$100,000 Raised for RFDS ROXBY DOWNS…A record amount of more than $100,000 has been pledged to the Royal Flying Doctor Service at this month’s annual RFDS Auction and Golf Day. In 13 years, the event has raised more than half a million dollars for the service. The day was packed with a range of new milestones, attracting more than 2000 people for auction activities and a field of more than 130 golfers for the morning golf. “In 13 years, this is by far the biggest auction day – last year we raised $70,000,” coordinator Val Lamb said. A record auction bid of $4000 was accepted for ‘The Million Star Restaurant’ package, while other top items included $1800 for a Coopers bar and $1750 for ‘Old Smokie’ the steam engine weber. Mrs Lamb said this year’s trends showed an influx of tourists for the event. “We believe the auction has become a highlight of the Roxby Downs calendar,” she said. “But from our raffle ticket sales and bidders’ lists we found a lot of out-of-towners, and there just seemed to be a

DRIVING FORCE…Ken and Val Lamb have been the driving force behind the annual Roxby Downs RFDS Auction and Golf Day for 13 years this year, culminating in this month’s record fundraiser amount of $100,000. lot of new faces in the crowd. “We think the focus on family and keeping the children happy makes this such a fun day, and really brings out a big cross-section of the community. The success of this year’s event has cemented the auction and golf day as SA’s biggest outback fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. “The auction and golf

day has become such a success that people are coming from all over the state to lend their support and enjoy in what is a really fun day,” RFDS spokesman John Tobin said. “I’d like to pay special tribute to Ken and Val Lamb of Olympic Dam Transport and also the Roxby Downs RFDS Auxiliary for their tireless work in making this event a success.”

Ken and Val Lamb have been the driving force behind the RFDS Auction and Golf Day for thirteen years. “We don’t do it just for the RFDS - its the pleasure of seeing everyone enjoying the day that makes it worth while, and getting the community together for a fun family day out,” Mrs Lamb said. “But we couldn’t do it alone.

“We would like to thank our sponsors, those who attended, the auctioneers Jason Codling and Kym Elson and especially our team of loyal helpers whose efforts in the month leading up to the auction made it such a great day.” Outstanding pledge payments can be made to Shirley Gow at the Witches Kitchen, or at Olympic Dam Transport, Olympic Dam.

Continuing community commitment to RFDS ROXBY DOWNS…The Roxby Downs community has raised almost $900,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service since the inception of the local RFDS Auxiliary in 1991. “This is a unique level of support from any one community in SA,” RFDS spokesman John Tobin said. “It’s an amazing result and a testament to the hard work of the people in the community who volunteer many hours to support the RFDS “We’re delighted with this level of support, especially when you consider that Roxby is a community of just a little more than 4000 people,” he said. Local auxiliary president Shirley Gow has joined Mr Tobin in thanking the Roxby Downs and regional community for its ‘outstanding’ level of support. “The night before the RFDS Auction, we were able to present a cheque for $95,000 to John Tobin and the RFDS,” she said. “That represents all the funds raised locally in 2002. “With all the initiatives this year, and the success of the auction, Boogie in the Bush and the Irish Christmas, who knows how much we’ll raise this year.” Coordinators of the Olympic Dam ‘Safe Days’ project - where WMC and local contractors are donating cash to the RFDS for every incident-free day during the current Smelter shutdown – expect to raise as much as $40,000 from the initiative. Teamed with the record Auction/Golf Day results, local auxiliary members hope this year’s efforts will help reach the local community reach the million dollar milestone. “But it’s the community that makes it all possible,” Mrs Gow said. “It’s those same people who keep handing over the money, volunteering their time and all in the recognition that the RFDS is our lifeline. “We have a core of 12 people in the auxiliary, but the support from local people just makes it so easy.” The RFDS made 116 landings at the Olympic Dam airport in 2002. Around 80 per cent of those visits represented patient transfers to Adelaide for a high or urgent level of medical care.
