// Talk of Town

ENJOYING HASHEM’S WORLD I want to take a few minutes to thank you for the time and effort that you put in twice a year when you publish a list of attractions. It must be tedious to update all information, make sure all phone numbers, hours, etc. are updated, make sure the descriptions are accurate, etc. The effort is obvious in the final product. I have been using your list of attractions from when it first appeared in your pages. Your Excursions booklet is in the glove compartment of our car, and we have visited many places after using your booklet to figure out where to go and how to get there. Hashem created a beautiful world for us to enjoy, and you’ve certainly helped in getting us to these places and making us aware of their existence. Please keep it up and keep publishing it. With much appreciation, D.Z.

SAFETY ISSUES REGARDING HITCHHIKING To all those well-meaning drivers out there: Please stop doing the questionable act of chesed by offering hitches! Aside from the fact that it’s against the law, it’s extremely dangerous for the vehicles coming in right behind you. There are several areas in town that seem to be popular hitchhiking spots, and I wouldn’t be surprised if accidents have already occurred in those areas: immediately after making the right turn from Maple Avenue onto Monsey Boulevard; after the turn from Maple Avenue corner Howard Drive at Park Lane; immediately after making the right turn from Maple Avenue onto Suzanne Drive; immediately turning from Route 59 onto Robert Pitt Drive; at Charles Lane corner Francis Place (a very heavy traffic area); and at the corners along Route 306. Naturally, there are many more “hot spots” that cause the car following the hitching car to slam on the brakes and hope the cars behind have enough time to do the same! I know that all of you who are walking long distances appreciate the hitches you’re getting, but I sincerely hope you’re not leaving your house (especially in inclement weather) with the thought of your walk being shortened via a hitch. And no, I don’t know what it’s like to walk

six miles uphill with a double stroller through a foot of snow with six shopping bags, but setting out on a journey that’s beyond your physical capabilities doesn’t give you the right to endanger the lives of others. Additionally, in the “olden days,” the way to get taxi service was to call the taxi service and wait for the car to arrive. Nowadays, cabs can be stopped on the road and negotiations are made while traffic slowly backs up behind the prospective customer and the cab. I have also noticed school buses picking up stray walkers. A school bus may only pick up and discharge those students or personnel who are on their given route. Please, everyone — our town’s traffic congestion is a big enough problem. Let’s not add physical safety to the equation. Please note the law on hitchhiking in the State of New York: New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1157: Pedestrians soliciting rides, or business.(a) No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride, or to solicit from or sell to an occupant of any vehicle. CUSTOM-MADE FOR ME With my kids farmed out at a few kind-hearted sisters and friends and a fussy newborn cradled in my arms, reading this week’s Monsey View was a special treat. Thank you for your helpful pointers addressing both the mother’s and host’s point of view regarding kids away from home and for the inspiration of the privileged occupation we are zoche to hold. I was also lucky enough to receive a steaming hot, nourishing meal from a friend (of Hungarian descent!), and yes, I appreciated it immensely! N.E. EDITOR’S BULLETIN: Due to the many phone calls we received with inquiries for contact information for the organizations providing meals for mothers of newborns, we’ve compiled a list of resources. Mrs. Green — meals for kimpeturins: 845-352-2845 Mrs. Fuchs — lunches for kimpeturins: 845-352-2823 Spira — sells well-priced suppers: 845-371-1362 For additional kimpeturin resources: Ezer L’Yoldes: 718-483-8400 In addition, Bobov, Tzemach Viznitz and Viznitz N’shei have kimpeturin meal programs for their members. Any additional information is welcome.

I HAD BEEN OUT doing some errands and soon found myself at my friend’s house helping her organize her basement. While working, my cell phone rang. It was my new neighbor, calling to check whether I was home because her water had stopped working while she was making supper. She wanted to know if mine was working, because she wasn’t sure whether it was a street issue or her own plumbing. I told her I wasn’t home and that it had been working right before I left. However, I offered to give her the number to my combination lock so she could go into my house to see for herself if my water was up and running. She went in while we were still on the phone. Once in my house, she found that the water pressure was weak and wanted to know if it was always that way. I told her that I didn’t think so, but being that I wasn’t there, I couldn’t really say. I suggested she call one of our other neighbors who would probably be home. She called two and I quickly called one. It seemed the water pressure in two of the neighbors’ homes was also low. The third one found it to be the same as always. Baruch Hashem, twenty minutes later, her water returned. I found it amazing that Hashem didn’t want me to experience the low pressure so He had me leave my house right at that time. However, He did want me to know what I had missed so He had my neighbor call me so I would be aware of His chesed to me.

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:

EDITION CHAPTER 10

By: Basya Kovacs

50 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 25, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

AFTER SUKKOS, many of my clients asked me how they stacked up compared to the others in terms of yom tov weight loss or gain. So I kept a tally for the first few days after yom tov. The results were interesting and very telling. About 60 percent of my clients maintained their pre-yom tov weight within a pound. Twenty percent lost more than a pound, and the other 20 percent gained more than a pound. Of the 20 percent of people who gained weight, only a handful of them gained a significant amount (four pounds or more). Granted, it is only Wednesday after yom tov as I write this, so the results aren’t all in yet, but based on the 100 or so clients whom I have seen in the past four days, the data is pretty significant. (As an aside, I believe that a gain of one to two pounds over the week of Sukkos is very manageable and reasonable because it can be lost in a week — approximately the same amount of time it took to put the weight on.) To me, the statistics above attest to the beauty of our program. The fact that almost all of my clients were able to maintain their weight, or even lose weight through the yom tov season, a time of year replete with over 20 gourmet seudos, boggles the mind. But at the same time, it doesn’t shock me. This is what Nutrition by Tanya is all about. People inquiring about our program often ask me what our diet “trick” is. Do we cut carbs? Load up on fiber? Drastically cut calories? In other words, what is our plan based on? In all honesty, the brilliance of our plan is in its simplicity. It is designed not as a diet, but as a way of life. We don’t “ban” food. We don’t cut out full food groups. We allow carbohydrates. We allow bread. We allow pizza, sushi and ice cream and even small amounts of

chocolate. We don’t cut out all white flours or all sugars. Rather, we provide a plan that is, for lack of a better word, normal. Sustainable. Doable. Forever! Which means that on our plan you can enjoy all the normal foods that you love, in moderation. It also means that you can go out to eat, celebrate a yom tov, participate in a simchah, and go on vacation — all without feeling the need to go “off your diet.” Sure, there are plans out there that are stricter and work faster, but they are designed as temporary measures in order to knock off pounds quickly. And of course they are virtually impossible to stick to during the yom tov season. Our philosophy is the opposite. Don’t do anything extreme, and for that matter, don’t do anything that you can’t see yourself doing for the long term. Otherwise the weight loss is, by the very definition, temporary. So the “magic” of our diet is to eat portion-controlled, filling, nourishing food on a very regular schedule to maximize your metabolism and keep it at peak performance. And do this without depriving yourself of the foods you love. That’s it. We customize your plan to your likes and tastes, making sure that each meal, snack and treat is nourishing and delicious. We even work in occasional “cheats” because the idea is to be able to stay on the plan forever. (For example, donuts on Chanuka — less than seven weeks away! Woohoo!) We also help our clients structure their meals to work with their daily schedule depending on their lifestyle. For clients who have tried every diet out there, this plan is often the first time they feel like they have found something they can stick to. And stick to it they do! Hence the amazing postyom tov tally.

Federal Charges Filed Against Montvale for Blocking Eruv Expansion FIRST IT WAS Upper Saddle River. Then it was Mahwah. Now it is Montvale’s turn to be slapped with a federal lawsuit, saying that the northern New Jersey township is in violation of the Constitution’s First Amendment because of its refusal to allow the Bergen Rockland Eruv Association to attach pipes that would serve as lechis onto township telephone poles. The Rockland Journal News reported that the eruv association obtained permission from Orange and Rockland to place PVC pipes on the poles in order to extend the 26-mile Monsey eruv in July 2015. The pipes were to be installed on 27 poles on Chestnut Ridge Road and Summit Avenue, and a 2015 statement by then-Mayor Roger Fyfe noted that barring any safety concerns, there appeared to be “little role for Montvale to play” in the eruv project. While the eruv association rented equipment for the in-

stallation and made arrangements with local police to supervise the work this summer, a stop-work order issued by Mayor Michael Ghassali on July 10 brought the entire project to a halt. According to the lawsuit, the lechis are prohibited because they fall under a borough ordinance concerning “litter” in the township. Rabbi Chaim Steinmetz of the eruv committee said that he had been hopeful that meetings with township officials would have cleared up all of the township’s concerns. “It’s sad that we couldn’t settle this,” said Rabbi Steinmetz. The lawsuit also noted that both Upper Saddle River and Mahwah initially had no objections to the eruv, but when residents began expressing concern about the eruv this summer, the townships called for the eruv’s removal, saying it violated local zoning laws.

Cuomo Bans Elephants from Performances THE NEXT TIME an animal show comes to town, it may be elephant-free, thanks to a new law signed by Governor Cuomo that prohibits elephants from being used for entertainment purposes throughout the state. The Elephant Protection Act goes into effect in late 2019 and is designed to prevent cruelty to animals, noting that elephants used for entertainment purposes suffer “physical and psychological harm due to the living conditions to which they are subjected” and typically live only half as long as their counterparts in the wild. The new law carries a $1,000 fine for violators and prohibits elephants from being used in circuses, carnivals, parades or trade shows. Animal rights activists have long protested the use of elephants for entertainment, prompting the discontinuation of some elephant shows in 2016, reported The Journal News. Elephants weren’t the only four-legged creatures making headlines in recent days. Police officers in the Boro Park area chased a loose bull near the Prospect Park Expressway

for nearly two miles, ultimately tranquilizing the animal in Prospect Park after a several-hour-long standoff. The bull, which had escaped from a nearby slaughterhouse, was given to an animal sanctuary in New Jersey, according to BoroPark24.

CREAM OF LIMA SOUP This is a nice change from the standard split pea soup both in taste and look. The blended lima beans form a white, creamy base.

INGREDIENTS: 1 16-ounce package large lima beans 3 T. oil

1 large turnip 1 yelllow squash

2 large onions

1½ pounds carrots

3 cloves garlic

1 red pepper

1 small knob celery

3 T. salt

1 large parsnip

Chop onion and garlic in food processor and place in a 10-quart pot with oil. Allow to sauté for 5–10 minutes. 3. Using the fine shredder, shred celery, parsnip, turnip and squash. SO, YOUR TENANT’S NUMBER IS ON the caller ID. Again. And wouldn’t it be interesting to note that it happens every time after it rains? “Oh, hi, Mrs. G.” Cough. “Um. The wall under your porch door? It’s really wet.” Yeah. Those leaks. Better call the contractor again. Or save some money and do it yourself. Really! It’s not as intimidating as it sounds. A bit of detective work, a trip to your local home improvement store and some fun activity is all it takes to waterproof your home and shield it from the elements. The first thing you’ll want to do is figure out where the leaking water is coming from, as the trick is to try and stop it at the source. This can actually prove to be rather complicated, as water will not necessarily run in a straight line and can enter and flow through small cracks. Hint: Unless under extreme pressure, water will always travel down, so start at the top, checking windows and doors within the leaking vicinity. In basement leaks, it is important to do sleuthing around the house at the foundation. Whenever it rains or snows, water coming down will look for a place to go and be absorbed. Most contractors will build foundations with a plan on how to direct the water away from the house, but not always will it work perfectly in all areas. This happens often in older homes that have settled, or have had tree roots, landscaping or different elements shifting the surroundings of the house. Let’s start with a foundation check.

October 25, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 75 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

1. 1. GRADING. To ensure that there is positive grading around the foundation, check for pooling and puddles all around the house. Positive grading slopes away from your home, directing storm water away from your foundation. Negative grading slopes toward your home, directing storm water toward your foundation. An area with a collection of water at the foundation will indicate that water isn’t properly guided away from the wall and needs to be fixed immediately. Scenario 1: The house is surrounded by concrete/asphalt. It is recommended to hire a professional to grade the cement appropriately. If you’re the extreme do-it-yourself type, this can be fixed by making a batch of store-bought cement mix and pouring a slab that will direct water flow away from the foundation. Scenario 2: The house is surrounded by soil. Fixing the grading can be as simple as shoveling soil toward your house or bringing in soil from another part of your property. Be careful not to cover existing siding as this can cause a number of problems, like inviting termites for dinner, to name one. If you don’t have much soil around your home and you must add soil from an exterior source, use topsoil or mulch. Do not use sand, because water flows through sand very easily and can turn

a bad situation worse. 2. CRACKS. Cracks in the concrete are the culprits of a large percentage of basement leaks. Once again, check all around the foundation of the house, especially around pipes, railing posts, etc. Chances are, if there’s one crack, there’s probably another. The inspection should be thorough and not stopped when one crack is discovered. To determine whether the discovered crack is the culprit, run a garden hose for 10 to 15 minutes on that area and see if there’s any moisture inside. (This is also a good way to test grading when it hasn’t rained for a while.) While this can be a good test, take note that not all cracks will leak immediately, so if the crack is in the vicinity of a previous leaking spot, it’s wise to fix it. Filling cracks is a simple job with a sealant that can be bought in any home improvement store. The brand Master Seal has options for smaller cracks or larger cracks and dries into a hard, rubber-like substance that seals cracks quite effectively. Many more sealant options are available in local stores in a tube or as a mix. 3. GUTTERS. When was the last time you checked your gutters? They are your home’s first line of defense against water problems and should be cleaned two to four times a year, depending on your lo-

Another option for gaps is a piece of angle siding secured with silicone. The areas where wooden decks connect to the house, which have missing or damaged siding, will also need to be covered with flashing to prevent water penetration. So take the time to get to know your house from the outside while the weather is still mild. You won’t be so thrilled to hunt down those cracks and gaps in the middle of a downpour. Waterproof now, and stay dry all winter!

90 / THE MONSEY VIEW

The Atlantic Hurricane Season occurs from June 1 to November 30. Although past its peak, in this rainy month of Cheshvan, we explore this phenomenon and how we here in Monsey were affected by floodwaters over the past two decades.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 91

In light of the warnings, Monsey residents stocked up on food, flashlights, candles and non-perishables, leaving the store shelves bare. Residents were urged by police to stay indoors and off the streets. Fallen trees and powerlines throughout Rockland County left thousands without electricity, and restoration was only possible once the winds weakened, leaving schools closed for the better part of a week as Orange and Rockland faced one of the worst storms in terms of power outages. Fallen trees also caused significant damage to homes. Traveling in the days after Hurricane Sandy came with its own challenges; the gas shortage had people waiting in line for hours and there was a three-passenger minimum to cross the East River bridges. Damage all over also caused many traffic delays. Endless lines could also be seen at Home Depot and Lowe’s where thousands of dollars’ worth of generators were purchased.

NECHAMA S. REMEMBERS: My husband and I spent an extended weekend following Superstorm Sandy in Brooklyn due to a family simchah. Our hachnasas orchim suite was located just below ground, and our window had the perfect view of the shoes of the passersby. On Friday morning, I woke up to loud voices and a long line of impatiently shuffling feet right outside our window! Each pair of shoes also came along with bright red gasoline containers, and that told me what was going on: A gas station that still had some gasoline was located one lot to the left of our building, and it seemed like all of Brooklyn had turned up to get some of that suddenly very precious commodity.

BATYA F. REMEMBERS: It was Monday, the day before Sandy made landfall in the Northeast, and we had to be in Manhattan to take care of something that couldn’t wait. We were so worried about being unable to travel that we booked a hotel room for Sunday night and traveled in the day before. By Monday morning the city was eerily quiet, and we were relieved to get back to Monsey before anything got serious. We couldn’t resist a five-minute stop at the lookout point off the Palisades to see the choppy Hudson water looking like the Niagara River rapids.

92 / THE MONSEY VIEW

RUCHY R. REMEMBERS: Having a baby a day before Sandy touched down gave me the opportunity to stay in the hospital throughout the storm, but I was nervous about leaving my husband and toddler to fend for themselves during the hurricane, so home I went. Big mistake. Let me just tell you, there is nothing quite like changing newborn pampers by candlelight in a 50-degree house… Within a day of losing electricity due to the storm, we’d packed up and headed into Brooklyn, where we were shuffled between family members for the week leading up to the bris. When the bris was over, we headed home, eager to catch some much-needed rest, but it wasn’t to be. All that running around had caused both baby and I to catch an RSV-like virus, and we spent the next six days in Westchester watching the baby struggle for his life. Meanwhile, I felt horrible and tried sleeping on the folding couch in between residents poking their heads in every few minutes… The moral of the story? Kimpeturins and newborns should not be running around! And avoid hurricanes when possible.

Even though it was downgraded from hurricane status by the time it made landfall in New York, Tropical Storm Irene left destruction and heartache in its wake. The winds of the storm downed power lines across Monsey, leaving thousands of local residents without electricity for days, and much to our deep sorrow, taking three precious lives from our midst. The rainfall caused Lake Suzanne and its connected brooks to overflow onto the streets, causing flooding in many parts of our neighborhood, and some residents went out in boats upon the temporary lakes when the winds abated.

M.W. REMEMBERS: Observing Lake Suzanne’s dam off Vincent Road was like watching a powerful, non-stop waterfall. Upon investigating where all that water was headed to, I found the brook on Francis Place overflowing and its contents gushing out onto the streets and pooling in great big puddles and then ponds on the roads. One resident was soon found afloat with his children in a canoe, traversing the roads using the only method of transportation that could handle the flood.

Tropical storms and hurricanes were originally referred to by name and location, often causing confusion. 1953: The United States began using easily remembered, short female names to identify storms, working their way through the alphabet. 1978: The U.S. started using both female and male names for its storms.

No meetings are held to name storms as they are predicted. There’s a predetermined list, established by the World Meteorological Organization, which gets rotated every six years. Names on the list get changed only when a storm is so severe in terms of damage and/or casualties that the future use of the same name would be inappropriate. List of Recently Retired Atlantic Storm Names: 2017: Harvey and Irma are most likely up for retirement 2016: Matthew, Otto 2015: Erika, Joaquin 2013: Ingrid

2012: Sandy 2011: Irene 2010: Igor, Tomas 2008: Gustav, Ike, Paloma 2007: Dean, Felix, Noel

2005: Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan, Wilma 2004: Charley, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne

Storms are named in the order of the alphabet, with the exception of letters Q, U, X, Y and Z. In the event that the amount of hurricanes per year exceeds the 21 names on the list, additional storms take on the names of the Greek alphabet. This happened in 2005, when during the busiest hurricane season of 28 storms, the last six were named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta. As for the missing name? One storm that year went unnamed.

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW

After a storm swept through Rockland County, flash flooding turned many streets in Monsey into virtual three-foot lakes. Residents found themselves wading through the muddy water to get home on a Friday afternoon. Especially hard hit was Rita Avenue, Phyllis Terrace, Ralph Boulevard, Stonehouse Drive and areas where Suzanne Lake runs off. Children donned rain gear and frolicked in their avenues-turned-swimmingpools, while others grappled with the scattered power outages throughout the county, trapped vehicles and flooded homes and buildings.

P H O T O C R E D I T: V I N N E W S

RUCHY L. REMEMBERS: It was Friday afternoon, and I was rushing home from the grocery to complete my last-minute Shabbos tasks. I was stunned by the sight that awaited me. The entire street was flooded, and three feet of murky water pooled across the block and covered our entire front lawn and driveway. In disbelief, I watched the floodwater, my door out of reach, my Shabbos food partly raw in the shopping bags I held. When the water wouldn’t let up, I looked around to make sure I wasn’t being watched, took the plunge, crossed the river and was finally able to complete my Shabbos preparations and wash all that wet laundry I’d created.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 95

To be upgraded to a hurricane, a tropical storm must have maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph. If winds are greater than 110 mph, it is classified as a major hurricane.

The Saffir-Simpson scale measures hurricanes in five categories, based on wind speed and intensity. This scale is only used for storms forming in the Atlantic Ocean and Northern Pacific Ocean east of the date line.

Tropical cyclones and typhoons are the same weather phenomena as hurricanes; they are just named so when occurring in the Northwest Pacific.

The eye of the storm is the center of the winds of a hurricane or cyclone, where there is mostly calm weather.

Floyd’s floods dumped a whole bunch of rain on Monsey and surrounding areas, closing schools and disrupting electrical service. The floodwaters, which rushed out of brooks and even sewer manholes everywhere, washed away cars and anything lying around outside. Trees fell on cars, homes and powerlines, and trees and branches were seen floating downstream. Rescue missions were executed as people were saved from floating cars and pulled out of their homes by boat. It took six years and over 14 million dollars to repair roads and culverts and rebuild numerous stream banks.

I AM STARING AT A BLANK PIECE OF PAPER (actually, a blank screen), wondering what to write about Chodesh Cheshvan. That just about sums up the problem. After the rollercoaster ride of Chodesh Tishrei, known as Yare’ach Ha’eisanim, the Month of Giants, it feels like the ride suddenly stopped and the music just went quiet. What now? To compound the problem, this month bears the epithet “mar” — bitter. What exactly is the point of that? Are we really meant to go around feeling bitter now that yom tov is over? Rav Yehuda Leib Wittler, a prominent rav and mashgiach ruchani in Manchester, U.K., gave a beautiful insight into what this chodesh is all about. Tishrei was indeed the Yare’ach Ha’eisanim, filled with yomim tovim that required our utmost — physically, emotionally and spiritually. From the teshuvah of the Yomim Nora’im to the joy of Simchas Torah, we were uplifted, awed, inspired and enthused (not to mention exhausted). But we had little time to reflect on how we will be affected and changed in the long term by what we were experiencing. In such a fast-moving, action-packed month, it is difficult to implement lasting change; to actually live differently. For that, what we need is Chodesh Cheshvan. A month with nothing on the program as far as yomim tovim are concerned. A month of menuchas hanefesh, of calm and serenity, in which we can internalize the inspiration of Tishrei. Whether it was the call of the shofar that spoke to you or the joy of the Simchas Beis Hasho'evah that captivated you, Cheshvan is the time to reflect on that inspiration, to acquire it, and most importantly, to translate it into action — not to allow it to remain on the outside in a distant and soon-to-be-forgotten haze. In an analogy from the halachos of kashrus, Rav Wittler quoted a principle of melichah — salting. While a piece of meat is undergoing melichah, the blood, which is forbidden, is on its way out of the meat. Why does it not become immediately reabsorbed? The answer is, “aydi d’tarid l’miflat lo bala” — while the meat is busy exuding the blood, it will not absorb anything. In a similar way, while we are preoccupied with the manifold aspects of the yomim tovim, we may be too busy to really absorb their implications for our lives. Entering an apparently empty, barren month after the warmth and activity of Tishrei may be

Then comes Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, and He turns around to you and hands over the controls. Now you have to pilot the plane.

a bitter pill to swallow, but this is what makes the entire Tishrei experience worthwhile. There’s another aspect of how Cheshvan enables us to maintain the spiritual gains of Tishrei. For this, we’ll use another analogy. Let’s say you are training as a pilot. You attend flying school and learn a lot of theory. You then go on flights with your trainer to see how it is actually done. Now, you’re ready to take to the air for the first time. Any pilots out there may want to correct me, but I surmise that you may feel more than a little nervous... Do I actually have to control this thing in midair?! However, there’s only one way to learn to fly, and that’s by actually becoming airborne and getting the experience. Chodesh Elul is like attending flying school. You get ready and learn the theory. In Tishrei you take to the air with your Instructor, Hashem, at the controls. He takes you over dramatic terrain and through multiple weather systems. He pilots you to great heights and through massive changes. Then comes Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, and He turns around to you and hands over the controls. Now you have to pilot the plane. No longer is Hashem taking you on an epic spiritual journey; you are back into your normal routine, doing the things you do every day, but you’ve got to do it differently now. You’re in the cockpit, and it’s your job to fly the plane just as you’ve been taught in your training period of Elul and Tishrei. Now you have to implement those changes that He inspired you to make, reach those heights that He taught you to reach. Chodesh Cheshvan is your real test. In that sense, Elul and Tishrei were merely the preparation. That is why Sefer Nachlas Shivah says that the epithet “mar” means master. This Chodesh is when you take the controls and assume responsibility for your spiritual fulfillment. The moment of assuming control may be bitter and uncertain, but it’s what makes you master of your own destiny. And don’t worry, your Instructor — Hashem — isn’t going away; He’s staying right on board with you — just turn to Him for guidance every step of the way. Marcheshvan is like that empty sheet of paper; it’s blank, it’s disconcerting. But it’s what gives you the mastery to achieve great things and take to the skies.

have seen those ads and read those stories. I never believed in them. It seemed too easy: pay some money and get miraculous results. Maybe it worked for other people, but not for

me. Until… it was my son in the hospital. My son with cancer. My son fighting for his life. I felt so alone. So desperate. So hopeless. And I remembered those stories. And they gave me hope. And so I signed up my son with Tehillim Kollel, hoping that the miracles could and would apply to our family too, that they do indeed have a special zchus, as they davened at the holy sites of tzaddikim for our yeshua. Now, you may think we are just another story. But we are not. It’s real. My son. My son. My son was cured! And now, I not only believe. I know. The power of Tehillim is very personal and very real in my life.

Rainy Day

Perspectives DEAFENING CLAPS OF THUNDER propel me to the window. My heart expands, Hashem’s love spreading through my entire being as thunder blasts the world and lightning breaks through the clouds. I feel the power and the security of Hashem’s heavy showers upon His children. I feel cared for and protected in my home, surrounded by His love as He spills a rushing cascade of rain onto His world. The phone’s ring startles me. It is my sister-in-law, checking in. “I can’t stop looking at the rain,” I gush. “Isn’t it beautiful?” The rhythmic beating on my awning is so comforting. I love it. “Do you really like the rain?” Sarah asks. I can’t see her face, but I hear disbelief in her voice. “I love it,” I say softly. I don’t care if she thinks I’m crazy. “You’re lucky you don’t have to deal with a flooded basement after every storm.” When I last visited her home, I remember seeing their newly laid linoleum lifting from the floor. Soaked books that had fallen off the shelves told me about the flooding, and so did a few pairs of pants and a shirt that were stored in the basement. They were hung lazily over the banister, dripping with water. “You know what goes on here every time it rains,” Sarah says. “I just bought this house, and I have to call someone down every time there’s flooding to fix the pipes. It’s such a struggle! Five floods and hundreds of dollars spent; you’d think the problem would be gone! Every time it rains, I start all over again.” I hear the desperation in her voice. I’m still sitting, crouched by the window, willing myself to enjoy the rain, but some of my pleasure has subsided. I suddenly understand that just like I like the rain and others hate it, it can present a challenge. “Tell me, how am I supposed to deal with this?” “Well,” I reply, “I really don’t know. It’s challenging.” I am absorbing the noise of the thunder and enjoying the magic of the lightning. I remember a discussion I had with a friend in seminary. We were discussing rain, and I made sure to express how much I loved it. I told her that I especially love huddling under an umbrella, laughing while running in the rain and feeling protected in the storm. My friend, Blimy, ever the philosophical one, thought for a moment and then posed her question: “Do you like challenges?” I don’t know if it was the folly of youth that made me answer “yes” or if I really did like challenges at that point. Maybe I just wanted to impress Blimy. Now, a few years older and wiser, I realize that it’s not necessarily the challenges in life that I appreciate, but the sense of security that I have as a Yid, knowing that no matter what comes my way, Hashem’s loving umbrella of security is around me. Rain, like challenges, is a reminder of that.

“I LOVE YOU; I HATE YOU!” The Sibling Saga RAISE YOUR HAND if you have ever exhaled noisily to the tune of, “Oh my goodness! Can these kids get along?!” (Oh wow, are those my hands up there reaching for the sky? And a spare foot for good mea-

114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 25, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

sure?) Sibling rivalry is as common as teenage pimples, if only more exasperating. What is uncommon is the perception that this is normal and healthy. While we don’t encourage

misbehavior, understanding that healthy children in healthy environments feel safe to act out is helpful in processing and dealing with this issue. When my kids are hurting each other, physically or verbally, I find it easiest and fastest to focus on the victim. That would look like, “Oh, sweetie, you’re hurt! Come, let’s put a band-aid and give you a great, big kiss.” Or, “Yitzy called you a baby? You must feel so embarrassed. Come here; tell me all about it.” The kid who just hurt his sibling may also tag along and want attention from Mommy, and I can say, “Sure, I’d love to, but first I need to take care of Rochel Leah because she was hurt, the poor thing.” The child will learn that bullying others is to his disadvantage; he will be missing

out on precious quality time that is now spent on his victims, and he will learn to seek positive attention instead. I will also catch the child in a calm moment and say, “Look, Yitzy, you wanted to tease your sister, but you didn’t! What a gibor!” On the flip side, I tell the child that was hurt, “Shaming is not okay. Every time someone makes fun of you and you don’t answer back,

you get so much s’char!” Teaching young ones how to improve their communication is a great tool and may prevent many a needless fight. Basic instinct drives children to raise their fists and lash out with angry namecalling. I call out in a firm, easygoing manner, “No names. No shaming. Use your words and not your hands.” Or, “We don’t threaten. Say what you need.” Creating short little songs with this message may help kids lighten up, and the refrain will accompany them long into adulthood and probably to the next generation of siblings. For instance: We don’t fight, Shame or bite, Using words is always right! I find repeating this basic rule more effective than punishing. Punishing a child teaches him to hide it better and does nothing to prevent this behavior in the future. The child may be scared into obedience for a short while, but the middah was not addressed. Sometimes children will only act out at home and be too shy to start up with kids outside their DNA circle. But more typically, friction arises between outsiders as well. If my four-year-old daughter is being boogeyman of the block to the toddlers, I will take her by the hand gently or even carry her inside if necessary, and say, “Oy, Kaily made a mistake. We have to go inside now.” It’s important I stay calm and firm in order to get the message across to my little one that we can only be around people if we act kind. I never want to shame,

threaten or give my child the silent treatment. I take a deep breath in and exhale the panic and embarrassment I may feel. I let my child know that I love her and we can try again tomorrow. I may remind her before leaving the house the next day, “I’m so excited to go play. If we stay kind, we can be outside, yay!” This can be adapted for older kids as well. “I’m so happy your friends invited you to the park! Keep it nice and considerate; everyone is allowed to join.” Mothers often search for one single technique to nip misconduct in the bud. “How can we teach our kids to be softer?” Notice our environment. We are in such a rush amid the hustle and bustle of what we call routine, we may not even realize how often we raise our voice, push, prod and poke our children in this marathon we call life. I try and stop often to kiss and hug my dear cutie-pies and take a moment to tell them how precious they are to me. I model gentleness and caring, empathy and compassion for our fellow humans in and out of our home. Children do what they see. So I try to fill their view with mitzvos and ma’asim tovim and help steer them on their own righteous paths. May Hashem help us all in our own little corner of the world. THE POWER OF TALENT THE INSIDE PERSPECTIVE A discussion with Mrs. Wertheimer, director of Kol Haneshama I saw that you are once again producing a play. How did you realize the benefits of teaching drama?

Firstly, our play this year is not only based on drama. We actually included dances and scenery painting (an original course). But going back to drama, I was always involved in plays and would watch the girls actually change in character according to their parts. Q: How does that happen?

A: When acting a part, the most important skill is to truly identify, understand and appreciate that part. Therefore you actually start thinking like your character, with similar emotions. For example, a tough girl would develop a soft touch by acting the part of a soft character. Q: So what happens with the girl playing a tough part in the play?

A: You are right. Each play will obviously have all kinds of parts. There are a few methods. The part could have a transformation, which means that the character slowly changes his or her point of view. This is a very powerful method. What we also do is constantly repeat during coaching that by truly acting “tough” we bring out the strength of the “good” character. The beautiful character becomes a team effort. Q: My child is a sweet kid. I wouldn’t want to change her character.

A: (Laughs…) There are many other benefits to drama. The seven skills we teach include active listening, engaging an audience, using your voice powerfully without becoming hoarse, identifying different emotions and more personal and interpersonal skills. These

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 25, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

skills make for a better conversationalist, public speaker and listener. Q: Wow! But what about the other classes? The scenery painting and dancing?

A: Each talent brings different benefits. Dancing is a great muscle strengthener and fun exercise. It teaches group coordination and respecting each other’s space. Painting is very beneficial for fine motor skills. Using different brushes and spreading paint evenly strengthens finger and hand muscle. Scenery painting adds the group benefits of waiting your turn, patience, coordinating with others and respecting their space and talent. Q: I think I’m joining the classes….

A: You would be surprised at how many more strengths talent can develop. Every course needs focus and concentration, in listening to instructions and understanding how to actually follow through. This automatically develops the focusing strength in all areas, including schooling and relationships. Q: Is this why you call this program KOL HANESHAMA?

A: Absolutely. We are looking to help each girl find the confidence and skills to express her inner beauty. Q: I’m impressed. Will you actually perform again?

A: Most definitely. The ten-week program ends with a professional performance with each class presenting their achievements. I must add that the performance itself is an experience. The audience gets involved, singing along and letting their emotions flow. It’s special. Q: I’m looking forward to watching it! Tell me, can I register my children right now?

Walk into Olympic National Forest in Washington State, and you might be hard-pressed to believe the lush green — and very North American — surroundings are part of a rainforest. Moss, ferns and towering evergreens fill the view, and the clear lack of monkeys, parrots and jaguars can boggle the mind. Is this really a rainforest? The answer is yes…

There are two types of rainforests: tropical rainforests, which are the ones we most often envision, and temperate rainforests, like the ones in Washington.

Rainforests are full of biodiversity. Nearly half of all animal and plant species live in a rain forest. Approximately 42,000 species of insects and more than 1,500 species of vegetation can be found in a single hectare of rainforest. And that’s before even mentioning the rich animal life to be found!

Rainforests have been nicknamed “the world’s biggest pharmacy.” Roughly 25% of all modern medicine can be sourced from rainforest plants, and according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, about 70% of known plants in various rainforests can be used in the treatment of that dreaded disease. These plants exist nowhere else, and many rainforest plants have yet to be researched. Who knows what undiscovered cures are still out there?

TROPICAL RAINFORESTS are located near the equator and are hot, wet and teeming with vegetation and wildlife. Temperatures are above 64°F year-round, and annual rainfall is between 66 inches and 360 inches.

The tropical rainforest canopy allows no more than 2% of light to reach the forest floor.

124 / THE MONSEY VIEW

A thick cloud cover hangs over most tropical rainforests, causing them to always feel humid.

It can take a raindrop ten minutes to penetrate the thick canopy of a tropical rainforest and reach the forest floor. This process naturally filters the water, leading rainforests to be key players in maintaining the world’s fresh water supply.

TEMPERATE RAINFORESTS are, well, temperate. Temperatures rarely drop below the freezing point of 32°F and rarely rise above 80°F. These forests are generally comfortably cool and perfect for a great hiking trip!

There are two distinct seasons in a temperate rainforest: a long, wet season, and a shorter, drier summer season. A dense fog provides moisture during the dry season, while rainfall keeps the forest wet in the longer one.

The largest stretch of temperate rainforests traverses over 1,200 miles, beginning in coastal Oregon and working its way up through Alaska. And it is absolutely the most magnificent of environments, in my opinion!

The canopy in a temperate rainforest excludes at least 70% of the sky from being seen.

The Amazon Rainforest is so large that it would be the ninth largest country in the world if counted as such. The plants of the Amazon are so vast that they produce as much as 20% of the world’s oxygen supply!

What?! How would he know about it?

Look, we have a lot of workers. Maybe one of them will tell, and then they won’t trust us and they’ll cancel future orders.

Uh, um, I’m panting because I ran upstairs quickly. I wanted to hurry and call our contact in London to tell him that the order will be ready on time despite the blackout.

You are so smart. Ever since I hired you, this business has really succeeded.

Hey! Why isn’t it in my pocket? Thank you.

Let’s go to the production room. We need to supervise the workers so they continue to work quickly. I’ll check out the electricity issue and call an electrician to see what the problem was.

Now I need to destroy the document with the instructions on how to carry out the sabotage.

I’m such a shlemazel! The paper must have fallen onto the porch! I must go back there!

I’m positive I put it in here!

Maybe it fell down here in my office?

Real Estate Gutters: Your Home’s Defense Against the Rain A HOME IS USUALLY the most expensive asset a family will own. It has the potential to appreciate more than any other material asset and provide security for the future. An “over 55” development that was just sold out in Pomona/New Hempstead proved this point. Many of the buyers went ahead with the purchase without a mortgage, mostly because they had sold their current homes, which had appreciated enough in value since being bought years ago to make this new purchase without needing to borrow. To preserve its value, it is important to maintain the condition of a home. In spirit of this issue’s theme, I thought this week would be perfect to discuss how rain can affect a home and what a homeowner needs to be aware of to protect it. Water is very damaging to the basic structure, roof, foundation and exterior siding of your home. The smallest amount of water can cause penetration, as the saying goes, “Water will find a way.” What may start out as a small amount of water will cause a lot of damage over time if it is allowed to continue. Once water penetrates the outside of your home, it will not take long before it enters the interior and starts to cause visible damage there. Water causes flooding. Having a flooded basement is more than inconvenient; it requires money and a lot of effort to get it properly drained. And that’s just the first step! After the water is removed, damaged furniture and other items have to be dealt with as well to prevent mold. Most water damage caused by rain will start around the roof structure, fascia, soffit and foundation. That is why there are gutters around the roof of the house. Your rain gutter system is designed to move rain water away from these areas to protect your home. Gutters also reroute rainwater properly so that it does not find a way into the home. If your gutters are not functioning for any reason, including the need to be cleaned, not only are they not protecting your home from water, but they may actually make the problem worse by allowing the water to overflow in the exact areas — like the roof, fascia, soffit or foundation — where most water damage problems begin. If you wait to clean your gutters until you notice them

If you wait to clean your gutters until you notice them overflowing or see the damage caused by clogged gutters, you did not clean them soon enough.

overflowing or see the damage caused by clogged gutters, you did not clean them soon enough. A question you might ask is, “lf I notice that my gutters are clogged, how long have they been this way?” Often they have been clogged way before you noticed. Most homeowners only notice the problem when they are home while it is raining and they notice water falling over the sides of their home in sheets. What happens when it is raining and they are not home? Or asleep? Or it is dark outside? Unless rainwater is causing visible damage, the homeowner often does not notice the clogged gutter. When a homeowner notices that water is overflowing the gutter, it has probably been overflowing for some time already. If a home has had wet or rotten wood on the roof edge, interior walls, fascia or soffit and often damp or moldy basements, the problem may have been caused by the rain gutter system not working properly. The key is keeping them clean of leaves and debris and making sure the connections are connected. While there is no magic number or frequency of gutter cleaning that will ensure that the gutters are always clean and the water is freeflowing out of the downspouts away from the home, waiting for the visible signs that the gutters are clogged will not be sufficient to protect the home. In short, gutters are critical to the long-term preservation of one’s home. If one doesn’t want water damage in their roof, basement, foundation or even the garden, one needs a way to route water away from these critical areas. This is why gutters are used worldwide, and although seemingly minor, are worthy of care and attention so that they function properly.
