RE: EXTRA HOURS OFF (ISSUE #109) I am writing this letter in response to the query by C.K.B. regarding why day camps don’t have a full day on Erev Tisha B’Av. The reason is that if you look in Shulchan Oruch, you will see that on Erev Tisha B’av from chatzos (midday) our aveilus (mourning) begins in earnest, even though we are still permitted to drink and eat. We are not allowed to take walks for pleasure, or engage in any other pleasurable activity at that time. Learning Torah, other than the subjects permitted on Tisha B’Av, is subject of a machlokes. This is the halacha, not simply a hiddur. Obviously, to have day camp, whose entire purpose is to give children pleasure, is the antithesis of chinuch. Our goal is to be mechanech children to know the correct thing to do. To have a day camp on Erev Tisha B’Av would therefore be a colossal error in chinuch. Sincerely, Anonymous

My daughter, who runs a playgroup near my home, stepped in for a short break as I was reading your letter. No worries — her two capable assistants were in charge. I asked her this very question. Naturally, I always thought the exact same thing when my children were young, but who wants to be a “complaining” parent? Her reply was honest. The only reason she could think of for having a half day Erev Tisha B’av was so that she could be home for her kinderlach when they return after a half day of day camp/cheder. A valid reason may be that since no learning is done after chatzos, M&S SHOE REPAIR

Erev Tisha B’av, a parent (who may be a counselor/play group teacher), needs to be home for them. As you pointed out, what preparations are there Erev Tisha B’av which involve more work than the preparation of a regular supper? As to beginning an hour or more later the day after, there’s not much reasoning behind that either. That extra hour won’t make much of a difference for someone who didn’t fast well, and you can’t bathe or launder children’s clothing until after chatzos anyhow. Not much of a satisfactory explanation, but there it is. R.S.
I’m responding to C.K.B., who was wondering why day camps end early on Erev Tisha B’av. According to the book “Guidelines,” written by Rabbi Elozor Barclay and Rabbi Yitzchak Jaeger, it is forbidden to take pleasure walks on Erev Tisha B’av after midday. Presumably, other fun activities are a problem as well. Camps probably end early because day camp fun is not in the spirit of the day. Sincerely, Gittel Karniol
RE: WHERE THE FOOD ENDS UP (ISSUE #104) This letter is directed to the woman who gave her cleaning help blintzes in an aluminum foil pan, together with a whole mango. Just for your information, I found it in my trash can! I beg all Yiddishe mammes, don’t give your cleaning help food to “to take home” with them. More often than not, it ends up in someone’s trash can! Beware of baal tashchis. May we all find ourselves in Yerushalayim with Moshiach real soon! A Concerned Resident
CLIQUE AWARENESS When my family first moved to our new house about a year and a

half ago, the first ones to welcome and greet us was a family from a nearby street. Not only did the mother and children come with cookies and a welcome note in hand, but the wife made sure to make us feel welcomed by all of our other new neighbors as well. I later found out from other neighbors that she had placed phone calls to the other nearby families who have children similar in age to mine and suggested that they pay us a visit and set up a playdate. When we would frequent their backyard last summer, my daughter would sometimes feel intimidated by the groups of other kids who would congregate there, but the daughter of this family would go out of her way to make an effort to make my daughter feel included in our new neighborhood. It is now over a year since we’ve moved in and we are, baruch Hashem, settled in nicely and even have some new families with children who have recently moved onto our street. The past few weeks, however, I’ve noticed that this girl from the other street who first came to welcome us has been spending more and more time coming to play on our street with my daughter and our more immediate neighbors. When I asked if her neighbors have been away (I wondered why she was coming to our street each week when she has so many friends on her own street), she said no, that her neighbors have been home, but no one on her street wants to play with her anymore. Her eyes got teary as she spoke, so I didn’t press further. But apparently a new family moved in a few months ago, and since then, a clique has formed among their daughter and a bunch of the other girls, excluding this one. The mother told me that she was encouraging her daughter to try and break into the group again (after all, she had always played so nicely with the other girls and everyone always seemed to liked her), but after she witnessed firsthand the eye-rolling and whispering that occurred each time that her daugh-

ter would ask to join, she decided that it wasn’t right to continue subjecting her child to such rejection, and instead she would walk her to my street. My heart is breaking for this little girl. I have personally seen the beautiful middos that this girl possesses and her ability to make everyone feel included and to feel special. It is just so ironic that she is the victim of clique behavior. We just went through yet another Tisha b’Av. Please let us remember what led us to this golus and let us not forget to teach it to our kids as well. A Concerned Neighbor, Friend and Fellow Mother
ANOTHER SAFETY ASPECT This past week my husband was driving down the street, when a girl who was playing ball was running after her ball that rolled into the street. It scares me to think what could’ve happened. This is not a new problem. A child who is so engrossed in playing ball will automatically run after it. Please think twice before letting your kids take their ball outside near the street. A Concerned Monsey Resident
IS HE HURTING OUR KIDS? There is a person that has been coming frequently to the Jewish communities in New York, selling herbal creams for children with eczema. Many parents have bought these creams and been amazed at how miraculously their children have cleared while on the cream… However, when they try to stop using the creams, the children look like burn victims. One little boy stopped by my house the other day because his mother wanted me to look at his hands after using that cream; he was absolutely incapacitated. His fingers were swollen, ripped open and frozen in position. He couldn’t bend them at all for the pain. My heart broke to pieces when he couldn’t even open the wrapper of a lolly I gave him. Our children should not be made to suffer so! It is highly suspected that these creams contain extremely strong, unlabeled steroids. One mother of a child who has used these creams has undertaken to raise the $3,500 needed to send the cream to a laboratory where it will be tested for steroidal presence. If we can prove that these creams are harming children, then we can bring him before a Bais Din, preventing him from harming others. As a person that hears and sees these children suffering on a daily basis, I took upon myself to spread the word as part of my Skin Healing Gemach. If you have bought these creams for your child, or even if your heart just moves you to help prevent pain to other Yiddishe kinder, please help enable this mother to send the cream for testing. To participate in this extraordinary mitzvah please call the Skin Healing Gemach. 845.425.2773 Ruchy Reese/The Skin Healing Gemach
PARKS OF OUR OWN First of all, thank you! I pore over the great content and graphics each week and am so thankful that you’ve begun and taken off! The issue I’d like to bring up is something that I’ve often thought about, but took the impetus to ask you all about upon reading the feature about the takedown of the Mahwah eruv. One of the reasons listed seemed to be about the fact that we are all over their neighborhood, including going to their parks and playgrounds despite residency requirements. Monsey, Chestnut Ridge and Spring Valley residents, why don’t we have enough playgrounds — and not just small playgrounds — I know those exist — but beautiful, fun, large etc.? There is no park that is close by that I’ve

discovered that has a beautiful playground. They’re all pretty tiny and feature water that’s covered in algae, and in general, are just not so appealing. There are many that are 30–45 minutes away and, of course, are the ones with the residency requirements. Isn’t Monsey big enough and green enough and has enough kids for our own large fun playgrounds, bike paths, ponds etc.? Obviously the area that it could be in could be developed for more houses, but that’s a topic for another time. Why can’t we just update and revamp the parks we already have — put in creative and fun, large playgrounds for different ages, fields, bike paths, streams, walking areas, rope climbing, etc? Much has been written about the dilemma of upstairs/downstairs neighbors in the past few weeks. But I would like to touch on the issue of back/front and either-side neighbors. In the last couple of years, my neighborhood of once single-family homes has become a metropolis. A lot that appeared minuscule when one house was upon it, is suddenly sporting an edifice with more windows and doors than I can count. But that’s not my point, and I beg readers to please not write concerning the need for more multi-family housing. I am not in disagreement with you. I love trees and nature, but I prefer housing for my children too. What I would like to highlight is this: When your doorbell chimes, I check my door. When your phone rings, I check my caller ID. When your mixer goes on, I check my freezer. When your vacuum cleaner vrooms, I check my carpet. When your alarm rings, I check if anyone in my home needs waking. When your CD player blasts forth, I often want to offer you an alternative CD. When someone in your home makes a bracha, I answer “amen.” When someone sneezes, I bless you. When the baby cries, I recall the good ol’ days and when the teens clash, I chuckle over my present days. When your onions burn, I check my burners and when your cake smells heavenly, I’d gladly brew some coffee and settle down at your kitchen table. When your BBQ sizzles, I look in askance at the leftovers I’m serving. When your taxi beeps, I run to the door (even though I almost never call a cab!). When you run on your treadmill, your neighbors are bemoaning their waistlines. When your child practices his keyboard, I hope he’ll play a tune my family enjoys. When you tune into your favorite hotline, we share an uplifting shiur. When your son sings chazanus, I…well, that depends on his skill. But when your daughter practices her play or graduation niggun or simply sings for the enjoyment of it, I cringe. And that is my point. Dear neighbor, the sounds we share are part and parcel of living with congestion. Please understand that we can hear (especially if the windows are open) your singing, your loud conversation and even spats and reprimands which are meant to be private. We are not being nosy or intrusive; we simply can’t help it if you now live within earshot of our ears. You may hear the very same sounds emanating from our home, but we have it multiplied by six, eight or more. In addition, if your windows are facing those of a neighbor, please keep your shades drawn at all times — even in the daytime. It is a natural instinct to look into the brightly lit window of a home within feet of your own window. When making a simcha in your home, it’s predictable for the noise level to be elevated, but we don’t have to feel as though we’re practically in your dining room. Don’t tempt us and do your best to preserve your privacy. Please maintain a level of dignity and tznius as befits a member of Klal Yisroel. R.S.

As told to: Basya Lev
MY MOTHER IS WHEELCHAIR-BOUND, and it limits her independence. Although she is surrounded by her children, who all live near her during the year, in the summer months, each of us, except for one, spends the weeks in the country. For the past few years, though, my sister worked at a camp and my parents were able to stay there with her. Last year one of my brothers bought a house right near the bungalow colony I stay in over the summer, where two of my other siblings stay as well. Over the year he’d had work done on this house, making sure my parents would be able to comfortably stay with him. My sister, whom my parents usually stayed with, took a different job this summer, knowing my parents would be able to stay with our brother. However, something came up and the work on his house had to stop. Since there was still work to be done, it looked like my parents would not be able to stay with him this summer. They could not stay home unless we figured something out because our only sibling that was staying in the city would not be able to devote herself as much as my parents needed. Therefore, we got together to set up a rotation schedule of who would go into the city each day. Then, during my first week at my bungalow colony, a lady mention that she and her husband had rented out a bungalow for her daughter but the daughter would only be able to come for Shabbos. I told this to my brother who then spoke to the lady’s husband. He was able to arrange for my parents to use the bungalow during the week. Baruch Hashem, my parents were able to spend the summer surrounded by most of their children who could share in the care that they needed.

Parshas Eikev
By Malka Schneps
SHAINDY KNEW THAT MOVING her elderly father into her home was not only the right thing to do, it was what she truly wanted to do from the bottom of her heart — but was she capable of it? Her father’s medical issues were many, her medical knowledge was scant, her apartment was tiny, and her family obligations were already overwhelming as it was. Perhaps she had bitten off more than she could chew? Aryeh accepted an offer for a rabbinical position in a community that was just the right fit. He had always wanted to be a rabbi, so this should have felt like a dream come true for him. In reality, however, he suddenly felt inadequate for the tremendous burden of responsibility he had accepted upon his shoulders, which now felt so small. Instead of celebrating, Aryeh began to have second thoughts. Sitting at her vort, Dahlia looked over at her chasan’s family. Peyos, bekeshes, shtreimlech. She looked deeper into what this represented for her, and suddenly she wondered if she was really up to this. No more gebrokts? A complete change in her way of dress? Her husband always running to a tisch? What had felt so very right just a few hours earlier — she truly believed she had met her bashert — was suddenly not so clear anymore. What Shaindy, Aryeh, and Dahlia were all experiencing was fear. All of them understood that this next step in life was Hashem’s will for them, yet all of them were afraid that they were unable to overcome the many obstacles that would sure-
ly come their way along this new path they were about to take in life. In this week’s Parsha, the B’nei Yisrael were preparing to enter Eretz Yisrael, and they understood what this meant. True, the land was a land steeped in kedusha. True, this land was a good land, and it was promised to them. But stepping foot on its soil would take them one step closer to fighting numerous nations that far outnumbered them. Despite knowing that this was clearly Hashem’s will for them, it would be natural for them to feel fear. Therefore, Moshe Rabbeinu admonished them: “Ki somar bil’vav’cha rabim hagoyim… Lo sirah… – Will you say to yourself, ‘These nations are more numerous than I; how will I be able to drive them out?’ You shall not fear them…” (Devarim 7:17-18) When it comes to our avodas Hashem, we may encounter obstacles that appear to be daunting. The Kedushas Levi points out that that if we can overcome our fear, than Hashem will help us succeed. It seems that our fear of a difficult obstacle in our avodas Hashem itself is an obstacle. Once we overcome the obstacle of fear itself, Hashem will help us overcome the obstacle that caused us that fear. Shaindy realized that it was natural to fear that she would not be able to do right by both her father and her family — but she also realized that this the right thing to do by all accounts. She quickly quelled her fear by reminding herself that Hashem would surely help her do this mitzvah. Once calm, she was able to formulate a plan
Once we overcome the obstacle of fear itself, Hashem will help us overcome the obstacle that caused us that fear.

as to how she could make this work, such as setting up a rotation system for her siblings and all of the grandchildren who were old enough to participate in this mitzvah alongside her. All at once, the obstacles that had previously seemed so overwhelming suddenly seemed simple to overcome. After some reflection, Aryeh realized that if the community had selected him to be their rabbi, then it must be the ratzon of Hashem. He recalled the saying in Pirkei Avos 2:2 that the z’chus avos of the community is what sustains them. In other words, Aryeh realized that his success was guaranteed by the tzibbur’s z’chus avos. With that, he was able to put away his fear and relax. After that, his preparations went smoothly. As Dahlia looked around the room at her vort, she realized that just as it was bashert that she marry her chasan, it must be bashert that she make these changes in her lifestyle — and therefore it must all be good. She pushed away her fear and allowed herself to feel excited about this next stage in her life. After that, she found it much easier to implement those changes and embrace her new life. We all face challenges in our avodas Hashem, and it is only natural to feel fear when these challenges seem so great. The best way to eliminate those obstacles is to first eliminate our fear. Once we do that, we invoke the system outlined by the Kedushas Levi, and Hashem will help us the rest of the way. It may not be easy, but it is surely worth it.

O&R Warns Public to be on Alert After Man Poses as Meter Reader DAYS AFTER A MAN TRIED to gain entry into a Rockland County home by insisting that he worked for Orange and Rockland, the utility company is advising residents to be on the alert for impostors. WRCR reported that a man told a Stony Point resident on August 2nd that he was an O&R employee and had come to “read her gas pipe.” The resident refused to allow the man into her home when he was unable to produce identification proving that he worked for the utility company. Stony Point police confirmed that there were no O&R employees scheduled to work in the area on that day.
O&R issued a warning to the public asking them to be on the alert for any suspicious individuals who claim to be company employees. All O&R employees are required to carry photo IDs with them when on calls and to provide a unique ticket number for any prescheduled service calls. Employee identities can also be verified by calling the utility company at 845-577-3526. Company spokesperson Mike Donovan advised the public to keep their doors locked and to call police should they encounter anyone who tries to gain entry into their home and claims to work for the company but cannot produce a valid O&R photo ID card.
Longtime County Sheriff Dies JAMES KRALIK, A LONGTIME MEMBER of law enforcement who died at age 74 after battling cancer, is being remembered fondly for nearly five decades of service to Rockland County. Kralik, who lived in Suffern, was a chief of patrol for 20 years before he was elected as the county’s sheriff in 1991, according to The Journal News. He created the concept of color coordinated anti-terrorism zones to chart the likelihood of possible terrorist attacks, an idea that
later became state policy and was also adopted at the federal level. In addition to being an avid horseman who founded the county’s mounted unit, Kralik was also responsible for starting Rockland’s computer crimes unit, a marine unit and bomb squad. “Sheriff Kralik left a lasting impact on Rockland County and made it a better place for all who call it home,” said County Executive Ed Day.

Quinoa on the Go
Summer picnics make great childhood memories, and it doesn’t matter whether they’re done in a park or in the privacy of your own backyard spread upon an old washable summer quilt. The food should be easily transportable and uncomplicated; full-bodied nutritious salads make a great choice. Each of these recipes is almost a complete meal, including ingredients in every food group.

ON THE BLOCK
“COME ONE , COME ALL AND HAVE A BALL!” Chances are, you’ve seen a notice with similar captions at some point during the past few weeks. With summer on and school off, kids are looking to fill their vacation days with fun and exciting activities. And what better than a neighborhood carnival, complete with slush, cotton candy, booths and prizes? Problem is, booth ideas are becoming a bit boring… Really, how many times can you look for the penny in a bowl of flour — or pin the tail on the poor donkey? While the carnival spirit is exciting enough to attract all local tots and teens, why not up the creativity factor with some new and innovative booths? So what are you waiting for? Grab some markers and invite the neighbors; you’ve got a carnival brewing! A carnival like this doesn’t happen every day! Don’t forget to take lots of pictures! And we’d love to be invited, too! Or at least see some photos…
August 9, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 77 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Tic Tac Toe – Stick a Row! You’ve drawn Xs and Os to try and score a winning line, but have you ever tried throwing a winning line? In this fun activity, kids get three (or four, for the younger ones) ping pong balls that have a few rough pieces of stick-on Velcro. Prepare a Tic-Tac-Toe board by covering a foam board or cardboard with felt, and sticking four strips of duct tape onto the felt, forming the popular Tic-Tac-Toe board. Kids stand at a prearranged distance and try to get a winning row by throwing their sticky balls at the felted game board.
It's Feeding Time! This race, done in partners, is guaranteed to have your guests in fits of hysterical giggles. Partner A gets blindfolded and must attempt to feed Partner B, who has their hands tied behind their back. Which pair can complete the entire portion with most ending up in the mouth? Whether they’ll be feeding pudding, applesauce, or… baby food, have lots of napkins handy… and a camera!
78 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 9, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Clown Nose! Here’s another race, which will have kids in paroxysms of laughter even before they’ve begun… Both players get a dab of Vaseline on the tip of their nose. (To ensure proper hygiene, apply the Vaseline with Q-Tips and discard every time.) A pile of cotton balls is then placed in front of each player. At the “go” signal, the pair bends down and, without using hands, must get a cotton ball to stick to the glob on the nose. Who’s the first professional clown?
Ball Pit! You can re-create your own ball pit found in indoor play centers! You’ll need a bunch of inflated colorful balloons thrown into a large size kiddie pool. One of those balloons should have a large smiley face drawing. The smiley balloon is hidden in the lot, waiting for the kids to find him… The player jumps into the pool and gets 30 seconds to find the smiley face. You only win if you don’t pop the others!
Pool Noodle Bowling! Bowling is a popular game which has been made into a carnival booth many times. But here’s an interesting twist. Instead of simply rolling a ball to knock down those pins, add challenge and originality by using a split pool noodle. Split a noodle in half and cut it as short as you’d like. Kids will send a toy car or marble down the center indent of the pool noodle to knock down the most bottles possible. For best results, use a heavy weight car/marble and lightweight bottles/pins.
Prize Surprise! This fun punching game will have kids coming back again and again, so make sure to prepare quite an amount. Use hot glue to secure rows of colorful plastic cups to a piece of foam board or cardboard. Fill each cup with one surprise such as a cheap prize, a small candy, a winning ticket, etc. Then, cover each cup with a small napkin or piece of tissue paper and glue it all around the rim of the cup. Stand the board upright with the napkin/tissue paper covers facing the players. Kids will punch into their cup of choice and find their special gift! August 9, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 79 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Pool Tube Stack! Grab a partner who’s ready to turn into a tube building… Partner A gets a stack of 3–4 inflated pool tubes, and stands at a predetermined distance. Partner B will pose with their hands up, while partner A will throw the tubes trying to get it onto Partner B. Which pair can turn their partner into a tube stack first? For best results, use tubes with large inner spaces.
Water Explosion! Got good aim? Try another fun one for partners! Prepare two empty soda bottles by cutting a large hole in the center. Attach string/ribbon with hot glue to the bottle’s two bottom sides, enabling players to place the bottle on their head and tie it under their chin. While Player A stands at a predetermined distance with the bottle tied to their head, Player B must throw a wet sponge or mini water balloon at the target and aim for the hole in the bottle! It’s a good idea to give brave Player A a pair of goggles…
80 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 9, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Sand Art Table! Want a real professional carnival? Have kids take home their own handmade keepsake. Sand art is a fun project that many mothers don’t appreciate indoors… Prepare a table with spritz bottles filled with various colored sand, along with little funnels if necessary. Kids can purchase little decorative bottles and vases to fill with their unique pattern of sand.
Photo Booth! Don’t forget to create memories by preparing a photo booth! Cover a coat rack with a piece of material or tablecloth, and drape a banner or balloons across the top. Prepare a box of fun props, like, cute hats, funny glasses, clown wigs and noses, etc. Kids can pick a prop and pose while their picture will be taken. Cheese!

THIS WEEK we’re doing a
CORPORATE EVENT IN A BACKYARD!
100 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 9, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
TA B L E S
A wood runner atop the white tablecloth brings a rustic feel to the table, and creates the perfect backdrop to these symmetrically lined centerpieces. Towering over wooden lanterns and modest flower arrangements, these tall glass vases play an important role in filling outdoor expansiveness.
What better place to foster camaraderie and team spirit than the great outdoors? Working with a rustic theme, we bring white and pale green into the picture for a softer touch.
Since we’re having a buffet-style barbecue and bar, no elaborate place settings are necessary. A wooden charger, decorative knife, clear drinking glass and dainty candle prove that a cleanlook tabletop can be a wower as well!
White cushions backed by thin pieces of crossed wood are the natural choice for an event set in nature.
August 9, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 101 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
BUFFET
BAR
While wood remains the name of the game at the buffet too, fruitfilled, crude baskets are friendly bursts of color, livening the scene. Creating height and spilling over with nature’s abundance, these quaint, wooden crates are charming and purposeful all at once!
Designed like logs cut in half, these unconventional salad bowls sure are attention grabbers. Various shapes allow salads to present differently.
These silver, condiment-filled dishes displayed on a wooden disc add a dash of elegance to an otherwise informal affair. With these wood trays and minishelves, even basic buns are a reason to display.
102 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 9, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
What’s a summer barbecue without a refreshing cocktail? At our bamboo bar, an array of lemon, orange, olives, cherry, mint, amongst some other popular choices, not only quenches our guests’ thirst, but does so in a most attractive and refreshing way!
What’s more authentic than a barrel filled with spirits? Overflowing with ice, the barrel doesn’t only keep the champagne cool; it dresses the act with elegance.
BARBEQUE Mini peppers, squash, corn, eggplant and some other veggies form a brilliant medley of colors that doesn’t only fill the color palette, but is a delight for the palate as well.
Stacks of raw meat allow guests to select the type of meat they’d like, and take it to the BBQ chef. Not only do they choose their own meat, they also choose how well they’d like it done!
CANDLES Candles in wooden lanterns and candlesticks sprinkled throughout the yard not only blend into the theme; they help light the night when the sun bids farewell.
OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY PLANNED AND EXECUTED HUNDREDS OF ORIGINAL EVENTS IN A MYRIAD OF THEMES. WHILE EACH WAS DIFFERENT AND TOTALLY FRESH, THEY WERE ALIKE IN THEIR AUTHENTICITY OF THEIR HOST’S DISTINCTIVE EXPRESSION. WE PLEDGE TO COLLABORATE WITH YOU AND REALIZE YOUR DREAM EVENT WHILE RESPECTING YOUR BUDGETARY APPETITE.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE!
KLEIN’S CARAMEL CONES: GOOD OL’ ICE CREAM IS NEW AGAIN! It’s the oldest, most classic of things. It’s the newest, most exciting of things. Sounds like a paradox?
10 YEARS WITH THOUSANDS OF SECURE TRANSACTIONS.
Well, as with all products introduced by the kings of kosher ice cream, even the classics keep being reinvented and reintroduced with a delicious twist, a fun addition with a redesigned study in yumminess. Today we introduce to you the totally classic - yet totally new; ordinary - yet reinvented, ice cream cone. While there is nothing as basic, yummy and summer-like as a good ol’ ice cream cone, the new Klein’s Caramel Cones are simply beyond regular. Just consider the makeup of this cone:

A delicious, crispy sugar cone lined with authentic milk chocolate, filled with Klein’s caramel ice cream and topped with decadent
caramel fudge. Are you salivating yet? You’ve never anything like it!
tasted
We say that with confidence, as nothing else can compare to this piece of Klein’s carameliciousness! Once you taste this, you too will agree that it is a word! Throughout the summer of 2017 and throughout the rich sixdecade creamy history of Klein’s, we are constantly being told that every new product is a “must try”. And indeed, this outstanding cone is yet another must-try produced by Klein’s. After all, a company that keeps churning out one must-try product after another, summer after summer, must be doing something right! L A I R AE ADVENTURES
If you get to go away during this Bein Hazmanim season, that’s really wonderful! But if a getaway just doesn’t fit into your schedule, budget or plans, there are so many wonderful day trips you can take. Ropes courses and ziplines will usually rank high on any boy’s bucket list, and one of these locations, all of them under an hour away, may be the perfect adventure with which to treat your yeshiva boy. One of the greatest perks of tree climbing? The shade.

I’VE WATCHED NEIGHBORS FILL UP THEIR cars early Sunday morning, kids clutching drinks and snacks, and heady with excitement. And stocked with patience: patience for the traffic, traffic, traffic on both ends of the journey. Is a scant few hours visiting in camp worth hours of traffic? “No,” says one sister. “But I can’t give it up either.” She spends the Shabbos preceding visiting day in the mountains. “Partially,” says an aunt. She travels into Monsey from her Brooklyn home on Friday preceding visiting day to cut the traffic time in half. “Not at all,” says a neighbor, who warns her daughter before camp that her daughter can be the visitor on visiting day — by coming home. This year, it’s my turn to voice an opinion. My son is going to camp for the first time, and I’m fantabulously excited for him. As for myself, not so much. For starters, I’ll miss him immensely. And worry, worry, worry. I know that my Shacharis each morning will intensify in sincerity as I daven for him to have good chavrusos and melamdim, and wholesome fun. I’d love the opportunity of visiting day to see his “new
home” firsthand. But, on the flip side, I find traveling extremely difficult, and traffic compounds the pressure. City simchos and appointments, when travel is inevitable, knocks me out for days. Each time, I weigh importance of traveling against the wear and tear it does to my physical well-being, and the resultant wife and mother I am. Visiting day calls for tough decision-making. When I was a camper, I was super lucky. My parents were in a bungalow colony within five-minute driv-
A VISITOR JUST FOR ME ing distance of camp, and I reaped the benefits. Laundry lines? Not for me. I sent a laundry bag home and Mommy did the washing, drying, ironing, folding (and tucked some goodies into the laundry bag, too). Missing my family? Long Friday afternoons were the perfect setup for me to enjoy their company and catch up with all the family news without another camper breathing down my neck, awaiting her turn at the phone booth. Visiting day, though, was lackluster. I’d hang out at
the gate watching parents, siblings and even grandparents drive up with hugs and exclamations and bulging bags of goodies. I, who’d just seen my family, got no “So good to see you.” Or “We missed you sooo much!”The pudgy, sticky baby sister hug and kiss too, wasn’t there. No dramatic reunions for me. One summer, as a camp staff member, hanging out at the gate, watching the excitement through a stranger’s view, I received a visitor. One of my coworkers had

come up to the mountains to visit relatives, and she stopped by at my camp too. This was a new experience for me. A visitor on visiting day! Someone came just to see me! And the package she brought! I have a weak spot for the red Zetov Super Snacks. She remembered — and she brought me a dozen! (To this day my kids bring that home from their school siyums — edible or otherwise.) Of course it wasn’t the snacks, but the fact that she not only came, but remembered my preferences. It showed me how much she cared, making that one memorable visiting day. From that point on, the words “visiting day” began to elicit the image of my friend, standing at the camp gate, with her Super Snacks care package. Funny how, the more years that go by, the more meaningful this memory becomes. And now, when I get ready to send my son to camp, the word visiting day evokes those warm, fuzzy feelings of seeing a special someone who cared about me. It’s almost like the mention of the word visiting day is synonymous with my friend and red Super Snacks! Back to my question: Is it worth it being out of sorts for a few days to give your child a only a few hours of a visit? A resounding yes! I want to paint an image in my son’s mind. I want him, in years hence, to recall the image of his parents and younger siblings surrounding him with love and exclamation and some none-too-gentle pudgy, too-wet kisses from the little ones — and of course some packages of red Super Snacks. Because this feeling of warmth that will hopefully spread through him when he thinks of visiting day is priceless. And I want to give him that gift.

An Interstate Event with a Community Agenda For builders and property developers of Upstate New York, the OJBA is a recognized educational support group. With its success rate and growing exhibitor base throughout its 3 year consecutive OJBA Catskills event, the members of the Orthodox Jewish community receive valuable lessons and coveted interaction with the industry’s best. The who’s who and what’s what in property development, property rehab, property management and construction divisions get acquainted and share business connections which benefit the corporate relationships throughout the year. Attendees and exhibitors await the annual meet and greet as a way of starting and continuing the communication process which is integral in the business of white and blue collar interaction. The OJBA is proud to be presenting every scope of building professional and is launching its biggest event yet. Scheduled for November 29, 2017, the OJBA Interstate Event will expand to include Orange and Rockland counties as well as its neighboring counties of North Jersey. The full day event will be an epic fusion of property experts with a wide scope of connectivity. Having so many like-minded individuals under one roof will coordinate an iconic presence with many viable resources at the disposal of every exhibitor and attendee. The OJBA staff has effectively signed a proposal with the Meadowlands Exhibition Center for its mega OJBA Interstate Event which is scheduled for this fall. Featuring expansive exhibitor space and a grand ballroom for booth visibility, the event is scheduled to be a union of epic standards.

Each exhibitor booth will be strategically placed so that every company gets the best representation and sales approach. Wider aisles mean more networking space and with OJBA it’s mostly about networking and sharing. The OJBA’s Meilech Weber refers to the upcoming event as ‘one that the community and region has never before witnessed.’ In his words: ‘The preparation is intense, but we are motivated by the incredible response and generous blessings of renowned Rabbis and prominent business associates who are very appreciative of our community oriented efforts’. ‘So many of our friends and company associates are in the business of property dev or construction and there are constantly new advances, building codes and requirements. It’s hard to keep up with it all and here we have the coordination of all experts who will be gathered with a unified vision of spreading the education and sharing the value.’ Changes in the construction industry are far reaching, with recent updates in energy efficient budget cuts and sustainable building solutions that require skill and expertise. There are also municipal laws and requirements, among other key components in the industry specifics. Varied suppliers and subcontractors are also going to attend the event, with access to leading builders that they’ve previously never been affiliated with. No company is too big or too small to attend. The OJBA’s Interstate Event is how industry leaders and pioneers get to internalize the lessons and actualize the connections. We look forward to greeting exhibitors and attendees. Be sure to register online at ojbanewyork.com.

HISTORY:
A Mexican folk myth tells of a wealthy farmer who owned over 100,000 acres of corn. The farmer took some of his surplus corn and dried it up to feed his chickens. On a summer day, while he was feeding the chickens, he heard a popping sound. As frightened as he was about the sudden noise, he looked down to see a white piece of fluff. The farmer actually kept this new food a secret until his death.
When Perry Spencer realized that his chocolate candy bar had melted by the magnetron (power tube), he decided to see if it would pop popcorn. It did — resulting in the “invention” of microwave popcorn.
During the Great Depression, popcorn was fairly inexpensive at 5–10 cents a bag and became popular. Thus, while other businesses failed, the popcorn business thrived.
During WWII, sugar was rationed and candy was hard to come by. Americans compensated by eating three times as much popcorn as they had before. It was also taken overseas as a treat for American servicemen. Mexico is the largest U.S. popcorn market and accounts for almost a third of all exports. With the impending renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, U.S. popcorn industries are at risk.
FUN FACTS:
Popcorn is a combination of the two words: Popped corn. Americans eat around 17 billion quarts of popcorn every year. This amount would fill the Empire State Building 18 times. By volume, it’s America’s favorite snack with each person eating an average of 68 quarts of popcorn each year.
Twenty-five states in the U.S. grow popcorn. Nebraska takes the lead with their estimated 250 million pounds of popcorn per year. That’s equivalent to a quarter of all the popcorn produced in the U.S.

Each kernel contains a small drop of water inside. There is also a circle of soft starch surrounded by the hard outer surface. As the kernel heats, the drop of water expands and pressure starts to build up. When the hard surface eventually gives way, the popcorn explodes. During the explosion, the soft starch inside the kernel inflates and bursts, turning the entire kernel inside out.
The ideal popping temperature for popcorn is 400–460 degrees Fahrenheit. A kernel will pop, on average, when it reaches 347 degrees Fahrenheit.
KNOW YOUR LINGO: The world’s largest popcorn ball was created by volunteers in Sac City, Iowa in February, 2009. It weighed 5,000 pounds, stood over 8 feet tall, and measured 28.8 feet in circumference. It took 253 volunteers, 12 hours and 40 minutes to make this ball. It took 900 pounds of popcorn, 2,700 pounds of sugar, and 1,400 pounds of syrup to make this.
Popcorn has been sold at events since 1912. It has been a big money maker not only because popcorn is overpriced, but also because people usually get thirsty and, consequently, buy sodas or water as well.
Illinois has named popcorn their official snack. Since 1958, there has been an annual “popcorn day.”
The American Diabetes Association uses popcorn as a bread exchange. It provides the necessary roughage and fiber to aid digestion and the overall health of the body.
How high can popcorn kernels pop? Up to three feet in the air.
• Popped popcorn comes in two shapes: snowflake (sold at popcorn stands because it looks and pops bigger and fluffier) or mushroom (used for candy confections because it doesn’t crumble). • Unpopped popcorn kernels are called spinsters or old maids. (Quality popcorn should produce 98% popped kernels with under 2% being spinsters.) • Popability refers to the percentage of kernels that pop.
JANUARY 19 is National Popcorn Day.
APRIL 7TH is Caramel Popcorn Day.
OCTOBER is National Popcorn Month.

Days to Serenity
HI EVERYBODY! You’re probably done with all the laundry just to realize that you’re not done with the laundry just to learn that, baruch Hashem, you’ll never quite be done with laundry, because, well, it’s laundry. So for those that are still doing laundry because well, laundry, I’ll tell you one thing: We have laundry to do. We have cleaning to do. We have organizing to do. We have laundry to do. We have cleaning to do. We have organizing to do. The sentences that need repeating get repeated. Sorry, computer error. The sooner we accept that we’ll always be busy with these things, the easier it all gets. Take dinner, for example. If you accept the fact that dinner needs to be made Every Single Night Then you will be calmer with the process in knowing that it’s okay if one night The supper Is Not Perfect. Because the next night supper is served again. My point? Whatever you do around the house does not have to be perfect. Whatever you do does not have to be rushed or stressfully done. Do it peacefully. Let the little kids help. It’ll be okay. There it is. My wisdom that you all know. (It might have just made you more nervous with the knowledge that you have to prepare supper every night, but, yeah, still sharing that wisdom.)
THURSDAY, AUGUST 10: SEFORIM SHELVES CONTINUED You did the top few shelves. Repeat the instructions for the bottom few. To reiterate: If you don’t have place on the shelves, donate some stuff. My kids are currently looking for new novels, say, around every five seconds or so. They seem to devour books, which I’m very happy about. Searching for these titles they can read: How to Go to Sleep at a Reasonable Hour For the younger ones: How to Wake Up at a Reasonable Hour Or: How to Read a Book More Slowly So You Still Have

What to Read When You’re Bored How to Read the Chapter Faster So You Can Get Up from the Couch When Your Mother Calls If you have any of these titles, I’ll pay whatever you ask. There are many more titles I’m looking for. Message me for more details. FRIDAY, AUGUST 11: CUTLERY DRAWER It’s kind of a tricky when it comes to the cutlery drawer. If you have a few different sets merged together, keep the ones you’re actually using. Listen up, my friends! One soup ladle! One spatula! One masher! The egg slicer or other bulkier items don’t necessarily belong in the cutlery drawer. Rusty stuff? Definite no-nos. Cherry pitter or whatever it’s called, when did you use it last? If you don’t have a divider yet, make some dividers out of tissue boxes. Cut them to fit your drawers and have your kids color or paint them. SUNDAY, AUGUST 13: CRAFT CENTER • Glues, scissors, scotch tape, glue gun. • Markers, crayons, colored pencils, pastels, paint brushes, paint, play dough, puff paint. • Colored paper, white paper, coloring books, paint books. • Glitter, googly eyes, pom poms, pipe cleaners (remember those?), beads. These are pretty much the basic stuff your crafts center should have. Of course if you have the space and enjoy doing crafts with the kids (or yourself!) there are loads of stuff to upgrade your collection. I usually

Throw away empty or dried out glue, broken crayons, dried-out paint or markers and cutless (is that even a word?) scissors. MONDAY, AUGUST 14: CHILDREN’S CLOTHING — TOPS/SHIRTS “Hi. This is Hindy, calling my mother from my closet. Can’t find my green shirt. Can’t find the white shell. What should I wear today???” “HI. This is your mother calling (shouting) from the fridge. Whatever! Hurry, your bus is almost here. Just wear whatever you want.” If I’m being a bit dramatic, great! Your closets need less than 22 minutes. Otherwise, please stay on the line. Or just stay here on the page with me. • Fold the tops standing up and put them in a bin, not piled. Keep them in the order of when they get worn. Hang shirts. • Get rid of what wasn’t worn in a while, is stained or torn. • Make a pile of whatever needs mending or to be dry cleaned, and take it out of the closet. This needs repeating, but I try not to repeat myself more than once in an article. I try not to repeat myself more than once in an article. TUESDAY, AUGUST 15: CHILDREN’S SKIRTS/TIGHTS, PANTS/ SOCKS The same technique gets used with skirts/ pants. • If your son and daughter share a closet, use the 4-tier skirt hangers,(I find the 6-tier ones get too messy) and use them for pants as well. Hang the pants upside down. • Color-code the skirts. Go through the tights and socks. Matching pair not there? Bye-bye. Hole in the tights beyond repair? So long. Real Estate Choosing the Related Professionals LAST WEEK WE SPOKE ABOUT how purchasing a home is like a shidduch, and we discussed the realtor’s role, but we didn’t go into detail regarding the mortgage professional and the attorney, who both play vital roles in the purchasing of a home. All mortgage professionals are not the same. For the most part, they all have very similar products, rates and fees. It’s how they structure their loans, move them through the process and the flexibility they have or not that will differentiate one from the other. Last week I got a call from someone in Lakewood. They were supposed to be closing their loan after the Nine Days and their mortgage broker gave them a rate that they felt was high. After checking the interest rates, the rate was about ½% higher than our rates. The person told me that I was the second mortgage professional that they had called who told them the same thing. I advised them to stay with their mortgage person, because they had to close soon, but to tell him that other banks have a much lower rate and see if he can match the rate. He first told them that he couldn’t match the rate. Then he told them that he was not allowed to give a lower rate because he gives higher rates and one person can’t get a lower rate than the next. Different lenders or brokers handle the mortgage process differently. In the previous example the mortgage person was inflexible when it came to rate. Sometimes banks are like that and brokers have more flexibility. Sometimes a smaller bank can offer the best of both worlds, offering the stability of a bank but the flexibility of a broker. Some clients want quick responses and that is all that is

It boils down to one thing and one thing only: trust.
important, so a busy mortgage lender may not work for them; another person doesn’t mind the team concept and understands that if their mortgage broker is busy, they are most likely successful and therefore want the guarantee of a positive end result, so they will want that relationship. But to me it boils down to one thing and one thing only: trust. Do you trust your mortgage professional in handling your paperwork, structuring your mortgage loan, mitigating problems, dealing with difficulties before they become emergencies? Do you trust them to get the job done and done right? It also helps to like them. To me, if the clients and the professional have that high level of trust, everything else will fall into place. Just make sure the lines of communication remain open and the method of preferred communication is established. The same is true for the attorney. There must be that level of trust that the attorney will protect the borrower’s down payment and look out for their interests throughout the process. Some attorneys are solo practitioners, they pick up their phone all day and night while others are 9–5 only with secretaries and paralegals. Recently I worked with a client who worked at a jail and therefore was not available ever between 9 and 5. She therefore needed an attorney who was available after hours. In my mind, again, it boils down to the same one thing: trust. A buyer must trust their attorney. If they don’t, the transaction and experience will never be smooth and satisfactory. So before choosing any professional in the homebuying venture, see if you trust them, have established a good method of communication with the expected response time and only lastly, as a bonus, do you have to like them!
