‫חג‬ ‫כשר‬ ‫ושמח‬

It’s no piece of cake. Although planning your Pesach desserts is anything but simple, our Dutch-sourced, Dutch-process cocoa powder helps ensure baking your truffle, torte or tiramisu will be more cakewalk than cumbersome. Intensely scrutinized by our baalei machshir, intensely alkalized to produce a rich flavor and lusciously dark shade,

Gefen Premium Cocoa takes the cake.

RE: COUPON CONUNDRUM (ISSUE 140) I recently heard a story repeated by Rabbi Pesach Krohn on Chazak that illustrates the point I want to bring across in regard to the back and forth about coupons for bnei Torah. Reb Shlomo Zalmen Auerbech would distribute a lot tzedakah for needy families before Pesach. His nephew, who helped him distribute the envelopes, once arrived at one home and watched the recipient taking out the contents. In addition to the shekel amount therein, enclosed were tickets for Chol Hamoed rides. When he approached his uncle for an explanation, Reb Shlomo Zalmen said that while Chol Hamoed outings may not be a necessity, why don’t these kids deserve to enjoy the rides just like their neighbors? Is tzedakah only about providing one with the bare necessities? I want to clarify that when people like myself, who run these coupon programs, set up the system, it was not necessarily only to provide families with their basic, bare necessities. Before yom tov is a time when we want the kids of chashuve bnei Torah to have just what their neighbors have, be it beautiful hair accessories or up-to-date Shabbos shoes. The sponsors of this program are so happy to contribute to this worthy cause, and they want these chashuvah wives who are supporting their husbands in learning to buy special things l’kavod yom tov, things they never would buy all year round. The stores, too, contribute so graciously, thrilled to be part in supporting these pillars who are holding up our community with their Torah. (There was one store owner who didn’t want to participate at first, saying that these wives never shop at her store around the year, so why should she give them the discount? I explained that precisely because

they don’t shop around the year is the reason we want to give them the opportunity to do so before yom tov, because they simply can’t afford their prices any other time.) Yes, dear wives, this is your time to buy what you don’t fargin for yourself all year round. We want you to enjoy the coupons and enjoy the freedom of buying things you usually would not be able to. This is just a letter to help clarify the difference between a kollel family and a family in financial trouble. I’m sorry for the woman whose husband is working and yet still has a hard time clothing her family; may she be blessed with more hatzlacha. But that has nothing to do with our precious kollel families. Kollel families are the elite of our society. They are the Leviyim who take on the avodah that we all need in order to flourish. Just like in the times of the Beis Hamikdash, when we brought our bekurim (the choicest of our fruits) to the Kohanim doing

the avodah, we should give gifts to those who have given their lives to the service of Hashem. Giving coupons should not cause embarrassment to those who receive them. It should bring them pride! This is not food stamps. This is not kimcha d’Pischa. This is extra yom tov support for the families who provide a tremendous service for us. It should be given with respect and gratitude, because that is what will give these families the energy they need to continue their holy work and not be caught in the materialistic race that is going on. Yes, they may not be able to get to the store without the coupons, but they are still not a charity case Remember, one who doesn’t acknowledge the benefit they receive from Torah scholars is considered an apikorus. Look into your hearts and make sure not to say anything that may cause damage to our special (often needy) kollel families. And to all those special people out there who have given their all to help the kollel families, thank you! You are building Torah by helping the Torah families do their holy work! You will not go unrewarded! Standing up for Kavod HaTorah

In response to the letters about coupons for kollel leit and rabbeim, I could write that I have also been on the receiving end of coupons, though now I am not, even though my financial situation is arguably more challenging than back then. I could also expand on the fact that I used those coupons to buy essentials I otherwise couldn’t afford and items that did not meet the definition of need. But I’m not going to. Instead, I’d like to ask a question unaddressed in the

letters that I’ve seen so far. Why in the world are we looking with jealousy at what our neighbors have? Where is our emunah and bitachon? When I go into a store and see someone in front of me paying with a coupon when I’ll be paying full price, I openly admit that I feel a pang of envy. But I know that it’s wrong and that I have to be mechazek myself that Hashem is running the world and giving me exactly what I need; no other person has the ability to take that away from me. Please, I beg of you: Let’s stop with this petty jealousy, and in this zechus, be zoche to the geulah this Pesach. Name Withheld

RE: TURNING AN EYESORE INTO AN ATTRACTION (ISSUE 141) I have some comments in response to “Turning an Eyesore into an Attraction,” where the letter writer speaks out against the debris at Lake Suzanne. I understand the author’s valid concern about the health and safety of this situation, but blaming the people who visit the lake is not the key. Before anything, I must mention that unless he or she is a professional sanitation worker, there really is no need for them to be doing such work. I hope the author utilizes proper protection when cleaning up the lake grounds. There is a great risk of contracting infections from the bacteria-laden grounds littered with garbage and waterfowl byproducts, unless one is properly dressed to prevent this. I think it is best left for professionals, as I would not want a community member to be in such a vulnerable position! Additionally, the garbage problem is probably due to the town not cleaning it well enough. The streets are cleaned periodically by street cleaning trucks, the snow is removed by snow plows, etc. Our tax money should definitely be enough to cover lake maintenance as well. I don’t think it is solely the community members’ responsibility to keep the area clean. There are also not enough garbage cans for people to dispose of their trash. I actually think the problem boils down to the presence of the waterfowl. If the geese would not be using the lake as their habitat, people would not feed the geese. Nobody would bring their leftover bread, and the grounds would be so much cleaner. There would also be no more goose roadkill on Suzanne Drive every week. If the town got rid of the geese, there would be so much less mess. How beautiful the lake would be if this were to become a reality! R.N.

DOING WHAT’S RIGHT Although I’m not your typical magazine letter writer, I want to slice a little bit of time out of this busy Erev Pesach week to thank The Monsey View for doing what’s right. We, as Viznitz chassidim, have it so ingrained in us

A MESSAGE FROM THE TRENCHES About a year ago, I sent in a letter to The Monsey View about the dangers of eating disorders lurking around in the Jewish world. I am fifteen now, baruch Hashem alive and well, and at the end of treatment. I want to bring up the subject again, because I think people don’t understand what an eating disorder is. There are a few types of eating disorders; the most common ones are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating. People with anorexia constantly stress about their body image. They think of themselves as obese, even though they are not. They are intensely focused on their food intake and exercise abnormally. Some people with anorexia even purge after they eat minimal amounts of food, which makes the eating disorder even more dangerous. Bulimia is when someone eats an enormous amount of food and then purges it to prevent themselves from gaining weight. A person with bulimia constantly diets and may do excessive exercise to compensate for what they ate. People with binge eating disorders eat large amounts of food, but do not purge. They frequently diet, becoming obsessed over body image, and their weight fluctuates up and down. All these types of eating disorders cited above are life-threatening. Without proper help, people can die from them. This is a message to anyone who is struggling with an eating disorder: It doesn’t matter how old you are; what matters is seeking help by a professional. It will be hard at first, but realize that an eating disorder can be conquered. No one wants to be a slave to a “voice” telling them they can’t eat freely. Its nearly Pesach, and there is a lot of eating at the Seder, and I am scared for it. But take a deep breath and do the best you can. Do it for yourself, for your family, and do it for your life. There is an organization called Relief that will help you find a therapist in your area. Chag kasher v’sameach. Anonymous

A WORD OF CAUTION It has come to my attention that many mothers were made “aware” that baby formula is “junk,” since the first ingredient is 54 percent corn syrup solids. So they avoid giving formula by all means, to the extent that their baby cries from hunger. They substitute proper nutrition with goat’s milk, almond milk or chicken soup. I think it’s important to point out that those referenced substitutes are good as a drink and do not

As the owner of a glass company, I see my share of broken refrigerator shelves this time of year. We have replaced hundreds of shelves over the years, and while we love and appreciate your business, I’m sure you will agree that we would like to earn it in other ways. I would like to share with you the two main reasons that shelves break and how to avoid the cost and aggravation of getting them replaced. Most refrigerator shelves are made of tempered glass, which is stronger and more resistant to cracking. It is not crack-proof, though, and when it does break, it will break in hundreds of little shards. Also, while the trays can handle a lot of abuse, the corners are particularly sensitive. One little tap in the corners will cause the tray to shatter. It is important to spread out a large towel in the bathtub or sink or in whatever area you will be washing your refrigerator parts so none of the points will be in contact with a hard surface. One other thing that is important to understand is that glass expands and contracts with temperature. This means that if you place an extremely cold or frozen tray into the sink and begin to clean it with boiling water, the

sudden and rapid expansion of the glass will cause it to shatter. The shelves should be washed with cold or lukewarm water and temperature should be increased gradually. Never subject any glass to extreme temperature changes. Hopefully, with these two tips in mind, your refrigerator shelves will last a long time. Leon Sabel

BRINGING LIGHT TO IMPORTANT MATTERS First, I’d love to compliment you on the great Pesach recipes you featured, which even those of us who use nothing processed on Pesach could use for variety. Last week you also had a beautiful Seder table featured, but two things were out of sync. First of all, I found it surprising that a Seder with twelve participants has only two lit candles. Second, I don’t think votive candles belong on a Seder table. They could be dangerous, as Seder participants concentrating on the mitzvos of the day could easily be distracted and chalilah burn themselves or have a napkin or matzah tash catch fire. Also, while I am not a rav or pretending to pasken, I recall hearing that although one is mechuyav to light the customary licht l’kavod yom tov, one should not light candles “just because.” May we all have a kosheren, freilichen Pesach. Shira Weiss

MINIMAL INGREDIENTS, MAXIMAL GRATITUDE I read your Pesach recipes every week, and I find it unbelievable that I am able to use almost all of them! I use the absolute minimum on Pesach, and I’m so happy and grateful that I can try new recipes. Thank you very much, and keep up your great work. A Happy Balebusta

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:

EDITION CHAPTER 31

By: Basya Kovacs

OVER THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS, two of my clients expressed similar thoughts that stayed with me long after their sessions were over. I mulled their comments over for several days, realizing that they expressed what so many of my clients feel all the time. The first woman, let’s call her Miriam, has been a client for over two years. Petite and in her early 50s, Miriam successfully and quite easily lost over 25 pounds, but she struggles mightily, day after day, to keep the weight off. The constant battle exhausts and frustrates her. At her most recent weigh-in, Miriam cried to me, “Am I really going to always have to be that crazy woman who brings my muffins and kugels wherever I go? Do I really have to live this way forever?!” The second client, a post-seminary graduate, expressed a similar sentiment. This girl, let’s call her Sarah, lost weight with a different nutritionist, who had put her on a very strictly regimented diet that cut out all snacks, sweets, treats, meats and fun food. Of course, this type of plan is unsustainable, and her weight began to creep back on. Sarah came to Nutrition by Tanya in order to maintain her weight loss while reintroducing all the foods she’d deprived herself of for many months. Session after session, burned out from her previous diet, Sarah kept telling me, “I just want to do whatever I want and be normal!” Both of these clients, and many more, are just yearning to be free from the burden of “dieting.” So many of us are. In fact, there is a whole movement toward intuitive eating, which basically professes to just eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full, with no dieting, structuring or planning. If only

it were that simple. If only we could be “free” and “normal”! Unfortunately, our intuition is clouded by a host of factors including, but not limited to: 1. The abundance of foods in every grocery, pantry and refrigerator, baruch Hashem. 2. Elaborate simchos that try to outdo the other with both food and presentation. 3. Advertising in magazines and media, blogs and newspapers, enticing us to eat. 4. An entire foodie culture encouraging us to eat more, focus more on food, eat creatively and eat constantly. 5. Chemically engineered food that is designed to keep us coming back for more. For example, high fructose corn syrup, MSG and hydrogenated fats are added intentionally to make food as addictive as possible. With all these factors at play, intuitive eating is all but impossible. Doing whatever we want sounds lovely until we realize that our wants and desires are swayed and manipulated by the forces at play as described above, and are not to be trusted. The only way to enjoy all the different foods and all of life’s occasions and simchos is to do so within a structure and a framework,

Is eating to your heart’s content and then being filled with guilt and regret true freedom?

also known as a “diet.” The desire for freedom seems timely, Pesach being the yom tov of freedom. It is interesting that our “freedom” coincides with being given the Torah — a full guidebook of rules and restrictions that teaches us how to best live our lives! Freedom, then, can’t mean doing whatever we want when we want — because what we want is subject to change on a whim! As it says in Pirkei Avos, if we were free to do what we wanted, society would deteriorate, and we would literally swallow each other alive. Structure and rules are needed. Too many rules can suppress and suffocate us, but the right structure and framework actually set us free! So yes, Miriam might need to bring her own kugels and muffins when she goes away for Shabbos, because without it she goes off track. And yes, Sarah might never be able to just eat as much as she wants whenever she wants, because her appetite is larger than her caloric needs. But who is to say that others are more free? Is eating to your heart’s content and then being filled with guilt and regret true freedom? Is starving all day because you are too busy to eat, and then eating all night while feeling depressed and out of control true freedom? When thinking about freedom this yom tov think about what it truly means to be free. Basya Kovacs is a nutrition counselor at Nutrition by Tanya and is the manager of the Monsey and Monroe locations. Tiles and mosaics have been around for thousands of years. In the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Persia, palaces were adorned with intricate designs and geometric patterns, and in medieval times as well, prominent buildings in Europe were often decorated with splendid, elaborately tiled scenes. Ceramic Creations may not be that old, but it is Monsey’s first tile store, with almost 24 years of satisfied customers — and beautiful homes — to show for it. Ceramic Creations leads the market with a selection of tiles that cannot be beat. “They have the most diverse selection you could imagine and stock exclusive brands that no other local store carries,” says one of Monsey’s popular interior designers.

They are part of the Monsey community for decades, so Ceramic Creations understands the needs of local families well. The showroom, centrally located in the Monsey Hub, carries a great selection of tiles with budget pricing. This range is carefully selected to be up-to-date and stylish, and nothing reveals that it is a lower-end choice. Often, these are actually more expensive tiles, which Creations is able to offer at a lower price due to their placement in the wholesale market. The friendly team at Ceramic Creations is not just comprised of people who understand tiles and have great taste; they are qualified and professional college-educated interior designers with years of experience. That knowledge and expertise make all the difference. They will sit down with each prospective client to hear about their project, read the architect’s blueprint, get a feel for their taste and give free design advice. “We take each tile project personally,” says the man-

agement. When the tiles are chosen and ordered, Ceramic Creations provides a professional CAD drawing, an image of exactly how the tiles should be laid. The customer can see exactly what the finished product will look like, and the installers can avoid disappointing mistakes.

WITH TILES, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING “Creations” is the right name for a store that sells a medium with endless potential to surprise. “With tiles, you can do anything,” explains Mr. Rapaport. Actually, many people view tiles as the perfect place to inject some personality into their kitchen or bathroom. At Ceramic Creations, every classic effect and contemporary trend is within your reach for effortless style, but there is also far more. Tiles in every shape, color and size

are displayed in the store. We see rectangular, mosaic, square, hexagonal, round — and even oval and elongated — shapes. Alongside the expected are the unexpected: You’ll find cool and funky tiles; embossed and textured tiles; and metallic, glass, or even slate designs for a look that is utterly your own, very different and creatively inspired. These beautiful pieces work well as accents in flawless design schemes coordinated by Ceramic Creations’ gifted designers, adding the wowfactor to your home.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS TILES Natural looks are very on-trend at the moment, but savvy consumers have realized that covering their floors with real marble, wood or stone has its downsides. Natural materials are more porous and can get stained. Enter technol-

ogy! Ceramic Creations has an immense range of natural-looking tiles that look like real materials but have all the durability of tiles. “Today, high-resolution printers can scan in the actual stones and print them on tile. Once laid, you would never know that these are tiles and not real wood or stone,” Mr. Rapaport explains. “They are constantly perfecting this technique. Every piece of real stone is slightly different, so some companies can provide 23 different patterns of stone.” The edge of each tile is rectified so it appears like natural stone, and an expert installer will lay them close together for a completely natural look.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW? Extra-large format tiles — literally the size of a door! — are also in style today. The effect is rich and welcoming, and there is another advantage, too: Very little grout is needed, which

makes cleaning them a housekeeper’s dream. Mr. Rapaport carries countless brands that cannot be found elsewhere in Monsey, but he is particularly excited about one new product he’s found. “There is a company that customizes art panels to our clients’ specifications! You can customize the colors, shape, style and size, and use in place of tiles. They can then be backlit to great dramatic effect. This has taken tiling up a notch and made it into real artwork.” Many higher-end customers have been taking advantage of this great service, using the custom-made art panels as a decorative accent wall in their kitchen or bathroom. These design options are simply endless. Ceramic Creations is the tile center of choice for contractors and designers who are building houses or renovating large commercial proj-

ects. But smaller home-based projects are also part of the business’s structure. The staff at Ceramic Creations will gladly help you and guide you, even if you’re only redoing one bathroom or retiling your tired and outdated kitchen backsplash. While they do not actually install the tiles, they can recommend great workers and will keep in touch to make sure you get the results you want, from dramatic luxury to understated classic. One final tile tip: Make sure to tell the experts exactly what you like and need. Most tiles are graded for durability, so if you know that an area will have heavy foot traffic, constant moisture or special hygiene requirements, Ceramic Creations can guide you to the correct choice.

Ceramic Creations, for every sort of tile you can imagine.

THE CAR ROUNDS A BEND IN THE ROAD. ON ONE SIDE, the mountainside plunges steeply into a bay of blue water, and on the other side is the outskirts of a southern Italian village, weathered by the sun. Outside a small house with peeling pink walls, an older man with peaceful eyes sips espresso. Behind him, the cliff face glints in layers of beautiful natural color and streaks of exquisitely hued stone. The car stops. “It’s beautiful. The color is something else.” “It’s private property, not a quarrying site.” “Nu, we can ask him.” Hershey Margaretten and his buyer emerge from the car. Their greetings are met with a smile; Italians are formal, but friendly. “Buona sera.”

Soon they are led round to the back of the property. The garden is walled off by the cliff that had caught Hershey’s experienced eye from the car. His hunch was right; the rock gleams with shades of brilliance. Its quality, when tested, matches the stone’s beauty. Professionally chiseled, skillfully cut and carefully transported, the stone that has seen an enchanting view from a quiet coastal road in southern Italy joins thousands of slabs in the yard at Imperial Marble and Granite. For Hershey, whose family has dealt in stone since 1985, finding nature’s most striking rocks and making homes beautiful is a calling. Having learned the craft from his father R’ Shmuel Yitzchok, he spends much of the year traveling, visiting carefully selected sites all over India and

Europe with a team of artisans and professionals. Together, they locate and choose the finest marble, granite and quartz from earth’s bounty. When a beautiful source is found, however exotic and remote, its quality is carefully checked. Then the

place, kitchen, foyer or jacuzzi,” Hershey explains. First the block is cut into slabs. “We use the best laser cutting machinery, only American or Italian made. An expert cut is very significant in natural rock. Vein-cut marble

HIS HUNCH WAS RIGHT; THE ROCK GLEAMS WITH SHADES OF BRILLIANCE. ITS QUALITY, WHEN TESTED, MATCHES THE STONE’S BEAUTY. cutters move in and chisel the stones from the mountainside. “We buy massive blocks of stone, hewn straight out of beautifully colored mountains. As fabricators, our job is to bring that stone from its raw state to perfection in someone’s fire-

reveal the beauty the Creator has endowed in each piece of stone. His father, R’ Shmuel Yitzchok Margaretten, is still active in the business, which he established in Israel over thirty years ago, maintaining the standards of workmanship and service Imperial is known for. “We import a limited inventory of each color and material,” Hershey explains. “The specialty slabs that you find at Imperial are not mass-produced; each one is special.” The indoor slab yard at Imperial’s location in Ramsey, right near Airmont, is a fantastical treasure trove, a dis-

play of statement pieces with their colors surging like the sea itself, hues as rich as jewels. Rare and exotic turquoise and teal, swirling and shimmering gold and onyx, or classic muted stillness — all miracles of Nature’s design. Customers are often unsure of what they want, but just strolling through the aisles presents fabulous sources of inspiration. Imperial’s team of top designers are there to make sure that the choice is a joy, and not a haze of confusion. From remodeling an entire house to choosing the perfect finish for a small vanity in a guest room, they can guide newcomers through the design process from start to finish. Imperial Marble has installed bespoke counters in thousands of beautiful homes in Brooklyn, Monsey and Lakewood, but Hershey and his team want to speak about ordinary heimish and yeshivish homes, too. “Of course, we don’t only deal in high-end, designer materials. We have thousands of satisfied clients who have bought our quartz, quartzite or lower-end granite. Our slab yard features hundreds of beautiful, contemporary products, all competitively priced.” Customers who are on a budget have been delighted with Imperial for a few good reasons: quality control, expert workmanship and lifetime care on every single piece they install. Imperial can compete with anyone on price as they import and fabricate all their materials directly and have no middlemen. Yet no one can compete with Imperial quality.

Glamour!

When remodeling a kitchen or bathroom on a budget, it can be tempting to accept the cheapest quote on countertops. But the experts warn that very cheap can sometimes turn out very expensive. On several occasions, Hershey recalls, homeowners who had chosen to work with very cheap retailers found their work so shoddy and unprofessional that they called Imperial to rip out crooked counters and install them properly. R’ Shmuel Yitzchok Margaretten started out with just eight employees. Today, Imperial has 45 workers, but the pride they take in their work, from start to finish, is the same. Chiseled from Hashem’s exquisitely colored mountainside in Italy or India and transformed into a showstopping tabletop, marble, quartz and granite certainly travel a long and interesting journey. “A lot of heimishe food has been served on our counters,” Hershey says proudly, “and continuing to serve you is our lifetime promise.”

Big Win for Tartikov as Judge Allows Yeshivah to Submit Application AFTER ALMOST TEN YEARS OF legal wrangling, a federal judge has ruled in favor of Congregation Rabbinical College of Tartikov, clearing the way for the yeshivah to submit a site plan application to Village of Pomona. The Journal News reported that Judge Kenneth Karas ruled that parts of the Pomona zoning code were discriminatory and unfairly limited the yeshivah’s rights to build on its 100-acre property located on Route 306 at Route 202. The judgment allowed for Tartikov to submit its application for the project and allowed for student family housing to be constructed at the site without special permits. The

judgment also required Pomona to reimburse Tartikov approximately $2 million in attorney’s and legal fees, in addition to $43,000 in legal fees that the village had been ordered to pay at a previous ruling. Attorney Paul Savad, who represents the yeshivah, praised the decision saying, “This gives us a level playing field.” Current plans would allow for 250 students and their families to be housed at the site. Savad said that a second phase of the project could include housing for an additional 250 students and their families.

County Smoking Age To Be Upped to 21? HOPING TO IMPROVE OVERALL health in Rockland, county legislators have approved a measure that would raise the legal age for the sale of both regular and electronic cigarettes from 18 to 21 years of age. The measure, which is designed to limit access to addictive substances, was passed by a near-unanimous vote, reported The Journal News. “The younger people are when they start using tobacco products, the greater their risk of nicotine addiction and

heavy daily smoking, as well as increased difficulty in quitting,” said Legislator Aney Paul, who sponsored the bill. “Keeping tobacco products out of the hands and lungs of young people will help save lives.” If the law is approved by County Executive Ed Day, it would ban the sale of all tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, e-cigs, cigars and rolling papers, to anyone under 21. Those found to be in violation of the law would be fined $2,000 per day, per violation.

Construction About to Unfold on New Newark Passenger Terminal DOMESTIC TRAVELERS FLYING in and out of Newark Airport will find themselves facing an upgraded experience in the coming years, as construction is about to begin on an all-new state-of-the-art terminal. Curbed New York reported that Newark’s oldest terminal, Terminal A, will be replaced by the year 2021 with the new Terminal One. Located just to the south of Terminal A’s current location, Terminal One will encompass approximately 1 million square feet and will be able to accommodate 13.6 million passengers each year at its 33 gates. The new terminal will be linked to both a new parking garage and the EWR AirTrain, and will allow for a 12-gate expansion in the future. According to Dezeen, the renovations will allow for more efficient check-ins and security screenings and will offer more amenities than the existing Terminal A. The new bi-level steel and glass Terminal One is expected to cost $1.41 billion. The redesign will be led by Grimshaw, an architec-

tural firm that has been involved in airport renovations around the world, and will leave Newark well-poised for potential growth, as air travel continues to rise in popularity. “The most successful contemporary airports of today have a clear vision for the future in anticipation of change,” said Grimshaw in a written statement. “Terminal One will position EWR to successfully accommodate a rapidly changing industry and unprecedented levels of growth.”

W WEEK 4

A complete menu and recipe book by Sussy Kraus is available at all seforim and Judaica stores for the price of $12.

WE’RE FINALLY IN THE home stretch! The last leg of our journey. Some consider it the point in their work where they stop being as productive and start slacking off, and for procrastinators, this is probably the time to start. But the good part is that no matter where you are coming from, we’ll all finish at the same time. It’s like making a pot of kneidlach. Every kneidel goes into the pot at a different time, but they are all ready together. The first kneidel may be highly overcooked while the last kneidel may not be so fluffy, but they’re all kneidlach. The difference between the concrastinator and the procrastinator is that one will eat frozen food while the other will eat fresh food. Nevertheless, the latter will work much harder and may not get to prepare all the extra goodies. I am a last-minute person myself and rarely have stuff in the freezer, but I do know of people who bake and prepare so much in advance that they write the date on each pan and container to know when it was prepared. So on Shabbos Vayikra, they eat the cake that was baked Beshalach, and Bamidbar they eat the cake from Vayikra. I usually have the Beshalach cake on Beshalach, and on

140 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Shabbos Vayikra, I have no cake at all. I always joke that two weeks before proactive people turn 120, they will be able to sit on the recliner with their feet up, but two weeks before I turn 120, I will still have to cook! All kidding aside, every person should do whatever works for her specifically and whatever makes life easier. I have to admit that being prepared is probably anytime better than chasing one’s tail. So here we are, re-scrubbing and re-vacuuming, cooking and baking, shopping and hemming, and for some of us, it’s in addition to a full-time job. Very soon we’ll all be sitting down and looking at our beautifully decked tables and loads of good food with a tired, yet triumphant smile, knowing that we won, that we got to the finish line. It doesn’t matter whether we accomplish everything on our to-do list or whether our Pesach cleaning is strictly that and not a full-fledged spring cleaning. What matters most is that we get there with a smile, with patience, with love and with simcha. We’ve all heard the vort of the heilige Berdichever, who says that the acronym of “‫ קערן‬,‫ רייבן‬,‫ שארן‬,‫ ”קראצן‬is the same as tekiah, shevarim, teriah, tekiah. Tosafos in Yerushalmi says that when we blow the shofar the first time, the Satan gets a little confused, but the second time around, there’s total confusion. Reb Elimelech Biederman says that the same thing happens here. After your child walks into a Pesach’dige room with a cookie in his hand, which means you now have to clean the room a second time, you should do it calmly and with a smile because that’s when we really confuse the Satan. So seize the moment, put on a smile and make a dash for the finish line.

Glaze For the glaze, you must make confectioner’s sugar first. Confectioner’s sugar is regular sugar simply ground very finely with a bit of cornstarch mixed in for thickening. For Pesach, you grind a cup of sugar very finely in a coffee grinder, and then add 1 heaping tablespoon of potato starch. To make the glaze, prepare one cup of confectioner’s sugar, mix it with ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional) and add 1 tablespoon of hot water at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency. Drizzle over carrot muffins. They can also be enjoyed without the glaze, or drizzled with caramel cream.

And now for gebrokts… This year there is no time to prepare it on yom tov, so if you don’t brok all Pesach, ask your rav when you can prepare it. Some do it before yom tov and some do it on Chol Hamoed. It’s best to cook these foods in disposable pans so there is no question of using keilim that had gebrokts. Note: You will see that the recipes for kneidlach and chremzlach are exactly the same, except for the addition of sugar in the chremzlach. The difference is in how each food gets cooked.

MATZAH CHREMZLACH There are many different ways to make chremzlach. If you don’t like it sweet, omit the sugar. My mother used to add finely mashed potatoes for a fluffier latke. For delicious variations, you can also add shredded apples or chopped nuts. 1 lb. matzah meal 16 eggs 1 cup seltzer or water 1 T. salt ½ cup shmaltz 1½ cups sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all ingredients well and fry.

Have a wonderful and Kosher Pesach.

lose weight this Pesach while still enjoying your food “I don't know what to do. Pesach is coming up. All the matzah.. The late night meals.. The amount of meals all together! I really don't want to put the weight back on.” Sruly said to me with a worried look on his face

At the beginning of each course you fill up your plate with all the goodies that you want. The plate that you put together for yourself needs to last you the whole course. There are 3 reasons why I love this rule;

Don't forget to enjoy your Yom Tov. Relaxing and having a nice time with the family is an important part of living a healthy life

Contrary to popular beliefs, Pesach doesn't have to be a Yom Tov where weight gain is a sure thing. By playing your cards right, you will be able to eat all the foods you want while still losing weight. Before we move on we have to make sure that one thing is clear. The issue isn't the matzah itself nor is the issue how late you eat. Yes, we tend to have more meals over Yom Tov. But with self control and discipline it doesn't have to be an issue. The real issue is the amount of food we eat... plus, matzah’s don't help the situation..

1. Easy to hold yourself accountable by each meal. 2. It forces you to eat slowly. (You don't want to be the first person finished.) Then you’ll be stuck at the table not being able to eat. 3. You have to be strategic with what foods you want. I would hope it goes without saying but ... we are referring to a normal plate size here. By taking a serving plate, filling it up with food sky high in the name of the one plate rule is a sure way to put on weight. Use normal Yom Tov plates.

I know I really enjoy eating matzah and it doesn't fill me up. Before you know it, you've consumed 2 matzah's and your just starting the first course. And still, somehow by each meal you feel starving hungry; Like you haven't eaten in days! Let's be real for a moment. We can all understand that discipline & self control is what you need. I t is one thing to talk about it... It's another to actually do it. How do you practice self discipline then? Let me introduce you to the One Plate Rule. This simple but effective rule will make sure you don't overeat while still getting to enjoy all the foods.

For matzah we use a similar strategy. Plan ahead of time how much matzah you are going to have. Half a matzah? A quarter?
At the start of the meal take the matzah put it by your place and that is all you have for the whole meal. With this little planning ahead you will be able to enjoy Yom Tov without the aftermath of heartburns and feeling heavy. Have a wonderful Yom Tov. And I look forward to chatting to you after Pesach Tzvi Smith is a weight loss consultant who specializes in providing a full weight loss program including: exercise, nutrition, stress management and more.. I GREW UP IN A HOUSE WHERE WE ATE GEBROKTS ON PESACH. Sort of. Because he was relatively young when his hometown of Bedzin, located perilously close to the German border, was invaded in 1939, my father’s recollections of his family’s minhagim are sometimes fuzzy. I think I was a teenager when my father casually mentioned that we don’t eat gebrokts on the first two days of Pesach, the minhag he remembered from the alte heim in Poland. Surprised, my mother looked up and replied, “Of course you eat gebrokts.” No, my father insisted, gebrokts were off-limits on the first two days, which is why we never ate kneidlach on the first two days of Pesach. (Actually, I think the reason we never ate kneidlach on Pesach was that my mother, who makes fabulous kneidlach now, rarely — if ever — made kneidlach back then.) Clearly, there had been a misunderstanding between my parents.

154 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

When my father told my mother that there were no kneidlach to be served on the first two days of Pesach, in his mind, that covered all gebrokts items. On the other hand, my American born and bred mother took him at his word, deducing that kneidlach, and only kneidlach, were off-limits until Chol Hamoed, while all other matzah meal items were totally fine. Thus, my siblings and I grew up enjoying rather delicious matzah meal rolls on

Which meant that mixing the batter in advance was a big no-no. After that, there were no kneidlach for many years. It didn’t make sense to start the meal a full hour later just to have kneidlach, and while my wonderful husband asked for kneidlach every year, he didn’t press the issue when I nixed the idea, contenting himself with crumbled matzah in his soup to mark the final day of Pesach. We continued to be a kneidel-free household for well over 15 years, till one day the fateful call came. It was from my son-in-law, asking if we could have kneidlach on the last night of yom tov. I explained the problem to my son-in-law, and he asked me if I would agree to kneidlach if he could expedite the process so it took as little time as possible. Can you say no to a son-in-law? I know I certainly can’t. My son-in-law showed up on the sixth day of Pesach, carrying a small plastic baggie of shmurah matzah meal, his mother’s kneidel recipe stapled to the bag. He insisted on keeping the matzah meal in the refrigerator in the hopes that chilling it would cut down on the amount of time the batter needed to set prior to cooking. And true to his word, he came home from shul on the last night of Pesach, mixed up the batter and popped it into the freezer. We agreed to chill the batter for just 12 minutes and cook the kneidlach for a scant 15 minutes. Because the batter was still a little on the mushy side, I can’t tell you that my son-in-law’s kneidlach were perfectly round. But they were delicious. And they also left me wondering if my son-in-law had set a new precedent that would leave me facing the kneidel conundrum on an annual basis. After all, it is

We couldn’t even have it in the house. Which meant that mixing the batter in advance was a big no-no. Pesach and fabulous matzah farfel stuffing. Fast-forward a few years, and I married into a family that didn’t brok. It was totally fine with me. Apart from the aforementioned rolls, I didn’t miss the gebrokts at all. In fact, having been on both sides of this issue, I can tell you that potato starch cakes are waaaay better than their matzah meal–based counterparts, which taste, not surprisingly, kind of matzah-y. My mother-in-law always made kneidlach for the last day of Pesach, and when it was my turn to make Pesach, I found myself facing a dilemma: How to get kneidlach ready quickly enough on that last night of yom tov? For those of you who have never made kneidlach, they really aren’t all that complicated to make, but it does take an hour for them to be ready to eat. Once mixed, it takes about a half hour for the batter to set, and then the kneidlach need another 30 minutes of cooking time. This means that the time for the yom tov seudah, which is already pretty late, gets pushed off an entire hour just for the kneidlach. There had to be a better way. And for a year or two I thought I found one. Close to licht bentching time on the sixth day of Pesach, I stirred together my kneidel batter and left it in a bowl in the refrigerator. This meant that as soon as the men came home from shul after Maariv on the last night of Pesach, I could drop the kneidlach into the pot and let them start cooking. I thought I had saved myself that half hour of chilling time in our quest for kneidlach. But I thought wrong. Informing my husband of my ingenious plan that cut my kneidel preparation time in half, he explained to me that it wasn’t just that we couldn’t eat gebrokts before the last day of Pesach; we couldn’t even have it in the house.

Can you say no to a son-inlaw? I know I certainly can’t. awfully hard to say no to your husband’s annual bid for kneidlach after having said yes to your son-in-law when he made the identical request. This year I may have been granted a reprieve, with Acharon Shel Pesach falling out on Shabbos when, obviously, no kneidlach can be cooked. Is it possible that my husband may go to the Rav during Chol Hamoed to find out if kneidlach can indeed be prepared a few hours early? Yup, that is a definite possibility, although I have absolutely no idea what the answer to that shailah will be. Maybe I should pull out the food processor and mix up a batch of shmurah matzah meal, just in case.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN. Each time I see the beautiful handiwork of the children at the Pesach Seder table, I’m brought back to a memory from years ago. I remember coming to the Seder table equipped with my decorated Haggadah, which was chock-full of divrei Torah and arts and crafts, and the anticipation of showing it all off for what I thought would be an adoring audience. After the first round of shares from my siblings and me, though, it seemed the adoration wasn’t quite what I’d imagined. My grandmother, a”h, wasn’t looking all that happy. Her overall pride in us wasn’t a question, but the way our show-and-tell experience was going was not to her liking.

Finally, she voiced her thoughts. “Enough with the notebooks! A Seder isn’t about the notebooks. In Europe, we never had notebooks, but we knew how to feel the Haggadah. We knew when to cry, when to sing, when to dance. It was Pesach.” Her words rang so true. In our excitement to share all we learned, we weren’t really learning and sharing the meanings and feelings of what the realities of galus and geulah are all about. We weren’t leaving our own “Mitzrayim” or embracing freedom in a way that would make it a reality. It’s that much harder for us women, who don’t even have the luxury of school to get us into the mood and reality of Pesach. Pesach typically conjures up images of overwhelming beforeduring-and-after work, changing over to spring in wardrobe and mind-

set, deciding on Chol Hamoed trips that promise the most fun and least complaints, and…Oh! Right! Something about slavery to freedom, about the potential of geulah out of the depths and darkness of galus. In all the frenzy of preparation, the energy of celebration and the general stress of hosting, we can easily forget the truest theme and power of the time at hand. By the time we come to the Seder, it’s tough to remember to make time and have the mental and emotional energy to think and feel beyond the menu, the mob and the mess. It’s not just on Pesach that we get caught up in the momentum of the time and miss out on the bigger message. Rav Chaim Dov Keller of Telshe Chicago told a story of his two-yearold grandson who was asked how to tell time on an old-fashioned,

By the time we come to the Seder, it’s tough to remember to make time and have the mental and emotional energy to think and feel beyond the menu, the mob and the mess.

three-handed clock. Twoyear-olds don’t typically say “I don’t know”; they figure things out. This little boy studied the clock and confidently said, “Zaidy, that little hand is broken; it doesn’t do anything. The other one does a little, but if you really want to know what time it is, just watch the one going round and round!” We are all, said Rav Keller, like that twoyear-old. Sometimes we’re so busy with what’s busiest, loudest and most apparent to us that we miss the bigger pictures of life. We aren’t mindful of the moment in a way that would help us really experience what we are living through. Maybe that in itself is a form of slavery. We are so tied down to our responsibilities, so focused on our productivity and quantifiable measures of success, that we don’t let ourselves just be and feel the feelings of the times we are living. We are so bent on getting our younger kids fed and to sleep that we don’t look at them and recognize the magic of their beauty and goodness, their fragility and strength that mesh together so magnificently. We are so anxious to get our older kids married and settled that we miss getting to know them and their yearnings and goals, miss marveling at their newfound maturity and sincerity and passion and drive. We are so nervous about doing our jobs well that we forget about stepping back to evaluate our values, take stock of our achievements and appreciate the smile of a coworker, or notice the frustration of a colleague who needs our support. We are so busy playing our part in the running of our house that we don’t connect to our most precious team player; days can go by, and we may

not really communicate with our husbands. We are often so busy making dinners, making the house function and making a living that we don’t make time to live. Freedom looks like time to pause, to reflect, to notice our surroundings, our thoughts and the way we feel. It’s slowing down to take in the moment and experience what we are living, to embrace it — as opposed to just walking through it on our way to the next moment. It’s seeing people and things in a way that we didn’t see them before. To see the mastery of Hashem’s creations and appreciate the brilliance of the map of our lives and how it intertwines with others’. It’s having a conversation where you really hear and feel heard. It’s having a laugh or cry that feels genuine and that you hold as long as it lasts without rushing through it. It’s looking into someone’s eyes and seeing him or her as a soul and one that brings meaning into your life in a way that no one else can. It’s noticing color and depth and fragrance, feeling wind and joy and realizing when you are holding your breath. The Seder can be a time when we really do leave galus and opt for geulah. If we shift — at the very table we sit — from slavery to freedom in the way we experience the Seder, we will have come to a form of geulah that is in our reach daily. Look around the table at all of the people there. Let yourself feel how precious each person is to you, and stop and remember what you learn from having each in your life and the way you’ve grown as the result of each relationship. Look at each person and mentally note something you are impressed by or something you’re proud of them for. Let your eyes rest on the table itself, feeling anything that comes up about the things on it. Anything sentimental? Any memories from years past and about people no longer present? Take in the fact that this table represents a tradition that links us to so many generations past and to the future generations that we hope to impact. Really focus on the kittel worn by the Seder’s chief-in-

162 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

command. Think of the contrast, of how kingly it looks, while giving meaning to the fact that it will be the last attire his body will wear in this world, that the time we have is so precious and that the end of life is as much as a reality as the day we live. All we do and who we become is so critical; it defines the kittel of our noble lives. Learning the lesson of living a life of geulah is something that will define our eternity. How many other contrasting messages the Seder offers: The wine is the drink of noblemen and kings, yet also conjures up the image of blood spilled. The matzah accompanied us to freedom, but was also the bread of slavery. Charoses is sweet and fruity, but is also the symbol of the cement we dreaded. And more. Really note and feel the contrasts in your life. It’s never all bad, and it’s not yet all good. We can seamlessly flow through whichever day it is and stage we’re at and let ourselves feel happy or sad… and connect to Hashem at each stage and live it with Him. And we can know that neither type of stage, good or hard, is proof of how much or little He loves us. “Imo Anochi b’tzarah” (Tehillim 91); He is with us even through our hardest times — and He promises the potential of better, freer times in an instant. Allow yourself to think of any type of freedom and bracha you hope for in your life now and, recognizing Hashem’s power, believe that you can experience a contrasting beautiful time in the blink of an eye. Connect to the words of the precious Haggadah — to recalling our strengths, the realities of the world that surrounds us, and the attitudes of our enemies and, l’havdil, our greats. Acknowledge the pain and

rejoice over the victories; count the dayeinus of your life, each worthy of singing over. Feel the interest and attention Hashem has in your life and how all is perfectly scripted to benefit your neshamah in a way so unique and perfect, even during the labor pains of your growth during hard times. What is a sleep center?

CliCk itdesign 845.445.9646

A sleep center is a medical facility dedicated to diagnosing and treating patients with sleep related problems. Rockland Sleep Center offers the most recent advanced technology in sleep diagnosis and treatments to improve sleep health. We are affiliated with board certified top specialists in the field of sleep medicine who excel in patient care. Approximately 70 million people in the United States suffer from sleep problems, and more than half have a chronic sleep disorder. There are more than 100 types of sleep disorders, which means it’s important to get a proper diagnosis with individualized treatment. Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep each day. You know you’re getting enough sleep if you feel refreshed when you awaken and remain alert throughout the day. If you consistently have trouble sleeping or are very sleepy while you are awake, you may need a professional evaluation to determine if you have a sleep disorder.

Answer these questions to see if you may have a sleep problem. • Do you feel sleepy during the day even after a good night’s sleep? • Do you often wake up at night and have trouble falling back to sleep? • Have you been told you snore loudly? • Have you been told or suspect you stop breathing while asleep? • Do you have morning headaches? • Do you toss and turn all night? • Do you suffer from high blood pressure? • Have you fallen asleep at inappropriate times, such as while driving? If you answered yes to one or more of the preceding questions you may have a sleeping problem. While this questionnaire isn’t a substitute for a professional diagnosis, it can help you determine whether or not to seek a professional opinion.

What is a sleep evaluation? Obstructive Sleep Apnea Left Untreated

Understanding Sleep Apnea Snoring is often more than just annoying. It may be a symptom of a more serious sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. However, not all people with sleep apnea snore. Usually when you sleep, the muscles that control the upper airway relax; this is normal. However, if they relax too much, the airway narrows and you snore. The muscles can relax even further causing a blockage of the airway and you actually stop breathing. This is called “Obstructive Sleep Apnea” (OSA). Other factors can cause this as well. An enlarged uvula or swollen tonsils, a nasal obstruction or certain facial attributes can also cause OSA. Each episode can last ten seconds or more and has been known to happen hundreds of times a night; disrupting your sleep without you even being aware that it’s happening. Sleep apnea is often associated with excessive daytime sleepiness because your rest is regularly disturbed. However, you may not have symptoms and still have apnea.

In addition to affecting your overall quality of life, Obstructive Sleep Apnea can cause serious health risks.

Cardiac Problems Abnormality Heart rhythms, heart attack and heart failure

Diabetes

Stroke

Increased Traffic & workplace Accidents

Memory Problems & inability to think correctly

High Blood Pressure

We’re here to help!

Regain control of your life through proper diagnosis and treatment. Our goal is to help you achieve restful, regenerative sleep!

A sleep Evaluation is painless. Each patient completes a questionnaire about their sleep problems. An extensive consultation appointment with a board certified sleep specialist then focuses on your history and symptoms of sleep problems. During this appointment the sleep specialist may determine you require an overnight sleep study.

How will my sleep study be monitored? The sleep rooms at Rockland Sleep Center are private rooms with private bathrooms and showers. The rooms are furnished with full size beds, recliners and cable television. A variety of electrodes and monitoring devices are connected to you during the sleep test. While asleep, our registered technologist monitor your brain wave activity, muscle activity, blood oxygen levels, airflow from your nose and mouth, and your chest and abdomen effort of breathing. After your testing is complete, a technologist will perform an analysis of your recording. The physician will then interpret your test. Once a diagnosis has been made, your options will be explained to you. Together, we determine the most effective treatment for your particular sleep disorder. The most common treatment today is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). The CPAP equipment provides a gentle flow of positive-pressure air through a nasal mask to keep your airway open while you sleep, preventing snoring and apnea. You will experience immediate relief and find your energy and vitality restored. While CPAP works in most cases of sleep apnea, other methods might need to be employed to solve your sleep problem. Some less common treatments include oral appliances and or surgery. Your treatments will be most effective if you are fully informed of your condition and follow the prescribed actions that need to be taken to bring you the safest and quickest relief.

By: Gitty Luria Trips are planned, directions mapped and essentials packed. But the food bag is still pitifully empty. Matzah sandwiches are great, but you can’t always count on finding washing stations en route. Neither are last night’s leftovers a viable option in a moving car. Almonds and apples are another good snack choice, but it’s crucial to have wholesome foods on hand since Pesach food may by tough to come by on the go. Besides, fruits and nuts just won’t cut it on those energy-sapping trips. Here are some finger foods that can be prepared ahead or whipped up in a jiffy so they won’t rob your few morning hours. And, best of all, they’re neat enough to be enjoyed on the go!

CUP IT!

FLIP IT!

Muffin pans aren’t just for muffins; use them to make your table foods portable! Just make sure to grease your pans well so that your “meal cups” pop out easily.

Pancakes have always been a family favorite, appealing to adults and kids alike! They’re also of the easiest foods to eat on the go. SWEET POTATO PATTIES

EGG CUPS Scrambled or sunny side up, pack on the protein with this versatile dish! Bake them plain with a sprinkle of salt, or bring on some color with chopped-up pieces of veggies. Bake in a preheated oven on 350° for about 25 minutes, or until the egg is set. FISH OR MEAT PATTIES Why stand over the frying pan when you can just ship them off to bake? Save yourself the time — and calories — and scoop the mixture into muffin cups. Baking time will vary, depending on the recipe. KUGELETTES A twist on the classic potato kugel, kugelettes bring the comforting aromas with you on the go. Most kugel recipes should work; just heat the well-oiled pans in the oven before filling them. Bake in preheated oven on 425° for one hour.

Mix 1 cup mashed sweet potato with 4 eggs, 4 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Drop batter by tablespoonful into hot, greased pan, and cook for about 3 minutes on each side, or until golden. CREAM CHEESE PANCAKES Cream together 8 ounces cream cheese (1 container), 4 eggs and 4 tablespoons sugar. Lightly butter a skillet for richer flavor. Pour 1/8 cup of batter into hot pan, and cook for about 3 minutes on each side, or until golden. MASHED POTATO PATTIES Leftover mashed potato? Delight your kids with these kid-friendly mashed potato patties! Season 2 cups mashed potatoes to taste and add ¼ cup potato starch and 2 beaten eggs. Form small patties and cook over medium heat, about 4 minutes per side, or until golden. Consistency and texture may vary, depending on how mashed potatoes were originally prepared.

SKEW IT! Pile an entire meal onto a skewer, and have fun eating it too! Even leftovers are more appealing as a kabob! Have your kids customize their own skewers, if possible, and package in cellophane bags for even more excitement. GRILL ON THE GO

FRUIT-A-BOBS

VEG-A-BOBS

Grill a pan of chicken nuggets along with onions and veggies for a deliciously filling meal! Bake on 400° for 20 minutes, then roast for 2 to 3 minutes for some color.

Fruits make for a refreshing energy booster between activities! Create patterns or rainbows with cut-up fruits and melons.

Fresh or grilled, vegetables sure are more tempting when kabob-ed! To create a rainbow design, use red tomatoes, orange butternut squash or sweet potato, yellow squash, green peppers and purple onions.

Did you know that vegetables possess magical wrapping abilities, too? LET-US EAT! Use a lettuce leaf as a wrap for your favorite salads! Add bits of protein — like fish, meat or eggs — for a more filling meal. Layer multiple leaves to prevent leaks.

Omedia

WRAP IT!

Pick your Brand, Choose your Model.

STUFFED PEPPERS Slice off the tops of mini peppers to create “cups” for egg salad, fish salad or guacamole. Wrap tightly in saran wrap or aluminum foil. Alternatively, you can use kirbies and prepare with the same method. Slice off the top, and carefully empty out the flesh. Stuff, and enjoy this neat little meal!

SNACK IT! Fruits and nuts are fantastic energy-boosters, and though portable on their own, here are some creative ways to make them more exciting. APPLE SANDWICHES Spread nut butter between two apple slices for a filling snack. Making your own nut butter is easier than you think! Simply blend (lightly roasted) nuts for about 10 to 15 minutes, scraping down sides of blender every so often. If blender gets hot, give it a few-minute break. Optional add-ins: oil, salt, sugar, vanilla.

APPLESAUCE BAGS Freezer Ziploc bags make great disposable containers! Pour a cupful of applesauce into a small freezer Ziploc bag and seal well. When ready to eat, open the bag a bit, stick in a straw and seal bag again. Now

sip that refreshing dessert, and toss the bag when you’re done! Easy applesauce recipe: Fill pot with peeled, cored apples, and add an inch of water. Cover, cook on low for about 6 hours (or more if desired), then blend. The natural sweetness intensifies as it cooks, so this requires no sugar!

HOMEMADE FRUIT LEATHER For a light snack, homemade fruit leather is a delightful treat! See recipe in Issue 136.

IT WAS

COLD. It was dismal. It was shortly after Chanukah 1942 in the Kovno Ghetto, and living under conditions of squalor and hunger, fear was a constant presence. There was hardly space and hardly any food. The Yidden constantly dreaded the threats of beatings and ever-increasing restrictions and sanctions placed upon them by the German beasts. Yet the Yiddish spark remained very much alive. Courageous displays of mesiras nefesh for Torah and mitzvos attested to the ghetto residents’ staunch faith and unyielding drive to survive. Reb Moshe Goldkorn, Hyd, was one such mesiras nefesh Yid. He worked at the Juden Brigade, which gave him access beyond the ghetto walls. Every morning he would leave for work, and before curfew time he would return to the ghetto. Though Pesach was still a few months away, Reb Moshe was already thinking about yom tov. How, under these conditions, would he ever be able to be mekayem the mitzvah of matzah on Pesach? Food was so scarce that there was no flour to be found in the ghetto, and certainly not of the fine kind needed for baking matzos. While at work, he devised a plan. He approached some Lithuanian gentiles and struck

MATZAH FOR MANY pockets, tapped him and examined him thoroughly. Sure enough, the offensive bag was found. The cruel guard ruthlessly whipped Reb Moshe countless times, and in the process, knocked out all of Reb Moshe’s teeth. “Let everyone see what happens to one who tries to smuggle food products against the law!” the German cried. Finally, Reb Moshe was left alone, and he entered the

He was physically broken, but with gargantuan efforts, he refused to become broken inside. He thanked Hashem for having allowed him to survive the ordeal with unflagging spirits. It was almost ironic, then, that despite the joyous state he attempted to maintain, he was found crying bitterly at the door of Rav Ephraim Oshry, a rav in the ghetto. “Tell me,” he managed to say between broken sobs, “how will I be able to be mekayem the mitzvah of matzah?!” After all the effort, sweat and danger that he had subjected himself to in order to acquire matzos for himself and his fellow community members, he could not even eat the priceless matzos! He had no teeth left with which to bite or chew! He was reluctant to soften the matzah in water as his minhag was not to eat gebrokts on Pesach. But what was he to do? It was a sorrowful question for a rav, asked under sorrowful conditions. Sadly, it was one that had no simple answer. But even more significantly, it was an expression of utter kiddush Hashem. Neither the beating, the torturous agony nor even the loss of his teeth caused Reb Moshe to dwell on his pain. Only his lack of ability to perform the special mitzvah of matzah triggered him to break down and finally shed bitter tears. This story is brought down in Me’emek Habacha, shaalos and teshuvos that were asked of Rav Ephraim Oshry during those war-torn years.

NEW ON THE SCENE

Indoor Museums launched in 2017

Pesach is when we’re glad to finally bask in the outdoors and enjoy the first wisps of spring. When the weather cooperates, that is. Here are two go-to indoor places — geared for children in two different age groups — to turn to when the temperature or elements are less than ideal. Here’s to great weather, and great fun, too!

56 minutes (expect traffic)

212-235-2016 Adults, $36; Seniors and 12 and under, $27 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.

At Gulliver’s Gate, take a fascinating, interactive tour around the world in just one day. This exhibit features 300 tiny scenes from all over, including famous manmade and natural landmarks spanning Earth. This will give you the feel of countries and places you’ve only heard or dreamed about, all in micro-mini, but so very authentic. Gulliver’s opened less than a year ago and features top model-making artists from eight different countries who have crafted its 967 buildings, 102 bridges, 100,000 miniature people and countless fine details. Each landscape was created in different parts of the world by artists from that country, each using their own methods. New York’s model, for example, was created by 16 people in Brooklyn and took almost a year to complete, while, in St. Petersburg, 26 people worked on the Russian section for 158 days. You can even join the exhibit for just $44! For that you have to step into a 3D body scanner, and a 3D model of yourself will be printed. You can either take it home, or leave it in the museum to be displayed! The London Bridge, Freedom Tower, Kremlin, Great Wall of China and so much more — all available for your viewing pleasure.

IMAGINE THAT!!! MUSEUM

4 Vreeland Road, Florham Park, NJ 07932 47 minutes 973-966-8000 Children, $15.99; Adults, $6.99 Tuesday–Friday: 10:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Sunday: 10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

While not a new destination, this museum, which reopened this past December after receiving a major face-lift and many new additions, is a great indoor space for any young adventurer. Filled with interactive activities to spark the young mind, children who have visited loved the experience. There’s a huge arts-and-crafts area, a dress-up area, a puppet theater, a construction area, a grocery store area, a fire truck, a pirate ship with a slide and many more interactive sections where children’s imaginations can go wild. The museum’s concept is that “children learn through play,” and they sure do with so many things to view and try! There’s an electronic sand table, interactive color wheel, music room and life-sized Lite-Brite game where pegs light up when a child plugs it in. There’s also a climbing zone where kids can unleash their energy in its two stories of tunnels and slides.

LET’S KEEP OUR

COMMUNITY

CLEAN Community Outreach Center “Keep our Community Clean” Initiative for Monsey Residents Community Outreach Center (COC) is pleased to announce the next push in the “Keep our Community Clean” initiative. With new leadership in the Town of Ramapo, and a new level of enthusiasm for this community improvement initiative, a big clean-up is on the way. Your cooperation is important, and we will be doubling down on all efforts to engage residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their property neat and clean. Clean streets are an important element of a town’s image and quality of life. Simple changes in handling garbage can make Monsey a more beautiful and pleasant place to live. This phase of the initiative is about keeping waste in its place. Out of sight. The law requires that residents bring their garbage cans to the curbside only the night before their scheduled garbage pickup. Once the garbage is collected, empty receptacles are to be returned to the garbage can enclosure or lined up neatly at the side of the house. Some residents fail to follow the law and leave their garbage cans at the curb throughout the week, which leads to unpleasant garbage spills, and messy looking streets and yards. The visual impact is enormous, because even a little litter goes a long way. These violations can also lead to fines and court summonses. In addition to calling for individual cooperation with keeping private property tidy and clean, COC will be expanding cleanup activities to include public space, which is our collective responsibility to keep clean. Suzanne Lake will be the first public location to receive much needed attention. The once beautiful lake has been an eyesore for some time, suffering from neglect and abuse by those who leave behind their garbage of all types and description. The new project will kick off after Pesach. To volunteer and participate in this cleanup event, please call COC for details.

For questions and comments, please contact Community Outreach Center at communitycleaninitiative@coconline.org.

TO-DO LIST DAY

BEDIKAS CHOMETZ!

Today is your (or rather, your mother's) lucky day. It depends on which way you look at it. Have your mother give you five jobs, and do it joyfully and efficiently. Of course, if there are ten things on your mother's to-do list, then that's double the fun! Sing while you do job number one, dance through the second job, and hop while you do chore number three. What, no hopping? You gotta do something. Be creative! Now smile all the way through your fourth job. And fifth, but certainly not least, you get to say a joke to everyone who walks past while you're marking that one off your list.

So suddenly, the day is here. Okay, not so suddenly. After all, we did have snow all along to remind us that Pesach is coming. The entire house need to be re-vacuumed thoroughly, and that job is yours. Wash all door knobs. Don't use a spray that will make them slippery and render the doors unable to be opened again once they get closed. On second thought, maybe it's not such a terrible idea, but do it only for the doors of rooms that you didn't have a chance to clean. Cover the faucets, refrigerator handles and anything else your family covers with silver foil or store-bought protectors. Cover and clean telephones so they’re all ready for the grand Chol Hamoed discussions of “Where are we going today?” Set the table today so there's one less thing to do tomorrow. A set Seder table has such a calming effect on a home.

Friday, March 30

EREV YOM TOV Before sof zman bi’ur chometz, empty and vacuum the chometz corner. Before chatzos, help with the lastminute erev yom tov laundry. Lend a hand with bathing the little ones, trimming their nails and putting them down to nap. Make sure to take a nap yourself. If you absolutely insist on not taking a nap because you're a big girl, let your mother take a nap instead. There are 220 things on your mother’s list today, to be precise. Anything you help with will lighten her load and give you a warm feeling that will last throughout yom tov.

The Grand Teen Clean contest is done, but I'm actually starting mine. I'm stocking up on ice cream, and every time I do a chore happily, I will have one. That's a lot of ice cream, I know. Like hair, which is mostly dead, feathers have no nerves and can’t reconstruct themselves after being damaged.

Feather follicles have muscles that hold on to the feathers so they don’t fall out at the slightest touch, which is why plucking a chicken or other fowl is more difficult than you’d think!

Feathers make it possible for a bird to fly, and they also provide waterproofing, sun protection, camouflage, and especially when brightly colored, serve as a display of social dominance.

A bird’s plumage usually weighs more than its skeletal structure!

Feathers serve many purposes, which are often individual to each species. Birds that spend the winter in colder climates can have 50 percent more feathers during colder months than they do in the summer. This ability to protect birds from the elements is probably also the reason penguins have more feathers than most birds, at 100 per square inch! Woodpeckers have two stiff feathers in their tail that help stabilize them when they’re banging their head against tree trunks. An owl’s peculiar disk-shaped face, which is the result of an interesting formation of feathers, helps channel sound into its ears so that it can find prey even in darkness!

FEATHERS IN CULTURE Feathers played a big role in Native American culture, and a chief’s headdress would typically have more feathers than anyone else’s in his tribe. The possession of a feather from an eagle, however, was especially significant. Why an eagle? Because Native Americans believed the eagle to be the leader of all birds since it flies higher and has better vision than other birds. Warriors were awarded eagle feathers after a display of bravery, and thus feathers on an Indian headdress were symbolic of the wearer’s accomplishments and status. Interestingly, feathers were only awarded after the warrior or brave would retell his story before a tribal court. Feather were prized possessions, and not something a warrior would stick in a bag. They were treated with care and typically displayed, either at home or on one’s person. What, exactly, were eagle feathers worth, in American Indian terms? In some tribes, a tail of an eagle had the value of a pony in trade!

FEATHERS IN FASHION The late 1800s and early 1900s found American fashionistas wearing elaborate hats boasting real bird plumage, and in some cases, entire stuffed birds. In 1886, writer Douglas Brinkley wrote that “more than 5 million birds were being massacred yearly to satisfy the booming North American millinery trade.” By the 1890s, environmentalists were growing indignant at this blase lack of respect for birds’ lives, and thus the great argument, which would last decades, erupted between those who rallied to protect the birds and those to whom fashion reigned supreme. One expert estimated that approximately 67 bird species were endangered because of these trends. Eventually, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 put an end to this craze, and the birds were left alone.

FEATHERS IN COMFORT Down is the soft fluff found under the plumage of waterfowl.

A single cluster of down looks a little like a dandelion head. Unlike dandelion, however, down clusters can last for years when properly cared for.

Since larger birds have larger clusters of down, the larger the bird, the better the down. That’s why geese generally have better down than ducks, and even among geese, the bigger the better! Why is down bedding so popular? Goose down is remarkable in that it allows moisture to escape while trapping warm air pockets at the same time.

Hey, kids! Here’s your chance to show off what you made! Did you have fun in the snow or the fall leaves? Did you construct something special with Magna Tiles or other building toys? We’d love to show everyone how creative Monsey kids are! Please email or mail your picture to The Monsey View.

It can’t be! We put so much work into planning this event! How were they able to figure out what we were thinking?

I’m so excited! The conversion event is taking place right now!

What? The event was canceled?! Who? The antimissionary organization?!

I’ll show them yet!

Why are you bothering me here?

What’s wrong with him?

I’m c..cl… cleaning…

And now the anti-missionary organization is onto us, and we’ll have to change our address… What will we do now without cash?

Tom from the chocolate factory promised me that if that man in the wheelchair converts, he’ll sponsor extensive activities.

My only choice now is to request money from the central missionary organization in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Recap: Gavriel sharply reprimands Avraham when he realizes the boy tried to follow him again. Finally wanting to share his suspicions, Avraham finds his father too occupied with trying to cancel the rescheduled missionary event.
