Vandals ‘could have been killed!’ ROXBY DOWNS…A spate of vandalism at the Roxby Downs Lions Park has raised fears for the safety of both vandals and community members alike. Council, police and electrical repairman have cautioned the anonymous vandals that they “could have killed themselves or someone else” after damaging electrical boxes, meters and lighting and exposing live wiring. The damage bill for the electrical repairs has been tallied at more than $4000 while almost another $3000 has gone into cleaning up glass, replacing 14 sprinklers and general repairs. “This wasn’t the only damage we dealt with over the school holidays,” Roxby Downs Council works manager Rob Barker told The Monitor this week. “At least three ‘butt-out’ bins along Richardson Place have been damaged - the replacement cost for each one is $375. “At the oval, vandals damaged locks on toilet doors at the football change rooms and the vents on the roof which will cost $1200 to repair. “All up, there was a cost of about $10,000 from vandalism during the school holidays. “It’s a big expense to ratepayers, but the dangerous practice of the vandals damaging electrical components and leaving exposed live electrical wiring is a major concern to the council. “Council is currently investigating the hiring of a security company to perform routine patrols of all council assets. “It is unfortunate that these kind of steps have to be taken in a country town but the cost of the damage to community facilities and the potential for accidents caused by the senseless actions of a number of out-of-control ratbags makes it a necessity.”

DAMAGE...Electrical equipment damaged by vandals at the Lions Park in Roxby Downs has raised safety concerns from local council and police spokesmen.

‘out-of-control ratbags’ set for a nasty shock Roxby Downs police are also considering stepping up programs to counter local vandalism. “Roxby Downs doesn’t have much vandalism in the scheme of things but it does increase dramatically in school holidays,” constable Scott Cheers said. “The vandals could have killed themselves this time – the electrician told us it was amazing that they weren’t hurt, or hurt someone passing by, especially with the damage done to the meter box on the tennis court lights.

“No one has yet been charged but police are seeking any information about the damage. “This is an instance where the vandalism didn’t just cost ratepayers money – it could have cost someone their life. “Local police are currently investigating methods to combat potential vandalism in the upcoming Christmas school holidays.” Roxby Downs Area School, in previous school holidays, has been a regular victim of vandalism. “Vandalism happens at the school

occasionally, generally during the holiday break,” Roxby Downs Area School principal Jim Michalanney told The Monitor. “Last year we had quite a number of incidents of broken windows and that cost thousands of dollars, but luckily, we haven’t had much this year. “No unauthorised people are to be on school grounds outside of school hours. “We appreciate the support of the community caring for, and looking over our school site – which people

regularly do.” Other regular school holiday vandalism targets in Roxby Downs over past years include main street business signage, BlockBuster, the Roxby Downs Swimming Pool and the LMS real estate display boards in Richardson Place.
