BHPB PERKS CAUSE STIR B

HP Billiton employees could lose their $2,500 Services Allowance, if the Environment Forum gets its way. The Forum has lobbied the company to review the allowance to have it reflect environmental awareness by its employees. According to BHP Billiton, the allowance, which reimburses employees for their water, gas and electricity use, is provided to compensate for the additional cost of living in Roxby Downs. However, the Environment Forum said it drives the wrong behaviour in residents. “The Ser vices Allowance does not encourage people to implement energy and water efficient practices,” Environment Forum Chairperson Chris Schultz said. “The Environment Forum would support BHP Billiton in the implementation of a comparable allowance to compensate people for living in a remote area,” he said. The Forum proposed “replacing part of the Services Allowance with more environmentally friendly bonuses”. It was suggested that water rebates could be replaced by telephone rebates and that the lowest consumers in each housing category be rewarded with subsidised aircraft flights. Energy efficient globes or roof insulation subsidies were also recommended. BHP Billiton informed the Environment Forum that the proposed measures were not eligible for the 50 per cent concessional tax treatment now being utilised by the company, but that reimbursement for holidays would attract the same concessional tax treatment. The Environment Forum pounced on this alternative. Continued on Page 4
