that's what I'm here for. Regular cleaning and sanitizing is a must to keep those cans from becoming filthy, germy eyesores. STAY TUNED! New and exciting services coming soon אי״הdone the Kids First Way!
DOES YOUR CHILD STRUGGLE WITH STUTTERING OR ARTICULATING WORDS? SPEAK TO KIDS FIRST TODAY! At Kids First, we treat stuttering and articulation / phonological disorders in both children and adolescents. We incorporate the Lidcombe program, a behavioral and family-based approach, to treat preschoolers and school-aged children who stutter. To help adolescents/adults who stutter, we administer dynamic stuttering therapy, a program working to reteach the brain to use the same natural automatic speech production process as fluent speakers do. Backed by the Kids First model of monitoring each case and keeping an open dialogue among each kid’s home, school and therapist, YOUR CHILD WILL SPEAK CONFIDENTLY.

I don’t want to diminish the importance of Pearls of Wisdom, but I did want to correct the opening lines of last week’s article. The words to the popular children’s jump-rope song is “tinker (not tinkler), tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief.” A tinker is simply a repairman. The other one is “lily of the valley” (not lilly over). A lily of the valley is a groundcover perennial plant. These songs are probably more ancient than most of your readers and are just two of the very many used jump-rope ditties. Once again, thanks for a wonderful article. R.S.

I’m not usually one to comment on any articles, but this time I feel it’s very, very necessary. I read the article by Basya Kovacs last week and saw that she wrote, “Some of the other tools we learned, including teaching clients to eat slowly and mindfully, differentiating between true hunger and cravings and being more comfortable with the idea of being hungry...” Is she is advocating that we should be comfortable being hungry? Don’t you think that is setting people up for disaster? What is that message supposed to teach anyone reading that? That it’s okay and admirable to be hungry? Is that a healthy way to live? I would like to hear what you think regarding this message that was published in your magazine that is read by all of Monsey! Looking forward to hearing your response R.O.

BASYA KOVACS RESPONDS: Thank you so much for your letter! What we mean by being comfortable with hunger is that when one is trying to lose weight and go from an unhealthy weight to a healthy weight, it requires cutting calories. If someone is used to a higher amount of calories, reducing their caloric intake will feel like hunger. The idea here is that although it doesn’t feel comfortable, it is okay. I hope this clarifies things. Best, Basya
A SMALL REQUEST To My Dearest Caring Mommy, Thank you so much for so carefully selecting my most beautiful hat and shawl set. I very much appreciate the amount of effort you put in so that it should be that perfect shade to match my new coat! I am even more grateful that the gloves you purchased are well-lined and extremely warm. Can you please take a moment to label each piece, since like most kids, I sometimes tend to leave these items on the bus, in school, at Bubby’s or drop them on my way home? By doing this, they will hopefully make their way back home. With much appreciation, Your Grateful Daughter
AN ARTICLE AT THE RIGHT TIME My baby was suffering from the Coxsackie virus and was so miserable. He refused to take anything into his mouth and was so uncomfortable and in pain. It was such hashgacha pratis when I opened The Monsey View, only to see an article about the healing powers of goat’s milk and the local goat farm that has this service available. I decided to give it a try. It wasn’t easy holding my toddler down for this minute, but I took home a transformed child who was happy, eating and smiling. Thank you for your timely article! A Grateful Mother
RE: THE CHANGING FACE OF MONSEY’S SHOPPING DISTRICT (ISSUE #123) I wanted to comment on your article about Monsey’s first heimishe stores. Shelli’s, which you mentioned was Monsey’s first pizza shop was originally Heshy’s Pizza, and they opened on that same location on Maple Avenue as Monsey’s first kosher pizza shop. E.A.
Thank you so much for the interesting article on Monsey’s shopping district. I wanted to add that Ace Flooring, owned by the Rosenbergs, was originally in the area across Klein’s mini-market, as was the original post office. Mr. B.
RE: REPLY TO “PRIVATE PROPERTY” (ISSUE #123) The writer L.R.R. apparently doesn’t have a shortcut as the point of view expressed doesn’t take into account the many challenges shortcut providers experience. The writer is correct about all the s’char and merit for allowing people to use their shortcuts.

I’m writing in regard to a letter that was printed a while back in your inbox, cautioning readers not to let themselves be administered dental treatment that they don’t need. After a personal experience in which a root canal was done by a dentist without me experiencing any pain, I want to remind all of you: If you don’t feel any pain, you most probably do not need dental work! Please go for a second opinion when in doubt. M.M. CORRECTION: In last week’s article Journey to Africa, I mistakenly wrote that Kenya is renowned for the Sahara Desert. THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:
EDITION CHAPTER 15
By: Basya Kovacs
AS YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED, in the past year or so, our TAP line of cookies, muffins and other products have become a major sensation. As of this month, we are in over 70 supermarkets near our nutrition locations, and the list keeps growing! To keep up with the demand of supermarkets and to allow ourselves to continue to expand, we recently signed with Quality Distributors, who will be overseeing the distribution and growth of our product line. This is exciting for us as it will allow us to expand in a more organized fashion — for example, my husband will be very pleased to give up late-night deliveries to Teaneck and Clifton grocery stores. So at this year’s Kosherfest, we had a booth with Quality Distributors. Let me tell you some of the highlights of Kosherfest. First, there was getting to the Meadowlands. As many of you know, I live in Clifton, NJ, which is approximately nine minutes away from the Exposition Center where Kosherfest took place. When I first realized how near the venue was to my house, I was thrilled. No long drive and no traffic. What could be better? I left the house 30 minutes early to leave time for parking and set out for a fun day of networking (and food-tasting). Unfortunately, I missed one turn and then another, and before I knew it, 40 minutes were added to my ETA! I felt my blood pressure rise and my anger start to mount. This was supposed to be easy! And I left early! And now I’m running late! And I don’t even know how I missed that turn so I may make the exact same mistake again! As I drove, though, I was struck by a realization. The reason I was so frustrated was because my expectation was that this would be easy. Had I been driving to Manhattan, I would have left my house earlier, come prepared for a longer ride, and become less frustrated
74 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 29, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
if something went wrong. It was my expectation that this trip would be easy that made the whole experience infuriating. I realized that this is often how it is with dieting. When we are tempted by foods that are not on our plan, we rationalize tasting some, telling ourselves “a little bit won’t hurt.” And we do this over and over again, despite the fact that when we weigh in, we find that those little bites actually did hurt. We simply don’t feel that resisting 25 or 50 calories of food is worth the effort that it takes to resist it. It feels like too much work for something so small! If we change that expectation, we will be more willing to put forth the effort that it takes to resist even the small bites, and the scale will reflect that effort. Ultimately, of course, I found my way to Kosherfest only a few minutes later than planned. It was incredible to walk around the different booths and see how many of the food companies we are already working with. So many different brands out there already have at least one or two products in their product line that bear our TAP seal of approval, and many more approached us at Kosherfest asking us how they can adjust their products to get approved. The demand for healthy, low-calorie options in the Kosher food market has skyrocketed. Another highlight for me was the uniqueness of the range of opportunities that presented themselves to us. For example, a school representative came over to our booth to find out about stocking TAP products in her high school vending machine. Imagine: Students may be able to purchase actual food from the snack machine, instead of junk. Amazing! And when I voiced my concern about students paying more for our products when they are used to paying a dollar or less for a junky snack
from the machine, the representative responded that she is absolutely not concerned; parents are happy to pay for the more expensive product if it means their child will eat better. Then there was a representative from a large amusement park chain, looking to provide prepackaged kosher meals for their visitors. Think about the last time you went to an amusement park, cruise or remote vacation destination. Imagine knowing that without shopping, cooking, freezing and shlepping, you could still have delicious kosher meals that would not sabotage your diet! Another unique unTAPped market! So Kosherfest turned out to be an interesting day filled with frustrations, realizations, opportunities and yes, of course, food. But even as I was tasting small bites from different vendors, I kept my new realization in mind: Just because something has only a few calories, doesn’t mean it is easy to resist! Work hard, stay on track and reach your goals! Basya Kovacs is a nutrition counselor at Nutrition by Tanya and is the manager of the Monsey, Monroe, and soon-to-come Staten Island locations. WHEN BAILA* MARRIED her husband, she agreed to move to America to live with him near his Rebbe. An older couple who lived next door stepped in to be like family to Baila in her new country. Because she did not know too many people in her new community, Baila would not have many people attend her simchos. Every time Baila had a baby, this older couple would visit her in the hospital, and they would urge their children to do likewise. Immediately after each birth, the older couple would send a large bouquet of flowers to Baila in the hospital. Then they came to visit as early as was appropriate, shining genuine love and warmth upon Baila. They always brought a lovely gift for her, as well as for the baby, along with fresh, hot soup. When this couple came, they lifted Baila’s spirits and helped her feel truly loved. They accomplished what they had set out to do many times over. Their children, however, were only doing the mitzvah because their parents pushed them to do so. When one daughter came to visit Baila in the hospital, she bluntly told her the truth: “My mother called me up and told me that you had a baby and I should go visit you and bring you this soup. I said, ‘Mommy, I don’t have time to shlep to the hospital. I’m too busy!’ So she told me that she’s ordering a taxi to pick me up, bring me to her house for the food, then bring me to the hospital. The car is also waiting for me outside to bring me home, so I can’t stay long.” Baila later reported that there was no denying that this woman did a true mitzvah that day — the soup really made a big difference to her. Yet the encounter left her feeling somewhat… worthless. This week’s parsha begins, “Vayishlach Yaakov malachim l’fanav el Eisav… — Yaakov sent malachim before himself to Eisav…” (Bereishis 32:4). Rashi cites the Midrash that these malachim were not human messengers, but actual malachim (angels) (Bereishis Rabbah 75:4). What malachim were these, why did they come specifically to Yaakov and how was he able to command them to go to Eisav? The Sfas Emes explains that the malachim Yaakov created through the mitzvos he performed while
80 / THE MONSEY VIEW
living with Lavan accompanied and guarded him in his exile. These malachim went forth to Eisav as Yaakov’s guardians. Every time we do a mitzvah, we generate a malach that defends us, and every time we do the opposite, chalilah, we create a malach that will accuse us at the time of judgment (Pirkei Avos 13a). The more perfectly we perform the mitzvah, the more perfectly the malach will be formed. A mitzvah done improperly still creates a malach, but it will be a deficient malach. The key to creating powerful malachim who will stand in our defense lies in the quality of the mitzvos we do. The Yalkut Shimoni says that even one mitzvah done “k’aish” (like fire) can generate such a powerful malach that if 1,000 malachim were to testify in the Beis Din Shel Maalah, this one malach could save us even if all of the remaining malachim were all speaking against us for the prosecution (Yalkut Shimoni Iyov 32:23). How does one do a mitzvah k’aish? The letters of k’aish are roshei teivos for the ways to do a mitzvah k’aish: kaf represents kavanah, aleph represents ahavah and shin represents simcha. Thus, the keys to doing a mitzvah k’aish are that you do the mitzvah with intent, with love and with joy. When the older couple did the mitzvah of visiting Baila in the hospital, they truly did it k’aish. Their kavanah was to lift Baila’s spirits as much as possible, with genuine love. They did the mitzvah with ahavah — there was no doubt that they poured love into the mitzvah, going above and beyond what would be an ordinary act of inclusion. And they did it with true simcha. They would not have complained to Baila about their busy schedule because there was no doubt that squeezing Baila into their schedule brought them true joy. We should always aim to do mitzvos more perfectly. As a person does mitzvos throughout the day, it can be very motivating to remember that this mitzvah is generating a malach. If we want to create a stronger malach who will ultimately stand up in our defense, we can try to add even just a little more of the three keys: kavanah, ahavah and simcha.

We can all recall an occasion where gift-giving left us in a state of confusion, disappointment and overall frustration. For many of us, those special moments in life were oftentimes marred by the stress of gift-giving. You’d run around to the few shops you could think of in search of a graduation gift for your 12th-grade niece, browse the same gifts you’ve seen when you shopped for her kindergarten graduation, and wind up stuffing some cash into a card you could already read without bothering to open it. Not that you were looking to chicken out, but rather, no gift could quite express or capture just what you were wishing to impart. Well, giftgiving is about to get simpler. Step into Rosiér, and be awed at the game-changer before you. You will leave eagerly awaiting the next gift-shopping opportunity.
WHO IS ROSIÉR? Rosiér (Ro-zee-ay’), a high-end fashion accessory boutique, is just what our town has been missing. Offering an extensive selection of fashion accessories like jewelry, casual and evening bags as well as travel accessories, there’s something for everyone. At Rosiér, you get spoiled for choice with their delectable selection of eye candy, a place rightfully dubbed by customers as the “women’s candy shop.”
HASSLE-FREE LEISURE Up until the launching of Rosiér, New York City and Brooklyn had been the choice destinations for those seeking exclusive high-end fashion accessories unavailable locally. That will soon be a distant memory, as Rosiér has brought New York City to you! Brooklynites are, in fact, frequent shoppers here too! Talk about role reversal! Rosiér has brilliantly pooled together the kallah must-have shops, bringing bridal necessities like Canadian capes and winter accessories for those chilly nighttime strolls, signa-

ture luggage for Shabbos at the inlaws, Italian scarves for every sheva brochos outfit, fine jewelry pieces to complete the vort dress and, of course, Parisian evening bags for those nights out on the town — all under one roof. Rosiér travels the world so you don’t have to!
and diverse styles rather than restocking the same pieces. You will continuously be amazed at your new findings with each visit. And in their magical way, the orderly style in which the grand selection is displayed creates an ambience of pleasurable ease.
HOW IS ROSIÉR DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS?
OH, SO MANY CHOICES!
Rosiér isn’t just another fashion boutique. At Rosiér, you will find high-end fashion names like Zac Posen, Marcia Moran, Bronzallure, Marc Jacob, Luana Italy as well as select gifts exclusive to Rosiér. Walk out modeling an exquisite pair of earrings, and attend social events sporting your unique evening bag you know won’t be the one that “everyone else is wearing.” Every woman is unique and deserves a gift that is equally unique. The diversity is astounding! With over 50 different style bags and a choice of 30-odd capes, the selection is unlike anything you’ve seen before and the range of style one you won’t find elsewhere! Striving to maintain uniqueness, Rosiér stocks new
You’ve finally found the right place, but the sheer amount of decisions before you is overwhelming! Go with the classy Botkier bag or dainty Cristina Sabatini? Which jewelry style will better complement my wedding dress — druzy stones, aqua pearls or perhaps 18K gold-plated dazzlers? What will make more of a statement gift — leather gloves, a cashmere ‘n fur cape or that marble clutch? What do teens wear these days? Fret not, Rosiér’s in-house fashion advisers are at your service! With their unsurpassed expertise, broad knowledge and, above all, honesty and patience, it’s like having your personal shopper there with you, working for you!
ONE SIZE FITS ALL What clientele does Rosiér cater to? you wonder as you make your Chanukah gift list for the special women in your life. You’d like to get a unique, high-end luggage set for your son’s kallah, jewelry rolls for her teen sisters, an Italian silk scarf for your mother, the Tiffany and Fred handbag you noticed your daughter-in-law eyeing, necklaces for your teenage daughters, a one-of-a-kind watch for your child’s one-of-a-kind teacher, and you’d love to surprise your sister with a full-size bottle of the Chando perfume sample she’s skimping on… And as you tuck your list into your wallet, the seams are nudging you to finally get that replacement you promised yourself last year Chanukah. You mentally calculate your shopping route, possibly stretched over the course of the next few days, and wish you could find it all under one roof. Here’s a little secret: If you put Rosiér as the first stop on your gift-shopping route, your next stop will be back home, with a completely crossed-off list tucked into your new wallet. It’s no wonder more than half of Rosiér’s clientele are returning customers!
THE NO-FAIL RECIPE IN GIFT-GIVING We all know someone with a taste so unique, you can never quite predict their sense of style. It’s like following a recipe to a T, only to have your kids tell you that your cookies taste like pretzels. But you can never go wrong with candy. So when in doubt, send this special someone some candy in the form of a Rosiér gift card; after all, it’s the women’s candy shop! With the boundless choices they will be pre sented, they will be sure to unearth the treasure of their dreams. And unlike candy, Rosiér’s gift cards never expire! Their signature gift cards are presented so beautifully, they make a statement of their own! Customers exude a sense of pride as they browse to find the perfect redemption for their prized gift card. But suppose you knew (or rather, thought you knew) just what your friend wished for and had the bag of her dreams exquisitely wrapped and shipped by Rosiér, but then found out that her wish list had changed within the last month since you’d last asked her the “hypothetical question about evening bags.” No worries; with a full week to exchange her gift, she can update her evening bag collection accordingly. Or choose to exchange it for the gift card, to allow her wish list some time and room for expansion. So this Chanukah season, brighten the lights in your giftee’s eyes, with the certainty that you’ve met their match. They say a smile is the most beautiful accessory. Rosiér is here to make that happen.

Bergen County Prosecutor Installs Monitor, Launches Investigation of Parkway Police A MONITOR from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office will be overseeing the activities of the Palisades Parkway Police, investigating the department’s policies, procedures and practices for an unspecified amount of time. VIN News reported that Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the appointment of the monitor, but declined to give specific reasons for his decision, saying only that the move came in response to “a number of incidents that occurred over the last year that gave us reason to look further.” The monitoring staff was given full authority to correct any problems identified during the review process and are conducting a full investigation that will include the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department’s administrative policies, internal affairs, evidence collection and storing practices, training procedures, spe-
cial services, personnel and information technology systems. The Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department was founded in 1908 and patrols the 11-mile-long stretch of highway from the George Washington Bridge until the New York State line as well as Palisades Interstate Park. But over the years the department has found itself dogged by allegations of unfair actions and profiling. While the number of complaints lodged against the department dropped after it installed dashcams in all of its police cruisers in 2008, it has still faced intense scrutiny with lawmakers unsuccessfully attempting to dissolve the force in 2009 and to place it under the authority of the New Jersey State Police in 2010. Just last year, a Chaverim member found himself slapped with a hefty fine after stopping to help a stranded motorist change a flat tire in the gas
station at the base of the Palisades on the northbound side of the highway. At the time, Police Chief Michael Coppola defended the ticket, saying that only authorized service providers are allowed to provide aid on the highway and that if Chaverim wanted to be able to help motorists, they needed to follow procedure to become an authorized provider. Chaverim founder Aron Kohn condemned the parkway police for its actions, saying that both Hatzolah and Chesed Shel Emes have complained about being targeted by the department over the years. A statement issued by the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police acknowledged that a cooperative monitoring agreement was in place with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and directed all further inquiries to that office.
One-Way Traffic Resumes on Hungry Hollow Bridge JUST OVER A MONTH after the Hungry Hollow Road overpass was closed due to structural damage, the bridge has been reopened for alternating one-way traffic to both pedestrians and vehicles. The bridge was closed indefinitely to all traffic on October 12 after it was hit by a truck traveling on the New York State Thruway. Work will continue on the bridge, with traffic lights installed to control the flow of traffic. A four-

foot shoulder next to the existing sidewalk on the east side of the bridge will be available to pedestrians. County Executive Ed Day thanked the Department of Transportation and Highway Superintendent Skip Vezzetti for their efforts to reopen the bridge as quickly as possible. “People in that area of Rockland County were very eager to be able to use the bridge again,” said Day.

Chanukah conjures up memories of warmth and contentment. Although it’s cold and frigid outside, the light of the Chanukah licht warms our hearts. I opted for a softly hued table setting for this party to illustrate just that. The table is classy and sophisticated, the pink peonies fresh and soothing, and the greens add a pop of color to the decor. The memories of Chanukah remain etched in our minds way longer than it takes for the food to be digested; whatever venue or colors you decide to use for your party, the main thing is the achdus and memories that you create. Remember, less is more. No need to put everything but the kitchen sink on your table. A clean and neat look lends itself to a classy and upscale affair. So roll up your sleeves, compile your shopping list and check out your favorite haunts. Let your creative juices flow and allow your talents to be revealed in the creation of what will surely be a masterpiece. The planning has officially begun!

Fried Sweet Potato and Pastrami Salad Everyone is always on the lookout for a salad that’s different and new, and this one has an especially pretty presentation. The lasagna arc is an eye-pleasing surprise on this plate, a worthy garnish to a great salad.
• • • •
Salad 1 bag Romaine lettuce ½ red onion, sliced 1 sweet potato, peeled into strips and fried ½ pound pastrami, cut into squares and fried
Vinaigrette The sugar can be substituted for Splenda with great results! • 1/3 cup vinegar • 1 tsp. salt • ¾ cup sugar • 1 tsp. mustard • 3 cubes crushed garlic • 1 cup oil • Drop of lemon juice Directions 1. Using a hand blender, mix all ingredients together. 2. Pour over salad. Garnish • Deep-fry one lasagna at a time, while pressing it against the wall of the pot with a spoon in order to get the right shape. A smaller pot will need less oil for deep-frying, but it is easier to shape the arcs in a larger pot. Tip: Pour hot oil over the lasagna with a spoon to get it soft enough to fit into the pot. Tip: Use the oil from the lasagne to fry the sweet potato and pastrami for this salad.

Lower the temperature to 250° and bake for an additional three hours.
Tip: This recipe works very well for flanken as well. To plate these steaks, scoop some mashed potatoes in the center of the plate and layer with mashed sweet potatoes. Place the meat on the sweet potatoes, top it with roasted asparagus and garnish with beets.

Melt baking chocolate in a double boiler and dip each individual square, one side at a time, into the chocolate. Dip into peanut brittle while chocolate is still runny. 3. Using an ice cream scoop, put first one scoop of praline ice cream, and then another half scoop, onto each square. (This is to get a flatter, less neat look.) 4. Layer a scoop and a half of vanilla ice cream on top of the praline ice cream, flattening the first scoop before placing the other half over it. 5. In a double boiler, melt the Torino chocolate bars and praline paste. Pour sauce over the ice cream. 6. Garnish ice cream with a piece of chocolate bark or with a decorative mini spoon.

The cold and frost and winds outside make sitting indoors all the more cozy, and the colder the air that’s banished, the warmer is the home. Then comes Chanukah, with its flickering candles and the company of family, and warm becomes warmer until it fills the heart.

Much of Chanukah revolves around the gathering of family, friends and almost-forgotten acquaintances, and the joy of relationships only compounds the beauty of this glorious yom tov. And what better way to spend time together than with games, laughter and a healthy sense of humor?

This is a Chinese Auction with a twist. A twist that will keep the laughter going and the surprises coming, because did you know these things about your friends and family?
DO’S AND DON’TS CHINESE AUCTION Instructions:
QUESTIONS: • Do you get out of bed before 7:30 in the morning? • Are you the one who gives directions in the car? • Do you sometimes close yourself into a room for quiet time? • Do you wash for breakfast in the morning?
1. Purchase several gifts, wrap them, and prepare a box with a slit on top near each wrapped prize for the tickets.
• Are you a stay-at-home-mom?
2. Compile a list of questions to ask. (See right for a list of ideas, and you can add your own to customize to the event and attendees.)
• Did you sleep more than two hours this Shabbos afternoon?
3. Assign one person to lead the game, and have her ask the crowd one question at a time. 4. Participants receive one ticket for each question they can answer yes to. 5. At the end of the game, participants should write their name on their tickets and drop them into the slitted boxes. 6. Draw one ticket from each box, and announce the lucky winners!
124 / THE MONSEY VIEW
• Do you say Kriyas Shema from a siddur? • Are you the one who changes light bulbs in your house? • Are you still at your first job? • Have you made your own Seder? • Are you the one who prepares negel vasser? • Do you generally bake your own challahs? • Do you exercise regularly? • Are your kitchen sinks empty each night before you go to sleep? • Do you sing along during zemiros? • Did you make your own grocery order this week by going to the store? • Do you have at least three appointments lined up in the next two weeks? • Are you in bed before 10:30? For a family party: • Do you know Zaidy’s yahrtzeit by heart? • Do you know Tatty and Mommy’s anniversary? • Do you remember the name of the bungalow colony we spent a summer at fifteen years ago? • Do you know the names of all of your female first cousins, including the ones who married into the family? For a class party: • Do you remember the name of the history sub in tenth grade? • Can you list all of our elementary limudei kodesh teachers? • Do you remember the name of the main character in our high school play?
Have you ever attended a party where you knew all of the other attendees...once upon a time? This is a fun get-toknow-me-again game.
FOUR TRUTHS AND A LIE Instructions: 1. Each participant gets five labels and a pen. Everyone writes one fact (which shouldn’t be too obvious or easy to guess; see some examples below) about themselves on each label. Four facts should be truths and one should be a lie. These labels then get stuck onto the person’s top. 2. The first person gets up and reads her five facts aloud, and the rest of the crowd proceeds to guess which fact is the lie. (This is when the serious fun starts!) 3. Once the rest of the participants guess which fact is the lie, that label gets moved to the person’s back. 4. The next person to get up is someone for whom the first person’s lie is true (e.g., the first person’s lie is that she goes to sleep before 10:00 p.m. every night, and this does hold true for the second person). 5. The second person takes the seat on the right of the first person, and then reads her own list aloud. 6. Soon everyone has seated to her right a person who finds that her lie is true for them. When all participants have had a turn and the entire crowd is seated in order, each person turns to the person on her left and offers a fun piece of advice to help her out with whatever her lie (i.e., difficulty) was. 7. To create a memento from the party, pass around a sheet with space for each person to write her name, truth (i.e., strength) and advice idea. Copy, distribute and enjoy!
FACTS: • I always fall asleep over whatever I’m reading. • I never enter a car without a sheitel on. • I do not go to sleep without a spotless kitchen. • I own five purses. • I never iron my husband’s shirts.
This one is for the guys who are confident enough not to mind looking terrifically incompetent. Disclaimer: You may never leave them to babysit again!
PEELING WITH PANACHE Instructions: Have the men line up in a row, set an empty pail or bowl in front of each participant, and hand each one a phone, doll, potato and peeler. Whoever first gets his potato fully peeled without dropping anything wins!

This game is a blast for adults and great for kids, too! Bring on the laughter!
TRIVIA TOWER Instructions: To Prepare 1. The person organizing the game should prepare a list of questions (see some examples below). There should be an odd amount of questions to guarantee a winner, and the answers should be words (or numbers) with descending letter-counts (i.e., the first answer should be a 9-letter word, the next an 8-letter word, and so on until the last answer has 1 letter or number). 2. The answers should be spelled out on plastic cups, with one letter or number on each cup. Add a few extra lettered or numbered cups to keep the answers hidden, and shuffle stack of cups to prevent players from spelling out the answers too soon. 3. Repeat Step 2 for the second team. To Play 1. The crowd of participants gets split into two teams, and each team is handed one stack of cups. 2. The person leading the game asks the first question, and both teams have to come up with the answer and quickly spell it out using their prepared cups. The first team to have their answer ready gets a point. 3. The person leading the game asks the second question, and both teams scramble to add another level to their tower. Points are only awarded to a team whose tower is standing. 4. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins!
QUESTIONS: Note: These are trivia questions (first answer has 9 letter; the last one has 1), though this game can work at reunions with questions like “Which classmate joined our class in fifth grade?” • What or who is a POTUS? • Which state is known for horse racing? • What is the most spoken language in the world? • What is the seventh planet from the sun? • How many feet in an acre? • Which president is the only one who also served as Chief Justice of the United States? • What kind of trees do acorns grow on? • What were Churchill and Thatcher, abbreviated? • How many colors in a rainbow? Answers: President; Kentucky; Chinese; Uranus; 43560; Taft; oak; PM; 7. 128 / THE MONSEY VIEW

IT MAY HAVE BEEN JUST A DAY, a decade or half a century since you saw each other last, but if you’re going to be getting together, chances are that it’ll be happening around this time. There’s something about Chanukah that brings our hearts together and has us calling around in an attempt to organize reunions; it’s time to get together with family and friends, workmates and classmates. Did I say Chanukah? The “Chanukah party season” in the average Yiddish community extends from the week before Rosh Chodesh Kislev until roughly around Shvat time, but no matter — as long as we
get to see each other.
Where to Host If it’s just your family and you fit around your kitchen table, there’s nothing more homey than that. When the reunion includes three generations of family, you can probably still squeeze into a home that can accommodate a crowd, but it’s always best to prepare multiple rooms: one for the children, one for the adults, one for the program and another for the coats! For multi-generational reunions,
A graduate of ‘65 shares how it was to meet after 45 years: I moved out to Monsey from Brooklyn when I was 15 years old. Out of the 48 girls who made up our wonderful class, a few live here in Monsey, whom I get to meet often. As for the rest, they’re spread out all over the world, from different areas in Brooklyn to Mt. Kisco, Canada, Antwerp, Manchester and Eretz Yisroel. There are one or two classmates whom I haven’t seen at all since our school days. Most of my classmates I get to meet very rarely, and it’s a special treat each time we do. About eight years ago, in honor of our 45th class reunion, one very special former member of our class arranged and hosted a beautiful event. She even flew in a classmate from abroad to join. It was truly momentous in so many ways; we hadn’t officially gotten together from when we were young mothers! Many years back, the mosed we had learned at would incorporate class reunions into their fundraising events, and also, in the years following our graduation, we’d catch up with each other from time to time. Between 20 and 30 years ago, when a classmate was here from abroad, the same hostess of this event arranged a breakfast in our classmate’s honor, and quite a few of us joined. But since then, we had never formally gotten together. From when the beautiful invitation arrived in the

there are basements, school lunchrooms and shuls around Monsey that rent out their place for a minimal fee. Sometimes you can also hire their janitors to help out with the setting up and cleanup. There are places in the mountains that are available for rent for overnighters or Shabbatons, which create beautiful family memories and give the entire family a getaway to reconnect and recharge.
What About Food? A catered meal or buffet is a great
mail, it was a day we were looking forward to. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a heartwarming welcome sign on the lawn. Then a bus from the city arrived, and suddenly I was face-to-face with the women who had been such an integral part of my childhood, but whom I hadn’t seen in decades. Throughout our time spent together, we were treated like royalty; our classmate went all out to give us a day to remember. The setup was gorgeous, and there were enlarged photos adorning the walls depicting our school and camp days. The program was so inspiring with former members of our class contributing with their talents. Two of our classmates spoke beautifully, one read an inspirational story and another sang a few touching songs. Each detail of the event was spectacular, but the highlight was definitely meeting everyone and connecting once again. It was so heartwarming to sit together and reminisce about our teachers and school days. One of my classmates remarked that she was more emotional at the reunion than she was at her daughter’s wedding! The air was charged with sentiments and rich memories. One classmate joined us all the way from Manchester to attend this occasion. Another guest of honor was a classmate who lives in Brooklyn who was en route to Montreal where her child was getting married. They made a stop on the way, and the entire family waited an hour in the van so she could join us for at least part of the event. We all posed for a class picture, those once-young girls now bubbies and great-grandmothers ka”h a few times over, and we were thrilled to find a printout in the mail shortly thereafter. We went home with full hearts, warm memories and a beautiful CD given to us as a memento.

option if possible, especially during Chanukah when the kids are home and when the schedule revolves around the lighting of the Chanukah licht. For large, informal affairs that include kids, buffet-style is usually the way to go. You can either order the food and split the cost, or have every family contribute with one food item. For smaller crowds or class parties, there are some restaurants who will avail their facilities after hours for a minimal cost, or rent their party room. For a buffet-style meal, keeping things individual makes serving the simplest and cleanest. Chafing racks are a no-brainer for keeping things warm.
Program Ideas Games prepared in advance for kids or adults always up the excitement and give the evening structure. Prepare interactive activities that highlight the positive characteristics of the participants and foster camaraderie and reconnection. If the space allows it, you can have the kids of each participating family prepare a booth for a carnival and let the kids have a blast playing and scoring points. One family should be assigned the organizing of the reward system, so the work is distributed evenly. There are so many entertainment options for kids, which can be organized by a capable family member or a hired professional. Some options out there are face painting, bird shows, balloon shows, sculpting, ceramic painting or inexpensive DIY crafts for each child to complete. Food decorating is also a winning activity; donut- or cookie-decorating or chocolate fountain–dipping provides a

Unless there is one person in a family, class or group of friends who loves arranging and hosting, it’s usually best to use a rotating system to keep things balanced. Assigning the next year’s party heads at the previous year’s party avoids a lot of last-minute scrounging together to put a party in order. Party heads can be determined with an organized rotating system, or can be assigned the job randomly at a game or other way. Some ideas: Organizers can be chosen for being either the first or the last ones to arrive at the party; winners or losers of a game; or for being the ones to sit on chairs with “congratulations” stickers under them.
A Five-Generation Reunion How one family reconnected with those they love Since I was a little girl, my grandparents’ home has always been the heartbeat of my extended family’s existence. The essence, the neshamah of this home, has been lovingly crafted over time. Festive Purim seudos, upsherins, bar mitzvahs… We’ve celebrated many milestones within the gracious, elegant walls of 5 Lane Street. My beshow — as well as many other family members’ beshows — was held in my grandfather’s den with its somber brown paneling and exposed wooden beams. Like several other siblings and cousins before me, my l’chaim, and the beautiful engagement party that followed, took place there as well. When I pass by Lane Street, I am still overcome by feelings of nostalgia and wistfulness. I envision the late afternoon sun pouring in from the great bay win-

The highlight of the year would be when our family gathered for the Seder in my grandparents’ dining room. Such nights unfolded as my Zaidy, the proud patriarch, would raise his becher in the air, and start the Seder with a ringing pronouncement: “Kadeish!” The Seder began. Uncles and cousins expounded on the Haggadah, while shy young cousins teetered on chairs as they recited the Mah Nishtana in unison. Grandchildren ran around tables in pursuit of the Afikomen. After each meal, the family broke up into lively clusters. There was a sense of déjà vu as we farbrenged together, reminiscing and reconnecting over platters of fruits and nosh. The children, scattered in groups across the colony, got to know cousins whom they had never previously met. Motzei Shabbos After such an inspiring and rich Shabbos, we were all ready for the melaveh malka. The lights dimmed. My grandfather took the mike in his hands. When I looked at him, I could see that this moment was very meaningful in his eyes. Face wrenched with emotion, his voice raw with feeling, Zaidy spoke warmly and simply as he expressed his feelings of emotion and gratitude for meriting to see all his einiklach share such a beautiful Shabbos together. A cousin took his seat at the dais near where my grandparents were seated, and we listened, transfixed, as he skillfully interviewed them. They shared details about their early childhood: their siblings, their homes, their schooling. My grandfather vividly described the stark poverty his family endured in Romania. My grandmother described her youth in Budapest. We were riveted as they told us of their wartime experience and arrival to America. A slideshow followed. Several einiklach had collected old photos of my grandparents in their youth and as a young couple. They had also managed to lay their hands on some old projector films. The yellowing images were fascinating — and often hilarious. Our grandparents were then presented with a gift from all of us, and the unforgettable evening culminated in high spirits. Dawn was breaking as we left the dining room. The next morning, some cousins stayed on past breakfast and others headed home earlier, parting from each other with the special glow of having reconnected as family in such a beautiful way.

Dreidel Cupcakes By: Gitty Luria
146 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Every year before Chanukah as I’d stroll down the seasonal aisle at the grocery, I’d be met with new, ingenious baking supplies and gadgets. They seemed exciting and begged to be taken home, until I’d discover them before Pesach, lost in the depths of some cabinet along with the unlucky few that got to come home the year before. This year, as I found myself heading toward the Chanukah supplies, I had my mind set on dreidel cupcakes. These should be simpler than any of the other Chanukah-themed foods, I figured, using my favorite cupcake recipe, good old Wilton pans and my faithful Bosch machine. All I needed were dreidel cupcake liners. But of the hundreds of Chanukah items before my eyes, dreidel cupcake liners or cups were nowhere to be found. Or muffin cups in any Chanukah shape, for that matter. But since my mind was set on dreidel cupcakes, they were going to happen, one way or another. If you can’t buy it, try it! No need to buy any elaborate gadgets or spend money you don’t have on costly baking goods. Use your own cupcake pans and liners. And this magic little kitchen staple: silver foil.

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°.
Supplies
2. Line pans with cupcake liners.
• Cupcake liners
3. Cut foil into about 3x3” squares, two per cupcake. Gently roll and press foil into about / ”x1” pieces. Place one foil piece on each side of the cupcake liners at the upper corners, forming 90-degree angles. Foils don’t have to be perfect at this point; once filled, the batter will hold them in place. (You need to put them in place before because it won’t work after liners are filled.)
• Silver foil
4. Make your favorite cupcake recipe, or use the one featured here.
• Siddur or book with large aleph-beis
5. Fill cupcake liners / – / full, taking care to keep foil pieces in place as you pour. You may adjust them as needed.
• Parchment paper
6. After baking per recipe’s instructions, allow to cool completely.
• Confectioners’ sugar
7. Meanwhile, trace a large ש, ה, ג, נonto parchment paper. You may trace one of each and reuse the same pieces or trace the amount needed. Cut out the letters.

PART 4
FROM KOLLEL TO REBBI TO… WHAT? WHEN SHIMON FIRST CALLED me, I wasn’t sure if he was someone who needed my services. He sounded confident, comfortable and had a decent first job as a rebbi. I listened to him describe what he felt was missing for him at work and why he was looking for another job. His story was familiar, though of course unique. A proud father of two, Shimon had been lucky to have enjoyed a few years in kollel with family support. A year ago, when he had been looking for a job upon the birth of their second child, he had been offered a job as a rebbi at a local cheder. At the time, he had been thrilled at the offer and flattered that he had been chosen from the many kollel yungeleit hoping for a similar position. A year later, however, Shimon was feeling stressed and burnedout, and he was dreading the first day back at school. He also realized that although the salary was enough
154 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 29, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
to cover his family’s current bills, it wasn’t enough for a long-standing job. His dream of buying a house and not having to rely on his wife’s part-time secretarial position to make ends meet seemed far off. He thought of looking for another job but had absolutely no idea where to get started. Without a high school diploma or formal training and without college being an option, he was considering buying a local business, managing a store or training as a bookkeeper. Shimon’s first step was opening The Monsey View classified sections to see what his local options were. He noticed a few jobs that that seemed interesting to him, but the only way to get in touch with the people hiring was by emailing a resume. But how to get started on writing a resume, and exactly what experience would he be able to list? A friend of his who had used my services sug-
gested he call me, which he did. After hearing about where Shimon was up to in a job search, I had a few suggestions. First, I wanted to help him narrow down his job options and figure out which field would have a long-term future for him. Second, I wanted to understand what it was about being a rebbi that wasn’t enjoyable for him. It was important not to give up a decent position before he had another good option. It would also be helpful to know what to avoid in the future so he wouldn’t have similar issues in his next position. Since creating a resume for a job is one of the last steps in the process of finding a job, we discussed options that he was interested in. Besides resume writing, I offer personalized testing that scores a person’s abilities. Shimon did not want to get stuck in another job that gave him the same feeling as his first one did, so he was interested in testing that would help him make a good decision this time around. Seeing his results explained a lot. First, we learned that he is the kind of person who needs to work as part of a group, yet as an introvert, needs a job where he did not have to work with people all day. No wonder that teaching a large class for so many hours left him exhausted and
overwhelmed. He was not comfortable performing or speaking in front of large groups of people either. His interest in running a business wasn’t surprising, being that his personality type was someone who works well independently. The issue was that being the boss with no one to answer to would leave him feeling unsettled and questioning his decisions. As a store manager, he would likely end up with a feeling similar to what he felt in his teaching position, with the stress of having to deal with people on a constant basis throughout the day. Bookkeeping was an excellent idea, since his numeric abilities scored extremely high. A combination of his scores, personality and interests gave him a few job options to consider, which we discussed. The most important thing for Shimon was to find a job where he would not be working under tight deadlines or high pressure, since his level of detail and accuracy were intense. His risk-averse nature made him a very calculated decision maker, and he would also be a very systematic organizer who would enjoy problem solving. A bookkeeping position in a non-pressured business that valued accuracy over speed would be an excellent fit. If he wanted to go further, his skills were a winning combination for a successful actuary. He had the entire skill set, personality and logical capabilities to be a top candidate in the field. Being that it included rigorous schooling, testing and licensing, Shimon was not ready to consider it, but is planning to keep it in mind as a future goal. The next step was to find a training course while applying to local entry-level bookkeeping jobs. We updated his resume to match the position he found and sent it out. Now that Shimon had such clarity regarding his natural skills, he was confident that he was an excellent candidate, which came across at interviews. After two interviews, he was offered a position that was low-paying, but the employer offered to train him in. The yeshivah was glad that he had found a better-suited job, his wife was happy that he was doing something that he knew with certainty he would be successful at and Shimon was thrilled to have restored assurance that he was a talented person who had just been in a poor-fitting job. As for me, there was no better feeling in the world knowing that one more family was on the right track. Shaina Keren is a Monsey-based career coach who helps people find jobs they’re good at. CAUGHT CHESED-HANDED “WHOA, WHO TOOK out the garbage?” I whirl around in my kitchen, drops of water dripping from the sink drain in my hand to my onceclean floor as I search for the trash bag that seems to have mysteriously escaped. For a second, I consider the possibility that maybe the garbage has walked itself out to the curb. Af-

ter all, if I were that full to the brim, I wouldn’t be happy sitting around waiting for a miracle either. I hear muffled giggles coming from behind a closet door. I wipe my hands on a dish towel and walk toward the sound. “Mendy! Are you playing hide-and-seek?” He bursts out laughing, his
cheeks flushed with excitement. “No,” he says. “I took out the garbage when you weren’t looking. I hid because I didn’t want to spoil the surprise. Surprise!” Wow, this is something else! For the third day in a row, my eightyear-old son who doesn’t particularly love chores has been taking the trash out without being asked. In a second, something clicks in my brain as I flash back to the first time he did it. I was so pleasantly surprised that I had thanked Mendy profusely and had given him a big hug and kiss. It seems this reaction touched him deeply and he was happy to do it again. If you’ve ever been caught redhanded, you’re probably familiar with this term. Now, if red indicates you’ve been caught doing something
Over the years, as I’ve tried and tested to see what works in my family, I have come to learn that if I keep my eyes and ears open and compliment my children on what they’re doing right, it is way more effective than pointing out their mistakes and shortcomings. Humans are wired to want to please. We all love compliments and want to feel needed and productive. Negative comments may knock us down a peg and cause us to think that we shouldn’t even bother trying. I sit down with a hot cup of coffee for a much-needed break. I find myself at the opposite end of the table where my teenager is doing homework. “Ma, it’s not fair,” she complains. “All my friends come home and are served like a queen and go shopping and to the pizza store and tons of other things and do homework whenever they like. Why do I have to do it before anything else? I never have any fun!” I fortify myself with a delicious sip before saying with a kind smile, “Chany, did you have a hard day at school? We do homework before any other activities.” My daughter grumbles to herself, but continues to power through her schoolwork. I smile to myself as I remember all the lectures and well-meaning drashos I’ve delivered in the past. I’ve defended and explained myself for hours in a misguided attempt to get my children to understand my ways. The most beautiful and touching meshalim went in one ear and out the other. wrong, what would you call being caught doing something right? Blue? Green, perhaps? I have nothing concrete regarding coining a new term, but one thing I have learned for sure: My children learn more from what I catch them doing right than from what I find them doing wrong. Nagging and scolding don’t get me far and definitely do not feel as good as positive reinforcement does.
need long megillos or shiurim as to the why and how. They need short sentences on the what and lots of love. Little sentences are more powerful than dumping a whole speech on them, which kids then either neatly sidestep or brush off, the good along with the bad, the extras tossed away together with the essentials. But these little sentences, on the other hand, seep deep into their soul and actually inscribe themselves into the child’s psyche, so that when my son has a long, white beard and wobbly little toddlers calling him Zaidy, he will still hear me singing: Brush your teeth at night Lein Krias Shema with all your might Negel vasser and close the light Sleep tight! My coffee is done and so is my little trip down memory lane. I am happy to have found better ways to connect with my beloved children and never want to stop learning. Now that party season is here, you just may be invited to some formal events. Best to brush up on those table manners.
TABLE TALK • As part of some job interviews, potential employers include a meal and scrutinize your table manners and social conduct. • Wondering which roll, salad and glasses are yours? Your solids (bread, butter plate, salad) are at the left, and your liquids are at the right. • As hungry as you may be, don’t eat or drink anything (except for a sip of water) before everyone is served and the hostess has begun eating.
• In the past, salad was served after the main course, until California restaurants decided to serve salad first to pacify hungry diners while they waited for their food. Now it is common practice in the U.S. • If you need to cough during a meal, do so into a tissue or napkin, or if that’s not possible, use your left hand. • What if you don’t know how to pronounce a word? Are you allowed to request that food? Yes, just don’t say it; rather point to the item on the menu.
Here are some words that are commonly mispronounced along with their proper pronunciations: Bruschetta: broo-SKET-tuh
Jalapeno: hah-luh-PEYN-yoh
Quinoa: KEEN-wah
Croissant: krwa-SANT
Maraschino: mare-uh-SKEEN-oh
Sherbet: sher-BIT
Espresso: e-SPRES-oh
Parfait: par-FAY
Worcestershire: WUS-tuh-shur
Gnocchi: nYO-kee
Quesadilla: key-suh-DEE-uh

If it’s large, unfold it halfway and place on your lap, fold toward you. If it’s smaller, unfold it completely and cover your lap fully.
At meal’s end, loosely fold your napkin (hiding the soiled parts well). Place it at the middle of your place setting, and if that’s taken by a plate, place it at its left.
Use the napkin throughout the meal to blot or pat

Temporarily leaving the table? Place your napkin on your chair.
SETTING YOUR UTENSILS DOWN
Are you done? Do you still want to eat? Ready for the next course? Let your flatware do the talking. Never put your used utensils directly onto the table.
PROPER PLACE SETTING Utensils are laid in the order of use, from outside in. Forks are always on the left and knives and spoons on the right. Skipping the soup? Skip the soup spoon as well; only lay whichever utensils will be used. Informal Place Setting Table set for salad or first course, soup course and entree (main course). At more formal meals, where additional utensils and glasses are used, they should be laid following the rules above.
EATING SOUP Always spoon the soup away from you and not toward you. Sip from the side of your spoon, and not the front. You may tip the bowl away from you to get the last drops, but put it back down once the soup is in the spoon. When soup is served in a round bowl or cup atop a plate, place your spoon on the underplate between sips and when you’re done.

Hi. Why do you look so frightened?
I hope I won’t be discovered.
Where is our donor Tom?
I can’t be suspected of working with you. Let’s act naturally, as if we are just taking a walk.
As you know, our missionary activity in the last few years depends on your generous donations. You’ve cut down on your donations lately, and it’s affecting us.
Let’s get onto a rowboat, and then we can talk freely.
My income is much less since the Sapir factory opened. They invested a lot of money to develop methods to produce better chocolate for a cheaper price.
Ummm, I know. Believe me, my goal in this country is to support your work. I was raised for this mission — to convert as many people as possible to our religion.
Try anyway. We want to arrange more activities for the weaker sector.
Listen, I’ll write you a big check. I can’t cover it right now, but...
Ugh! We’re in trouble! Go back into the boat quickly so we don’t attract undue attention.

Sp Recap: Gavriel and Tom plan to further cause trouble to Sapir’s factory. Tom receives a letter from the missionaries instructing him to meet them at Rose Park.
