OUT WITH THE STEREOTYPE Thank you for a beautiful magazine from beginning to end. I especially love the design of The Monsey View and how easy it is to read. I was reading Issue #125 and noticed the game called Peeling with Panache “for the men” and was baffled that now in 2017 there is still this stereotype about men not helping out in their homes. My wife is a working mother (as am I a working father), and we both share the responsibilities of maintaining our home equally. I clean, watch the baby, do laundry and even cook dinners when necessary. I spoke to some of my friends about this and found that the same goes on in their households and the men who don’t help out are the minority nowadays. Another point: In the disclaimer for that game, it states: “You may never leave them to babysit again!” Since when do parents babysit? Parents watch and parent their kids. They’re not babysitters. Thank you! G.B.P.

DELICIOUS AND NUTRITIOUS Every time I get The Monsey View, the first thing I get excited over are the recipes. I use only very basic ingredients and my cooking method is simple and in Hungarian style. Therefore, I thank you very much for Leah Stern’s recipes. I keep hearing from family and friends who enjoy them a lot too. When you had three soups featured, they were so nutritious and delicious. I already tried two of them and I can’t wait for next week M&S SHOE REPAIR

THE HEALTH OF OUR CHILDREN There’s something that’s been bothering me that I would like to bounce off your readership. I have an elementary school daughter, and over the past year she has gained a lot of weight due to the school lunches that are served, as well as the lack of exercise. While I appreciate the school system tremendously, I am dumbfounded as to why french fries are considered a main course. Every time my child comes home from school and tells me what was served, I am flabbergasted. Why in the world are our kids eating 90% carbs every lunch time? Where is the protein? A cup of milk? No. That is not a filling protein, and certainly doesn’t work if the child has a milk allergy. To be fair, there are some days that protein is served, but the carbfilled other days seem to be more prevalent. Also, schools are happy to make money through meal programs so they sign up for breakfast, lunch and supper programs. In the course of one day, many children are served five meals and two snacks. (Three so-called meals at school and real breakfast and real supper at home.) Our children are consuming way too many calories and way too many carbs. Not only that, but there is no moderation during lunch time; children help themselves to as much as they want, instead of being served individual portions. Add to this the fact that we have little to no exercise programs in our school system. How are our children supposed to be healthy? Am I the only one bothered by this? A Concerned Mother

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:

EDITION CHAPTER 18

AS IS INEVITABLE, some of our clients will go off plan over Chanukah. I have found, and studies agree, that dieting is like any other skill. It takes practice. This is why most people do great during the week, and then struggle on Shabbos. It is simple: They have more practice with their weekday routine than with Shabbos. Eventually, even Shabbos habits become routine, and it is gratifying to watch as clients truly stop struggling with the challah, kugel and cake that once seemed so impossible to resist. The hardest habits to change, however, are the experiences that happen rarely. This is why yom tov is so difficult even for the most seasoned dieters. Yom tov comes only once in a while. And one yom tov does not look like the next. Pesach doesn’t look like Sukkos, and Chanukah doesn’t look like Rosh Hashanah. The foods of Shavuos are not the same foods we struggle with on Simchas Torah. This is why dieters who are successful all year long tend to derail over holidays. Knowing this doesn’t seem helpful. In fact, it seems depressing... Am I doomed to gain weight every single yom tov? Will I spend half of each month undoing the damage of the previous yom tov? Actually, knowing that self-control is a learned skill, just like sewing or typing, is an awesome discovery. It means that the more you practice self-control, the better you get at it! I often have clients sit down in my office and bemoan the fact that they no longer have self-control. “I started out so strong,” they tell me, “but now I can’t seem to control myself!” I have a theory on this; hear me out. When we are fleishig, do we use selfcontrol in order not to eat cheesecake?

No. We aren’t exercising our self-control muscle in that situation at all. We are using habit, yiras Shamayim, chinuch, etc., but definitely not self-control. It isn’t even an option to eat the milchigs once we are fleishig. Self-control by definition is that there are two opposing forces, and we are choosing the proper choice. Milchigs after fleishigs isn’t even an option. So how does dieting fit in here? When we first begin a diet, we are following our program’s instructions. We are desperate to lose weight and understand that the plan we were given will work if we do the work. We are almost “afraid” to cheat for fear of getting it wrong, not losing, being disappointed when we get on the scale, and possibly disappointing our nutrition counselor

Am I doomed to gain weight

every single yom tov? as well. This is great! This cautiousness and motivation are what propel most people to success at the beginning of their diet. However, what this does not do is build self-control. The thought of cheating doesn’t even enter our mind! I have clients who can lose 10, 20 or even 30 pounds without ever cheating, without ever even being tempted to cheat, and therefore, without building selfcontrol. At some point, though, the newness of the plan wears off, and real life kicks back into gear. Temptation rears its head, and self-control once again becomes necessary. It is at this point that we have to fight the two opposing forces and build our resistance muscle. So when I have a client come in and ask,

“Where has my self-control gone?” the answer may very well be, “You never really had it! You never built it up. The honeymoon phase of the diet didn’t require selfcontrol, because cheating was not an option!” It is at this point that I tell my clients that if they want self-control, they need to start to build it, bit by bit, temptation by temptation. No “cheat” is too small to fight, because it isn’t the 50 or 100 calories they are fighting. It isn’t the sugarcoated nuts or the tiny scoop of kugel. It is the skill of selfcontrol. And when you build up your “resistance muscle,” you are powerful! By practicing self-control with small things, day in and day out, you develop the ability to resist larger things, like doughnuts on Chanukah, extra kugel on Shabbos and desserts at restaurants. So just like your weekday routine can ultimately become easy because of repetition, your non-routine experiences can become easier as well. Because although we can’t repeat Chanukah over and over again, we can practice strengthening our resistance! So when Chanukah comes around next year, you will be well-equipped to fight temptation! Parshas

Vayigash

By: Malka Schneps

BACK WHEN MALKY* WAS LEARNING IN seminary, hot supper was available for an hour each evening. The girls could go to the dining hall at any point during this hour and stand in line to wait for their turn. As there were many girls and only one line, the wait was sometimes long. One day, there was a very impatient girl waiting behind Malky in line. Every few minutes this girl would jab her tray into Malky’s back, as if Malky could somehow make the line move faster. The jabbing girl stood in line behind Malky again the next day. And the day after that. In fact, this went on day after day for weeks on end. After a while, Malky realized that it just didn’t make sense logically that no matter what time she arrived at the dining hall, that same girl always arrived right behind her, ready to dig her tray into Malky’s back. Malky was sure Hashem was somehow testing her through this situation, but she just couldn’t figure out what she was meant to do. Was she supposed to remain calm and not get annoyed at the girl? Malky was already doing so, at least outwardly. What then? Finally, Malky came to what she felt was the correct response: She decided she should be mevater and let the girl go ahead of her in line. That evening, the girl was behind Malky in line, as always. As soon as the girl began shoving her tray into Malky’s back, Malky allowed the girl to take her own place in the line. We cannot know for sure whether Malky’s dealings with that girl had been more of a test than any other situation in life, and if so whether Malky had made the correct choice that day to “pass” the test, but one thing was clear: Malky never saw that girl again after that day. In last week’s parsha, Yehudah and his brothers encounter their brother Yosef, but believe him to be simply an Egyptian viceroy. Yehudah had offered himself to Yaakov as a guarantor that Binyamin would return home safely, yet Binyamin was found to possess the “stolen” goblet. Yosef offered Yehudah the option that Binyamin could remain as Yosef’s slave, and Yehudah can return home to his father. The situation could not look more bleak for Yehudah. How would he respond to the enormous challenge? The answer is hidden within the first pasuk of this

46 / THE MONSEY VIEW

week’s parsha: “Vayigash eilav Yehudah, vayomer bi adoni…” (Bereishis 44:18) The pshat translation of this is that Yehudah approached the viceroy of Mitzrayim and respectfully addressed him: “Yehudah approached him, and he said, ‘Please, my lord…’” The Sfas Emes takes us deeper into the meaning of these words. The phrase “Vayigash eilav Yehudah” means “Yehudah approached him.” We infer that the word “him” refers to Yosef, but the Sfas Emes informs us that Yehudah approached “Him” — Hashem Yisborach. Yehudah recognized that the crisis he faced was from Hashem, and chose to draw closer to Hashem. The Sfas Emes infers that if a person is facing challenges in life, he should recognize that they come from Hashem, and he should bring himself closer to Hashem. The second half of the original quote from this week’s parsha is “vayomer bi adoni,” which is typically translated as a formal address to a leader: “Please, my lord…” The Sfas Emes cites the Arizal that the words “bi Adoni” can also mean “my Master is within me,” referring to Hashem. On a more basic level, we see that the four letters of Hashem’s name are contained within the name Yehudah, but at the same time we see that this phrase connotes a deep relationship. By drawing close to Hashem, Yehudah’s relationship with Hashem deepened. We see the consequence: Yosef could not hold himself back, and he revealed himself to his brothers. By acknowledging that the circumstances came from Hashem, Yehudah saved himself and his brothers. Life is full of challenges, great and small. In the opening story, Malky faced a very small difficulty compared to what others go through in life (sickness, poverty, etc.), yet Malky did not dismiss the recurring incident as a mere nuisance, nor did she blame the girl for her rude behavior. Instead, Malky recognized that everything in life comes from Hashem, and she used that knowledge to grow in ruchniyus and become a more giving person, even if only slightly. May we all strive to recognize the true Source of all our challenges, and use them as a springboard to move closer to Hashem. As the Sfas Emes demonstrates, doing so may very well be the means through which we merit a yeshuah.

Monsey’s newest

ABA PROGRAM

helps kids blossom “Imagine entering a wedding hall. All around you are smiling faces — but you don’t know any of them. You’ve come only because your husband works for the baal simcha; you have to be here. How do you feel? Think about it.” I closed my eyes and focused on the image. I saw myself alone, albeit in a sea of people. All around me, women were paired off with others they knew, shmoozing, smiling, enjoying. And I? I stood at the entrance to the ballroom, my hands fidgeting with my pocketbook, eyes scanning the room. The acrid taste of anxiety was rising in my throat, and I felt lost. I was not quite sure what to do. Where was I to sit? Whom was I to speak to? Or was I to just busy myself with the food? As I stood like a wallflower, I realized that I didn’t like this feeling. I didn’t like it all. My eyes opened, the activity complete. It was a chilly winter day when the founder of Monsey’s newest ABA program made time to speak with me about the revolutionary services that are positively impacting the lives of children in our town. In order to understand what some children experience in regard to social situations, Mrs. Etti Parnes had me visualize the wedding scene mentioned above. “For many children, that’s how they feel on a daily basis. The behavioral nuances of the world are complicated for them. Every moment is spent trying to figure out how to behave in any given situation,” my interviewee, Etti Parnes, told me. “Our goal is to take the guesswork out, helping them understand and integrate appropriate social behavior into their lives.” With almost 30 years’ experience helping children master social skills, Mrs. Parnes is familiar with success — and the name of her business reflects that. Skills for Success comes on the heels of decades of helping young people reach their full potential. Many children who have worked with Mrs. Parnes have gone on to lead successful, productive lives. And now Etti Parnes has brought her expertise to Monsey so that every child can benefit. Though Skills for Success only officially opened its doors in September of this year, Mrs. Parnes and her team of highly experienced therapists have already made major differences in the lives of children from all over the Jewish community. It isn’t math or reading or spelling that Skills for Success focuses on, but behavioral skills instead — making them the shoo-in choice for those who

need help in this area. “As a community, we’ve gone so far in the school system to help those who need educational assistance,” Etti told me, “but when it comes to behavioral and social skills, the schools seem confounded, not knowing how to help the children.” “So that’s where you come in,” I said, urging her to tell me more. “Yes. These children are bright and do not necessarily have any learning difficulties, but their behavior affects their schooling.” As a case in point, Mrs. Parnes told me of a very young boy who was expelled from cheder last year. Though only in the lower elementary grades, the boy’s behavior was out of control. He bullied other children, repeatedly causing them trauma, and frequently disrupted the class. To salvage the child’s future, Skills for Success invested much effort into working with him, and though the cheder had officially refused to accept the boy into their ranks once again, within six weeks of the new school year, his behavior was so well-balanced that he was able to return to cheder for part of the day. “Not all cases are so severe,” Etti made sure to emphasize. “Some children just don’t know what to say and when, and can blurt out random thoughts in the middle of class. Or they just don’t have the skills to engage with friends and will always stand on the side watching the fun and games. I also find that rebbis and teachers get especially frustrated when a child has a lack of boundaries and touches other people, stands too close or draws undue attention to themselves or to

FAST FACTS Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the process of studying behavior in order to put into place appropriate behavior interventions. Many times children with social difficulties may have average or above-average IQs. Social deficits manifest themselves in various forms, such as lack of self-control when speaking, jumping from topic to topic, overstepping others’ personal boundaries or being unaware of one’s social appearance. Skills for Success has successfully integrated children socially to reach full potential through ABA therapy. Skills for Success has worked handin-hand with many different schools and chedarim in our community, helping children both during and after school hours. Skills for Success makes skill-building fun, and children look forward to it! Some activities include arts ‘n crafts, Lego robotics, karate and music, which are ideal for engaging children and helping them accept guidance.

52 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 20, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

others at the wrong time. They often think the child is acting out—,” she paused for effect and then continued, “but these children just don’t know when something is socially appropriate or not. We help them learn these skills.” Mrs. Parnes explained that the most vital part of helping socially challenged children reach their full potential is the invaluable trio of parent, school and therapist support. “Everyone has to be on the same page, knowing how to guide the child each step of the way. It’s a partnership that greatly benefits the child.” Having established working relationships with many schools and chedarim across Monsey, Etti Parnes and her team have worked hard to make sure that communication is fluid between therapists, school and the guardians. And it’s not just communication solely on a professional level; Skills for Success believes in empowering the family, as well, with tremendous knowledge and support. To that end, Skills for Success provides a plethora of learning opportunities for parents, teaching them what ABA is, which strategies are most effective and how to use these strategies to strengthen positive behaviors and decrease inappropriate ones. Parents walk out having learned a new, awesome way to communicate with their children! As for the children themselves, it feels like fun and games. “Children who are engaged in activities they enjoy while in a warm, safe environment open up and can blossom tremendously.” Here, in the Skills for Suc-

cess facilities, happiness permeates the air. Each child feels as if he is given a grand opportunity to do the things he loves. Activities include painting, baking, karate classes and robotic Lego activities. There are groups where children can bond with their peers while having fun, and most importantly, there are undercurrents of positive reinforcement. “We target deficits while giving the child the opportunity to practice skills in a regular, pleasant environment. This enables the skills they learn to really become a part of them.” Some children with social difficulties have a hard time being organized or may neglect their personal appearance, not realizing when their hair needs to be smoothed or their shirt tucked in. That, too, is a part of learning social skills, and children walk out of Skills for Success both looking and acting put together. “How long does it take to see improvement?” I queried, wondering what the general timespan for transformation is. “That’s the million-dollar question that every parent asks,” I was told. “Every child is unique. Some children have more complex issues that need to be addressed, while others only have a few issues that are quickly resolved. Every child deserves the chance to succeed and reach his potential. We’ll work with him until he gets there.” If we’re judging by the thousands of children who have already gone on to reach social success under Mrs. Parnes and her team, I’d say that Skills for Success is full of success indeed.

A Life-Changing Story Delivering the Perfect Words at the Perfect Time Based on a lecture by Rabbi Fischel Schachter

M

My career as a rabbi began with storytelling, and I would travel from school to school and captivate the hearts and minds of children. Usually enthralling and exciting, the stories were well-liked and attended by many children. However, there was one particular time when matters went awry. I had told a particular story in about fifteen other locations, but this time, for some reason, the children were not interested. One of the kids, in fact, began to sarcastically and facetiously shout every so often, “Haha-ha! That’s so funny…” Soon many of the other children caught on to the rude laughter of the child and in unison shouted, “Haha-ha! That’s so funny…” They were clearly having a better time repeating this line than listening to my story. As I stood there with half an hour remaining to speak without any other teacher in the room, I began to think to myself, “My storytelling career is over.” At one point I considered facing the children and saying, “You are a bunch of mechutzafim!” but I figured that it would not go over too well. Then I thought about storming out of the room and making a scene. Then it suddenly hit me. I began to think, “Listen to yourself. You are angry at the kids, angry at the principal and basically angry at everybody. There is only one person you are not frustrated with: yourself. Maybe Hashem wants something from you right now?” And so, needing to think quickly,

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 20, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

I realized that perhaps for some reason Hashem was indirectly telling me to switch the story. And so I did. I had heard a story that very day from Rabbi Boruch Rabinowitz, principal of the school Torah Vodaath, about Rabbi Yaakov Meir Shechter. Taking in a deep breath and hoping for the best, I began telling the kids the following episode: Rav Yaakov Meir was blessed with many children. Unfortunately, however, many of them were not well. In particular, his daughter was very sick, both physically and emotionally, and was confined to a wheelchair. With an unpromising future, she was depressed and dispirited. One day, Rav Yaakov Meir decided to take his daughter up high in the mountains in Ramat Shlomo. As he pushed her along, she took in the breathtaking sight surrounding her and then turned to her father and asked, “Tatty, do you love me?” “Of course I do,” Rav Yaakov Meir replied. “Do you love me more than anything else in the world?” she persisted. “Yes, I really do.” “Will you do anything for me?” she asked again. “Yes, I will do anything possible for you,” he answered. “If that is so,” continued his daughter, “I want you to push me off the cliff. I am in pain and depressed. There is no hope for my life. Push me off the cliff; my life is full of misery.” Looking down at his daughter, Rav Yaakov Meir said,

“I cannot do that.” “Why not?” she sternly asked. “You said you will do anything for me!” “It is true that I said I love you,” explained her father, “but my love pales in comparison to the love Hashem has for you. And if Hashem loves you that much, I cannot let my love get in the way of His. Right now He is giving you a heart that is beating and lungs that are letting you breathe. He clearly loves you dearly.” As I finished relating this story, I left the room. The principal, noting my departure and hearing the story I had just told, turned to me and said, “We called you for Chanukah, not for Tisha B’Av.” But I wasn’t going to explain myself, and so I continued on home. Later that night, the phone rang. It was a parent of one of the children from the school. Thinking to myself that I will most certainly be told, “How could you have said such a story? My child cannot go to sleep at night! I was also a rascal when I was a kid, and I still ended up alright!” I prepared myself to hear a long-winded speech. But it was nothing of that nature. The father said, “I want to thank you very much.” I wasn’t sure if I heard him correctly, until he explained what he meant. “I also have a similar situation at home with a child who is not well. All my other children are taking it very hard; I’m forcing them to go to therapy and talk their feelings through. I have one son, however, who does not talk at all. He doesn’t say a word. He is the most depressed about the situation of all the children. Today, however, when he came home, he said to me, ‘I want to BY: ELAN PERCHIK

tell you a story.’ He proceeded to tell me the story you related today, and then asked me, ‘Does Hashem love our sister?’ I assured him that Hashem loves her dearly, putting him at ease. It was the first time we had a healthy conversation in a long while. Rabbi, I cannot thank you enough. You have helped my son and our family immensely.” As I listened to this father speak, I knew there was a reason my first story did not go over well. Hashem wished for me to tell this other story and change the life of a young child. The father concluded by asking me, “How did you know by looking at the kids which story to tell? You did a great job!” “Experience,” I said as I let out a smile, “it’s all experience.” Sometimes we are thrown a challenge in life that seems overwhelming and impossible to handle. It may be a child misbehaving or difficulties at home. But we would be wise to realize that at that very moment Hashem is speaking to us. He is telling us, “You can do this! You can overcome this situation!” And believe it or not, when we muster the strength to deal with whatever faces us, the results we produce may be more than ever expected. Instead of just telling another great story, we tell a life-changing story. Rabbi Fischel Schachter is a highly acclaimed and much-loved scholar, international lecturer, storyteller and author. His witty, charming, warm and down-to-earth style continues to grab the attention of and delight his multitudes of students. Among his many illustrious projects, Rabbi Schachter is a rebbi in Yeshiva Torah Vodaath in Brooklyn, NY.

Mahwah Backpedals on Eruv/Parks Bans JUST DAYS AFTER JACKSON Township passed a resolution allowing the construction of eruvim within its boundaries, the Mahwah town council voted unanimously to discontinue plans to enact two controversial ordinances of its own. Both Jackson and Mahwah have found themselves facing lawsuits over their respective attempts to limit the growth of the Orthodox Jewish community in recent months. Residents at numerous Mahwah town council meetings this summer complained about a newly constructed eruv and also expressed concern about local parks being swamped by out-of-state visitors, prompting the town to ban non-residents from using township parks. Mahwah was later slapped with a lawsuit by

the state attorney general, which charged that limiting the parks’ usage was discriminatory and violated the terms of financial grants that had been used to build the public parks. The Journal News reported that the town council approved an ordinance last Thursday that would allow local parks to be used by both residents and visitors. A resolution that had been introduced, but never approved, by the Mahwah town council, which would have banned anyone from attaching PVC pipes to electrical poles as part of an eruv, was also retracted. Mahwah town council members refused to comment on the resolution on the advice of the township lawyer.

Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet later voiced his opinion outside council chambers, saying that the town council neglected to inform town residents of the significant legal liabilities that could have resulted had the resolutions not been retracted. “They are hiding from you that if they failed to do so, the attorney general can come to Mahwah to press civil or criminal bias charges,” said Laforet. Laforet and the town council have been at odds for months, with Laforet insisting that the town council’s proposed eruv and park bans were discriminatory and could ultimately leave Mahwah residents liable for millions in damages and legal fees.

Traffic Relief Coming to Woodbury Commons IT HAS BECOME A MAJOR tourist destination, drawing 13 million visitors each year and creating massive headaches for anyone attempting to drive to or near the area. Relief, however, may be in sight as a major construction project has begun to alleviate traffic at the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlet in Harriman. The $150 million project was announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo in February, and according to The Journal News, includes numerous changes that will benefit not only shoppers at the

60 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 20, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

outlet center, but also those traveling to and from Kiryas Joel and the Catskills. Among the multiple improvements to be made are: adding lanes in both directions of Route 32, reconfiguring Route 17’s Exit 131 which leads to the Thruway, introducing

cashless tolling to the Thruway’s Harriman Toll Plaza and constructing a new entrance and exit to the heavily used shopping center. The governor’s plan had initially been slated to be completed by 2024, but was bumped up five years and is now expected to be completed by November 2019. Traffic jams at the shopping center on big sale weekends have stretched as far as 15 miles on several occasions. Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus described the planned construction as “one of the most important projects for the Hudson Valley.”

Winter has arrived, along with coats, shovels and all that it brings, and we cozy up indoors, summer but a memory. Bare trees appear to wait in anticipation: When will the first snowfall come? Snow offers artists a nearly unlimited amount of material to work with and unlimited ideas to go with it. See what artists and plain old folks like you and me have come up with!

The Snowman What is cold and silent but balls of fun? A snowman! While there is no clear documentation of the first snowman, a researcher discovered mention of one in a book from the fourteenth century. The earliest known photograph of a snowman was captured by a Welsh photographer in 1853. The world record for the tallest snowman ever built was set in 2008 in Maine. Named in honor of a U.S. Senator, it stood at an impressive 122 feet and 1 inch tall!

The Artist A man by the name of Simon Beck is the world’s most famous snow artist. Thirteen years ago, after a day of skiing, Beck decided to draw a large star in the snow on a frozen lake. The following day, he viewed the scene from the ski lift, and only then did he realize how absolutely incredible his piece of art was. After the next snowfall, he created something even more spectacular, and at that moment, snow art was born. Since childhood, Beck has always enjoyed drawing geometric designs, and this is evident in his creations. Remarkably, the results always look perfect, even though he works on the ground, without a view from above. Using a pair of specialized compasses and engineering techniques, Beck follows a pattern that he puts down on paper first. Once on the snow, he measures a couple of points, and once they’re down accurately, he fills in the rest by simply using his mind’s eye. Beck prefers to create his drawings on frozen lakes because those give him a perfectly level area to work off. Each piece of art covers from two and a half to 10 acres and can take up to 12 hours to complete!

The Hotels Ice hotels can be found in several countries (climate permitting) and are rebuilt every winter. If an ice hotel doesn’t turn enough of a profit? No problem! The owners can just leave it to melt. No need to maintain this piece of real estate! Ice hotels are constructed using only snow, ice and what is known as snice, which is a kind of frozen water that is something between snow and ice and is used as bonding between ice blocks, similar to mortar used between bricks. Besides for the structure itself, the furniture, fixtures and decor in an ice hotel are also made purely of snow and ice. A night at an ice hotel can cost between $300 and $3,000. Though the temperature in these buildings are cold, usually below freezing, it is warmer inside than outside. But who cares about comfort? It’s one more experience to cross off your bucket list!

The hotel takes approximately 50 workers a month and a half to build each year, and it remains open from the first week of January until the last week in March. Ice Hotel is not the destination for someone looking for a comfortable place to stay! Patrons sleep on ice beds covered in wood and mattresses, though they receive a sleeping bag before they go to sleep. But no heating!

The Sculptures Ice sculpting is a popular art that is more complicated than it sounds. Sculptors seek ice that is clear, which depends both on the type of water and the method of freezing used, and they go to great lengths to procure that perfect block of ice. Sometimes that may mean having them produced by machines. Since the lifespan of ice depends on its environment, ice sculptures are considered extravagant pieces of art and look as impressive. Sculptures range in size from pieces that are a few inches tall to building-size projects. For ice sculptors extraordinaires who are passionate about their work, there are several ice sculpting festivals around the world. The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival in China is the largest such festival in the world and includes the world’s largest ice sculptures. The building-size ice structures featured there are created from ice blocks taken directly from the Songhua River and are turned into masterpieces of art with the use of cleverly positioned multi-colored lights. Aside from participants who take part in activities, the breathtaking sculptures featured at the festival also attract tourists from all over the world. Snow sculpting is another popular art, often done in front of crowds of spectators. Sculptures are created from densely packed blocks of snow weighing between 20 and 30 tons, and like ice sculptures, are often featured in festivals worldwide. The Saint Paul Winter Carnival, held annually in Saint Paul, Minnesota, has an interesting history. Back in 1885, a New York reporter, unimpressed by the cold and empty streets of Saint Paul in the winter, wrote that it was “another Siberia, unfit for human habitation.” Saint Paul Chamber of Commerce very much resented this piece of reporting, and launched their Winter Carnival simply to prove that the opposite was true. The first carnival took place in 1886, and they continued being held on and off into the twentieth century. Out of respect to the countries at war, it was not held during World War II, and in 1946, the festival resumed, this time annually. Today, the Winter Carnival features ice and snow sculptures, bobsledding and other activities, and every few years, the festival is home to its iconic Ice Palace, created from ice taken from the Minnesota lakes. Whether snow or ice, simple H2o can certainly spark the imagination!

WOW! LARGE MAIL PILE TODAY. As you head into the house, you rifle through the heap of envelopes to catch a glimpse of something exciting in the stack. First up, an invitation. Oooh! Tante Shprintza is marrying off her youngest next month! How time flies… Mentally, you go through your closet deciding what you’ll wear to the occasion as you tackle the next envelope. Hey, the girls’ school is making a parents’ event in two weeks. That means two things to pick out of the closet… The next envelope elicits a squeal of delight — class reunion! You’ve been out of school now for, what, sixteen years? That makes three pieces of clothing… Maybe you could get a new sweater? You know, something fresh for a change. Next envelope: energy bill. Oh.

88 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 20, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

OH, OH, OH. You could think you were running a yeshivah dormitory by the looks of things. What’s up with these hair-raising amounts? There goes the new sweater... You may not be running a yeshivah dormitory, but if the energy systems in your house are not running efficiently, your heating, and subsequently, your bills, will amount to quite a significant amount. Keeping your home warm and cozy in a cost-effective way will make your house welcoming, healthy and safe. (And then you’ll have some cash left over to revamp your wardrobe!) Let’s take a walk through the house to see where the draft may be entering your humble abode. Most houses in the U.S. are constructed from a whole lot of lumber. If you’ve ever watched a house going up, you probably saw lots of spaces between the wooden beams and different parts used to construct the house. As the air flows and circulates, it will enter through these spaces and even the lumber itself, as wood is not an airtight material. Being that air temperature will change according to its surroundings, warm air in your home will not stay warm for long when it comes in contact with the greater force of cold air seeping in. Therefore, contractors take great care in creating a barrier and sealing off the air in your home from coming in contact with the outer elements. Meet Mr. Insulation. Standard fiberglass insulation does a good job in trapping air between

its layers and slowing the process of air temperature change. It is not so efficient in sealing small cracks, though, unless it is manually pushed into those gaps. This is usually a time-consuming and tedious task, so most builders will not go that far when installing the insulation. Sometimes it is also not practical to squeeze the thick insulation into thin cracks, hence the new invention of spray foam. Spray foam, which is liquid when sprayed, will get into the tiniest nooks and crannies and will dry as a hard blob, blocking off even the tiniest sliver of a crack. The bubbles created in the foam will trap air, creating an environment with an almost no-movement possibility. Even if the outdoor temps fall below freezing point, the foam will not allow for any type of air flow, acting as a very strong and effective insulation. So, now you have this great idea. Why use fiberglass insulation? Shpritz up the whole wall with the miraculous foam, right? Well, although no venting will occur in the walls when using foam, it is quite an impossible task to get anything through the walls when it is “foamed” solid. Think electrical wires, pipes, telephone lines… But it does make a great option for all those troublesome, drafty areas. Some of these foam insulations are quite sticky and almost

impossible to remove from clothing. When spray foam is used, it will also emit a strong chemical odor that makes using face masks necessary. For this reason, it is also important for the house to be ventilated properly during and after insulating. For people or children with chemical sensitivities, it would be wise to get out of the house for 24 to 48 hours, as it can temporarily worsen eczema, psoriasis, hyperactivity, fatigue and allergies. All this is wonderful when you’re building your house. But what if your walls are up and standing for a while and you have a draft issue? To add wall insulation, you will need a professional to drill small holes through the inside or outside wall and blow loose-fill material, which is made up of tiny insulating particles, between the studs. These small particles can be hazardous when inhaled, therefore workers will wear protective clothing when handling this kind of insulation. They can also be quite harsh on the skin if any contact occurs, so skin protection is also a must. Once the walls are filled and the substance settles, it is not a concern for the house occupants. What if your walls are fine, but you feel cold air seeping in around the windows? Most windows that are sold today are double-paned. Two glass sheets are glued to a

metal frame approximately an inch wide, eliminating the need for a double window. This works just like a thermos, keeping the air between the two sheets of glass very stable, thereby slowing down the process of the outer air cooling the inner, warm air. It also eliminates the foggy window scenario. Even if your window is not double-paned, if installed properly, it should do a good job keeping the cold out. Drafty windows are usually an installation error or have a condition called air pockets. When you have air pockets, the window is not the culprit! Air is flowing into the wall through little cracks or spaces and breaking into your home between the window frame or mechanism. If that’s the case, a good inspection is necessary to seal the problematic area properly. Some common problem areas can be found where siding or stucco meets the foundation, as well as around doors and windows. Sometimes your walls are good and the windows are fine, but what about your door? You may find it surprising, but most contractors will agree that a door is the trickiest thing to install in a home. If it is not absolutely and perfectly aligned with the frame, the house will always be drafty. Sometimes, as the house settles, there is some shifting, and doors can allow the home to get drafty in the process. In such cases, a storm door is a great option during the winter months, though it can get quite hot in the summer and proper ventilation should be considered. Apart from installing a storm door, there is an assortment of gadgets to be found in

92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 20, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

housewares and home-improvement stores that can help to keep cold air from entering through the door. Things like door guards and under-door bumpers are not expensive and can make a big difference. Think you’ve got the house covered? Let’s talk floors. Flooring will make a huge difference in the temperature of your house. Stone and ceramic floors, as pretty as they may be, aren’t very heat-absorbent. Even with the heating in your home on a comfortable setting, they will usually be cold to the touch and do not create an insulated environment. (Time to get fuzzy bunny slippers for those little toddler feet running barefoot…) Vinyl and other man-made flooring will be a little more heat-absorbent and will keep your home a few degrees warmer. Wood, as in parquet floors, for example, is great at keeping in the heat and can even provide somewhat of an insulation. For the best winter deal, invest in carpet, or at least some large throw rugs that can be removed in warmer weather. Spreading carpet is like wrapping your house with a blanket; it acts as a very strong insulator. While proper insulation care will hopefully make the total on that energy bill something that doesn’t make you break out in a sweat, we shouldn’t forget about the real warmth in your home, which won’t come from carpet or foam. It’s the warm heart and happy radiation from a Yiddishe mamme that truly makes a house a snug and cozy haven.

THE THREE TOP CULPRITS FOR ESCAPING HEAT 1. In 35% of homes, the heat escapes via the roof, as seen in this image. The home’s escaping heat is what thaws the snow.

3. Rim joists (the perimeter of a wood floor framing system) are also spots for losing a lot of heat, and they must be insulated well to prevent that. Additional places where proper insulation is important

A well-insulated home = reduced energy bills

2. Overhangs are often not insulated properly, allowing heat to escape.

Winter: Whether you love it or not, it’s here. And while for most of us that means staying indoors in overheated houses, there are some of us who are ready to brave the weather for a bit of fresh air. And then there are those in the middle: people in transit who just may have a bit more exposure to the great outdoors than they’d otherwise like. Every year, motorists become stranded while traveling and have to wait for help to arrive or seek help by foot. Many of them are completely unprepared for cold weather and unintentionally put their lives at risk. With a little foresight and bit of knowledge, even those with little outdoors experience can survive an unexpected venture into a winter wonderland. Here’s what you need to know. PLAN AHEAD Whether you are going for a full day outdoors or just a quick drive from one place to another, try to keep your person and/or vehicle stocked with these basic life-saving items:

• High-energy, portable foods such as nuts, granola bars and chocolate • Water • Multiple layers of clothing, including a change of socks Of course, there are many fan-

tastic products beyond this basic list that can make survival even easier, but these are the items that you should never be without. RECOGNIZING THE DANGERS When it comes to cold weather survival, there are three main things that can bring a person down: frostbite, hypothermia and hypoglycemia. Frostbite Frostbite is what happens when the water molecules in skin cells freeze. Once frozen, those cells die pretty quickly, causing damage to muscles and the nervous system. Frostbitten skin can turn a range of colors, from white to red to black. Depending on the severity of the frostbite, digits can fall off from the body or need to be surgically amputated, making frostbite a serious concern. The single most worrying factor when it comes to frostbite is actually not the temperature; it is the wind. For every increase in wind speed, the chances of developing fatal frostbite increase, and any exposed body part can quickly fall victim if the conditions are harsh

Cold Water Immersion Falling into icy water is never something one wants to do, but unfortunately, it does happen to some. Knowing the proper way to respond to cold water immersion is crucial. • Cold water shock happens when the skin comes into contact with cold water. Physiological changes occur immediately in the body, causing gasping, hyperventilation and panic. The heart begins to race and blood pressure rises, and the intense stress on the body can cause cardiac arrest in some individuals. It is very important to try to remain calm, still the heart rate and slow the breathing. Until the body calms, one should not attempt escape, but simply hang on to something sturdy to prevent submersion. Cold water shock, or the torso reflex, passes within one to three minutes if a person avoids panic. At that point, the person can safely attempt an escape from the water. • Do not try to climb out of the water using your upper body. It is easiest to allow your feet to float up horizontally behind you and then kick your way out.

enough. The most important thing to do in a cold, windy environment is to seek shelter and keep the body as protected as possible. Frostnip, the precursor to frostbite, is often the first sign of trouble. It causes the skin to become pale and numb, though still pliable. Frostbite, on the other hand, causes stiffness, and the damage is often not repairable. As soon as a person suspects frostnip, they must take measures to rewarm the area and prevent the condition from worsening. The simplest way to do this is to use body heat to thaw the area. The armpits, specifically, are the warmest location of the body and provide the best area for rewarming. If shelter is available, there are other methods of rewarming, such as soaking the affected area in warmish water. Do note, however, that if there is a chance of a rewarmed digit refreezing, do not attempt to rewarm, as the cycle of warming-freezing-warming causes additional injury. Medical help should be sought as soon as possible if frostbite is suspected. Hypothermia Hypothermia is the state in which external cold begins to affect internal temperature regulation. The body’s normal core temperature is 98.6 degrees; hypothermia begins when the core drops to 95 degrees. It may seem like only a small change, but the body requires its core to be within a specific range of temperatures to function properly. Once hypothermia begins, vital organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys and brain begin to shut down.

• Escape should be attempted as soon as the torso reflex lessens, as most people only have between three and five minutes before muscles become incapacitated by cold water. Trenchfoot One of the staples the U.S. Army requires every soldier to carry is a change of socks. Why? Because of trenchfoot, one of the number-one enemies of anyone who needs to be on his feet. Feet that are wet with water or sweat lose heat 25% faster than dry feet, and if wet for long enough, causes the body to shunt blood circulation away from the area in an effort to prevent heat loss. Lack of oxygen being supplied to the feet causes tissue to die and can result in permanent damage and loss of limb. Feet must be kept dry!

To help prevent hypothermia: • Dress in layers, with the layers closest to the body made of material that wick away wetness. (See FYI for more information.) It is vital to MILD stay dry. HYPOTHERMIA • Body heat can be shared by individuals, such as by placing an infant • Shivering inside a parent’s coat or by sharing a sleeping bag if one is available. • Clumsy • Eating carbohydrates, proteins, sugars and drinking warm drinks coordination can increase bodily heat somewhat. Alcohol should not be consumed • Pallor as it causes the blood vessels to dilate and more heat to be lost. For severe cases of hypothermia, one should drink only warm sugar water SEVERE every 15 minutes. HYPOTHERMIA • Heating packs can be placed on the carotid arteries which run down • Slurred speech the sides of the neck to warm blood flow throughout the body. • Low energy • Keep the head covered! Most heat is lost through the head. The neck, • Feeling overheated wrists and ankles also need to be covered well. or numb • Avoid wetness at all costs! (And daven!) • Never sit or lie down directly on the earth. Make a bed of grass or leaves or put some other insulation in between you and the ground to prevent loss of body heat. HYPOGLYCEMIA The third most significant danger of being in a very cold environment is the deficiency in glucose that may develop. It is natural for the body to automatically begin converting energy into warmth when chilled, causing blood sugar to drop very quickly. One of the inherent dangers of hypoglycemia is impaired cognitive ability, rendering it hard to think clearly and make wise decisions — both vital survival skills. Eat simple sugars, carbohydrates and/or proteins to maintain glucose levels. For this reason it is important to always have items such as nuts, chocolate or granola bars on your person whenever you venture out during the winter months. Similarly, it is important stay hydrated. Keep in mind that during cold weather the feeling of thirst may be absent, leading, chas v’shalom, to potential dehydration. Snow can be melted for drinking, but avoid eating snow as is. Ingesting snow forces the body to work harder to heat itself, depleting energy at an increased speed. It can also chill the core, quickening the onset of hypothermia.

w o n S int We Paplaced this first on You don’t even have to look out the window to know that it’s snowing. You hear it in the collective cries of joy as you hazily roll over to the other side. Though you have to nudge the youngsters out of bed each morning, somehow, on snowy off-days they’re up at the crack of dawn. You hear the sound of stomping snow boots receding downstairs and shlep your weary bones out of bed to find your kids all geared up for some long-anticipated snow fun. Before you can utter a word, they’re out the door, their squeals of laughter echoing off the banks of white. You curl up on the sofa with a freshly brewed coffee and soak up its aromas as you savor the early-morn stillness. And you get that niggling feeling (or shall we call it experience) that the initial excitement will wear off too early in the day, leaving hours still to be filled. Here we present to you 10 Outdoor Boredom-Busters that will keep your kids physically engaged and mentally stimulated throughout the day. The hills you sweated over in the summer heat? They’ll come in handy now.

the list because not only is it an exciting snow craft on its own, but it can be implemented in some of the other snow activities as well. Making snow paint is fairly simple. All it takes is water and coloring. Fill bottles and use paint brushes for finer art, or fill spray bottles and have fun creating tie-dyed snow! Washable kids’ paint is also an option.

Tic Sn -Tac ow Carve a grid into the snow, and use crossed twigs and pinecones as player pieces.

w o Sn ling Fill Bow empty seltzer bottles slightly with snow to keep them from toppling in the wind, and set them up in bowling pin fashion (4-3-2-1). Using snowballs, aim to topple as many bottles as you can.

ing temperatures? That’s right! Bubbles aren’t just fun in the summer; they’re even more fun in the winter! In below-freezing temperatures, experiment with the magic of ice bubbles. Have fun blowing bubbles with your kids and watch the bubbles freeze into crystal balls! Blow traditional bubbles with a stick, or set a plate filled with bubble solution on the snow and blow into it with a straw, creating an overflowing stream of bubbles. Then watch them crystallize, one by one.

Sn Ma ow ze The deeper the snow, the more fun this is! Using a shovel, create a maze in deep snow. Kids love simply running through the maze, or you can implement any games like catch or Pac-Man for some added excitement!

Ob Co sta ur cle Work together with the se kids to create an obstacle course out of the snow. You can build cones, snow ramps, hopscotch and a variety of other snow structures that players will have to jump over, run around, sled across or plow through. Have the kids play, one by one, and time each participant’s duration. The player with the fastest run wins the race. Alternatively, create two obstacle courses and play with teams. Setting up this game can be as much fun as actually playing it!

Snow days make for opportune mommy-and-me play dates. Dig out that lonely pair of snow-gloves, and create some lasting memories with your little (or not-solittle) ones. You may just love it so much, you’ll be up at the crack of dawn on the next snow day, your snow boots also stomping out into the early-morn stillness, and join in the laughter echoing off the banks of white. The coffee will wait.

No sled? No problem! Here are some common household items that can come in handy until the roads are clear enough for you to head out for the long overdue snow-essentials stockup. Or you may just end up loving these makeshift sleds over the store-bought versions, and stock up at the grocery next time instead. • Cookie sheet • Plastic storage container lid • Baby tub • Tarp – if snow is hard • Trash-can lids • Laundry basket, covered with a thick garbage bag if desired. This makes a wonderful option for the snow-shy kids who can now stay snow-free! • Last but not least, the DIY cardboard sled. This is fairly durable for an afternoon of sledding and is some-

thing you probably won’t be upset ruining, especially when you’re hitting your highest speed sledding down a particularly steep hill. What you need: any cardboard box (grocery boxes are great), trash bags and duct tape. Flatten box (or two, for more sturdiness), using double-layer cardboard, and tape them together. Cut U-shaped at the front to add speed. Insert the cardboard into the trash bag, fold over and tape well. Optional: Cut a small hole at the front and tie on a piece of rope.

PART 7

AGENT MOMMY A BURST OF SUNSHINE with a touch of motherly intuition, Charnie’s personality made her a wonderful person to meet. She had been an elementary school teacher for over 20 years and had spent the last five years dealing with various mid-life family events, which included marrying off three children and caring for her elderly mother after she had experienced a stroke. Her mother had since moved in with her, and they had brought in an aide to assist with daily tasks. With most of her brood grown or in yeshivah and seminary most of the time, Charnie found herself with time on her hands. Not wanting to experience traumatic empty-nest syndrome, she took the initiative and decided that it was the perfect time to launch a new career. After her extended break from the workforce, Charnie had decided that it was time for something new. What that something new should be, though, she had no idea. I received her call one evening as I

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 20, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

was settling into my cozy chair getting ready to do some work. As I sipped my tea, I felt like I was talking to an old friend as Charnie described her past experiences and future goals. She was so obviously passionate about her family and students and had given so much of herself over the years that I was gratified that she had not neglected to focus on developing her own skills and was now ready to tackle a new challenge of choosing a career. Charnie explained that this would be the first time she was choosing a career. Her previous job had fallen into her lap as soon as she graduated high school, when the principal of her school had asked her to take on a job as a substitute, a position that had lasted over two decades long. She had raised her family during those years, always keeping teaching as a part-time job that didn’t take her focus away from her own children. The break she had taken the last few years to dedicate herself to her family had been a deci-

sion Charnie didn’t regret, as family had easily been her priority all along. We started with some evaluations to figure out where Charnie’s strengths lay. We kept in mind that she required a job with flexible hours so she would have the ability to take a break when one of her daughters had a baby, or if there was r”l a medical emergency with her mother. She was lucky that she had the time to learn a new skill, since her husband had been supporting the family on his own over the past few years, and was, baruch Hashem, successful in his business. He encouraged her to find a job that she would enjoy, if just to socialize and get out of the house, as caring for her mother was taking a toll on her naturally sunny disposition. Results in hand, we reviewed Charnie’s most noticeable traits. The personality match we came up with fit her so perfectly that she couldn’t believe it had been written by someone who had never met her. We discovered she had excellent problem-solving skills and that she preferred to work independently, which made sense. She described that in her teaching job, her focus had been in her classroom, never getting too involved in schoolwide events, as she got pleasure from connecting with her students in her unique way and in an intimate class-

room setting, where she was in charge. From the other aspects of her previous work, we were able to learn that she very much disliked advance preparation and didn’t enjoy being tied down to such a specific schedule. Since it was clear that she was an extrovert with strong spatial and design scores, we settled on a few options that she was interested in, the three most viable choices being jewelry design, real estate and interior decorating. We spent some time analyzing the differences that each job would present, including training, how much of a market-need existed and which would give her the most personal satisfaction. The final choice was real estate, and although there were many agents where she lived, she had confidence that her skills were an excellent match for this career. Additionally, her pool of contacts was quite large, which would be a bonus. The training needed was simple as well, as the field doesn’t require intense schooling. After finding a course and passing her exam, Charnie joined a local team where she had an acquaintance who agreed to help train her in. As of now, Charnie has not sold any homes yet, but she has the resilience, know-how and ability to connect with clients, understand their needs and match the right people with the right house at the right time. I’m looking forward to following her journey and seeing her name around town! Shaina Keren is a Monsey-based career coach who helps people find jobs they’re good at. The shortest-serving president has a thing or two to teach regarding the importance of being properly clothed for cold weather. A mere month after taking the oath of office, William Henry Harrison succumbed to pneumonia caused by the cold he had contracted while delivering a numbingly long inaugural address in wet, freezing weather without a hat, overcoat or gloves. THE FOUR LAYERS FOR FIGHTING FRIGIDITY FOUNDATION The layer closest to the skin should be long and fit snugly. It should also be non-absorbent, as materials like cotton will keep perspiration near your skin where it can cool. Moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics like polypropylene are the best choice, and if you want to go with a natural fiber, wool and silk also work. MID LAYER Your clothing, too, should be planned right. Synthetics like fleece and warm sweatshirts are best, and wool is a great option if natural materials

are preferred. Clothing should fit well and snugly to prevent body heat from escaping.

INSULATION The thicker a jacket is, the warmer it is. For extreme cold, a fair amount of loft is recommended: down, polarguard, holofill, thinsulate or primaloft. Down is the best option, but synthetic insulation is preferred for potentially wet conditions, as down loses its loft when moist and takes a long time to dry. SHELL The outer layer (often the coat will include this) should be wind- and water-resistant.

MITTENS OR GLOVES? Since fingers generate more heat when not separated from each other, mittens tend to be warmer than gloves and will keep your digits a lot cozier. However, you can become quite the klutz trying to zip zippers, handle gear or buckle your boots with all your fingers bunched together. The glove market features a variety of interesting features to make glove-wearing all that more practical: • Leather palms for a firm grip • Zippered pockets to hold heat packs • Wrist cinches to make sure no cold air makes its way in • Long cuffs for snug protection • Touch screen compatibility

Known as the “Warmest Coat on Earth,” this Snow Mantra Jacket from the company Canada Goose keeps its wearer warm well into the negative degrees. No matter how much you like the heat, it is not recommended for temperatures above 10 degrees Fahrenheit, and is purchased mainly by arctic researchers and those on extreme-cold weather expeditions for the small fortune of $1,495. TAKE THE HEAT WITH YOU Long gone are the days when students need to wait for the bus on frigid early mornings, dreaming of being enveloped in some of the warmth from home. Today’s market has many options for portable heating. HEAT PACKS are available from many different brands. They are activated by having their contents mixed or rubbed for a few seconds, after which the pouches can be placed in gloves, jacket pockets, boots or just about anywhere. The heat will keep going for 8 to 14 hours, depending on the manufacturer. HEATED INSOLES are all the rage and come with built-in battery packs. Some can be kept in socks, and others are remote-controlled with wireless capabilities. There are many out there to keep your feet warm from 3 hours to as long as 18 hours!

The Inuit saying, “When your feet are cold, cover your head,” teaches us one of the most important rules of keeping warm. Wear a hat that’s snug and provides protection for your head and ears. While dangling embellishments like pom-poms are pretty, they get annoying in the wind and also cause a large air gap at the top, which results in reduced insulation.

Why is the first day of winter in Maine known as Chester Greenwood Day? It’s in honor of the man who, as a young boy, invented the modern-day earmuff. He initially had to put up with the ridicule of his friends, but these ear protectors kept his ears from getting frostbitten when he’d skate. What was wrong with a hat that covers the ears? That wasn’t an option for Greenwood, being that he was allergic to the wool in the protective caps worn at that time. THE MONSEY VIEW / 113

I must get my friends, but before our suspect escapes.

Someone’s here, I’m sure of it! Brrr… I must skedaddle and run away from here.

Maybe it’s just an innocent cat that got stuck in the storage room?

No one is in the storage room!

I hope they won’t recognize me.

We’ll catch that thief.

You’re just imagining things, Mutty.

I’ll just crawl behind the boxes in the direction of the exit.

I can sneak out through here.

Let’s try to block the exit with boxes so he can’t escape.

There he is! Avraham, run and call the security guard.

Recap: Mutty goes to the factory’s storage room and is startled to hear someone moving around in there.
