Puff Pastry Heirloom Tomato Tart

cooking with friends

An Original Recipe by @raizyscookin

Ingredients: 1 sheet puff pastry (half of a 17-ounce package, thawed) All-purpose flour, for dusting 8 oz. whipped cream cheese, at room temperature 1/3 cup sour cream ½ teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice ¼ teaspoon sugar Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1-2 tablespoon fresh scallions, for topping 12 ounces assorted heirloom tomatoes, halved

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400. Unfold the puff pastry onto a floured piece of parchment paper and roll out into a 9 x 11inch rectangle. Score 1/2 inch from the edge all the way around, using a paring knife. Slide the pastry (on the parchment) onto a baking sheet. Poke the middle all over with a fork, then bake until golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool completely. Meanwhile, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, lemon zest, lemon juice, sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste in a large bowl and beat with a mixer on medium speed until smooth; stir in the chives. Spread evenly over the cooled crust. Arrange the tomatoes on top; season with salt & pepper and top with scallions.

Having read your informative article regarding the Catskills, I wondered if the author is aware that city folk used to come to the Monsey area, as well, in the summertime? (Alternating with places such as Far Rockaway, of course.) That was my father’s experience in the 1920s. He used to relate that what today is the Wiener Drive area, used to be Wiener Farm. They used to call Wiener Farm “Hotel Koch-Alein,” because the women shared a communal kitchen, each one cooking food for her own family. He said they used to travel by horse and buggy down Route 306, then left onto Maple Avenue to do their shopping in Spring Valley. So much for nostalgia! Miriam G.

THE GOAL OF CAMP Sandy Eller's article on the camps of yesteryear took me back some 20 years. My camp experience was just so different than that of my daughters, fun, easygoing and relaxing. We had our fair share of activities and trips, but that was a specialty, not a daily pressure. I wish the camps of today would stop the rat race of who can do crazier activities, more savvy trips and have higher-strung action (twice a day, never mind). I think life hands children enough pressure and competition; we don't have to feed excessive amounts of it deliberately. The summer is a great opportunity for kids to be taught the necessary skill of relaxation, to stop and enjoy that fresh country air along with tons of healthy activities and non-pressuring fun. Relaxation is

THE RACKET UPSTAIRS Dear Upstairs Neighbor, You are such nice people; you surely don’t realize how much some things disturb us. On a wooden porch, especially when it is unwisely placed over bedrooms, every step is amplified tenfold. Of course, you are not expected to refrain from using your porch! However, perhaps you can be considerate and not jump on pogo sticks, trampolines, ride on bikes, bounce balls, etc. You cannot imagine how much these noises bother us! In lots of neighborhoods, it is enforced that kids not be allowed outside Shabbos afternoon until 5:00 (that includes roughhousing on porches…). This practice is beneficial for adults and kids. Some mothers use the time to make their kids rest (read in bed for ½ hour, or sleep) while some others just tell their kids to play quietly. Perhaps I could still wish to be able to rest on Shabbos afternoon for more than five minutes before a ball on my window or a pogo stick on the top porch rudely awakens me? One could hope… I would love to use this great opportunity to solicit the opinion of my dear fellow Monsey residents. All of us are sadly aware of the unfortunate fact that our wonderful town’s insulation is almost nonexistent. This unrepairable problem behooves us to consider: • Is it right to zoom around on bikes in an apartment that has a downstairs tenant or neighbor? • How about bouncing balls over bedrooms? • Is jumping on pogo sticks indoors a right thing to do? • Should upstairs neighbors be particularly careful over bedrooms? I would really love to hear your opinions! Thank you for fantastic kosher reading material. Each of your wonderful writers are a true winner! The graphics are stunning and the recipes are great. Keep up your great work! C.B. EDITOR’S BULLETIN The hours for Ruach Hachaim Park were inadvertently omitted in last week’s Excursions. As told to: Basya Lev

IT WAS ON A RAINY EREV Shabbos when my grandmother called me, telling me that rainwater is good for one to drink during Iyar, to have a refuah, because it is an acronym for Ani Hashem Rofecha. She told me to take a bowl or cup and go out on the porch to collect some rainwater that was pouring down outside. I went to my front porch, but realized the awning was down, so I then went to the back porch. As I opened the door, there were two boxes from a grocery store, sopping wet. I checked the label and saw it belonged to my aunt who lives on the other side of my building. I called her and she thanked me profusely. She had been waiting and waiting for those boxes. Had my Bubby not called me, my aunt might not have received her boxes until after Shabbos!

Becoming Weigh Smarter How Stressed Are You? WHEN I HEAR THE WORD “STRESS,” I get stressed out. Well, not exactly. What I’m trying to say is when I hear about all the health conditions that are linked to stress, I feel a bit anxious. What exactly are we supposed to do to minimize stress? With demanding jobs, family obligations and household tasks — not to mention parenting — life can be pretty stressful. And for those who are going through a specific trauma, their stress levels may spike in a very short period of time. The last thing I want to create here is more stress, and that’s why I’m not going to list all the scientific research and medical studies on stress-related health conditions. In fact, I’m not going to mention any at all. I don’t think it’s helpful, and since I’m quite sure that most of you understand the concept of stress, I don’t see the point in adding fuel to the fire, so to speak. There’s simply no point in being fearful of every ailment in the dictionary that might affect you because you are stressed. Let’s say we can prove that a certain number of diseases are related to stress — how is that going to help you? More likely than not, it will make you even more anxious. That said, you don’t want to live in ignorance — but there’s simply no need to get stressed out quickly on a daily basis, feel burnt-out, and experience feelings of exhaustion and overwhelmedness each day. That’s no way to lead a quality life, and I firmly believe you deserve to at least know that you have a chance to take a step back and relax.

Healthy Habits Recently, one of my friends told me about a sickness where people get so extreme with their health that they literally become anorexic! They take it to the point where they are afraid to put any food into their bodies in fear of not being healthy enough. I responded that I didn’t see the difference between that and locking yourself inside the house in fear of inhaling polluted air! Healthy living doesn’t mean “insanity.” If these people get so stressed out by going overboard in their effort to be healthy, and become anorexic in the process — which can be life-threatening — then they

The choices you make may vary, but it’s important that you don’t go to a place where insanity kicks in.

ought to consider going back to the way they lived before. The point I’m making is that everything in life needs to be balanced. You are in the driver’s seat, and every minute you must make decisions regarding your health. The choices you make may vary, but it’s important that you don’t go to a place where insanity kicks in. Now, many people do not experience stress from improving their eating, sleeping and exercise habits; in fact, quite a few people have told me “they’ve never felt so good” after making healthy lifestyle changes. But you’ve got to understand your own needs. What I mean is that you may become overwhelmed by reading health-related articles, for example. Some people feel they will never be good enough, and take their diet and exercise habits to the extreme, while others read these articles for fun and decide what makes sense to integrate in their lives without overdoing it. Ultimately, if you read something and you’re not ready to implement it in your life, take a deep breath, relax and don’t stress over it!

Emotional Well-Being If you’ve read up until this point, you probably realized that I haven’t mentioned any supplements to take, juices to drink, diets to go on or gyms to sign up for. I think people are already aware of their options in these areas and understand the consequences of living on mostly junk food, not working out and neglecting to take care of any nutritional deficiencies. These are very basic things that people will change when they are ready to do so. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I will

In short, the dividends you will reap if you work on your emotional well-being are so valuable that if you’re not already focusing on your health, it’s no sur-

Parshas

S h e la c h

By Malka Schneps

IN THIS WEEK’S PARSHA, Moshe Rabbeinu dispatches the meraglim to spy out Eretz Yisrael. Before sending them out, Moshe gives the meraglim a list of instructions regarding what information they should ascertain regarding the blessings inherent in the land, and regarding the strength of the people against whom they would be waging war. One such instruction reads as follows: “Umah ha’aretz…hayesh bah eitz…? – What is the soil like? Is it fat or lean? Are there trees in it or not?” (Bamidbar 13:20) Rashi explains that by asking the meraglim to find out if there were any trees in the land, Moshe was really asking them to see if there were any tzaddikim in the land in whose merit the inhabitants might be protected. There are many instances in the Torah where we see the tremendous impact of tzaddikim on those who live in their midst. In Parshas Vayeira, Avraham Avinu davens for the salvation of S’dom, and we learn from this story that ten tzaddikim are enough to save an entire city of r’shayim. Another example is in Parshas Vayeitzei, which begins, “Vayeitzei Yaakov miBe’er Sheva vayeilech Charanah – And Yaakov left Be’er Sheva, and went to

78 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Charan.” (Bereishis 28:10) Rashi comments on this posuk that the departure of a tzaddik from a place has a tremendous impact: “While the tzaddik is in the city, he is its beauty, he is its splendor and he is its majesty. When he departs from there, its beauty has departed, its splendor has

Living in the light of a tzaddik, it is far easier to maintain one’s righteousness.

departed and its majesty has departed.” (Rashi, Bereishis 28:10) Likewise, Rashi makes a similar declaration on the impact of the departure of the tzadeikis Naomi from Moav: “The departure of a tzaddik from a place is impactful and makes an impression. Its splendor has turned away; its majesty has turned away; the praise of a city has

turned away…” (Rashi, Rus 1:7) The tremendous impact of a tzaddik on those around him is evident throughout this week’s Parsha. In addition to asking the meraglim to see if there are tzaddikim in Eretz Yisrael, we see firsthand several instances in the Parsha where the z’chus of a tzaddik lifts up or saves those around him. Yehoshua and Kalev were both saved from the evil scheme of the other meraglim in the z’chus of tzaddikim. Moshe changed Yehoshua’s name from Hoshea to Yehoshua, and Rashi cites the Gemara Sotah 34b that the name Yehoshua is a contraction of “Yoshiacha Hashem – May Hashem save you.” From this, Rashi concludes that Moshe davened for Yehoshua to be saved from the meraglim’s plans, and indeed he was. Kalev was also spared from the meraglim’s schemes in the merit of tzaddikim. It says, “Vaya’alu vanegev vayavo ad Chevron… – They went up, in the south, and he came to Hebron...” (Bamidbar 13:22) Rashi explains that the “he” who went to Chevron was Kalev: “Kalev went there to prostrate himself on the graves of the Avos that he not be tempted by his colleagues to be part of their counsel.” In the z’chus of the tzaddikim, Kalev was

spared as well. Indirectly, there is another instance in this week’s Parsha where it seems that a tzaddik made an impact on those around him. It says regarding the meraglim, “Kulam anashim, roshei v’nei Yisrael heimah – All of them were men of distinction; they were the heads of the B’nei Israel.” (Bamidbar 13:3) Rashi cites Midrash Tanchuma 4 that at that time the meraglim were still righteous. What changed? Perhaps it was their departure from the tzaddik Moshe Rabbeinu. Living in the light of a tzaddik, it is far easier to maintain one’s righteousness. Living in Monsey, we are extremely fortunate to live close to tzaddikim within a short drive. Take the opportunity to go and bask in their light. You can attend a Rebbe’s tisch and gaze upon his face if you are not able to obtain an appointment. In the bais hachaim of Vizhnitz, the Ribnitzer Rebbe, ztz”l, and the previous Skulener Rebbe, ztz”l, are always available, no appointments needed – and Chazal say that a tzaddik is greater in his death than in life. The Rambam teaches us that we fulfill the mitzvah of clinging to Hashem by clinging to tzaddikim. (Sefer HaMitzvos, Mitzvas Asei #6) May we always cling to our tzaddikim, and in so doing, cling to Hashem.

Hilchos Shabbos

Q&A

One Halachah at a Time By Rebbetzin Y. Weissmandl

HILCHOS OHEL

It is assur min Hatorah to make an ohel keva (permanent roof) on Shabbos or yom tov. What is an ohel? An ohel is a roof measuring a tefach by a tefach (approximately 4” by 4”). • It is considered an ohel keva even if there are no walls. • It is assur m’derabonon to make an ohel aray (temporary roof), unless it is smaller than a tefach. • Even if there are no walls it is considered an ohel keva. • The chachomim were mattir to add on to an ohel aray on Shabbos. For example, if a canopy or sliding roof were already closed more than one tefach before Shabbos, it is muttar to close it completely on Shabbos. Or, if one has an umbrella on the porch that was opened more than a tefach before Shabbos, one may open it fully on Shabbos. A regular umbrella is, however, muktza on Shabbos. • Canopies and hoods on carriages that were closed more than a tefach before Shabbos may be completely closed on Shabbos. • The halacha of ohel does not apply to something that is connected to another object, because it is then considered a door and may be closed on Shabbos. Therefore hoods that are connected to, and are a part of the carriage may be closed, even if they were not slightly closed before Shabbos. If one connects the hood on Shabbos it is assur to open it, even if it was open a tefach before Shabbos. • It is muttar to cover a pot with the lid of that pot because it is obvious that the lid is specific for that particular pot. However, if the pot is larger than a tefach and the pot is not full (there is a space of more than a tefach between the food and the cover, one may only cover the pot with the pot’s lid, but not with a plate. • One may cover food for decorative purposes, because it is obvious that one is not covering the food for the purposes of making an ohel. • When one wants to cover a crib or a carriage with a net, if the net has more fabric then holes, it falls under the issur of ohel.

East Ramapo School Budget Coming Up for Second Vote JUST OVER A MONTH after voters in the East Ramapo Central School District voted down a proposed budget, residents will head to the polls once again, this time to vote on a revised plan that would expand educational programming for public school students without restoring 14 days of extra busing for private school students. Voters rejected the $236-million budget approved by the school board in the May 16th election by an overwhelming majority. Had it been approved, that budget would have included a 2.49 percent tax increase that would have exceeded the state mandated tax cap. According to reports in The Journal News, many private school parents who would have benefited from the additional days of busing still cast their ballots against the new budget, because it would have resulted in a sharp tax hike. The new $151-million budget will include multiple benefits for the public school community, including fullday universal kindergarten, summer camp programs and increased instruction in arts, special education and bilingual services.

Restoring the 14 days of busing to private schools, which were cut in 2011, would have cost $1.4 million, with $1 million of that amount reimbursed by the state. Charles Szuberla, a state-appointed monitor to the district, said that reinstating busing on those days is something that needs to be discussed in the future, but was not the district’s highest priority. In a letter written to the East Ramapo Central School District, Superintendent Deborah Wortham noted that difficult decisions have been made to try to come up with an equitable budget. “Clearly, both the public and non-public school communities care deeply about and want what is best for their children,” said Wortham. “Whether an individual’s personal interest takes the form of art and music classes, services for students with disabilities and English Language learners, safe transportation, more election polling place or something else, everyone’s child matters and everyone’s interests matter.” The updated budget will be up for vote on a special election scheduled for June 20th.

Tappan Zee Construction Ahead of Schedule, With Late Summer/Early Fall Opening Expected for Rockland-Bound Traffic WHILE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS are continuing their work on the new Tappan Zee Bridge, the first of the twin spans is now officially drivable, reported the New York Times. The three-mile-long westbound span is four lanes wide and features separate bicycle and pedestrian paths. A trio of ramps connecting the two eastbound and westbound bridges will allow traffic to be diverted from one span to the other in case of accidents. Workers are continuing their preparations for the bridge’s fall or pre-fall opening and still have to lay a 1½-inch asphalt coating on the bridge’s deck. Also in the plans for the new span are LED lights, digital message signs and metal

fencing. The price tag for the two bridges is estimated at close to $4 billion. Later this year, commuters in both directions will have to share the 96-foot-wide westbound bridge while workers begin dismantling the old Tappan Zee Bridge. Once the original structure has been demolished, workers can complete the slightly narrower eastbound bridge, which is slated for completion by the end of 2018. Officials say that they expect the new twin bridges to carry 137,000 cars daily over the Hudson River across its eight lanes. The Tappan Zee Bridge project is the first major crossing to be completed in the state since the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964.

Yosef Yitzchok gave her his full attention. “—invite her. We have to bring her here, if her husband won’t.” He shook his head, pendulum. No. “This place is so… healing.” She said it. Admitted herself into his dream. But it was true. “There’s no way. We can’t,” he said. “I can’t. I’m sorry.” “Then I can’t live here.” Sometimes, in making a point, we sacrifice the person making the point, we sacrifice ourselves. He didn’t respond. choosing her over me.” He said it gently. He wasn’t accusing, and yet the accusation stung across her face like a slap. She bit her lip, but it didn’t help, not even when it puffed up and made it hard to talk. “You are destroying your own life for hers, and she doesn’t even value her own life.” At this, Henya was silent, not knowing how to respond but knowing fiercely it wasn’t true. Not true at all. She got up from her green and white woven porch chair and paced. Life values itself. Bianca valued life. It was perhaps because of that, to preserve herself, that she shut down and out, like a wounded lioness would. Everyone values their own life. Even when it doesn’t seem so. A soul always knows why it came all the way down here into this world of darkness, cruelty and fright. “I will always value her.” He knew. “But she’s a sick woman!” “This is what Hashem made her to be.” “True. And He will care for her. Not we.” A cold whipped her from the north and she shivered. “She’s my friend.” “We cannot have her,” Yosef Yitzchok said. “She’s sick. Very sick. Even when she’s not sick she’s crazy. She is so crazy she doesn’t even show it. She just twists your heart around.” His wife couldn’t see it. She was just blind to this. He was afraid that if she allowed a sick person into her psyche, it would destroy her. It wasn’t like Henya hadn’t also been through the war. She had. And she was just as susceptible. She would let Bianca in, and in short time Henya would be worn down, worse than Bianca. Even her just considering taking an adult friend into her own house was shocking. How could she not see it? How could he save her? He could be adamant. He did have a say in this, so he could state his will and leave it at that. “She is too sick,” he said. “If she is well enough to move into her own house near us, fine. Otherwise, you’ll have to leave her in the care of detached carers.” But Henya couldn’t. She had sacrificed enough. She huddled into herself. “We are all sick women, sick people, sagging on the inside with but a membrane keeping it all together. And why is one better than the other, if not through one’s capacity to embrace and accept the brokenness of us

march all? “If I had that, if I could once look into my soul and just accept all the blackness, the mangled tarnish on a neshamah that was once white, not charred and maimed,” she said hotly. The images swam up as they always did, always to the surface of her consciousness. The bodies. The ones she’d shove, with bare fists. Here. Bend. Here. Pile. Dejewel. Stack. Another. Another. Always so many bodies. Oh. Too horrible, too grotesque, that was what her soul had become. She closed her eyes on herself, on the images, but they had stolen into her eyes, and danced before her closed eyelids, daring her and making death noises. She crunched her eyes tighter. Go away. Go away. “Elokai,” she whispered reaching, groping in the dark beyond the visions that haunted her, there under the cricket song. “The neshamah you gave me, she is pure. She is pure, she remains pure. Because, Atah barasah. You have created her. You, not I. Not my actions, you. You. You’ve made this horror, the war, those monsters, yemach shemam. And you’ve put me in a position where I assisted them. But Bianca is pure. She is pure. She is pure. “She is pure, Yosef Yitzchok. Bianca is pure.” “But… she drives you crazy.” “No more crazy than my own mind can. Nothing is more powerful than the ghost party going on in my own mind. Farkert. I find solace in her. When I no longer have a mind as toxically potent as her words” — oh, but it was hard to conceive of such a rebirth — “then maybe I won’t resonate with her. But now, she is my friend for a reason. Because she is me, only bolder, more honest. “It’s a neshamah friendship. Our paths down this lonely road… they

It had survived the journey, still looked hubush and full in the tight weave of her sister’s braid, a defiance of silly and pretty in the grim and hopeless. “To the left.” But her sister was so pretty. Henya watched that bow receding farther away from her. “To the right.” Henya stepped deftly to the right. Had the bow, too, been removed from the dead? Thursdays @ Six

Recipes and Food Styling by Leah Stern Photo Credit: C. Tarkielltaub

Whichever way we slice it, Thursdays tend to be busy. Between handling the three C’s: cooking, cleaning and child-raising, turning out a decent supper can be a challenge. This supper is unique in that although it’s not Shabbos food at all, it gets prepared along with it, entailing minimal extra work and no excess dishes. This is one menu custommade for all those super shviggers who host their young couples on this hectic day.

CUBED VEGETABLE-CHICKEN SOUP I always feel bad to discard the cooked vegetables from my chicken soup. This recipe once sent to me by a dear cousin after the birth of a baby, solves that problem! Besides for being delicious, I love that it makes use of all the flavorful root vegetables.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare chicken soup using your tried-andtrue method (over the years I have learned that almost everyone has their own tips and techniques for the most basic broth), but instead of adding all vegetables whole, dice: 1 squash 3–4 carrots 1 sweet potato ½ knob celery Some checked celery sticks Parsley root

2. Place in a wrap-and-boil bag. 3. Once soup is done, transfer a little less than the amount you’ll be using for supper into a container and pour the vegetables from the bag into the container. Delicious when served with French fried onions.

TURKEY-POTATO STEW

Yields 6 portions and a 6-quart cholent

This goulash is a non-compromised dish of its own and gets prepared straight in the cholent pot. Have the beans prepared and ready to be cooked, and this stew will double as a most flavorful, full-bodied cholent. Add the beans to the pot right after you serve supper and proceed to cook the cholent or place in your fridge to cook on Friday. Feel free to substitute chicken or beef for the turkey.

INGREDIENTS: 2–3 Spanish onions, chopped 5 garlic cloves, chopped ⅓ cup oil 3 lbs. turkey stew (either dark or dark/ white combo) 8 loose potatoes 1 tsp. paprika ½ tsp. pepper 2 tsp. kosher salt

DIRECTIONS: 1. Saute onion and garlic in oil until translucent. 2. Add turkey pieces and cook for 1 hour. 3. Cube potatoes and add to pot along with spices. Continue cooking for 1½ hours, or until done. 4. Serve supper; sorry, no doubles tonight! SEASONED CHEF: Prepare above recipe in oven (the results will be slightly different) and then transfer the stew to the Crockpot and proceed with cholent cooking.

VEGETABLE KUGEL As children, we were treated to kugel that was made fresh, exclusively on Friday. I find that I have so much to do on Erev Shabbos, that I do bake the kugel on Thursday. The problem: By the time I want to put it in the fridge, most of it has disappeared. This vegetable version — with less carbs and more nutrition — has since become a Thursday favorite. (Although I must admit some people still manage to sneak a bit of potato kugel as well.) Have all the vegetables prepared and peeled, and you can make it right after the potato kugel. No need to as much as rinse the food processor. INGREDIENTS: 3 loose potatoes 1 sweet potato 1 squash ½ medium butternut squash 1 small onion 2 large carrots 6 eggs ¾ cup oil 1 T. kosher salt ¼ tsp. pepper

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375°. 2. Using the fine shredder, shred all vegetables. 3. Combine with the rest of ingredients and place in a 9x13 pan. 4. Bake with your kugel for two hours. SEASONED CHEF: Vegetables are watery, therefore you need to bake at least 2 hours. You can cut baking time by adding oat bran or bread crumbs to the mixture which will absorb the liquid.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 107

Suri had been working as a teacher for close to twenty years. Her mornings were busy, spent taking care of her household needs. The afternoons consisted of teaching, while her evenings were spent marking papers, talking to parents and preparing worksheets and lessons. She always tried to make the class work easier and more exciting for her students. Suri knew she needed to cut back, but then her school introduced a new reading program for her grade level. Unlike most programs that came with a teacher’s guide, textbooks and workbooks, this “program” consisted of storybooks that were given to Suri to do with as she wanted. There was no guide, only the attitude that she would know what to do. Suri felt like she was fitting a square peg into a round hole, overwhelmed with creating a new curriculum in addition to her regular duties. By the end of the year, Suri quit her job. For four months afterward, every time she thought about going back to teaching, her body cringed and yelled out, “NOOOOOOOO!” One day Suri saw a book entitled “Overcoming Burnout.” That’s when she realized she had suffered from worker’s burnout.

What is worker’s burnout? Worker’s burnout was coined by Herbert Freudenthal, a psychologist. It is a unique type of work stress that causes a physical, emotional or mental exhaustion which is combined with doubts about one’s competence and/or the value of one’s work. What causes burnout? The Mayo Clinic put together the following list of factors which may factor into burnout.

UNCLEAR JOB EXPECTATIONS: You are uncertain what is expected of you or how much authority you have.

LACK OF CONTROL: The amount of your workload, lack of resources needed to do your job properly, or inability to control your schedule

WORK/LIFE IMBALANCE: Your work doesn’t leave any time for family, friends or recreational activities.

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW

MISMATCH IN VALUES: Your values differ from your employer’s.

UNFAIR PAY OR RECOGNITION: You feel you should be getting paid more, or should have received a higher raise, or a promotion. There is no verbal praise for the work you do.

EXTREMES OF ACTIVITY: Your job is either too chaotic or too boring/monotonous.

POOR JOB FIT: The job does not fit your experience, level of skills or interest.

LACK OF SOCIALIZATION: You feel isolated and have little to do with your workmates.

DYSFUNCTIONAL WORKPLACE DYNAMICS: You feel micromanaged, bullied or undermined by your boss, supervisor or co-workers.

How do you know if you might be experiencing burnout? Although burnout tends to sneak up on a person, there are certain signs that could help you determine if you are experiencing burnout. • Negative, cynical or critical attitude toward your job, co-workers, and clients • A feeling that you are not doing enough or doing too much • Feel disillusioned, stagnated and/or not having any job satisfaction • Lack of energy or constantly feeling fatigued • Sleep habits and appetite have changed for the worse • Psychosomatic complaints, such as headaches, backaches or other physical complaints • Lack of interest in social activities • Inability to concentrate • Unwillingness to go to work or not being productive at work • Constantly putting the needs of others before your own • Obsessively thinking about work regardless of where you are Who’s at risk for job burnout? Job burnout has become increasingly widespread as people are now working longer hours and taking on more responsibility. Finding per-

sonal fulfillment through one’s job has become more of a challenge. Although everyone is at risk for job burnout, it is more likely to happen to someone who has trouble setting limits and tries to be everything to everyone. Those who identify strongly with their jobs will often lack the personal balance needed between their work and personal life. It is often those who have a lot of energy and a positive attitude and show the most promise at the beginning of their careers who end up getting burnout. This could be because people who are dedicated to their work will usually get more work thrown their way until they have trouble completing their tasks. Interestingly enough, those in a helping profession, such as counseling, teaching or health care are at a higher risk of developing burnout. What are the consequences of burnout? Burnout that is not addressed can lead to severe physical, emotional and/or mental problems. It can affect how you do your job, which could result in the loss of it. If you think you are experiencing burnout, it is best to take action to resolve the issues causing it. How can I overcome or prevent job burnout? First, identify the issues that are causing you

THE MONSEY VIEW / 109

to feel burnt out. Admitting that you are under stress or have issues that need to be resolved is the first step in treating the problem. Also, make sure you are socializing with people, since positive social interactions help to reduce stress. The easiest resolved case of burnout is usually when a person has been working too hard or for too many hours by choice. Simply cutting down on your hours, delegating work, leaving all work-related issues at work and making time for recreational activities will usually help solve the problem. When burnout is caused by an outside factor, such as unclear job expectations, a lack of recognition or being underpaid, it might be helpful to sit down with your employer and have a discussion about the issue. Often people quit without explaining their real reason and lose out on the opportunity that the employer might make the changes in order to keep the employee. In cases where stress and frustration is due to the job being boring, it might pay to take a training which may give you ideas on how to make your job more interesting. Sometimes a change in attitude — even though the position is the same — could make a big difference. Another important issue is to eat right, exercise and make sure to sleep seven to eight hours a night. This often has a positive effect on a person’s well-being. As a result, issues might seem more manageable.

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Although not all burnout can be eliminated, much can be avoided. Therefore, if you know there is no way to change the cause of the burnout or if the position is no longer a good fit for you, then it might be time to look for another position or consider starting your own business. The main thing to remember is that the earlier you are able to recognize that you are starting to burn out, the easier it will be to remedy the situation. Are there any benefits to burnout? As funny as the question may seem, the answer is yes, if caught in time, before any physical or mental damage is done. Often burnout causes a person to reevaluate his situation and ask himself questions that could change his life into a more meaningful existence. Some of the questions to ask would be: • Am I overworking? If so, why? • What are my key interests and skills? • What are my core values? Does work balance it? • What is work accomplishing or preventing me from accomplishing? Through it all, the key factor to remember is that everything is from Hashem and there is a purpose to what is happening to you whether you realize the reason or not.

There’s nothing quite like waking up in the morning knowing that you’ll be spending the day doing something you love. (I know all about that!) Working at an enjoyable job that you excel in adds an extra bounce to your step and significant joy to life. Triple that when you have a great boss, great workmates and a great salary. But how do you land that job you dream of? Whether your ideal position involves personal meetings with high-profile clients, working with children or cooking up delicious food inside the steaming kitchen of a fastpaced restaurant, securing your desired job always starts at the same point. It all begins with the resume.

Why a Resume Matters Too often it happens that highly qualified and talented people never even manage to get an interview after sending in their resumes. They might chalk it up to an overloaded pool of applicants or bad mazel and even begin to doubt their ability and self-worth. But the truth is that many times these applicants would be hired on the spot if only they’d make it past the initial entrance exam: the reading of the resume. This document is the golden key capable of opening sealed doors. In short, it is the summation of every valuable quality you have to offer an employer. Few people, however, take the time to draft a solid resume, not realizing that it could be mean the difference between the coveted face-to-face interview or spending another day staring at the classified ads. Creating a resume is a combination of art and science,

118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 14, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

with beauty, simplicity and knowhow forming the foundation of the entire document. In fact, resume writing is a field of its own, with knowledgeable resume writers sometimes charging upwards of $1,200. Of course, with the proper investment of time and care, it is possible to create your own winning resume. Before you run for pen and paper, though, let’s discuss what makes resume writers even think of asking such “outrageous” sums. Perhaps, after learning what it takes to draft the perfect document, you won’t find those prices so outlandish…

The Keyword System Most resumes are scanned in under 20 seconds. And that’s if they’ve earned the

privilege of even being seen. In our generation, most large companies and even many small businesses have now turned to computerized systems for finding potential employees. These systems utilize a database based on certain keywords that the employer is expecting to see from applicants. After all the resumes are in, a button is pushed and walla! The resumes with the greatest density in keywords come to the top of the list, and the rest? Well, they just fade away into oblivion... Let’s say that Sara Russell (a fictitious person) sent in her resume for a teaching position at a large, wellestablished, up-to-date school that sees many applicants every year. To make the hiring job easier by zooming in on the best candidates, the school invested in one of these keyword programs. Over five hundred applications were received, loaded into the system and examined by the computer program.

Sara Russell handed in her resume at the same time as her classmate, Toby Clig — whose mother just happens to be a resume writer. Though both graduates are equally qualified, with similar experiences, Toby’s mother helped her to include keywords that are currently buzzing in the teaching industry. While Sara’s resume focused on her patience, creativity and ability to relate to people, Toby’s resume contained power words like “curriculum planning,” “teacher-parent relations” and “classroom management.” Only one resume included specific-to-the-field keywords. I give you one guess as to which girl got the job. (Yes, it was Toby.) With thousands of industries and many industry-specific keywords buzzing about, resume writing has become a field mastered with time and experience. In addition to the knowledge base involved with resume writing, there

It’s important to keep your resume as simple as possible but pleasant to the eye. You want it to stand out in a sophisticated manner, leaving the reader with the feeling that you are a well-balanced individual that put thought into crafting your resume. Here are some tips to do that: • Avoid using many colors, borders and multiple fonts, as this will make the document look messy and wild. • Fonts that are thick and bold, text written in all capital letters or fonts larger than 12 points may be used in headlines, but will appear too demanding, loud and abrasive if placed in the body of the text. • Don’t make your reader squint. Aim for a 10–12 point size for text body. • Script fonts that are not easy to read should never be used. • Fonts like Comic Sans are usually a big no-no, as they lend a childish tone to a serious document, leaving the reader with the underlying feeling that you lack professionalism. • Try to avoid fonts that are overused to give your document a little edge. Times New Roman and Arial, for instance, are stereotypical of resumes and will make your resume blend in just a tad too much. For a professional font that stands out, try fonts like Georgia, Calibri or my personal favorite: Cambria. You’ll also want to give the eye a break by maintaining adequate spacing between sections of the resume and by listing qualifications with bullets, rather than as an ongoing sentence with a lot of commas.

What to Include in a Resume Aside from keywords, acceptable fonts and an appropriate use of color, what else should you include on — or exclude from — your resume? For starters, you’ll need to have your contact information at the top of the page. This will include your name, address, home phone number, cell phone number, and email address, if applicable. According to outdated resume advice, the next step is to include an objective, listing what kind of position you are interested in. Good resumes don’t

Custom Crafting Every resume should be custom crafted for the business at hand. Obviously, this includes those keywords we already spoke about, but it also includes ways that you can help that particular business reach its goals. In addition to work history, vocational trainings and volunteer positions, go ahead and list different skills you have that can benefit the company you are applying to, and how you might help them solve various problems. A sure-fire way to earn points is to present statistics in how you’ve helped businesses/employers in the past, such as “raised revenue X percent,” or “decreased expenditures X percent,” etc. Hobbies are not routinely included on good resumes, unless of course, they enhance your hireability in some way. An origami hobby is probably worthless to mention on a CPA’s resume, but on an art school teacher’s resume it would be definitely worth the mention. Remember, you want your resume to be packed with powerful points and not useless trivia. In general, the rule when writing resumes (or anything really) is cut, cut, cut! If it’s not necessary just leave it out! Leave out references, unless the hiring party is specifically asking for it. You can always supply those later. One thing you should include, however, is a cover letter. This is your place to shine, to let your personality spill forth onto the page. This is the place where you can get the hiring team to connect with you. Don’t be afraid to write about how you can positively impact their company, why you want to work specifically for them, or even add a line of praise about yourself — said by someone else, of course. Cover letter intros and closings are important. Please, for your own sake, don’t use the dry and boring, “Dear Sir or Madam,” or “To Whom It May Concern,” that we all learned in fourth grade. You want to show that you’ve grown beyond that and are ready to work in the adult world. Do use titles like Rabbi, Mr., Mrs., Dr., etc., depending on what is appropriate for the situation. Finish the letter with warm words of gratitude for considering you for employment. If you are submitting your resume via email, it is wise to send a PDF version that you’ve saved, in order to prevent damaged files, converted fonts and accidental deletions. If you’ve tried your best to create a stellar resume, davened and worked on those marketable skills, you’ll have tremendously increased your chance at landing a choice job. Of course, there’s still the interview to tackle, but with a golden resume opening doors, that dream job just got a whole lot closer.

graduate

usually include an objective for two reasons: • Since resumes are scanned in under 20 seconds, objectives take away valuable attention. • Hiring companies are not interested in what you are looking to gain from them; they want to know what they can gain from you! Just the other day a neighborhood girl came to type up her resume on my computer, and I could barely contain myself from redoing the whole thing for her. I did, however, allow myself to explain the most recent bullet I’ve presented you with. “Imagine you walk into a store,” I told her, “and you are greeted by a saleswoman who comes over and says, ‘I want your money.’” The girl started giggling, imagining how funny that would sound. “We all know that saleswomen want our money, but they shouldn’t say it outright! First they have to offer us something to make it worth our while!” The same goes with resume writing. An objective simply states what you want from them. You want a job. You want them to provide you that job. By handing in a resume, they learned that fact already. Don’t dumb them — and you — down by pointing it out again. You don’t want to be like that annoying saleswoman; don’t demand a job. Sell yourself. So, how do you sell yourself?

CLAMMY HANDS, QUIVERING STOMACHS and tremorous speech while attempting to prove ourselves to a complete stranger can happen even to the best of us when it’s time for an interview. Yes, it is quite intimidating to be vetted for a new job. But with these great tips, you might be able to halve the anxiety associated with the interview that just might land you the job you love.

THE DAY OF ARRIVE ON TIME: This means within 5–10 minutes before your scheduled interview. LOWER YOUR CORTISOL LEVELS: Before you head into your interview, lower your stress hormones by engaging in “super poses.” Do this by standing with your feet apart and your hands on your hips, or sit in a chair and throw your shoulders back and lounge, arms at the side. Do these for two minutes and feel the calm that comes from less stress. BE PLEASANT: Offer staff members and the interviewer a pleasant greeting and a smile. (Nobody wants to hire a grouch!) BE THE BIGGER MAN: If you’ve suffered a job loss or left a previous position, never bad-mouth an employer. It will make you look pretty lousy, and even worse, you might be oiver on lashon hara. BODY LANGUAGE SPEAKS: Don’t fidget, squirm, look constantly around the office, touch your face or hair, mumble or sit with your arms crossed. Do make eye contact, nod appropriately, sit confidently and smile every so often. ASK INSIGHTFUL QUESTIONS: Obviously, you’ll have already done your research about the general aspects of the business, but take it a step further and show the boss you are really interested in learning more. Discuss more in-depth details about the position available and the company’s goals. But never ask about salary at the interview. NEVER! THINK THINGS THROUGH: Many times, the person conducting an interview will ask questions about how you’ve handled difficulties in the past. It’s okay to pause, think for a minute and then give the best answer you can come up with that showcases your ingenuity, patience or whatever midah they value. The interview is time to sell yourself. Don’t be a big shot, but don’t hide your goodness either.

126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 14, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

BEFORE THE BIG DAY DO YOUR RESEARCH: Get to know the company you desire to work for. Learn what they do, what their goals are and what the position you’re applying for generally entails. They’ll be thrilled that you’ve done your homework. (Don’t research too much, however, and tell the interviewer you know details of his private life… That’s just creepy.) DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Make sure the outfit you will wear to the interview is clean and fresh and reflects company standards and values. Get a haircut if needed, or wash and set your sheitel, brush your hat, polish your shoes, etc. PREPARE SEVERAL COPIES OF YOUR RESUME: You’ll want it handy and can’t risk damage to a single copy. (Handing over a wrinkled resume or one with coffee stains is a big no-no.) REST UP: Try to get a good night of sleep so that you’ll be on top of your game.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW GRATITUDE: Send a Thank You card expressing appreciation for the opportunity to be interviewed by their company.

And of course, both before and after (and maybe a little bit during) the interview, daven that if the job will be a bracha in your life, everything should go smoothly!

MOONLIGHTING is to have a second job in addition to one’s regular employment. A JACK OF ALL TRADES is a person who can do passable work at various tasks. The “master of none” element appears to have been added at a later time. A FLOATER is an employee who is reassigned from job to job as needed.

Odd jobs around the world In Mexico, people walk around with batteries to give people toques, shocks, for a fee. An oshiya, in Japan, gets paid to push people onto trains. A professional mourner, usually in Asia or Africa, actually is hired to cry at funerals. A cuidacarros, in Brazil, watches your car when you’re gone and beats up anyone who tries to steal it. Bike fishers are only needed in Amsterdam, where with all the bikes and all their canals, many of the bicycles end up needing to be fished out of the water.

The current unemployment rate, as of May 2017, fell to a low of 4.3% Natural rate of unemployment: 4%. For the economy to be healthy, there needs to be this level of unemployment, reflecting workers coming and going and looking for better jobs. If you take into account the underemployed and those discouraged workers who gave up looking for work as well, the current real unemployment rate is 8.6%, also historically low.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that on the last business day of April 2017, there were 6 million job openings in the U.S.

Highest historical unemployment rate: 1933: 25%, at the height of the Great Depression

Lowest unemployment rate: 1944: 1.2%, due to World War II and the Bretton Woods conference for postwar economic order.

What’s the best job ever? One that allows you to express your personality while doing something you love — and getting paid for it. (Otherwise, it’s a hobby.) The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, and has not increased since July 2009.

New York’s current minimum wage is $9.70 per hour.

Employees who do not have to get paid the full minimum wage: • Student-learners and full-time students working in retail, service, agriculture, or higher education • Employees with disabilities that impair their productive ability • An employee who receives tips • Workers under the age of 20 during the first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment • Babysitters on a casual basis

• • • • • • • •

T N O R F R E RIV PARKS OVER THE BRIDGE

Living so close to the Hudson River gives us the advantage of scenic spots very close to home. We’ve covered most of them ‘round our parts on this side of the river: Bear Mountains State Park, Haverstraw Bay County Park, Nyack Beach State Park, The Piermont Pier and Marsh, and we took you even farther south to the lookout points off the Palisades and Ross Dock Picnic Area near the GWB, leaving over just a few unexplored spots which we hope to get to at a later point. And then there’s the other side of the river. Over in Westchester County, past the Tappan Zee Bridge are countless scenic jewels and parks with river views. We’ll be covering three beautiful ones which are not too far out.

First to hit shelves, is a scrumptious Eclair Mike Cone. That’s right, the Mehadrin Mike Cone that has become your favorite guilty pleasure over the last year, is now available in an irresistible new flavor. The Eclair Cone joins the exciting Mike Cone family that already offers Vanilla and Vanilla Fudge Cone varieties. The Eclair Cone is a vanilla flavored ice cream cone with a chocolate center, topped with cookie crumbs. It is true ice cream heaven.

The Mike Cone is a unique twist on the classic cornetto. A perfect combination of creamy, smooth and tasty. It is the ideal ice cream for hot summer days spent running around the park, or frolicking in the ocean, as well as long Shabbos afternoons socializing with friends. There is no occasion unfitting for the Mike Cone. It takes just one lick and a tiny bite for you to grow hooked to the uniquely mouthwatering Mike Cone taste. Ice cream enthusiasts will be unable to resist taking their taste buds on this swirly, fudgy, vanilla-filled Mike Cone journey. Children will find every excuse to beg their parents for this ice cream delight. All Mike Cone flavors are available for purchase individually and in a 6-pack variety box containing all three yummy flavors. So, hop on down to your local kosher store and have a taste of the new Eclair Mike Cone. Just a quick warning; expect the unexpected!

Another note was found today hidden in Rav Gedalia’s sefer. No one is surprised any longer...

In Rav Gedalia’s home

We’re used to it already.

I keep finding these mysterious notes in my sefarim.

It’s become a real mystery.

Every time there’s a difficult question, we find an amazing answer the next day.

My talmidim have become used to finding brilliant answers to all their questions.

Chana, the daughter of the Rosh Yeshiva, would stand behind the curtain each day to watch the beis midrash, and enjoy the sweet sound of Torah learning.

I will figure out this extraordinary secret!

Real Estate Job History Is Key WHEN PURCHASING A HOME, job history is key. Mortgage guidelines are straightforward. One must have a twoyear continuous work history and be currently employed in order to use their income in the mortgage qualification. Schooling can be part of the two years. If someone changed jobs, changed careers in the last two years, or got promoted to a position that caused an increase of income, the mortgage lender may require a work history letter, pretty much a resume of one’s work experience. This letter can make or break the deal. Sometimes corroboration from the employer is needed in addition to the letter. I understand the emphasis placed on the past. The stability of the past is supposed to demonstrate a continued stability of the future, but who knows what will happen in the future? I will never forget a loan that we closed about five years ago. The occupying borrower’s cosigner lived in another state. We wanted to close on a Thursday, but we weren’t sure that a Power of Attorney would be acceptable since it was a government loan. We ended up closing Thursday night with a POA. I got a call on Sunday morning. The cosigner, who had been on the job over 25 years had a heart attack and was in the ICU. He, baruch Hashem, survived, but he retired and never went back to work. So while we scrutinize and analyze the previous job history, we can’t obviously see into the future. The only thing that the stability of previous employment shows a mortgage company is the borrower’s willingness to work, and the hope is that if the borrower were to lose their

The stability of the past is supposed to demonstrate a continued stability of the future, but who knows what will happen in the future?

job, they would look and find a new job because they were in the habit of working. That is why multiple job changes are a red flag to an underwriter, and one cannot get a government loan if they had more than three job changes in the past year. The same logic goes for second jobs. Mortgage guidelines for years were that if one has a second job, we would have to prove that they had the job continuously and concurrently with the primary job. Additionally, a second job’s income is averaged over the last two years while the income from the primary job is calculated based on current income. The reason for the two-year proof of concurrent jobs is because the mortgage lenders are concerned that if this guideline was not in place, one might get a second job just to qualify for the mortgage and then quit. The income is averaged, because usually a second job is not as stable as a primary job and hours of work can vary based on availability and schedule. The logic again is, that if the borrower were to lose that second job, they would replace it since they were accustomed to working those hours. It all goes back to the resume. The stronger the resume, the more likely to get a job interview, a shidduch redt and a mortgage loan!
