The mirage of a skate park has been on Roxby Downs’ horizon since 2003 and is finally set to become concrete fact.

Family and Youth Services Officer, Tom Beever, said the project will begin before Christmas.

“I’m so glad to be able to say that the skate park is now going to become a reality for the township,” he said.

The lack of a skate park in town has been a hotly debated issue for over three years – especially since it was announced in 2003 but then rapidly evaporated.

Recently, a number of people have written letters to the editor to The Monitor demanding to know why the park has not been built, especially when a number of other, seemingly less important tasks, had gone ahead.

Mr Beever said he was often asked what the major issues for people living in Roxby Downs were.

“I answer that for both young people and adults the skate park is a major concern – lots of people want to see this project finally finished,” he said.

“I’d like to applaud the community for their patience because they’ve been waiting for so long to see this happen.”

“From the moment I took up my role with the council 12 months ago I never had any doubt that this would happen – it was all just a matter of when we could announce a date,” he said.

A skate park in Roxby Downs would be no use to youths within town if it did not fit their varied needs and cater for both experienced and novice skaters, bike riders and rollerbladers.

“For me one of the important aspects of this project has been the involvement of young people.”

“I’ve asked lots of people to look at the plans and tell me what they do and do not like about them, that information and dialogue has been invaluable,” he said.

“I’m trying to avoid a situation where we get a park built designed by adults but fails to cater for the people who will use it.”

“It is imperative to have a park that young people can use and that is why we have actively sought community comment for this project,” Mr Beever said.

mation that is important dates for our outback towns so we can be as effective a resource for the entire region as we are for Roxby Downs.

Before you say” but they missed our organisation, how could they “we know the list is not complete and we are still confirming information and waiting for people to get back to us and there are many we have not contacted. It is a huge task to put together and it will continue to be so as we attempt to keep it up to date.

This is one of those cases where the easier road was to not even attempt this task. On the other hand particularly with our ever changing population we think this is a critical service to our reader’s right across the region.

Understandably most commercial newspapers run only a limited what’s on or community diary section because of space limitations and they are in the business of selling classified advertisements which suit many of these entries.

Being a community paper with a charter to serve the community, The Monitor is able to provide this as another service to the community.

At The Monitor we have been planning for months to amalgamate the community, Board and Forums and sports calendars into a What’s On page for easier reference.

The task proved to be greater than we first imagined as we strived to gather information from all sectors and towns across the region. The task was dragging on and on; it seemed the page would never be ready, there was always more information to get, more facts to check..

So we made a commitment to just ‘DO IT’ and the result is on page 18.

What you see this week is only the beginning. This is the calendar from the information we had available at the time of printing. There is still a considerable amount of information to be added as yet over the coming weeks We will keep adding and continue to experiment with the layout so keep watching over the following weeks. I’m writing in response to the article entitled “What is left behind” published in The Monitor on Thursday 5 October 2006.

The article described the rubbish left behind in the stadium after the netball finals on Saturday 23 September as “disgraceful” and “an unpleasant task for workers who had to clean up following the event.”

In defence of the Roxby Downs netball community, I would like to highlight that there was only one rubbish bin present in the stadium on Saturday 23 September and it was overflowing well before the end of matches that day.

In addition, myself and a couple of other netballers offered to help clean up the rubbish at the conclusion of the days’ activities, only to be told by Cultural Precinct staff not to worry as the cleaners would be in soon and that’s what they’re paid to do.

I would see the act of “putting duty managers in charge to ask people to put their rubbish in the bins” as unnecessary if ample bins are provided for patrons’ use and these bins are emptied throughout the day.

Furthermore, it is interesting to note that following the netball finals, there was a street party on the medium strip outside the Leisure Centre.

There were no issues with rubbish left behind after this party as there were ample rubbish bins in the vicinity of the gathering.

Hold onto your hats Roxby Downs, the Guides are coming to town There has been a lot of talk about Guides and Scouts starting up and on Monday, October 16, the wait was over.

Under the watchful eye of Group Leader, Julie Steele, the Guides met at the Christian Community Church on the corner of Burgoyne and Tutop Streets.

Ms Steele, who has two daughters of her own, has been associated with Guides and Scouts for 15 years.

“I loved my time as a guide, and I really wanted my girls to have the same opportunities I had to become one,” Ms Steele said.

Apparently the residents of Roxby Downs agreed.

The 5 – 8 and 9 – 12-year-old units are full and there is already a substantial waiting list.

Ms Steele said they are looking for women to become Guide leaders.

“If we can get more leaders, we can take more girls,” Ms Steele said.

“You don’t need to have previous Guiding experience, just a keenness to get involved and an ability to commit to a day each week.”

“And of course, they will also need to pass a police clearance as they will be working with young people,” she

said.

Ms Steele will also be calling on the parents of the Guides to form a parents committee and is asking the community to come up with suggestions for badge designs and names for the units.

The Guides have been operating for almost 100 years, have spread to 140 countries and boast around 10 million members.

We need more guards

Many people in Roxby Downs would no doubt like to see the swimming pool open for longer every day, especially as we move ever closer towards another sweltering summer.

But can it be done?

A chat with Cultural and Leisure Precinct Manager, Karyn Biggs, reveals some reasons why the pool is not open for longer.

Most importantly, there are lots of people and groups in Roxby Downs who want access to the pool and not everyone can use it at once.

Already the swimming club, lap swimmers, Roxby Downs Area School, St Barbara’s Parish School and general users vie for use of the pool and at the present size only so many people can use it at the one time.

“The demands of the community on the pool are just huge and we have to try and fit in everybody,” Ms Biggs said.

“When the school holidays come around again the pool will be open every day to the general public and those times will be dependent on the number of lifeguards we can find.”

“Ultimately we’d like to be open from 10am – 10pm every day but at the moment it is looking like we won’t have enough lifeguards to cover those times for

entire period of the Christmas holidays,” she said.

Under Royal Lifesaving regulations, the pool must have one lifeguard per 100 people. The first lifeguard on deck must be a fully qualified Lifeguard over the age of 16 but the next two lifeguards on deck can be Bronze Medallion qualified and aged between 14 and 16-years-old.

“We also need to ensure we can rotate the Lifeguards so they are not spending too long on deck at any one time.”

“Obviously it gets very hot out there in the middle of summer, so we need to look after the health and safety of the people we are relying on to save us if we need it,” Ms Biggs said.

“We are currently looking to train a number of 14 – 16-year-olds to Bronze Medallion standard so they can work alongside our fully qualified lifeguards.”

“So far we only have two people register their interest in the course and we need more than that to run the course,” Ms Biggs said.

Some of the feedback Mr Beever received on the skate involved the need for the surrounding area to be grassed.

“People told us that they wanted the park to be surrounded by grass and not bark chipping because the bark would get scattered and find its way underneath the skateboard wheels, so we’ll be putting the park in a grassed area.”

“Parents also came to us and said they wanted to have seating around the park so they could sit and watch as their children played and experimented, so that will also be put in place,” Mr Beever said.

The park will be located between the Lions Park and tennis courts, giving easy access to everyone in town.

A New South Wales construction company has been chosen to build the park and Mr Beever said the company has a great reputation.

“The company we’ve employed to construct the park are extremely professional. They’ve been responsible for building a number of parks across the country, including South

Australia,” Mr Beever said.

The park will be constructed by BCP Precast using a modular design, meaning extra modules may be added to increase the number of obstacles within the park. All other work will be handled by local contractors.

The cost is expected to be in the region of $150,000 – $80,000 of which will be supplied by BHP Billiton, while the rest will come from the Roxby Downs Council and possibly the South Australian Government.

Mr Beever said he wanted to thank BHP Billiton, the Roxby Downs Council.

“I applaud BHP Billiton and the Council who have worked extremely hard behind the scenes to get this project happening and I’m really pleased to say it is going to happen.”

“I’d like to say to all the skaters out there that your skate park will be here and to all people who have offered any suggestions I’d like to thank them for that.”

“I can promise the opening will be a day of great celebration, which will be announced in all of the local media outlets.”

“The site has been measured up and will fall in line with the town’s Master Plan, so once it has been finished it won’t be moved,” he said.

Town Administrator Bill Boehm said the council was glad to be in a position to deliver the park.

“Council has always been committed to this project and it was unfortunate that the previous idea was too expensive and inappropriate for the town,” he said.

“This has been the council’s highest priority and we are now just speaking with local youths on the final layout and design.”

“It has been pleasing to see BHP Billiton support this project over and above their commitments to the town,” he said.

Mr Boehm said the location had been chosen to benefit both users of the park and their families.

“People will be able to go to the Lions Park and watch their children use the skate park. It is also going to be covered by lights so people can use it at night and there are toilets nearby – it’s a great location.”

So, who wants to be a lifeguard?

The Roxby Downs Leisure and Cultural Precinct’s swimming pool is a wonderful facility which provides watery entertainment for all.

But like all swimming pools, it can also be dangerous, which is why we have lifeguards – who watch over the crowd and keep the fun safe and it appears to be a pretty cool job.

Kateland Fraser, 16, certainly enjoys it. .

To become a lifeguard Kateland completed a three day course at the Leisure Centre, which cost a little over $100 but she insisted was entirely worthwhile.

The course has a number of components, including practical demonstrations – like swimming 400m, plus theory and first aid for resuscitation and bandaging.

“Doing the course was really interesting and educational,” she said.

role plays, which Kateland said were designed to prepare the lifeguards in training for situations which they were likely to encounter at the pool.

Kateland said the course had left her well prepared for the work.

“The first few days it was pretty daunting because I wasn’t used to the responsibility but I’m used to it now,” she said.

“Even if I wasn’t working as a lifeguard the qualifications I earned would be pretty useful,” she said.

Also useful, in Kateland’s mind, was the pay.

“The pay is pretty good and it’s nice for me to watch people out in the pool having fun,” she sad.

“Watching people enjoying themselves and being safe at the same time is the best part of my job. I like to make sure that the pool is a safe environment for people to come along and enjoy.”

Sandvik strong on training and development Career Employment Group (CEG) apprentices and trainees are distributed throughout companies in Roxby Downs and more importantly, Olympic Dam. Clearly larger companies are the major employers of these tradespeople in training.

Sandvik, formerly SDS Ausminco, employs seven apprentices for in their Olympic Dam operations, which include fabrication, painting, construction and heavy machinery.

Of the seven apprentices employed by Sandvik, two are training to be boilermakers, there are two machinist/ fitters, a further two are learning to be mechanics, while another is likely to become an electrician.

The Monitor took the opportunity last week to speak with two of Sandvik’s apprentice boilermakers and the company’s Occupational Health and Safety and Environment Coordinator.

Josh Davis has only recently joined the Sandvik team and is enjoying the first year of his apprenticeship, even though he is also a new resident of Roxby Downs.

Mr Davis explained why he gave up working on his father’s vineyard in Berri to move to the outback.

“I contacted CEG and Shane Thomson because I wanted to get myself a trade which I could rely on later in life,” he said.

At the other end of the spectrum is former Pt Lincoln resident, Nathan McElroy, who came to the area after working for nearly three years as a boilermaker apprentice at a shipyard.

Mr McElroy is a fourth year apprentice with only seven months left to finish his trade.

“I transferred my apprenticeship to Sandvik during the third year of my apprenticeship.”

“When I applied for work through CEG I was told there was a position available at Sandvik and after an interview I chose to take the position,” he said.

Mr McElroy said that once he finished his trade he would continue to study and add to his welding qualifications, hopefully completing a welding inspection and certification certificate.

“I’d like to pick up the inspection certification because it would give me the opportunity to go overseas, make some money and see the world,” he said.

Both apprentices said choosing to work for Sandvik had been a great decision.

“Sandvik has given us all the support we need and it has been a really safe environment in which to learn,” Mr McElroy said.

“They have given me and the rest of the guys a great opportunity to expand our skill set as a tradesperson,” he said.

The most interesting project which Mr McElroy had been involved in was the installation of the RB29 ventilation system for the mine, which utilises enormous extraction fans to suck out air from inside the mine.

By drawing air from the mine outside, a vacuum is created which draws in ‘cool’ air.

Sandvik’s OH&S and Environmental Coordinator, David Bastian, said the company was glad to host CEG apprentices.

“It’s good having them around and I see them all as equals within the workplace.”

“With my job I have to look at the whole operation and not just individuals. Being an ex-tradesperson myself it is great to see the company supporting so many apprentices,” he said.

“One thing I’ve found about Sandvik is that they are very strong on training and development – which obviously suits the apprentices very well.”

Police News Local Police assisted ODT Transport and Monadelphous Engineering to move a very large wide load from Olympic Dam to the Mine on Saturday, October 14.

The load required Olympic Way to be closed in sections over a one hour period while the load passed.

Police received a report of a fire in the rear yard of a residence on Friday, October 13.

Minimal damage was caused and the fire was extinguished without the use of the Country Fire Service (CFS).

Police remind everyone that the fire danger season has commenced early this year due to the extremely dry conditions.

Although our area does not have the high fuel loads of elsewhere in South Australia and a major bush fire is unlikely, due to our arid conditions any area affected by fire will take a long time to recover.

A head on collision occurred on Olympic Way between a Toyota Van and a Holden Station Wagon on Friday evening, October 13.

As a result the driver of one of the vehicles was trapped in the vehicle for over three-and-a-half-hours before being successfully freed.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to the Roxby Downs Hospital with one driver being flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service for further treatment.

Members from the SA Police Major Crash Investigation Section attended Roxby Downs on Monday, October 16,

to assist local police with investigations into the accident.

Whilst it is disappointing to have such a serious accident on local roads, it was pleasing to see the local Emergency Services working together as a close knit team in the successful extrication of the trapped driver.

Over 20 Emergency Service personnel from the SA Ambulance, CFS, SES and Olympic Dam Mine Emergency Services worked in difficult conditions for almost four hours.

Most of these people are volunteers and their many hours of training showed in the way they managed the situation.

As a community we can never give enough thanks to this dedicated group of people.

Following a single vehicle rollover on the Andamooka Road on Thursday, October 12, one male was airlifted from the Roxby Downs Hospital for treatment in Adelaide.

The vehicle was extensively damaged and on Friday, October 13, parts and fuel were stolen from the vehicle before it was set alight.

Police would like anyone who has information in relation to either the accident or the subsequent theft of vehicle parts and arson to contact the Roxby Downs Police.

An attempt was made to enter a residential residence by unknown person/s on Monday, October 9. Damage was caused to a window screen but no entry was gained.

Family Matters One evening, a few weeks back, disaster struck our home. Yep! Something REALLY BAD happened that almost turned our lives upside down! What happened, you ask? Well, I thank you for your concern because you see, our teenage daughter…lost…her…mobile…phone!!!!

Yep! When she was out with her friends, her three month young, expensive, prized possession somehow became lost.

When the catastrophe was discovered, my daughter’s friends helped search for the missing treasure, but to no-avail.

I know many of you will understand our “crisis situation” because we all know how vital our mobile phone is now-a-days, especially for teenagers.

But some might be thinking more about why our daughter was out at night rather than her lost phone.

I say that, because it seems by some that when teenagers are seen talking in the street at night they are either up to no good or they should be at home!

What I would like to remind our community is that our young people are like other young people elsewhere, they need and crave friendships and they have the right to try and establish them as best they can where they can.

Of course, having teenagers hang around town until the early hours of the morning isn’t good for anyone and parents are the very ones that should be preventing that from happening, but young people do need opportunities to be able to “hang out” together.

Our youth centre is a place where a number of young people like to gather and hang out which is fabulous because it is not only supervised, but it is also a place of education.

I therefore encourage parents and young people to call into the newly extended youth centre, take a look around and talk with the youth worker about programs and what happens there.

The soon to be established skate park will be a great place for young people to gather and be active and I extend my warm thanks to the young people who helped in the early development of the skate park because their involvement and feedback has be crucial.

Thanks to some of our Roxby parents, there are often parties for our young people to gather and have fun.

Friendships are an important aspect of life for all of us but young people especially need time and circumstances to help develop and maintain them.

Statistics tell us that young people accept the fact that parents play a major role in allowing them to mix with friends but sadly some parents don’t seem to care, which means some young people are able to go out and do their own thing.

On the other hand, I know there are good parents out there who are trying like mad to guide their children in regards to their children’s growth and development but for lots of reasons, don’t seem to be getting anywhere.

What I would like to therefore suggest to all parents with teenagers, is to sit down with them and work out agreed “common ground” in regards to home, school (work) and their independence because without it there WILL be confusion, that can AND does lead to conflict within the home.

Once the common ground has been established, never allow it to be eroded or forgotten because young people are like adults, they need to know their boundaries.

What I would like to remind our community is that we all have an obligation to assist our adolescents in their growth and independence.

Talk to our young people, show interest in them, acknowledge them when you pass them by, forget the scowl because remember, you were a young person once.

Keep in mind that there are new community initiatives in the pipe line that will not only provide more meeting places for our young people, but they will greatly benefit all of us.

Oh, by the way. Thanks to a good friend of my daughter, her mobile phone was found. (No thanks to the person who found it and decided to keep it). But it was through the “lost” mobile drama that I was reminded about the importance of friendship and independence of our young.

Fire Prevention officer signals dangers

Ten years locally and still going strong First opening for business in 1996, Dr Melville-Smith of the Roxby Downs Veterinary Clinic has seen Roxby go through a lot of changes.

“It’s come a long way in the 10 years I’ve been here,” Dr Melville-Smith said.

“It’s gone from being a dust bowl to being like a suburb of a major city,” he said.

The Roxby Downs Veterinary Clinic provides consultations and surgery for cats, dogs, horses and birds and also doubles as the local pet shop.

They re-house stray dogs and cats, sell a range of small domestic animals like ferrets, mice and birds and provide a one stop pet accessory shop, stocking everything from collars and leads to medicated shampoo.

Splitting his time between practices in Roxby, Whyalla and Cowell, Dr MelvilleSmith visits town every fortnight but a clinic employee is on call seven days a week.

“Someone is always here,” Dr Melville Smith said.

“If you have a problem you can call 0419 806 392 and talk to the vet on call, or you can speak to a local vet nurse who is registered with the Veterinary Board of Surgeons and is able to treat emergencies

under supervision.”

Dr Melville-Smith said being a vet is a challenging job.

“You never know what is going to come through the door next, just when you think you’ve seen everything, something new pops up,” he said.

In fact, the Roxby Downs Veterinary Clinic is so well regarded, the Melbourne University Veterinary School send students to work with them after they have completed their final exams.

“It gives the students a chance to work on a one to one basis with a qualified vet and put their knowledge into practice,” Dr Melville-Smith said.

Corrie Pinkster, who recently passed her final exams, joined Dr Melville-Smith’s practices for clinical experience.

Ms Pinkster said she had really enjoyed her time in Roxby.

“The people have been fantastic, really open to having a student around,” she said.

The Roxby Downs Veterinary Clinic is located at Shop 4 Richardson Place.

Clinic hours are 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12pm on Saturdays.

Youth Centre set to re-open Good news for parents and youths – the Youth Centre will open this week.

Youth Worker, Siona Glasson, said the centre was due to open on Wednesday afternoon, depending on how much cleaning up of the centre had to be done after the recent extension works.

“Beenham’s let me know a week ago on Friday that they had put the flooring down so I can come in and clean up so we can open up this week,” Miss Glasson said.

“I’m pretty excited about having to open up the centre again and it’ll be great to offer young people a place

where they can come in and socialise in a safe environment.” “I’m sure the people who usually come along will be excited to see the new and revamped centre,” she said.

The Youth Centre will be open for the remainder of the week, as well as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the following week.

And fear not, there will be a party to ‘officially’ re-open the centre.

“We’re going to have a Halloween and housewarming party on Friday, November 3, so people can get dressed up as their favourite Halloween character and come along to check the new centre.”

Last week, The Monitor brought our readers a warning from the Country Fire Service (CFS) of the advancement of start date for the Fire Danger Season.

For anyone who missed it – Fire Danger Season began on Sunday, October 15.

What many people might not know is that Roxby Downs, like most towns, also has both a fire prevention officer and committee.

Roxby Downs Council’s Trevor Kroemer works as the town’s fire prevention officer.

In this role Mr Kroemer has 20 years experience.

“We have had a few fires here - house fires and some scrub fires - and we should always be aware of the chances of fire and the causes and keep fuel loads to a minimum.”

“For the past few months we have been carefully monitoring the dryness (curing) and fuel loads and reporting these finding to our CFS Regional Headquarters in Port Augusta,” Mr Kroemer said.

“In many places around town the fuel levels on the ground would not sustain a running fire but in others

it would.”

“Some areas have enough fuel to allow a fire to jump between trees and continue,” he said.

Mr Kroemer said that he thought most people in town would be unaware that the town is covered by a bushfire prevention committee, which has developed a plan for emergencies.

“In fact our bushfire prevention committee meets once a month and the bushfire prevention plan has to be approved by CFS headquarters in Adelaide,” he said.

The former CFS Act – which governed fire prevention and management across SA - has been changed to the Fire and Emergency Services Act, which has required some sections of the act to be changed.

Mr Kroemer explained how the responsibility for fire prevention was handled in conjunction by the CFS and Council.

“The CFS handles fire suppression, or fire fighting, while the council, myself and the committee, are responsible for all fire prevention activities,” he said.

During the Fire Danger Season all

fires need to have permits with strict conditions set down by the Fire and Emergency Services Act. To find out about these contact Trevor Kroemer or Peter Keller at the Roxby Downs Council or the Regional Headquarters in Port Augusta.

Roxby Downs, Woomera and Andamooka all fall within South Australia’s North West Pastoral area and if farmers or landowners want to burn off rubbish on their property they are required to seek permits from the council.

There are also Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements which must be rigidly followed.

Anyone interested in conducting a controlled burn-off in our region should contact either Trevor Kroemer or Peter Keller (both available through the Roxby Downs Council) to get permission.

Show n Shine in Roxby Downs Local petrol heads and fans of motor vehicles, both four and twowheeled, get ready to party.

The Roxby Downs Show n Shine takes place on Saturday, October 28, from 9:30 – 11:30am.

Marketing Coordinator for the Roxby Central Traders Association, Sandy Visser, said she was looking forward to a successful event.

“We hope that lots of people come down to enjoy the day.”

“The Show n Shine is not just for carheads – it’s a family day for parents to come along and look at the cars with their children and have a barbeque,” she said.

A number of categories are available for anyone interested in showing off their motorised pride and joy,

including best: ute, 4X4, classic, presented, bike and the people’s choice.

While Mrs Visser said she had loved hot cars for a long time her car was not up for judging.

“My car is a little past it unfortunately but some of the entries I’ve seen are just amazing. Some people have already brought their cars down to Autopro and filled out their entry forms for the day,” she said.

“People put lots of effort into their cars and it’s great to have an opportunity to show them off sometimes,” she said.

Proceeds from the day will go to Youth Services.

“We’re hoping to raise lots of money to give to Youth Services,

which provide entertainment for the town’s young people,” she said.

RoxFM is also involved in the event and Crusty will be present on the day inside the brightly adorned RoxFM trailer.

A gold coin donation is required to enter a vehicle in the event and entry forms are available at the Roxby Downs Autopro.

Mrs Visser requested people to enter before the event if possible, simply to make the organising of parking smoother but entry on the day will be allowed.

Anyone interested in entering a vehicle should contact Autopro on 8671 2200.

Tough on drugs Premier Mike Rann has continued to expand his government’s ‘getting tough on crime’ motto by cracking down on those involved with marijuana.

The South Australian Government has greatly increased the fines given to people caught smoking, selling or cultivating cannabis.

The new fines – which come into effect on December 3 – will double, or even, triple those in place now.

Atto r n e y - G e n e r a l M i ch a el Atkinson said the new legislation would deliver the first increase in the fines in more than 20 years.

“The Controlled Substances Act was introduced in 1984 and fines have remained unchanged since 1985.”

“This means the current fees do not reflect their original intent to prohibit the illegal use of cannabis.

Mr Atkinson said the move reflected the Rann Government’s tough stance on law and order.

“During our last term we changed the law so people caught growing cannabis hydroponically would face court and punishment, rather than just being issued with on-the-spot fines.”

“We have also announced that we

will introduce legislation to make it tougher to buy hydroponic equipment and police will soon have the authority to inspect known drugdealers’ premises without a search warrant,” he said.

The increase in penalties for simple cannabis offences will result in some large changes.

For instance, the fine for possession of less than 25 grams of cannabis will increase from $50 to $150, while the penalty for smoking cannabis in public will double, from $150 to $300.

Desert Motor X Club end of season twilight event MotorX is an exciting and highly entertaining sport and the Roxby Desert Motor X Club is holding an end of season twilight event this Saturday.

As well as wild motorcycle racing, a number of other entertainment events are scheduled – including local band Ant Acid.

The festivities kick off from 3pm and the night will not end until early Sunday morning.

Catering will be available during the day and late into the night.

Riding starts at 3pm and will include

classes for juniors, quad riders, freestyle and open motor X. All riders are reminded that membership and basic safety gear is required for anyone heading out onto the track.

The twilight event is being sponsored

by SA Dirt Bikes, Cat Rental, BSH, Ready Mix, Coates Hire, BP and Roxby Ice. Entry cost is $5 per person and anyone interested in coming along to see all the wild jumps and track action is encouraged to head out to the track on Opal Road (the tip road just pas BP on Olympic Way) and enjoy a great event.

“Labour market conditions in 2006 are the best they’ve been since the 1970’s…the unemployment rate fell to 5.2% in February 2006, close to 30-year lows” The Australian Government, Department of Employment and Workplace Relations recently released its publication ‘Australian Jobs 2006’.

Australian Jobs 2006 provides information about the Australian labour market, including detail about past employment trends, future employment growth by industry and occupation and an array of information about future job prospects.

One of the factors influencing the growth in part-time work has been the increasing participation of young people in education.

Today, young people are far more likely to undertake further study rather than leave school and take-up employment without qualifications.

In February 1988 54 per cent of 15-19 year olds were in full-time education. In February 2006, over two-thirds of 15-19 year olds (68 per cent) are full-time students. Often participating in part-time employment whilst studying.

Teenage part-time employment has grown by over 60 per cent in the last 15 years.

In the five years to February 2006, approximately 998,000 jobs were created in Australia.

Four industries accounted for some two thirds of all new jobs.

The largest jobs growth was in construction (221,900 new jobs), retail trade (169,800), health and

community services (155,300) and education (113,800).

By percentage, employment growth over the past five years has been strongest in mining (63.4 per cent) construction (33.8 per cent) and electricity, Gas and Water Supply (31.8 per cent).

Five industries will provide 80 per cent of the future jobs Australian Jobs 2006 expects five industries to provide more than 80 per cent of Australia’s jobs over the next five years to 2010 - 2011.

In parallel with the ageing population of Australia it is anticipated that the Health and Community Services sector will experience an increase of more than 150,000 jobs over the next five years.

The Property and Business Services and Retail Trade industries are expected to see high jobs growth. Whilst Construction (some 75,600 new jobs over five years), Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants (45,200) and Personal and Other Services (42,700) are also predicted to contribute significantly to jobs growth.

Which occupations and skills are in demand?

The Australian Labour Market is currently very strong and therefore people who currently hold the skills in demand are in a very good position with regard to employment prospects.

In considering further training and education you need to consider what the labour market may be like when you have completed your training.

For example, the strong demand

for occupations such as fitters and mining engineers is currently high as mining activity throughout the country is currently very strong.

The labour market can change very quickly and the current demand for skills could change over the coming years.

Strong demand now does not guarantee employment within that sector in the future.

It is therefore very important that career decisions are based on a number of factors including your interests, aptitude, expectations regarding life-style, pay and work conditions.

Considering the statistical information and future occupational prospect charts as provided in Australian Jobs 2006 simply adds to the wealth of information you can gather in order to make informed employment and career decisions.

We do not give them a second minutes thought, save one night of the year.

That’s right everyone, it’s Halloween again.

This year the youth centre and Youth Worker Siona Glasson have decided to put on a show for any young people with some free time.

From 5-8pm this Halloween (October 31) Richardson place will be alive with beings from the other side of death, asking you the infamous question TRICK OR TREAT. The young people who dress up and register themselves just near the rotunda on the night will be in with a chance at winning a prize for the best costume.

For those who do not win, however, the youth centre will be selling a variety of glow sticks for around one dollar each.

Miss Glasson has celebrated Halloween for nearly every year since she was twelve-years-old.

“It’s my favourite holiday, it’s better than Christmas,” exclaimed Siona, who will make her own costume and this year, will be dressing up as a sixteenth century countess.

Siona wished to express her thanks to the shops partaking in the fun and ensuring it will be a great night out.

As well as the “Street Trick or Treat”, Friday, November 3, provided the Youth Centre is open, there will be a Halloween party and housewarming at the Youth Centre for 12 – 25 year olds.

Dressing up is essential to suit the Halloween theme and everyone at the centre looks forward to seeing you there.

s . s s .. s e S nak Tiger Snakes and small children…sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Fortunately the man handling the Tiger snakes is a seasoned professional.

The Leisure Centre’s gymnasium was the location for an entertaining and educational snake management seminar on Tuesday night, watched by at least 130 visitors.

Handler Geoff Coombe, who operates Living With Wildlife, explained to the crowd why snakes are such dangerous animals and all care should be taken to avoid contact with them.

Mr Coombe emphasised that any attempts to capture or hurt snakes should be avoided because that is when most bites are inflicted.

Running from 7:30 – 8:30, the show began with an information session on some of our legless neighbours and then moved to the main event – the live snake show.

Handler Mr Coombe opened a series of garbage bins and removed the occupants – live snakes.

First up was a harmless (unless you happen to be a small marsupial or rodent) python, which was duly showed to the assembled crowd. Many in the front row were given the opportunity to touch and closely observe the non-venomous reptile, which did it’s best to strangle the handler’s hand.

Second on the list was a tree snake, this time venomous but with fangs at the back of their mouth which makes it nearly impossible for humans to be envenomed – injected with venom.

Mr Coombe explained how and why snakes are so flexible and then demonstrated to the crowd – by tying the hapless tree snake into a reef knot. The clearly unimpressed reptile played along and quickly unwound itself.

Two volunteers were drawn from the crowd and asked to hold a line of electrical cord aloft between them.

The handler then dropped the flex-

ible and docile python onto the line and showed the crowd how it was able to balance itself on the line and move along.

A procession of highly venomous snakes, including several species of brown snakes, two tiger snakes, a death adder and a red Collet’s Snake (Queensland brown snake) were then shown to the crowd.

Which brings us back to the tiger snakes.

Mr Coombe unceremoniously dumped two medium-sized tiger snakes onto the gym floor barely five metres away from small children.

Both snakes immediately sought refuge…in the crowd but were unable to make any headway across the gym floor because it was too smooth for their scales to gain traction.

Of course, nobody was in any danger because our intrepid handler was only a metre away.

Contrary to their name and popular belief, the tiger snakes were not aggressive and looked to be trying to escape and only became agitated when provoked by Mr Coombe and his hooked handling stick.

More aggressive were some of the brown snakes which were shown later.

Brown snakes and black snakes (King brown or Mulga snakes) are native to this region and commonly found in close proximity to the township, sometimes even in yards.

These reptiles – with some provocation – flattened out their necks, raised their heads and tried to strike the handling stick being waved in front of them.

However, when the stick stopped moving, the snakes calmed down and again looked for escape and refuge, going so far as to curl up inside an empty frozen dinner box.

Above all the message from the night was to remain calm, always wear protective boots and long trousers when walking and try to avoid contact with our reptilian neighbours.

Bathroom illusion – it’s all done with mirrors

By Robert Harding, SA/NT Executive Director A reader writes that she has a very small bathroom in the process of renovation, and has a friend who is urging her to make extensive use of mirrors to create the illusion of more space.

She was planning on fully-tiled walls and floor and worries the over-use of mirrors will look flashy and cheap.

“There is no way I can afford a major renovation involving the bathroom’s enlargement and I will have to make do with the current space, which is about 1.70 metres by 2.90 metres,” she writes.

“However, I will eventually be selling and I want something that will be reasonably appealing to the average buyer.”

There is no doubt that mirrors do tend to open up enclosed spaces, and a really small bathroom which relies on nothing but tiled walls and floor with just the mandatory mirror over the vanity unit, will probably look and

feel closed in and oppressive.

That is not to say you should abandon tiles – there are such a wide range of styles and colours available now that it would be silly not to take advantage of them – however, they work at their best in larger areas.

The probable answer is a compromise – a big mirror on the largest expanse of wall set in the midst of tiles.

It should add to the resale value of the home as it will take the prospective buyer’s eye away from the room’s small size.

MoleMax machine at Grace Surgery Grace Surgery in Tutop Street has a new soldier in the battle against melanoma, basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer – The MoleMax machine.

Australians have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, according to The Cancer Council of South Australia.

Melanoma accounts for around five per cent of all skin cancers.

In 2001 more than 600 South Australians were diagnosed with melanoma and 71 died of the disease.

Sun exposure, a fair complexion, a large number of moles, age and family history are all factors that can

increase the risk of melanoma.

Due to our harsh climate, Roxby Downs’s residents can be particularly susceptible to skin cancers.

The MoleMax machine takes photos that penetrate the upper layers of skin to show what is really going on with your moles.

The photos are then analysed by special computer software, accompanied by a visual examination conducted by the doctors at Grace Surgery who have undergone specialised training to identify potential skin cancers.

“It is important to watch your moles up here because of the extreme weather conditions,” Grace Surgery

employee, Cherie Siegmann said.

“The naked eye can’t see what a mole is really like.”

“The MoleMax machine gives you an indication of whether your moles are cancerous or benign,” she said.

A mole scanning appointment will take 20 – 30 minutes and cost $10 (the gap not covered by Medicare).

Scanning will be available during the day and, to cater shift workers, Ms Seigmann has volunteered to give up some of her own time to perform scans outside of normal surgery hours.

Ever since I began writing newspaper articles, lecturing to people or advising clients, I always discuss the relationship between stress and the human body.

Great merchandise great work Gabrielle Overton, Relationship Development Coordinator, who recently visited Roxby is returning to give local residents the opportunity to share The Cancer Council South Australia (TCCSA) retail experience.

A large range of skin care, clothing, hats and cosmetic products for men women and children will be available through the support of the Roxby Board at the next Market Day. Gabrielle says TCCSA are most excited about the opportunity to participate and will come armed with a very exciting range of products.

Gabrielle’s visit will also highlight the work undertaken by the Cancer Council and its many branches across the regions and while in Roxby she will meet with the community to discuss the potential for local initiatives to support the TCCSA. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Pink Ribbon Day on Monday 23rd October it’s an

ideal opportunity to meet with the community and TCCSA thanks the Roxby Downs Board for the invitation to attend.

A morning tea will be held on Tuesday 24th October where members of the Community Board and relevant Forums have been invited to meet with Gabrielle and hear of the potential for communities such as Roxby to be involved In furthering the vital work of the Cancer Council.

Gabrielle who works with 15 TCCSA branches across South Australia as well as corporate groups is very interested in meeting with the community and hopes a branch can be set up to represent the area .

Halloween history discover the identity of your true love.

Apples were placed into a barrel of water and then had to be picked up by the teeth without using any hands.

Once an apple had been caught, the lucky bobber would peel off the skin and throw it into the water, where it would curl into the first initial of their true love’s name.

In North America it was believed that if a young, single woman sat in a darkened room on Halloween night, her future husband’s face would appear in her mirror.

If a skull appeared instead she would die before she married.

In Ireland young women placed slugs into a saucer sprinkled with flour.

Their wriggling bodies were supposed to leave a pattern of the face of the viewer’s true love.

A night much associated with spirits and the dead, trick or treating may have its origins in the practice of ‘souling’, where people would go from door to door offering prayers for the dead in return for food.

As it was Halloween and spirits were abroad, people were afraid of being possessed so they dressed up in scary costumes and wore masks or blackened their faces to frighten the spirits away.

In 1950 a group of Pennsylvanian children donated $17 they had collected during their trick or treating to help children in need overseas.

Now small orange ‘Trick or Treat’ UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) boxes are a common sight in America and dedicated Halloween goers have raised over $100 million for UNICEF. It wasn’t all candy and bonfires though, Halloween was also known as a night of mischief where all sorts of pranks might be performed.

Doors were removed from their hinges, rotten eggs thrown at houses and trees decorated with streamers of toilet paper.

Before the invention of the indoor toilet one of the most popular Halloween pranks involved the removal or tipping over of the outhouse that held the outdoor privy.

The poor householder, going out to relieve himself in the dead of night, might find himself without a seat to sit on.

If he was unlucky he might find himself at the bottom of a rather nasty and very fragrant hole.

Halloween is on Tuesday, October 31, so trick or treat but watch your feet!

Halloween originated in Ireland over 2000 years ago and is now celebrated all over the world.

Originally a Celtic pagan festival, Halloween marked the beginning and the end of the Wheel of the Year.

It was a sign that the bountiful months of summer had passed and the lean times of winter were on their way.

It was also a night when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead were believed to thin, allowing spirits to return to visit or haunt the living.

Halloween was marked by the building of immense bonfires, burned to honour the Celtic Gods and to keep villages safe from evil spirits.

People would gather at the bonfires to celebrate and then carr y away a glowing coal in a hollowed out turnip or pumpkin carved into a hideous face to scare away any ghosts they might encounter on the way home.

The coal was used to light the home fires and then placed outside the front door or left on a window sill to ward off malevolent spirits and to welcome home the ghosts of family and friends.

This is where the carved Halloween pumpkin, the Jack-o-lantern, originated.

The name ‘Jack-o-lantern’ was born of an Irish folk tale.

Stingy Jack was an Irishman who trapped the devil in a tree.

In return for his release, the devil promised that Jack would never go to hell but when Jack died he had been too sinful to go to heaven.

His bargain with the devil also barred him from entering hell.

Doomed to roam the earth until the Day of Judgement, Jack carved a lantern out of a turnip, placed a burning coal inside and began to wander, seeking a place where his tortured spirit could rest.

Another Halloween custom that has survived to this day is the baking of barmbrack, a light fruit cake with a piece of rag and a ring cooked into it.

The person who gets the piece of cake with the rag inside will have financial troubles.

The person receiving the piece with the ring inside can look forward to an impending romance.

Culture what is it?

In a recent article in The Monitor, Arts Development Officer, Rodney Mitchell, asked the question, “What is culture?”

“Things like meat pies, fast cars, family, beer and swimming are part of our culture,” Mr Mitchell said.

“Our culture is quite different from the culture of someone from a different place and we can only really see what it is by looking at it through an outsider’s eyes.”

“There is strength in diversity. In a town like Roxby Downs where we have a vested interest in welcoming people from other cultures it is important to embrace our own culture and theirs as well,” he said.

Manager of the Cultural and Leisure Precinct, Karen Biggs agreed.

“It’s about sharing cultures, especially in Roxby Downs where so many different cultures are represented,” she said.

“Most people think it’s about art galleries, opera and classical music, people don’t associate culture with the broader perception.”

“Culture is about our beliefs and how we live in society. It encompasses everything about our way of life,” she said.

The word ‘culture’ means different things to different people.

Office Administer at The Monitor, Heather Carey said culture is a way of living.

“It’s not only arts, crafts and music,” Mrs Carey said.

“It is endemic to an indigenous lifestyle. It is a broad way of life, encompassing all interests,” she said.

Youth Worker Siona Glasson said culture is a combination of the environment, values, morals and beliefs people live by.

So, what is culture?

Music, lifestyle, fashion, language, literature, sports, values, morals, ideals, art, crafts, taste, polish, knowledge, learning, civilisation, style, religion, diversity, manners, mannerisms, society, pastimes, hobbies, employment, history…..

Culture - it’s not just opera.

2006 quilting exhibition The Roxby Scrapbag Quilters are holding their biannual quilting exhibition on the weekend of October 21 - 22.

Held in the Roxby Downs Auditorium, a gold coin donation will allow you to view a wonderful range quilts by some of the area’s most prolific quilters.

There will be a guest shop, hosted by Roxby’s own patchwork shop, Creative Trims and Crafts, a recipe book, tea towels and home made cushions available for purchase.

Devonshire tea will be offered and there will be a door prize and a quilt raffled.

Doors open at 10am.

All proceeds will go to a local charity.

Arts Matters

by Rodney Mitchell It’s that time of the year when things get hotter.

Working and playing outside get more difficult and space inside for play is at a premium. No group is more aware of this than the Working Party of the Arts and Culture Forum that looks at Arts Space in Roxby Downs.

We have been attempting to map out places in Roxby that might be turned into a temporary rehearsal space for a theatre group or a band.

At present our young people’s dance group POD practices in the art gallery in the afternoons after school.

It won’t take them long to bust out of that. Besides it is nice to have the gallery open to the public as much as possible.

So here’s the pitch. If you are the custodians of a space, preferably an air-conditioned space, in Roxby that might be useful to actors, directors, choreographers or indeed painters and sculptors, can you contact me in the Cultural Precinct and we may be able to solve a few of these problems?

We are also looking for businesses that might like to support a two-day workshop program.

We had Cirkidz pencilled in for the weekend of the October 28 and 29 but things got in the way.

They are now pencilled in for the weekend of December 2 - 3.

But I’ve put it to BHP Billiton that we might work together and bring the Cirkidz workshop up here for the BHP Billiton Family Day which recently dropped from the sky onto Saturday, December 9, which is the same day as the Traders are hosting the Xmas Pageant.

Anyway we’ll see how that pans out.

December is a bit late in the year for asking trainers to work outside. All the A&C Forum want to do is to give the children of Roxby a chance to try out a few physical theatre skills.

Things like stilt walking, juggling, balancing and acrobatics play a big part in what Cirkidz do.

It was originally started in Bowden Brompton as a program to support teenagers at risk and soon became popular with families all over suburban Adelaide.

Circus skills are good for young people. They require teamwork, trust and risk-taking. They involve things like juggling and balancing which are good for children’s intellectual development.

It’s all about left brain/right brain co-ordination apparently and it’s something the kids can continue with after the trainers have returned to base.

Anyway we’ll see a little left brain/right brain action at the street market on Saturday. Hopefully POD will be making an appearance and also watch out for a little Aerosol Art on an old car. We can call it CART. Car Art. Get it? Richard Elliot may be persuaded to demonstrate his skills with the can, out in the open for all of us to see.

Game 1 for the new season of night owls kicked off last Friday night.

16 teams nominated but unfortunately only 13 teams turned up for the season draw. Those teams that did turn up enjoyed a pleasant night of bowls.

Some teams had very good success in their first game and others struggled as it was their first game.

Better Halves defeated Team A (made up on the night) 74 - 46.

A new team from the Core Farm called the Rock Rollers came up against the seasoned Norms and held their own to only just lose 53 - 67.

Lekker Gogga, another new team, came up against a team of young graduates, the Matadors and won convincingly, with the final score 82 - 38.

NFI had a strong win against Mitre10, 74 - 46.

Enterprise played a new team of young tyros called Beenham’s Boobs, who enjoyed themselves even though they lost 41 - 79.

Yorkes had a steady win against the Pirates 76 - 44.

The big winner for the night was Beenham’s Bungups who annihilated Crowless, 104 - 16.

The Roxby Downs Bowling Club held an open day on Sunday with about 20 people turning up to try out

bowls.

Catches: Clafton Rogues won the toss in their first round match against Wanderers and started strongly, with first Wyatt and Trotta and later Wyatt and Ballestrin, forming solid top order partnerships.

Rogues went to the tea interval in the unusual position of 1/85 but immediately after the break the wheels started to fall off.

Ballestrin was the first to go and was quickly followed by the rest of the batting order.

Incredibly Rogues lost their final nine wickets for 16 runs, to stumble to 103 all out.

The destroyer for Wanderers was Ryan Paxton, who bagged five wickets and bowled accurately.

In reply Wanderers got off to a shaky start when Brent Harper mistimed a pull shot and was well caught by Clafton.

From there on it was one-way traffic as Selkirk and Smith dominated the bowling, although young Garland showed some promising signs with his right-arm legspin bowling.

Wanderers reached the meagre target with 20 overs remaining, which will set up an interesting finals rematch with Olympic Dam in coming weeks.

Oodnadatta six-a-side cricket competition Oodnadatta and those from surrounding properties were treated to some spectacular cricket on Saturday, October 7, at the Oodnadatta Race Course.

Younger members of the Oodnadatta Racing and Horse Sports committee organised a six-a-side cricket competition which saw seven teams from the area compete for some great prize money and a perpetual trophy, which had kindly been made by Robbie Schmidt of Leigh Creek.

The day fittingly ended in a draw with nothing to separate the two top teams, Coober Pedy and Mt Barry.

The Coober Pedy team, capably led by Mark Bell, consisted

of Martin Grava and Scott Mitchell from Coober Pedy and Christopher Stuart, Allen Warren and Henry Clarke from Oodnadatta.

Matthew Williams from Mount Barry rallied his troops, including Tony, Patrick and Todd Williams, Richard Abbott from Arckaringa and Ben Rose who came from Anna Creek.

Other sides competing were organised by the Oodnadatta School children, Christine Lennon, Greg Warren, Russell Prouse – all from Oodnadatta and Hamilton Station.

Congratulations to Martin Grava from Coober Pedy who picked up the Man of the Match award and also the award for Most Runs Scored.
