RE: NATURE’S CANDY (ISSUE #136) I’d like to point out that when making the gummy bears, you can add Vitamin C powder, probiotics or any other vitamin to the mixture (once it has cooled somewhat). Since most kids’ chewable vitamins are loaded with refined sugar, artificial sweeteners and/or other toxic ingredients (that actually render many vitamins less effective), and since the vitamins that don’t are often unpalatable, this simple solution will get your kids to take those essential vitamins without fuss. Dear Concerned Consumer, I admire a parent for spending money and time to help their children who are suffering, especially when the medical world has no real solutions for flu and other viruses. Kudos to those parents who help build their children’s immune systems so they should be able to cleanse themselves and get well the way Hashem designed our bodies. However, as an educated consumer of natural products, I would like to ask you if you can do a little further research and have your doctor share the name of the product meant to heal the flu that he found contains milchig, fleishig and treif. Even someone not as educated as myself would find it very hard to believe that a natural remedy would need to include milk and meat in any product. There are no healing powers in milk or meat. RE: ROOM IN THE HEART (ISSUE #136) It is very sad to hear that your children do not have a place to learn, but this is not a reason to label Monsey as not providing hachnosas orchim. First of all, there are guests feeling very welcome in Monsey all the time. Many of our own guests keep saying that the most comfortable place to come to is Monsey! Moreover, Monsey is very welcoming, but not only to visitors. Let me explain: Monsey used to be a quiet, calm community, rich in values and plain in fashion, with simple stores, modest clothing, and insignificant traffic. But then everything changed. Houses were bought, buildings with multiple apartments went up, Monsey and the villages around filled up, and now, sadly, Monsey
isn’t the same. Now, in regard to your problem with schools: I am a mechanech very much feeling your pain. Remember the days classes had 22 to 23 children each, in classrooms built for that capacity? They slowly filled up, and now there are 30 to 32 children in each class. Think about how cramped these children feel and how it affects their behavior. The rebbeim and teachers are overworked and do not get a raise in proportion to the additional number of children in the class. They cannot teach the way they should, and parents are complaining. No, there really isn’t room! The best idea would be to open new mosdos sponsored by the builders and developers that are bringing such a large crowd. They should pay a percent of each apartment/condo sold toward a new cheder/school so that everyone, finally feeling welcome, should have a place to learn and a bus to wait for! M.S.

Everyone knows that fireworks are dangerous, but not everyone is aware that innocent-looking gun caps are also dangerous. Last year Purim was not a happy time for us. At one point during the day, there was a great explosion, and my son’s pants went on fire. The source? Some caps that were in his pocket. My son’s hand and both of his legs got burned, and it was a miracle his pants didn’t keep on burning. The chaos that went on after the explosion is indescribable: the shouting, crying and ambulances arriving; the water, creams and bandages — and the pain continued for months afterward. The companies producing these caps know very well that they are dealing with explosive material, and that’s why some of them warn, in very tiny letters, against “improper use” of the caps. They want to be legally covered against any lawsuits brought by people suffering injuries caused by explosions and fires. But who could even read these borderline microscopic warnings? And my son had used the caps properly, under adult supervision. At the hospital we met many people who had gotten burned the same way. That’s because caps rubbing against one another is dangerous, and hand contact also can warm them up and be even more dangerous. Any touch to these explosive materials can cause them to go off. I visited a store to warn them against selling the stuff, and the saleslady said that just the day before, a boy was examining a box of caps in the store, and they exploded in his hands. The owner, of course, refused to stop selling such a profitable item Every year the hospitals are full of children who in the best case got burned and in the worst case actually lost fingers or suffered serious eye injuries from these caps. Don’t bring these things into your house. Tell your children not to touch them or go near them at all. Don’t encourage the sale of these dangerous explosives, and ask the store owner who sells them, “How do you plan on taking responsibility for somebody getting injured?” C.D.

I GOT A CALL THIS WEEK from a mother, let’s call her Mrs. Worried, who was concerned about her nineyear-old daughter’s rapid weight gain. She asked me if I work with kids that age, and whether or not I would recommend that her daughter start a “diet.” As a mother of give kids, one of whom is a 12-year-old girl, I understood her hesitation to put a child on a restrictive “diet.” In fact, when I first started working at Nutrition by Tanya, I asked Tanya to try to schedule the kids below high school-age with a different nutrition counselor! Wisely, Tanya was not willing to accept that, and we had a heart to heart in which she explained to me that mothers who are concerned about their children’s weight will stop at nothing to get the weight under control. Unfortunately, wellmeaning doctors and nutritionists can potentially do more harm than good, restricting the child unnecessarily and leaving them with poor body image. Better to allow them to follow our fun, nonrestrictive plan, with loads of support and encouragement, than have them end up somewhere else where damage may be incurred. One example: I have one client, a seventh-grader, who is following our plan exceptionally well. During one of our weigh-ins, she told me that her doctor referred to her as “the fat rat”! The doctor meant that my client is genetically prone to carrying extra weight, like certain lab rats who are overweight despite a very low-calorie diet. Perhaps the doctor thought she was being humorous, or even thought she was validating my client’s struggle, but being called a “fat rat” by a respect-
ed adult in a position of authority was very hurtful to this young, impressionable girl. Back to Mrs. Worried... She wanted to know if her daughter is really going to be able to have the self-control needed to stick to a “diet.” My response to her was that the first step in assessing readiness is to determine whether this desire for weight loss is coming from herself or from her child. I see children

gift you can give a child. as young as eight years of age stick to a food plan! Conversely, I see full-grown adults who are only on the plan because their mothers signed them up (yes, even married adults!), and the desire to lose weight is simply not there. Self-control will only be there if the desire to lose the weight is there. Mrs. Worried told me that her daughter was always happy-go-lucky and comfortable in her own skin. However, she had been recently teased for being overweight and came home crying and begging her mother to help her lose weight. Although it is unfortunate that the child’s self-esteem was shaken, I believed that this experience would
help motivate her daughter to stay on plan and exercise selfcontrol. The next step, I advised Mrs. Worried, is to do a bit of a readiness test with her child. The child would be asked to prepare a salad each day for lunch and choose healthy snacks for two weeks straight — tasks that an average nineyear-old is technically capable of. If her daughter would actually follow through with this, then she would likely to be able to stick to our food plan. After working with many many children, I have come to believe that it is the best gift you can give a child. On the plan, children learn about the value of eating whole grains and vegetables. They learn about the differences between a carbohydrate, a protein and a fat. They learn about which snacks will keep them full and how much challah to eat. These children learn that dieting does not mean severely restricting food intake. They learn that they can enjoy all foods in moderation, without the feeling of deprivation that comes from extreme dieting. They learn that they can enjoy their food and still maintain a healthy weight. By teaching these things to children at a young age, they are less likely to face the lifetime struggle with the two extremes of severe restriction and complete indulgence. A FAMOUS ROSH YESHIVAH once learned that a certain yasom had been denied admission to his yeshivah. The rosh yeshivah stated that if the bochur could not attend the yeshivah, then he himself would leave the yeshivah as well. Needless to say, the bochur was admitted to the yeshivah, and the rosh yeshivah remained rosh yeshivah. It is worth noting that this story of tremendous self-sacrifice is a true story that took place very recently in our own times. This week’s parsha is the only parsha in the entire Torah, beginning from the time of Moshe Rabbeinu’s birth, that does not mention Moshe’s name. After the incident of the Eigel Hazahav, Hashem told Moshe that He would destroy the Jewish people, and Moshe responded by saying: “V’atah im tisa chatasam… — If You would, forgive their sin, but if not, please erase me from the book You have written” (Shemos 32:32). Rashi explains that Moshe was stating his willingness to be erased from the entire Torah in order to secure forgiveness for the Bnei Yisroel. Holding a position of leadership is not necessarily the same as being a true leader. A person could hold a position of leadership but still have selfish motives. In every relationship, giving flows in both directions, just as the word noson (to give) reads the same backward and forward. As much as a leader contributes to the community, there is also the potential for selfbenefit, such as power, kavod and money. In ruchniyus as well, there is the potential for self-benefit. It says in Pirkei Avos (1:2) that people who work for the community are guaranteed success in their work for the community because of their zechus avos, but they will receive s’char as if their success came about entirely through their own efforts. What is the sign of a true leader? A true leader puts the needs of the community ahead of his own needs. Moshe Rabbeinu was the ultimate leader. He not only placed the needs of the Bnei Yisroel ahead of his own needs; he was even willing to give up his place in the Torah for the sake of the Bnei Yisroel. And far from
seeking a position of leadership, which could be a sign of having selfish motives, Moshe had initially turned down the opportunity to lead the Bnei Yisroel. He was so concerned with their needs that he was willing to refuse the mantle of leadership if there would be someone more qualified. There are stories of great rebbes who did not want to assume the mantle of leadership, but who became rebbes only after the chassidim begged them to do so. Many rabbonim who have received the greatest kavod are also known for their great anavah. When World War II broke out, there were numerous rabbonim, such as the Rav of Nitra, zt”l, and the third Lisker Rebbe, zt”l, who chose to remain with their kehillos rather than accept opportunities to escape to safety. These rabbonim made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of their communities. Many people may not realize it, but good parents are wonderful examples of great leaders. What good parent would not make every sacrifice imaginable to help their children? Even if a child has done something very wrong, chalilah, good parents do not give up on their children. Good parents fight for their children, and good parents sacrifice for their children. Good parents do not simply place their children’s needs ahead of their own needs; their children’s needs are their own needs. Likewise, the needs of a community are the needs of a great leader. We are all leaders in some way, as parents, rebbeim or teachers, older siblings, camp counselors, etc. We may not realize it, but it is a fact. We all hold the spiritual, emotional and physical welfare of members of Klal Yisroel in our hands. Whenever we speak to a child, we must remember this tremendous responsibility. We have the power to break down that child, chas v’shalom, or to build that child up. We must recognize this power and use it with tremendous care. It can be extremely challenging, but we have so many role models to look up to, the greatest of them all being Moshe Rabbeinu. May we all learn from his example and become truly great leaders to all who look to us.
Holding a position of leadership is not necessarily the same as being a true leader.

The Great Change From Burglar to Baal Teshuvah Based upon a lecture by Dr. Jack Cohen

“You shall not steal” (Shemos 20:13) For years, the following story remained a personal story, unbeknownst to the world. Only recently did the man who had experienced this turnaround of such extraordinary proportion share the following words.
I AM 44 YEARS OLD, but I have been through so much in my life that I look like I am 70. From the age of ten, I was out on the street and never wanted to go to school. In fact, I ended up spending a good number of years in jail. I will not disclose my real name, but suffice it to say that in the world of the Mafia in Israel, I am well-known. It would be easy for me to come up with many excuses as to why I didn’t grow up to be an honest person and about the lack of opportunities in my life. However, if you break the law you are a criminal, and ultimately, that is exactly what I was. Over the years I was involved in small crimes, such as thefts and break-ins, and I also got caught for committing an armed robbery, which sent me into jail to serve a long sentence. Shortly after I completed my last jail sentence about six years ago, I began planning the robbery of a jewelry store in Jerusalem. I received the information that a lot of money and a large amount of jewelry were kept in the store. Since the store was situated on a quiet side street, I knew I could walk in, hold up the owner and carry off the goods without drawing too much attention. As part of my planning, I decided to scout out the layout, sales-

person and the location of the safe. I wanted to be wellprepared for this kind of crime, and that would necessitate visiting it a few times, getting to know the store well and casually chatting with the salespeople. I would then be ready to perform the robbery. Early one evening, shortly before closing time, I went to get a good look at the store. The owner, a friendly and polite older gentleman, was alone in the shop, and I asked to see necklace options for my wife. This was an outright lie — I was not married and had no interest in buying a necklace for anyone. He proceeded to show me all kinds of necklaces, and even opened the safe to bring out different styles. “What a reckless thing to do!” I said to myself. “Why would the owner turn his back and leave me here with all these goods? I could have easily ransacked the safe and grabbed whatever I wanted!” Then the store owner proceeded to ask me a little bit about my wife’s interests in jewelry. I began to fabricate a story. I came up with the tale that we had recently gotten married and were a young couple without a penny to our name. I had managed to scrape together a few dollars to buy her a surprise birthday gift, however. This story really seemed to touch the old man. He asked what type of job I have, and I replied that I was unemployed. The storeowner then began pitying me and offering me encouragement. That’s when I decided it was time to get out of there before I started to like him. But before I could, he looked me straight in the eye and said, “Young man, you look like a talented fellow who just needs a little help in life. I
am willing to lend you some money so you can invest in a little business, maybe jewelry, and provide for yourself and your family.” My mouth dropped open, and before I could utter a sound, he hurried to the safe, took out some money and slapped a big wad of bills on the counter. “Here is $10,000! Go start a business!” “Are you crazy?” I asked him. “How can you lend money to a complete stranger? What do you know about me?” “Listen,” he said, “I have been in business for 48 years, and I have a good eye for judging people. I can see that you are a decent person with a good heart, and I trust you to return the money when you can.” I was shocked. In my entire life, no one had ever trusted me, even with a dollar, and here this store owner was trusting me with $10,000! “Now listen, my friend,” I said to him. “You are getting carried away. How do you know you will ever get it back?” “Young man,” he said, “stop asking questions. I can see straight to your heart, and I see you have a heart full of gold, just like my necklaces. You are an honest man, and I don’t have the slightest doubt that you will return the money.” I started thinking to myself, “Wow, this man is unbelievable! I don’t even have to risk a robbery. I can just stand here, get the cash and run for it. What could be better than that?” Yet it wasn’t so simple. If he was willing to trust me, then he was a friend, and could I really steal from a friend who trusted me? I decided that it would be better to refuse the money and simply come back next week and steal the money. But the speed at which he handed me those dollars simply confused me and I just took it. When I returned home, I broke down and cried like a child. Had anyone ever believed in me before
today? Had anyone ever trusted me? True, in the Mafia they knew I kept my word, but what does it mean that thieves trust each other? All they trust each other is to divide the goods they steal. And here was an honest and kind man, who was never a part of my life, yet he trusted and respected me. I was determined to pay him back to the very last cent. I bought some goods with the money and sold it for a profit until I tripled my initial investment. Four months later, I returned to
come: an honest, decent person. I thought about how to go about this and decided to enroll in a yeshivah. I began studying Torah, and over the course of time, I became a baal teshuvah. This was no easy task, but I managed to get on track. Eventually, my mentors from the yeshivah found me a wife. We were complete opposites. My wife was innocent, modest and bashful with no demands. I felt as if Hashem was sending me the gift of happiness straight from Heaven. The wedding ring was bought from my friend, the jeweler. One year into our marriage, we celebrated the birth of our daughter. I bought my wife a beautiful necklace, again purchased from my jeweler. It cost a pretty penny, but believe me, I would have loved to buy an even more expensive one. Every now and then, my past criminal friends would visit me and ask if I wanted to join them to commit a crime. But I would say, “I am done with that life. No more crime.” They eventually accepted my new way of life and realized it was all over. My wife never asked me about my past, but I think she was clever enough to understand what had happened. Every once in a while, my old friends would knock on the door, and she would see exactly who they were and what they were like. Two years later, we were blessed with the birth of our first son. We made a big celebration for his bris, inviting several big rabbonim from Yerushalayim. My friends came, both from the past and the present. But one friend was not invited. I was too afraid to invite my jeweler lest someone blurt out how long I was married. The jeweler would then realize that I had lied to him years earlier. Nevertheless, the next day, I went to his store to buy my wife a present upon the birth of our new baby boy. As soon as I stepped into the store, I knew something was wrong.
I was shocked. In my entire life, no one had ever trusted me, even with a dollar, and here this store owner was trusting me with $10,000! the store and placed $10,000 on the counter along with $2,000 in interest. But the owner refused to take the interest. I told him to take it as a token of my appreciation and respect, but he wouldn’t take an extra penny. I once again asked him, “How could you be willing to give so much money to someone you don’t even know?” “As you get older,” he said, “you get to know more about life. As soon as I looked at you, I knew you were a good guy who wanted to earn an honest living. I could tell that you didn’t have an easy life, and I just wanted to give you a chance. Now young man, go make a living and support your family! And make sure you always come back here to buy jewelry for your wife!” “What a man!” I thought to myself. I left the store with tears in my eyes and joy in my heart. Now I knew what I wanted to be-

The owner looked like he had aged greatly. “What’s the matter, Papa?” I asked. He began to cry and couldn’t speak. I put my arm around him and tried calming him down. Then he finally managed to tell me a few words. “You don’t want to know what happened. There was a break-in last week, and my safe was ransacked. Everything is gone. A life’s worth of savings, all the jewelry that I purchased on credit, and jewelry that people had brought in for service. Thousands upon thousands of dollars in cash is gone. I’m ruined! I will be in debt as long as I live. Take a look at me. I’m an impoverished old man.” As I watched him cry, I was filled with anger at the person who was capable of committing such a despicable act. How could he ruin the life of an old man? But then it struck me that this was exactly what I had been planning to do to him five years earlier. I was also a heartless person then. I went on to buy one other piece of jewelry and told him, “Be strong.” As I left the shop, I thought about what he said and decided to take a plan of action. I went to pay a visit to some of my old friends in the underground Mafia. They were surprised to see my covered head and beard, though they had long gotten used to the idea that I was not involved in the world of crime. In a strong tone of voice, I told them that in one week I wanted to know who robbed the jeweler. Two days later, I received the information. The thief was a strong, dangerous fellow, and it would be no pleasure dealing with him. When I went to meet him, he knew my name and didn’t turn me

away. I spoke to him in the language of the Mafia and informed him that I expected the stolen goods to be returned to their owner before Shabbos. Otherwise, I told him, he would need to deal with me. It sounded as if I was declaring war, which means very serious business in the Mafia. I told him, “Think whatever you want to think, but I expect the goods to be returned before Shabbos.” He suggested that we go to an arbitrator to solve the matter. In the world of the Mafia, there are judges who decide what to do with stolen merchandise. We went to a well-known figure in the world of crime in Tel Aviv, and it was obvious whose side he was on. “Why are you mixing into his business?” I was asked. “He robbed that store! That is his turf. That area is his to rob from. And besides, you’re not involved in the business of theft anymore, so why does it matter to you?” I then told the man the truth. I told him that I had planned to rob the store some years ago, and that the owner saved me and turned me on the path to become a baal teshuvah. I told him that it was all thanks to that old man that I became who I was today, discovered Torah and met my wife. I explained that I was indebted to him forever. Besides, if it weren’t for him, I told the arbitrator, chances are that this area would have still been my designated territory to rob from, and anything they would do would need my approval. They arbitrator and even the robber were impressed with my story, and the arbitrator ruled that the robber would need to return everything to the store owner, except ten percent that he could retain. The robber then promised to return the goods and the cash before Shabbos.
And that is exactly what happened. Two messengers showed up at my house with two suitcases containing the diamonds and cash before Shabbos. I still had to figure out how to come up with $20,000, though. I withdrew all of my savings and took out a loan. On Motzei Shabbos, as soon as Shabbos was over, I went to the jeweler with two suitcases and a note, rang the doorbell and ran away. From a distance, I saw him open the door and take in the suitcases. When I returned home, I knew I had no assets and a substantial outstanding debt from loans. But my heart was overflowing with joy as my wife waited for me. “I have just done true teshuvah for all of my past deeds,” I said to her. She didn’t ask me anything, but the look on her face showed that she believed me. May Hashem bless her. I don’t know why I deserve such a special and fantastic wife. I now work steadily, have a wonderful family and make a good living. Although it is not as much as I made in the old days as a criminal, I am so happy with my life. I thank Hashem for my beloved wife and beautiful children, and especially for those five minutes that somebody first believed in me. Those few moments changed my life. Victory for Eruv Association as Mahwah, Montvale Back Down on Lawsuits MORE THAN FIVE MONTHS after being slapped with a federal religious discrimination lawsuit for insisting that its utility poles could not be used as part of an eruv, Mahwah officials have agreed to a settlement that would allow the eruv to remain in place. NorthJersey.com reported that the Mahwah Township Council agreed to the settlement by a 5-2 vote on January 30. Mahwah agreed to pay the Bergen Rockland Eruv Association $10,000 or a mutually agreed upon amount within 20 days of the settlement, while the eruv committee agreed to recolor or replace all lechis within the next 12 months to match the utility poles they are attached to. Under the settlement, the eruv association would have the legal right to continue increasing or modifying the eruv’s coverage within or outside the township, but agreed to confer with the local government should any future changes be made. “We’re trying to do the right thing,” said Township Council President Rob Hermansen. “This is a good town with good people, and we’re making this decision for good people.” Hermansen said that he felt that both parties walked away from the settlement with a fair deal, though neither could claim a complete victory. “Our lawsuit against Mahwah was filed to preserve and protect the eruv that has been up in a small portion of Mahwah since last summer, which has allowed many families to enjoy the same religious freedom as so many others throughout Bergen and Rockland counties and beyond,” said Yehudah Buchweitz, an attorney for the Bergen Rockland Eruv Association. “This settlement preserves and protects that eruv.” According to NJ.com, 22 other locations in the Garden State already have eruvin in place. While Mahwah may have reached an agreement with the eruv association, it is still the subject of a ninecount lawsuit filed by the state attorney general in response to the ordinances that it enacted last summer regarding both the eruv and banning out-of-state residents from

township parks. The township backpedaled on the parks issue in December, reopening its parks to all visitors. The decision to leave the eruv in place did not sit well with everyone, with one resident telling the township council before the settlement vote, “I know the judge and the New Jersey attorney general are trying to force you to resolve this matter immediately. Do not bow to their attempts to coerce action. You have an army of people ready to support you.” Mahwah was not the only township in Northern New Jersey to express opposition to the eruv. When concerns about the Mahwah eruv became public, both the neighboring townships of Montvale and Upper Saddle River issued stop work orders to prevent the construction of eruvin within their boundaries, and both were sued by the Bergen Rockland Eruv Association. Just last week Montvale approved a settlement agreement with the eruv association that will allow an eruv to be constructed and will have the township paying the eruv committee $10,000 in legal fees. Attorneys for Upper Saddle River have been negotiating with the eruv committee since mid-January, with the deadline for a resolution coming this week. Several key officials in New Jersey, including Governor Phil Murphy, Senator Cory Booker and Congressman Josh Gottheimer, have all condemned the opposition to the eruv, categorizing it as anti-Semitic.

PITA CHIPS Yossi’s pita 1 cup duck sauce 1 Tbsp. mustard 1 tsp. honey 1. Cut pita into eight triangles (they should look like mini pizza slices). 2. Combine sauce ingredients, and smear evenly over pita triangles. 3. Bake at 350° for 10–12 minutes.
CORNED BEEF 1 package sliced corned beef 1/4 cup raspberry jam 1/4 cup honey 1 Tbsp. vinegar 1 Tbsp. ketchup 1. Combine all sauce ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. 2. Roll up each slice of corned beef, and place seam side down in a baking pan. 3. Pour the sauce over the corned beef rolls, and bake at 350° for 20–25 minutes.
TO ASSEMBLE: Place one pita triangle on a plate, and top with two corned beef rolls. Cover with a second slice of pita, and stack an additional two corned beef rolls. Finish off with a third pita slice, and garnish with a pretty toothpick.

INGREDIENTS: 6–8 slices club steak 2½ Tbsp. onion soup mix Oil for sauteing 2 Spanish onions, sliced in rings 1 box portobello mushrooms
SAUCE: 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce 1/4 cup white wine 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. garlic Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS: 1. Sprinkle soup mix onto the meat and place in a pan. Cover the pan tightly. 2. Bake at 350° for 3 hours. 3. Combine sauce ingredients and pour over meat. 4. Cover meat again, and bake at 250° for 2–3 hours. 5. Saute sliced onions in oil, adding the mushrooms at the end to saute for only a few minutes. 6. Serve vegetables alongside meat.

INGREDIENTS: 1 box Klein’s pareve vanilla ice cream 1 package frozen strawberries 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 cup pomegranate juice 1/2 pomegranate, seeded 1. Allow the ice cream to defrost. 2. Combine strawberries, confectioners’ sugar and pomegranate juice in a food processor and blend well. 3. Combine melted ice cream with fruit puree. 4. Add the pomegranate seeds, mixing gently, and refreeze ice cream.
ICE BOWLS For a masterful presentation, serve ice cream in these ice bowls. To create them, you will need a glass cup, plastic cup and some small flowers or buds. 1. Fill the glass with water halfway up. 2. Place a plastic cup filled with water into the cup, so some water comes up on the sides between the glass and plastic cup. 3. Stick the small flowers into the water between the glass and plastic cup. Freeze. 4. Once frozen, remove the plastic cup. You should have an indentation in the ice. Fill it with two scoops of ice cream and serve with your favorite sauce on top. Garnish with a small spoon.

MIXOLOGY HAS BEEN STUDIED by hundreds of bartenders and drink mixers, and there are many books on the topic. There are some basic principles, like the importance of using good-quality ingredients; of the result being pleasing to the eye; of the drink sharpening the appetite, and not dulling it; and of the drinks being well iced. The components of a cocktail should also follow the basic principles. First there’s the base, which is the main ingredient of the cocktail and should be 75 percent of the total volume of the drink before the ice is added. The base is usually a spirit like whiskey, gin, rum, etc. Then there’s the modifying agent, which is the secondary ingredient. The modifying agent adds the character to the drink, softens the alcohol and enhances the flavor. This could be a wine, liquor, fruit juice, cream, etc. Last is the flavoring or coloring agent, which makes up only a small percent of the cocktail. This last component is an ingredient that gives a special quality or flavor to the drink. It can be a special syrup like grenadine, a mint-flavored liquor or syrup that is used in place of sugar. In general, cocktails fall into one of two categories. They can either be aromatic, which uses wine or spirits as modifying agents, or sours, which uses fruit juice and sugar as modifying agents. For cocktails in the second category, it is recommended to have an 8:2:1 ratio with eight parts spirits to two parts sours to one part sugar. Most cocktails are simple variations of one another, and when you know the principles, you can switch out either one in the ratio and come up with a new delicious cocktail. Now that Purim is here and everything is v’nahafoch hu, we will flip the ratio and do one part spirits, two parts sugar and eight parts sour, even though it goes against all principles of mixology. This new ratio will make it palatable even for the faint of heart.

SORBET FRAPPE 2 cups pineapple juice Juice of 2 limes Juice of 2 lemons 8 cups lemon-lime soda 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1–2 cups Smirnoff vodka or Dry Gin 1 can pineapple chunks 1 can sour cherries 10 scoops of three-color sorbet In a large punch bowl, whisk together all the juices and confectioners’ sugar until dissolved. Whisk in pineapple chunks and cherries. Add the scoops of sorbet and enjoy.

TEQUILA SUNRISE CUPS 4 oz. orange juice 2 oz. tequila ½ oz. grenadine (see below) Orange slice and maraschino cherry for garnish You can purchase ready-made grenadine syrup or make it yourself. To make it yourself, boil 2 cups pomegranate juice with 2 cups sugar. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, and then pour into a bottle with a tight-sealing lid. The key to the sunrise effect is not to stir the drink. First pour the tequila and orange juice into the glass, and then add the grenadine, which will naturally sink to the bottom.

little attention to whether your design matches mine; the goal is to have an outcome that is pleasing to your creative eye. Try out your design a couple of times before Purim to get comfortable with the materials, and have fun painting!

SUPPLIES: 1. FACE PAINT CAKES. These look like watercolor paints. The brand I use is Snazaroo. Michaels sells a variety of sets with different amounts and colors for different needs. If you’re buying these paints just to use them occasionally, buy the sets with the smallest-sized cakes. Always test the paint on a small area of skin before use to ensure that the paint agrees with the model.

2. FACE PAINT BRUSHES. You need a thin- and thick-tipped brush. I used the Snazaroo three-brush set, also found at Michaels, which also comes with the flatedged one. If you don’t have a flat-edged one, you can use the thick-tipped brush instead.
8. GLITTER, optional. I bought white glitter dust from the Mamma Clown brand online. Glitter dust puffs a cloud of glitter onto the face, but there are gel varieties available in small cakes as well. Before choosing glitter, make sure it is safe for use on the face and eyes.
3. FACE PAINT SPONGES. You can find
HOW TO BEGIN: 1. Pick a large, uncluttered area and spread out your supplies on a paper towel. 2. Spray all of your paints, brushes and sponges from afar with water. 3. Before loading your paintbrush, make sure that your paints and brushes are very moist, but not dripping. Rub the sides of your brush back and forth over the paint until you have a nice amount of paint on it. If your brush is still too dry, spray more water onto it or dip just the tip of your brush into the cup of water. Before using your brush, wipe off any excess water that may have gathered on the brush’s handle or near the tip so it won’t drip into your design.

4. Before loading your sponge, make sure that your paints and sponge are very moist. Using one corner of the sponge, rub it back and forth over your paint until you have enough paint on it. 5. Before using your loaded brush or sponge, try it out on the back of your hand until you reach the desired consistency. 6. To use glitter, spray water onto the face once from far. Then tell your model to gently close their eyes, and puff the glitter onto the face from arm’s length away as many times as desired. You can also apply the glitter while the paint is still wet. This may last longer as the glitter will stick straight onto the paint.

TIPS: 1. In general, I recommend spraying your brushes and sponges over dipping them into water. 2. Use a thin brush and less hand pressure for thinner strokes, and a thick brush and more hand pressure for thicker strokes. The flat-edged brush is great for filling in shapes and leaves behind a smooth surface without unnecessary stroke marks, but a thick brush will also work if you have no flat-edged brush. 3. When creating line-work (drawing) with your brush, try to hold it at a 90-degree angle against the model’s face. For stability, lean your pinky on an unpainted area of the face. 4. When using a sponge to cover an area, use slight pressure to rub in the paint, and then dab on it to get a nice, even and opaque consistency. 5. When painting over the eyes, it’s better to use a sponge than a paintbrush.
Don’t press too hard; rather apply a few layers to achieve the right thickness. Tell your model to close their eyes softly, like when they’re sleeping, to help prevent crease marks in the paint over the eyelids. Also, be sure to tell them to keep their eyes closed until the paint is dry. 6. Large shapes that you paint should be small enough to leave enough room for an imaginary border around the entire design. When you look at a designed face, you should be able to see all the designs without turning the model’s head. 7. You can wipe away parts of your design by wrapping a baby wipe over your finger and removing anything unwanted. 8. Don’t let yourself to get distracted or disappointed by letting your model look in the mirror before you’re done. The design is only expected to look good at the end.

LION: A. 1. Paint half circles on top of each eyebrow for ears. Draw a circular shape on each side of the face, connecting each “ear� end to corners of the mouth. 2. From the end of each nostril, paint small arcs downward toward the mouth. This will be the outline for the muzzle. Then paint a small triangle under the mouth. 3. Paint a cluster of wavy lines between the ears to form a clump of hair. B. 1. Fill in the yellow mask, leaving spaces for white in the ears. Make sure to get into the creases on the sides of the nose. 2. Sponge little semicircle shapes in the ears. Fill in the muzzle under the nose and the triangle under the mouth, going over the lips as well. If you go out of the lines and want to clean up, wrap a baby wipe over your finger and redefine the shape. C. 1. Rub the sponge on the back of your hand until the paint is sheer. Sponge a little bit on the inner side of each ear and a thin layer on the outer sides of the cheeks, only covering a small portion of the face. You can blend it by loading a sponge with a little yellow and sponging over the border where the yellow and brown meet. D. 1. Outline the clump of hair with sharp wavy lines. 2. Outline the outer ears as well as the semicircles on the inside. In each white semicircle, draw three lines flicking outward from the inner corner. 3. (Do this step only if the child is willing to being painted over the eyes with a paintbrush.) Ask the model to close their eyes softly. From the inner corner of the eye going over the eyelid to the side of the face, paint a wavy line slanting up at the end. 4. Paint four or five jagged triangular shapes going down the side of the face. Do this by using a connected zigzag motion to create the illusion of fur. The last point should swoop down to meet the muzzle. 5. Loosely outlining the top of the muzzle, paint two small arcs going upward from the corners of the mouth. Add a small twirl on top of each curve. 6. Paint just the bottom edge of the nose and fill in under the nostrils as well. Then paint a very thin line from under the nose reaching the lip and a small triangle on the center of the top lip pointing toward the thin line. Paint just the center of the bottom lip. 7. On the muzzle under the nose, paint three small dots on each side. Do this by pushing your loaded brush straight onto the skin, using more or less pressure to create differently sized dots. 8. Outline the white chin using the zigzag motion, making sure both sides meet at the bottom. 9. Paint two teardrops coming from the corners of the mouth and pointing downward. Do this by laying your loaded brush flat on the skin with the tip of the paintbrush touching the corners of the mouth.

CLOWN: A. 1. Paint a circular shape around the eyes. You can curve the outline inward and then back out if you’d like. 2. Gently sponge over the eye, making sure to reach the creases. 3. Fill in the rest of the shape. 4. Draw a small semicircle from one corner of the lip to the other. (This will save this space for when you will paint it red.) B. 1. Draw a large semicircle, extending from both sides of the nose until under the mouth. You will need room to outline it in red so make sure the semicircle isn’t too big. 2. Sponge in the large semicircle, adding layers until it is very opaque. Be sure to leave out the small space under the mouth for the red paint. You can always clean it away with a baby wipe in case of mistakes. C. 1. Paint a small red circle on the nose. Making the circle too large may cause you to slip off the tip of the nose. 2. Fill in the small semicircle under the bottom lip. 3. Doing one side at a time, place your brush at the upper corner of the small semicircle. The tip of the brush should be touching the corner of the lips, and the rest of the brush should be tilted upward on a slant to create a small teardrop-shaped line. 4. Outline the big semicircle. D. 1. Outline the circular shape on top of the eyes, adding swirls to the ends. Add a thin curved line on the nose to create a highlight. 2. Draw a wavy line under each eye, curling under the ends. 3. Paint three small dots under each eye in different sizes. Do this by pushing your loaded brush straight onto the skin, using more or less pressure to create differently sized dots.

MINNIE MOUSE: A. 1. Between the two eyebrows on the forehead, paint a circle with two triangles coming out of it. The result should look like a bow. 2. Fill in the bow. B. 1. Draw a circle on each side of the bow for ears. Draw a small triangular shape coming out from under the bow, and dip its point onto the nose. 2. Fill in the shapes. C. 1. Finish the shape of your mask by drawing a small arc, starting from under the “ears” and going until right under the eye. Connect the arcs to the black triangle on the top of the nose and fill in the empty spaces. 2. Draw three lines, curved upward, coming out of each end of the small arcs. 3. Draw a small circle on the tip of the nose and fill in. The smaller the circle, the neater it will be. 4. Ask you model to smile, and paint a small line coming out of each corner of the mouth. Curve the line upward at the angle of your model’s smile. Add a small line on top of each curved line. D. 1. Load your brush with a lot of moist paint. Place lots of small polka dots all over the bow. To paint the polka dots, hold your brush straight and gently push the brush onto the skin. 2. For highlighting, paint small curved lines on the outer side of each ear, two small flicks on both sides of the nose and another two under the bow. 3. To create dimension for the bow, twist your brush into the paint to create a fine tip. Then outline the shape of the bow and add a thicker line on top of each triangle. Add two lines flicking out from the inner corners of each triangle. Then add a small curve in the circle. 4. Paint the lips carefully. For neater results, try using a Q-tip.

PRINCESS: A. 1. Paint one triangle in the middle of the forehead, and add a smaller one on each side. The outer corners of the smaller triangles should reach toward the ear. The triangles should be short enough to leave space on top for the diamonds. 2. Draw an upside-down triangular shape between the eyebrows, pointing down the nose. Draw a band on each side of this triangle. 3. Fill in any empty spaces. 4. Load your sponge with a touch of paint and rub onto the back of your hand until the paint is very sheer. Sponge the face from under the crown until under the nose. B. 1. (Green/blue eyeshadow) (You can use face paint instead of eyeshadow. If you choose to do so, rub the paint on the back of your hand first, as you did with the pink paint, to make sure it is very sheer.) Ask the model to close their eyes softly. Apply the eyeshadow over the eyes, continuing off the eyelids to create a light swirl on the outer side of each eye. C. 1. Paint diamonds on each point of the crown. The middle one can be larger for a nice effect. 2. Paint the lips. D. 1. Outline the crown. 2. Add a swirly design in each triangle of the crown. 3. Paint thin L-shaped designs in the corner of each diamond to create highlights.

MISHLOACH MANOS THAT MAKE THE GRADE SENDING MISHLOACH MANOS to your child’s teacher is a way to show your appreciation, but if your child has numerous teachers, or if you have numerous children, it can be both costly and time-consuming on one of the busiest days on the Jewish calendar. The Monsey View polled both parents and teachers about their preferences for giving and receiving mishloach manos, respectively. Their names have been changed in keeping with the Purim incognito spirit! “When my own kids were little, it was not taken for granted that kids would bring mishloach manos to every teacher,” says Malka. “We walked or drove to deliver them to those who lived close enough, and I often sent them to school when we couldn’t go on Purim. As a grandparent, I find my kids in Lakewood are so busy with running to every teacher and rebbi, to the point where it becomes difficult to do anything else. Yes, going to the
teacher is important, but I do feel it is out of hand when the teacher trumps grandparents.” To beat the Purim rush, Hinda says, “I give mishloach manos to all teachers usually before Purim. I like to give a useful gift along with it — such as a salad bowl or CD — and, of course, a meaningful note.” Miriam concurs with Hinda. “I try to give mishloach manos to all the main teachers before Purim. We are not
meant to be in the car all day on Purim. If there is an organized effort, I join and am very thankful.” Mishloach Manos with Class… or Without Every year, the parents in Devorah’s children’s classes arrange mishloach manos-giving differently. “We either pitch in for a collective one or we give it to the teachers separately. But I find it rather awkward to give one big one from the class because come Purim, my kids are dying to go to their teachers to show off their costumes, and it’s daft to come empty-handed. We’ve already spent money on their mishloach manos, so to go and buy just another box of chocolates for each teacher is a bit costly. I don’t know how to avoid that.” According to Rochel, chocolates

are a good idea. “A nice, small box of chocolates and a check is what I give. They don’t need more junk!” Arranging for a group mishloach manos does not always work, however. As in Chaviva’s case. “My daughter is autistic and is in a high school special ed class. We tried to arrange a mishloach manos from the whole class but were not successful, so I pitched in with one other mother. We also give the special ed principal a small one. These women give their hearts and souls to our girls and get paid very little. As I always tell them, nothing in this world can repay our tremendous debt to them; this is a small token of our great appreciation.” Dassi says, “If I’m giving the mishloach manos myself, I’ll generally give it only to the main teacher, the assistant and principals. When someone is kind enough to organize a class mishloach manos, I’m happy to join in. We generally give it before Purim unless a teacher lives conveniently close by or a rebbi arranges a specific time for the boys to come.” As Perel Grossman (her real name!) sums up the teacher mishloach manos experience, “We spend the entire day driving all over Monsey and its environs, leaving lots of cleverly put-together, but currently melting or spoiling, mishloach manos at various doors. This is because almost every rebbi and teacher selects the exact same 45-minute time slot for their students to visit. And each of these educators lives at the farthest limits of Greater Monsey, in opposite directions of one another. So the minhag is to miss each of the teachers except for the one your kid really doesn’t like and is going to only because you are forcing him/her to. He/she cries about this at the time and reminds you years later that he/she is still traumatized by the experience.”

Mishloach Manos Lessons from the Teachers Racheli, a preschool teacher, shares, “My school sends home the teachers’ addresses, noting that no parent should feel pressured to show up on Purim, and teachers bring mishloach manos to school after Purim for those who weren’t able to come. My co-teacher and I split the costs for our class’s mishloach manos and give it out before Purim so parents don’t feel obligated to come on such a busy day. Whoever ends up coming to my house receives a small prize or nosh, and of course, loads of attention for their costumes and a photo with their teacher!” Ahuva, a high school teacher, remarks, “One of the schools I teach in splits the girls into groups; each group buys a gift for a different teacher. They may not spend more than a collective $50. The other schools I teach in give each teacher a gift — like a Kosher Lamp or a cookbook — and we get nothing from the students.” Sandy, a secular history high school teacher, says, “It means a tremendous amount if a student makes the effort to bring something, either to school or on Purim, though it is extremely rare. Our PTA has finally worked out what we all think is the perfect sys-

Devorah, who appreciates her students giving her their mishloach manos before Purim, says, “My postPurim song as an elementary teacher went something like this: ‘How-am-I-ever-gonnaget-rid-of-all-these-chocolatebars-in-time-for-Pesach?’” Sara Leah adds, “Many people don’t realize that there’s nothing like a nice card or letter to make you feel good! I always enjoy the more detailed compliments, and especially the ones that the students write themselves!” Sima, a high school teacher, wishes she would get a nice card or letter. “I put my heart and soul into each student, and I really and truly love each and every one. I daven for all of my students — past and present — every day, and keep in touch with a lot of them. However, I have never received even one mishloach manos package. I don’t need more wafers, chocolate bars or sparkling grape juice — but I wouldn’t mind the acknowledgment and appreciation. I’m trying to mold, direct and guide these teenagers. I believe in them and sincerely care. I even lose sleep over them. Can’t I get a thank you from at least some of my 150 students?” Shani, who receives multiple mishloach manos packages, concludes, “For me, schlepping home all the mishloach manos I get in school is harder than getting it at home, and I do enjoy having the kids come to me on Purim, as well. Right now, as someone who is single and without kids of my own yet, it gives me simchas Purim when they come over. Purim would be pretty empty without them!”

BY: T. GESTETNER REB NISSEN ZUCKERMAN LIVED IN THE SMALL city of Yergen, not far from Pressburg. As the proprietor of a large glass factory, he led a content, prosperous life. Still, his joy was incomplete for he had yet to be blessed with the gift of children. One fine winter day, his greatest dream was finally fulfilled! After many years of longing and tears, his wife gave birth to a baby boy. Elated, he locked the doors of his factory so he could dedicate the entire month leading up to the pidyon haben to Torah and tefillah in gratitude to Hashem for His kindness. He included his workers in his joyous vacation and generously paid them for the complete month. The bris took place on a significant date: Purim morning. Reb Nissen took his baby to nearby Pressburg so that his venerated rosh yeshivah, the Chasam Sofer, could be the mohel. The Chasam Sofer was mohel to many children. Nonetheless, at this bris, the Chasam Sofer appeared especially happy. The baby was aptly named Baruch Mordechai. When the holy tzaddik made the brachos after the milah, he stood still, his eyes closed tightly in devotion. He dipped his finger in the becher of wine and put some on the lips of the newborn. As he bent over the baby, the Chasam Sofer said softly, “Nichnas yayin, yatza sod.” When wine enters, secrets come out. Talmidim wondered what was different about this bris, the greater display of simcha, more obvious devotion, the strange whisper to the little baby… but no one gathered the courage to ask. LITTLE BARUCH MORDECHAI was a delightful child. He possessed a charming personality and matured beautifully. Soon he began learning in cheder. He picked up on alef-beis and reading skills with ease. Listening to him recite brachos and daven, each word uttered clearly and with fervor, brought his parents untold joy. Soon Baruch Mordechai began to learn Chumash. He came home from cheder and did not tire from reviewing and reviewing the pesukim, softly, sweetly, for hours on end. His face was aglow with excitement and pleasure.

A WHILE LATER, terrible misfortune struck. Reb Nissen’s entire glass factory burned down! The family was left with nothing, no money and no food. At this time, the Chasam Sofer had already passed away, and his son, the Ksav Sofer, was rav in Pressburg.

The first odd signs, however, appeared when his rebbi gave him his first written test on Mishnayos. Though Baruch Mordechai applied himself to his studying and reviewed the material countless times, he did very poorly. This continued throughout his schooling years. In cheder, and at home, he seemed very involved in the learning. He was the greatest masmid in his class. Still, on every test, both oral and written, his marks were far below average. His rebbeim were puzzled. Perhaps he had a poor memory? Or maybe a weak grasp? They regarded him with pity, this young boy who exerted such efforts in his learning, yet failed to succeed. Baruch Mordechai davened daily with passion, hot tears rolling down his face. His friends assumed he was pleading for the gift of intellectual capacity. Soon after his bar mitzvah, Reb Nissen sent his son to learn, as he had, in the yeshivah of the Chasam Sofer in Pressburg. There too, Baruch Mordechai was soon known as a remarkable masmid. He learned day and night. Yet he was always quiet, and he appeared to know nothing. When others attempted to talk with him in learning, he would shrug impassively. One Tzom Gedalya, when Baruch Mordechai was fifteen, he awoke to a very stormy morning. Torrential rains had caused flooding on the streets of Pressburg, but undeterred, Baruch Mordechai set out to the beis midrash. On the way, he noticed his rosh yeshivah, the holy Chasam Sofer, plodding through the stream-like street, water nearly reaching his knees. A tall, strong boy, Baruch Mordechai ran over as quickly as he could, lifted the Rebbe onto his shoulders and walked him to yeshivah. Bochurim who saw this looked on in wonder, their respect for their unusual peer escalating. Once in yeshivah, the Chasam Sofer asked, “With what can I bentch you, my loyal talmid?” “Rebbe, bless me I should be saved from the middah of gaavah.” The boys standing around were dumbfounded. A blessing for success in his learning would have seemed more appropriate. What kind of arrogance could a boy who could not learn be faced with anyway? One day, Baruch Mordechai was learning Maseches Bava Metzia when he went out for a few minutes. Teasingly, a boy switched his volume for a Maseches Sukkah. He was sure Baruch Mordechai would not even realize. Though he murmured over his sefer all day, he didn’t seem to understand anything. Sure enough, Baruch Mordechai returned, sat down at his place and resumed his mumbling over the open Gemara. The boy smirked — a true am ha’aretz indeed!

Baruch Mordechai told him of the fire and ensuing hunger and asked for a bracha. The Ksav Sofer listened, thought for a couple of moments and suggested, “Go to Yerushalayim. Perhaps you will have more success there. You will find your zivug there.” Soon Baruch Mordechai had made the necessary arrangements and was on his way. Before leaving, he went over to the Mashgiach, Reb Shraga Feldheim, for a letter of recommendation so he would have a chance at acceptance in a yeshivah in Yerushalayim. “I affirm that this bochur learned in our yeshivah all the years. He is a yarei Shamayim who davens with kavanah. His desire to learn is great,” penned the Mashgiach. After a long journey by sea, Baruch Mordechai finally arrived in Eretz Yisroel. It was in the dark of night when he first set his eyes on the holy city of Yerushalayim. He walked through the narrow streets, with nowhere to rest from his exhausting trip. Finally he noticed a light from a window and knocked tentatively. The owner opened and welcomed the poor boy inside. Little did Baruch Mordechai know just how fortunate he was to have found this home! It was the home of none other than Reb Yeshaya Bardaki, the Rav of Yerushalayim. From Baruch Mordechai’s brachos and behavior, it was clear to the Rav that this was an exceptional bochur. Yet, when he tried to engage him in a Torah discussion, the boy was blank. Reb Yeshaya had compassion on this devout am ha’aretz and invited him to live in his home. AFTER A WHILE, Baruch Mordechai finally became engaged to an orphaned girl. Reb Yeshaya Bardaki helped marry

him off, just as he had cared for him completely since his arrival. Soon after the wedding, Baruch Mordechai decided to become a water carrier. Every day, after davening vasikin, he would make his rounds among the Yidden of Batei Machseh, encumbered by two buckets of water over his shoulders. Before long, he was beloved among his clients. He did his job unfailingly, quietly, with a smile. On every Erev Rosh Chodesh, he would deliver water free of charge. This, he said, was in case he had inadvertently spilled some water along the way during that month when he was being paid for full buckets. For three hours every morning, Baruch Mordechai lugged the buckets. The rest of the day, he would sit in Rav Yeshaya’s beis midrash. He sat in front of whichever random sefer he found and mumbled to himself. While learning one day, a strong wind blew in from the window. Baruch Mordechai stood up to close the window, tumbling his shtender in the process. Some children helped him set it straight again, but when they replaced the sefer on it, they positioned it upside-down. Baruch Mordechai sat down and continued to murmur from the upturned sefer. BARUCH MORDECHAI viewed his work as holy. He animatedly told his wife and daughter, “I heard that bringing water for talmidei chachamim is likened to the nisuch hamayim on the Mizbe’ach!” He was constantly thanking Hashem for enabling him to hold such a lofty position, which he dutifully carried out for forty years. Whenever he heard of the arrival of a rav or talmid chacham in Yerushalayim, he quickly offered his services. His list of patrons included many a special personality. When he heard that the

great gaon and tzaddik, the Rav of Brisk, Rav Yehoshua Leib Diskin, was due to settle in the Holy City, he made it his business to attend the welcoming ceremony. Baruch Mordechai entered the home of the Brisker Gaon. He saw the rebbetzin and asked if he could be honored with the privilege of bringing water to the Rav. The rebbetzin was enthusiastic, but said she couldn’t confirm until she got her husband’s approval. That night, Baruch Mordechai returned, and the rebbetzin told the Rav of the water carrier’s offer. Rav Yehoshua Leib looked intensely at Baruch Mordechai, thought for a moment and said emphatically, “No! I’m sorry, but this Yid won’t haul water for us.” Baruch Mordechai apologized for disturbing the Rav and ran home. Brokenhearted, he shared what had happened with his wife. “Who knows what the tzaddik saw when he looked at me? I must have too many sins… I am not worthy of serving the great tzaddik.” Baruch Mordechai’s wife empathized deeply with her husband. She, too, was truly disturbed. A few days later, she met the rebbetzin. Utilizing the opportunity, she introduced herself and asked, “Why did the Rav refuse my husband? Is he less righteous than any other water carrier? PURIM ARRIVED, and Baruch Mordechai went to the home of Rav Shneur Zalman of Lublin, the Baal Toras Chesed. There, a large crowd of the finest scholars and pious men of Yerushalayim were gathered, eager to bask in the holy, uplifting atmosphere. Rav Shneur Zalman delivered a sharp pilpul, in typical style of Polish geonim, his face aglow. All present drank wine and pressed forward to say l’chaim to the Rav and receive his blessings. Baruch Mordechai, who usually shied away from public settings, pushed among the crowd, too. When he reached the Rav, Baruch Mordechai announced in a voice louder than anyone had previously heard, “Today, seventy years ago, I entered in the bris of Avraham.” Everyone smiled. Apparently, Baruch Mordechai had drank more than he was accustomed to. The only one who remained still was the Rav. “If so,” he said, “you deserve another glass of wine.” Baruch Mordechai obliged. Soon he was on the table, dancing with all his strength. The distinguished guests felt it inappropriate and tried telling the water carrier to leave. But the Rav lifted his eyes and reprimanded Baruch Mordechai, “Today is a holy day! Instead of dancing, share some meaningful words with us!” It was quiet in the room. What did the Rav expect from the simpleton? But Baruch Mordechai replied. “What topic should I discuss?” “Talk about Purim,” the Rav said. To everyone’s astonishment, the water carrier opened his mouth and began to rattle off, word for word, the mishnah of Maseches Megillah. He continued, repeating verbatim Rashi, Tosafos, and questions and answers of Rishonim and Acharonim, and expounded upon them with utter clarity. The talmidei chachamim of Yerushalayim listened openmouthed as pearls of wisdom and depth of knowledge spewed forth from the simple water carrier. Baruch Mordechai went on to share his own brilliant explanations. Two hours of uninterrupted speaking passed. Baruch Mordechai sat down, lowered his head and fell into a deep sleep. The news spread like wildfire throughout Yerushalayim. The simple water carrier was no simple man! He was an accomplished scholar who had merely masqueraded as an am ha’aretz for a full seventy years! Interestingly, the numerical value of both “yayin” (wine) and “sod” (secret) is seventy. Indeed, the wine entered and the secret was revealed. “Nichnas yayin yatza sod.” The Yid who had faithfully carried water for his fellow brothers for more than forty years now took on the task of inundating the Yidden of Yerushalayim with his overflowing wellsprings of Torah.

Part IV As we wrap up our series on some of the fundamentals of the tax reform, it is important to note that although the intention of the new law was simplification (which may hold true for certain taxpayers), many taxpayers will have more nuances and rules to deal with than previously. Some of these are still being studied by tax professionals and will become clearer over the next few months. In the meantime, it is advisable to have a professional take a look at your situation to ensure you are properly positioned and informed going forward. We will complete our analysis with answering select questions submitted by our readers. Q: I am in the real estate industry and very often defer tax on property sales via a 1031 exchange. I’ve heard that this was slightly modified. Can you elaborate? A: Yes, you can continue to defer taxable gains under Sec-
tion 1031 for “real property,” such as land and buildings. However, the new law suspends its applicability to “personal tangible property.” Investors looking to complete a 1031 transaction should work with a qualified intermediary and a competent tax professional to ensure the assets involved in the exchange are in line with the definition of “real property” and that various other requirements are being met. Q: During the January snowstorm that brought heavy winds to our area, my home sustained significant roof and siding damage, and I had to pay for the repairs largely out pocket (due to a high deductible). Can we still deduct that under the new law? A: Under the old law, taxpayers were permitted to deduct
qualified casualty losses that exceeded 10 percent of their adjusted gross income. The new law limits this deduction to presidentially declared disaster areas. As this was not declared as such, you wouldn’t be able to deduct this on your 2018 tax return. Q: What is changing with the Affordable Care Act penalty?

Will there still be a penalty for not having insurance? A: The Affordable Care Act, passed in 2010, enacted a pen-
alty for certain taxpayers who did not have minimum essential health coverage for part of the year. Over the years, this was subject to intense scrutiny by multiple courts including the United States Supreme Court, which ultimately affirmed its constitutionality. The new law repeals the penalty in its entirety, starting in tax year 2019. However, as a side note, people should be aware that since there will be health consumers leaving the market due to the removal of the penalty, substantial premium increases may be on the horizon. There is a lot of talk in Congress on how to best mitigate these disruptions, so expect additional action in this area over the coming year. Q: We are thinking of selling our home and have heard that there may have been some changes in this area. Is that true? A: Section 121 allows married taxpayers to exclude up to
$500,000 of capital gains on the sale of a principal residence. One of the requirements to qualify for the exclusion is that the taxpayer must have resided in that residence for two out of the five years preceding the sale. Although there was talk in preliminary bills on increasing the residing requirement, this did not make it into the
signed version, and Section 121 remains unchanged. Q: My company owns a foreign entity that has accumulated profits over the years. We never repatriated that money back to the United States and were not subject to tax under the Subpart F regime. I’ve heard that a lot has changed and that we should be seeking professional counsel. Can you advise? A: Excellent question. To begin, this is a very compli-
cated situation, and you should be seeking professional expertise. We will outline only the basics, as the details are numerous, complex and beyond the scope of this article. Up until now, the United States has taxed its citizens and corporations on their worldwide income, and many corporations have set up foreign entities over the years to defer U.S. taxation. The new law switches the corporate tax code from a worldwide system to a territorial system of taxation, so U.S. corporations will only be taxed on income sourced in the United States. As part of the new law and to incentivize the repatriation of cash to the United States, the government instituted a one-time “deemed” repatriation tax. The rate of this tax is either 15.5 percent for cash holdings or 8 percent for illiquid assets, such as equipment and machinery held by the foreign entity. Taxpayers may have the ability to pay this tax over an eight-year period through an election with the IRS. This is an extremely complicated and time-sensitive issue. Anyone with foreign entity holdings, which may be subject to these new rules, should seek professional advice quickly as the time to make certain elections will soon expire. FINAL THOUGHTS:
The new law is complicated and far-reaching, as a wide variety of tax areas were modified and new concepts introduced. Did you know… Mordechai was the first individual to be called “( ”יהודיJew). Prior to that, Jews as a whole were referred to as “( ”ישראליםIsraelites) or “”עברים (Hebrews). Though others had been called “ ”יהודיearlier, they had been referred to as such because of their shevet – Yehudah. However, Mordechai was identified as a Jew from the shevet of Binyamin, demonstrating that the name “ ”יהודיthen became disassociated from Shevet Yehudah and came to refer to all the people of our nation as “( ”יהודיםJews). Thus, in the Megillah, the Jewish nation was for the first time referred to as “יהודים,” regardless of descent. Mordechai, who refused to bow to Haman, was a descendant of Binyamin, the only one of Yaakov’s sons who didn’t bow to Haman’s ancestor Esav. If Haman announced his evil plans a full year in advance, wouldn’t that give the Jewish people ample time to escape or prepare for attack? The Vilna Gaon explains that Haman made two decrees: one to annihilate the Jewish nation, and the second that everyone should ready themselves and prepare for something special on the 13th of Adar. The first decree — that of annihilating the Jews — was kept secret, however, to prevent the Jews from fleeing or devising their resistance. Why did Haman describe the Jewish nation as “עם אחד מפזר ומפרד בין ( ”העמיםA people scattered and separate among the people)? Haman wished to highlight their vulnerability; a disunited nation is a vulnerable nation. The Jewish response was “( ”לך כנוס את כל היהודיםGo, assemble all the Jews) — the unity of our nation being the antidote to Haman’s slander. In this theme, the Purim minhagim are aimed at solidarity — we cannot celebrate Purim without one another. Why does the Megillah use the term ( מתנות לאביוניםgifts), and not the general term ( צדקהcharity)? While charity implies money given to the poor out of pity, gifts, on the other hand, are exchanged between peers as an expression of gratitude or friendship. The Lubavitcher Rebbe explains that by using the word “gifts,” the Megillah reveals to us that charity is not a one-way action. Indeed, the giver benefits more than the taker.

The Mystery of the Hamantasch Ask any kid what hamantaschen represents, and chances are they’ll say, “Haman’s triangular hat.” But there are no definitive sources for that. So what’s the real reason? Or rather, some of them? The word “hamantasch” is believed to have originated in Yiddish as “mohn-taschen,” or literally, “poppy-seed pockets.” Due to its association with Purim, these treats later became known as hamantaschen. But why specifically poppy seeds? Well, poppy seeds aren’t just another flavor on the shelf. Poppy seeds, or “poppy pockets” as some call these pastries, are customarily eaten on Purim in fulfillment of a minhag to eat seeds on Purim. Why seeds? The Gemara says that Esther subsisted on seeds for nourishment in order to keep kosher in the palace. In commemoration of this, the minhag developed to eat seeds on Purim. Another fairly plausible theory, also according to this etymology, is that the term is in reference to Haman’s stuffed pockets, i.e., the vast treasures he offered Achashverosh in return for annihilating the Jews. The innumerable poppy seeds allude to the immeasurable sums that Haman offered to the king. Hamantaschen are also referred to as “ — ”אזני המןliterally, “Haman ears.” Legend has it that in medieval times, the ears of a criminal would be severed before his hanging. Thus, “ ”אזני המןare reminiscent of Haman’s fate. Another noteworthy allusion is that the sweet treat is wrapped inside, just as Hashem’s providential Hand was hidden within events. Why three corners on a hamantasch? These might allude to the three-way struggle between Achashverosh, Haman and Esther, or to the three Avos in whose merit we were saved. The word “ ”תשmeans “weaken.” Thus, the three-cornered pastry was named Haman-tasch, because “Haman was weakened” by our three Avos. Another remarkable suggestion is that Mordechai tried appealing to the Jews of Achashverosh’s empire to do teshuvah by sending out letters forewarning them of the dire situation. But since sending the letters openly would draw too much attention to his efforts, he sent them covertly, hidden inside pastries!
