mum there are other community services like childcare, playgroups and libraries available,” Mrs Boles said.

New home for Tammar Wallabies Country

INNES NATIONAL PARK… The Tammar Wallaby, listed as “extinct in the wild”, is about to make a reappearance at one of SA’s most pristine coastal parks.

One of South Australia’s most pristine coastal parks will soon host one of the State’s most significant environmental achievements this decade.

The SA Tammar Wallaby, listed as “extinct in the wild”, is about to make a reappearance.

Once common on the Eyre, Yorke, and Fleurieu Peninsula’s, the mainland SA Tammar was driven to extinction in the late 1920s due to land clearance and predators.

However, a population of the wallabies has been found on Kawau Island, New Zealand. Later this year, up to 20 Tammar wallabies will be trial released into Innes National Park.

The wallabies are currently at Monarto Zoological Park where they will remain as part of a captive breeding program until the planned release later this year.

A Department of Environment and Heritage Press release said the only remnants of the species in Australia were two preserved specimens held at the SA Museum.

The statement said a similar related subspecies of Tammar wallaby has survived on Kangaroo Island, however the two subspecies had been separated to 10,000 years and had developed quite distinct forms.

The SA DEH said the SA Tammar subspecies would have been lost forever

if it wasn’t for former SA Governor Sir George Grey taking some Tammars with him when he established a residency on Kawau Island in the 1860s.

The DEH and the Australian Government has now repatriated 85 Tammars from New Zealand for planned reintroduction programs.

Innes National Park is known as one of the State’s most diverse and beautiful coastal parks.

The park, located at the southern-most tip of the Yorke Peninsula, offers visitors a mix of rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, abundant wildlife and mining and seafaring Heritage.

The park includes 9200 hectares of Australian flora and fauna and spectacular coast.

Additionally, 26 shipwrecks litter the coastline and attract divers from all over the world.

The park is home to historic Inneston Village – located just five kilometres from beautiful Stenhouse Bay – a historial reminder of early gypsum mining.

A network of walking trails, which includes the Investigator Strait Maritime Heritage Trail, weave across the park, and the region offers a variety of experiences including camping, bushwalking, surfing, fishing, scubadiving and snorkelling.

HORSING AROUND…The Monitor journalist Andrea Nielsen took a shine to horse ‘Sundance’ during her threeday trek down the Oodnadatta Track as part of the Hooves and Horns cattle drive last fortnight.

Andrea on ‘the track’ The Monitor’s own ‘city girl gone country’ Andrea Nielsen joined more than 40 riders, 160 horses and 300 head of cattle on the last leg of last week’s ‘Hooves and Horns Down the Oodnadatta Track’ cattle drive. While an experienced horsewoman, the cattle drive was a real lifestyle change for Andrea. This is her story, in her own words…

The dust hangs thick, the air is muggy and the flies are persistent in their search for moisture. I’m surrounded by the familiar smell of horses and leather but this is entirely unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

It’s day one on the last leg of the Hooves and Horns cattle drive and the 30 other would-be drovers are as excited as I am. For us, the adventure began at 7.30am as we were transferred to the camp-site by bus. Most of the group are from Adelaide – the remainder come from regional South Australia or interstate. Almost everyone is an experienced rider.

Though no-one said it, it was clear none of us were certain what to expect. But the bus pulled to a stop and all of that changed. We were met by several serious-looking stockmen, 160 horses and more than 300 head of cattle. We were matched up with a horse and given a run-down on the daily schedule.

And now, here I am, plodding along down the Oodnadatta Track and taking in the scenery.

Between swiping at flies I give my horse ‘Sundance’ a pat on the neck. A beautiful chestnut who was born and bred on Elsie Station in the Northern Territory, ‘Sundance’ is clearly an old hand at this sort of work. He keeps a slow and steady pace and focuses the rest of his energy on swatting flies with his tail.

I have to admit – I don’t own a swag. I’ve never slept in one. I haven’t even camped since I was 15.

At dinner time, I down a couple of drinks from Dingo Jack’s Bar and enjoy a few laughs with the other riders and stockmen and soon enough I’m doing something I never thought I’d do – falling asleep in a swag in front of a campfire.

Now I’ve heard that these country types are up and down with the sun but I always thought that was a tall story. I knew that there was a 6am you could stay up until but I was in for a rude awakening when I discovered there is one you can get up at.

Fortunately for me – but not for the drovers who walked this track in the early 1900s – there is a warm shower to get me started. By 8am the larger part of the group is back in the saddle. Several members give their bums a rest, opting instead to take the 4WD tour.

I’m determined to continue riding but I really have to hand it to the drovers. They’ve been on the track for nearly three weeks now. They’re up and on horseback before the other riders, take fewer breaks and are always the last to set foot on the ground. There’s not much talk from their end – they’re here to work. Still, each of them is quick to tell you that he wouldn’t trade his line of work for anything.

Day two winds to an end, bringing us to the last day of our adventure. I notice ‘Sundance’ has picked up his pace a little. In fact, all the horses have. I think they’ve sensed how close we are to the end of our journey.

By lunchtime, the William Creek Hotel is almost in sight.

The cattle start getting restless and the horses are a little more skittish. We wind up a little early and begin the final trek into town. It’s about now I really start thinking about what an experience the drive has been. It must have been a peaceful life for the drovers travelling these tracks. A hard one, but tranquil nonetheless.

That’s not to say I envy it.

I’ve loved the journey and the chance to get away and try something new. But I’m a city girl. Petty though it may seem, I value warm shower, a toilet, a comfortable bed and sleeping in. Still, not many city girls get this kind of opportunity and I know I’ll be the first to join the next Hooves and Horns Cattle Drive when it rolls around next year.

So we ride back into town, pen the horses and get them unsaddled. I give ‘Sundance’ one last pat, thank the drovers and head to the pub.

It’s definitely time for a beer.

More than 1200 people converged on William Creek on September 24 and 25 as the town hosted its campdrafting competition and the Australian National Bronco Branding Championships.

Spectators came from across the Far North region, the state, Australia and even from overseas to watch entrants compete for range of valuable prizes.

The crowd was boosted by a number of out-oftowners who opted to stay in town following their return from the Hooves and Horns cattle drive.

The William Creek Campdraft was held on the Friday with spectators emerging from 8am to see the under 13s compete in the junior division.

The youngsters quickly showed their ability, cutting and guiding their individual steers with obvious experience.

Scores – based on course completion, time taken, control of the steer and horsemanship – reflected the quality of competitors.

Ultimately, the event was one by the weekend’s youngest competitor, Sally Halstead of Moorabree Station, with 21 points on ‘Checky’.

Next to hit the yards were competitors in the maiden division.

Entry to the division was open to senior competitors who have not won a campdrafting event.

Competition was no less fierce with entrants determined to stake their claim on the first place prize, a $2500 stock saddle, and make their move to the open division.

Andrew Clarke of Allendale Station made a number of impressive runs of the course taking the title with 159 points on ‘Charlotta’.

Competitors in the open division hit the yards by early afternoon.

The group’s experience was obvious as some of the more head-strong steers were cut to run the course.

Their horsemanship was impressive with competitors carefully droving stubborn steers around the pegs and, for the lucky ones, through the gate.

Experience finally proved the key for Peter Maroney of Wertaloona Station who scored 154.5 points on ‘Becky’, gaining him the $2500 Paul Kent stock saddle.

Another highlight of the day was the Adelaide Galvanising Saddlebronc competition which attracted more than 20 competitors from across the region.

One notable exception – where a horse completely failed to buck – resulted in a re-ride clearance from judges.

Several riders made it past the eight second mark, making their place in the finals.

Finals consisted of two rides with an aggregate score being added to their original score.

The best bucking horses were chosen for the finals, guaranteeing the audience an impressive display.

Despite a number of impressive performances, Adam Litchfield of Wilpoorinna Station took home the prize following a breath-taking final ride.

Competition then moved to the William Crek and Districts Steer Ride which attracted a field of young riders, many of which competed in the saddlebronc.

The steers were equally determined to rid themselves of their riders, though generally more successful than the horses.

A small field made it to finals but it was Charlie Webb from Hawker who clung to the top spot with 60 points.

Saturday’s bronco branding event made an early start with the the Landmark Open Singles Bronco Branding competition beginning at 8.30am.

Competitors took the yard in teams of four with the goal of catching, roping and branding three unmarked steers in the quickest time possible.

Teams had varying degrees of luck in roping animals though few were disqualified for failing to catch their first steer in the prescribed time.

A number of benchmarks were set throughout the day with several times reaching under the threeminute mark.

Eventually it was catcher Peter Kleinschmidt and his ground team T and M Bischel and Nick Francis who won the title with an aggregate time of 6:21.05.

The Eyre Auto Group Novice Catcher event followed and was won by Adam Litchfield’s team with an aggregate time of 3:31.55.

Competition stepped up a pace in the early afternoon as another catcher was added to each team for the Australian Sattelite Services Doubles Championship Bronco Branding event.

The workload doubled for ground crews who were responsible for roping, subduing, branding and releasing steers.

The two catchers worked simultaneously as they raced to catch five unmarked steers, often having to wait before leading their catches to the exhausted ground crew.

Competition continued throughout the afternoon and crowds continued to throw their support behind local teams.

Ultimately it was locals who came good with Eddie Nunn and Gordon Warren’s team from Macumba Station taking the title of Australian National Double Bronco Branding Champions with an aggregate time of 6:55.77.

Presentations, a community dinner and fundraising auction for the RFDS followed the weekend’s events.

William Creek’s next big event will be the William Creek Gymkhanaon March 19 and 20 of next year.

Andamooka Roos celebrate season’s end The Andamooka Football club hosted its presentation dinner this month at the Roxby Downs Tavern, and a good time was had all round, with some well-deserved results for some well deserving players.

The team’s vice-captain, Darren Semmler was named “Best and Fairest” for the 2004 season.

Runner-up was Ben Kotzer, with our very own “Shazza”, aka Shannon Fitzgerald, coming third.

Congratulations to Darren, Ben and Shazza, and all the other winners on the night who were awarded trophies.

Awards on the night went to: Best Under 21 – Stuart Ferenci; Best Team Man – Rob Kraack; Best Backman – Travis Pyecroft; Players Player – Shannon ‘Shazza’ Fitzgerald; President’s Cup – Stuart Ferenci; Battler of the Year – Courtney ‘Cordo’ Phelps; Coach’s Award – Matt Toohey; Most Improved – Andrew Carter; Best Utility – Shannon ‘Shazza’ Fitzgerald; Most Consistent – Shannon ‘Shazza’ Fitzgerald; Leading Goal Kicker – Kitt Williams; Footy Trip Award – Darren Semmler; and last but not least, Club Person of the Year – Ray Trezise.

John Wilby, who has tirelessly given years of support and sponsorship to the club, was awarded a Life Membership into the club.

Players celebrating 50 games with the club this season were Darren Semmler, Sam Hall and Shane Dolphin.

Thankyou to all the volunteers who helped out in the bar and the canteen throughout the year, and to BJ for handling all the merchandise side of things.

To all the water boys, and to Josh Taubers for timekeeping, a very big thankyou to you all for all your great help and support throughout the season.

The Club had on display for the first time, it’s ‘Honour Boards’ made by local Andamooka resident Harry D’Aloia, with a huge “thankyou” to Harry for a fabulous design, and a great job on creating the boards.

All the boards’ info was put together by Therese and Kathy, and a big thankyou to the two of you, for all the work you put in, to get the boards done. The boards are in Andamooka, awaiting their final resting place.

The club said a very sad goodbye to some of its “true legends” this year.

Andy Ingold left the club a few weeks back, with new work prospects taking him off to greener pastures, where we hope he is happy and successful, and we wish him well. A farewell was held for Andy at the Tuckerbox Restaurant a couple of months ago, where he was farewelled by the boys in true Andamooka style.

We also lost Dwayne ‘Dwayno’Grantham, a very no-nonsense straight-down-the-line player, who has been with the Roos since 1995, and who the club will miss enormously.

We wish Dwayno and his family all the best and hope to see him around from time to time.

Pat Taylor, who had been with the club for many years, and who played a huge part in the boys wonderful premiership win last year, also said goodbye this year, as he and his family left Roxby Downs.

Once again, Pat was farewelled at the Tuckerbox Restaurant by the club, and we wish Pat

and his family all the best.

Another huge loss for the club this year is Annie Uhlik, who has decided to retire after eight incredible and long serving years to the club as its treasurer.

No club could exist without the players, and its thanks to the wonderful characters that have played for us in the past and to those with us now and to those who will be playing for us in the future, that we have such a strong and supportive group of supporters, sponsors, members and volunteers alike who make it possible for the club to survive Thankyou! Horses and horsepower at Glendambo GLENDAMBO…Horses and horsepower will be the focus of the day at the 21st annual Kingoonya Amateur Picnic Race Club Race Meeting, held in Glendambo on October 9.

Beginning at 9am, the day will feature three first division and two second division horse races and a range of gymkhana events.

Motorbike events will include the clover barrel, bending, thread the needle and Gretna green races as well as a mono competition.

But the feature of the day will be the DR Rankin Memorial Kingoonya Cup which boasts $2500 in prize money in addition to the cup and winning jockey trophy.

The cup honours the late Darrell Rankin, life member and long-time patron of Kingoonya Amateur Picnic Race Club. Mr Rankin was passion-

ate about bush racing, owning and training many of his own horses.

Long-affiliated with Tarcoola and Kingoonya races – and later Glendambo – Mr Rankin continued to support outback race meetings until his death on December 19 last year.

The race day will conclude with an evening dance and live music by ‘Redback Revival’.

Admission to the dance will be $10 per head and includes supper. Admission to the course will be $5 but free to anyone under 13.

Camping facilities will be available at the race course and hotel and motel facilities available in Glendambo.

With the Federal election taking place on the same day, a mobile polling booth has been organised and will operate at Glendambo Town Hall from 1pm to 5pm.

Roxby Downs golfing report On Saturday, October 2, a small field took to the golf course for a game of Stableford.

The greens had been aerated and topdressed three weeks ago, and the rain last Thursday was most welcome and timely.

The rain left the greens well-soaked but not dry enough for the first mow since top dressing thus leaving the greens almost longer than the fairways.

The rest of the course is looking good with many of the fairways now having a substantial covering of grass.

Brenton Waye thought the course was perfect as he took to it and returning a score of 47 points. Brenton said that the score could have been better if some of his putts had dropped.

The handicapper took three strokes off Brenton’s handicap for his efforts. The Div I winner was Ralph Johnson with 35 points. Ralph had a good day overall taking out both Long Drive and Nearest the Pin for Division 1 as well. Division 2 went to Geoff ‘Potsy’ Darling with his best score of the season of 39 points. Potsy’s round was very lopsided with 14 points on the front nine then roaring home with 25 points on the back nine.

Saturday, September 25, 2004 was a Stableford event, which was sponsored by the Roxby Tavern. Very warm conditions and plenty of flies still didn’t stop some excellent scores. Freshly aerated and topped-dressed greens which made putting very hard, still didn’t seem

to faze some players.

Simon Gray carried on last week’s good form and had 44 pts along with Scott Bray also with 44 pts. Butch Richards was close on their heels with 43 pts.

Overall Winner - Simon Gray with 44 pts on a count back from Scott Bray.

Div 1 - Scott Bray with 44 pts. Div 2 Butch Richards with 43 pts.

In conjunction, the ladies also held their Silver Spoon event which was won by Di Beveridge with 33 pts.

Sunday September 26 was a nine-hole Stableford event with two players having a good day. The winner was Craig Nichols with 21 pts on a count back from Zane West who was runner-up on 21 pts.

This weekend Meyers Engineering sponsor the Monthly Medal 18 Holes stroke which will also be the 11th round of Championships.

Tee-off will be from 9–10 am. Any early starters should contact match to arrange.

Meyers will hold a Trade Night at the golf club on Friday October 8, 2004 starting at 6.00 pm.

On target at Andamooka SHOOTERS...The next round of clay shooting at Andamooka Sports Shooting Association range will be held on October 10, 2004 at 1pm.

Cricket set to start Rogues and Wanderers are scheduled to contest the first match of the new Roxby Districts cricket season when they meet at Roxby Downs Oval on October 16th at 830 am while Woomera plays host to Olympic Dam. The Grand Final set down for March 12th follows a minor round of fifteen matches and the Qualifying Final between the second and third placed teams to decide who meets the minor premier for the flag.

At the recent Annual General Meeting Association president Tony Richter, secretary Darren Leonard and treasurer Andy Bennett all accepted nominations to continue and were re-elected unopposed.

Playing conditions for days of excessive heat will be discussed at a delegates meeting to be held before the season commences and will appear on the program when it becomes available.

All teams have indicated that they are ready for the season with Rogues and Woomera looking to consolidate and challenge the hold that Wanderers and Olympic Dam appear to have on the competition.
