DOES HE REALLY HAVE TO TOUCH EVERYTHING? TIME TO TOUCH BASE WITH KIDS FIRST
If your child has the need to be overly hands-on with everything within reach, your child may have a sensory issue. Other kids may have the opposite reaction to sensory stimuli and recoil from certain textures, noises or visual cues. Kids with sensory issues can have a hard time in school and relationships due to either overor under-stimulation, causing them to feel uncomfortable and unhappy. They might be impulsive, disorganized and have difficulty following instructions. They might even seem disconnected from the world around them. Kids First Occupational Therapists are specialists in getting to the root of your child’s sensory and general processing issues, helping your child process the world in a manner that will set your child up for success.

You outdid yourself with awesome coverage on Monsey’s iconic Lake Suzanne! Hopefully, you’ve brought some readers back to a time when the lake was a wondrous marvel. I’m sure you’ll be inundated with letters concerning the lake’s current state of neglect. I wish your publication would be the conduit for starting a strong campaign to restore its former beauty. I believe our collective voices will reach the personnel or commission designated for this purpose. If anyone is aware of responsible party under whose jurisdiction this lake is, please write in. Let us petition for a working fountain, clock (to move past its preferential eight o’clock!), beautiful landscape and clean, non-green water. Another suggestion which would benefit our town is a small beautiful park on the dried-up side of Lake Suzanne, directly across Elaine Place. It can include a large sandbox, swings and soft play area for children. Anyone in favor or opposed? Looking forward to your opinions, T.L.
UP JEW HILL Wow! I really enjoyed this past issue of The Monsey View. It is absolutely fascinating to learn about Monsey’s history. Now I am wondering: How did my street get its name?! Here’s an interesting fact about Spring Valley and Monsey up-the-hill that I learned when I bought my house from a 86-year-old woman: As a child, she and her friends and family would call the area up Maple Avenue “Jew Hill,” due to the density of the Jewish population. “We didn’t mean anything bad by it,” Mary told us, “just that it was the area where your people lived!” Although she was a very nice, I wonder if “Jew Hill” was dubbed thus by the same people who posted the “No dogs or Jews” sign... RE: WHAT’S IN A STREET NAME? I wanted to add some details you missed in your feature on Monsey street names, and to point out a correction. Hopal Lane is named not for a Mr. Hoffman, like you had written, but for Mr. Hoffnung. Fanley Woods was named for Ellish’s wife, whose name was Fannie. In fact, the lake was first known as Fanley Lake. Park Lane was built by builder Dave Paikin, for whom Paikin Drive is named. I saw you clipped some advertisements for home prices in Fanley Woods in the ‘60s. It may be interesting for your readers to know that way back then taxes on these homes were approximately $100 for the year. Sunrise Drive got its name from the fact that sunrise can be seen from its hill. A Long-time Monsey Resident
RE: WHAT’S IN A STREET NAME? Thank you for the interesting article on the Monsey streets. I just wanted to add the history of some other street names. In the old YSV Girl’s building there were plaques with the names of the donors of the building. Some of the names were familiar sounding, such as Laura Paiken and Fannie Ellish. That sheds light on the street names Laura and Paikin. I’m wondering if Fannie has any connection to Fanley Woods. (Editor’s note: She was the wife of Alfred J. Ellish, the original owner.) If anyone can review those plaques, if they still exist, we’d probably have more information. M.F.
ON-THE-MARK INSPIRATION I wanted to reach out to let you know how inspired I am by Malka Schneps’ weekly parsha articles. Her messages are so practical and so powerful. This week, especially, an idea she mentioned was so thought-provoking. Although it wasn’t the main point of the article, it resonated with me and made me aware of something I never had thought twice about. Malka wrote how sometimes a person may daven just so they should be able to partake of food. I must say I never thought about my hasty birchas hashachar in that manner, and it truly enlightened me, that yes, my davening is not an act onto itself — it is my passport that allows me to eat breakfast. How many times is my mind on my food as I hastily mumble the brachos? The message hit home and I hope to change my focus. Thank you for the constant inspiration. A Reader
NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE ME! I would like to thank Ruchy Reese for raising awareness about steroid damage (Topical Steroid Withdrawal or Red Skin Syndrome). Ironically, at first, I didn’t think the information was in any way applicable as I had always been careful of using steroids, fully aware of their ensuing side effects. What I didn’t know, though, was that even a simple moisturizer can be the culprit, concealing steroids in an innocent-looking cosmetic jar.

For close to twenty years I have been using a clean-looking moisturizing cream that I consistently bought at a popular cosmetician who sells products from her home in Manhattan and has been catering to the heimishe crowd for years. Somehow, this product worked better than any other I’ve ever tried and I was practically sold. Recently, I ran out of the cream, and until I didn’t refill, I noticed my skin was breaking out in red blotches and flaking, a sign of addiction, which magically disappeared as soon as I resumed the application. This phenomenon raised a red flag and I began to question the integrity of the product. Together with a friend of mine, also a user of this cream, we decided to discontinue using it and both of us broke out with all the classical Topical Steroid Withdrawal symptoms. The pain, the itch and the suffering of TSW is indescribable. No Yiddishe mama, or anyone else, should have to go through this. I beg everyone reading this, if you have a cream that is privately compounded, or works magically well, or know anyone who does, please let them know that it may be tainted with steroids, and they should question its contents. This cosmetician did not admit to putting steroids in, but I was convinced it was the case. It took a lot of persistence and in the end, b’siyatta d’shmaya, she admitted to a close family member who confronted her on my behalf that she did indeed put steroids in all these years! I don’t know if all of her products have steroids, but some definitely do, certainly the white moisturizing lotion I was using. So while I always shied away from steroids, I unintentionally applied the drug to my facial area, where the skin is so thin that damage happens drastically, severely and quickly! Following instructions of Daas Torah, I am publicizing this discovery to prevent other people from suffering by continuing to feed their bodies with this harmful drug, Please note that upon stopping this cream you will likely develop steroid withdrawal symptoms, which can be anywhere from mild to severe and may require medical support. I strongly recommend you contact for information and support The Skin Healing Gemach, at 845.425.2773 or TSWfighter@gmail.com or contact the world expert in this condition, the dermatologist Dr. Marvin Rapaport at 310.274.4401. P.S. For those of you who have, Baruch Hashem, not been affected by this cream, know that rather than entrusting your skin care to private people who rely on your business and your addiction (which is one of the reasons why they add steroids to the mix), you’re always safer to use things like 100% coconut oil, or products from large, internationally recognized brands like Vaseline, Aveeno, etc. C.R.
As told to: Basya Lev
MY DAUGHTER’S GLASSES needed to be picked up from Refuah Health Center, but life was very hectic and I just wasn’t getting around to it. One day my neighbor came to my house asking to use my telephone to call a taxi to Refuah Health Center. Excitedly, I asked her if she would be able to pick up my daughter’s glasses and have them fix my glasses as well. She said she would be glad to do it. Two hours later I was holding my fixed glasses and my daughter’s new glasses in my hands. Although I hoped my neighbor’s phone would be fixed soon, I gave thanks to Hashem that she came to my house to ask to use the phone when hers wasn’t working.

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:
EDITION CHAPTER 3
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY look like for me, as a location manager and a nutrition counselor? Well, it starts at 6:00 a.m. when my alarm goes off for the first time. I take my phone off airplane mode and check what I missed since shutting it at 1:00 a.m., five measly hours earlier. There are usually a few dozen messages, mostly work-related — not from clients per se — mostly from our staff of almost fifty employees. It is hard for me to imagine that a year ago there were less than ten of us on the Nutrition by Tanya team. I respond to anything urgent, and snooze my alarm for a few more minutes of blissful sleep. After I snooze once or twice I get myself up and out fast, because my first client of the day is usually scheduled for 7:45 a.m., and my commute takes 33 minutes. And if I run late I get stuck behind the train tracks in Monsey a block from my office which bumps it up to 36 minutes — my penance for hitting snooze. I like to settle myself in for a few minutes before my first client arrives, so if you are still following my morning schedule, you will realize that I spend very little time in the morning getting ready, and even less time sending my children off to school. Yes, those of you who know me personally know that I have five kids k”ah, so the morning routine is mostly left to my husband, while I dole out breakfast, hugs and kisses on the run. Quality time with my family comes later in the day. When this all feels a bit insane, which it does from time to time, I like to remind myself that some of our even crazier staff members see clients as early as 6:00 a.m.! I also like to remember that before my recent move
to Clifton, my commute from Staten Island to Monsey was anywhere from one to two hours depending on traffic conditions, and when I was working at the Williamsburg location, it was almost that long plus an extra fortyfive minutes finding parking. Once I am settled in, my day bounces back and forth between seeing clients and managing the Monsey and Monroe locations. My number-one focus during the workday, though, is my clients. When I am in session my phone goes back to airplane mode and my attention goes solely to the person sitting across the desk from me. If a client is late I use those few minutes to tackle my list. A quick

feel like my own, and their successes do too. email to a new company interested in placing a TAP logo on a product. A message to Evergreen to find out what products are needed for the coming week. A response to a client’s nutrition-related question. A bit of research for a new recipe we want to share with our followers. A few more message responses. A quick poke out my office door to see if maybe my client has arrived, and a moment to confirm with the secretary that the client is on her way. A few lines written for my next article. Confirm new office policy with a staff member. Schedule an interview with a potential staff member. My client arrives, and my phone
goes back onto airplane mode — silent is not enough. Clients get my full and undivided attention. The trick to managing my day is my never-ending, always present lists — a skill I learned from Tanya. I keep my lists on my phone and have alarms set to remind me to check my lists. Tanya uses good old pen and paper, but the idea is the same. Make lists, keep organized, get things done in an efficient manner. Lots of work doesn’t scare us! I have a sticky note that I keep by my desk that reads: If I have: 1 minute — respond to messages 5 minutes — review a nutrition plan 10 minutes — research recipes/ products This way, if I have even an extra sixty seconds it doesn’t go to waste. The hectic, energized pace doesn’t stop when I get home. This isn’t the type of job that can be contained in a typical 9–5 work day. There are times when it is difficult to balance it all, but the rewards are enormous. My clients’ struggles feel like my own, and their successes do too. And managing a growing, thriving business where something new is always brewing makes my every day feel like an adventure! Basya Kovacs is a nutrition counselor at Nutrition by Tanya and is the manager of the Monsey, Monroe, and soon-to-come Staten Island locations. Nutrition by Tanya offers personalized and practical weight management and nutrition counseling for men, women and children. Nutrition by Tanya has locations in Boro Park, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Monsey, Lakewood, Crown Heights, Five Towns and Monroe. The office can be reached at 844-TANYA-DIET.

By Malka Schneps
ELISHEVA PUT DOWN THE PHONE and turned to her teenaged daughter. “Devorah, I can’t believe what a big mitzvah just came our way! A very special couple is getting married. They are both gerim, and the women of the community want to help make their chasunah spectacular. Mrs. Green is hosting a fundraising luncheon this Sunday, and I volunteered to make salads and to bake. Just imagine — the opportunity to do hachnasas kallah and ahavas hager at the same time!” Devoiry’s eyes lit up. “This will be great — let’s get to work!” Mother and daughter pulled out their cookbooks and decided on the best recipes. From compiling lists of ingredients to shopping to baking to assembling, they put their hearts into every aspect of this special mitzvah. As they were entering the grocery for one last ingredient they had forgotten, they passed a man collecting money at the entrance. They had seen him countless times before, as he occupied the same spot for years, with his small plastic bag in hand to receive donations. As Elisheva and her daughter walked into the store, the man put his bag out toward them, but they walked past as if they had not seen him. To some extent, he was just another fixture of the store to them. The shopping wagons went here, the strollers were parked there, and the man sat by the door. The only acknowledgement of his presence was a twinge of guilt mixed with annoyance. The feeling soon passed. This week’s Parsha includes the mitzvah of shiluach hakan — sending away the mother bird. Chazal say that the Torah only reveals the reward for two mitzvos: the hardest mitzvah (kibbud av v’eim) and the easiest (shiluach hakan), and both have the same reward: arichas yamim — long life. (Devarim Rabbah 6:2) How could it be that the easiest mitzvah in the Torah should have the same reward as the hardest mitzvah? The Midrash answers that Hashem does not want us to weigh and measure
one mitzvah against another based upon its perceived difficulty. Rather, Hashem wants us to fulfill all of the mitzvos wholeheartedly. The Sfas Emes asks how it could be that the easiest mitzvah and the hardest mitzvah should both bring the same reward. He answers that the reward of each is appropriate. A “big” mitzvah appeals to us because we understand that it is important. Because we value the mitzvah, we find it very easy to do put forth great effort into fulfilling the mitzvah enthusiastically. When it comes to the “small” mitzvos, however, we do not perceive them as important, so we find it very difficult to do these mitzvos meticulously and enthusiastically. This is the reason why a “small,” easy mitzvah might have the same reward as a “big” and difficult mitzvah; the difficulty is in getting ourselves to value the small mitzvah and perform it with the same enthusiasm as a big mitzvah. Thus, it makes sense that both mitzvos should have the same reward. The easier the mitzvah is to perform, the harder it is for us to see the greatness of the mitzvah and bring enthusiasm to its performance. In the opening story, Elisheva and her daughter Devorah understand immediately that the mitzvos of hachnosas kallah and ahavas hager were very big mitzvos. Therefore, it did not take much difficulty for the to become very enthusiastic about doing them with great passion and joy. When passing the man who begged every day for small donations outside the grocery store, it was very difficult for them to value the greatness of dropping a donation in his bag. It is possible that the reward for giving tzedakah to the poor man might be a greater mitzvah than cooking and baking for the fundraiser. May we merit having the opportunity to perform many mitzvos, great and small, and may we all come to see the tremendous value in performing even the “smallest” of mitzvos with great joy and enthusiasm.
Hashem does not want us to weigh and measure one mitzvah against another based upon its perceived difficulty. Rather, Hashem wants us to fulfill all of the mitzvos wholeheartedly.

Goodbye Tappan Zee, Hello, Mario! JUST ONE DAY BEFORE it officially opened to vehicular traffic, more than 800 dignitaries, politicians, elected officials, community leaders and local residents flocked to the new Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the first of the twin spans that will replace the aging Tappan Zee Bridge. Those in attendance were transported by dozens of buses to the center of the bridge where they witnessed Governor Andrew Cuomo driving across the span in a vintage 1955 Corvette convertible. Cuomo was accompanied by 96-year-old World War II veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor Armando “Chick” Galella of Sleepy Hollow, who drove the same make and model car across the Tappan Zee Bridge when it first opened 62 years ago. Finding an operational 1955 Corvette was no small challenge, not just because of the vehicle’s age, but also because Chevrolet only made 700 of the car in that model year, reported The Journal News. Cuomo’s car was followed by school buses carrying students from the towns of Nyack and Sleepy Hollow which are adjacent to the bridge and the governor was joined by both construction workers and high schoolers as he cut the ribbon, marking the bridge’s official opening. It wasn’t until last Friday night that first cars began to make their way over the $3.9 billion bridge that took four years to construct. Rocklandbound traffic is now flowing over the new bridge, while Westchester-bound cars will continue to use the old Tappan Zee Bridge for now. Sometime this fall, all traffic will be diverted onto the new bridge so that construction crews can demolish the Tappan Zee Bridge, enabling them to complete construction of the Westchester span, slated for opening in 2018. Tolls will remain at $5 for cars or $4.75 for drivers with EZ Pass until the year 2020. Governor Cuomo has continued to dodge questions about possible future toll prices of the new bridge, which is expected to need no maintenance for 100 years. At

its completion, the twin spans will be comprised of 220 million pounds of steel and will rise 139 feet above the waters of the Hudson River, with towers that soar 419 feet into the air. There will be one holdover from the old Tappan Zee Bridge that will make its way to the new bridge: a manmade nest used by a pair of peregrine falcons that return to the bridge every winter. The nest, which is maintained by the Thruway Authority and is the focus of a “falconcam” showing the baby falcons that are born each year, will be moved to the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge at a cost of $100,000. Cuomo praised the bridge as a much-needed improvement, noting that while decades ago the state had undertaken ambitious projects including multiple bridges, Penn Station and the Empire State Building that made New York a leader in development, things had stalled in recent years. “Somewhere along the way we lost our ambition and our vision,” said Cuomo. “We lost our infrastructural chutzpah, our mojo. We became stagnant, content with what was and unable to envision what could be.” Cuomo called the new bridge a giant step forward that will not only solve problems, but will also motivate New Yorkers to “go further, to think bigger and build better.”

Shoes: A necessity, perhaps. A hobby, at times. And almost always a standard part of a person’s dress. Rare is the society that goes shoeless in today’s day and age. We humans have long worn various items to protect our feet from rubble and stubble and all things too hot or cold. But regardless of the general rule to clad our feet, styles of footwear have changed drastically throughout the ages. Let’s step back in time and take a walk through history.
EARLIEST FOOTWEAR Footwear seems to be nearly as old as the creation of man. Throughout the Chumash footwear is mentioned multiple times, such as when Moshe Rabbeinu is commanded to take off his shoes, or when the laws of yibbum v’chalitzah are expounded upon. Most types of early footwear can be divided into two categories: sandals and shoes. Sandals, of course, were most common in hot climates, while closed shoes were frequently used in chillier environments. Footwear was usually only worn outdoors in most locales, and the very poor frequently went barefoot, both indoors and out. Egyptian Sandals: In Egypt, common citizens wore sandals made from products like hemp or papyrus, while royalty wore finer versions in

leather, which were often overlaid with precious jewels and metals. Indian Sandals: The paduka is one of the oldest known types of sandals and is still worn for certain occasions in India. Instead of securing the sandal to the foot with a thong, a toe knob keeps the sole attached to the foot. Japanese Sandals: The geta has been historically used to raise wearer’s feet to avoid snow and mud. Southeastern European Shoes: The opanci were, and still are, crafted from a single sheet of leather with added straps. Thick socks or tights are worn underneath for added warmth. Opanci are a national symbol of Serbia. Native American Shoes: Moccasins are historically what the various tribes of Native Americans
wore, though that simple word doesn’t mean much, as there were various styles made, depending on tribal location and tradition. All moccasins, however, were handcrafted from leather and sinew. Some resembled sandals, while the most common was a shoe-like leather foot encasement. Moccasins could be made of plain leather or decorated with rich beading. For colder weather, rabbit fur was frequently added for warmth. Similarly, the Inuit of the arctic regions had leather and fur boots, called mukluks.

12TH–20TH CENTURY EUROPE A precursor to the modern-day pointytoed shoes we’re used to seeing was the Crakow shoe, named for the Polish city where the style was believed to have originated. The style was worn by both men and women, though men’s styles were often ridiculously long in toe. The ever-lengthening tip led to a French ban on the construction of the shoe and an English ban on toe length exceeding two inches. Historically, Europe had its share of sanitation problems. Walking the streets meant that one was always in danger of stepping deep into animal and human waste — a decidedly unpleasant aspect of being born into that era. Pattens, a type of elevated overshoes, were worn to keep

pedestrians high above ground while on the street — and were sometimes also worn indoors by those who had a fear of catching cold through contact with the chill of the floor. According to Medieval Jewish History: An Encyclopedia, The Rashba zt”l was posed with a shaila regarding the use of “patines” — which are assumed to refer to pattens — on Shabbos. The Rashba replied that it was the custom of all the wise in the land to wear them and was permitted on Shabbos. (Of course, if pattens ever come back into fashion, ask your local Orthodox rabbi!) Over in Venice the chopine was the choice to keep the wearer elevated. Over time, the height of a wearer’s chopines came to signify her social standing: the higher the shoe, the more prestigious the person. Some chopines were over 20 inches tall and lead to tragic falls. Chopine wearers often required assistance when walking.

What is believed to have started out in Persia as a way to prevent warrior’s shoes from slipping into the stirrups of their horses morphed over time to become an extremely popular style of male shoe, though seldom do our modern minds equate high heels with male wearers. King Louis XIV of France popularized this style in the 17th century by wearing them to increase his short stature of 5’4” to the slightly aboveFrench-average height of 5’9”. He also decreed that only those who belonged in his inner court could wear the heel color of red. High heels were eventually adopted by women too, and it become customary for women to wear thin heels and men, thick ones. By the 18th century, heels had fallen out of favor with men and remained solely in the realm of women’s garb, save for cowboy/riding boots.

Boots, both button-up and lace-up, were popular women’s shoes in the Victorian era (mid-1800s-early 1900s), and continued to be worn as a popular daytime choice for several more years, with ankle-high heels most common for evening wear. Though in existence from the 1600s, Oxford shoes peaked in American popularity by the early 1900s and have remained a classic ever since. Saddle shoes, a form of Oxfords, were extremely popular for both male and females between 1920-1950, especially among young people.

Though plimsolls had been around since the 1800s, these shoes were designed with neither right nor left specifications, and the Keds brand, introduced in 1916, knocked them out of popularity as the active shoe. And then Converse came along and introduced the All Star shoe, and the battle for the best sneaker began. From there, other major sneaker brands appeared, such a Nike, Adidas and Puma. Sneakers were here to stay.

With all the “new-fangled” styles we’re likely to see in local shoe shops this school and Yom Tov season, we’d be wise to remember that there is really nothing new under the sun. Fashions come and go, and everything today is but an offshoot of things that have already been. Though pretty presentations bring a certain measure of joy to the wearers’ hearts, the ikkar is that the feet are covered, safe from the surrounding elements. No matter what shoe you choose in the end, don’t forget to have in mind “sheasa li kol tzorki.” that Hashem is caring for the basic need of keeping your feet safe and sound. Style is just a bonus!

Shoe-Shopping Q&A with Dr. Harry G. Baldinger IT’S SHOE SHOPPING SEASON. So many hours, so much money and so much decision making is invested in selecting that perfect pair with the perfect fit for each child. Dr. Harry G. Baldinger, D.P.M., Monsey’s experienced and well-known podiatrist, shares his expertise with the readers of the Monsey View. What role do shoes play in the health of one’s feet, gait and overall functioning?
When does a child need an arch support, and what do these orthotics accomplish? In a normal, healthy foot, the heel and foot are perpendicular with the weightbearing surface. Look in the mirror and see if your feet are straight, or they collapse inward. Arches are used by patients who have misalignedor flat feet. This misalignment can cause foot pain, difficulty with walking, as well as a host of other issues, as the foot is not an entity onto itself — it is the foundation of the body. Many people will then opt for arches to place the foot in a correct position. They will obtain either ready or custom-made prescription arch supports depending on the severity of their conditions. Arches will make walking more com-

fortable, but they will not solve the underlying issue. They can be compared to glasses, which aid a person in seeing, but as soon as the glasses are off, the sight is as poor as it had previously been. The arch improves the gait and increases comfort, but as soon as the person isn’t wearing his arch, he’s back to square one. In addition, the ankle will continue to move, even while wearing the arch, often causing lower back pain, hip pain, knee pain or posture issues. Is there anything else that can help with my flat feet? An amazing breakthrough in the field of podiatry has enabled Dr. Baldinger to treat patients in a manner that repairs the underlying problem, instead of just addressing symptoms the problem can be permanently corrected with a minimally invasive procedure. You can restore proper alignment resolve secondary symptoms and improve overall mobility and health. This procedure can be done for children and adults, and the patient can resume walking right away, and can expect to be back to normal by six weeks. The amazing part about this procedure is that it is completely reversible, and does not change anything in the body. Heels or flats: what is better? Dr. Baldinger’s recommends to wear heels of 1 to 2 inches on a regular basis. One should aim for a little bit of height, be it a wedge or heel, on shoes. If your shoes have a wedge they will give you better support. High heels can be worn in moderation for special occasions. Correct fit and padding will make the heels more comfortable. Products and tips that will help you wear your heels right are available inour office. Wearing extremely flat shoes is not good for the foot, either. One should aim for a little bit of height on shoes. How do winter shoes and boots impact athlete’s foot? Can you share any advice for relief? Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the skin, caused by moisture.
Closed shoes and boots worn for a prolonged period of time, which cause the wearer to sweat, can encourage the growth of these infections. To minimize recurrence, spread and reinfection of fungi, here are some tips: • Apply medication as prescribed • Clean shower with bleach • Wash your feet with antibacterial soap • Always dry your feet well, especially between toes • Do not share nail tools • Wash your hands after you touch your feet • Change socks daily and dispose old socks • Dispose old shoes. At the end of each day, undo laces and leave shoes in well ventilated area In addition we have products in our office that prevent/alleviate athlete’s foot, like treatments to kill fungi and bacteria in shoes, sprays, powders antiperspirants, foot wipes and cleansers We also recommend wearing cotton or wool socks only (natural fibers) and to use waterproof boots that will keep the snow and moisture out. What if a fungus has spread to the nails? The latest on the scene for treating nail fungus is laser treatment for fungal nails. Our state-of-the-art machines offer painless treatment that is FDA approved and completely safe for anyone. All it requires is four sessions of eight minutes each under laser beams to kill the infection. Should one stay away from plastic shoe fads like Natives, Crocs, etc.? Anything that doesn’t let the air through, be it Crocs, Natives or Geox (the holes which make you feel like they’re letting the foot breathe, actually will often let the water in, making these shoes damp) is the perfect breeding ground for fungal and bacterial infections. As one perspires more with plastic footwear, and the moisture has no escape, not only may they cause the above infections, but they will often cause dry skin and other issues. This type of footgear is appropriate

Is there anything else people should look out for when buying shoes? • Take your child shoe shopping. Every shoe fits differently. Letting a kid have a say in the shoe buying process promotes healthy foot habits down the road. • Always measure a child’s feet before buying shoes and watch for signs of irritation. Pay attention to proper length, width and depth when fitting your child’s shoes. Poorly fitting children’s shoes can cause toe problems, ingrown toenails, hammer toes, calluses and bunions. • Buy shoes that don’t need a “break-in” period. Shoes should be comfortable immediately. They should be tried with the socks or tights the child will wear with the shoes. • Always buy for the larger foot. Feet are seldom precisely the same size. • Shoes with laces always give better support. • Never hand down footwear. Just because a shoe fits one child comfortably it doesn’t mean it’ll fit another the same way. Sharing shoes can also spread fungi like athlete’s foot and nail fungus. • Shoe and sock sizes may change every few months as a child’s feet grows. Look out for discomfort. • If you’re finding that no shoe is good for your child, it very well may be that the shoe isn’t the problem, your child’s foot may be. If your child’s shoes always gaps, good fit is difficult, or the heels wear out unevenly, especially at the inner side, it’s time to see a podiatrist and give your child the gift of a good gait. Step 1 TIPS 1. Tying your own shoe lace is a skill that is generally acquired between the ages of five and seven. 2. Parent and child should sit side by side so that the child has the same perspective. Whatever the child is told to do should be preceded by the parents doing that very action. 3. The back of the shoe should be facing the parent and the child, in the exact same position as it would be if someone is wearing the shoe and bending down to tie it. 4. It’s a good idea to practice tying laces with two different colored laces. 5. Remember! Tying shoelaces takes lots of practice. Be patient with the child and they will catch on.
Pull both laces upward, creating even parallel lines like train tracks.
Step 2
Cross the tips of the laces into an “x.”
Step 3
Tuck one of the tips under the opening or point of intersection.
Brought to you by Weingarten Quality Shoes. Your one-stopshop for quality shoes and laces! 845.425.0899 Shoppers Haven | 27 Orchard St.
Step 4
Step 7
Pull the two tips in opposite directions.
Create an “x” using both bunny ears.
You have just tied a knot.
Step 5
Step 8
Choose one of the laces and fold it in ½, creating a bunny ear (loop). You can hold the “ear” with your thumb and index finger.
Take the top end of one bunny ear and tuck it beneath the point of intersection until you see the “ear” peeking out of the opening. (Explain how one of the bunnies ran around the tree. When he saw a dog, he jumped into the hole to safety on the opposite side.)
Step 6
Step 9
Create a second bunny ear (loop) with the other lace.
Pull the two tips in opposite directions. August 30, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 145 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

KNOW YOUR LINGO: CORDWAINER: one who makes shoes COBBLER: one who mends shoes
ONCE UPON A SHOE…
• Up until the 19th century shoes were made by hand. • Until around 1870 the majority of shoes were made to be neither left or right; both sides were crafted the same! • After WWII gluing soles to shoes became the norm, rather than tedious sewing. • George Washington’s troops received the first shipment of factory-produced shoes. They were very uncomfortable, and cobblers had to modify them to make them wearable. • Once factory production of the soldiers’ shoes was perfected, the South wanted to get a taste of the goods. It was common after a battle to find downed Union soldiers without their boots, which were pilfered by Confederates. • Jan Matzeliger, an African man who moved to America, revolutionized the way shoes were produced. By inventing a machine that streamlined production, factories went from producing roughly 50 pairs of shoes a day to 750 pairs of shoes a day!
158 / THE MONSEY VIEW
• Lynn, Massachusetts became the shoe production capital of the world for a while, home to 234 factories that made over a million pairs per day! • The Great Depression brought the American shoemaking industry to its knees. Nowadays, 99% of shoe production is done overseas.
THE FUTURE OF FOOTWEAR
• Nike released self-lacing sneakers in 2016 that are battery operated. When you place your foot inside, the sneaker tightens to conform to your foot. No bending and tying required. • Adidas is working on a shoe called the Futurecraft, that has a sole constructed through 3D printing. The sole is completely bendable, making for a very comfortable fit. • Shiftwear sneakers are able to change their outer design with the push of a
button, allowing various patterns to be displayed at the wearer’s whim. • GPS Smart Insoles are perfect for people who have the tendency to wander off, leaving their caretakers wondering where they’ve been. With these insoles, you’ll always know where the person you seek has gone! • Lundi boots include a heating element that keeps your toes toasty warm even in freezing weather. You can control the temp inside the boot to suit your needs.
FUN FACTS
• The world’s largest shoe store is in Dubai and is 96,000 square feet. • The largest shoe floor in a department store is the flagship Macy’s shoe department, featuring 43,000 square feet, 400 workers and 280,000 pairs of shoes. • In developing regions, car tires are often used to make soles for shoes. • A “sneakerhead” is one who collects limited
edition or rare sneakers, often to resell them at inflated prices. • Think you’ve got a shoe addiction? Egyptian royalty were often buried with their shoe collections! • Neil Armstrong’s moon-landing boots are floating around somewhere in space, but would be priceless if found and auctioned off! • According to a poll, the average woman owns 19 pairs of shoes, though she only wears four of them.

40 Days until 24th Tishrei (Yartzeit of the holy Ribnitz Rebbe)
The Ribnitz Rebbe Took Care of Me “I’d like to share with you the reason why I chose a Tehillim Kollel membership at the Tzion of the Ribnitz Rebbe. When I was a young boy, I was born into a beautiful family, filled with Talmidei Chachamim. My fathers, my brothers, they all excelled at their learning. But I was different. I tried really hard but I could never be like them. I wasn’t born with the same talents. My father was always disappointed in me. During the years of my struggle, I frequently visited the Ribnitz Rebbe and poured out my heart and all my pain. The Rebbe was always warm and encouraging, and by the end of the visit, I felt uplifted and comforted. My father never knew about these times.” “Later on, I went to learn in Eretz Yisroel and I continued to maintain a personal connection with the Ribnitz Rebbe. I was very saddened by his Petirah, feeling like I lost a person who truly cared about me.” “One day, my father called me and asked, “You know the Ribnitz Rebbe?” I was so surprised. I asked, “Why, how do you know?” He shared with me that an old friend from his yeshiva days, who he hadn’t seen in 20 years, called him up, with regards for me from the Ribnitz Rebbe. This friend had a dream in which the Ribnitz Rebbe told him, “Call up your friend Avraham and tell him that his son Shmuel is going to be okay. He is a good boy and he will see a lot of nachas from him.” “My father is Avraham. I am Shmuel. The Ribnitz Rebbe continued to take care of me and look out for me, after his Petira! And that’s why I chose a membership at his Tzion. I am sharing this story so that others know. If you develop a connection with the Rebbe, if you daven at his Kever or send messengers to daven for you through Tehillim Kollel, he will take care of you too.”

THIS WEEK we’re having a
FAMILY GATHERING IN A BUNGALOW COLONY
Summer residents in a bungalow colony don’t really have much room for indoor partying, so we moved this breakfast outdoors for a low-key, yet very tasteful affair.
164 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 30, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
TA B L E S E T T I N G S
We want a mix of color — but not too much color. Therefore, we use a prettier print at the sit-down tables where guests will spend more time, and solids at the buffet.
Since bungalow colony landscaping generally doesn’t provide for very flat surfaces, we choose small, round tables that’ll guarantee stability on a rocky ground. Tabletop surface is limited here, so we keep it simple: A small bouquet at the center, and juice glass and folded napkin at each place setting. White phoenix chairs round out the “straight out of a breakfast nook” scene.
To bring some height to the buffet we intersperse tall vases and towering flower arrangements with the food stations. While we generally don’t use candles when there’s so much sunshine overhead, this table could use another “something.” A small candle fills just that role!

We can’t have a breakfast without java and juice, can we? To up the ante, we put out iced coffee, and a variety of tea too! These small, charming pitchers of milk are a nice replacement for plastic cartons.
What’s summer without refreshing drinks? Glass dispensers showcase a choice of quince and pineapple; lemon and lime; and grapefruit juice. These charming lanterns bring alternating heights into the picture for a more complete look.

FOOD COURT
Lined up in square dishes for easy access, olives, cheese, fried onions, peppers, and mushrooms create a wide variety of addons for personalized, morning omelets.
To display the cheese miniatures neatly and attractively, we put them onto cake plates with pedestals, and place each one in its own cubicle within the shelving units.
Messy drips and spills are neatly avoided by use of individual glasses to display fish and vegetable salads. This arrangement also allows for each salad type to get its own space within the display for easy viewing.
At the bread table, we offer pretzels, mini baguettes, bagels and more for pas Shacharis. Elegantly displayed cream cheese and butter stand at the ready too, along with a knife and cutting boards. Rice cakes, melba toast and crackers have their own spot on this wood and metal double-decker display.
We pile a cutting board atop a wooden bowl for height to display sliced salmon. Edible flowers work to bring some color to the table. OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY PLANNED AND EXECUTED HUNDREDS OF ORIGINAL EVENTS IN A MYRIAD OF THEMES. WHILE EACH WAS DIFFERENT AND TOTALLY FRESH, THEY WERE ALIKE IN THEIR AUTHENTICITY OF THEIR HOST’S DISTINCTIVE EXPRESSION. WE PLEDGE TO COLLABORATE WITH YOU AND REALIZE YOUR DREAM EVENT WHILE RESPECTING YOUR BUDGETARY APPETITE.

Days to Serenity
HI EVERYBODY! No way! It’s school season. Like seriously. Did summer even happen?! The days leading to the start of school are always hectic. Uniforms, school supplies, kids coming home from camp and shoe shopping. Funny how something so joyous can turn into such a hassle with three toddlers (they all seem like toddlers when going shopping, no?) hanging off the carriage. The store is so crowded I can’t even get my daughter’s foot into the shoe without stepping on someone else’s foot, only to realize that I said “I’m sorry” to a shoe. The magic starts when your number is announced after 112 minutes of waiting time. By that time all the snacks that you bought along are gone and you’re starting to worry that all the shoes in the store are gone as well. You pay and see the total, and in a moment of clarity, you know for a fact that there were lots of shoes left for you. And the magic ends. But it’s always cute how your kids check the shoes every few minutes after you get home and show them off to all their neighbors. That lasts about four days into the school year. With supplies as well. Your child’s briefcase with the fresh supplies will look like this for exactly a day and a half after school starts. Take a minute every day to check her folder and spill out any crumbs from the briefcase. Rearrange her pencil case next. It also makes you see what she has a surplus of and what she needs. It literally takes a minute. I also love doing this because I always find treasures that I hadn’t even known existed. Laffy Taffy wrapper? Umm, not from me. Must have exchanged her chocolate chip cookies for this. Sugar always wins. Hello Kitty eraser? Traded for her special white eraser that the school insisted on ‘cause it erases the best!

Of course I never find money or anything remotely close to that but sometimes you find notes that do ask for money, that your daughter forgot to hand over, so yeah. Treasures. Take each day and do one thing to make getting back to school less of a last-minute hassle. THURSDAY, AUGUST 31: Most schools are starting this coming Wednesday. Keep everyone calm next week by making today “Let’s be done with school supplies shopping” day. I know lots of you did your shopping early on, but check your lists and make sure all the seforim and last-minute things are also crossed off. Tissue box? Taps on shoes? FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1: Make a pile of all the supplies. Open the packages of looseleaf paper and pens, dividers, etc.

Put each in its rightful place. Check that you have brown lunch bags and Ziploc bags for your children’s snacks. And labels with which to label the supplies. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 3: Don’t get me started about today! I know I’ll meet you all on this day at some point in some store. Be calm and focus on what you need for now. Your seven-year-old son does not need a new suit for the first day of cheder even if he insists that everyone wears one. That’s for Rosh Hashanah. So maybe you can wait with yom tov shopping. This should’ve started a week ago, but it’s never too late to go to sleep early. Give the kids the gift of a good schedule. Get them into bed on time. School begins almost two hours earlier than day camp! MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4: Collapse on your couch and do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Oh, so sorry, I’m a few days ahead. School hasn’t started yet. Okay, so how about you do that anyway? Sit and relax for just a couple of hours. Play with your kids and remember that summer just started. Relish a few more moments before homework becomes the routine. But so sorry to be a killjoy. Just make sure bus passes and any signed papers that your kids need for school are ready. Book fee, G.O. fee, etc... TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5: The following applies for each night of the school year: Lay out the uniform and shoes. The tights and headband, too. Prepare snacks the night before. Prepare the briefcase and a bag for all the supplies that did not fit into the briefcase. Ready to go! Here’s to standing at the bus stop 7:54 in the morning with your cameras ready! ACROSS
They say Yeshivas Beis-El is completely transformed. Rav Gedalia appointed a brilliant successor!
We’ll go to Yerushalayim for Sukkos this year, Im Yirtzeh Hashem. We’ll get a bracha from the Rosh Yeshiva and give him a generous donation.
And so a month later, the rich man’s family set out on their journey.
They arrived in Yerushalayim on Erev Sukkos.

• INTEREST RATE: Same scenario as above, except one has a 620 credit score and one has a 750 credit score. The lower credit score mortgage interest rate will be higher, as much as 1% higher!
Real Estate The Right Fit This may come as a surprise, but I used to work in a local shoe store on Main Street. I learned to handle all different ages and personalities. I learned how to fit shoes; on babies, children and adults. It was quite an experience. Today I do almost the same thing. Just like every pair of shoes will fit differently, and there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to footwear, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to home buying and home financing. What makes it different? Why can’t it be turnkey? Why can’t it be stressless, like picking up groceries or simple, like shopping at a store or seamless and quick, like applying for a credit card? There are numerous components to the purchase of a home. The buyer has to find the home. The home has to suit their needs. One person needs a large backyard, another needs an in-law suite. Someone else needs a wide driveway and another needs to have five bedrooms.. and the lists can go on. And then there is the financing... Here are some examples of seemingly small things that can make a huge difference in one person qualifying for a loan versus another person. • CREDIT SCORE: Two families, same income, same down payment, same hair color, same shoe size and same style home on the same street. One person has a 620 credit score and one person scores at 619. The 620 score is eligible for a loan and the 619 is not.

Why can’t it be stressless, like picking up groceries or simple, like shopping at a store or seamless and quick, like applying for a credit card?
• HOUSE PRICE: One person is buying a home on one street and the next person is buying a home on the next street. Both homes are similar in style, the neighborhood is the basically the same, but there is a $50,000 difference in price. Why? Some possible reasons: The homes are in different school districts, and one district may have a higher tax rate or may be more desirable and the house price reflects this. Or one home falls into a flood zone and the insurance is high, so it is less desirable than the other home, which is not in a flood zone. • HOUSE CONDITION: Two homes are next to each other. One home is well-kept, but it doesn’t have central AC and the home is dated, with the original flooring, kitchen and bathrooms. The roof is old, but not leaking, the boiler and exterior siding and windows are original. The house next door is completely upgraded, with a new kitchen and bathrooms, new win-
dows and siding, and new HVAC. The dated home sold and the other is now under contract. The fixed-up home price is $75,000 more, but the appraiser is saying the value is less, and he is using the dated home as the basis for the lower value. So even though one home is clearly worth more and it would take more than $75,000 more to fix up the other one, the market value approach may not substantiate the value, and the deal can then fall apart. • REVERSE FLOOR PLAN: Imagine if two families find their dream homes. One is beautifully done. It is a twostory home with the kitchen and living area on the walkin level and the bedrooms upstairs. The other home is the opposite, with the living area on one level and a finished basement on the lower level. Both lower levels are partially below ground level, with full size windows and walk-in doors. They have the same square footage and are selling for the same price. One can get a mortgage and one cannot, because when the kitchen is “below grade,” even partially so, it is considered a basement and a reverse floor plan, and only if the appraiser can find other homes built like this can the loan be mortgageable. I can go on, but the point is clear: Just like when purchasing shoes it is best to go to an expert who will fit one’s foot to perfection so that the shoe is comfortable and one foot doesn’t develop any uncomfortable conditions, so too when purchasing a home. It is so important to surround oneself with the right experts to facilitate and expedite what is the most likely the single largest purchase of one’s lifetime.
