COOKING MONSEY GLATT
Succulent Italian Brisket
Ingredients • 1 beef brisket, about 5 pounds • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 large carrot, cut in 1/4-inch dice • 2 sticks celery, cut in 1/4-inch dice • 1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 sprig fresh rosemary • 1 cup canned crushed tomatoes • 2 bay leaf • 1 bottle red wine • 1-1/2 cups chicken stock • Garnish: parsley, chopped
Directions Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Trim the brisket of most of its fat and season with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large Dutch Oven and sear the brisket on both sides. Remove the brisket from the pan. Add the diced carrots, celery, onion and garlic. Saute for about 5 minutes over medium heat or until onion is translucent. Add the rosemary, tomatoes and bay leaves and return brisket to the pan. Completely cover the meat with the wine, adding chicken stock if necessary so that the meat is covered. Cover the pan and bake in the oven for 3 to 3 and 1/2 hours or until the meat is fork-tender. If the liquid reduces by more than half during cooking, add a small amount of chicken stock. Transfer the meat to a dish and keep warm. Remove the herbs and puree the liquid in a blender or with a hand held immersion blender until smooth. If the sauce is a little thin, return it to the heat and reduce over medium-high heat until it reaches the desired consistency. Slice the brisket and arrange it on a deep platter with the sauce. Garnish with chopped parsley.
Have some left over brisket? Pull it apart with two forks and throw it on top of a salad to add that extra flavor and texture.

A TIMELY REMINDER This is a reminder and a request. When visiting any public place on Chol Hamoed, please be careful to throw all food wrappers and empty containers in the garbage. If you want to go the extra step, please pick up from the ground any obviously Yiddishe garbage that isn’t yours. Let’s make a kiddush Hashem wherever we go. A Fellow Monsey Resident
A NOTE ABOUT NJ PARKS There’s been talk in the inbox about local New Jersey parks not wanting non-residents to visit. When I was last at Finch Park, I saw a sign about it, so I called up the offices of Ramsey Borough to inquire about their regulations. I was told that it’s okay with them if individuals come, but once it’s a group, a permit would be needed. Ramsey Borough: 201-825-3400 A Park-Goer
SHHH, IT’S A SECRET In my family, I’m known as the keeper of secrets. Whether its news of a new job/outfit/sheitel/house/engagement, if you ask me to keep the secret, I will. Naturally, the members of the family who did not ask me to keep that particular secret sometimes press me to divulge the information I know, which I absolutely, positively will not do. But that causes strife. After all, if child A told me, perhaps child A also told child D or G? So why can’t I tell child E if it probably is not such a huge secret after all? However, my lips remain sealed, and there’s no point in asking me if there even is a secret, because I won’t discuss that either. And I have a particularly bland face, so there’s no use scrutinizing my expression.

Being the mother of a pair of very active and fun-loving boys, I wanted to ask all of you as you dismantle your sukkahs to please keep your ladders and tools in an inaccessible place when you’re not there supervising. There’s nothing more thrilling for wannabe sukkah builders than finding items of their fascination unattended and up for their taking. I’ve already found my little ones perched atop ladders and trying to operate someone’s electric saw! I’m sure there are plenty of boys throughout Monsey who have similar tendencies, and all they need is two minutes when their mother’s head is turned. May Hashem watch over us all. A Mother
MY PHONE DOESN’T STOP RINGING
שבת בראשית מוצאי שבת
And now I have a favor to ask from whoever it is that is asking me to keep their secrets. At some point, you, dear secret-holder, will decide the world (or your family) is allowed to be in on the secret. And you’ll let the cat out of the bag. But you’ll only let the cat out to people with whom you feel like sharing. Or to people you’re sure would never know about the secret even though I’ve (so you think) already leaked the secret to the world (or your family). Then I’m stuck. I hear people talking about your secret, the secret I’m still keeping, but since you haven’t told me that I can let my cat escape, I’m still keeping mum while everyone around me is talking about your secret. So do I pretend the secret is still secret, or would it be okay for me to tell everyone that you told me the secret long ago, and that I was quiet about it to encourage others to confidently confide in me? Would it be preferable for me to pretend that I just found out and that it’s news to me, too? In other words, don’t play with my head. I’ll keep your secret for as long as you’d like me to, but when you’re ready to spill the beans, please spill one near me so I’ll know the secret is no longer a secret. Secretly, R.S.
It was a while ago that I put my number on the Do Not Call list, as I was being kept busy at every inopportune time speaking to telemarketers. The newest trend of heimishe telemarketing, while their causes are commendable and I’d love to contribute to each one, is literally robbing me of my phone. Erev yom tov is busy enough, without having to keep running to a phone that doesn’t stop ringing! And when I’m taking care of important matters on the phone, I can barely carry a five-minute conversation without pausing countless times for beeps — or needing to repeat myself. Would anyone know if there’s a Do Not Call list for these types of calls? I.R. THE CAR WAS A MESS, and it wasn’t even Pesach cleaning time! After pushing it off over and over again, my husband finally decided the time had come to clean the car. He went through each section, filling up many shopping bags with the garbage. Then he came to the trunk and found a piece of paper with a name and date on it. He scanned it, wondering what it was all about. Then, he remembered having spoken to a cousin who had mentioned the name of this relative, whose name was on the paper, who had passed away without leaving any children behind. Since my husband does not have a father, he thought he would say kaddish for this man on his yartzeit. He asked for the date the man was nifter and wrote it on the paper along with his full Jewish name. Somehow, the paper ended up in the car and my husband forgot all about it. Now that he held the paper in his hands, he remembered the conversation and his good intentions. He started to feel bad about having forgotten about it, until he realized that day was the actual yartzeit of the man.

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:
EDITION CHAPTER 7
By: Basya Kovacs
84 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
ONE OF THE ISSUES we struggle with at Nutrition by Tanya is how much personal information to reveal and how much to conceal. Clients often ask me: What do you eat for breakfast? What do you serve your kids? Were you ever overweight? How much do you weigh? Do you ever cheat? Questions like these are part of our interactions with our clients, and we struggle to balance transparency with privacy. On the one hand, the questions are valid. The client’s mindset is most likely, “If you are going to tell me what to eat and when to eat it, I want to make sure that you truly believe that this program works and that you do it as well.” Also, when the nutrition counselor looks thin and healthy, he or she becomes somewhat of a role model for the client to emulate, hence the slew of questions. On the other hand, there is the privacy factor. Thankfully we are a thriving company with hundreds of clients. Do I really want thousands of people knowing my exact weight? Or that I was overweight in high school? (I was! So now you know ;)) And what if I mess up? Do I lie to my clients to keep the facade of perfection and continue role-modeling great habits? Or do I tell them the honest truth — that we are all human and mess up from time to time — running the risk of giving the client permission to mess up as well? So we try to strike a balance, each of us coming up with the most comfortable for ourselves. Personally, I have one ironclad rule: I never tell clients my weight. I believe that my weight is personal, and I actually feel that no matter how curious someone is about my personal life, it is pushing the boundaries to even ask me what my weight is. There are other questions that I very willingly answer and don’t feel to be a breach of privacy for me. Here are a
few: Do you actually eat this way? Yes! I stick to the structure and guidelines that I provide for my clients 99% of the time. If I “cheat,” it is because I am on a maintenance plan and am allowed a bit of leeway. So if you see me eating a chocolate bar, rest assured that it is just a small amount of chocolate in the context of very disciplined eating habits the rest of the time. Were you ever fat? Besides the fact that I don’t like using the word fat, I don’t really have a good answer for this because everyone has a different idea of what fat means. So my answer to this question is that I lost approximately 30 pounds from my highest weight (which was in high school), and that I lost it slowly over a number of years. Do you feed your kids this way? No. Not at all. I keep to a few basic guidelines with my children. Such as the fact that I don’t fry food for dinner (an easy one because by the time I get home, sticking some cutlets or beef into the oven and broiling it is much simpler than standing over the frying pan.) But even if I had all the time in the world I wouldn’t fry my children’s dinner. Another basic guideline that I stick to is that I don’t serve starches such as breads, wraps or crackers for dinner. I usually serve brown rice or pasta, or I skip the starch completely, because my belief is that my children have loaded up on enough carbs (pretzels! cookies!) throughout the day. Fussing with cooking up a starch as a side dish often just doesn’t make any sense nutritionally. A third rule of thumb is that I limit my children’s junk food such as sugary cereals and candy to moderate amounts and only on special occasions such as Shabbos and Yom Tov. So yes, that was me you saw in the grocery store sneaking Oodles into my cart to
keep my kids quiet during shofar blowing. Other than these basic guidelines, I am pretty “normal” about what I serve my children. The last thing I need is my children resenting healthy eating. I prefer they learn to appreciate healthy eating through osmosis by observing my own and my husband’s decent eating habits and hopefully developing an appreciation for it as they get older. Speaking of my husband… Does your husband eat this way? Sort of. My husband is one of those rare breeds who eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. He actually enjoys lean proteins and vegetables, and doesn’t like the bloated, stuffed-up feeling of filling up on challah, kugels and starchy side dishes. He would never skip a meal and would never eat it without sitting down, using a plate, and adding some vegetables. (Yes! These people really exist, although I don’t know very many and I am certainly not one of them.) This type of eating comes naturally to him, and isn’t something he works hard at. In a way, he is my role model for what balanced, moderate, organized eating should look like, but on the other hand, unlike me and most of my clients, the fact that it isn’t a struggle for him takes away his role-model status to some degree. These are just some of the questions I answer on an almost daily basis because I feel that I can answer them candidly without feeling overexposed. Got any personal questions for me? Submit to The Monsey View, and I just might answer them!

Whether we live in large homes or small apartments, dwelling in a sukkah reminds us that this world is but a corridor to Olam Haba.
AVIGAYIL STEPPED OUT into the cold night air and pushed the sliding door shut behind her. It was just a few steps across the deck to where her family’s sukkah stood, in the only corner not shadowed by trees. Avigayil stepped into the sukkah, put down the stack of dishes she had been carrying, and stopped to look around before setting the table. It wouldn’t hurt to take just a few moments to enjoy the peaceful solitude of the sukkah before her married children and her eineklach would begin to trickle in. A waterproof light fixture was shining brightly overhead, and an indoor-outdoor carpet insulated the floor below. The walls were beautifully decorated, and her husband’s bed sat discreetly off to the side. As a gentle breeze rustled the s’chach, Avigayil reflected: Preparing the sukkah was a lot of work, but our only job now is to enjoy what we have prepared, together with our family and the Ushpizin! The Vilna Gaon writes that all the events of the month of Tishrei are a hint to Olam Haba. (Even Shleimah, chapter 11) First, there is Rosh Hashanah — the Yom Hadin — which hints to the Yom Hadin Hagadol. After Rosh Hashanah, there is Yom Kippur, which hints to the forgiveness of sin, as it says, “Vezorakti aleichem mayim tehorim ut’hartem… — I will sprinkle pure water upon you, and you will be pure…” (Yechezkel 36:25) and, “Ki eslach la’asher ashir. — I will forgive those I leave over.” (Yirmiyahu 50:20)
92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
After Yom Kippur comes Sukkos — a hint to the geulah, as it is written, “and a sukkah will be for shade from the day” (Yeshayahu 4:6), “the time of our rejoicing,” (Yeshayahu 61:7), and “strangers will stand and shepherd your sheep” (Yeshayahu 61:5). In the sukkah, we bring the four minim together, just as Klal Yisroel will come together from the four corners of the earth. In the sukkah, we will be reunited with the Avos and the other Ushpizin, just as after techias hameisim. R’ Shamshon Raphael Hirsch brings a further example of the connection between Sukkos and the geulah. He cites Zechariah 14:16, which states, “V’hayah kal hanosar mikal hagoyim… — And it will be that everyone left of the nations who came up against Yerushalayim will go up from year to year to prostrate themselves to the Melech, Hashem Tzva’os, and to celebrate the festival of Sukkos.” The Torah tells us, “Shivas yamim tachog… v’hayisa ach samayach. — For seven days you will celebrate the
chag… and you will only be happy.” (Devarim 16:15) Rashi comments that the statement “you will only be happy” is not a commandment, but rather a promise. Hashem is assuring us that we will be joyous during Sukkos, which hints at the joy we will experience at the geulah. Whether we live in large homes or small apartments, dwelling in a sukkah reminds us that this world is but a corridor to Olam Haba. Our lives are fleeting, yet we accumulate so much baggage, both physical and emotional. We amass countless possessions, yet we never stop craving more. How much of what we own has any lasting value beyond this life? That leather sofa you insisted on buying for your living room has little true value (if any), but once you schlep that couch into the sukkah, it suddenly becomes a priceless treasure. What a hiddur mitzvah! Dwelling in the sukkah, you are surrounded by the mitzvah — you are living in the mitzvah. As the candles died down in the sukkah and the dessert spoons clanged in bowls of ice cream, Avigayil sat quietly off to the side, taking it all in: the singing, the divrei Torah, her children’s laughter when recalling the chagim of yesteryear, the pure smiles of the eineklach. Avigayil’s heart swelled with the indescribable joy of completeness. Sitting in her sukkah, she had left everything behind — and yet, she had everything she needed.

2014 Effort to Split Ramapo into Wards Nixed on Appeal A PLAN TO MINIMIZE the power of the Jewish vote in Ramapo has been defeated by an appeals court, which ruled that allegations of irregularities in voting and misconduct by the Town of Ramapo were unfounded. A 2014 referendum had Ramapo voters casting their ballots on whether or not to divide the town up into six separate wards, a process that would have watered down the Jewish vote. According to The Journal News, supporters of the ward plan said it was deliberately designed to offset the growing voice of Ramapo’s Orthodox Jewish community. While early returns seemed to indicate that the ward plan had been approved by a margin of 541 votes, close
to 2,000 affidavit ballots cast by unregistered voters flipped the results, with the ward plan voted down by 894 votes. The Town of Ramapo’s decision to invoke a rarely used law allowing unregistered voters to cast their ballots in the election became a source of controversy, as supporters of the ward system said that it created confusion and was engineered to defeat the ward concept. Supporters of the ward system said that they hope to be granted permission to bring an appeal to the state’s highest court in order to have the latest decision reversed.
Westchester-Bound Thruway Traffic Moving to New Bridge Earlier Than Expected JUST WEEKS AFTER the first cars crossed the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge as they traveled west to Rockland County, word comes that traffic headed in the opposite direction will be diverted to the new bridge weeks ahead of schedule, on October 6th. Currently, only four lanes of the eight-lane bridge are being utilized by Rockland County–bound traffic, while drivers headed east have remained on the Tappan Zee Bridge. According to the Thruway Authority, once the switch is made, all cars headed to Westchester will be routed onto the new bridge, making use of the four extra lanes that have remained empty until now. A concrete barrier will be used to separate eastbound and westbound traffic.
The move will allow the next phase of the bridge project to continue — demolishing the Tappan Zee Bridge. Once the bridge has been removed, construction crews will finally be able to complete the eastern span of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, which will consist of two separate bridges when it is finally completed in 2018. Governor Andrew Cuomo estimated that 50 million cars crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge in 2016. In addition to having extra-wide lanes, safety shoulders and lanes for emergency vehicles, the new bridge will also have viewing areas and a bicycle and walking path. Tolls on the new bridge will be frozen at the current rate until the year 2020, with no further information available on any potential toll hikes after that time.
Improve59’s Rosh Hashanah Initiative Stresses Safety for Both Drivers and Pedestrians THE SAFETY OF ONE of Monsey’s busiest roadways took center stage at a recently held event that took place in the Town Square Mall. Children who took part in Improve59’s Safety Awareness Day, held on September 17th, had the opportunity to learn about safety through colorful posters and coloring sheets, while adults had the opportunity to view a proposed plan to widen Route 59, synchronize traffic

lights, improve sidewalks and encourage safe crossing throughout the busy area. Improve59 was launched earlier this year to enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists who travel the busy Route 59 corridor. In addition to kicking off the new year with the Town Square event, Improve59 is planning additional initiatives in the near future to continue furthering its goal of improved safety for all.

TEA-ENHANCED APPLESAUCE By: Draizy Wercberger Enjoy the delicious aroma filling your house while this compote, which is really simply a twist on regular applesauce, is bubbling on the stove. Being extremely diet-friendly, it’s great on its own, but to elevate it to a festive dessert, serve the applesauce warm in a dessert glass and top with a scoop of vanilla-caramel ice cream. This applesauce freezes very well.
INGREDIENTS: 20 cooking apples, peeled and chunked ½ cup sugar or splenda 6 fruit-flavored tea bags
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place apples and sugar or splenda in a large pot. Tie a knot with the strings of the 6 tea bags and tear off any paper attached to them. Add to the pot. Fill the pot halfway with water; do not cover all the apples. 2. Cook on medium flame for about 1 hour, using a potato masher to mush the apples every few minutes. Remove the tea bags when applesauce is done. Can be served warm or cold.

MARINATED PEARS By: Malky Tauber Once I tasted these delicious pears from my sister-in-law’s kitchen, they became my favorite dessert. Classy and lighter than most desserts, they are a perfect ending to a meal.
INGREDIENTS: 12 pears 1 c. sugar ½ c. honey 1 vanilla sugar 1 lemon, squeezed 20 oz. cranberries 3 apple-cranberry tea bags
DIRECTIONS: 1. In a saucepan, line peeled pears upright, tightly packed. Add enough water to cover. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients except for the tea bags. Boil. Reduce heat and let cook 45 minutes. 3. Shut the flame and add tea bag for 5 minutes. Remove, cool and refrigerate. 4. Serve with sauce and cranberries. Freezes well.
Seasoned Chef: The liquid makes for a delicious drink, served warm or chilled.

PEAR AND APPLE COMPOTE By: Leah Stern For many years, I had the zechuya to host my grandparents for Rosh Hashanah. My grandmother would always bring compote. Hers was a delicious dessert, and no matter how hard I tried, I could never replicate its unique flavor. Whenever I’d ask for the recipe, she’d say, “Oh, it’s just regular compote.” When I finally explained that she must be cooking “regular compote” differently than I did, she taught me this method.
INGREDIENTS: 8 ripe pears (Bartlett or D’anjou) 12 large Cortland apples 1¼ cups sugar 2 T. vanilla sugar
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place thinly sliced pears and sugar in a 10-quart pot. 2. Cook on a low flame. Meanwhile, peel, core and slice apples. 3. Add apples to pot, only after sugar has dissolved and pears have begun cooking. 4. Add four cups of water, along with the vanilla sugar. 5. Simmer over low flame for two hours.

INGREDIENTS: 4 packages frozen strawberries, defrosted 4 cans crushed pineapples 2 pkgs. raspberry jello Shot of strawberry Daiquiri (optional) Arils of two pomegranates
DIRECTIONS: 1. Blend defrosted strawberries and pineapple. 2. Dissolve jello in a cup water at room temperature, and then mix into the blended fruit. 3. Add a shot of Daiquiri. 4. Deseed pomegranates and stir arils into mixture, or spoon on top for a more elegant look. Serve chilled.

What is a sleep center?
CliCk itdesign 845.445.9646
A sleep center is a medical facility dedicated to diagnosing and treating patients with sleep related problems. Rockland Sleep Center offers the most recent advanced technology in sleep diagnosis and treatments to improve sleep health. We are affiliated with board certified top specialists in the field of sleep medicine who excel in patient care. Approximately 70 million people in the United States suffer from sleep problems, and more than half have a chronic sleep disorder. There are more than 100 types of sleep disorders, which means it’s important to get a proper diagnosis with individualized treatment. Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep each day. You know you’re getting enough sleep if you feel refreshed when you awaken and remain alert throughout the day. If you consistently have trouble sleeping or are very sleepy while you are awake, you may need a professional evaluation to determine if you have a sleep disorder.
Answer these questions to see if you may have a sleep problem. • Do you feel sleepy during the day even after a good night’s sleep? • Do you often wake up at night and have trouble falling back to sleep? • Have you been told you snore loudly? • Have you been told or suspect you stop breathing while asleep? • Do you have morning headaches? • Do you toss and turn all night? • Do you suffer from high blood pressure? • Have you fallen asleep at inappropriate times, such as while driving? If you answered yes to one or more of the preceding questions you may have a sleeping problem. While this questionnaire isn’t a substitute for a professional diagnosis, it can help you determine whether or not to seek a professional opinion.
What is a sleep evaluation? Obstructive Sleep Apnea Left Untreated
Understanding Sleep Apnea Snoring is often more than just annoying. It may be a symptom of a more serious sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. However, not all people with sleep apnea snore. Usually when you sleep, the muscles that control the upper airway relax; this is normal. However, if they relax too much, the airway narrows and you snore. The muscles can relax even further causing a blockage of the airway and you actually stop breathing. This is called “Obstructive Sleep Apnea” (OSA). Other factors can cause this as well. An enlarged uvula or swollen tonsils, a nasal obstruction or certain facial attributes can also cause OSA. Each episode can last ten seconds or more and has been known to happen hundreds of times a night; disrupting your sleep without you even being aware that it’s happening. Sleep apnea is often associated with excessive daytime sleepiness because your rest is regularly disturbed. However, you may not have
In addition to affecting your overall quality of life, Obstructive Sleep Apnea can cause serious health risks.

symptoms and still have apnea.
We’re here to help!
Regain control of your life through proper diagnosis and treatment. Our goal is to help you achieve restful, regenerative sleep!
A sleep Evaluation is painless. Each patient completes a questionnaire about their sleep problems. An extensive consultation appointment with a board certified sleep specialist then focuses on your history and symptoms of sleep problems. During this appointment the sleep specialist may determine you require an overnight sleep study.
How will my sleep study be monitored? The sleep rooms at Rockland Sleep Center are private rooms with private bathrooms and showers. The rooms are furnished with full size beds, recliners and cable television. A variety of electrodes and monitoring devices are connected to you during the sleep test. While asleep, our registered technologist monitor your brain wave activity, muscle activity, blood oxygen levels, airflow from your nose and mouth, and your chest and abdomen effort of breathing. After your testing is complete, a technologist will perform an analysis of your recording. The physician will then interpret your test. Once a diagnosis has been made, your options will be explained to you. Together, we determine the most effective treatment for your particular sleep disorder. The most common treatment today is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). The CPAP equipment provides a gentle flow of positive-pressure air through a nasal mask to keep your airway open while you sleep, preventing snoring and apnea. You will experience immediate relief and find your energy and vitality restored. While CPAP works in most cases of sleep apnea, other methods might need to be employed to solve your sleep problem. Some less common treatments include oral appliances and or surgery. Your treatments will be most effective if you are fully informed of your condition and follow the prescribed actions that need to be taken to bring you the safest and quickest relief.

DISPLAY CASE: We built a wooden frame to house the project, which measures 35” x 16” x 17,” and then covered it in a rich burgundy velvet with narrow gold trim. The light affixed at the top of the back wall ensures that each detail of the intricate artwork is clearly noticeable. To protect the contents, we surrounded the project with Plexiglas. BACKGROUND: The background display exhibits colors that fit right in with the rest of the project. Standing in a realistic, life-like stance, the deer are captivating without dominating the scene, and the greenery flows right along with the 3D green-and-brown theme.

A large piece of Styrofoam forms the base of the exhibit. First we outlined the space for the pond and then hollowed the space by cutting out Styrofoam. Next we filled it with tiny pebbles and poured Realistic Water (a liquid craft product that sets into rocklike consistency over time) over the gap. Over the course of several days, we applied fresh coats of Realistic Water, layering some areas thicker than others. The layering process helped create dips and twirls

so that the soft ripples look almost real! We filled the pond with boats, ducks, an alligator and some other props and encircled it with a ring of tiny pebbles. 5
To distribute the grass evenly, we put a bunch of craft grass into an empty spice container and shook it out carefully across the foam. Then we applied an extrastrength craft glue to keep it all in place.
6
As a cost-friendly alternative to expensive storebought ones, we created trees of various sizes by gluing bunches of grass onto grape stems. To keep them steady, we pushed them deep into the foam and secured them with extra-strength glue, as well as a small ring of pebbles.

Enclosed by a fence made of skewers, this charming farm setting has a sukkah too! While the structure is brick and the roof makes for a non-kosher sukkah, it displays yet another Sukkos halachah. Log cottages and a brick well just outside the farm add a quaint touch to the scene.

YOU COOKED AND BAKED. You decorated the sukkah. You served six lovely meals and countless in-between-meal snacks. At some of the meals you rushed to beat the threatening rain. At other meals you enjoyed the beautiful weather and served in a leisurely manner, cherishing the conversation and the hearty zemiros. Now the lovely days of Chol Hamoed are here with its potential to create cherished family memories and closeness among relatives. Each family’s dynamics are unique, but following a few basic suggestions could mean the difference between a Chol Hamoed to remember, and a dissatisfactory day for all. Spontaneity and last-minute changes in plans can sometimes work out. However, advance planning is really advisable, especially when dealing with larger groups, bli ayin hara, and diverse ages. The first two rules apply for everyone, no matter what your actual plans are. 1. WHAT’S FOR SUPPER? Whether you take along a picnic lunch or just snacks, everyone comes home from a Chol Hamoed trip absolutely “staaarving.” Ideally, you cooked ahead of time and have the supper prepared and labeled in the freezer. If that’s the case, just take it out to defrost. If you do have to cook, utilize an oven timer or slow cooker. You could also take advantage of the father or son who is not joining your trip, but would rather spend Chol Hamoed catching up on his learning and/ or sleep. It’s advisable to set a reminder on your cell phone to call home to ask him to shut the oven. 2. STRAIGHTEN UP THE HOUSE BEFORE YOU LEAVE. If everyone pitches in, the beds will be made, toys picked up and the sink empty of dishes in no time. It’s even worth leaving a little later, because coming home to a neat house is a special pleasure. Under no circumstances should you — the mother, grandmother, hostess — say to the children, “You just go. I’ll clean up by myself after you leave.” It’s a sure prescription for resenting the guests instead of basking in the pleasure their presence evokes. 3. CONSIDER THE AGES OF THE TRIP PARTICIPANTS. My older daughters and some of my nieces remember with nostalgia my mother a”h taking only them to a museum or park,
and enjoying spending time with her almost-adult young ladies. Someone I know sometimes plans a boyfriendly trip, such as to a fire engine or train museum, for her grandsons ages six to bar mitzvah. Call ahead if you need to take a stroller, or if any of the participants have mobility issues. 4. IN THE EXCURSIONS SECTION, The Monsey View features a compilation of ideas of how to spend Chol Hamoed. Also study the advertisements, to see what will appeal to your family. If tickets have to be purchased in advance, check to see who wants to join, and put “buying tickets” on your to-do list. If necessary, arrange transportation before yom tov. 5. CELEBRATING CHOL HAMOED DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN A TRIP OUT OF THE HOUSE. With a little bit of planning you can enjoy the children while giving them a great time. When else do the kids have time to finish a whole game of Monopoly? Young geniuses would be thrilled to have an adult coach them in the finer points of chess. Have the little ones do small puzzles while the older kids attack (and finish) something big, such as a 1,000-piece masterpiece. Bring out the family photo albums, and if you have slides, this is a great time to show them. Have the kids practice and perform a play, and be a willing audience. Just make sure to have recharged batteries and space on your memory card. Home celebrations offer as many photo ops as day-long trips out of the house. 6. FUN FOOD CAN BE A GREAT CHOL HAMOED ACTIVITY. Now is the time to take out the popcorn popper, cotton candy machine and malted maker. You can also plan a supper that the children help prepare, such as a salad bar or a make-yourown-pizza-topping party. Let the kids help you bake and decorate cookies for yom tov. Just insist that cleanup is part of the fun.
After reading these ideas, you still may decide to opt out. It’s your prerogative. If you choose to stay home to read the book that’s calling your name from your closet shelf, or you want to spend some time with your friends, feel free to do so. After all, v’semachta b’chagecha means you too. Just maintain a positive attitude. However you decide to spend Chol Hamoed, have a wonderful time and enjoy the nachas gezunterheit!

WHAT WAS THE FIRST tefillah ever davened? It says in Bereishis 2:5, “V’chol siyach hasadeh… — Now no tree of the field was yet on the earth, neither did any herb of the field yet grow, because Hashem had not brought rain upon the earth, and there was no man to work the soil.” Rashi comments that “no one recognized the benefit of rain, but when man came and understood that they were essential to the world, he prayed for them, and they fell…” The trees and the herbs had waited just below the surface of the ground for man to pray for rain. The Mishnah states that the world is judged for water on Sukkos. (Rosh Hashanah 1:2) It isn’t enough to receive a certain amount of rain each year; we must daven that the rain should fall at good times (such as Friday night when everyone is home), in good places (on our fields rather than the mountaintops), and in amounts that are neither too much nor too little for any given time period. However, it would be inappropriate to daven for rain during Sukkos itself, when rain is not only not desired, but considered a sign that Hashem is not happy with us. Instead, we recite Tefillas Geshem on Shemini Atzeres. We daven for rain to fall in Eretz Yisroel, for all bracha that comes to the world comes through Eretz Yisroel. Our tefillos for rain take on three forms. The first is Tefillas Geshem, which we say once a year on Shemini Atzeres. Once we have davened Tefillas Geshem on Shemini Atzeres, we then go on to insert the second tefillah for rain into the second bracha of every Shemonah Esrei we daven until Pesach. (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 114) This tefillah is worded “Mashiv haruach umorid hageshem — He causes the wind to blow
136 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
and the rain to fall.” The third tefillah for rain is “V’sen tal umatar livracha — and bestow dew and rain for blessing.” We insert this tefillah into the ninth bracha of Shemonah Esrei during the months when Israel needs rain most. In Eretz Yisroel, this tefillah is recited starting from the seventh of Cheshvan so that those who traveled to Yerushalayim for Sukkos would have time to travel home before the rain would begin to fall. In chutz l’aretz, we begin saying this tefillah on the fourth or fifth of December, depending upon whether or not it is a leap year on the secular calendar. The time for rain runs from Sukkos until Pesach,
and the time for dew is from Pesach until Sukkos. We understand that rain and dew are essential for life, but there are deeper layers of meaning as well. I once heard on the posuk, “My doctrine drops as the rain, my speech flows as the dew” (Devarim 32:2), that the Torah is compared to both rain and dew. The main difference between rain and dew is that rain falls in accordance with our merits, but dew does not. We say every day in Krias Shema, “And it will be, if you will diligently obey My commandments which I enjoin upon you this day, to love Hashem and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, I will give rain for your land at the proper time, the early rain and the late rain... Take care, lest your heart be lured away, and you turn astray and worship alien gods and bow down to them. For then Hashem’s wrath will flare up against you, and He will close the heavens so that there will be no rain.” There is no similar pronouncement regarding dew; rain hints at the bracha that is drawn down through our own merits, while dew alludes to bracha that is unrelated to our worthiness. Rain responds to our efforts, just as rain falls due to moisture that rises. Dew, on the other hand, forms on its own. Likewise, there are two aspects of revelation we receive in Torah, one that we earn, and one that is a gift from Hashem. May this be a year in which we are zocheh to both.

THE SMELL OF SUKKOS in the air brings on an anticipation like no other yom tov. I secretly ponder: What is it about Sukkos that gets the little girl inside me so overwhelmingly excited, more than any other yom tov? Perhaps growing up as an only girl may have something to do with it. Having 13 brothers certainly created all sorts of unusual memories, but Sukkos memories certainly take the cake — and I’m not talking about the amount of cake the boys consumed from the start of bein hazmanim until the end, despite my mother’s labeling the aluminum pans as “potato kugel” or “kishka.” Her last resort was writing “Spitzer” (our nextdoor neighbor’s name) on them, but the boys would say, “I’m sure the Spitzers wouldn’t mind if I took one more cookie or rugelah.” Which brought my mother to her very last resort: a lock on the freezer. And all that disguised cake also explains why, in our family, the code for ice cream or other frozen delicacies is still “cold kugel.” Bein hazmanim also meant plenty of work and chores for everyone. The amount of pranks doubled too, with all the extra time on my brothers’ hands and a sister who didn’t respond too well to it all. Like finding the cookies I had painstakingly baked dangling in a green mesh bag from the sukkah ceiling — with an elaborate explanation that it’s a chashuve food. Or to hear the phone ring and see my friend’s number on the caller ID, only to realize that Brother #7 had answered the call with a courteous “You have reached Chevra Kaddisha,” scaring the wits out of her. It took some cajoling to explain to my brotherless friend that she had the right number, and that “Hello, butcher,” “Chevra Kaddisha,” “Wrong number” or “To speak to the maid, Debbie, press 1,” were all standard bein hazmanim phone greetings. The highlight of Sukkos, however, was the yom tov itself; it was the only yom tov that I sat like royalty and reveled in the fact that the boys, in a rush to go to sleep in the sukkah, were doing the post-seudah cleanup all on their own. While Pesach was the yom tov when I hardly got any rest, Sukkos was the ultimate five-star vacation. I would sit there with my feet up and revengefully observe and criticize as the table was being cleared and the floor swept. To top it off, I even got to sleep in my father’s bed while they all crammed up on their makeshift Sukkos cots. When they finally lay comfortably at night, gazing at the stars through the crevices of the s’chach, they would break out in a choir, singing into the wee hours of the morning. I would listen to their beautiful voices as they echoed in the quiet night, the chants of v’samachta b’chagacha reverberating in my ears and lulling me to sleep. As I listened in, serenity and peace of yom tov kicking in, I most definitely knew that all was forgiven and I was the proudest sister to the Friedlander boys’ club. Or, like my brothers would say, I was their best and worst sister, because when there is only one, there is not much of a choice.

THERE IS ONE SONG that I will always sing and probably dance to with whatever child happens to be nearby: Yigal Calek’s Mareh Kohen. This song has a special place in my heart, especially at this time of the year. The images flit through my mind: throngs waiting outside, the Kohen Gadol emerging whole, sins forgiven. This song is especially meaningful to me as the wife of a kohen. As a young child, I would traipse up Maple Avenue with my mother and siblings on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah, heading for shul. We’d sometimes run out to play for a bit when we needed a break, but my mother always made sure we would be back in time for Birchas Kohanim; she wanted us to get the special bracha. A few years later, at my engagement, I learned that my husband is a kohen! Today, with three young children, I don’t get to shul too often, but I try to get to shul for Birchas Kohanim whenever possible so that my children can hear Tatty bentching everyone. On Sukkos, when my husband davens at a local shtiebel where he’s asked to come as kohen, I do my best to attend. It’s still quite a feat, trying to guesstimate the time, the weather and the size of the pekelach needed. Being the wife of a kohen also comes with responsibilities. As evidenced by the lengthy lines in all stores, most women are busy replenishing the clothing closets at this time of year. There is one chief concern for the wives of all kohanim on erev yom tov: holey socks. Since kohanim remove their shoes while duchening, with duchening occurring four times over Sukkos, the best pre-yom tov gift for my husband would be: 1) mending all the holes in his socks (will this ever happen?), or 2) new socks (sounds better to me!). As many times as he tries to convince me how economical and practical it would be to mend his socks, I have to admit I have never done it because by the time the socks get holes, they are either worn out, missing their pair or discolored. It seems pointless to begin darning them, and brings to mind the image of an old lady on rocking chair with a bun. Can you tell that I do not like to sew? All kidding aside, a kohen has myriad rules and responsibilities I didn’t even know existed until I married my husband. One is the requirement to be on call to duchen at a shul that doesn’t have steady kohanim as members. Another means that my husband will only go to a hospital in case of dire need, with approval from his dayan (who is also a kohen). I, however, dream of the day when being a kohen will impact us on a daily basis. I think of the throngs of people awaiting the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur, the splendor and awe almost tangible on the holiest day in the year. In my fantasy, I am packing up the entire family before being oleh regel, the children so filled with joy that they can’t sleep. I am watching my young son, climbing posts to help set up the huge lamps for the Simchas Beis Hashoeva. The streets are lit throughout the night, jam-packed with people dancing and juggling. The elderly link hands with the young, being blessed, and Yerushalayim is alive and golden with elation again. May we be zoche to that day, speedily!

SIMCHAS TORAH PREPARATIONS mean different things to different people. Many women find it hard to figure out how to warm the food for the seudah while they’re in shul. Will everyone want to start the seudah right away, or will it take two hours to settle down, in which case the food will be dried out or burned to a crisp? Some women say that no one really eats on Simchas Torah, but that has never been my experience. Somehow, whatever I serve gets consumed so I get ready by preparing yet another fourcourse yom tov seudah that everyone will enjoy. Preparation for the men may involve planning which wine bottles to bring for the kiddush — will there be herring or hot dishes? — how much to bid for chassan Torah and chassan Bereishis, or whether to finish up being ma’aver sedrah that last parshah, which is really quite short but was left to the last minute, because, well, it’s the last parshah, and things got so busy over the yom tov season. And then there are the children. Their preparations consist of bags. Some children use grocery shopping bags, some kids use their baby’s diaper bags and some kids come prepared with gallon-sized Ziploc bags with a double sliding zipper. Whatever the container, the most important thing is to make sure the nosh is kept safe. Because isn’t that what Simchas Torah is all about? The goodies? When I was growing up, we got a big, shiny apple and a large chocolate bar, and we considered ourselves lucky. Now my children gather up armfuls of sweets. Literally. Their arms cradle piles and piles of foil taffies, plastic-wrapped lollies, powdered sugar candy packets and an assortment of crumbling cookies. They discuss how many pieces of candy they can throw over the mechitzah, how many they can catch, and whether it is worth it to trade three Twizzlers for a Triple Dipper. Can a broken lollipop be exchanged? What about a green jelly bean? Is that worth anything at all? I stand with the other mothers, watching the hectic activity in amusement. My friend Yehudis tells her daughter, “Look, they’re giving out those marshmallow bars.”

We raise our eyebrows, and she says, “If I don’t tell her about it now, she’ll feel bad later when everyone else will have one.” We watch how frantic the children are, scooping up candy that has spilled onto the floor and going back for seconds and thirds, and I wonder if I ever feel passionate enough to get down onto the floor and scoot between the chairs to pick up something, just because I don’t want to miss out. If only I could be that excited about gathering up mitzvos, have the same level of enthusiasm in gathering up one more treasure for Olam Haba. I’m holding my children’s bags as they run off for their aliyah, and when the men chant “Kol Hana’arim,” I wonder: what am I holding on to from this day? Will I celebrate my share in my husband’s learning when he leaves the house every day at 6:00 a.m. for his early morning seder? Will I maintain my enthusiasm as I drop my son off to learn with his chavrusa, with whom he arranged to learn smack in middle of suppertime? Will I remember to whisper tefillos that my children should have hatzlachah in their learning even as I sit with them to review the alefbeis for the thousandth time? What kind of bag should I be carrying? What kind of receptacle will hold all of these hopes and tefillos? I can’t carry the Torah in shul, and when my children take back their nosh, my arms are empty yet again. I can only open my eyes and heart and absorb the moment with my neshamah so that it will last me for the upcoming year.

SIMCHA IN THE SUKKAH AND IN OUR HOME THE MINHAG OF EATING a small meal in the sukkah on the last day of yom tov and then dancing back into the house symbolizes that we are bringing along the simcha for all year round. Keeping this in mind, I want to work on creating a peace-
156 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 3, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
ful and happy atmosphere in the sukkah, giving my children such powerful and beautiful memories to hold on to long after the colorful posters and fake birds are packed away. When less-than-perfect moments come a person’s way, he can
ride with the waves if his backbone is supported by positive minutes and hours spent with his family who love and treasure him. When all is said and done, who is ultimately responsible for my children’s happiness, my husband’s happiness, my mother-in-law’s happiness? That is up to Hashem. All I can do is my very best in providing food and comfort and then leave the results to Hashem. Bending over backward and causing myself or others distress in order to please people is unnecessary. Remembering to take care of myself is super important, because if I don’t come first at times, no one else can come second. It is virtually impossible to pour for others from an empty cup. Happiness holds a different meaning for everyone. My little
ones are adorable when they demand major cross-country Chol Hamoed trips or yom tov meals consisting of nosh and junk. They may even draw a newfangled pyramid of the food groups, describing how ice cream and taffies are essential to every child’s simchas hachaim. Eating normal food will make them miserable, is the unanimous claim. It is age-appropriate and healthy
for children to test boundaries. As the mommy, I can smile and empathize with their wants and needs while standing my ground and knowing my truth of when and how much. On that same note, Chazal saw the danger in excess feasting and revelry and created the concept of “Bahab” fast days. (Bais=Monday, Hay=Thursday and Bais=Monday again) once after Sukkos and after Pesach. It is to sober us up from all the wine, sugar, pleasure, time off from work outside the home, etc. that may bring out the unrestrained child in us and chas v’shalom cause us to sin. Simcha is also gratitude. I voice “baruch Hashem” many times a day to show my children how I don’t take anything for granted and that everything comes from Hashem. Saying it aloud reminds me and my sweetie pies that we have so much to be grateful for. Sukkos is also called Chag Ha’asif, reminding us to be grateful for the bountiful past year coming full circle. In the winter, nature grows. In the summer, it dries and ripens awaiting harvest. Thus the cycle has ended and we thank Hashem for all our gifts and daven for His continued grace. Considering the sukkah, its decorations, esrog, lulav, and all the other tangible pieces, we see Sukkos is a very physical celebration. In Krias Shema it says if you obey Hashem, then all your physical needs will be met, because Hashem rewards those who use gashmius for ruchnius. Precisely so, we enter the shaky sukkah structure, demonstrating that we understand all gashmius is temporary. It is a means, not an end, with which to serve Hashem. Saying “thank you” is the first step in using what Hashem has given me for the
good. I hope to start each meal with a personal thank you to Hashem for each shining, heilige neshama around the table this year. Simcha, in a way, is bitachon. It is reflected in the halachah that two and a half walls in a sukkah is enough, as the shape represents Hashem enveloping us in His arms. During Sukkos I put my whole body in Hashem’s hands quite literally when we light candles, daven, eat, etc. in the sukkah. I trust Him completely. If I find myself in a situation where I think life is just too hard, on yom tov I can let go and recognize that Hashem Who created me and my capabilities put me on this path. Obviously, He is certain that this is good for me and that I will find my way. I am in His loving hands. This Sukkos I really want to feel the presence of the Shechinah in our newly constructed wooden little home. I may give myself some alone time in the sukkah, just Hashem, me and a strawberry-flavored tea, perhaps. Honestly, I cannot always summon this closeness. People are not robots and feelings are not choices on a vending machine. But I can sit there, whisper to Hashem how I am feeling, what I am working on and know for certain He is right there with me and oh, so proud. When we try to create a simchas yom tov for our families, it is a firm stepping stone in the right direction for my family and me. New year, here we come! • According to some experts, there are close to 1,600 identified species of bamboo. • Bamboos are native to all continents besides Antarctica and Europe, though today there are bamboo groves in Europe as well. • Even though some of its woody species resemble trees, bamboo is actually part of the grass family, and not surprisingly, the largest of its kind. No mowing this kind of grass! • Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, with one of its species holding the record for growing an average of 35 inches per day! This means that, at an inch every forty minutes, you can almost watch it grow! • The culm (cane, or stem) of the largest of bamboo species (Dendrocalamus sinicus) can reach 14.5 inches in diameter and a height of 151 feet! • Though a bamboo culm will reach its full diameter and height in a single two- to three-month growing period, its roots spread and new shoots will appear each spring. These new shoots will continue to grow in the same manner, also reaching their full size in one growing season. The more mature the colony plant is, the wider and taller the new canes will grow. It takes
168 / THE MONSEY VIEW
between 4 and 15 years for different species to mature to the point where the new culms reach their maximum size, and each culm will live for approximately 10 years. • Though bamboo culms no longer grow after their original growing period, they produce foliage each year. These leaves provide the necessary nutrients for the plants to spread and thrive, and that’s why bamboo requires no pesticides or fertilizer to produce healthy shoots of bamboo each year. • While some bamboo species flower annually or sporadically, some species flower gregariously. This means that they flower every 60 to 130 years, and when they reach this preprogrammed stage, the plants of this species flower worldwide more or less at the same time, even when they’re located in different climates across the globe! The reason for
this is that most of these bamboos are cultivated from a mother plant, and not from seed. Oddly, when these bamboos flower and produce seeds, they use enormous amounts of energy, and most of them will die soon thereafter. • A grove of bamboo releases 35% more oxygen than an equivalent copse of trees. • Another advantage of bamboo over trees is the short time from planting to harvest. Bamboo can be harvested in 1 to 5 years, versus 10 to 20 years for most softwoods and 30 to 40 for hardwoods. • Bamboo is one of the strongest building materials with a tensile strength equivalent to that of mild steel! Bamboo can also tolerate extreme conditions. It was actually the only plant to survive the atomic blast in Hiroshima in 1945. • Since bamboo is extraordinarily flexible and lightweight, bamboo
structures can withstand earthquakes without the bamboo’s sustaining any damage, similar to the way skyscrapers are designed to allow them to sway along with the wind. • Clothes made from bamboo fibers are superclothes! They naturally sustain body temperature, wick away excess moisture, and with their deodorizing properties, keep their owners nice and fresh. That’s why there are companies devoted entirely to creating bamboomade clothes. • In years gone by, great inventors have turned to bamboo to take advantage of its remarkable qualities. While Thomas Edison wasn’t the first person to create a lightbulb, he was the first to create a product that was practical and affordable. The key to his success? Using carbonized bamboo for the bulb’s filament, which was as durable as it was cheap! Similarly, Alexander Graham Bell used bamboo to create the needle when refining Edison’s phonograph.

Ten Q&A’S for Travelers Brought to you: by Interstate Chaverim
“Where are we going?” Every Jewish home on Chol Hamoed hears the constant nagging of children itching to drive off. Of course, by the time you decide where to go, it’s often late and you arrive just before the zoo or amusement park closes. But, oh well, as long as you got into the car and the kids dirtied the car with myriad snacks. But what happens… when the car coughs or sputters, the tires squeak unnaturally or the key taunts you from inside a locked car? Interstate Chaverim is here to help you with all your roadside trouble.
1
#
7
#
Well, a bigger chance is that someone will actually show up to you, approximately 75% of the time, we do find a member in the area to help out. Sometimes it takes longer and sometimes quicker. Even if we don't have anyone around, the Interstate dispatchers are exceptionally knowledgeable and can likely guide you over the phone on how to change a tire or locate a close by tire shop, road service, etc. Interstate will guide you until you're back on the road and will never leave you hanging.
What should I do first if I ever get a flat tire while driving down the highway?
Slow down, check your rearview mirror for oncoming traffic, and carefully pull over to the right shoulder as soon as possible. Never stop on the left shoulder or in the middle of a highway. If there is no shoulder, continue driving until you reach a safe spot or an exit ramp.
2
#
What if there is no member around in the area to assist me?
8
#
And once I'm at a safe location?
Yes, you can! You might incur a small extra fee. The good news is that many car insurance policies and major credit cards include road service. You may also call 911 for help since there are many highways that have access to a free roadside service program, which the police can help you with.
Look for the spare tire that comes along with your car. If you can’t locate it, check your car’s manual.
3
#
When should I call Chaverim?
Call your local Chaverim branch, if you are having difficulty changing the tire yourself because you're missing one of the tools or run into to a problem. Of course, you should also call with any other roadside issues.
4
#
So where does Interstate Chaverim come into the picture?
9
#
5
How many members get the Interstate call message?
Many! More than 700 Chaverim volunteers from 20 Chaverim organization are on the database!
6
#
What precautions can I take to avoid road trouble?
Things happen to the most experienced drivers and luxurious of cars. However, basic maintenance goes a long way in avoiding much heartache. Here is a list of basic ideas: having oil changes on time, not waiting for the last minute to fill up on gas or to buy new tires, ensuring that you have a spare tire and the necessary tools. It is also a phenomenal idea to hide a spare car key somewhere underneath the car in case the key gets locked in. Avoid using the car for its lights or music without the engine running because it drains the battery.
You never have to contact Interstate Chaverim! If you are having trouble in an area not covered by any Chaverim organization, your local dispatcher will contact Interstate Chaverim. The Interstate dispatcher will then alert all Chaverim members on the Interstate system with your request for help.
#
Could I sign up for AAA when I already have a flat tire?

What are some memorable calls Interstate received?
Interstate Chaverim handles many calls each day, and we don't always get to hear the story behind the call. What may seem to us like a simple flat tire or lockout might possibly be a very major deal to the caller. Often, we get calls from traumatized passengers who have been in a car accident and need transportation to reach their destination. We had several calls from people stuck on their way a close family members wedding, or a levayeh, r”l. We once even had a Chassan and Kallah stranded after their wedding
What's the furthest a member has ever gone to help a fellow Jew?
Klal Yisroel is fortunate to have such dedicated yidden! We have already had members driving 3-4 hours to help someone. But the idea of Interstate is to find a member that happens to be close by to the call. We have already found members that were just five minutes away in some far flung areas all over the US.
It’s unfortunately a daily occurrence for us to get calls from people stranded on a far flung highway. We once had a caller stranded for 36 hours on a holiday weekend with two blown tires and no open tire shops in the area. Regardless of the call, we always try our very best to be that chaver in the time of need. Wishing all of Klal Yisroel a Chag Kosher V'sameach and a safe trip.

See you at 4:00 at the clubhouse we built, near my father’s chocolate factory!
As usual, bring your knapsacks so we can do our homework!
Mutty, your father is coming. Let’s go into the factory with him.
Wait until we finish reviewing our Chumash, Shimi.
Why are there so many workers today?
You bet!
Are we going the factory?
Increased production. We have a huge order to fill by the end of the week. Fancy chocolates going to London.
Hey kids, you’ve come to visit? Try not to disturb. We need to keep up our pace! Why isn’t the generator working?
Blackout!

Why isn’t the generator working? Could this be a terrorist attack? Maybe we should leave via the emergency exit.
Where’s my father? I’m going to his office to get him.
So frightening!
Abba! Everyone left already! Come quickly!
Mutty, go! Why are you waiting? It’s dangerous!
Mutty, don’t be afraid. We’ll go out with everyone, and then call the electric company.
Mission accomplished! I disconnected the electricity by damaging the generator.
We got a little vacation today.
Let’s go back inside. Back to work, everyone!
Hey, the lights are on! Ahhh, we just left and the electricity came right back on.
It was nothing, just an electrical short.
Phew! They’re coming back inside. I must get out of this room before they notice me.

Real Estate How Seven Days Impact a Purchase SUKKOS IS JUST ONE WEEK of the year, but going from home to home, open house to open house, it is apparent that this one week of yom tov has an impact on the home being purchased. While the wife may be looking at the kitchen, assessing whether there is room for her milchig, fleishig, parve and Shabbos dishes, and a spot for the second refrigerator, and the children will be looking upstairs to see where they can find their own secret place, and of course, choosing their bedrooms, what is the husband doing? He will be walking outside, looking up to see where will he put his sukkah and to assess whether he has to cut down any trees for it to be under the stars. And that’s not all: He’s also checking whether the location for the sukkah is convenient and large enough to host guests and if it has easy access to the kitchen to facilitate serving. Are you one of those who remember growing up in a more urban area, where the sukkah was in the courtyard shared with other families a few flights down, or on a porch (and only a few feet of the porch didn’t have another porch over it) or on the roof? I grew up in Monsey, and I remember our sukkah being on the grass a few feet away from our apartment, and in another home, the sukkah was outside the kitchen window, and my mother would pass the food out through the window. It seems that those days are gone. Monsey and its surrounding communities have become so accommodating. Many of the condos being built have “sukkah roofs” which turn an interior room into a sukkah one week a year. Others are designed so that one porch is not directly over another. Most homes have porches or decks which are suitable for the sukkah. I know that Pesach is not for a few more months, but that week of the year is also a factor in choosing a home. Many families want a Pesach kitchen, at least another sink and oven, so when perusing a home, a prospective family is also assessing the feasibility of adding a Pesach kitchen.

Choosing a home is subjective, and personal tastes don’t always factor in the overall appeal, desirability and value of a home.
My question is, do these amenities — the indoor sukkah roof or a space for a Pesach kitchen — add to the value of a home? And can an appraiser appraise a home with an indoor sukkah or Pesach kitchen for more than a similar home in the same area without these amenities? Robert Adler of Adler Associates, an appraiser in Monsey, says, “There is no meaningful, quantifiable contributory value for either of these features in the general population of market participants. Some select families may pay slightly more for the indoor sukkah, but there are so few of them that it is not feasible to formulate an adjustment factor that could be used in an appraisal.” Keller William Realtor Moshe Einhorn opines, “I am hearing a lot from clients asking for a Pesach kitchen (or at least a space for it), but they are not asking for an indoor sukkah.” He added, “Some of the women absolutely refuse an indoor sukkah, because by hanging the decorations, the paint will be damaged.” Having these accommodations in a home should not play any part in the loan approval, except if there are more than two kitchens in a single-family home, i.e. mother-daughter home and an additional Pesach kitchen. So to summarize: One person’s wish list may be on the “absolutely no” list of another person. Choosing a home is subjective, and personal tastes don’t always factor in the overall appeal, desirability and value of a home.
