A call for more commercial land ROXBY DOWNS…The Roxby Downs Business Forum is keen to gauge interest for commercial and industrial land in Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam. The newly-formed forum has already highlighted a perceived need for more commercial development space in the region, and is now seeking additional information from the wider community.

“There is no commercial land available in town currently - this impacts on existing businesses, both in terms of competition and expansion opportunities,” Roxby Downs economic development officer Alex Barker told The Monitor.

“There is also demand from outside investors who want to set up businesses in town – but we want to gauge just how much land would be required?”

Business forum chairman Mark Beenham believes there is a strong local demand for commercial land.

“I’m looking for more commercial land myself right now, and I know of at least four other businesses seeking light industrial-zoned land,” he told The Monitor. “The growth of the town has prompted local businesses to grow – hence the demand for more land.

“If we don’t offer businesses the opportunity to grow, we can’t keep up the service the town needs. Locallybased businesses mean better value and better service for the customers. This is a key issue already, in this very new business forum.”

Wayne Lawson of Raine and Horne Real Estate – managers of the Tutop St development, due to open doors in January next year – said the demand for commercial land stretches beyond the current, locally-based businesses.

“We’ve had a lot of interest over the past few months for industrial land as well as retail premises,” he told The Monitor. “I believe the town needs to plan for the future, to bring more businesses into town as the community grows. Just in Tutop St, alone, we’re having no trouble filling our offices.”

BHP Billiton is expected to address the issue of local industrial land development at the upcoming business forum meeting on October 17, 2005.

Vet clinic fire ROXBY DOWNS…Local emergency services attended a fire in the Roxby Downs Veterinary Clinic at around 7.30pm on Monday, October 10, 2005.

Country Fire Service volunteers worked alongside Olympic Dam Emergency Services Officers to control the fire and rescue animals from the premises.

The fire was suppressed by 10.36pm that evening, but only some of the clinic’s animals survived.

The business suffered extensive damage, with adjoining businesses also smoke-affected.

Investigations are under way this week by fire investigators from SA Police and the Adelaide Metropolitan Fire Service, to isolate the cause of the fire.

Roxby Downs CFS captain Brett Atkins congratulated the local emergency services on their prompt response to the emergency.

“Emergency services work very closely together in Roxby Downs in any emergency, and we’d really like to thank the ESOs, SES, SA Ambulance Service and the police for their support,” Mr Atkins told The Monitor.

Cat ban story just ‘sensational journalism’ To the community of Roxby Downs, The article in The Sunday Mail (2/10/2005)

by Elissa Doherty proclaiming that Roxby wants cats outlawed, is just “poorly-researched sensational journalism that bears little resemblance to reality,” says Roxby Downs Vet Dr Andrew Melville-Smith.

“The journalist, Elissa Doherty, has just taken a fringe view to get a sensational story.”

He says there is little support in Roxby Downs for banning cat ownership but most people would favour tougher controls on cat ownership. Elissa Doherty admits as much in her article but she doesn’t let this get in the way of a good attention grabbing headline.

Dr Melville-Smith feels that even if a ban were implemented, it would be almost impossible to enforce and would make little difference, as the feral cat population is well established in this area of SA. The Roxby Downs veterinary clinic staff believe that all cats should be registered, neutered, microchipped and kept on their owner’s property or under the owner’s control at all times.

Dr. Melville-Smith said this had been discussed with (Town Administrator) Bill Boehm of the Roxby Downs Council and whilst he appeared sympathetic to this idea, the impression he gave him was that community support is not there and that there were funding issues for the council.

Dr Melville-Smith said he was very disappointed that Elissa Doherty did not take the time to interview the most important per-

son in cat control - John Hill, Minister for Conservation and Environment. “He had the opportunity to introduce laws last year during the review of the dog and cat management act that could have really made a difference to cat ownership and the stray cat population, he said. “But the Minister chose to do nothing and as a result, South Australia now lags behind other states when it comes to cat control.”

He says there are a number of ways the residents of Roxby Downs could start to manage the feral cat population: • Pressure BHP Billiton to provide free neutering and microchipping for all cats where the owner pays rates or rent in Roxby Downs/Olympic Dam. • Pressure the Roxby Downs Council to introduce a by-law to make it compulsory to register and microchip cats kept in Roxby Downs. Like dogs, they could offer a substantial discount for neutered cats and fine the owners of those found wandering the streets.

• All cats should be neutered at six months of age.

• Never give away kittens. Free kittens have a high incidence of not being desexed and contributing to the feral cat population. Surrender them to the council, RSPCA or a veterinary clinic.

• Don’t feed stray cats or leave food scraps around that stray cats could find.

• Keep your cat inside or in an enclosed cat run.

Who made BHP Billiton the ‘Sheriff of Fair’?

Who decided that it was this single (admittedly vast) business’s job to keep everyone in Olympic Dam, Roxby Downs, Andamooka and even Woomera happy?

Why is it BHP Billiton’s job to ensure your rent is low, your vegetable quality is high and that you get a free showbag at the Christmas pageant each year?

Where does this welfare mentality come from in a community that makes so much bloody money?

One of the big issues is young people travelling out of Roxby Downs for schooling and the financial support offered to these families through BHP Billiton. Some people argue that this money could be better spent on local schools, RDAS in particular, enticing more of those students to stay at home and, therefore, attracting more funding and better facilities all over again.

Some people argue that it’s not ‘fair’ that only BHP Billiton employees get that benefit.

I’d agree it’s not ‘fair’ that BHP Billiton families with children who stay and children who go, are supported differently…but isn’t that an issue that should be taken up internally? We don’t tell other businesses what fringe benefits they’re allowed to offer their employees.

On that same scale, I don’t see anyone condemning the parents who choose St Barbara’s over RDAS, or RDAS over Andamooka Primary School. So what does it matter if the ‘other’ school parents choice is further away?

How these businesses choose to support the community is up to them - and if you’re unhappy with how they spend their money in the community why aren’t you saying something to them? There are forums, school boards, youth consultancies and youth services all screaming out for people to join up and have a say!

This ‘not fair’ mentality seems to be a hangover from a time when WMC ruled Roxby Downs with an iron (or copper) fist. Now we’re halfway between a company town and an independent town, where people ask me “where’s our elected town board” but others still want their handout from Olympic Dam, despite being part of SA’s second-richest postcode.

It is in the company’s best interests to support local schooling to ensure it maintains the highest standards, therefore attracting employees with families. I’d like to see BHP Billiton support local students by financing extra tutoring in the senior school, or maybe housing for teachers - something that would benefit students in the long run.

Most of all, in my Utopian Roxby Downs, I’d like to see employees at Olympic Dam receive financial support from BHP Billiton to spend one day a month in local schools, reading with students and complementing teachers’ existing programs.

Call it a paid day-in-lieu. To me, this ‘Dad’s day off of work’ is a great idea, and has already been successful in some small Qld communities. BHP Billiton gives a little, parents give a little, and the school and community benefits a lot – what could be ‘fairer’ than that?

Making new residents welcome Teaching old bilbies new tricks BIG CITY…Elaine and Andy Nicholls recently moved to Roxby Downs from Edinburgh, Scotland, and are joined by their pet dog Benji the only Australianborn member of the family. Coming from a city of almost half a million to a small Outback town took some getting used to. “The biggest culture shock was flying over and looking out the window at miles and miles of sand and then the town just popped up out of the desert,” Elaine told The Monitor. “We were packing up from one side of the world and coming here and we weren’t sure of silly things like how to get the power on. We

rented our first house over the email and started reading The Monitor on the web.”

ROXBY DOWNS…Local residents are working to make Roxby Downs a more welcoming community, with the introduction of a welcome program and information kit for new residents.

The need for a welcome program was highlighted during the two-year Community Plan process.

In response, Roxby Downs Council’s family and youth officer Tom Beever and community development officer Michelle Hales are developing a comprehensive ‘welcome pack’ for new residents.

This pack will be accompanied by a personal welcome, supported by a core of volunteers, according to Ms Hales.

“Integration can be very difficult for new Roxby residents, especially with people coming from all over the world and such different backgrounds,” she said.

“To build community identity, and help people connect with their own areas of interest and, therefore, stay longer in Roxby Downs, it’s very important to offer that welcome right from the start.”

For new international residents Elaine Nicholls of Edinburgh and Jane Coshutt of the Chatham Islands in the South Pacific, moving to Roxby Downs posed a variety of challenges.

“Of course, we can put the processes in place but it is our employees who

make them work - it’s the staff who go out and get the job done every day.

“This award is recognition for their hard work and a real team effort.”

Many of those work connections, however, extended to Jane when partners and friends of the people who worked with Adam, took the time to introduce Jane to some of Roxby Downs’ facilities and friendly faces.

“We met people through Nippy Gym, through the kindergarten and the gym – all in all, if you’ve got kids, I think it’s easy to meet people in Roxby. Our kids are really happy now, and settled. I’m surprised now, when I walk down the street, how many people I know.

“You definitely need some solid information when you’re settling in – it was very hard to find phone numbers and times for things like kindergarten or the doctors. The internet was a really important resource, especially for internationals like us because you can’t just ring someone up and ask.”

Elaine and husband Andy also got their first glimpse of Roxby Downs on the web. “Before we came, I was on the roxbydowns.com website where I got a lot of information about the town, and a lot of background and we got a glimpse of the town through The Monitor online.

“Without that web information we wouldn’t even have known how to get a house in Roxby Downs – whether we should rent or buy or stay in the caravan park?

“But when we got here, people were really good – pretty friendly,” she told The Monitor.

SMALL TOWN…J ane Coshutt, Nyah, 4, and Lily, 2, moved to Roxby Downs recently with partner and dad Adam Bester from the Chatham Islands - a small island community of around 700 people in the South Pacific Ocean. “For us, Roxby Downs seemed huge. We just weren’t used to having neighbours and not knowing every face in the street,” Ms Coshutt said. “We’ve found Roxby Downs very welcoming but you’ve got to make the effort to get out and meet people.”

OLYMPIC DAM…Scientists at the Arid Recovery Reserve near Olympic Dam are teaching old bilbies new tricks. Over the past three months, researchers at the Arid Recovery Reserve have been studying the behaviour of re-introduced bilbies to see if they can be trained to avoid cats.

The project comes in response to last year’s bilby release outside the reserve, when many of them were killed by feral cats. A small number of the bilbies survived, prompting Arid Recovery’s researchers to wonder whether the surviving bilbies were somehow “smarter”.

Predator training involved capturing the bilbies and exposing them to cat scent, teaching them to associate cats with an unpleasant experience.

“We have had some very interesting results,” Arid Recovery research student Amber Cameron told The Monitor. “The trained bilbies behaved very differently to the untrained bilbies.” “Only the trained animals moved burrows when I sprayed cat scent at their burrow entrances. The trained bilbies also used burrows with more entrances, changed burrows more frequently and moved greater distances compared to the control animals during the study.”

Arid Recovery plans to compare the survival of trained and untrained bilbies outside the reserve as the next step in their goal of safely re-establishing native animals in the region.

Far North and Outback regional police report FAR NORTH & OUTBACK…Minor property damage was reported to police by the Roxby Downs TAFE on September 9, 2005.

The TAFE suffered a series of damaged windows after unknown persons threw rocks at the building.

Three local motorists received on the spot fines for speeding offences on September 28, 2005. Roxby Downs Police are warning drivers that they now have permanent use of mobile and static speed detection devices. “Excessive speed is a common factor in many vehicle collisions in the Far North and we will use the latest technology to protect you from dangerous drivers,” Sgt Richard Hobbs told The Monitor.

Police recovered a bicycle stolen from a local school, returning it to the owner on September 29. Police have a suspect in relation to this matter and are expected to take action.

Roxby Downs Police attended a house party in Pioneer Drive on September 30, 2005, that had become violent. A juvenile female sustained substantial injuries as a result of being assaulted. Police have identified an offender and are pursuing the matter. Police encourage local residents to provide sufficient adult supervision at house parties. “Excessive drink-

ing by large numbers of youths can lead to behavioural problems that can quickly get out of control,” Sgt Hobbs said.

Roxby Downs Police conveyed numerous youths to their home addresses after disturbances in the area of Lions Park on the same evening. While the youths conveyed home were not committing offences, parents seemed grateful that police were concerned for the welfare of kids as young as 14 who were out and about in the early hours.

“As I explained to several parents, their child may have been doing nothing wrong but I have just stopped several intoxicated adults fighting nearby. Where are your children? Something for us all to think about,” Sgt Hobbs told The Monitor.

Minor property damages to and near the Roxby Tavern were reported to police on October 1, 2005, with suspects located and the matters resolved. Property damage was also reported when unknown persons threw rocks, smashing a door at the Roxby Downs Area School.

was injured.

Also on October 4, 2005, two motorists received on the spot fines for speeding.

Roxby Downs Police attended a vehicle rollover on the Borefield Track on October 7, 2005. Three children in the vehicle were injured and subsequently flown to the Woman’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide by the RFDS. The children are expected to recover from their injuries.

Roxby Downs Police also attended a house break-in at Burgoyne Street on October 7, 2005. The house had been searched through, however, nothing was reported stolen.

Roxby Downs Police assisted in providing a police presence for the Glendambo Races on October 8, 2005. The event was enjoyed by those attending with no problems reported.

Locally a youth was reported when he was found in possession of a quantity of alcohol he was taking to a party in one of the local parks.

Roxby Downs Police are investigating a series of theft-related incidents. The victim in this matter is the local Woolworths Store, the matter involves a small number of staff and locals. Police enquiries are continuing.

On October 3, 2005, a Roxby Downs resident reported that his vehicle had been ‘key scratched’ causing about $1500 damage.

Roxby Downs Police are investigating a series of house breaks in the Hermit Street area.

A substantial amount of jewellery, computer and electrical goods have been stolen. Police have recovered some of the stolen property and are continuing investigations into the incidents. Anyone with information they think could be useful to us regarding these matters is encouraged to contact police.

A woman reported her purse and contents stolen while at local licensed premises on October 4, 2005.

On the same day, in an unrelated matter, police and CFS members attended a vehicle fire on Olympic Way. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault and no-one

A 27-year-old Roxby Downs man pleaded guilty to common assault after attacking another Roxby Downs man on their mutual way home from local licensed premises late last year. Court heard the accused then following the victim down the street, tearing his shirt and punching him repeatedly. “Assault is a serious matter,” Mr Kitchin told the court. “It’s an offence for which you can be imprisoned…in your case, intoxication is an explanation but not an excuse.” Mr Kitchin warned the man to “reassess your drinking arrangements if alcohol means you get into situations like this”. The man was fined $350 with court costs and ordered to pay $116 compensation to the victim for medical expenses.

Five police officers were required to restrain a 25year-old Adelaide man, formerly of Roxby Downs, after he was ejected from local licensed premises in September, 2005. Court heard that, after being involved in a fight on the dance floor, the man continued to argue with crowd controllers, refusing to leave the premises until police were called to assist. The man pleaded guilty and was fined $300 with court costs.

A 22-year-old Roxby Downs man who pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour after being ejected from local licensed premises was fined $200 with courts costs in Roxby Downs Magistrates Court last month. Court heard how the man abused crowd controllers, banged on windows and slapped the aerial of a police vehicle before being arrested and detained by police.

Court heard the couple had been assured by their son that he had negotiated new parole conditions, despite being approached by local police. Mr Kitchin fined the couple after emphasising the importance guarantors play in the legal system. “It’s not unusual for you to place your faith in your son…in your case you’ve put too much faith in him and not given enough attention to your responsibilities under the Bail Act,” he said. “The obligation is not on police…it is on guarantors.” Court heard the couple has since refused to go guarantor for their son in an unrelated matter.

A 25-year-old Roxby Downs man pleaded guilty to driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle, after his details were reported to police following a carpark collision with a second vehicle in August, 2005. The man was fined $150 with court costs and disqualified from driving for two days.

Four Roxby Downs youths - aged 18, 19, 20 and 23 - were granted continued, conditional bail to appear in Port Augusta District Court on February 1, 2006, to answer a series of drug charges. Court heard that the youths will contest charges including taking part in the sale of a controlled substance, selling a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale and conspiracy.

WOOMERA…After several delays, Woomera successfully trialled Japan’s newest supersonic jet this week. The trial, originally set for September, was originally delayed for technical reasons, and again last week for weather. Project coordinators report the scale model flew and landed normally on Monday with a total flight time of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, test altitude and speed of 12km–19km and Mach 1.9 - 2.

Youth speak out ROXBY DOWNS…Local youth found themselves the centre of attention again recently, at the community launch of the BHP Billiton-funded youth development plan for Roxby Downs.

Key stakeholders in youth affairs – local police, teachers, parents and health workers – gathered together to discuss consultant Jack Wade’s findings over more than three months of community discussion.

Mr Wade heralded the workshop as “very positive”, while calling on the community to invite local youth to play a more active role in the region’s initiatives and services.

The plan highlighted a glaring lack of services and entertainment for youth aged 14 to 19 in the Roxby Downs region.

“To make things work in this community we need a joint partnership approach between government, the community, Olympic Dam, commerce and industry…and the other partner in the whole deal is young people. “I think their status has to be elevated in the whole deal so that they’re real partners, not just a group who are ‘done to’.”

However, following the plan’s launch, local teenagers have voiced their disillusion with the region’s policy-makers.

“We don’t want people telling us what we need – we want what we were promised already,” 15-year-old Brody Elson told The Monitor. “We want the skate park, and we don’t want someone taking away from what Bec [Penglase] does at the youth centre – we want the centre to be bigger and better.

Roxby Downs youth have called for more adult support at a local level for locallyinitiated services and initiatives.

“We’ve said the same thing over and over again but adults just aren’t taking us seriously.”

The youth development plan echoed local teens’ opinions, highlighting a perceived need for a more ‘respectful’ approach to youth needs from the region’s policy-makers.

Roxby Downs police, health and youth services have also voiced concerns that local teenagers are ‘tarred with the same brush’ when youth-related crime raises its ugly head in the community.

“There’s a group of maybe 20 kids getting into trouble, and more than 1800 youth in Roxby Downs,” 19-year-old youth worker Bec Penglase told The Monitor. “But there’s a feeling that just being a teenager means you’re big trouble.

“That’s just not true, and adults need to invite youth to be part of the decisions that involve them.

“That doesn’t mean putting them in adult situations – that means providing a safe, friendly forum where they can voice their concerns and ideas.

Then those ideas can be taken to council or BHP or whoever is making the decisions.”

“We don’t want people who don’t know the town telling us how we should be,” 16-year-old Emma Warren told The Monitor. “Shouldn’t we be able to make our own decisions about what we need? People need to stop talking and just get behind what’s already here, now, in town – then there really would be more for youth.”

ROXBY DOWNS… Roxby Downs Area School Year 10 students hit the local workforce last month for their first week of the Roxby Industry Training and Education (RITE) program.

The RITE program is a unique, local work experience program that places high school students into businesses to broaden their knowledge of careers and gain first hand experience in the working world.

The RITE program was first established by Western Mining Corporation in 1997 as ‘Opportunity OD’ in order to expand student opportunities on site, and give potential employees an awareness of Olympic Dam’s priorities and safety requirements.

In 1998 ‘Opportunity OD’ expanded, allowing other local businesses to host students in what then became known as the RITE program.

“Career education is very important for secondary students and the RITE program is the first step towards that,” Mrs Bennie said.

“I have had some really good feedback from students involved in the program, all of them saying they truly enjoyed it and there has been some really positive feedback from the businesses involved.”

RITE is a recognised South Australian certificate of education (SACE) subject and participants are required to finish the semester-long course with a completion of all summative tasks and good attendance in order for them to achieve the two SACE points offered.

Don’t forget to factor in the extra expenses as they will make a big difference. Government charges will hit you hardest – stamp duty, the Lands Title Office charges and mortgage duty.

Cultural creations at vacation care ROXBY DOWNS...Little Rascals Child Care Centre injected some cultural flavour into its vacation care program this month.

Participants tried their hand at Rangoli - Indian sand painting, using colour sands and pre-made sticky pattern pages.

“Lies and fibs” Almost everyone tells a lie from time to time - to avoid hurting someone’s feelings or to get out of a situation. Parents often become upset about children lying - it is important to understand the reasons before you react.

Learning about the truth It takes time for children to really understand the meaning of truth. It is not something they know from birth. (These ages are guides - each child is different). · Telling lies has no meaning for children under about 3, - they don’t understand that thinking is private.

They believe that their parents can read their minds.

A two year old in a shop may say “Why did you lose me, Mummy?” because he thinks that his mother knows where he is (even when he is out of sight). · 3 to 4 year olds are learning that other people don’t know what they are thinking. Children have strong imaginations and new knowledge and they test it out by telling ‘stories’. It is normal for them to blame someone else or make up a story. · Children in the early years of school usually want to please their parents more than they want to do the ‘right thing’, so they are less likely to tell the truth if they think it will make their parents cross. · By 8 or 9 children have some understanding of the difference between truth and fantasy. · A child’s sense of right and wrong is usually developed by about 9 or 10 years of age.

Upcoming Works...The Bushfire Prevention Committee has recently had a meeting, with changes to the CFS Act and the upgrade of the Bushfire Prevention plan to be addressed.

Council has ordered a number of replacement electricity and water meters for Axehead Road, Finniss St, Pioneer Drive, Wilaroo Street and Eyre Court – customers are advised that changeover of meters will take 10-30 minutes approximately for each meter, however, contractors will be flexible with change over times to suit individual customers. Council is expecting to change in excess of 200 meters this year and work will commence mid to late October 2005.

Completed Works...Emergency procedures exercises were held with CFS, SES and SAAS at the Town Water Supply – other exercises are planned. Excellent learning has resulted.

Weeds clean up around town water supply pump stations.

Works in Progress...Sewer Pump Stations E, F and G have been having problems with massive quantities of oil and fat causing blocking to pumps and pipe work. Council reminds residents to refrain from placing fat and oil into household drains.

Parking...Ongoing parking control action is being undertaken around town with several warning notices being issued. Residents are reminded that parking in the Richardson Place Bus Zone is restricted to buses only and that along with parking on road side verges is a traffic offence subject to the issue of Infringement Notices.

Road Closures...Will take place in the southern subdivision due to site works.

Vandalism...Council urges all residents to report instances of vandalism to the police and Council. This is your community and your rates are being wasted by these types of action so your help is essential.

Rates...Rates for the 2005/06 financial year have been declared and Rates Notices with accompanying Budget and Rate Summary Explanation have been issued. First instalment was due on 30 September 2005. A fine of 2% applies to overdue rates.

Water Accounts...Water accounts will be issued mid October and due for payment on 15 November 2005.

Electricity Accounts...Accounts for 30 September quarterly billing will be issued mid October. Please pay by the due date to avoid further action.

Dog Registrations...Dog Registrations for the 2005/ 06 financial year became due and payable from the 1 July 2005. Grace period for registrations expired on 31 August 2005. Thereafter an $80 expiation fee applies.

EDUCATION & WORKPLACE TRAINING Representatives from TAFE, the School, CEG and industry attended the inaugural meeting of the Education and Workplace Training Forum on September 27.

Shane Thomson from Career Employment Group was appointed as interim Chair and Yvonne Cloke from TAFE as interim Deputy Chair.

The meeting was well attended with a good cross section of the education industry represented, however, it was thought that there was a need to broaden representation even further.

A number of suggestions were put forward including one or two parents and people representing the retail, business and the contractor sectors to provide links with industry.

The Forum already includes a student representative from the Area School with a University career path plan.

To add balance it was suggested that a student or apprentice with a trade pathway be also invited.

During the Community Plan consultation process education in all its forms was identified as the highest priority for the community.

The interest shown from the first meeting of the Forum reflects this.

At its next meeting, to be held on October 25, the Forum will review the implementation framework of the Community plan and identify priorities.

FAMILY & YOUTH

Members of the Business Forum met on September 26 to review the implementation framework of the Community Plan.

The group discussed the various strategic actions relating to business and agreed on a set of priorities.

These will form the basis of discussion at future meetings.

One of these actions— a periodic business survey - is already underway. The Business Forum’s Executive Officer Alex Barker, has designed a questionnaire and over the next 12 months will visit all businesses to talk to managers/owners to gather information on issues affecting them including housing and staffing.

From the information collected Alex will be able to identify future trends and opportunities and link businesses to grants, services and training options available from organisations such as AusIndustry and the Northern Regional Development Board.

As part of this process Alex will also update the business information pages on the website.

This is a free service for businesses.

The survey results will provide valuable data that the Business Forum can use to plan its future activities and to support grant applications.

A Family and Youth Forum meeting was due to take place on 27th September.

However, due to an overlap with the Jack Wade Youth Strategy Workshop the meeting was postponed.

This gave Family and Youth Forum members an opportunity to attend the workshop, participate in the discussion and see how the youth development strategy fits in the Family and Youth implementation framework.

The workshop and associated discussion paper provided the Forum members with another layer of research that supports the Community Plan.

The inaugural Family and Youth Forum meeting will now take place on Tuesday, October 18, at 7.30pm.

SPORT AND RECREATION The strong message to come out of the first Sport and Recreation Forum meeting was that sport and recreation will change in Roxby Downs.

Clubs and organisations have a choice.

They can either direct that change or have it thrust upon them.

All sports must communicate effectively with each other because the impact on facilities and organising committees will be immense.

The Sport and Recreation Forum is the means to make this happen.

Those participating will guide policy, raise funds and help establish a position for a permanent Sport and Recreation Officer.

In the future it is expected that resources will be directed by the Forum.

Organisations that are not represented will have to apply to the Forum to gain access to those resources.

These issues will be discussed at the next meeting of the Forum which will be held on October 19.

All sport and recreation groups are invited to send an official representative to this meeting.

William Creek campdraft challenge

Local club hosts SA tournament BOWLS…Fourteen teams from all over the state nominated to play in the 2005 Roxby Downs bowls tournament in August.

Teams from Adelaide, Murray Bridge, Ceduna, Port Pirie, Crystal Brook, Bordertown, Cowell and Roxby Downs rolled up on the Friday before competition to get a feel for the new surface laid just a few weeks earlier.

Even though it was new, the surface rolled reasonably true and most bowlers had positive comments to say about the green.

The weather on the Saturday turned out magnificent after the previous couple of days that were pretty ordinary.

The format of the day was a game of fours before lunch and then split into pairs. One pair would have lunch while the other played on and then swap over, with the final game being fours.

After the pairs had finished there was only one side that had won all their games that team was a Roxby Downs team and one team had two wins and a draw.

At the end of the last game the team from Roxby Downs was the only team to win all their games.

The team of Brian Robinson (lead), Marcus Bowden (second), Simon James (third), and Jim Bowden (skip) won the day with a score of 216 points.

The second team, with 196 points and three wins and a draw, was a team from Port Pirie entered by Len Hayball.

In third spot with three wins and 188 points was a team entered by Des Rehn from Cowell.

Sunday saw the start to a magnificent day, the sun was shining and there was

CAMPDRAFT AND BRONCO BRANDING…The small community of William Creek played host to campdrafters and bronco branders from throughout the state and Queensland at their annual campdraft and bronco branding event held on Friday, September 23, and Saturday, September 24.

Friday morning saw campdrafters cutting out cattle from a “camp” before attempting to put them through a course on the arena. The William Creek Novice Campdraft was won by Corey Ferguson, North Moolooloo Station Copley. Second was Adam Litchfield, Wilpoorina Station, Marree and third was Robert Baker from Sandringham Station, Qld. Top Cut Out in the Novice Campdraft was shared by Robert Baker and Randall Crozier Anna Creek. First and Second in the the Lake Eyre Open Campdraft Bevan Roberts from Victor Harbour. Bevan was also Top Cut Out winner.

In the junior events, William Clarke from Allandale Station Oodnadatta won the Merty Merty Pastoral Junior Draft, followed by Chloe Nunn, Macumba Station in second and Tom Crozier, Anna Creek came third.

After a night of revelry in front of the William Creek Hotel where patrons danced to the music of the BC Boys, everyone gathered again on Saturday at the Gymkhana complex for the Bronco Branding.

The Landmark Singles competition was won in a time of 6.08.03 by the team of Jason Jones, Arckaringa Station

who was catcher, with a ground crew of Cameron Williams, Mt. Barry, Matthew Williams, Hamilton, and Paul Abbott, Nilpinna.

Tony Williams, Mt. Barry, together with his children Elizabeth, Patrick and Todd were second and Eddie Nunn’s Macumba team consisting of Eddie and Justin Nunn, Tom Curnow and Derek Rowe, Coober Pedy came in third.

The Kerry Gum Novice Catcher competition was won

by Colin Greenfield, Billa Kalina with his ground crew of Andrew Clarke, Allandale, Andrew Napier, Stirling North and Normie Sims, The Peake.

The afternoon brought on the Australian Satellite Services doubles competition. In this event two catchers are used, with three ground crew.

The young guns, Jason Jones, Cameron and Matthew Williams and Paul Abbott, still fired up after their Singles win joined with Normie Sims as their other catcher and were able to notch up their second win for the day, catching five calves in a time of 3.46.00.

Colin Greenfield and John Schrader teamed with Charles Webb, Hawker, Robert Baker, Sandringham and Brett Schmidt Nilpinna to take out second place and Tony Williams and Clayton Schmidt, along with Bill Drew, Adelaide, Shane Williams, Carrieton and Tim Williams, Hamilton came third.

The day’s entertainment ended with the Kerry Gum Steer Ride which was won by Lloyd Rankin, Alice Springs and the Adelaide Galvanising Saddle Bronc, won by Clayton Schmidt, with Greg Warren, Oodnadatta in second place.

The format was three games of fours.

After two games there were four teams with two wins a piece.

Two of these teams had to play each other which meant there was probably only going to be three threegame winners.

The team that came second on Saturday went one better and won the day on Sunday with 172 points, the team was lead by Tony Fusco, second Frank Norley, third Len Hayball and skipper John Davies.

The team was dubbed Granddad’s Army but they showed teams half their age how to play bowls.

The team taking up second position with 152 points consisted of Murray Gerschwitz, Vic Brown, Lester McKenzie, and John McDougall all past members of Bowls SA. The third placed team with 144 points was skippered by Cyril Hier from Ceduna.

The weekend was also the farewell to one of the club’s long term members, Barney Baxter, who is retiring to Murray Bridge.

The club will miss all the work and enthusiasm that Barney has shown over the many years of being a club member.

Good luck Barney in your retirement from the Roxby Downs Bowling Club.

Tae Kwon Do grading TAE KWON DO...The Roxby Down branch of Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do hosted a grading and training weekend on Saturday, September 17, and Sunday, September 18.

ChungDoKwan TaeKwonDo has been running locally for more than a year and this was the group’s third grading.

Community members were invited to view the grading, hosted by master instructor Adrian Hitch.

During the weekend, several local students achieved personal goals.

Josh Bishop was promoted to fourth grade.

Jeff Attwood, Brad Parks and Zoe Grigg were each promoted to the seventh grade while Matthew Lewis was promoted to ninth grade.

J U N I O R CRICKET… Roxby Downs will host a ‘Milo Have-a-Go Cricket’ program for five to 10-year-olds this summer. Have-aGo cricket is endorsed by the South Australian Cricket Association with an emphasis on introducing both boys and girls to the game of cricket through a series of modified cricket games. No experience is necessary. The program costs $30 per child and participants receive a Kanga Cricket ball and bat, Milo bucket hat, Kangaman CD Rom and a sachet of Milo. The fee will also cover all insurance during the sessions and will be collected on the first session of the season – Thursday, October 20. “We need parental assistance to help run the sessions. No experience is necessary - all you need is a hat and a desire to get in and help,” local ‘Have-a-Go’ coordinator Dave Boyle told The Monitor. “It’s great fun and the more assistance we get the more smoothly each session will run. If you’d like to volunteer please come along to any of the sessions.” The SA Cricket Association donated a kit of equipment in 2004 which was put to good use by local children – this year Citect Pty Ltd has donated another kit, consisting of bats, stumps, balls, batting tees and field markers.

Training sessions will be held at the Roxby Downs town oval from 5pm to 6pm on Thursday afternoons.

DIRT CIRCUIT...More than 80 drivers and 500 spectators flocked to the Roxby Downs Dirt Circuit track at the October long weekend, for the final round of State Titles.

Local teenager Josh Gigney was the big winner on the day, taking home the state title in the B-modifieds.

Roxby Downs racers performed well across the board, on the weekend, narrowly missing out on the Dunns team trophy by just five points.

State titles were calculated on results from two weekends of racing in both May and October. Roxby Downs racers featured in the top five of four of the five racing categories in the cumulative scores.

However, on their home turf this month, the standards were dominated by Roxby Downs racers Damian Jones, Tony Webber and Deb Beenham.

Josh Gigney was Round 2 winner in the B-modifieds while Justin Webb took out the A-modifieds.

Alfie Burrows took home the B Open-Wheeler trophy, while Steven Webber won the A Open-Wheeler category.

Racer Damian Jones clocked up a fastest time on the day for the Standard class.

Club president Steven Webber heralded the weekend as an overall success and congratulated the local racers.
