I know I’m writing a bit too late, as this should have been addressed before Simchas Torah, but now that I’m dealing with the effects of the bagloads of candy that my kids amassed in shul on yom tov, I’d like to make a suggestion for the future. Perhaps it’s time for all those who are distributing all that junk to think of different incentives for the kids. There are plenty of little prizes that cost just a few cents apiece which are not muktzah that have all the value for the kids without loading them up with sugar, food coloring and all that bad stuff. There are also snacks and different foods that can substitute the real junk. As you generously throw the pounds and pounds of candy, please think about the children who are going to be collecting, hoarding and ingesting all that. It’s really not good for their teeth, their health and their minds. Hoping for Future Change

There have recently been a number of letters and articles regarding Lyme disease in many frum publications. This has been very helpful in raising awareness of the disease and its prevention. While this is a very important and positive step, I feel compelled to write yet another letter in order to dispel a lot of ignorance and misinformation about the subject. First of all, the term “Lyme disease” is very misleading, because it only addresses one of the many infections that are usually present in most victims of this dreaded and debilitating illness. There are many coinfections that can accompany Lyme disease, as they are also tick-borne in nature. This is why many people remain suffering from “chronic Lyme disease” even after conventional treatment of antibiotics. Some of the coinfections, such as Bartonella, which can

cause severe psychological and neurological disorders, can be even more debilitating than the actual Lyme disease. Patients are often misdiagnosed and put on psychological medication that is for the most part ineffective and may cause severe side effects. There are several other coinfections that can cause paralysis symptoms, such as Bell’s Palsy, brain fog and muscular and joint problems. Other symptoms can include digestive and vision issues, which severely affect the quality of life for both the victims and their family or caretakers. The main point of this letter, though, is not only to alert the public about the severity of the disease, but also to inform people about necessary treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors and pediatricians are either ignorant or misinformed about the proper methods of diagnosis and necessary protocols of treatment for Lyme disease and its related coinfections. Many practitioners will simply prescribe one month of Doxycycline and will then give the patient a “clean bill of health.” The patient might actually feel better, but more often than not, the coinfection is not addressed. While it might suppress the symptoms for a while, the infection is not completely gone, and patients will relapse with more advanced and severe symptoms at a later time. It is imperative for anyone suffering from this disease to seek out treatment from a Lyme-literate doctor. There is a listing of ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society) physicians who are knowledgeable in the proper treatment of this disease. There are organizations such as Chai for Lyme or Yesh Tickvah which can assist

RE: GETTING AROUND TOWN (ISSUE #116) In response to getting around Monsey, I agree with the person who wrote about the TOR bus being a great solution. I am wondering if any of your readers have the email address for the Department of Transportation, so we can write to them. I hope they can add the route from Saddle River Road to Pine Brook Road. It would be so convenient for the Chestnut Ridge residents. Thank you for your wonderful magazine. E.R.
TEHILLIM UPDATE About a year ago, there was a car accident in which two Traveling Chassidim got hurt. We were asked to say Tehillim, and I am still davening for them. Does anyone have an update? On this note, it is always a good idea to update those who were asked to say Tehillim for a specific person, and also to keep a list of who gave you a name to daven for so you can go back to that person for an update. Wishing refuos and yeshuos for everyone. B. Klein EDITORS’ BULLETIN: In our Sukkos Excursions section, there was an error in the pricing listed under Gravity Vault. Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences it may have caused. Please call in for correct pricing information and for the necessary reservations.

As told to: Basya Lev
I HAD JUST FINISHED taking a CPR course when my husband, son and I were in the car, heading home. We were at the stop sign at at the corner of Vincent Road when I suddenly heard terrible banging on my car window. Frightened, I turned around to see what was going on and found a woman in a state of panic, repeating over and over again that her son was choking on a candy. I jumped out of my car, ran over to the six-year-old, and quickly did the Heimlich maneuver I had just learned. Baruch Hashem, to our collective relief, the candy flew out of his mouth.

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:
EDITION CHAPTER 9
By: Basya Kovacs
46 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 18, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
BY NOW, YOU HAVE probably seen the TAP logo on many everyday food items in the grocery store. Chuster Pretzels, Sunrise Popcorn, Mehadrin Yobar, and the famous Grab1 bars are all products that have recently received TAP (Tanya Approved Product) certification. So what does becoming TAP-certified entail? How does a company go about receiving our approval? When a company approaches us for TAP certification, there is usually financial consideration. Companies have become aware that a significant percentage of their consumers are health- and weight-conscious, and of that base, many are following Nutrition by Tanya’s balanced, normal approach to eating. Even people who are not direct clients of ours are familiar with our logo and know that it is synonymous not only with health, but with weight loss. So obtaining TAP certification means that when a nutrition-conscious consumer goes shopping, the TAP-certified item becomes a natural choice. The process for the company is uncomplicated. In short, a company interested in obtaining TAP certification will send us a product’s lab analysis so that we have evidence of accurate nutrition information. Some companies’ products already fit our guidelines, so the process is amazingly simple. Other companies need to tweak their product by reducing the fat content or replacing the sweetener and so on. Assuming the lab report meets our guidelines, we can approve the product. There is a fee involved in using our branded logo, and a contract is
signed. The contract basically states that the company agrees not to place our logo on any unapproved products, and that if there are any changes to an approved product’s nutritional information, they will make us aware of the change. Once all that is signed, they are TAP-certified! A similar process is involved in creating those TAP menus you see popping up across the tri-state area. When a restaurant or cafe approaches us to create a TAP menu, we work with them to either use existing menu items or tweak the foods slightly so that it is fit for someone following Tanya’s diet. The menu will then have a selection of approved choices and will inform the consumer how to count the item on the plan. Because our plans are customized to each individual person, when putting a TAP menu in place, we aim to fit the portion size to the average client’s plan. For example, when we write on a menu item “Count as a complete lunch,” we are referring to a client on an average plan. A man weighing 280 pounds or a woman weighing 110 pounds would know to ask his or her nutrition counselor how to adjust accordingly. Personally, working with companies and restaurants to approve what they offer is one of my favorite parts of the job. It is thrilling for me to make such a huge difference in the way people eat. The fact that companies are willing to change the ingredients of a product because they see the demand from the consumer is amazing. It means that we are all becoming healthier! If the consumer doesn’t care
about health, companies are likely to just produce food that tastes good, regardless of whether or not it is good for them. But as the consumer base becomes more health- and weight-conscious, the companies begin to change in order to keep up with the demand! The same goes for restaurants. When people eat out indiscriminately and tell themselves they will pick up their diet the next day, restaurants are happy to provide calorie-laden, unhealthy food. But as more and more consumers would like to eat a restaurant meal without sabotaging their healthy lifestyle, the owners and restaurateurs are happy to try to meet the demand. This process actually has somewhat of a cyclical effect. When one company or restaurant sees that there is a demand for healthy, portion-controlled food, the next one realizes it as well, and they also look to obtain TAP certification. This, in turn, brings health and weight-loss consciousness to even the ambivalent consumer. If healthy food options are readily available, it becomes a nobrainer to take advantage of them, even if he or she isn’t following a strict nutrition plan. Of course it also makes people more aware of Nutrition by Tanya, so it really is a win-win-win situation. Noach
By Malka Schneps
SHLOIMY AND DEVORAH HALPERN raised their first four children with a healthy balance of love and discipline. They both took their roles as parents very seriously, and they followed the advice of their own parents as well as parenting experts via shiurim, books and articles. They showered their children with love and maintained a joyful atmosphere at home, but at the same time they established clear rules and boundaries, which they strictly enforced. Their children understood that “no” meant “no.” Then they had little Moishele. Moishy added a completely new dimension to the Halpern household. With his impish grin and twinkling eyes, Moishy managed to turn many a “no” into a “yes.” If the Halperns instructed the children not to take any more candy, little Moishy would grab a piece and run off squealing with laughter and delight. When they would try to discipline him, his sweet, dimpled smile and joyful giggles would melt them. And when he asked for something, he would turn on the charm, and it was nearly impossible to deny him. Yes, Moishy was born with a large measure of chein, and this chein enabled him to sidestep the Halpern family’s otherwise orderly system of discipline on more occasions than they would care to admit. The Gemara (Sanhedrin 108) states that Noach was not saved from the Mabul because he was a tzaddik. Rather, he was saved because he found chein in Hashem’s eyes, as it is written: “V’Noach matza chein b’einei Hashem — But Noach found favor in the eyes of Hashem.” (Bereishis 6:8) Similarly, R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, quotes the Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh that Noach’s tzidkus could not have saved him, because Hashem was not looking to punish resha’im, but to destroy the entire world and start over with a new creation. Rather, Noach and his family were saved because of Noach’s chein in Hashem’s eyes. Indeed, the word chein is formed by reversing the letters of the name Noach. R’ Biderman explains: “When someone has chein, people naturally desire to do their will. Keviyachol, when one finds chein in Hashem’s eyes, Hashem will also do favors for them, even beyond the standard rules of the world.” How can we find chein in Hashem’s eyes? R’ Biderman brings several sources that show us how.
50 / THE MONSEY VIEW
First he quotes the Chareidim (9:42) that Noach found chein in Hashem’s eyes because he was always noach — tranquil and serene, never displaying anger. By accepting even the most challenging nisyonos with tranquility, a person who is always serene demonstrates that he realizes everything in his life has been decreed by Hashem and is exactly as it should be. A person who acts with peaceful tranquility in every situation attains chein in Hashem’s eyes. R’ Biderman also cites the Sfas Emes and the Kedushas Levi that another way to attain chein in Hashem’s eyes is by overcoming the yetzer hara. Noach brought a beautiful fragrance to Hashem with his korbanos, leading Hashem to declare, “I will no longer curse the earth because of man, for the yetzer of man’s heart is ra from his youth, and I will no longer smite all living things as I have done.” (Bereishis 8:21) It is never easy to battle the yetzer hara, but keeping in mind the chein we can garner in Hashem’s eyes by succeeding could be just the motivation we need to win the battle. Rav Chaim Shmulevitz, zt”l, brings yet another way to acquire chein in Hashem’s eyes (Sichos Mussar, Ma’amar 4). It says in Mishlei, “V’la’anavim yiten chein — but [if he goes] to the humble, he evokes chein.” (Mishlei 3:34) Likewise, the Gemara (Avodah Zarah 6a) explains the word, “Noach ish tzaddik tamim” (Bereishis 6:9) to mean that Noach was complete in his actions, which Rashi says means that he was humble. Rav Shmulevitz explains that humility brings chein and the special protection that comes along with it. There are times in life when we may find ourselves up against an obstacle we seemingly cannot overcome, r”l. Whether it be an illness in the family, financial hardship, struggles in shidduchim or fertility, or any other nisayon, the usual channels do not seem to help. We daven, we seek brachos from tzaddikim, we give tzedakah, and yet the obstacle does not move. It is at such a time that we could surely use a good measure of chein in Hashem’s eyes, which R’ Biderman says can bring us favors from Hashem “even beyond the standard rules of the world.” In the words of Birkas Hashachar, may Hashem grant us today and every day chein in His eyes and in the eyes of all who see us.

It was supposed to be a ten-minute peek at GymPros. Suddenly, my cellphone rings. My babysitter wants to know if I am okay, because more than an hour has passed without me noticing. I don’t hear the phone at first; I am so totally enamored by what I am seeing — a fully functioning, professional, frum gymnastics facility available to every child in the community.
The view from the designated viewing area where parents share in the GymPros’ experience.

WHEN I ARRIVE, I’M BUZZED IN BY MRS. G., the evening office manager. Instantly, she’s at my side, making sure I’m comfortable. The girls and coaches revel in the presence of the GymPros bubby who really cares about each of them. She checks up on each coach’s well-being and helps the children get ready for their carpool. She’s on top of all the comings and goings and ensures that every child is safely dropped off and picked up by an adult. I still remember visiting GymPros two years ago. Malky Blum, proprietor of GymPros, spoke about the ten-year lease she signed for her gym. But it’s only two years later, and GymPros has outgrown that once-oversized facility. The new location in the Central Crossing Shopping Center, (next to Kidichic and Turtleboo) is triple in size and beauty. It’s everything — and more — you’d find at the leading gymnasiums in the country. The authentic frum flavor and kosher values only add to the experience. It’s not surprising. Malky has been dreaming of GymPros since she made her first cartwheel across her parents’ dining room. And Malky doesn’t dream big; she dreams huge. She doesn’t do big; she does huge! She would never
nastics skills) had arrived to GymPros without any previous gymnastics exposure. The gym is large enough to host eight classes at once, and the strategic setup enables each child to get the most out of their hour at GymPros. A coach is in charge of each group, and I observe their complete devotion to the children. The Program Director, Mrs. Ruchama Katz, can be seen going from group to group ensuring that every child is getting the full GymPros experience. About forty children are neatly divided in groups and totally absorbed in their activities; they hardly notice me. Because this is their hour — the hour when they shine and grow. Little kids, maybe six years old, cartwheel in a neat procession across the Tumbl Traks and spring floors, while the coaches stand next to them helping them do a bit better than the week before. As one coach noted, “I tell each child that the only one she has to compete with is herself.” After each successful move, the entire team cheers. No wonder GymPros consistently meets its goal of “100% smiles on 100% of the children.” “GymPros, at this point, is not a luxury,” Romema Feiner of New Hempstead tells me as soon as she sees me. She came amid the yom tov chaos
Because this is their hour — the hour when they shine and grow. run a place that doesn’t reflect every single one of her values and dreams. The large windows in the viewing lobby overlook the gym. Muted hues for the walls and brightly colored, Olympic-sized equipment make up the 6,000-square-foot gym. I arrive at the end of a recreational class — a noncompetitive class with phenomenal coaches. The class is designed for children ages 6 to 17. The classes may be recreational in nature, but you would never know it by the professionalism and attention to detail shown by the coaches dotting the large facility. I can’t believe that the children in front of me doing aerials and back walkovers (some of the challenging recreational gym-
to do carpool, because “my daughter’s healthy confidence is completely thanks to GymPros. You can’t imagine how many people I sent here after I saw the amazing effects it had on my daughter. She’s here for the second year, and she wouldn’t miss a class for anything.” GymPros gives a child much more than gymnastics coaching: It teaches commitment toward a goal and enables a child to succeed outside a classroom setting. Another mother comments that her daughter has a difficult time with the long schools hours but “gymnastics is my daughter’s lifesaver. It’s healthy energy in a structured and loving environment.”
GymPros believes in the adage, “When values are clear, decisions are easy.” These five values are the driving force behind the GymPros model.
SAFETY: Always. All the way. This is promoted through the use of the highest quality of equipment, qualified coaching and careful training procedures.
COURTESY: Starting with Mrs. G’s warmth and ending with the heartfelt “gmar chasimah tovahs” between parents, students and staff, the GymPros’ culture is truly built on how they treat each other.
PREMIER GYMNASTICS: GymPros spares no effort to provide excellence in everything gymnastics related. Nothing short of that passes the GymPros bar!
ENJOYMENT: True to their value statement, “Happy children are our favorite type,” GymPros is creative in developing ways for children to enjoy this intense sport.
EFFICIENCY: There are customer-friendly procedures for every step. From their online registration to their customer service systems, it’s apparent that GymPros values their customers and respects their time.

PRESCHOOL (ages 3–5) Coaches help your child develop many skills for optimal body and mind coordination. Beneficial for strength, balance, spatial awareness, flexibility and more.
RECREATIONAL GYMNASTICS (ages 6–17)
Learn and practice a world of fun gymnastics skills at your own pace. No gymnastics background necessary.
That’s GymPros’ mission statement exactly: “We use gymnastics as a tool to create healthy, confident children. We teach in a safe, progressive manner and appreciate the efforts as much as the achievements. We continuously introduce our community to the highest level of gymnastics training with the most up-to-date equipment and premier coaching.” The next class I watch is a Team Class. The Team is a competitive class training to compete on a national level. Everyone who gets a taste of gymnastics gets hooked on the sport, but for those exceptionally talented with a drive to take it to the next level, Team Class is just for them. I catch up with Team Coach Mrs. Jolie Levy, a decorated gymnast and USAG coach, now on the GymPros staff. “It’s awesome,” she says. “I see commitment and talent in the community. I love working here!” I’m impressed at the perfect blend of complete professionalism without compromising on the courtesy between parents, staff and students. A few years ago, GymPros, along with other Jewish gymnastics teams across the country, formed the JGL, an acronym for Jewish Gymnastics League. Together they host two annual competitions on the USAG levels. USAG (USA Gymnastics) is the national

governing body for gymnastics, and the JGL uses USAG rules, routines and scoring in order to provide frum girls with an equal opportunity at competitive gymnastics. The girls on the team stretch way more than their muscles to master the skills needed to compete. They stretch themselves by giving up lots of free time, by eating and sleeping right and making sure to attend every class. Team Head Coach Mrs. Tricia Wymore dedicates herself to creating a professional team setting that ensures that every gymnast gets the proper coaching and necessary support so that she can be a true champion. These Team girls take their craft so seriously that Coach T (As Mrs. Wymore is fondly referred to by her students) directs a program called PROgress, where the children get directions on how to condition and stretch at home on their offdays in a safe manner so that they can be at their peak when it’s time to compete on the grand stage. It was a testament to the hard work put in by the entire GymPros Team and staff when GymPros went up to accept first place at the Butterfly Invitational (the 2017 Spring Competition) in Staten Island. GymPros is the place where gymnasts go PRO, the place where every frum girl can shine on her own level, at her own pace. I watch the team practice backflips. One after the other, they backflip three times across the gym floor landing upright each time. I can only imagine the feeling of accomplishment these girls taste week after week. At the far left corner, girls build muscle on the bars. They swing their bodies upward and out, looking similar to a gliding eagle. And they are. They have been given the chance to soar.

Hungry Hollow Road Overpass Closed Indefinitely CHESTNUT RIDGE RESIDENTS are facing lengthy headaches after a Chol Hamoed accident caused structural damages to the Hungry Hollow Road Thruway overpass. The Journal News reported that a southbound truck hit the overpass on Hoshana Rabba at approximately 9:30 a.m. The accident snarled traffic on both the Thruway and Route 59 in Airmont for hours, with the New York State Police closing down the bridge at 3:00 p.m. The overpass, which is between Jon Leif Lane and Old Nyack Turnpike, was discovered to have sustained significant damage and is closed to both vehicles and pedestrians for “a yet undetermined, long period of time,” according to the Ramapo Police Department. The bridge will be inspected by state officials who said they could not yet know whether or not the overpass would need to be replaced as a result of the accident. County Executive Ed Day described the damage to the structure as “a very serious situation.” Day instructed the Rockland County Highway Department and the New York State Thruway to meet to discuss possible solutions to the incident, including the bridge’s repair or
replacement. “We need to make sure that there is a plan in place to assure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians who use that roadway,” said Day. Travelers through the area are advised to use Margetts Road or Chestnut Ridge Road as alternate routes until the bridge is reopened.
$10 Toll in Sight for New Mario M. Cuomo Bridge? LESS THAN ONE WEEK after the last car rolled across the Tappan Zee Bridge, a nonpartisan citizens group recommended that the toll on the bridge be more than doubled in order to repay $2.9 billion in construction loans. The Citizens Budget Commission issued its findings on October 12th, calling for a toll hike that would have E-Z Pass tag holders paying approximately $10 to cross the new bridge, while local residents with commuter plans would pay about $7. Those recommendations run counter to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statements that the current toll would remain steady until the year 2020, although the exact amount of any toll increases after that time have yet to be released to the public. County Executive Ed Day described the suggested $10 toll as “unacceptable and unnecessary,” noting that Rockland County residents have been unfairly burdened for years, with tolls from the Tappan Zee Bridge making up one third of the New York State Thruway’s revenue. Approximately 250 million vehicles travel the 570 mile-long superhighway that extends from New York City to Niagara Falls and Northwestern Pennsylvania each year. Day noted that the $10 toll could have a devastating effect
60 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 18, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
on local businesses, including the Palisades Center which generates 23 percent of the county’s sales tax revenues. “Rockland County will not stand for a doubling of the toll on the bridge,” said Day. “Any increase in the crossing fees would hurt our residents, businesses and future economic growth in the region. We will not stand for it.” Further woes emanating from the new bridge project include concerns about a possible creosote leak into the waterway, which may have occurred as demolition crews began removing the first of thousands of pilings that surrounded the supports for the old Tappan Zee Bridge. Officials for Tappan Zee Constructors, which is tearing down the bridge, disputed reports of the creosote leak, although Rockland sheriff’s Chief William Barbara acknowledged the leak, saying it was caused by rain and not by neglect. Those words rang hollow for John Lipscomb, vice president for advocacy at Riverkeeper, which protects the safety of the Hudson River and its waters. “Creosote is not a great thing to put into an ecosystem,” said Lipscomb. “It’s not a debate. It’s not okay.”

The following recipes are all unbelievably easy. None of them will ever win awards for being exceptionally nutritious, but when you have only one hand to cook supper with because with the other you’re holding a baby, you’ll be glad to look back at these recipes and know your family will at least be eating a full meal.

COUSCOUS SOUP While I wouldn’t make this recipe on a weekly basis, it’s a good recipe to turn to when I’m desperate to put supper on the table. My children eat it so nicely and it takes seconds to prepare.
INGREDIENTS: 6 cups chicken soup, or 6 cups water and 3 T. consommé soup mix ½ bag Israeli pearl couscous
DIRECTIONS: Cook up the chicken soup, or water and consommé, until it boils. Pour in half a bag Israeli pearl couscous. Cook semicovered until couscous is soft, about 10 minutes.

PULLED CHICKEN SANDWICHES You can’t get easier or kid-friendlier than this. The Crock-pot makes the mother happy, and the taste makes the children happy. Any leftovers can be easily frozen.
INGREDIENTS: 1½ lb. chicken cutlets 1 onion, diced 1 bottle honey-garlic dressing (or any barbeque sauce of your liking)
DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine cutlets, diced onion and bottled honey-garlic dressing in a Crockpot. Cook on high for 4 hours. While the chicken mixture is still in the Crock-pot, use a potato masher to mash the chicken. It will turn into shredded chicken pieces. If you don’t have a potato masher, just use two forks to shred the chicken. 2. Serve in buns with red cabbage salad alongside or inside.

RED CABBAGE SALAD This salad pairs beautifully with the pulled chicken buns. You can also try it with a regular bag of coleslaw mix if red cabbage isn’t your thing.
INGREDIENTS: 2 bags red cabbage ½ cup oil 6 T. vinegar 6 T. sugar ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. black pepper
DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.

WHAT THEY DIDN’T SHOW YOU IN THE AQUARIUM: THE LOVE TANK WE HAVE SO MANY advantages present-day. Modern inventions have done a great deal in easing the burden of yesteryear, i.e. appliances, phones, planes, trains and cranes, etc. But while so many things in the world need less human input, love is something that can never be derived from a ma-

chine. Do you ever wonder, Why do I need to love my children? Isn’t food and water, shelter and education enough? In a nutshell, no, it is not. Human beings need love from the very start to feel safe and secure and to establish a connection with Hashem and the people around them. The way a
baby connects to his mother is how he will experience Hashem’s love. Yes, cooing and tickling your newborn teaches the baby that Hashem is a very real and loving parent. Also, the way a mother loves and cares for her child is how the child will love herself and develop her self-care skills. This is teaching a
validation, expressions of love 3. Quality time: one-on-one time with just the parent and child 4. Gifts: something made or bought especially for this person 5. Acts of service: an action done to benefit specifically this person
baby how to establish healthy attachments which she will also pass on to her generations.
The five primary love languages are: (Source: Gary Chapman) 1. Physical touch: a hug, a kiss, a massage or any human contact 2. Words of affirmation: praise,
While everyone needs every kind of love, we all have one that we identify with the most, which is how we personally absorb love to the fullest. Interestingly, we tend to show others love in our own love language as well. In reality, however, we need to figure out what their love language is and love them in their way for the majority of interactions. The other four love languages should definitely play a role as well, but to a lesser extent. This way, children learn how to receive and give love in every way, resulting in an emotionally healthy adult. I picture my home as a love tank and try to fill it in all five ways. Until around the age of four, I shower a child with every kind of love. At approximately that age, it is possible to figure out the kid’s love language by observing how they show love to others. I can then determine which kind of love they respond to the most and focus on it to nurture the child. When I keep heaping a certain love language on my child and still she seems so miserable, then we are not connecting at all, and it is possible that I need to try a different love language. Otherwise, it is like being the pushy saleslady who forces frothy tulle and intricate lace dresses on a classy customer who prefers only straight
lines and simple designs. While I may appreciate and yearn for one way of love, every individual has a right to their own taste and preference. The results will be dramatically different when executed in the right way and with the right intentions. As I try to focus on giving in the child’s love language; correspondingly, I never punish a child in that language. It can destroy a person to their core. It may cause great damage in the parent-child relationship and in the way the young one perceives Hashem, chas v’shalom. Love is never conditional and has no strings attached. I love my child although I may not always approve of his actions. When disciplining, I always make sure to be gentle and express my care and affection. “Avremele, I love you, zeeskeit. We do not hit.” When my child feels this deep, positive attachment and is sure my feelings for him will not sway with the winds, he is most capable of absorbing my chinuch. When I show my child that I understand he made a mistake, love him anyway and continue to believe that he will find his way, it is the gateway to an unbreakable bond with Hashem. I want my child to experience Hashem as He is: our compassionate Father Who always forgives us and loves us for eternity. His arms are always open wide, inviting us in. May we all find our place in His embrace. Facilitated by Tzurti Stern Perl Abramovitz is an international speaker and sought-after counselor. a side or a vegetable and chicken doesn’t feel as overwhelming as having to cook an entire meal. Also, our dear great-aunts are gracious enough to be part of the system.” They do try to match family sizes, so a mother of three shouldn’t have to cook supper for a family of eight. Each family gets two weeks’ worth of supper. IT’S NOT ALWAYS biological family that steps in. Gitty H. is part of a wonderful chassidishe community that arranges kimpeturin meals. The neshei has rotating meal coordinators who arrange a week’s worth of supper for each family. “We recently moved to Monsey,” Gitty says, “and I didn’t know anyone. Then, when I gave birth, I suddenly got these heavenly meals delivered to my home. Besides for being a total lifesaver, it helped me get to know people. I made friends and got some really amazing recipes!” TZIRY R. also lives in Monsey with-

out any family. “I never felt as lonely as I felt after my fourth baby. It was a bitter cold winter, and I had all the kids home. When my baby was just a few weeks old, I slipped and fractured a bone in my leg. When the baby cried, I felt like crying along.” And then her neighbor called Mrs. T. Green, a woman who arranges supper for kimpeturins. Just the knowledge that her family would have a wholesome meal at night was enough to get Tziry smiling again. “There’s something about knowing that someone cares about me. As I hobbled on my scooter with an aching back, some anonymous person cooked supper for me.”
THE VIZNITZ COMMUNITY in Monsey might be very large in numbers, but with their personal kimpeturin lunch program, it feels small and family-like. “I got home from the hospital,” one mother says, “and there was a message on my machine from Viznitz Bikur Cholim asking me which week I’d like to receive the
lunches. I’m shy by nature and would never call, but guess what? I soon learned that one six-pound baby can keep me busier than I thought, and the lunch that got delivered was the first thing I ate each day.” There’s so much involved in running the program. Besides for coordinating who is making lunch for whom, there are also women picking up and dropping off the lunches so they’re still hot when they get there. They also take great care that all lunches should be packed in an appealing manner. The women who cook lunch outdo themselves and only send something they’d like to receive in return. There’s so much involved in running the program, the coordinating, picking up and dropping off the lunches so they’re still hot when they get there. Mrs. Chany G., a longtime driver for the organization, says, “There’s nothing as nice and exciting as visiting new mothers and their babies!” It’s four years since she started and she wouldn’t give it up. “I still marvel at the gorgeous lunches and wrappings the ladies prepare!” The incredible feedback from both the givers and the takers make it well worth it. One woman notes, “I still make lunches even though I’m way past the stage of ever getting lunches myself. But it makes me so happy to see the young ones getting frishe kochos from my meals. It’s so important for mothers to have the energy to take care of the children.” May we all have the kochos to care for our precious children, and may we see only simchos!

“Mazel Tov! So where will the kids be staying?” That’s typically the first question everyone asks, because it’s a biggie! My conversations with my friend Perry usually start with, “So who’s staying at your house this week?” And she hardly ever disappoints me. More often than not, Perry has an extra child staying at her home. She works and lives in a small apartment, yet her heart is big, and we all know that if there’s room in the heart, there’s room in the home. Coming from a large family with many simchos, ka”h, Perry has an admirable attitude toward opening her home. It’s not always family that she hosts; her friends and neighbors often benefit too. “My kids love it!” she says. “I hardly ever have a hard time taking in a child. I’m so happy that it’s for a simchah.” While we can’t all do it as graciously as Perry does, it’s good to remember what Mrs. Esther Baila Schwartz is known for saying: “It’s bracha! And bracha is not always easy, but we have to remember that it’s bracha.” Though it’s not always easy to host children when their mother has a new baby, with an attitude of bracha and some practical tips, we should be grateful for the simchos. What can be nicer than practicing hachnosas orchim in a time of happiness? It’s also great to remember that you’re doing a chesed with Hashem’s child. So while you wipe your little guest’s nose and clean up accidents and deal with homesickness and fights and hearing the child say that their mother’s food is much better, practice saying, “L’shem mitzvas ahavas chesed.” You may as well get the most bang for your mitzvah. BUBBY STEIN eagerly awaits the birth of each grandchild because she gets to have her home full of grandchildren. Toddler? Sure! The Mommy as well? Double sure! She whips up everyone’s favorite foods and stocks up on toys. And when there’s a voch nacht?
90 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 18, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Bris? Sure! Everything for you, mammele. Don’t be jealous yet; Bubby Stein is a fictional character. And although most bubbies would wish to be like her, they are also people with limitations. Bubby Blau* says, “I love cooking, baking and hosting, but I don’t love having the children stay at my house. I hardly have help, I work out of the house and I had my share diaper-changing my own kids, baruch Hashem.” She gladly hosts the voch nacht and cooks for the bris, though — but with no toddlers around. Bubby Weiss, on the other hand, still has highschool girls at home, and they’re thrilled with the idea of having kids around. “Until…” Bubby Weiss whispers, “they touch their things.” But she has the couple make the simcha in their own house, except for when it’s a first baby. SO MANY WOMEN have heartwarming stories to share. “I have a special-needs son,” says one mother, “and I was so worried about sending him away. My friend
offered to have him, and she didn’t complain even once. He came home with a mini album full of smiles and memories of the activities she did with him. She’ll never know how much it meant to me.” Another woman shares, “I was going through a personally difficult time when I gave birth. My sisters and friends kept my kids an extra week, and although I know how hard it was on them, no one said a word.” “I’m a baalas teshuva with no family,” says Penina L., “but my neighbors are my family. Before I even had a chance to think about leaving the children, they offered to take them.”
FOR THE KIMPERTURIN
DO’S: • Do be honest about your child’s needs. • Do ask which child each person prefers to take. • Do know that even though your child is G-d’s gift to humanity, he or she can still be a handful. • Do know that even though you can kiss your child when he’s caked in mud, a different mother can’t. Make sure your child is clean and presentable when dropped off, though she’ll forgive the tatty-dressed. • Do show appreciation in little ways, such as sending along a cheap toy or game with the child, pekelech from the voch nacht or a Shabbos treat, which will mean so much to your child and the family.
DON’TS: • Don’t pressure someone into taking a child. You never know why she’s not offering. • Don’t assume your mother and mother-in-law will just “step in.” Ask, and accept their limitations. • Don’t let your child stay even one day more than you’d made up. Often, that one day can make the difference between happily done favors and feelings of resentment. • Don’t repeat things your child said about the family, for example, “I hear you allow cereal for breakfast.”
FOR THE HOSTS
DO’S: • Do pat yourself on the back! • Do take the time to prepare or do something special to make the child feel welcome. • Do treat yourself to a bought supper when the need arises; rather stay calm and happy and serve sandwiches. • Do be honest about which child you’d prefer to take. For instance, having a playmate for your child may be tempting, but if your child is competitive, is the fighting worth it? On the other hand, will it be too hard to take a child who has a different bus schedule than your own kids? Can you handle having a child who’s not toilet-trained?
DON’TS: • Don’t try to change a child; they’ll only be at your house for a little while. It’s not your job to be mechanech them. • Don’t tell the mother how difficult the child is. She can’t do much about it besides feeling unnecessarily guilty. • Don’t think that since you hosted a child, their mother will reciprocate when you need a place for yours. • Don’t count the days left until the child goes home! It may do you more harm than good. As Shevy G. says, “When I take a child for two weeks, I get fed up after only ten days. However, I once had a child for two months, and in a way it was easier than having a child for two weeks. Since I didn’t know how long the child would stay, I opened my home and heart indefinitely. It was almost a surprise when the child went home. Since then, whenever I have a child even for two weeks, I pretend to open my home indefinitely.” May we always be zoche to host oif simchos, gezunterheit!

I GLANCED OUT THE WINDOW. The sun resembled a golden medallion hanging conspicuously against a brilliant blue background, a striking contrast to the bleakness of the previous night. I held my hiccuping three-weekold baby in one arm and balanced the phone delicately between the opposite shoulder and ear. I needed some sympathy and was hoping to receive it from my mother. “How are you managing?” she inquired. “Depends what you call managing,” I replied, with no intention of humor. My mother chuckled. “You’ll get there, trust me. Wait until he’s six weeks old.” “That’s what they all say,” I moaned. Why was I feeling so lonely sometimes? So despondent? My stinging eyes and aching feet did nothing to induce optimism, and although logic and previous experience told me that time would pass and the baby would settle down, I felt so helpless during the long and sleepless nights. I wanted to shout and scream, “I don’t want to do this! I want to sleep!” A couple of evenings later, I was again in conversation with my mother. “I had a tough day at work,” she sighed. “What do you mean by ‘tough’?” I asked. “Computer aggravation,” she replied. “I spent a long while trying to figure something out, and after summoning someone to help, saw how I could have achieved the results with a few clicks of the mouse.” “Oh, that’s a shame,” I sympathized. “You know,” I said wisely, “every job comes with its frustrations.” “You’re right. You’re one hundred percent right,” my mother agreed. We finished our chat and I ended the call. I positioned myself on the couch, holding my baby, stroking his fluffy, baby-scented hair. The exchange replayed in my head. I was feeling unsettled. I felt that a connection had to be made between the subject we had been talking about and the dissatisfaction I had been feeling since my baby’s birth. And then it hit me. Job. Frustration. Every job has its frustrations. I had been very sure of what I was telling my mother. It was clear; nothing can be perfect. The first few weeks after birth are tiring, unpredictable and oftentimes frustrating. But what a precious bundle I had received! What a privileged occupation! To care and love, and yes, occasionally even exhaust myself in order to raise the next generation of our holy nation. I stroked his velvety skin and thought of his two older sisters, practically babies themselves. There would be hard days, even extremely challenging days, days I might want to cry out in frustration. But I would try my utmost to find a few seconds to daven that Hashem should remind me in those moments: “This is your job, and you can do it.” I would strain to hear the whisper in my ear. This is precisely what I was sent into this world to do. The thought relaxed me. To be a happy, nurturing mother is a job, a challenging one. It takes patience, lots of it, and strength. I felt grateful for the reminder that this pure, innocent being is more important than any other endeavor right now. My job is to find that fortitude and resilience, to hone my middos even when fatigued. And the heavenly reward will be incomparable to the money that lands in my bank account at the end of a working month. My baby had fallen asleep, his head lying gently on my arm. I could feel the slight rise and fall of his chest. My eyelids drooped. There’s one bonus in this job called motherhood. Sleeping on the job, kids permitting, is most definitely allowed.

What does royalty get wheeled in? The British tradition is to transport the youngest members of the royal family in the British-made Silver Cross pram. It’s not surprising that Silver Cross branded their products “The Rolls-Royce of Prams.” In 2013, Prince George of Cambridge was treated to a Balmoral Silver Cross pram, which was customized to his mother’s specifications.
THE FIVE MOST EXPENSIVE STROLLERS ON EARTH
Silver Cross Special Edition Rose Gold Balmoral Pram — $61,000 A limited number of these strollers have been made to date. Each pram is handcrafted and the gold meticulously polished. This pram doesn’t fold down at all and needs enough storage space to house its generous proportions (probably not an issue for anyone who can afford it!).
Young Versace White Quilted Travel System — $6,000 Silver Cross Balmoral Pram — $4,400 The make favored by British royalty
Only 800 of these Italian-made sets, which include bassinet, stroller and bag, were manufactured, and they are mostly sold out.
Silver Cross Surf Aston Martin Edition — $3,000 Bugaboo Donkey Twin Navy Blue Collection – $2,069
William Kent, a landscape architect, invents the first baby carriage for the 3rd Duke of Devonshire to transport his little ones in. It’s designed with a harness to be pulled by a goat or small pony. Only the wealthiest parents can afford this shellshaped early stroller. By the mid-1800s, handles are added to allow parents to grab onto and pull the stroller behind them. Tall and unstable, babies are prone to falling out.

1848:
1771:
A TIMELINE ON WHEELS Innovator Charles Burton changes the design, and parents now push the children in front of them instead of pulling them from behind. It takes a while to get accepted in the U.S.; some parents run them into pedestrians while getting used to the new method of transporting babies. Burton takes his innovation to the U.K., where the “pram” becomes popular.
KNOW YOUR LINGO:
• In Great Britain, a pushchair or buggy is the forward-facing stroller used for young children up to about three years of age. Pushchair was the popular term until the 1980s, when the framed Maclaren buggy hit the scene. • There are plenty of prams in the U.K. too. Short for perambulator, a pram is heavier and larger and is usually designed for infants. • In the U.S., carriage is an outdated word in reference to strollers, and will usually bring to mind the thing that’s attached to a horse. To avoid ambiguity, use only baby carriage, and not carriage alone.
BEST-SELLING BABY STROLLERS IN MONSEY
SILVER CROSS WAVE $1,299 This luxury pram, made of the highest quality material can be converted to a double stroller, and will last for years. BABYZEN YOYO $495
BUGABOO CAMELEON LIMITED EDITION $1,099.99 Versatile for all stages and chic, this is the #1 best-seller on the market. BUGABOO BEE 5 $729 Lightweight and folds easily, this chic stroller is available in many designs and colors. SILVER CROSS WAVE $1,299
This stunning baby carriage with chrome accents boasts a one-hand compact fold, and comfy reversible seat.
Beautiful bassinet/seat stroller that can easily be converted to a double stroller.
A reversible stroller is patented by William H. Richardson, so a child can now face either direction. The late 19th century is also when double strollers appear on the scene. The earliest models are either extra wide or extra long.
After his daughter complains to him about the difficulty of lugging around a pram, Owen Maclaren, an aeronautical engineer, invents the first umbrella stroller. His aluminum frame is compact and lightweight, and he goes on to found Maclaren.
1980s:
MAMAS AND PAPAS OCARRO $670
1965:
1889:
At just 13 pounds., it’s the lightest travel stroller around, yet extremely durable. Best of all, this can be taken on a plane as a carry-on.
JUVENILE DESIGN AND TOYS
BRAUN’S JUVENILE FURNITURE BUGABOO CAMELEON The popular designer baby carriage is a pleasure to wheel and accommodates babies of all ages. JOOLZ At great value for your money, this versatile stroller gives the child a very smooth ride. UPPABABY CRUZ This great-quality stroller is sleek and compact and very reasonably priced.
Phil Baechler replaces his baby carriage wheels with bicycle wheels, and after a few tweaks in design, the jogger is born.
1981:
BABYBUG BOUTIQUE
Maclaren releases its first Triple Seat Umbrella Fold, introducing the first carriage to hold three children.

Why is the door to the boiler room open? Maybe the blackout was not so innocent?
Here comes the manager. He’ll want to check if I’m in my office. I’d better get there.
How do I get out of here without them noticing? They can’t discover my mission!
No one is here. I’m just being paranoid.
The room looks empty, but I’ll go in and doublecheck.
Everything’s okay. The closets are closed and the room is empty. We probably forgot to close the door the last time we were here. I’ll go up to Gavriel’s office to get the key.
I’ll jump out the back window to the porch that connects our offices, and then I’ll go in through my window. He’s going up to my office to get the key… I’d better get there before he does!
I’ll crawl close to the building so they don’t see me through the windows. h…. hh h.. Ah hh A

1. Determine in which community or town they want to live for the foreseeable future. 2. Contact a mortgage professional to see where they stand financially. This will establish whether or not their income can handle a down payment and whether their credit is good enough. If the mortgage professional finds they are ready to purchase a home, they should then... 3. Contact a local realtor to get an idea of what is available to match their budget.
Real Estate A New Addition — A New House? WHEN IS IT TIME TO MOVE, and when is it time to buy a home? Should homeowners in need of a larger place sell their current home and buy a new one, or is it better to add on to one’s current home? These questions usually come up when there are major life changes. These include finally seeing monetary success after being self-employed for a few years or marrying off children and dealing with an empty nest. For a younger family, however, very often the major life change is a new baby. Recently, I received a call from a client who had twins and found that their home was too small. Similarly, a few years ago I got a call from a client who had triplets and found that their current home couldn’t accommodate three additional children and the 24-hour help they required. One of my own daughters cost me to the tune of over six figures when I made a three-bedroom addition after she was born because I had no room for her crib! For these families, a new addition does not only mean preparing for a kiddush or bris and accommodations for the baby and all the paraphernalia she comes along with; major decisions have to be made regarding housing. Let us explore the options. If the family is renting, they need to decide whether to buy a home or rent a larger apartment. Here are the first three steps they should take:

For a younger family, however, very often the major life change is a new baby.
If they are not yet ready to buy a home, they should put a mortgage plan in place so that they can work toward the goal of homeownership. In the meantime, if they cannot manage in their current apartment, they most likely should rent a larger home. If the family owns a home but is in need of a larger place, they need to determine whether they like their current neighborhood and property. If they don’t and want to move, here are the first three steps they should take: 1. Contact a local realtor, and after determining his or her fee, finding out the current value of their home. They
should ask what the home can sell for if it is priced aggressively for a quick sale, and whether or not they should do work on the home or property to spruce it up, which may encourage a quicker and more worthwhile sale. 2. Contact a mortgage professional to find out if they qualify for a new home purchase. An analysis of the closing costs on the sale of the home and for the purchase should be laid out clearly so that the family is clear on the cost and how much money they will have available for the purchase. 3. Execute a plan, with contingencies. Do they need to sell? Can they move and not sell their current home? Based on this information, they should have the realtor send them listings that are in their price range so that they are clear on what homes are available. What if the family likes their current neighborhood and wants to consider renovating their home? Here are the first three steps they should take: 1. Contact a contractor to get an idea of cost, time and whether the home can be occupied during renovations. 2. Contact a mortgage professional to find out their mortgage options. They should review the costs of the loan, the renovations and, if necessary, a temporary rental. 3. Contact a local realtor to make sure that the addition being planned makes sense from a resale perspective.
