Additional Ambulance for Roxby Downs

Roxby Downs Ambulance Service’s volunteer team leader, Dawn Kroemer, explained how the second ambulance had been brought to Roxby Downs. “Bringing an additional vehicle to town had been discussed for a long time and a vehicle finally became available for us.” “Our new ambulance is a 4X4 – just like the other one - but it’s much lighter and means we can be a little more

The new vehicle will save the Ambulance Service time and will also be used as a back-up vehicle. It will remain at the station while the main vehicle was on hand at sporting events. “Before we would have to arrange months in advance to have a second vehicle brought up from Pt Augusta if we were going to cover horse racing events.”
“Now we have more flexibility,” she said. “It’s very handy to have a second vehicle in Roxby Downs because we have a rapidly growing population in town and you never know when we might need two ambulances,” she said. While the latest ambulance is new to Roxby Downs, it is not a ‘new vehicle’ and was actually passed on from Pt Augusta. “It is definitely a great resource for the town to have available to use and
for our volunteers in the service it’s also a nice new toy to play with,” she said. Like most volunteer organisations in Roxby Downs, the Ambulance Service relies on volunteers to donate their time. Mrs Kroemer said there were approximately 15 – 20 people volunteering for the Ambulance Service and sometimes it was difficult to have enough people available to work if required. “At the moment there are about eight volunteers who are out of town, which can make things difficult.”
“We have to have two people on standby at a time but they cannot be people who are at home alone with children or anything like that – they can’t leave young children at home by themselves,” she said. “It means we have to cover for people who get called in to work or get sick – it can be a little tricky sometimes,” Mrs Kroemer said.
