Dear Editor, There are a lot of Siennas, specifically models between the years 2004 and 2011, that have an issue with the spare tire falling off the bottom of the car without you realizing it (which is a danger in itself if it happens while you’re driving), which means that if you have a flat on the road, you won’t have it when you need it. You can call Toyota at 800-331-4331 to find out if your car has this issue (or other ones including a failing safety lock, which prevents going out of park without pressing the break). If they see your car has either of these issues, they will fix it for free M.S.

RE: PROTECTING THE ULTIMATE PROTECTION OF YOUR HOME (ISSUE #134) Thank you for the most informative article about the importance of taking appropriate care of one’s mezuzos. Being that we live in a community that strives to fulfill mitzvos b’hudar, there is a need for transparency in this area. There is a certain level of certification that is necessary for one to be qualified to check a mezuzah. Just because someone is a certified sofer doesn’t necessarily mean he is a certified magiah (proofreader/checker). This is for a number of reasons, one being that the level of expertise needed to check every one of the 713 letters and more than 300 tagin (crowns) is greater than the knowledge that is needed to write them. This is because a proofreader is required to identify problems in a sofer’s handwriting that even the sofer himself may not be aware of. In addition, even if someone was once certified to proofread doesn’t mean that his certification is still valid. Certifications need to be renewed from time to time. This is to ensure that the proofreader constantly reviews the halachos and stays on top of his game. If the one who is checking your mezuzah is not currently certified to check it, it would be advisable to find someone who does have an active certification.

RE: THE CHIMES OF RECESS TIME (ISSUE #132) This is probably embarrassing, but I remember how we continued the rhyme in the “In Came the Teacher” jingle: “George Washington never said a lie, he ran around the corner and stole the cherry pie…” Does anyone remember that? Or was it just my neighborhood friends?

What happened to “Once I had a candy store”? That was so much fun. “Take a match and give a scratch and no more candy store!” Good times…

And what about “On a mountain stands a lady, who she is I do not know, all she wants is gold and silver, all she deserves is a punch in the nose”? Okay, this did not teach the best lesson, but it was recited religiously while jumping rope, I recall.

Thanks so much for bringing up these long-forgotten memories. They make me want to pull out a jump rope!

RE: IN SEARCH OF A CURE (ISSUE #131) In response to the one “desperate for relief,” people have used medication before without seeing great results. Personally, my own child who had tics took medication, and it got worse from one day to another.

I was going from one doctor to another doctor, and I wasn’t getting helped; they were just adding more and more pills. This was very sad for my child, and I was tired from going from one doctor to the next. Finally, I read about homeopathy, and after visiting a specialty homeopathic doctor, we found that this was an autoimmune disease, and my child is now completely healed from tics. BIG NEWS! My husband has officially joined the Nutrition by Tanya team! For months Tanya has been encouraging me to bring my husband on board. As you know from past articles, my husband has always been a careful, disciplined eater.

He has a tremendous amount of nutrition knowledge, and most importantly, is warm and encouraging — all the elements necessary to be a great nutrition counselor.

So finally, after dropping enough suggestions (nagging?), my husband agreed to train in as a nutrition counselor, but with one condition: He doesn’t want me as his boss. Smart man. We agreed to his condition, and he is now seeing clients in the Boro Park location once a week! My poor children better watch their backs because our house is about to become twice as healthy! In fact, I recently encouraged one of my twins to eat his chicken “because it’s healthy,” and his response was, “Mom, we’re not your clients!”

There have been a few other changes here at Nutrition by Tanya, so while I’m providing this newscast, allow me to update you. First, our cookies are under a new hechscher. Beginning this week you will find our cookies under the highly regarded Tarnipol hechsher to accommodate all of our clients.

You will also notice that the TAP cookies are slightly smaller. This is also to accommodate more of our clients. Previously, some clients were only allowed half a cookie on their original plan. As you know, eating half a cookie is a nearly impossible feat, so the smaller cookie will allow more clients to eat a full cookie. If you were allowed a full cookie on your original plan, check with your nutrition counselor, as you may now be alloted two TAP cookies as a complete breakfast. Along with the smaller size, you will notice that the cookies will also cost slightly less.

In other news, beginning February 1, our tenth location will open its doors.

This location will be on the Upper West Side and will accommodate both people living in New York City, as well as commuters. Tanya, Alice and I will all be working in that location — we keep saying we need to add at least another day or two to the week! The timing of this location’s

“GOOD SHABBOS, MR. WEINSTEIN! I brought a bottle of wine for Kiddush,” Dan Jacobs said.

“Come, join us inside,” replied Yaakov Weinstein. “We were just about to start singing.”

“Shalom Aleichem?” asked Dan. “I love that part!”

“Great, then you’re just in time.” Yaakov smiled. “Come, take your usual seat.”

“Thank you. Wow, the table looks amazing! Mrs. Weinstein, you outdid yourself again,” praised Dan. “Oh, it’s the guest who makes the table shine,” answered Mrs. Weinstein with a smile.

Yaakov called in the children and the seudah began.

The evening proceeded as it had the week before, and the month before, and the year before. Dan listened to Kiddush and answered amein. He followed the family into the kitchen and washed. He smiled as Mr. and Mrs. Weinstein laughed with their children. And at the end of the meal, Dan gladly accepted a translated bentcher, and he bentched along with the Weinsteins, albeit in English.

Dan loved the Weinstein family’s Shabbos table, and they loved hosting him. Things might have continued this way forever had Rabbi Beck not spoken up the next morning, following Shacharis.

“Yaakov, do you have a minute?”

“Sure, Rabbi, all the time in the world,” said Yaakov.

“How is it was working out with Dan Jacobs, the young man you host for Shabbos meals. Is he still coming to you?” asked Rabbi Beck.

“Oh, he certainly is. He really adds so much to our Shabbos table.”

“Well, I was hoping he would become a bit more… involved. Have you suggested that he attend my classes, or that he perhaps come a bit earlier and join you for davening?” inquired Rabbi Beck.

“I suggest it often, but Dan doesn’t seem interested. At least he’s somewhat interested in Shabbos — I mean, he eats by us every week,” offered Yaakov.

“Yes, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I was thinking that perhaps you might consider making some changes to the way you conduct your Shabbos seudos.”

Yaakov looked confused. “Why, did Dan complain about anything? He seemed perfectly content last night…”

“That’s precisely the problem, Yaakov. He’s perfectly

content. Too content. This week’s parsha discusses the eved ivri — the Jewish slave. The slave is required to work for six years, and then go free in the seventh year. However, he may choose to remain in servitude. If he does choose to remain, then the master must bring him to the doorpost and bore his ear with an awl. After that, the slave remains enslaved — by his own choosing!” explained Rabbi Beck.

“I always found that to be strange,” replied Yaakov.

“Who would anyone choose to remain a servant?”

“Well, a person shouldn’t want to remain in servitude.

That’s one of the reasons why he has his ear bored at the doorpost. The Gemara in Kiddushin 22b explains that the doorposts in Mitzrayim were witnesses when Hashem passed over and proclaimed that the Bnei Yisrael are His servants. If a man chooses to serve a human master, then his ear that had heard that we are to serve only Hashem is bored, as a kind of punishment.”

“Okay, but what is the connection to Dan?” asked Yaakov.

“Well, R’ Yisrael Salanter asked another question on this. Why does the master have to bore the hole in the slave’s ear? It appears that the master is being punished as well. R’ Yisrael Salanter explains that the master is held accountable because he conducted his home in such a way that the slave was content to remain a slave. The atmosphere of the home should inspire people to want to grow and become more than they are, rather than remaining in a secondary position.”

As the connection dawned on Yaakov, he responded, “I see. Dan has not been inspired to be more than a guest at our table. What can I do differently to inspire Dan to want to continue growing? And my own children, too — I don’t want them to settle for less than their full potential either.”

“Tell me, do you give a dvar Torah at the table?” asked Rabbi Beck.

Yaakov’s faced reddened. “Well, I really want to, but I don’t know what to say at the table…” he confessed.

“There’s no need to feel embarrassed — this is very common. Here are a few books with divrei Torah on the parsha that were written especially to be told over at the Shabbos table.”

“Thank you so much, Rabbi Beck,” said Yaakov, “in more ways than one.”

Let Me Help Extending a Little, Effecting a Lot Based upon a lecture by Mrs. Tzippy Reifer

It was Wednesday afternoon, a mere few days before Pesach, when my phone rang.

Just a week earlier I had married off a baalas teshuvah whom I had become close to, and I was now tirelessly preparing for Pesach.

Not wishing to involve myself in more than I could handle, I wondered if this phone call would do exactly that. Little did I know that it would.

I glanced down to see who was calling, but didn’t recognize the name and wondered if I should pick it up. After hesitating for a moment, I decided I would.

“Ma…” called out a girl on the other end of the line. I immediately realized it was my daughter.

“What happened?” I asked. “Where are you?”

“I’m calling from a payphone on the street. I just came down this block to kasher my pots and pans for Pesach, and I ran into a woman I’ve never met before. She is dressed like a regular frum lady, though she doesn’t look Jewish. She asked if she could bring her non-kosher pots and make them kosher at this same site where everyone is kashering their household wares for Pesach. I’m not sure what to tell her. Do you know?”

As my daughter relayed this information to me, I asked her to put the woman on the line. After introducing myself, I asked if I could be of any help.

“Well,” the woman said, “I just became Jewish last week, and I wanted to make all my utensils, which were previously used for non-kosher food, acceptable to be used in my new kosher kitchen. At the moment, I don’t have anything else to cook or eat with.”

Listening to this woman’s story, I was very touched, yet I wondered if it would be best if she would simply buy new dishes altogether and circumvent the kashering of her entire kitchen.

“Is money an issue?” I asked.

“Well...” She hesitated. “I just left my job recently, and so, yes, money is an issue.”

As soon as I heard that, I knew what I wanted to do. “I’ll tell you what. Why don’t you come to my house tomorrow, and we’ll see what we can do. Let me look at what you need and see how I can help.”

The next day she was at my house, ready to get down to business. As I began talking to her and learning more about her past and current experiences, I felt that it would be best for her to start her new phase of Jewish life with new sets of dishes. “Let’s go shopping,” I told her.

As I said this, my mind immediately began to race.

Which store to choose? The most expensive houseware store in Boro Park was just down the street from my house, while the less expensive stores were a distance away. At the moment, I was exhausted from cleaning and preparing my house for Pesach, and I wondered if I had the strength to make it to any of the cheaper stores miles away.

“Hashem,” I said, “You are the One Who comes with me to the Bergament Outlet store, Albert & Sons, and National Wholesale Liquidators; I guess You can come with me to the expensive store on 14th Avenue and make everything work out. You know exactly how much money I don’t have, how much time I don’t have and how much

Rate Hikes Looming for O&R Customers?

WHILE THE RECORD COLD winter has left many area residents with whopping gas and electric bills, utility costs may go even higher if a requested rate hike submitted by Orange & Rockland is approved.

The utility company, which serves 116,394 electric and 85,000 gas customers, is hoping for an increase of an average $6 per month for electric users and $4 per month for gas users, reported The Journal News. The expected $25 million in revenue would be used to pay for the replacement of 22 miles of aging pipes per year, as well as installing smart gas and electric meters and other upgrades. O&R has also announced plans to construct two new electrical substations in Rockland County.

The rate hike would be subject to public comment and hearings before being considered by the state’s Public Service Commission.

County Executive Ed Day blasted the proposed rate hike.

“I find it extremely troubling that at the same time

the federal corporate tax rate is dropping, they are increasing the costs to our consumers,” said Day. But O&R president and CEO Robert Sanchez defended the move saying that the “rate review request is designed to meet the demands of a dynamic energy marketplace where customers desire more control over their energy usage and expect a more reliable and resilient system.”

Worst Flu Season in Over a Decade Continues FOR THE THIRD WEEK in a row, a record number of cases of the flu were reported in New York State, with 11,600 lab-confirmed cases in the week ending January 27.

According to Democrat & Chronicle, those numbers represent a 50 percent increase of the previous week’s reports, which were also record-breaking.

All 62 of the state’s counties have been suffering from much higher than usual flu rates, with 2,221 people hospitalized with the flu in New York according to the latest numbers.

The Centers for Disease Control warned that those who have the flu can be contagious for up to a week after they begin experiencing flu symptoms, which can include coughing, fever, chills, sore throat, congestion, aches, headaches, vomiting or diarrhea. The flu is spread when droplets created when an infected individual coughs, sneezes or talks are inhaled by another person.

Because those droplets can spread up to six feet away, the CDC advises anyone who might have the flu to stay home from work or school to avoid infecting others. The Department of Health called for frequent handwashing with an alcohol-based hand wash to avoid spreading the

flu.

The intensity of this week’s flu took doctors by surprise, with Broome County once again reporting the largest number of cases in the state. Rockland County has had 369 confirmed cases of flu since October 1, with a whopping 601 cases reported over the same time period in Orange County.

More than just an annoyance or a prolonged illness, the flu can be deadly, and this year’s strain, influenza A (H3N2), is known to be particularly hard-hitting.

Flu outbreaks have been reported all across the United States, with Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting director of the CDC, warning that flu season is expected to continue for several more weeks.

While some deemed the flu shot to be controversial, Schuchat urged the public to get vaccinated, with Dr. Howard Zucker, New York State’s health commissioner, echoing her words.

“Influenza is a potentially deadly disease and getting vaccinated is the best thing New Yorkers can do to protect themselves and those around them, followed by good hand hygiene,” said Dr. Zucker.

Get your meal off to an easy start! Start the meal with this trio of updated fish dishes. which can all be prepped in the fridge a day ahead and then baked fresh just before serving. You can now enjoy the day because you know that great-tasting food will be greeting your hungry brood just minutes after they march in.

TROUT ROSES Yield: 9 medium roses This recipe is a real cheat. It presents beautifully and tastes wonderful. No one has to know how easy they are to make.

INGREDIENTS: 1½ pounds skinless turbot fillet or fish of your choice ½ tsp. salt 4 T. tomato paste 1 T. oil 2 T. honey 2 T. lemon juice ½ onion, grated Dash of black pepper

DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine all ingredients, except fish, in a gallon-size Ziploc bag.

2. Slice fish lengthwise into long narrow strips. (Varying the width/length of the strips will result in differently sized roses.)

3. Place the fish into the Ziploc bag and shake to coat all the strips.

4. Working with one strip at a time, roll up jelly-roll style and place into paper-lined muffin tins. Cover with plastic and refrigerate until ready to bake.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes on 400°.

Tip: Use disposable tins for easier removal after baking.

SALMON WONTONS Yield: 15 Wontons Wonton dough is what I use when I want to upgrade a simple dish to something a bit more special, without the extra calories of flaky dough. The garlic-mayo dip takes the awesome flavor of the fish to the next level.

INGREDIENTS: 1 package Gefen wonton squares

1½ pounds skinless salmon fillet

MARINADE: 1 clove garlic, minced

2 T. olive oil

1 tsp. soy sauce

2 T. brown sugar

¼ cup white wine

½ tsp. salt

Dash of black pepper

DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine marinade ingredients in a large Ziploc bag.

2. Cut salmon into 1½-inch cubes. Place them in the bag and refrigerate for at least one hour (or even overnight).

3. Spread 15 wonton squares over paper-lined cookie sheets. Brush liberally with marinade. Place one fish cube onto each square.

4. Dip 15 other wonton squares into the marinade and place each over a fish cube in the pan. Brush tops of squares with some more marinade and cover with plastic wrap until ready to bake.

5. Bake at 350° for about 15 minutes. Do not overbake; dough should remain soft.

GARLIC-MAYO DIP: ½ cup light mayonnaise 2 T. lemon juice 1–2 garlic cloves, minced ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. sugar ⅛ tsp. black pepper 1 tsp. dried parsley flakes

Blend all ingredients using an immersion blender.

BRAIDED FLAKY NILE PERCH I created this dish because an extra package of flaky dough needed to get out of my freezer (Pesach comes right after Purim, you know…). The result was a winning recipe that’s been gracing our yom tov table since.

INGREDIENTS: 4 T. mayonnaise 2 T. orange juice concentrate 1 T. mustard 1 T. ketchup ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. onion powder ⅛ tsp. garlic powder ⅛ tsp. black pepper 2 pounds skinless nile perch fillet (2 large pieces) or fish of your choice 1 15-ounce package flaky dough

DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine first eight ingredients.

2. Coat both sides of fish with a thick layer of this mixture. Place coated fish on a parchment-paper-lined baking sheet.

3. Cut flaky dough in half. Roll each half into a rectangle, large enough to cover the fish. Place one rectangle of dough over each piece of fish.

4. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes on 400°. Allow to sit for a few minutes before transferring to a serving platter or cutting into slices.

Note: For a festive presentation, after placing dough over fish, you can slit the dough along the sides into 1 inch strips (being careful to cut only through the dough and not the fish), and then braid the strips into a pretty pattern.

WHEN YOUR KIDS WERE LITTLE, YOU PRETTY much expected your house to be filled with baby paraphernalia, but as your cuties got bigger, your home probably matured along with your family. Those board books that used to be read over and over again may have been replaced by chapter books, and the avalanche of sippy cups in your cabinets have probably given way to a jungle of coffee mugs as your teenagers started discovering the wonders of a morning cup of java. time the grandkids roll around, they probably aren’t in the greatest of shape anymore.

So once again, you will likely find yourself shopping for baby gear, only as a grandparent, your needs are probably different. While it is obvious that quality is still a very important factor in the equation, at this slightly different stage of life you may put more of an emphasis on things that can be easily stored away and, to put it bluntly, don’t cost an arm and a leg. I found myself facing sticker shock when I started looking to replace my trusty Fisher-Price high chair — possibly the best high chair ever made.

When I bought it in 1988, it was pretty much top-of-the-line and I found it on sale for $60, but today’s gorgeous new models hover in the $300 range. Soon I found myself embarking on a quest to find high-quality, reasonably priced baby essentials for my little cuties.

When my two married daughters came back from Eretz Yisroel and moved in with us just a day apart, my first purchase was two new playards — a Graco Pack ‘N Play and an off-brand model that I found on clearance. From day one, my Pack ‘N Play served me well while the other playard gave me nothing but grief every time I tried to open or close it. There is a reason why just about everyone refers to playards as Pack ‘N Plays — because Graco makes a superior product, with the lowest-end models often on sale for around $40. Personally, I prefer to spend a few dollars more and get one that offers the convenience of positioning newborns a little higher. If you want to go all out, Graco even makes models with detachable bouncers, diaper changing stations and, for those blessed with double nachas, two bassinets sitting side by side for twins.

Because it gets used frequently, I think a highchair is probably the most important grandparent item, and you want one that is easy to clean and operate. While I did stash my old Fisher-Price one in the basement in case of emergency, I actually own two OXO Seedlings, a reasonably priced high

chair that is loaded with features.

In addition to having a removable, machine-washable pad, and both height and recline adjustments to make it age-appropriate for a wide range of ages, the Seedling’s tray can be removed with one hand, leaving you with a second hand to wipe down your leben-coated baby.

Priced at a very reasonable $129.99, this is a great high chair for the price, with extra trays available from OXO for Pesach for just $29.99 with free shipping.

So far I have hesitated to invest in car seats for my grandchildren, because unlike most other baby items, car seats have to be accurately sized and have pretty daunting rules regarding their usable life span. I couldn’t resist the mifold booster seat, though, designed for kids ages four and up who fit the weight and height requirements of 40 to 100 pounds and 40 to 57 inches. Ten times smaller than the average booster and weighing in at 1.6 pounds, mifold is about the size of a package of baby wipes and gives you the ability to sit three children across in the backseat of your car, a rarity among car seats. Because of its diminutive size, mifold is great for taxis, carpool, trips and, yes, grandparents, who can easily stash this seat in their glove compartment when it isn’t in use.

Looking for a stroller as a bubby had me thinking differently than when I was buying one as a mommy.

I wanted something lightweight and easy to fold and handle, but most importantly, wouldn’t take up a lot of space in my house or car.

The OXO Air struck exactly the right balance for me. I was able to open and close it without even having to open up the instruction booklet, and it’s delightfully small when folded. Weighing in at just 11 pounds, it is easy to take in and out of a car, bus or taxi, and it also has a gigantic hood with a convenient zippered pocket to hold your phone and keys. It also sports a decent-sized basket to hold baby stuff, packages or both. While I do wish there was some way to recline the Air’s seat, its fabulous handling and really small footprint really make this one a winner in my book.

Of course, we all know what the best grandparents keep their homes stocked with. Plenty of love. Mountains of love. Maybe just a few too many treats.

Oh, and paper towels. Lots of paper towels. Because when the kids come, you definitely need plenty of those!

“The visit won’t take long. I’m worried about her. I haven’t been able to reach her in a while.”

“Okay, I’ll tell my daughter to take care of other things first.

I’ll pick you up soon.”

Mindy put down the phone, pensive. She had a full day planned with her daughter, who had come in to visit her. Poor Mrs. Stern had no one to visit her.

Mindy and Devorah, two middle-aged women whose children were mostly grown, spent a good portion of their days doing chesed, visiting patients in hospitals and nursing homes, as well as shut-ins, for whom a long and cold winter meant almost no contact with the outside world.

Among their other regulars, they had informally adopted Mrs. Stern, a darling widow whose husband passed on many years earlier. Mrs. Stern’s two children lived out of state and visited her only sporadically. Since she was in good health, she wasn’t eligible for an aide or formal assistance from the government. Her children had arranged for her to receive meals from Bikur Cholim twice a week, and some of the neighbors stopped in to see her from time to time. Yet everyone was busy with their own family; it was hard to keep an old, frail neighbor in mind all the time. As the months went by, Mrs. Stern

rarely had any visitors to relieve the monotony of her days.

Mindy picked up Devorah and they drove to Mrs. Stern’s house, which was located toward the end of a busy street inhabited mainly by young families. The small high ranch was dark and neglected, the garbage can was overflowing and it was obvious that no one had taken care of it in a while.

They got out of the car and walked to the front door, knocking softly, and then louder. A few minutes went by, and there was no response. They called Mrs. Stern’s home number, and heard the phone ring, multiple times, inside the darkened home.

“Perhaps she’s not home,” said Mindy. “We should have called before coming.”

“Where could she be? Mrs. Stern never goes anywhere,” Devorah murmured. “Maybe she was taken to the hospital.”

“Should we go back home and

They jiggled the doorknob and found it unlocked. Now frantic, the women opened the door and began shouting for Mrs. Stern.

room. The women raced up the stairs and into the frigid home and followed the sound. Mrs. Stern was lying in bed, in the back of the house, semi-conscious and delirious. It was obvious that she had not eaten or drank anything in days.

The women called Hatzoloh and quickly dribbled some water into the old woman’s mouth, rubbing her icy fingers and waiting for emergency assistance. Hatzoloh soon rushed the severely dehydrated woman into the hospital.

When Mrs. Stern regained consciousness, she explained that she wasn’t feeling well, had been too weak to get out of bed and had no phone nearby to call for help. Thus, she remained trapped in her room for days, unable to eat or drink.

If the two women hadn’t come to check on her, the outcome probably would have been very tragic.

THIS TRUE STORY, which happened last year in our community on a busy street filled with people, is a stark, yet telling example of the obligation we have to the elderly in our midst. There are so many senior citizens living alone, waiting for someone to stop by to take an interest in their welfare and make sure they are okay. How can we let them languish, day after day, not knowing if they have food, steam or access to medical care?

Sometimes the elderly patient is our own grandparent, sitting home, day after day, waiting for a bit of sunshine to brighten their drab day. And that’s when the rules change.

When it’s our own grandparents, a single visit once in a while, a hot meal or occasional phone call is only scratching the surface of our obligation. Because it goes much deeper.

After all, our treasured grand-

parents are not merely a chesed obligation that warrants our attention along with the rest of our to-do list.

In Yiddishkeit, our grandparents are considered the link to our mesorah, the crown of our families.

Zaidy and Bubby sacrificed so much to raise our parents, to plant generations, to be there for us when we were young. And now, during their golden years, how can we possibly allow them to languish alone, day after day, waiting for a grandchild to stop by or call?

The mere fact that our grandparents are with us, that we can connect with them, is the greatest miracle. A generation or two ago, in the shadow of the Holocaust, having grandparents was a rarity. Fortunate, indeed, was the family who had a Bubby and a Zaidy!

Nowadays, baruch Hashem, most families are blessed with grandparents, and even great-grandparents.

What a bracha! What a zechus, to sit at the table with our parents’ parents, to hear stories of family lore, to share highlights of our lives and bring them to our simchos!

Sometimes, though, familiarity breeds apathy. Life is so busy and hectic; it’s so easy to push off our visits to Zaidy and Bubby for “another day.” One day leads to the next, and soon the months pass without our steady presence. And then, without warning, the treasures we have been taking for granted are no longer available. All we have are our memories and the crushing guilt of “could haves” and “should haves.”

Let’s not wait until it’s too late, chalilah. Let’s appreciate our grandparents while they are still with us, while we can spend time with them and show them how much we cherish them.

There are so many ways that we can make our grandparents part of our lives, and impart their beautiful mesorah to our children. Here are some examples:

VISITING DAY Make one day a week “grandparents’ day,” and stop by to visit them, come what may. (Obviously, depending on their health and schedules.) The visit should be regular, carefully planned (make sure children are well fed and rested beforehand) and should have a basic schedule. For example, the boys can show Zaidy what they learned that day, while the girls can share school projects with Bubby, show her family pictures, or perhaps do some crafts.

PUTTER IN THE KITCHEN If Bubby is in relatively good health and able to cook or bake, invite her to a “girls’ day” in the kitchen, along with her daughters and granddaughters. You can bond over babka dough or the thinnest apple strudel that only Bubby knows how to prepare!

BUBBY MAKEOVER When was the last time you went shopping with Bubby to spruce up her wardrobe? Whether a new tichel, spacious pocketbook to store treats for the einiklach, or comfortable SAS shoes, Bubby deserves to feel cherished and special.

DAVEN WITH ZAIDY Have the young men and boys in the family accompany Zaidy to his shul on Shabbos, and sit near him, allowing him a few hours of pure, undiluted nachas. KNIT WITH BUBBY I have fond memories of sitting on Bubby’s couch on frigid winter nights, as she patiently taught me how to knit and crochet, undoing my mistakes. I still have the black cashmere sweater I knit, under Bubby’s guidance, stowed away in my attic. I can’t bring myself to throw it away as it contains such precious memories.

The above are just suggestions; not all of them are doable or practical. But if we keep Zaidy and Bubby in our hearts and minds, and constantly think of ways to make their golden years more special by brightening their lonely days, our children and ourselves will ultimately be the ones who gain.

WHEN MY MOTHER, a”h, was alive, she was our link to the past and she kept mesorah alive. When she passed away, my siblings and I inherited the obligation and privilege of guiding the younger generations in what’s proper and what behavior should not be condoned, even though they don’t always understand.

Once upon a time, not too long ago, when a parent said something, it was accepted without question. I once was researching minhagim and asked a very chashuve rebbetzin why she did something a certain way on her wedding day. Her simple answer floored me: “Veil di mamme hut azoi geheisen.” (“Because my mother told me to.”) No questions, no secondguessing and, of course, no arguments.

Today’s conveniences water down a lot of the mesorah we grew up with. Bedikas chometz used to be greeted with anticipation. While the man of the house went to daven Mincha and Maariv, the woman took out the piece of bread she had saved, and ever so carefully, cut it into ten pieces and put them around the house. Those pre-packed, triple-

sealed pieces of bread don’t evoke the same ta’am. Neither do the readyfilled Chanukah oil cups compare to watching Tatty roll his own wicks. According to our mesorah, on Erev Yom Kippur the kaparah is kashered and served at the seudah.

Things that may seem mundane are an integral part of our mesorah.

Shabbos, with its various minhagim,

despite the plethora of new cookbooks suggesting the contrary, should really be etched in stone: fish at both seudos; chicken soup with noodles and either kneidlach, lima beans or both; chicken with the usual sides of sweet carrots and farfel — to which some add kugel and others liver. I tell my children that even if they do allow the newfangled dips, they still should impress upon their children that those are extras and don’t originally belong on a Shabbos table.

Cholent is strictly a Shabbos food, and as such, no one in previous generations would serve it any other day.

When there’s a wedding on the horizon, I try to impress upon my progeny the awe and the opportunity that the yom hachuppah represents.

The stores are full of seforim, tefillos, techinos and scholarly essays, all geared for the chosson/kallah for their yom hachuppah. I would simply hand my grandchild the same thing that I used the day I got married: a Sefer Tehillim. Makeup, hairdressing and photography do play a part on that important day, but some time should also be allotted for ruchniyus.

My children also hear me say that a chosson and kallah during sheva brachos are considered to be like a king and queen. Did you ever see a member of the royal family in an appliance store buying a stereo, or in the bank opening an account? I still cringe when I remember meeting a friend’s young couple — he bedecked in his shtreimel, she in her sheva brachos finery — on the bus from Monsey. I don’t throw money around, but sending them to the city in a car service, to me, is as important a chasunah expense as the flower headbands all the granddaughters wore the previous night.

Sometimes, we wonder if all our talk is for nothing.

I claim that if we won’t talk, how will they know that “es past nisht” to walk in the street holding a coffee cup or guzzling water straight from the bottle? Can we then blame them for doing what has become acceptable in today’s society? Years ago, even respectable gentiles did not walk out without a hat or overcoat.

Whether one is a chassidishe yungerman or a litvishe ben Torah, “es past nist” to walk in the street hat-less.

Most of the examples of “es past nisht” are not actual violations of halacha. If they were, there would be nothing to discuss. An excellent explanation of these differences is a famous lesson taught by the Divrei Yechezkel of Shineve, zt”l. He describes two groups of Jews, both shomrei mitzvos.

One group gathers on Shabbos afternoon to sing zemiros and praise Hashem. The others go strolling in the park with their wives. There’s nothing inherently wrong halachically, and some may even say that this stroll is their oneg Shabbos. But realistically, there is definitely a wide difference in the avodas Hashem of the two groups, the

Don’t think that my entire relationship with my grandchildren is mussar and scolding. I have a wonderful relationship with them and I kvell when they share their accomplishments with me. I always try to maintain my sense of humor and my equilibrium, which is why the following story is one my grandchildren will call “typical bubby.”

Anyone who came into my sukkah this past yom tov was told, “No, it is definitely not a family minhag to hang a dreidel in the sukkah.” So how did it get there? On Erev Sukkos, my son Eluzer came to finish hanging the decorations, bringing along

While puttering among my toys, he found a red dreidel, carried it into the sukkah and handed it to his father with a piece of string, with a request to hang it up. It was easier to hang it than to start an argument, and Eluzer intended to remove the dreidel when he finished his work. However, the zman was approaching when he was done, and in his rush to put away all the tools and ladders, he forgot about the dreidel.

By the time he realized that the dreidel was still hanging, it was way past shkiah.

My sons started a halachic debate as to whether this dreidel was a true noi sukkah and thus muktzah.

Here’s where my role as grandmother kicked in.

I told them emphatically that even if they would pasken that it may be removed, I didn’t want to dampen the simcha and pride that Pinchas had showing off his contribution to our sukkah. As a prejudiced grandmother, I must admit that it added a special chein to our yom tov. I even preserved it for perpetuity by taking a picture on motzei yom tov. Pinchas was left with the good feeling that “even Bubby was on my side.” I know when to pick my battles.

May Hashem grant all bubbies arichas yamim and menuchas hanefesh. Together with the zaidies, of course, they should continue to be our important link to the past and be zoche to head our families as we greet Moshiach tzidkeinu bimheirah b’yameinu.

A bubby needs no singular expertise to be a grandmother — you merely have to “be.” Likewise, grandchildren are valued simply because they “are.” Bubbyhood bestows upon you the attributes of wisdom and respect simply by your joining the “older” generation. Whereas parenthood requires a hands-on, full-time set of parenting skills, bubbyhood allows for leeway in sitting back and embracing the view.

Bubbies may lack the unique “book learning” of today’s generation, but are uniquely capable of making boo-boos magically disappear and seemingly overwhelming problems evaporate. They are a wonderful source of trivial information replete with secret remedies to heal the heart and the mood. Darning, ironing, haggling over prices and hanging clothes on the line are several of the antiquated skills we old-timers possess, though truth be told, some youngsters have inherited these traits. However, there is emotional security, a belief and value system that only a bubby can impart to her grandchild.

As a child matures, he may realize that his parents are not infallible. Parents are so closely aligned with their child that a tense atmosphere may be the kindling for tempers to flare and quarrels to erupt. A parent may feel the stress of attending to the minute details of home-life and simply lack the time to provide his or her child with the undivided attention she craves. Bubby’s home, a safe haven, may be the one in which the grandchild can let her “guard down,” so to speak. She can confide her troubles in an unthreatening environment, with confidentiality, while enjoying exclusive attention. Bubby tends to forego undertaking mammoth tasks when she learns of an up-

coming visit, which allows her to be at the child’s disposal. This may mean fashioning a snowman out of clay, testing a child on spelling or sharing happenings of the day (I’m bubbysitting a five-year-old strep-afflicted sweetie as I write).

Bubbies attend celebrations, performances, graduations and plays.

Bubbies are the party coordinators, gathering clans so that siblings, cousins and an assortment of family and friends can experience a unique sense of connectedness.

Without a doubt, a bubby will “spoil” the einiklach. The contents of a prize box, freezer, candy jar and arts-and-crafts closet offer marvelous, creative possibilities.

A parsha sheet read by Bubby with its proud owner on her lap is a memory never forgotten — even without an accompanying mitzvah tzettel (though that is a huge bonus!). A sincere compliment will have far-reaching effects, be it for shiny new shoes or a deliciously prepared and shared dish. A happy birthday phone call verifying that the dear einikel’s special day is remembered by Bubby is a cause for great celebration.

My own mother was niftar at a young age and was never zoche to experience the bliss of acknowledging einiklach, and so I greet my own with a deep sense of appreciation to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for the zechuyah. Bubby (and Zaidy) are the link to a previous era, and a savvy grandchild (and/or their parents) will appreciate that a grandparent is a treasure trove of detailed information about their family’s history. I have precious memories of my maternal grandparents: my Savta’s sugar cookies, rugelach, rice cooked with milk for my Saba, and my Saba’s constant learning and Tehillim repetition, despite prior illness having caused him to lose his sight. Those recollections have been shared with my children.

A beloved childless aunt, a”h, instilled in me the delight of letter-

writing. I have taken that love to the next level; several of my einiklach have become my “pen pals,” and I have encouraged them to preserve these letters just as I have done with those of my aunt. Designer stationery, a mugful of colorful markers and a vast sticker assortment — or even a blank white sheet and a pencil — produce artistic, creative and cherished communications.

What’s the trick to the actuality of your being a “flawless bubby?” Make the child feel special in your presence; indulge them with warmth, pride and love. The little (and not so little) ones adore playing games with a grandparent, and which bubby doesn’t enjoy a game of Uno, Rummy or Chinese Checkers (five times in a row)? If getting out of that comfy recliner on Friday night proves too difficult, and a well-deserved snooze is beckoning, try a spirited game of “I spy with my little eye...” It can be played without moving an iota from under the blanket and with eyelids at half-mast. If even that appears to take a hefty amount of effort, tuck an einikel beneath your arm for some pleasant cozy time.

The observation penned by an unknown author perfectly sums up the honor of bubbyhood: “A bubby (author’s translation) is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend.”

Observing one’s grandchild makes Bubby conveniently forget any transgressions her children did and allows her to be enchanted by the brilliance of her grandchildren. May Hashem Yisborach bentch all of Klal Yisroel with Yiddish nachas!

It’s a while since I joined the ranks of bubbyhood and I’m still working on figuring out my role. Everyone approaches this role with her own unique personality and skill set. Some are more relaxed, others are more mindful and eager to do it “right” — whatever that looks like! And many are long-distance grandmothers — and that becomes an entirely different situation.

I have a confession to make. I’m not a bubby. I’m a savta. Yaffa Ganz’s fabulous character, Savta Simcha, was my initial role model. Savta Simcha is resourceful, energetic, spunky, kind, caring and lovable. What’s intriguing is that in Yaffa Ganz’s books, Savta Simcha is unmarried! She lives with her brother, Uncle Nechemiah, serving as a surrogate Savta to the neighborhood children! Here’s lesson number one: Everyone benefits from having a grandmother. Perhaps we can “adopt” a neighborhood family that’s missing an in-town bubby!

Several years ago I had an epiphany. My son Yuda was learning Pesach halachos with his son Yisroel. After learning that the men must lean to the side during the Seder, Yisroel asked, “What about women?” Yuda informed him, as the Shulchan Aruch writes, that “chashuve” women should also lean to the side. Yisroel commented, “Oh, so Savta should lean at the Seder.”

When Yuda shared this interchange with me, it was quite an eye-opener. As a Savta, I must be chashuv. Lesson number two: It’s not enough to be loving, caring and energetic. My primary role is to pass down our mesorah. These impressionable young children are observing me. How do I conduct myself? Am I keeping my equanimity 24/7? Is my simchas hachaim obvious?

Do I exhibit enthusiasm for Torah and mitzvos? Do I show the proper respect for our rabbanim and gedolim? How do I say my brachos? Is my wardrobe appropriate for a “chashuve” woman?

Thank you, Yisroel, for the wake up call!

I just returned from a week out of town, visiting my daughter and family, squeezing my “grandmothering” into a short period of time. Many of us were blessed with parents close by as we raised our own children. This is a different world. There are moments when it’s challenging having our children living at a distance. So what do we do? Today, it’s easier to keep in touch.

Children and grandchildren phone regularly. And here I must interject: This is a two-way relationship. In order to build a close relationship with our grandchildren, their parents — our adult children — must help. They must encourage this relationship. They should initiate the phone calls when the children are young, and they may have to encourage older ones to call regularly. They should have photos displayed of grandparents and extended family members. Especially when dealing with the younger set, it’s difficult to build a new relationship every time we meet!

We, as grandparents, represent unconditional love. No criticism. Minimum demands. One day these children may need a listening ear. They may need a mentor, a coach. Our role may prove to be pivotal. Davening for loved ones is also part of my role. I have their names written out and I whip out my list and recite the names, picturing each child and grandchild as I do so. Even if I’m not hands-on 24/7, I’m still connected.

When I am together with the children, I like to engage with them hands-on. These activities enable me to bond with them. I bring books that I enjoy reading, are age-appropriate and enjoyable. I love word games; my favorite is Upwords. We also play Anagrams and Scrabble. I bring art projects. The children particularly enjoy Melissa and Doug’s Paint With Water collection that has the paint embedded within the pages, and I also enjoy this activity. That’s the key: If I’m having fun, so are they! We go for nature walks. We write letters and draw pictures that I mail to their cousins. We color together. And these masterpieces adorn my kitchen!

As they get older, the scenario changes. I bring along cartoons, jokes and articles that will interest them. I bring perfume samples with me for a sensory experience, and I invite them to do stitches in my needlework project. We look at albums together. I bring song sheets and we sing together! I’ve taken them to visit local museums. On a recent visit we all worked in the kitchen making sushi, my husband directing.

Having said all that, I must confess that I’m not “on” 24/7.

As I’ve hit the 60s, my tolerance level for noise and commotion is almost down to zero. I generally prefer being with one family at a time so I can have quiet time with each child and make sure I connect with each one. Although I do love when the cousins connect, there’s a time and place for everything.

Years ago I would host large Shabbos and yom tov tables with great joy and energy. Today, I’ve happily relinquished that role to our adult children, who are baruch Hashem, exceedingly capable.

It’s not always easy to move on. However, Rav Avigdor Miller, zt”l, taught that our lives can be compared to a literary work, consisting of many chapters. Each chapter has the potential for happiness, though the transitions between chapters may be challenging. We’re in transition mode now and need to hold on because there is much joy up ahead!

There is much to be said regarding these transitional years.

Take a look at these books, The Best Is Yet to Be and To Fill the Sky with Stars, written especially for women our age. These books provide the encouragement, validation, inspiration and the practical advice needed as we journey on. Within these books lies the support network we’ve been seeking!

THE WORD “GRANDMOTHER” conjures up a lot of images, all revolving around an image that’s warm, accepting, giving and... always available.

Ideally, a grandmother’s arms and home are always open to her beloved family members. Her refrigerator is always stocked with just the right things to make her children and grandchildren feel nurtured and nourished. And she never, ever tires of catering to and caring for her loved ones.

They are her priority in every way, and their happiness means the world to her. They are her world, and the way she puts herself out for them proves just how deeply she feels for them.

Truth be told, the above description may be an ideal, but many grandmothers fall pretty short.

And that’s not because they don’t cherish and prioritize their family; it’s just because they can’t do and be it all. Just as the words “family” and “parent” mean so many different things to different people, the title “grandmother” isn’t one-size-fits-

There are working and non-working grandmothers, older and younger ones, grandmothers gifted with culinary abilities and others who prefer the pizza shop. There are grandmothers whose love comes in the form of gifts and some who are great at spending time with those they love. Others may be expert conversationalists, even if they’re long-distance, some love to snuggle and others love a Scrabble board between them and their little charges. The bottom line is, what’s ideal in theory may not be feasible, practical or preferred in real time. So even if the image is what a grandmother knows on some level she should be, it doesn’t mean it will be who she is.

Sometimes, it’s not as important knowing what we should be as it is to know what we should not be.

As different as grandmothers are, perhaps they can share common themes of what they are not: They are not responsible for the discipline of their grandchildren. They are not to judge the style of the parents’ parenting (or pretty much anything else!). On the other hand, they are not expected to be available without advance notice, and they aren’t meant to ignore their own financial and/or

physical limitations, even though they’d love to be able to give and do it all.

In terms of what they should be, it depends on the individual and even then, different times and settings may find the same grandmother playing her role quite differently.

For instance, while the working grandmother’s structure may not leave all that much time for hosting, vacations can be where she makes up for that. On the contrary, a more “available” grandmother may need her vacations as an opportunity to have time for herself, without being accessible. A grandmother may be masterful when it comes to orchestrating a yom tov in general, but may find it extremely stressful another year if she’s handling her aged parents at the same time. She may truly love being a giver very often, but may need to rely on taking kids’ help and invitations on occasion. So the role of what should and could be is fluid. And the grandmother is just as much that — a grandmother — regardless of what the “should be” of that time is.

Most women have a hard time saying no, and it especially doesn’t seem in sync with that ideal image of grandmother. But grandmothers, like any women, aren’t required to always say yes. Whether it’s about extending a favor, helping with emotional or financial support, hosting… it’s tough to make yes the only option. Many opt for saying the yes without question, regardless of whether or not they mean it, and that’s not really doing anyone any good. It usually ends up creating resentment and a job done poorly. As a dear mentor of mine once questioned me, “If your saying no means yes, what does your yes mean?!”

The goal of a grandmother is very much to provide a model of being authentic. And if that’s the case, they have to be real about their feelings and realities, and saying a genuine no beats a half-hearted yes when it comes to authentic. No should neither mean rejection nor be reserved for when you’re totally incapable or unavailable. It could just mean

We all love to think our parents are invincible and ageless, but sadly, this isn’t the case. The first-time grandparent of forty is not the grandparent she is at sixty… or eighty. You get the idea. Our expectations (How long can you move in and help with the baby? Can we all come to you for the first days? Can you take over while I nap?) may be valid for the grandmother we once knew our mother to be, but it may not be who our mother is now. And as hard as it is for you to accept a new reality, it’s even harder for your mother to accept her own mortality. Watch for signs of weakness, her needing more help or sleep, or her hesitating before saying yes. Sometimes it’s your sensitivity that will help your mother feel less bad about being honest with her current limitations, and if she seems down about feeling less purposeful and helpful to you in a hands-on way, make sure to make her feel needed in other ways that are equally as important. You can appreciate her opinions, recipes, company and compliments, and that will make her still feel needed in her new capacity of being less physically capable. Let her know that her presence and her other shows of love are equally as special, even though she can’t be as strenuously involved in doing and giving. Joining you on an errand as opposed to doing it for you, ordering a gift certificate as opposed to a gift she found time and energy to buy and sharing a meal out together as opposed to one she cooked may be a great way for her to still feel part of your life. Maintaining the relationship is of essence, even though it may mean letting go of the help and relief we were used to having our mothers provide.

And you’ll give your loved ones permission to follow your lead and be people who are honest about what they choose to do and be, as opposed to feeling the pressure of living up to the image of all-perfect, all-giving and always agreeable.

The activity and energy level of the ideal grandmother isn’t always doable. After a whole day’s work or preparing for yom tov, being the interactive baker/shopper/activity generator isn’t what you may be feeling up to. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a critical role. As much as doing for and with grandchildren is precious, there’s another dimension that is just as (if not more) important to offer: the beauty of just being.

Sharing time that’s not productive or busy is gifting kids a meaningful new reality. Spending time listening, sharing, noticing the scenery and just enjoying being together is something parents don’t have that much time to do with their children.

The luxury of just being and making a child feel that their company is cherished is a precious grandparent prerogative.

Success in most relationships is defined by the feeling of shared intimacy. And as one of my clients once taught me, this can be best defined as “into-me-see!” If we learn about the person we’re relating to and really hear them, understand their world and wishes, and appreciate their individuality and who they really are then such a relationship is a tremendous success. If that’s our goal, the means to the end can take a lot of forms. And the proud title “grandmother” can be used for them all.

Part II Q: It seems like the new law is implementing changes to tax provisions that have been around for many years. For example, the child tax credit, personal exemptions, and the state and local tax deduction have all been modified in the new law. How will all these impact my family’s tax situation?

A: Thank you for your question. While no two tax situations are alike, we will outline the fundamental changes made to these tax provisions. However, it’s important to remember that the law involves very detailed rules, some of which are beyond the scope of this article. It is therefore vital to have a detailed discussion with your tax adviser regarding these complex matters.

CHILD TAX CREDIT: The child tax credit has been around for almost 20 years and has been a source of relief for many families. For qualifying taxpayers, the credit works as an actual dollar reduction in tax owed, up to $1,000 per child. Once the credit reduces a taxpayer’s liability to zero, some of the remaining amount may be refundable.

However, there are income limitations as well. Under the pre-2018 rules, the amount of the available credit began to gradually phase out for married taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $110,000 with the credit being completely unavailable once income reaches $130,000.

Under the new law, the child tax credit is doubled to $2,000. Additionally, the income range has been increased dramatically with the phaseout only beginning at $400,000. This will allow many more taxpayers to take this credit. While seemingly significant on a standalone basis, this benefit is offset by the loss of personal exemptions, discussed next.

PERSONAL EXEMPTIONS: As opposed to a credit, a personal exemption works as a deduction, which reduces income subject to tax.

Under the old law, most taxpayers were able to deduct approximately $4,000 for every dependent claimed on their tax return. For example, a family of five with adjusted gross income of $150,000 was eligible to reduce their taxable income by $20,250 of personal exemptions.

Under the new law, personal exemptions have been repealed in their entirety.

STATE AND LOCAL TAX DEDUCTION: The state and local tax deduction has its origins with the first introduction of the U.S. income tax in the early 1900s. Its primary purpose was to provide relief from multiple layers of tax.

While subject to its own set of rules and nuances, the fundamentals of the deduction allows taxpayers to reduce their federal taxable income by income and property tax paid to state and local governments. In high-tax

states such as New York, this has been very beneficial. For example, under the old law, a New York resident who paid $15,000 in New York State income taxes and another $15,000 in real estate taxes would exclude $30,000 of income for federal purposes (unless they were subject to alternative minimum tax, for another discussion).

For many decades, this deduction has been the subject of intense scrutiny and contentiousness among members in Congress. As part of the new law and after intense compromise, a new $10,000 cap on state and local taxes was implemented to partially fund various tax breaks in the law.

Thus, in our example above, the taxpayer would only be allowed to benefit from a $10,000 deduction. The other $20,000 previously deducted would no longer be a factor in a taxpayer’s itemized deductions.

STATES RESPOND: In response to the new law, high-tax states such as New York and California expect this new limit on deductibility to have a real adverse effect on their

local economies. As a result, some states are in the process of formulating tax plans to mitigate the effect of the new federal limit. One of the ideas currently being discussed is for states to allow residents to pay a portion of their tax liability to a state-funded cause such as education, and reclassify that as a charitable contribution for federal purposes.

Although the IRS considers governmental contributions as being a valid charity, being that taxpayers would record that contribution as a credit on their state return, the question being debated is whether the taxpayer’s contribution would be disallowed due to the benefits received. There are various court opinions in addition to previous guidance from the IRS Chief Counsel, all of which are beyond the scope of this article. Expect additional discussions on this topic to continue throughout the year.

Narrowing It Down “HI, THIS IS MRS. GOLD,” said the voice at the other end of the line.

“I was wondering if you could help me? I have had office jobs on and off over the past 15 years, and when I started reading your column, I was intrigued at the possibility of finding a job that I really enjoy. Do you have a few minutes to discuss this with me?”

Sure, that’s what I do.

After listening to Mrs. Gold explain her story, I got the bigger picture. Here was a smart, talented and wonderful person who had devoted herself to being a wife and mother. Now, however, she wondered if she could find work that wouldn’t take away from her home life, but add to her as an individual, which, of course, would make her a

happier mother.

Since I am a big believer in prioritizing a family first, I understood her well and was excited at the possibility of helping her.

I know firsthand how much of a difference it makes when work is not just a bore, something done to pay the bills, but rather something that uses creative ability, creates positive energy and gives a person the wonderful feeling of being able to share their unique talents with others.

Mrs. Gold decided to go ahead with aptitude testing as she knew from experience that she had never

found that her work excited her in the way she wanted it to. Additionally, after having ka”h a few children, the bills were only increasing, but her salary was staying pretty much the same. With bar mitzvahs and chasunahs in the future, she was ready to move on to something with greater earning potential.

After meeting and seeing her results, it was obvious what was missing in Mrs. Gold’s workday. As someone with very high problemsolving skills, her job was pretty much comprised of the same old humdrum tasks, day in, day out. Of course she was not mentally stimulated! Additionally, as someone who

I wish for every one of my clients to experience this same level of satisfaction at work. loves to use creativity, she was all but trapped, like a bird with clipped wings, without any outlet for her innovative ideas. The joy that spread

across her face when she heard this, and the deep sigh that followed and expressed so much pent-up stress, said enough. She knew she had skills, but where and how to use them? Was it even possible?

Schooling was out of the question; some training, if not too expensive, would be something she and her husband were willing to consider. What could we come up with?

Mrs. Gold had a strong leaning toward becoming a unique professional, starring in an area where she could become a sought-after advisor. She would not be satisfied being “another” teacher, bookkeeper, salesperson. She needed an area to specialize in. As someone with very fine taste, she is always asked for her opinion in jewelry, home design and clothing purchases.

She has a wonderful balance of understanding physical, real-life realities, as well as the emotions that beautiful things can bring up when enjoyed properly. She could decorate a home on a dime, for instance, with a focus on the right colors and textures to create an ambience of class. And when she chooses jewelry, Mrs. Gold is one of those lucky people who just know which costume jewelry can be pulled off and which don’t cut it. She also has a love of nature and imagined using her technical skills to create landscape designs that could be incorporated by high-end outdoor design firms.

This narrowed her choices down to three areas, which all matched her personal skills, interests and personality: jewelry design and sales, home decorating and landscaping. We discussed the pros and cons of each and will have an additional meeting to make a final decision once we gather more information on each option.

The main thing is that Mrs. Gold’s priorities are still most important, and her career choice will serve to complement her roles in life while adding that missing bit of excitement, passion, and of course, finances.

I wish for every one of my clients to experience this same level of satisfaction at work. As this column comes to a close, I’m leaving with so many new clients, friends and partnerships that have been borne of this space in The Monsey View. I’ve been awed by the brave mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, business owners and employees who have contacted me as a result of recognizing their own career struggles, and I am grateful that I had this opportunity to further fulfill my personal career dream.

THE KITCHEN After World War II, during what many consider America’s favorite decade, the United States recovered with an explosion of good economy and a booming population who lived what is known as the American Dream. This mentality was very much visible in the pop of color that was all over at the time, including in the main hub of any home — the kitchen. The steel industry was still very much in high-production mode after the war, which is why the cabinets were created from reasonably priced steel and then painted brightly shaded colors. Refrigerators, toasters and mixers were then purchased to match in colors like Buttercup Yellow, Cherry Red, Turquoise, etc.

The revolutionary 1950s kitchen was also created with sleek lines and open layouts, and this was when peninsulas, islands, eating bars and free-floating upper cabinets were introduced.

Also new was the concept of built-in layouts, which meant no more random placement of kitchen appliances; rather they were incorporated into the flow of counters and cabinets.

The American Dream also encouraged more laid-back and comfortable living, and it was during this time that small conveniences like lazy susans and pull-out garbage cans became popular. Dinette sets in the kitchen, now made possible with more open kitchen layouts, also meant no more everyday dining in the dining room.

THE ROTARY PHONE Rotary phones are something of an age marker. “Do you still remember those rotary phones? Remember what redialing involved?” The touch-tone phone was introduced in 1962 at the Seattle World’s Fair, but made its official debut the following year.

However, it took a decade or two for it to gain popularity, maybe due to the fact that phones were not owned, but rather leased to subscribers by the telephone company.

THE VACUUM CLEANER Before World War II, vacuum cleaners were more of a luxury item, but the booming economy and robust middle class after the war resulted in it becoming more popular, reflecting the trend in homes at the time, which was all about convenience for the housewife.

THE ELECTRIC IRON By the 1940s and 50s, electric irons were becoming more widespread. The iron in the photo shown also features the bright colors of the time, when proud housewives would choose their favorite color and match their appliances, big and small.

THE WASHING MACHINE By 1940, 60 percent of homes that were wired to electricity boasted a washing machine. However, early models, aside from being clunky, worked with a dangerous power wringer that resulted in terrible injuries. Only during the 40s and 50s were washing machines built with spinning capabilities, and although the war generally stopped manufacturing production, some manufacturers were given permission to continue improving and introducing newer and better models. Soon manufacturers built automatic washing machines, which in those days meant that a timer would shut off the washing cycle automatically to allow clothes to soak. However, it would still need mechanical intervention to continue with the next cycle.
