(Re: What’s Baking in Monsey?, Issue 143) As a long-time customer of Zishe’s Bakery, I would like to add some information to the bakery stats featured last week. As youngsters, my children were allergic to soy and eggs, and we’d go to Zishe’s for their egg-free and soy-free rugelach, which tasted great! (Many of my guests and my other non-allergic children actually preferred them over the standard rugelach.) I have one child whose birthday is very close to Pesach, when I couldn’t bake anything without eggs or soy, and this was a real birthday treat. Zishe’s regular rugelach, too, are noteworthy, as they are trans-fat-free with mostly palm ingredients, which makes them so much lighter than other rugelach, which are heavier and loaded with soy/margarine ingredients. I want to personally thank Zishe’s for their allergy-friendly bakery items. A Grateful Customer

(Inbox, Issue 143) Dear Reader in Favor of Goat’s Milk, I would like to point out some inaccurate information that your letter contains, so that mothers don’t make a mistake based on it. Goat’s milk is most certainly not recommended for infants under six months of age. I will quote KellyMom, one of the largest resources on baby and toddler feeding practices, who writes: “Goat’s milk is no more appropriate to give to a baby than cow’s milk. If you need to supplement… formulas are a more nutritionally complete product.” Additionally, goat’s milk is high in sodium, chloride and potassium, which is too high of a renal load for such young babies and can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia and other health issues. She also points out that while mothers used this milk back in the day before formula was invented, the infant mortality rate was much higher then

as well. So just because your ancestors have been doing it does not mean it is okay. Additionally, just because something worked for you still doesn’t make it safe for you or anyone else. I know many people who smoke and are totally healthy, but can you say that smoking is safe? Absolutely not! You claim it’s very similar to mother’s milk, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. I hope mothers research what they feed their babies and make an educated decision instead of taking a letter for what it is, written by someone without any credentials. R.N.
FRESH OUT OF THE OVEN (Re: It’s Baking Time, Issue 143) I picked up The Monsey View a few hours ago, and I already have the delicious blondie-brownie, which you featured this week, sitting on my counter. It was really simple to make, and my twelve-year-old daughter did it all by herself. We appreciate all your recipes and that you keep them simple so children can enjoy them too, and we thank you for an enjoyable read every week. C.F.
As a home economics teacher, I am very particular when it comes to recipes and the instructions for making them. I must say that your paper makes the grade. The instructions are always so clear and the results simply delicious. I have my son bring me your paper from Monsey every week, as I don’t want to

miss any of them. This week, I tried the meltaway cake. Since I didn’t have three loaf pans, I baked the entire recipe in one larger pan, and baked it for longer. While the cake was delicious, it would have definitely been more perfect had I followed the original instructions. Thank you and keep up your great work. A Boro Park Teacher
I made the blondie-brownie cake featured last week. It came out beautiful, but I think there was a mistake with the cocoa. I put in only 3 tablespoons, as it seems to me like the cup that it calls for is way too much. A Reader THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: The recipe actually calls for ¼ cup cocoa, and it was mistakenly listed as 1 cup. We apologize for any inconvenience the typo may have caused.

REUSING THE STARTER (Re: The Sweet Labor of Sourdough Bread, Issue 143) I wanted to comment on how much I enjoy Blimy Wassertheil’s health features. It’s so nice to have these complicated methods down to a science, which enables us to try these health foods in our home. I was so excited to see the feature on sourdough bread, as I’m aware of its health benefits, but I was nervous to actually experiment with it. Before I try my hand at it, I’d love to know the following: If I want to continuously bake the bread, do I have to start from scratch each time, or can I reuse a starter or use part of the actual bread as a starter? And if it can be reused, how long can a starter be good for? R.K.
@fraidylichter
48 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 18, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
BLIMY WASSERTHEIL RESPONDS: The great thing about a sourdough starter is that it can last almost forever. When the starter has fully matured, store 2 cups in a clean jar in the fridge. Once a week (or when you want to bake), remove your sourdough starter from the fridge, bring it to room temperature and feed it, stirring well. Leave it to grow and become active again 12 to 24 hours before using it in a recipe, until it’s double in size. (Depending on how long the starter has been in the fridge, it sometimes needs more than one feeding.) Remember to put 2 cups back into the fridge for the next week. Happy and healthy baking!

Dear Basya, I overdid it this Pesach and really let loose (I gained over 7 pounds!), and now I regret it. Right after Pesach I got back on track, but the process is so slow! Is there a liquid diet or a cleanse that you recommend just for a few days to reset my body? Once I lose the few pounds, I will definitely go back to my healthy, balanced plan. Please advise. Signed, Regretful
CHAPTER 2
Dear Regretful, You are asking a great question. It seems like a brilliant quick fix to detox for a few days and get rid of all the extra calories that you consumed, after which you can return to moderate eating and steady weight loss. While in theory this makes sense, in reality this almost never works. I have found time and time again that the fastest and most consistent solution for losing extra yom tov weight is simply getting right back on plan. You can choose to skip heavy snacks in favor of lighter fare such as fruit, but do not cleanse and do not drastically cut calories, even for a few days. It simply doesn’t work. While you will lose a few pounds quickly, most of it will be water weight. Additionally, you will be too
54 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 18, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
hungry to switch over to a moderate plan once you are done cleansing and are likely to binge instead, and gain the few pounds back. You may also potentially trigger a binge/ cleanse cycle. Additionally, eating so few calories will slow your metabolism so that everything you eat post-cleanse will simply stick to your waistline. Your best bet is to continue eating according to your plan, leaving off any unnecessary extras such as treats or unnecessary fruits. After a few weeks, the extra calories will be gone, and you will be back on your weight-loss journey. Do not try to speed up the process. Best of luck! Parshas Tazria-Metzora

FAIGY AND TZIPPY had been eagerly looking forward to the Bais Yaakov fundraising raffle event. The night afforded them the opportunity to get out together and enjoy good food and a fun time while supporting their daughters’ school. And who knew? Maybe they would win something, too. Each woman paid generously for dozens of tickets, and they walked from prize to prize trying to decide what to try for. “Which package do you want?” asked Tzippy. “Hmmm,” pondered Faigy. “Maybe the linen set and the men’s package for Heshy. What about you?” “I have eyes for only one prize — the sheitel!” replied Tzippy. “My Esty’s chasunah is coming up, and I would love to have a new sheitel.” Just then, Faigy excused herself to go greet another woman who came in, and Tzippy poured all of her tickets into the box for the sheitel. Tzippy was on her way back to the table she and Faigy had selected when something caught her eye. Was that Faigy, heading for the sheitel package behind her back? No, she thought, it couldn’t be! But it was. Tzippy watched in horror as Faigy put all of her tickets in for the sheitel as well. Faigy returned to the table as if nothing had just happened, as if she had not just betrayed her childhood best friend. Tzippy wanted to say something, but Faigy started talking as if nothing had changed. Tzippy felt as if the room were spinning. She couldn’t stay another minute. “I’m not feeling well,” blurted Tzippy. “I have to go!” And in a flash, Tzippy stumbled out of the event into the cool night air. When she returned home, tears streaming down her face, she immediately told Moshe what had happened. “Are you sure you saw her put her tickets in for the sheitel. Maybe she put her tickets in for the next prize, and it only looked like—” “Moshe, I know what I saw,” she cried. “And that was right after I told her I wanted the sheitel for the chasunah.” As Tzippy sobbed on the couch, Moshe became pretty angry himself. “You know, Faigy’s husband Heshy called me recently looking to place a large order with my company. I told him I would give him a big break, but forget it. I think
60 / THE MONSEY VIEW
we should cool down this friendship and move on.” Just then, the doorbell rang. Moshe went to answer the door and spoke for a few moments with the visitor. Finally, he called out, “Tzippy, it’s for you.” Tzippy tried to dry her tears, but it was useless. “Can you take a message for me? I don’t think I can come.” “I think you should come. There’s something here you will want to see.” Tzippy wiped her face and came to the door. There, on her doorstep, was Faigy with a huge smile on her face — and a gift certificate for a sheitel in her hand. “Surprise!” she called out. “When I heard you didn’t have a new sheitel for the chasunah, I decided to sneak over and put all of my tickets in for you for the sheitel, and guess what? I won! I mean, you won.” Faigy’s smile was as big as if she had won a big prize for herself. Beaming with joy, Faigy handed Tzippy the gift certificate, and with tears flowing anew, Tzippy embraced her best friend. It is well-known that one would develop tzara’as for speaking lashon hara and motzi shem ra (slander), but this truth is borne out in the beginning words of Parshas Metzora. Parshas Metzora begins, “Zos tih’yeh toras hametzora… — This shall be the law of the person afflicted with tzara’as…”(Vayikra 14:2). The Gemara in Arachin 15b states that “toras hametzora” is a contraction of the words “toras hamotzi shem ra.” The Chofetz Chaim, in Be’er Mayim Chaim, writes that a person who speaks lashon hara violates the mitzvas asei of “B’tzedek tishpot es amisecha” — judging favorably. In the story above, Tzippy failed to be dan l’kaf zechus when she saw what appeared to be a betrayal by her best friend. Tzippy’s husband tried to be dan l’kaf zechus by suggesting it might have been a mistake, but he quickly succumbed as well. What could have happened if Faigy had not won? A lifelong friendship plus a business relationship might have been destroyed. Failing to give the benefit of the doubt can have astounding consequences, chalilah. May we all strive to judge each other favorably and refrain from speaking lashon hara and motzi shem ra, and in that zechus, help usher in the geulah sheleimah speedily in our days.

No-Fuss Supper For the Busy Mother
Recipes and food styling: Leah Stern Photo credit: C. Tarkeiltaub Over the years, I have learned that the term “simple supper is extremely relative. This selection of chicken cutlet dinners is made from scratch and needs minor preparation time and minimal cleanup. However, when situations deem even this as too much, feel free to resort to instant noodle soup and sandwiches.
Correction: The BlondieBrownie cake featured in Issue 143 mistakenly listed 1 cup of dark cocoa for the brownie, whereas the recipe only calls for 1/4 cup cocoa. We apologize for the error.

For this dish, I use one dressing for both the french fries and the cutlets, and the leftover triples as a dipping sauce. I like to use homemade crushed pretzels, but store-bought pretzel crumbs, though finer in consistency, will do just fine. Potatoes can be peeled and cut as early as the evening before and placed in a bowl of water. Bake a pan of seasoned string beans along with the chicken for a complete main dish.
INGREDIENTS 4 chicken cutlets
Crushed pretzels
6 large potatoes
DRESSING 1 cup mayonnaise
2-3 crushed garlic
3 T. oil
½ tsp. black pepper
2 T. mustard
1½ tsp. salt
1½ T. honey
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. Combine all dressing ingredients in a 16-ounce container and whisk until very well mixed 3. Cut potatoes french-fry style. Place in a plastic bag with ½ cup dressing, and combine until coated. 4. Place potatoes in a shallow toaster lined with parchment paper, laying them single file. Sprinkle with additional salt. 5. Cover with foil and bake for 50 minutes. 6. Dip cutlets in dressing and coat in crushed pretzels. 7. After the potatoes have baked for 50 minutes, move them to one side of the pan, oil the other side and place cutlets alongside potatoes. Cover and bake for 20-25 minutes. 8. Turn over the cutlets and leave the pan uncovered after 10 minutes.

French Fries and Pretzel Cutlets
VEGETABLES
Roasted VegetableCutlet Bake
2 large or 4 small beets 4 large sweet potatoes ¼ cup light olive oil ⅓ cup orange juice 2 T. honey 1 tsp. salt Dash of white pepper
CHICKEN 4 chicken cutlets 2 T. olive oil 1 tsp. vinegar 1 T. honey 1 T. corn starch 1 clove garlic, crushed ½ tsp. paprika ½ tsp. salt Dash of white pepper
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. Cube beets and sweet potatoes and place in a lined shallow roaster pan. Beets should go at the end of the pan, sweet potatoes in the middle, and about a quarter of the pan should be left empty for the chicken. 3. Mix marinade ingredients in a bag and drizzle over vegetables. This dinner is full of vibrant colors, flavor and nutrition. The bottoms of the sweet potatoes will take on a crimson hue from the beets, but the look of the cutlets won’t be altered.
4. Cover pan with foil and bake for 1½ hour.
To accommodate a hectic afternoon schedule, prepare the cubed sweet potatoes in a bowl of water and the cubed beets in a plastic bag beforehand.
6. After 1 hour, add chicken to the pan of vegetables and bake for 25 minutes, removing foil from pan for the last 10 minutes.
5. While vegetables are roasting, cube chicken cutlets and place in a Ziploc bag with all marinade ingredients and allow to marinate.

The Individuality of a Child
A
A chassid once came to the Nesivos Shalom, zt”l, and asked, “Can the Rebbe give me good advice? What is the best way to be mechanech my children?” “I will tell you,” said the Rebbe. “The best way to educate your children is not to disturb the way Hashem Yisborach chooses to be mechanech them. Don’t forget, the Ribono Shel Olam is the Father of all the children of Klal Yisroel. He is their mechanech. Our job is to help the process go smoothly and not to try to push things our way, to force the child to fit a mold that we created.” The kuntres Nesivei Chinuch explains that everyone today is convinced that they are the greatest mechanech. However, our ideas related to chinuch are really taken from our own hearts, according to our own desires, natures and the social pressure from the people around us. This kind of chinuch is focused on externals and doesn’t influence the child’s p’nimius; when the child encounters a real nisayon, the chinuch does not help him. Like the story of the cats that were trained to be waiters but abandoned their tricks as soon as they saw mice, such children, whose chinuch is based only on externals, quickly become lost when they encounter difficulties. Shlomo Hamelech said: “Chanoch lanaar al pi darko” (Mishlei 22). We must help every child grow to be a real oved Hashem according to their specific nature. This requires us

selves and our children represents our relationship with our Father in Heaven. In the sefer Shem MiShmuel, Parshas Ki Setzei, it is written that the ben sorer u’morer is chayev, because the Torah knows his end daas, that eventually he will become a rasha. The Gemara Sanhedrin (88b) writes that even if he was warned and sinned again, if the parents want to forgive him and not bring him to beis din, he is forgiven. Why is this so? The Shem MiShmuel explains that teshuvah of a Yid means that he reconnects to the holy chain of our forefathers. If there is a connection, the teshuvah will remain strong. Therefore, when the parents forgive him, they give him an opportunity to reconnect to the holy chain. As parents, we must make sure that our connection with our children always remains strong and open, so that the feeling of that powerful connection with us, and consequently with Hashem Yisborach, will remain with them their entire life. maalos and chesronos will be. All these exact details are necessary to allow us to fulfill the purpose that we were created for. Take davening, for example. It is beautiful to see a child who comes to shul and stands in one place for the entire davening, praying with full kavanah. What nachas to observe such a sight! This child’s behavior may be the result of the parent’s personal example, but it may also not be to the parent’s credit at all and simply the result of the nature that the child received. However, there are many children who don’t want to go to shul at that age, and there is nothing wrong with them. They may simply not be mature enough yet, or their nature makes it difficult for them to stand in one place for long periods of time. With other children, the cause may be difficulty in reading or problems with their vision. Each child requires individual guidance that is dependent on his way. When parents make sure to connect with their children, practice the aleph-beis with them and play with them from a young age, they can be aware of the child’s needs and of any potential problems. Many educators explain that children must develop a feeling for davening, and when a child is forced to daven too much before he is ready, he may come to resent davening when he is older. In truth, the right approach to this issue is to make the davening exciting in order to arouse the child’s interest. Parents can offer the child sweets or other incentives, and this will help the child have positive associations with davening and going to shul. We can also tell our children enthusiastically that they will give so much pleasure to Hashem Yisborach and to us when they daven nicely. This approach will not only increase the child’s excitement, but will also help Hashem become a constant reality in their
80 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 18, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
minds. Of course, if the child still refuses to go to shul, it’s best to let it go and continue to daven that he develop a real tshukah to Hashem. We can keep broaching the subject periodically while never losing our trust in the child for a minute. This trust in our children and in what they can do and become builds their confidence and helps them believe in themselves. Additionally, by showing them what we value most, we help build the importance of davening and going to shul in the mind of the child. In one of the chedarim in Yerushalayim, the menahel succeeded in influencing the children to each daven a long Shemoneh Esrei. How? He told the children that their break will be as long as their Shemoneh Esrei. In that way, he was able to connect the Shemoneh Esrei davening to something positive in their minds. Rebbe Moshe Kobrine once said on the posuk, “T’chilah l’mikra’ei kodesh…,” that if we are looking for what to work on first in order to grow in kedushah, we should begin with Shabbos, because Shabbos is the “beginning of what is called kodesh.” Therefore, Shabbos is the beginning from where we can build up the values of kodesh in our children. One way to do this is to involve our children in Erev Shabbos preparations. For example, when mothers prepare the Shabbos food, they can encourage their children to peel potatoes and help out in an exciting manner. Parents can also tell the children that the more they help, the bigger will be the treat that will await them on Shabbos. This and many other creative methods can be used to involve the children and create a positive, exciting atmosphere in the home. In the next article, we will discuss other ideas for creating a positive Shabbos atmosphere and building strong values in our children.

4 Reason Why Counting Calories Is Stopping You Lose Weight! “I absolutely hate counting calories. I tried it. It lasted about 2 days. What can I do?” Shmuly asked frustratingly.
Amount of calories from their meal?
Yes, weight loss is about the amount of calories you consume relative to the amount you use up but, calorie counting isn't the only way you can lose weight.
It varies based on the health of each individuals digestive system.
The answer is NO.
2. Calorie changes from apple to apple

If you enjoy counting calories and it works for you then keep on counting! But… if you are like me -- someone that doesn't really fancy going through a math equation every time I want to eat supper, then allow me to explain further. 1. It isn't about the calorie content of the food. It is about how many calories we can extract from the foods that we are eating.
We don't know how much you use up. Yes, we can get an estimate by your age, gender, height, weight and activity levels. But this is guessing at best. The amount of calories your body uses up depends on many factors. Factors including: Diet history. What your weight is derived from. Stress levels,. By focusing on calorie counting alone you can find it very hard to be satisfied with your diet. You may always feel hungry. This can make staying on your diet virtually impossible. Although we just finish discussing how inaccurate calorie counting can be it isn't without value. In fact it is quite a powerful tool… when used correctly. If you would ever want to go ahead and try counting calories then here is how you do it correctly: Determine the amount of calories you want to consume. You can do this by using the guesstimating tools available with a click of a button. Track your calories. The best and easiest way is to prepare your meals the day before and calculate the calorie content while preparing. It was too easy, really.
It had taken only a simple call to the bank’s unsuspecting security department. Claiming to be a new guard, he’d requested a replacement uniform for the night shift — the original was supposedly torn and unwearable. And now he was standing at the airport, sporting a crisp uniform that identified him as a security guard of Bean State National Bank. Near him stood a dolly, outfitted with a large mailbag, waiting to swallow the day’s earnings. With nary more than a “good evening,” at least thirty airport employees dropped envelopes and bags into Frank’s pouch, everyone accepting the sign on the dropbox for what it was. NIGHT DEPOSIT BOX OUT OF ORDER, the sign proclaimed. PLEASE MAKE DEPOSITS WITH SECURITY OFFICER. And they did. Oh, how they did. Later that night, Abagnale tallied up the results of his night’s effort. The cash totaled $62,800; the checks he wouldn’t even bother
with. Frank chuckled to himself, wondering how people had fallen for his ruse. After all, how can a dropbox be out of order? Quickly packing his bags, Frank Abagnale headed back to the airport and hopped effortlessly aboard a plane, heading toward his next locale. Heading toward his next scam.
THE GROWNUP CHILD Raised in Westchester County, Frank Abagnale had a stable upbringing until the age of 16, when a family tragedy caused him to flee his childhood home and head for New York City. For a while, Frank worked as a delivery boy for various stores, but the pay and the hours were scarce. Nobody wanted to give a 16-year-old top dollar. Barely scraping by on his small income, Abagnale decided there must be a way to earn more money. Remembering how his classmates used to tease that he looked more like a teacher than a student, Frank decided that he’d up his age. Altering his driver’s license to bear a birth date ten years prior to his actual entrance into this world, Frank Abagnale went from 16 to 26 in a matter of minutes. The change in age brought about increased wages, but the earnings
were still meager. And so he began dabbling in bank fraud. It started out with writing bad checks, pretending he had money in the bank when his account was actually dry. From there it progressed to all sorts of swindles. One of Abagnale’s tricks was to print deposit slips identical to the ones used by the bank he was targeting. Instead of the bank’s routing number, however, the digits on the slip were for his own account. He would subtly mix his slips into the pile of authentic ones, causing depositors’ money to be routed straight into his pocket. Over time, Frank learned the ins and outs of banking and and even progressed to printing fraudulent checks. With his smooth tongue, effortless self-confidence and his youthful lack of fear, young Abagnale was able to cash many a bad check, the tellers none the wiser. Occasionally, though, an especially astute banker would give him the once-over, and then lean in for a closer look. Not everyone would cash his checks, and Frank didn’t like that.
a hotel. And I’d be able to travel the world for free. The next day he placed a phone call to the executive offices of Pan Am Airlines, having no idea what he was going to say. When a secretary answered, he quickly decided to ask for the purchasing department. Claiming to be a pilot with the company for seven years, Frank explained that he’d sent his uniform for dry cleaning through his New York hotel and that the cleaners had misplaced it. “I have a flight in about four hours,” he said, explaining that his spare uniform was in San Francisco, which he proclaimed to be his home base. The worker on the other
end of the line instructed Frank to head to the Fifth Avenue supplier Pan Am used for their uniforms. Frank was given an authentic Pan Am pilot’s uniform, no questions asked. Only one problem remained: He was still missing an ID tag. Frank was able to locate the company that produced Pan Am’s ID tags and contacted them, claiming to be the purchasing agent for a large company. He said he was only in town for the day and requested a meeting for that very afternoon. When he arrived, Abagnale discussed design options with the salesperson and commented that his company was fond of Pan Am’s tag design. He requested that a sample ID be created using Pan Am’s format and his own picture — to take home to his company for approval, of course. Happy to oblige, the salesperson set the machines in motion, and young Frank walked out with a beautiful plastic ID card. There was, however, one setback: Pan Am’s logo and name had not been printed on the card, despite the format being the same. It was also impossible to write or print on the plastic tag. At that moment, Frank believed his plan was doomed to fail. Anyone could see that his ID was fraudulent without the Pan Am logo and lettering. And then the eureka moment
SKYWAY MAN If I’d have a pilot uniform, they’d always cash my checks, Frank thought to himself as he watched a group of flight attendants and their pilot exit

FRANK ABAGNALE’S TIPS FOR ID SAFETY DON’T USE DEBIT CARDS! Debit cards are linked directly to your bank account, and if someone steals the number, your account can be drained in minutes, the funds never to be seen again. Debit cards also do not adequately build credit, which is a must in this generation.
DO USE CREDIT CARDS Credit cards are the safest form of currency, allowing one to contest and refute charges in case of ID theft. Even a bill of a million dollars can be refuted!
LEAVE IT BLANK! Some type of form requesting your Social Security number? Just leave it blank. You don’t want your number to fall into the wrong hands. It is extremely complicated to change a Social Security number, even if a fraudster has wreaked havoc with it.
SIDE SHOTS ONLY Never share or post a picture of your full face (even if your rabbi says you may!). Facial recognition software can link your face to every piece of personal data accessible within seconds. Even with only your name and birthday, talented scammers can steal your ID.
CARE FOR THE KIDS While the world is especially concerned about elderly ID theft, it is actually young children who are most at risk. The ID of a twoyear-old, for instance, is worth more on the black market than that of an older person. Why? Because scammers will have more time to use the ID before anyone realizes what has happened. Two-yearolds don’t typically check their credit scores...
DOUBLE-CHECK THE CHECK A new scam is happening now with the aid of check-scanning software crooks install on their smartphones. If someone requests a check, handles it and then decides he’d rather a different form of payment, be very wary. He may have scanned and deposited your check without your realizing, and you might end up giving him double the amount planned.
KNOW THE SOURCE Business owners need to be aware that almost every security breach comes from employees either doing something they weren’t supposed to or not doing something they should have. Educate your employees about malware and careful clicking. Perhaps even test their integrity by leaving material or USBs around marked “Confidential” and see who tries to access the info. A person who tries is a person you don’t want working for you.

occurred, right as Frank passed a hobby shop. Walking inside, he headed for the model airplanes. There she was: a Pan Am beauty. Paying for the hobby kit, Abagnale rushed home to open the box. Discarding the airplane pieces, he searched for his solution and found it: plastic decals, featuring Pan Am’s logo and lettering. Sticking them onto his ID tag, his uniform was now complete. Dressed as a pilot, Frank Abagnale went to La Guardia airport and haunted the eateries, trying to get a feel for flight crew jargon and, of course, to figure out how to actually board an airplane for free. “Hey Pan Am, what are you doing in La Guardia?” a pilot from a different airline called out. Mumbling an excuse about personal business, Frank realized he’d made a mistake. Pan Am only flies out of JFK. With a few more bumbles under his belt, Abagnale headed to JFK and tried to board his first flight. “Is the jumpseat available?” Frank asked, as he’d seen other pilots do. Assured that it was, Frank climbed onto the plane without paying a dime. It would be the first of many flights in the years to come. Between the ages of 16 and 18, it is estimated that Abagnale flew over a million miles on over 250 free flights. He also visited 26 different countries, with Pan Am covering both his lodging and food, unbeknownst to them. With his combination of rare ingenuity and an obvious lack of scruples, Frank quickly became one of the world’s most wanted men. Every agent near and far had his eye out for the man they dubbed the “Skyway Man.”

down in Georgia. On his rental application, Abagnale claimed to be a pediatrician, fearing that a background check would result in a call to Pan Am if he claimed to be a pilot. As luck would have it, a real
doctor lived near Frank, and after befriending him, the doctor recommended Frank for a supervisory position in a hospital. Abagnale accepted the position and remained there for 11 months. It wasn’t difficult, as the residents did basically all the work. He just had to oversee everything. He did, however, spend an awful lot of time in the storage closet where he kept medical tomes hidden to be able to look up any terminology that
confounded him. Frank only realized that he was gambling with lives when a “blue baby” almost coded, due to Abagnale’s failure to realize that the child was deprived of oxygen. It was time to move on. Between the ages of 16 and 21, Frank impersonated various types of workers, including the aforementioned guard, pilot and pediatrician, as well as a professor and a lawyer. He even passed the bar exams on his third try despite having never formally studied law. Throughout this time, his aliases frequently contained variants of Frank or Robert, using both as either a first or last name, perhaps to leave his “calling card” behind — a tease for the FBI agents on his trail. In all, Abagnale swindled private citizens and even large companies for millions of dollars. But as they say, nothing lasts forever.
FLYING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION “I always knew I would get caught,” Frank Abagnale said in a speech. “Only a fool would

think otherwise.” The law finally caught up to him in France, where he was imprisoned for six months before being extradited to Sweden, where he served another term. Abagnale then managed to escape a landing airplane transporting him to the U.S. for imprisonment, though he was captured soon after. Even in prison, Frank’s wheels were turning, and he managed to convince the guards that he was an undercover FBI agent and not a real inmate. Of their own accord, the guards opened the doors and allowed Abagnale to walk freely away from prison. Finally, Frank was recaptured and sentenced to twelve years in prison, though he’d served less than five when he agreed to work with the FBI in outing con men like himself. Somewhere along the line, Abagnale grew older and wiser and came to realize the follies of his youth. Though he’d stolen millions of dollars, he’d still
96 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 18, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
been a child who’d cried himself to sleep at night from loneliness. As a hurting boy, he’d thought little of how he was harming others. Over time, though, the guilt caught up with him and became a burden that he carried with him daily. He became passionate about anti-fraud safeguards and dedicated himself to wholeheartedly working with the FBI to help protect individual and government monies. Eventually, he became a full-fledged FBI agent and has worked there for over 40 years. His eldest son is also an FBI agent. Acknowledging the immorality of his past, Abagnale turned down three presidential pardons, saying a paper can never erase his crimes. He is a prime example of how a person can use his talents either to build or destroy. His story is also one that proves that no matter how far a person has gone, one can still make a full turn and fly in the opposite direction — no airplane required.

With a company name like Parnassah Points, what can go wrong? Alliterations are harmless and heimish, and if the guy on the phone uses words like shtark and gantze parsha, you just trust him. You know those men in shul who make a living off credit cards? They just have the know-how in getting points, converting them to cash, and of course, they’ll all assure you that it’s totally legitimate. I’m not one of those. Maybe I was once a bit intrigued at the idea of an easy dollar, but nothing more than that. So when a local circular advertised Parnassah Points, a Lakewoodbased company knowledgeable in credit card points and earnings, I called out of pure curiosity and spoke to someone named Mr. Chaimowitz. For a small percentage, he explained, they apply for the cards for you, arrange the spending and convert the points into cash. “R’ Duvid, I’m telling you, the gantze Amex parsha is a gift from Shamayim! It’s made for us Yidden to help us get through yom tov. You and your rebbetzin can sign up, and you’ll earn up to $3,000 for opening the cards.” The thought of the endlessly long yom tov shopping list sitting on our counter suddenly didn’t seem so daunting anymore. I worked hard to earn a living, but yom tov with a family of girls can be expensive. I wanted to make sure there was nothing shady with the business. I asked him many questions, took
names of references, grilled everyone I knew about credit card points, and signed up, convinced I was doing a great thing. Three months later I got a check for $3,000 in the mail. I definitely enjoyed the check and forgot about Parnassah Points. Until the next year. Mr. Chaimowitz called me every year at the same time with new offers of greater earnings and easy cash. I always declined. Five years after that initial call, it was erev yom tov once again. This
time he promised even better earnings. If the rebbe and rebbetzin would both sign up, we’d earn $2,500 per person. For some reason, the rebbe and rebbetzin titles grated. “I do it all the time. Trust me,” he said. Famous last words. For good measure, he threw in, “With Hashem’s help, of course.” I discussed it with my wife. We both agreed that it was the perfect time for some extra cash, and I called Mr. Chaimowitz back. He needed our Social Security numbers, dates of birth and other personal information. Two weeks later, one of my wife’s cards was declined, and Mr. Chaimowitz told me to call Amex and tell them that I was the one opening all the new cards. I wasn’t thrilled, but what’s one phone call for $5,000? The Amex rep asked me which business name the card was under. I had no clue what the question meant and what I was supposed to answer. I hiccupped and disconnected. Unnerved, I called Parnassah Points again, and Mr. Chaimowitz told me to call Amex and inform them that I authorized Parnassah Points to handle all my cards and that all calls, emails and letters should go directly to them. A few weeks passed, and my wife’s card still wasn’t working. I tried calling Mr. Chaimowitz, the office. No answer. Amex called again to verify some numbers, and I

pushed them off. I told them that they caught me at a bad time, or that the connection was bad. Finally, Mr. Chaimowitz called back and apologized. He’d been out of town for a few weeks. Nothing was overly suspicious yet, but every time I saw an Amex envelope in my mailbox, my stomach twisted. By now, they’d opened about eight cards per person, but two or three of my wife’s cards weren’t working. Mr. Chaimowitz blamed me and yelled that I hadn’t authorized him properly. He didn’t even listen when I explained that he hadn’t given me a company name. Then the letters started coming. And didn’t stop. Amex sent letters stating that I owed them huge sums of money. I, who had never had any debt, had an accrued balance of $50,000. Within a week, they froze all my credit cards. There was a $16,000 balance on one card, $5,000 on another, $9,000 on a third. I stopped opening the envelopes. My fingers were numb from redialing Parnassah Points so many times. I texted, emailed, called, yelled myself hoarse — to no one. Chuna Pinkus*, a good friend of mine, was extremely savvy in these areas. He tried finding different ways to contact Mr. Chaimowitz (if that was even his name). He used all of his detective skills to find more phone numbers. But nothing. Only an unclear voicemail. And a very large debt on my shoulders. I took the only route I knew. I called Amex, apologized for any inconvenience and told them I had to dispute every single charge on my cards. Problem was, I didn’t have any credit card statements, and there is no way to dispute charges without statements. After tearful pleading, Amex sent me the statements. Most charges were expensive business class airline tickets under random names. I worked hours upon hours to dispute the numerous charges. This time, with Hashem’s miraculous help, Amex accepted the claim and cancelled every single charge. They closed all my cards and issued new ones. Mr. Chaimowitz’s unclear voicemail is still there, thousands of my emails are still clogging some inbox, but I haven’t heard from him since. This is the end of my story, so far, but there’s a guy out there who still has my Social Security number, date of birth and personal information. And he’s not a trustworthy man; trust me on this one. I might never know the full story. Did he plan on gypping me? Did he resort to theft as a desperate measure? Did he steal $50,000 intentionally? Did he plan this five years in advance? I have no idea. Honestly, I’m at fault. Based on some yeshivishe lingo, I gave a complete stranger all my private information for the promise of a few dollars. I did earn some points, though, in life experience!

IT SEEMS THAT EVERY FEW DAYS we hear about a new data breach involving our private financial information. Worse yet, we may have experienced identity theft ourselves or have had it happen to a close friend or relative. While we may think that only people with high incomes or abundant credit are the ones who need to worry about this issue, it is not so. The truth is that credit card fraud (where the criminal uses a stolen credit card or stolen credit card number to make fraudulent purchases) is only second to the number-one use of stolen identity, which is to file a fraudulent tax return or to illegally gain employment with a stolen Social Security number. Many of us in Rockland own a home or condominium, which affords us tax benefits when we file our taxes. When someone steals another’s identity and files a fraudulent tax return, this theft must be corrected with the IRS, which may delay the refund until it is resolved. There have been many articles written about how to protect oneself while online. Also, there are numerous websites dedicated to properly safeguarding a PC or smartphone. However, not everyone uses a mobile device or goes online to use the internet. Does that mean that not having or using a mobile device or computer keeps private information safe? Unfortunately, no. Non-tech methods of identity theft have been used prior to the first personal computers.
106 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 18, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
What can be done to minimize these risks? Here are some thing to consider:
Is your mailbox safe and secure? An open, unlocked mailbox is the easiest place for a potential thief to steal bank statements, credit card mailings and healthcare statements. These documents contain tremendous amounts of personal information and often go unprotected during Shabbos. A post office–approved locking mailbox can be purchased locally at both Home Depot or Lowes for under $100.
Do you have a lockbox at home? Mail or other private documents left in plain sight in one’s home can be a temptation to a stranger, such as a repairman you do not fully know. Even if the repairman is known and trusted, they may have brought a helper who is unknown to you. Keep your documents and mail out of sight until you can dispose of them properly.
Are your old documents being properly destroyed? Do you own a shredder? While it is the computer hackers who receive all the attention these days, don’t forget that one’s trash often reveals many useful things to a thief. Properly destroying documents is one of the easiest and often overlooked method of protecting one’s private information.
Consider the steps above and other security precautions that are readily available. Thieves always look for the weakest link in defenses. In the end, be careful and remember that you have an active role in securing your private information and protecting your identity.

Your family knows you by your nickname; the neighbor’s kids, perhaps by surname; and your cleaning lady may refer to you simply as “missus,” — but who are you to the U.S. at large? In a population of millions, where there’s so much chance for citizens to have common birth dates, names and ages — fertile ground for mix-ups in the most crucial matters — the nine-digit Social Security number assigned to citizens ensures that identity can be proven.
FACT OR
FICTION?
The Social Security number system was developed in order to identify U.S. citizens.
Fiction. This almost-foolproof identifier was originally created for the sole purpose of tracking one’s income for Social Security purposes, hence its name. It was 1936, and the U.S. was in the recovery stage from the Great Depression, FDR at its helm. One of the New Deal programs Roosevelt launched was Social Security. The first step in enabling the collection of Social Security was developing an infrastructure for tracking a given person’s income. After long months of work, decisions, debating, training employees and establishing facilities, the people of the U.S. would finally get their nine-digit numbers that would solve the identity crisis mentioned in a 1937 publication: “A recent news account states that Fred

The original forms were mailed to Baltimore, to top record on a random stack. the Bureau of Old-Age Benefit’s Records Office, and the post offices kept carbon copies to have on hand in case a replacement card was requested. Twenty-eight days after the initial distribution of applications, there were more than 22 million completed applications, and the number kept increasing from there.
FACT OR
FICTION?
As soon as Social Security was launched, citizens of all ages applied for a number. Fiction. Until 1986, people generally did not bother to apply before the age of 14, as they only needed a Social Security number for income-tracking purposes.
That changed in 1986, when parents were required to list the Social Security number for each dependent over the age of five for whom they wanted to claim a tax deduction. Prior to this act, the IRS had to rely on their trust in the parents, and hope they’re not claiming deductions for children who didn’t exist. (During the first year it emerged how much they indeed had been misled, as 7 million fewer minor dependents were claimed than the previous year!) In 1988, the threshold was lowered to two years, and in 1990 to one year. Today, since a Social Security number is required for tax purposes for any child, regardless of age, most parents apply for it while filling out the birth certificate application.

FACT OR
FICTION? It is not possible to receive a new Social Security number. Fiction, though only extreme situations will allow for that.
There are only a few conditions that allow for the request of a new Social Security number, such as when personal safety is involved, when sequential numbers assigned to family members are causing problems, when duplicates have been issued, or when identity theft continues to cause problems way past its having been discovered. In all of these cases, credible evidence, such as a police report, is required.

ATMs, or automated teller machines, are known by a slew of other names. In Canadian English, these machines are known as ABMs, or automated banking machines, while in England they’re known as cash machines, cash points or, rather oddly, as “holes in the wall.” Other terms include cash dispensers and bankomats.
Credit for the ATM generally goes to John Shepherd-Barron, who created the electronic ATM in 1967, and Donald Wetzel from the Docutel company, who invested in the development of the machine and produced, in 1969, the first ATM that was able to read the magnetic stripe on bank cards. However, the very first ATM was actually invented by Luther George Simjian. His mechanical machine was installed in 1939 by the City Bank of New York, later Citibank, but never took off for simple lack of demand. In 1973, over 2,000 ATMs were installed throughout the U.S., and that’s when these machines took off. However, they grew even more popular in 1977, when Citibank spent $100 million to install ATMs all over New York City. This tremendous gamble paid off the following winter when a blizzard hit the city, closing streets and banks. ATMs, however, remained open, and suddenly, America discovered their convenience.
Original electronic ATM machine
IN NUMBERS
There are approximately 425,000 working ATMs in the U.S., and 3 million ATMs worldwide — including two in Antarctica!
There are 10,000 possible fournumber pin combinations. The most common are 0000, 1111 and 1234, while the least common password is 8068.
About 52 percent of U.S. ATMs are owned by independent companies, with only the remaining 48 percent owned by financial institutions. Why is that? Because statistics show that after a business installs an ATM, sales shoot up by up to 20 percent!
The average ATM withdrawal is $60. 120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 18, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Most ATMs contain approximately $20,000 in cash, though some small business owners may choose to load their machines with only $5,000 or even less. However, ATMs located in high-traffic areas — such as airports, for instance — typically hold $100,000 in cash!
IN GOLD
If you’d have one guess to answer which country you think was first to install a gold-plated gold-dispensing machine, which country would you choose? United Arab Emirates, of course! The capital Abu Dhabi, with a population second only to Dubai, is home to the world’s first machine that dispenses items made of pure gold! Located in Emirates Palace hotel lobby, this machine dispenses 320 gold items, including 10-gram gold bars and customized gold coins.
Today there are 20 “gold ATMs” throughout the world, with the first U.S. machine installed in December 2010 in Boca Raton, Florida. These machines get updated every 10 minutes to keep their prices in line with current market value. IN CRIME
In 1993, a gang of local boys modified and installed an out-of-service ATM in a mall located in Manchester, Connecticut. The boys collected unsuspecting customers’ financial information, and they used that data to steal over $100,000 before finally being caught.
In 1996, a man by the name of Andrew Stone was convicted of stealing more than $1 million. How did he manage that? He pointed a high-definition camera at an easily accessible ATM, recorded customers’ information and pin numbers, and used that data to produce his own fake cards. He then used these at ATMs, withdrawing up to $10,000 an hour!
How to prevent thieves from walking (or rather driving) off with an ATM? ATM Tracker is a GPS security system that silently alerts local authorities when an ATM removal occurs, and then tracks its location. Another deterrent to thieves is an intelligent banknote neutralization system (IBNS), which sprays bills with ink when it detects a forceful attempt to retrieve cash. This ink very obviously marks the bills so they can be followed and tracked back to where they came from.

I must clarify what exactly is going on in Israel.
THE secretary should be finishing his workday now. I must get a hold of him before he leaves.
Okay, I have to go now. We’ll finish tomorrow. I’m rushing home.
I promised my son Jim that I’ll be home in time for his birthday party.
You’re not leaving, you hear me? There’s important work I need done right now!
Check all the figures, including all the funds for the factory that supports our activities in Israel.
The situation is awful. There are almost no reports of people converting, just a huge deficit from the failed factory. I must speak to Tom right away.
Recap: At the missionary headquarters in Brazil, everyone is frustrated with Tom and his inability to fund the activities in Israel with Matok Li Chocolate Factory.

SUPPORT REB SHAYELE’S TALMUD TORAH! In year 5778, more than 100 years after the passing of the Tzaddik Reb Shayele of Kerestir, our local town of Monsey is privileged to house a venerable Talmud Torah erected and maintained in Reb Shayele’s blessed memory. This Cheder is an exemplary institution, vaunted as a rising star among the many Mosdos of Torah and Chinuch serving New York’s Jewish communities. Under the guidance and leadership of pious Mechanchim and teachers, the school is led to exceptional standards, all to the satisfaction of dozes of parents who witness their children growing into fine, erliche Yidden. These skilled staff members are inspired by a single mission: to instill in the beautiful students a pride of Torah and a deep sense of Yiras Shomayim. There is no doubt that Reb Shayele looks down on his Talmud Torah, looking out for its success and rejoicing that until this very day, Jewish children are being raised thanks to his legendary influence and blessing. In anticipation of Reb Shayele’s yuhrtziet, the Cheder’s administration is promoting the rare opportunity to sponsor the Zechus of the Talmud Torah’sDining Room for the week or the day, thus fulfilling Reb Shayele’s lifelong wish of feeding young Torah scholars! How great is your merit when you serve food to the delightful Tinokos Shel Beis Rabbon of Reb Shayele’s cheder! As you secure the immense Zechus of supporting these learners, they retain the strength and mental clarity to immerse themselves in Torah and Mitzvos, which is sure to bring Reb Shayele’s blessings onto your own children and home.
