L

ake Mary has provided an oasis in the desert for the residents of Roxby Downs, an oasis that is slowly but surely fading to a mirage.

From literally a week after the 450 hectare lake was filled in January 2007, the people of Roxby Downs have taken the time to live up this lavish and exciting body of water only 40 kilometres from their doorsteps.

Countless individuals have purchased boats, skiing equipment and water recreation devices to add to the excitement of Roxby’s own slice of paradise and there are few who have not at least set eyes upon the shores of this magnificent lake.

Unfortunately with the harsh Australian drought, the bountiful waters of Lake Mary have slowly begun to recede, vanishing into the red dirt that is the outback.

Originally containing between five and six metres, the water level continues to fall, now estimated at approximately two metres in depth.

The Lake, as it has come to be known, is located on the pastoral station of Purple Downs south of Roxby Downs and has become a place of family entertainment for many.

The summer seasons see countless boat users roaring over the crystal clear waters of the lake, skiers practising their sport, campers enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and children splashing about in their own beach of the bush.

Sadly, without further rain or human intervention, the wonders of Lake Mary may only be available for a short while.

More than just a swoop

A

n Argentinean friend is worried that a cat is killing birds in her front garden. My friend said she has now found two lots of black and white feathers neatly placed in almost the same spot of her Roxby garden, and suspects a cat as the culprit.

I must confess that my overseas friend was upset that something was killing birds whereas I was more upset that they were black and white birds!! But I agreed with my friend that a cat was the likely culprit.

I explained to my friend the feathers could be that of a Magpie, but was more likely that of a Murray Magpie, depending on the size of the feathers. I explained the difference between the two birds but I know I confused things a little because I tried to explain why our states call the same bird different names.

I could have this wrong, so forgive me if you know better, but I tried to explain that the Murray Magpie is an Australian bird, that I think is correctly called a Magpie-lark. I said, South Australians call the Magpie-lark a Murray Magpie, Victorians and Western Australians call it the Mudlark, whereas those in NSW and Queensland refer to the bird as a Peewee!

My friend eventually understood but now I’m confused as to why we call the same bird so many different names except for its real name. Anyway, a few weeks went by, when my friend ran up to tell me, that a magpie is now swooping down on her as she rides her bike!

ing down on her as she rode her bike. I think my friend thought there was something I could do because of my great love and connection with them.

I tried to explain that spring heralds the start of warmer weather, new life, the end (groan) of the AFL footy season AND magpie swooping season!! But I don’t know how successful I was in convincing her of that.

I explained to my bewildered friend that she mustn’t take it personally because magpies and other swooping birds are likely to swoop through breeding season or to protect their territory, nest, eggs or young. I said, not all swoop, but the ones that do, apparently do so because they feel threatened.

I should have thought to say “patience is a virtue” because that’s what my dear mum has always said to me when I’ve been in a kafuffle…but I’m not too sure my indignant overseas friend would have wanted to hear that at the time.

Cyclists and posties on their motor bikes are often the target of swooping magpies through spring and I’ve always been outraged when heroes go and shoot birds like the magpie that swoops. I’m even more outraged when authorities order them to be shot.

The same can of course be said for other animals, birds, fish, and crocs etc that are shot for defending their turf, nest or young.

Anyway, my resourceful overseas friend, who didn’t like to be swooped on, thought of a way of dealing with the problem and rather than call for the magpie’s head…she simply initiated affirmative action that has solved the problem.

Just as psychology of mind power is the psychology of success and positive action is always the best action. My friend’s positive solution was the best solution because she thought of a way that wouldn’t disadvantage her or the bird.

Attitude can make a huge difference in our circumstances. When things happen to us…we have two choices.

We can take the high road approach or the low road approach. The high road is to remain positive and look for the good in our situation whereas the low road is to be inward looking and negative.

The high road approach helps us, and those around us, to feel good about who we are, and what we do whereas the low road approach can lead us, and others around us, into feeling negative and despondent. The choice is ours.

Keep in mind that our circumstances need not ever control our life because WE have the power to control our circumstances. Being positive helps us to get on top of our challenges and manage all life’s difficulties…it’s just that we need to be reminded of it sometimes.

Make soft dough with the atta flour and the cup

of water. Keep aside.

Take mashed potatoes, onion, salt, coriander leaves and powder, garam masala, amchur powder and chilli powder.

Mix it well.

Divide into 6 equal portions and keep aside.

Take the dough and divided into 6 equal portions.

Make a ball of each portion and roll out in the shape of a small circle.

Apply some ghee and stuff with potato masala in it and seal the edges carefully then again roll out in the shape of a disk. At last bake it on a hot plate with some ghee or oil on both sides until it is brown. Repeat for all portion.

Serve with curd or butter.

occurring in the region due to the growth in mining, tourism and industry, as well as changes in town population.

The key resulting themes in the Far North Region Land Use Framework are: • Population and industry growth, with a focus on Port Augusta, Roxby Downs and Coober Pedy.

• Building sustainable local service towns and communities, informed by strategic infrastructure and services planning.

• Strengthening the tourism industry in the outback and Flinders Rages, building on the region’s rich natural and cultural assets.

• Expansion of mining and defence industries and associated infrastructure.

• Sustainable and innovative approaches to securing water and energy supplies.

Once finalised, the framework will form an official part of the State Government’s Planning Strategy for SA. Once adopted it will provide formal direction to local councils and the private sector.

The draft framework has been released for two months of public consultation and runs until December 12.

A copy of the document can be found online from the Planning SA website at www.planning.sa.gov.au/go/fn-framework or hard copies are available at each of the local councils in the region.

Four informal community information sessions will also be held during the two month period with the Roxby Downs meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 5 at the Bowling Club starting at 5.30 pm. Copper Sands Stage Two comprises 47 three-bedroom and five four-bedroom modular houses. These houses will be constructed as an extension of the 33 original modular houses recently built off Agonis road on the southern side of town.

“This next release of houses will offer significant savings to buyers, with all houses being sold at cost and buyers able to benefit from BHP Billiton having negotiated the best price due to our ability to buy in bulk,” says Olympic Dam Vice President Human Resources, Paul Walters.

“Copper Sands Stage Two houses will be ready to occupy from settlement and will include solar hot water heaters, landscaping, 48m2 pergolas, garden sheds, paths, driveways and fences.”

Just like the first release of Copper Sands houses, each property will be subject to a caveat requiring that the purchaser reside in the property for a period of three years.

Copper Sands Stage Two houses are currently under construction and completion is expected by January 31, 2009.

After 5 years in Roxby Rebecca moves on

M

uch respected Constable Rebecca Schutz has packed her bags and said goodbye to Roxby Downs.

Originally from Murray Bridge, the ambitious constable has been in the SA Police Force for 12 years, and now after spending five and a half of those in Roxby Downs she has moved on to the big smoke.

Constable Schutz had her last day at the local Police Station on Wednesday, October 15, and on Friday she moved to the Holden Hill station in Adelaide.

“It’s exciting, it’s a good time to start a new chapter in my life,” said Constable Schutz.

Rebecca’s many friends threw her a goodbye party at the Tavern last

Wednesday, wishing her farewell.

“There is great community spirit in this town,” said Constable Schutz “I will be very sad to leave.”

Many of the people who have had the pleasure of working with Constable Schutz have left Roxby Downs, however The Monitor was able to catch up with Senior Constable Joseph O’Connell who said, “Rebecca has a wealth of knowledge which she can share around, and it will be a great loss to the community and the police, mainly the community though because Beck’s contributed a lot.”

Constable Rebecca Schutz was sad that she could not say goodbye personally to everyone, and wishes the best for the community.

Entries for the October Cargo competition close on Friday 31 October and the prize is a Nintendo DS. The Roxby Downs Youth Advisory Council will judge competition entries and the winning title will be announced at the BHP Billiton Family Day on Saturday 15 November, in conjunction with the public launch of the sculpture.

The ‘Cargo Public Art Project’ is a community partnership between BHP Billiton and Carclew Youth Arts. The project has been supported through the BHP Billiton Youth Arts Fund and the Government of South Australia through the South Australian Youth Arts Board and Arts SA, with assistance from the Municipal Council of Roxby Downs.

Car written off in accident

By Zak Zeptner At approximately 8 pm last Saturday a 17-year-old youth allegedly driving at excessive speeds lost control of his vehicle, crashing through the front fence of 17 Arcoona Street, and narrowly missing the master bedroom of number 15.

The Commodore sedan is said to have been driven at such high speeds it veered off the road and tore through a rock enclosed garden into the front yard of number 17, causing damage to a pergola and stationary vehicle.

Police estimate the damage to cost approximately $7,000 - $8,000, adding the Commodore was a complete write-off.

While no one was injured in the incident, the driver was reportedly taken to hospital for general observations where he spent several hours of the night.

The SES and CFS were also in attendance, assisting in securing the scene in a safe manner.

Police would like to thank the volunteers who assisted and ensured the area was safe.

It is alleged the youth was seen speeding around town with another vehicle when he lost control of his Commodore.

The youth was later charged with driving without due care and the second driver, who was not involved in the accident, was charged with driving in a manner dangerous and driving without due care. Both males will appear in court at a later date.

Police report no alcohol was involved in the incident.

While no one was injured in the accident, witnesses

say it could have been a tragedy.

Rachel Rudiger was innocently taking the rubbish out when the vehicle roared off the road and as her husband Brett describes, a few metres over and she could have been seriously injured or worse.

“We’re pretty shocked,” said an angered Mr Rudiger.

“We’ve got kids inside and someone else’s sleeping over too.”

The Rudigers were outraged over the incident, claiming unless driving laws are tightened someone in Roxby Downs is going to be killed.

Police are warning all potential ‘hoon’ drivers to be

aware of the consequences of their actions, stating this accident could have potentially been fatal considering the amount of people who walk the streets at this time of night.

Police remind the public reckless driving can have lifelong consequence which people fail to foresee and strongly urge drivers to ensure their behaviour reflects that foresight.

Andamooka streets named

A

ndamooka may not be permanently printed on the map, however, that does not mean it should be void of the simple necessities of a town.

Currently, Andamooka has no street names, making navigation difficult for the outsiders as technically, every lot is located on Government Road.

This is soon to change with the introduction of names to the town’s many streets and roads.

“The government approached us and asked us to come up with street names for the town or else they would,” said APOMA Chairman Peter Allen.

APOMA called for suggestions from residents and received approximately 20 names which were used, however, a considerable amount of other names were needed to fill the 105 streets of Andamooka.

The APOMA Committee suggested a range of names inspired by locals and relevant terms throughout the community which were displayed for the public to approve or contest.

With the names selected, such as Opal Creek Boulevard, Buza Hill Road and Polish Jenny Street to name a few, they were sent to the Government to be gazetted, a process which is currently under consideration and taking considerable time.

“I would think they would be gazetted within the next six months but we just don’t know,” said Mr Allen.

The names chosen in honour of the locals are quite well know throughout the community, as Mr Allen describes, with many residents being able to say “I remember that bloke or I know that woman.”

“There’s a fairly broad slice of humanity.”

The uniqueness of the street names come from a desire to avoid the dull and monotonous titles the town would have received had the government been responsible for them.

“We would have had First street all the way through to 105th,” commented Mr Allen.

There were some, unfortunately, who did not want the streets of Andamooka to receive titles, though as it was pointed out to APOMA, the emergency services in town are run by locals who know where everyone lives, however, if relief services were to come to town during an emergency, the response time would be long and drawn out as locations would be unknown.

“Places will be a lot easier to pick up on the map,” said Mr Allen.

The proposed street names will feature references to locals of Andamooka and relevant terms throughout the community.

The program teaches volunteers basic and advanced rescue skills and salvation skills, supplying the knowledge to help an everyday person save a life.

If you are over the age of 16 you can get involved in the program, pending you pass a compulsory police and health check.

SES is a volunteer based program that responds to any emergency where their help is required.

Letters to the Editor Lost faith Sir – I’m writing to express my disappointment with the response I received on August 9 at the Roxby Downs Hospital. I saw a doctor on a Saturday morning after a sleepless night coughing. I presented with a sore right side around my ribs, cough, shortness of breath and generally rundown. He listened to my chest, checked in my mouth and then sent me home to get some rest and gargle with salt water. He didn’t prescribe anything due to me being seven months pregnant.

In the afternoon I then started to vomit and the pain had spread to both sides of my ribs. My partner drove me to emergency. I waited an hour to see a doctor and the same doctor I saw that morning appeared. He did not take any obs. He listened to my complaints with his hands in his pockets then told me I need to relax at home. My partner was sent to Woolworths to get me cough mixture. Being pregnant I was concerned for the baby and asked if I could listen to the heartbeat. That was answered with a no, “the midwife only does that and we only call her in if it’s an emergency”.

After a sleepless night at home, we headed to Port Augusta to stay the night

on our way through to Adelaide. Not sleeping all night nor feeling any better I went to Port Augusta hospital. After hearing my symptoms they admitted me, giving oxygen and pain relief when needed. After no improvement I was given a chest x-ray which showed pneumonia. Due to being under 34 weeks pregnant I was flown to Adelaide as they did not want to jeopardize bubs or myself.

After three weeks in hospital on strong medication and numerous x-rays and scans I was released feeling a lot better. Port Augusta hospital made the right decision to fly me out as my baby had to be delivered 6 weeks early due to my condition.

The doctors at the Port Augusta hospital and the Flinders Medical Centre were absolutely fantastic.

Unfortunately I have lost all faith in the medical team at the Roxby hospital. If it had of been a child they may not have made it.

People do not trust the banks anymore, hell not even the banks trust each other and they are in the best position to know.

Where is the opposition while all this is going on?

We don’t have any.

To say that g iv ing money to banks to increase capital levels will revitalise interbank lending infers that there are banks without these troubles and have prudent lending practices,have not bought worthless investments from other financial institutions and have the trust of the public in general. It would be complete lunacy to stop good banks from cannibalising the corrupt and inefficient opposition.

The American government has pumped $900 billion into their banks. That is the equivalent of buying every new house built in the U.S.A for the last three years.i.e. 1,000,000 houses times $300,000 per house times three years. It has done absolutely nothing and they only have a mortgage default rate of 2.25%. Even if 10% are on the verge of default that is 5,000,000 out the 50,000,000 current mortgages the government has put in over half the money to give everyone close to defaulting on their mortgages a house for free.

The real problem is that people do not want to buy banks investment products stopping the flow of money around the economy.

Now it is almost certain that reselling car loans to investors to keep money flowing in the automotive industry is about to freeze the potential for severe economic calamity is certain .

Sixteen million new cars are bought in U.S.A every year at an average of about $40,000 each is $640billion double the housing market.

If the banks banks cannot on sell their car loans they will have to do one of three things.

Increase rates to car loans to make them at-

tractive enough to on sell probably in line with credit card rates of around 20% as this is the only part of the derivatives market that has not collapsed.

Increase the deposit required to purchase a car so that money may be reloaned .

Increase the amount of available income a borrower has available before they may get a car loan though this does not help in these short term with availability of money for new loans.

The government is going to have to restart banking by making money available for car loans. In future years they may be able to sell these car banks.

If the automotive industry were to collapse all car builders would lose their job, a big percentage of car sellers and a percentage people who rely on those peoples’ incomes would lose their jobs, creating more homeloan defaulters. Unemployment helps create unemployment.

It would not be necessary for sales to stop completely as a factory has to produce a certain amount of vehicles to breakeven. The argument that General Motors and Ford produce too many large cars is not right as the price of oil in $US has dropped by almost 50% .Toyota a manufacturer of mostly small cars sales are down by 17%.

More respect for local sport Sir - Once again the Junior Basketball Committee is writing a letter to the paper regarding the lack of respect some parents have.

We are astounded at the amount of parents that assume because they are friends or have been spoken to by a committee member that their child is automatically placed into a team.

We can appreciate how easy it would be to not have to complete forms but we have to meet legal requirements placed by SA Country Basketball for insurance purposes.

All forms that remain unsigned by a parent or guardian will cause us to take the strong stance of not allowing the child to take the court to play their game in case of injury.

We would also like to address the parents who have entered the Sportspower store and have verbally abused the staff.

The staff at the store has no input into the running of the Junior Basketball.

They are kind enough to hand out forms and keep them at their store for the committee members to collect. We are sure if this continues we will lose this valuable asset and people will have to chase around a lot more to get their forms and return them so their child can play basketball.

Please if you have a problem contact a committee member or better yet join the committee and make a difference.

As all of our committee members are volunteers and most work full time a lot more support and less criticism would be greatly appreciated when decisions have been made. We are sure you would all appreciate there are many hours of work put into organising a basketball season. Community comes together It’s hard to believe after months of build-up to Roxby’s first ever Relay for Life event, it has been and gone!

What came out of the Relay will live on for months if not years, as Roxby found its community spirit and a deep empathy of others. It’s always been there, but never quite exposed like it was during the Relay for Life.

The emotional roller coaster ride of that weekend was one most participants didn’t expect, but they are wealthier for the knowledge they gleaned from survivors and carers who told their previously private anecdotes while fighting this disease which touches almost everyone in some way. They are closer, because they threw off inhibitions about the disease people don’t talk about, and they discovered they can lift each others’ spirits with a bit of fun along the way.

A week later people are talking about this event that saw Roxby come together as one. People from all walks of life, all ages and many countries played a part somewhere. They either attended some of the many functions as teams were hell bent on raising money, joined teams or helped out on the day by doing what they could to support the more than 200 people at the town oval. Most people in Roxby contributed something in the lead-up to this event and some doubled up by doing more on the actual weekend of the relay.

For the town to raise $64,000 in its first year there is a great sense of pride and achievement. For 17 teams to raise such a large amount is fantastic; to do it in year one is outstanding; and wanting to do it again is inspirational.

Reportedly teams are lining up to do it again next year, but the organisers are predicting it will mean more if it is held bi-annually and sponsors are not hit too often albeit the Cancer Council is such a worthy charity.

Several people who have lived here for more than a decade say this is the event that has shown Roxby’s true character and spirit.

Congratulations must go to the Relay for Life Committee, the teams and all who contributed, but mostly to those survivors who have shown us all - there is hope.

CEO of Citect, Mr Chris Crowe and CEO of Schneider Electric Mr Lionel Finidori, both from Sydney welcomed guests to the the opening of their office building on Tutop Street saying it was a sign of their commitment to Roxby Downs and most of all their ongoing commitment to BHP Billition.

Mr Crowe explained how Citect had been involved at Olympic Dam for 12 years and had grown with the company to where they are now world leaders in control technolgy to the mining and other major industries.

Citect is still using this site (Olympic Dam) as best of class in terms of the biggest site using Citect locally. “It is still recognised as the biggest Citect installation globally.â€?

He thanked BHP Billiton for standing behind Citetc and for its continued support of the product which is going through another upgrade with version eight already being developed. “The injection of Sch-

neider in to the company has really helped us a lot,� he said. With an injection of capital the company had been able start development on their next generation platform which will be announced in 2010. “It’s very exciting times for Citect and I think it is an exciting time for our customers,� said Mr Crowe.

Getting value for money in a sluggish market The property market has slowed considerably and I am now getting questions from readers asking whether the cost of their planned improvements will be recouped when they sell. The answer is: It depends on the improvements.

Some work will return value almost instantly and actually assist the sale in a sluggish market; other projects will take years to recoup. The golden rule is to spend in proportion to the overall value of your home and those of surrounding properties. There is no point in investing $80,000 in a kitchen if homes in your area are selling for less than say $600,000.

That does not mean you shouldn’t consider modernising the kitchen or bathroom – they are always good selling points – but do it within the price range expectations of where you live. If you are in doubt, a local real estate agent will probably be able to offer advice.

Expanding the size of your home is usually a good way of getting back what you have spent plus a little. A rumpus room at the back, or a parents retreat as an extra storey should easily cover your costs when you come to sell. However, always ensure

Time running out for lake From the front page

“If we don’t get at least three or four inches of rain and people are still using the lake after Christmas, I’ll be surprised,” said local lake user Ross Orr. “It’s great recreation, somewhere to go and it gets packed out; it’s good for the town.”

With the water level dropping, safety becomes a concern.

Lake Mary is a rural outback body of water and as such is littered with countless trees and shrubbery which are beginning to emerge as the levels drop.

This can cause serious problems for boats and skiers as the barren branches of partially submerged trees are sharp and can render serious damage if not avoided.

As the land is the property of BHP Billiton, the company is urging all users of the lake to enjoy its splendour in a safe and responsible manner.

“With the water level dropping, boat users and skiers should keep and eye out for ‘snags’ such as trees and bushes which may now be just under the water level,” said Olympic Dam Land Management

Advisor, Peter Paisley.

Wishes of the community centre around Lake Mary being refilled, however, unless a large rain occurs in the future, and with the heat of summer fast approaching, it seems this pastime is nearing its end.

One option available to sustain the water level is for the lake to be refilled manually, unfortunately this appears unlikely.

“The lake will remain in its natural state,” said Mr Paisley.

“There are no plans to refill it.”

Left to the harshness of nature, the residents of Roxby Downs and surrounding regions who enjoy the recreation of Lake Mary will have to find another way to entertain themselves during the warmer weather.

“I’d like to see the lake stay full and the creek as well but that’s just dreaming,” said Ross Orr. A realist, Ross has already planned his summer holiday to exclude the vastly depleted lake, instead returning to the Riverland to continue his skiing adventures.

What lies in store for Lake Mary, only time will tell with the life of this marvellous water body resting in the palm of Mother Nature’s hand.

Barb Taylor is kept busy checking on fish tanks and taking care of the many varieties of fish at the Centre.

The fishing’s fine at Woomera While you wouldn’t expect to see too many fish in the arid outback, it is more surprising to find Woomera hosts a number of sea fish.

From benthic invertebrates to fish, crustaceans and other organisms, the underworld inhabitants of Australia’s marine system are on show at the town’s Marine Centre and it is another of those places you should make the effort to see when next in the area.

Its concept was conceived in 2005 after the suc-

cess of the school’s aquaculture project, which today boasts Barramundi expected to be plate size by Christmas.

Students and community helpers have put in many hours in recent years to develop a unique concept for a desert town.

Barb Taylor is one of several helpers at the Marine Centre and says it always amazes visitors they have cold and warm water fresh fish as well as a variety of very colourful sea fish including the

very popular Clown Fish or “Nemo”, a favourite with all the children who visit.

She said originally the Woomera Marine Centre was going to be attached to the school but after the initial plans were finalised it was decided to move it into the Village where it has more exposure to the travelling public.

Barb said it is a big job to clean and maintain the tanks and to keep the fish healthy.

There is a special room set aside for a “fish hos-

pital” where some fish are kept in isolation if they are not well and there are several tanks which are nursery tanks to prevent the larger fish from eating eggs and the very small baby fish.

For those working at the centre and with the help of the students at the school, there has been a lot of study and trial and error getting it to the point where the Woomera Marine Centre is somewhat of an authority on how to keep and breed fish varieties in controlled areas.

Safety at the work site starts with you!

Each year SA Government organisation Safe Works takes a seminar around to the towns and cities of South Australia, and it was in the far north last week.

Roxby Downs is the home of many employees who work for BHP Billiton Olympic Dam, which is Australia’s largest underground mine.

The seminar focuses on mine workers and emphasises the importance of safety in the workplace.

“We may have the safe equipment, but we have to operate it safely, it’s

like buying a new car with air bags and other safety features, you have your safe work environment, now you have to operate it correctly, and we want to show you how to do that,” said John Hatty a BHP speaker at the seminar.

The seminar started at 9 am, first focussing on safety, including statistics in the workplace, which showed that 1 out of 143 people who work their whole life in the mining industry is expected to die through an accident.

The seminar also covered contractor-principal relations and changes to licensing requirements for high risk plant operators.

“Attendance this year was almost double what it was last year (in Roxby Downs),” said Graeme Sauer from SafeWork SA. The main hope now is for the attendees to take the information on board and apply it in the workplace, “at the end of the day safety comes back on you, the worker,” said John Hatty.

Mental illness is not the end

M

ental Health is an issue many neglect, preferring to hide it in the shadows and try to deal with it quietly, an act which is only creating further issues.

Yes it is scary and yes it forces people to realise they are no longer in control but by acknowledging mental health issues, we move one step closer to fighting the sickness.

Recently Roxby Downs was treated to the personal experiences of people touched by mental illness in the hopes to spread awareness.

Jo Dawson, who was among the mental health workers visiting Roxby, is a woman of incredible strength and will power.

Jo was diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago and has dealt with a range of unfathomable experiences throughout her illness.

“My saying is: don’t let the situation control you, take control of the situation,” said Jo. She feels better now, however she still has her bad days, but this strong minded woman knows she must push through it.

“I picture there is someone behind me literally pushing me forward.”

Schizophrenia causes Jo to hear voices no one else can hear and even become another person.

“It’s strange but the voices get so bad you just have to answer them.

“I didn’t even realise I was doing it when it all began but now I just walk into a phone booth and talk into the phone, which sometimes helps.”

Jo enjoys hearing from others in similar situations to herself as it allows her to learn new ways of dealing with her illness.

“You just have to try new things and keep trying to deal with the situation.”

Fortunately, Jo knows she is not alone in her struggle and surrounds herself with positive influences.

“My 16 year old son comes up to me and says he loves me, that I’m very special and he even holds my hand, which makes me feel better.

“He’s seen it all and it just shows he cares.”

Jo’s greatest piece of advice for anyone suffering a mental illness is to not stop taking your medication.

“You might feel good one day and decide not to take your pills today but the next day it gets worse, so keep taking your medication.”

effects of schizophrenia, friend Jan has been required to deal with it from afar.

Jan Roberts has suffered depression and is a mother of a daughter who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, yet she still has the strength and persistence to campaign for metal heath, spreading awareness throughout the country.

Jan, who raised her daughter to be tough, believed her child’s sudden change in behaviour was simply her getting back at Jan. Unfortunately this was not the case as Jan found out when her daughter attempted suicide and once she was diagnosed with the mental illness, she set out to learn all she could about it.

“I have a great understanding of mental illnesses but I could never know what people go through, not the way Jo does,” said Jan. As a mother, Jan found it difficult to deal with her daughter’s illness, fearing what Jo Dawson and Jan Roberts have both been touched personally by mental illness and courageously told she may do to herself.

“It was one of the hardest times when their stories to people in Roxby Downs recently. my daughter was diagnosed, until I finally realised as a mother I couldn’t cure her.

“It’s a hard thing to get through your head that you can’t fix your child, you can only support them.”

The support, Jan says, is fantastic.

Mental illness is a current issue that cannot be swept under the rug or ignored in the hopes it will go away.

One in three people suffer some form of mental illness for it does not discriminate.

By becoming aware of the situation, by learning there is help and it is okay to admit you suffer a metal illness, we can come one step closer to fighting the sickness and creating a happier world for all.

Huge thanks must go to everyone involved in the fight against mental illness and everyone is urged to become more aware and to seek help if you are suffering; you are not alone.

Arid Recovery nominated for Landcare award

he Olympic Dam Arid Recovery Project has been named a finalist in the National Landcare Awards.

The project is a joint initiative between The Friends of Arid Recovery, BHP Billiton, the Department for Environment and Heritage and the University of Adelaide and has provided outstanding work in the hopes of reviving the Australian environment.

Arid Recovery has been responsible for creating the nation’s largest non-coastal enclosure to eliminate feral animals and introducing locally extinct animals and native plants.

“We’re pretty honoured to have been nominated,” said Helen Crisp, an ecologist with the program.

“It’s a great recognition of Arid Recovery and if we win, it will be fantastic.”

The Arid Recovery Project offers a range of initiatives to help improve the native environment and employees of the project find themselves involved in everything from feral eradication to monitoring and research, with no day being the same.

The project employs a collection of

workers and volunteers, with the majority of work occurring in the field.

“There are so many amazing things to do at Arid Recovery, unfortunately there are not enough hours in the day to do it all,” said Helen.

A great proportion of the work done at the Arid Recovery occurs thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

“A lot of our stuff wouldn’t get done without volunteers and there are always opportunities for more to put their hand up.”

Volunteer work for the Arid Recovery can provide people with a fantastic feeling and expand their knowledge of the native environment with jobs ranging from plants to animals and pest management.

“The ultimate goal of Arid Recovery is to see the locally extinct species no longer locally extinct; to see them in the wild again,” commented Helen.

With the hard work of these ecologically friendly workers and volunteers, the Arid Recovery will continue to thrive, providing fantastic services to the surrounding environment in the hopes of maintaining the wonders of the Australian outback.

Robertson’s Rambles Innocence or imbecile?

I have recently encountered some unique conversations that left me scratching my head and wondering whether that person was innocent in their comments or merely an imbecile.

Don’t get me wrong; I completely understand people’s ability to have a “blonde” moment or being vacant minded when chatting to another person. I am not saying that people don’t have bad days and blurt out whatever is on their mind. In this column, I am addressing consistent inappropriate contributions to conversations.

I can conceive the idea of direct and opinionated conversation. In fact, these types of discussions are brilliant for brain stimulation and healthy awareness. There is, however, a fine line between having an opinion and being plain rude.

Sarcasm can be used in any given conversation to lighten the mood and create humour. Often this will be received light-heartedly. However, sometimes people choose to use an undertone of spite which alters the use of sarcasm. It is spiteful sarcasm that is the demise of a healthy conversation and soon renders a participant uncomfortable. Sarcasm is a difficult tone to apply as the sentence adopts a double meaning – if you do not know someone well, they may not interpret the phrase as you intended.

By understanding the personality of whom you are talking to, you should be able to know when sarcasm can be applied.

It is important to maintain an awareness of the relationship you hold with the person to whom you are speaking. By understanding their character, you should be able to judge what level of honest opinion you can use without offending them. For example: you may be able to tell a sister or close friend that her jeans are too tight, but to a stranger, this comment would be taken offensively.

The level of consideration that you have for those around you can be the difference between being nasty or nice. Being over-opinionated can be unbearable and excruciating for those listening to you; constantly having something to say, or a point to contradict does not make you an intelligent person, but instead you will come across as arrogant and inconsiderate.

As aforementioned, I can understand when someone is having a bad day and may retaliate inappropriately but when someone is constantly impolite there is no excuse.

Perhaps we should step back and consider the rude person for a second: maybe they are going through a crisis and don’t know how to deal with their issues, so instead create issues for other people. Maybe they thrive on watching other people react to the comments? Alternatively, they simply have no awareness of their actions and the consequences of their behaviour.

Either way, the person who is constantly rude clearly is not a happy person and should probably have a long hard look at themselves and ask – am I happy? A one-off rude comment can be taken with a pinch of salt. But an incessant application of inappropriate conversation is bound to have an effect.

A conversation I recently endured left me astonished, but it also made me realise what conversation application I will avoid adopting. No one is perfect and we are all bound to slip with our manners, but by monitoring sarcastic humour, interpersonal awareness and opinion, we all may be able to avoid ongoing imbecilic behaviour.

• Use correct breathing techniques – breathing out on the extraneous part of the exercise (the hard part) • Always warm up the muscles that are to be targeted when using weighted exercises. Never use weights on cold muscles!!!

• Always stretch after a workout – this releases lactic acid in the muscles and aids in recovery. It will also improve flexibility if done on a continued and regular basis.

Zeppy’s reviews Movie : What Happens in Vegas

Laughable but predictable

T

he ever popular notion of what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas has been overdone in Hollywood with countless comedies attempting to create an entertaining movie around the concept. What Happens in Vegas is an interesting, albeit unoriginal, addition to the Vegas movies.

Starring Cameron Diaz as Joy McNally and Ashton Kutcher as Jack Fuller, What Happens in Vegas centres around two completely opposite individuals who escape to Sin City and wind up married. Throw in $3 million dollars and you have a story. When Jack wins the money using Joy’s quarter, the two argue over who owns the money. Taking it to court, the judge freezes the cash and orders them to live together as husband and wife for six months. What follows is a series of laughable complications between the newlyweds in an over the top, all American style film.

The movie begins slowly with what appears to be subtle humour, though it fails to be funny, however moves into the outrageous American style chaos that passes for humour. The end is extremely predictable and corny and while the acting is passable, the lack of originality seriously lowers the enjoyment of the film. The concepts throughout the movie are all extremely far fetched and highly improbable and seem only to act as a way to provide comedy.

The only role I found at all convincing was that of Joy McNally’s friend Tipper. Almost as though watching a grown up Juno, the dark sadistic attitude of the character provided the majority of laughs for me. Whether it be a simple sarcastic comment or a fully fledged death threat, Tipper was by far the star of What Happens in Vegas.

If you’re looking for an unintelligent laugh, this is your movie but that’s all you should expect from this film.

Book – The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Man or Monster?

ost know the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, however, I was surprised upon reading this exhilarating novella by R. L. Stevenson that my conception of the tale was slightly different to the actual story. I cannot speak for everyone but the modernisation of the tale had me believing along the lines that Mr Hyde was an actual monster. Boy was I wrong.

It’s a classic and as such, the writing reflects the period, however most of the novella is easy to read and understand, and only goes for 90 pages, making it a quick and interesting read.

For those who are unfamiliar with the story, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde revolves around the appearance of a rather unscrupulous character named

Mr Hyde who appears to have a connection with the well respected Dr Jekyll. The novella is a mystery tale following the observations of Mr Utterson and his desire to uncover the truth concerning Mr Hyde.

What I found marvellous about this tale is the way in which Mr Hyde is portrayed.

He is not the giant monster eating children as he is often depicted but rather a man with a terrifying feel about him. The beauty of this character is the way he mimics the very nature inside all human beings; that we all have the capacity for evil within us.

While the final explanation of Mr Hyde takes on a science fiction feel, the tale remains completely believable, leaving the reader with the sense it could be possible to achieve what Dr Jekyll did.

structed. The novella follows the standard third person narrative throughout the majority of the text however Stevenson changes the narrative point of view in the final chapters as a way of better explaining the mystery of the story; an act I believe made the novella so successful.

he Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a book that has endured over time and will continue to do so. I highly recommend this thrilling read to anyone with an interest in the nature of humanity and the concepts of good and evil. Even if this book does not appeal to you, go ahead and have a quick read (it’s only 90 pages) and discover the true story behind the infamous Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Due to the running of the triathlon Burgoyne St, and a portion of Olympic Way and Richardson Place, will be closed to traffic on Saturday 25th October 2008 from 7:30 am to 12:00pm. (Please note that setting up for the closures will commence about 6:30am.)

Local traffic will have access along and across Burgoyne St to the nearest cross roads. Traffic marshals will be in place to assist you.

Abandoned and Illegally Parked Vehicles The Roxby Downs Council is concerned with the number of vehicles including, trailers and caravans which have been either parked or abandoned on the road edge, as well as on the council verge between the road and the property boundary. Parking illegally in Richardson Place is also a concern. Council in the first instance will target the owners of the offending vehicles by issuing written warnings to the owners detailing what charges could be implemented if the vehicle is not moved or parked correctly. Areas to be targeted are as follows: •Parking in disabled zones without a permit.

•Parking in the bus zone opposite Richardson Place.

•Parking near pedestrian crossing to drop off and pick up school children.

•Freight vehicles parked near pedestrian crossings to pick up and deliver goods.

•Parking on the boundary between residence and road.

•Leaving vehicles including Trailers and Caravans on roads for over 24 hours.

•Parallel parking – the driver must position the vehicle to face in the direction in which vehicles could lawfully travel on that part of the road If the offending vehicle is not removed or parked correctly, under the Local Government Act, Council has the power to instigate infringement Notices and/or impound the vehicles for the noted offence. Please consider others in the Roxby Downs area and for safety reasons as well as appearance of the community, please park correctly.

Parking Residents should be aware of significant expiation fees for parking in a bus zone $79.00 and parking in a disabled zone $235. Other fines are stopping in loading zone $33, failing to park on road $33 (except in median strip parking area) in accordance with rule- parallel parking and failing to park vehicle wholly within parking bay $20.

Many advantages of walking to work

N

ational Walk or Ride to Work Day came to Roxby Downs last Wednesday, October 15.

Community members were encouraged to ride their bikes or walk to work instead of driving a car.

The Council, Leisure Precinct and The Monitor came together on Wednesday morning to have a breakfast, after many of

them walked or rode their bikes to work.

Family Youth Officer, Tom Beever organised the event a couple of weeks ago and was happy to see about 25 get involved.

“For the little difference we have made by walking today I want to say thankyou?” Tom said to those who attended the breakfast.

Tom sent pamphlets out to local businesses making

them aware of the walk to work day in the hope they would encourage their staff to give it a go and help reduce carbon emissions whilst gaining fitness.

The event highlighted the significant health and environmental benefits that can be achieved by leaving the car at home even for one day. It would be even better if that happened on a more regular basis.

“Walking is such a sim-

ple activity, yet the majority of Australians don’t do enough of it.

This is one of the primary reasons that over half of our population is overweight or obese (not to mention the related risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol,

diabetes, arthritis and even depression),” said Dr John Lang Managing Director Good Health Solutions.

“WTWD is held annually to remind all Australians that walking is good for your health, good for the environment, and best of all - it’s free.”

Peter Keller cooked a magnificent breakfast for those who made the effort of walking or riding to work last week.

A new annual event for Roxby Downs is the Triathlon, and what better way to get involved in the community than to run together.

The Triathlon will be held on Saturday, October 25, and the community is encouraged to cheer on all competitors as they pit their strength and stamina in the three phases, running, swimming and bike riding.

Registration for the event begins at 7am at the back of the pool near the club car park.

Junior briefing begins at 7am and briefing for all other categories will be at 8am.

The race officially kicks off at 7.35 am on Saturday morning and event organiser Bridget Fenoughty is hoping for a great turnout, with the expectation that everyone involved remembers to be sun safe.

“Don’t forget to apply sunscreen at least half an hour prior to competing,” said Bridget.

Competitors are also encouraged to make sure they drink plenty of water before, during and after the event to ensure they maintain hydration levels.

The event is organised for fun, so don’t go out too hard straight away, it is important to pace yourself over the whole distance.

The NAB CUP is coming to Roxby Downs No, not the AFL NAB cup but the Roxby Downs Golf NAB Cup. This Saturday is the inaugural NAB Cup competition at the Roxby Downs Golf Course. The competition is a four person ambrose and will include the Sporting Club Challenge.

All local sporting clubs are invited to nominate teams to represent their club. There will be heaps of prizes to be won including prizes for the best dressed team, so teams are encouraged to come dressed in their favourite teams colours whether it be AFL, Rugby, Soccer or the local sporting teams.

There will also be the NAB Rising Star award for the best team whose members are aged 25 years or under. The golf will be followed by a BBQ and the golfers families are welcome to

come out for the BBQ. There will be a face painter to help keep the children amused. Hit off is between 7.30am and 8.30am.

Cricket season “blasts off” at Woomera with a double header 650 runs in first fixture

By Gerard Secker The Roxby Districts cricket season got off to a memorable start with an absorbing double header at Woomera’s O’Donoghue oval that produced over 650 runs and a close finish in the second match.

The day began with the Woomera Redbacks winning the toss and electing to bat against Olympic Dam and posting a credible total of 144 led by their new skipper Adam Willis, with 29 as an opener and valuable runs coming in the middle order from Mick Ingold and Steve White, with 25 each.

Devil’s recruit Phil Stacey took 4/32 in his debut while Mick Hoffmann and Adam Warren collected two wickets each.

Both sides were without several players but Woomera’s attack was rather thread bare and unable to contain the free hitting Charl Botes, Darren Leonard and Nigel Shinnick and conceded the runs required for victory in the 24th over.

Mick Ingold was the most successful bowler for the home side with the scalps of Craig Nichols and Stacey.

Selkirk posts 101

Wanderer’s leading batsman Ryan Selkirk about to take another run on his way to a great opening of the season, scoring 101. Taking the new ball for the Rogues is Sam Nethery who toiled hard in the early overs.

The day/night match saw Wanderers bat first and aided by some particularly poor fielding by last season’s premiers set a very challenging total of 183 for the loss of seven wickets.

Roxby Rogues were left to rue several dropped catches as Ryan Selkirk posted the first century of the season and fellow opener Craig Wilson made a half century in an opening stand of 151 runs.

Newly elected skipper for Rogues, Randall Wyatt claimed 5/18 to slow the carnage and then followed up with a 50 of his own as an opener as they set about having a go at pinching the points.

His dismissal was a blow for their hopes but belligerent batting by Steve Heit, Rick Walker, Dan Haines and Kane Benson got them ever closer to their goal.

The scene was set with Rogues requiring eleven runs off the last over with four wickets in hand and Ryan Paxton to bowl the last over, but two dismissals and no boundaries saw the dream evaporate,requiring a six off the last ball to draw the contest.

In what could well be described as a few seconds of “infectious madness” the Wanderer’s fieldsmen conceded five runs off a shot that barely left the infield and scraped home by the barest possible margin.

Brent Johnson led the way with three wickets for the Swaggies and Paxton took two including one in the drama-laden last over.

There should be some very interesting clashes to come this season as several experienced players become available for all sides.

The day was punctuated with farewell presentations to Woomera and association stalwart Bob Jolly.
