ake Mary has provided an oasis in the desert for the residents of Roxby Downs, an oasis that is slowly but surely fading to a mirage.
From literally a week after the 450 hectare lake was filled in January 2007, the people of Roxby Downs have taken the time to live up this lavish and exciting body of water only 40 kilometres from their doorsteps. Countless individuals have purchased boats, skiing equipment and water recreation devices to add to the excitement of Roxby’s own slice of paradise and there are few who have not at least set eyes upon the shores of this magnificent lake. Unfortunately with the harsh Australian drought, the bountiful waters of Lake Mary have slowly begun to recede, vanishing into the red dirt that is the outback.
Originally containing between five and six metres, the water level continues to fall, now estimated at approximately two metres in depth. The Lake, as it has come to be known, is located on the pastoral station of Purple Downs south of Roxby Downs and has become a place of family entertainment for many. The summer seasons see countless boat users roaring over the crystal clear waters of the lake, skiers practising their sport, campers enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and children splashing about in their own beach of the bush. Sadly, without further rain or human intervention, the wonders of Lake Mary may only be available for a short while. Continued on page 9
