MONSEY HADLAKOS

A LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY

From The Monsey View

Dear Readers, Each night we count ‫ ספירת העומר‬in anticipation of the ‫ יום טוב‬of ‫קבלת התורה‬, the day in which we will fervently sing “‫וחיי עולם נטע בתוכינו‬.” Let’s explore how powerful these words are. Driving down Route 306, we reach a junction at Brick Church Road. The sight on either side may look similar, but their differences encompass everything worth living for. On the right, the cemetery announces: “Here are people lying in their graves, dead forever, never to get out.” On our left, the ‫ בית החיים‬speaks: “These people are here temporarily, waiting to awaken together with ‫אברהם יצחק ויעקב‬, together with all ‫ צדיקים‬and ‫נביאים‬, and with our ancestors, brothers and sisters, at ‫תחיית המתים‬.” How privileged we are to be part of such a people! How fortunate we are to merit eternal life — all because of the ‫ תורה‬and its ‫ מצוות‬that ‫ הקב"ה‬gave us. We are to rejoice on the ‫ יום טוב‬of ‫ שבועות‬by realizing the ‫ חשיבות‬of ‫ תורה‬and ‫מצוות‬. This is easily acquired when we remember the happiness and ecstasy of ‫עולם הבא‬, an ‫עולם שכולו טוב‬, an ‫ ;עולם העומד לעד ולנצח נצחים‬when we remember the words of ‫ רבינו יונה‬in :)'‫שערי תשובה (שער שלישי אות י‬ ‫“המצוה הקלה שכרה גדולה והפלא אשר ימד ולא יספר‬ — The reward of the simplest ‫ מצוה‬is great beyond measure of size or count”; and when we remember the meaning ‫וחיי עולם נטע בתוכינו‬. And how much more is its ‫ חשיבות‬realized for those who have experienced the closeness to ‫ הקב"ה‬by learning ‫ תורה‬and doing the ‫מצוות‬, who have experienced the true taste of ‫שבת ויום טוב‬, of ‫אמונה‬, of ‫ ;צדקה וחסד‬those who feel the tranquility of ‫בטחון‬, the fulfillment felt

through ‫ — שמירת המצוות‬how much greater and more intense is their preparation for ‫שבועות‬. The elaborate delicacies, the milchig and the fleishig, are all an extension of our festive mood due to the ‫שמחת היום‬. They are expressions of our great happiness and our means of celebrating our privileged roles as ‫בני תורה‬. To the deep regret of the entire board at The Monsey View, an ad that appeared in our paper went against the very essence of this ‫ הייליגע‬day, the preparation it demands and the reason we celebrate. Here, regretfully, we let a mundane, lifeless object — which is to be elevated to contribute to the ‫ שמחת היום טוב‬and the ‫ — שמחת התורה‬be jokingly equated to the most serious and most important phenomenon of the universe: the ‫עשרת הדברת‬ spoken '‫מפי ה‬, as His Presence appeared in fire ‫עד‬ ‫ לב השמים‬and the entire nation trembled, standing in awe to hear the '‫דבר ה‬. This is truly not what we want to display to our ‫ חשובע‬readers. We take this mistake very seriously. Inadvertent as it was, it made its mark. Here at The Monsey View, we will further improve our ad-approval process, upgrading our already stringent requirements to ensure future ads are suited for every home throughout the community. Wishing our readership ‫ א גוט יום טוב‬and that we all be ‫ זוכה‬to appreciate the priceless gifts we have been granted as part of ‫כלל ישראל‬.

(Re: The Simple Secret of a Perfect Linen Closet, Issue 145) Thank you, The Monsey View! Thank you! I’ve been struggling to fit my bulky bedding and sheets into my miniscule linen closet without much success. Your feature on the proper way of folding linen was easy to follow and clearly depicted. It was effortless for me to transform my closet. Thank you for the clarity of the article. It has brought me much harchavos hada’as. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the sensible, affordable and delicious supper recipes I have clipped and saved. S. Klein

MISSING MY MAGAZINE I wanted to let you know that people from Brooklyn keep taking off with my copies of The Monsey View. (I hear the same from my friends who have moved here to Monsey). One of the main reasons this happens? Your recipes! My former Brooklynite friend and I (both relatively new to Monsey) try your recipes often and love them. They are very clear, fairly simple and doable, and delicious. It’s nice to have impressive recipes, but when magazines begin putting in ingredients with names that I can barely pronounce, it’s no longer pertinent to me. Keep it up! N.U.

HOME-ENHANCING FEATURES I am writing to thank you for providing the excellent feature by Blimy Wassertheil on baking sourdough bread. I had been interested in trying it for a while, but I was intimidated by the confusing and imM&S SHOE REPAIR

precise directions I received when I tried to research the process. With this clearly explained recipe in hand, baking sourdough challah was a pleasurable and rewarding experience, and the results — two chewy, flavorful loaves with beautiful golden-brown crusts — was enjoyed by the entire family. In a similar vein, linen-folding is a chore that I like least of all; I tend to procrastinate in order to avoid confronting the large jumble of fabric that needs to fit into my very shallow closet shelves. I would simply try folding my sets this way and that until they looked okay and would somehow fit in. Now I am thankful to have a simple set of instructions to follow that yields neat, uniform sets of linen. I realize now that much of my dislike for this job stemmed from the frustration and extra time that was wasted from not knowing how to get the linens folded efficiently. Keep these practical, home-enhancing articles coming! I can’t tell you how much they are appreciated! Sincerely, P.L.

(Re: Moving 101, Issue 145) Your article with moving tips mentioned that it’s okay to leave items in furniture drawers during moving, providing that they’re wrapped well with stretch wrap. We would like to bring to the attention of all readers that one should never leave any items inside the furniture pieces or drawers, for several reasons: First of all, furniture is generally not built to be transported while containing your belongings inside, and they’re more likely to break in the moving process. In addition to that, your contents can get damaged too, even if you wrap it well, and this pertains to lightweight and heavy items alike (clothing, for example, can get stuck in the drawer-tracks and may tear). Regarding using boxes from a previous move, make sure there are no markings from the previous move on them, as that makes it very confusing for the movers to place your boxes in the room where you want them. Color markings or colored tape is not ideal either, as similar colors can cause confusion to the movers. Rather write a room number on each box, according to the rooms you want them placed in the new house. Wishing you a smooth move, Yoel Glanz Excellent Movers T: 845.354.2983, 845.783.2983 www.XcellentMovers.com info@XcellentMovers.com

BY ANY OTHER NAME (Re: Earning Points, Issue 144) The story about the Parnassah Points scandal was a gevaldige article and very helpful, but I have one comment. If my name would be Chaimowitz and I’d be living in Lakewood, I’d never forgive the fact that the bad guy in the story was so named. It would be much better to use a common name, like Friedman, for instance, or an unusual name, like Zevulunowitz. For the future, please be more considerate and be careful not to publish anything that could be harmful to others. Thank you very much. Not Chaimowitz

DON’T FALL FOR SCAMMERS (Re: Earning Points, Issue 144) As I read your story about the person who was scammed by a man who hid under the company Parnassah Points, my head began to swim, since my brother-in-law is now embroiled in a very similar situation, one that doesn’t yet have an end in sight. A company claiming to be based in Boro Park, run by partners who went by the names of Chaim (perhaps he was a gilgul of the man professing to be Mr. Chaimowitz from Lakewood) and Shmuel Folger, promised him to apply for credit cards and arrange for the spending, thereby building his credit and allowing him to earn cash points. Just like in your story, my brother-in-law fell for it, completely taken by the heimish lingo and mannerisms, and shared his confidential information, blindly signing forms that he couldn’t properly read, as he is not very fluent in English. His credit limit was very soon increased, allowing the scammers to spend over $200,000. They eventually issued a check to pay for it, but the check bounced. This was followed by weeks of these thieving “business partners” avoiding my brother-in-law, claiming to have gone on vacation, and then just not answering his calls. Then the bills started coming; the scammers hadn’t paid a cent, and the credit card companies launched investigations into my brother-in-law and how all that spending occured. At this point, my brother-inlaw would have had the opportunity to dispute the charges, but the pair suddenly reappeared, promising to clear the debt shortly at a meeting they arranged with him, prompting him not to dispute any charges. He never heard from them again. By the time he realized the mess he was in, it was too late for any disputes. Currently, my brother-in-law is in court with over 25 companies who are demanding he repay charges that he never made. He’s spending a fortune on lawyers and dealing with many judgments against him. For his terrible situation I daven, “HaMakom yeracheim aleihem v’yotzi’eim m’afeilah l’orah.” And to acheinu

SUPPER IN THE SLOW COOKER (Re: No-Fuss Suppers, Issue 144) As a working mother, I really enjoyed your food column on simple one-pan/one-pot suppers. I would like to know if the Roasted Vegetable-Cutlet Bake and/ or the Cutlets, Farfel and Letcho can be cooked in the Crock-Pot. LEAH STERN RESPONDS: They can both be made in the Crock-Pot. However, for the former, cook the sweet potato and beets first, and add the chicken cutlets only for the last hour. As for the farfel dish, make sure not to leave it too long, as the chicken will dry up and the farfel will become sticky and grow too big.

TOWARD A CLEANER AND SAFER TOWN Thank you so much for publicizing the ad that encouraged the Suzanne Lake grand clean-up drive. Let’s move on to more widespread clean-up and garbage disposal education! Monsey is ka”h becoming very populated, and multiple dwellings mean multiplied garbage! We need more intensive education. We need garbage receptacles placed around town. We need better recycling ideas and incentives. We hope you will all join the team of massive education, guidance and frum-resident cooperation. While we are on the subject of education — as Monsey turns from town-like into city-like, we could also benefit from massive driver education, including consideration for other drivers, for pedestrians, etc. Let us all join together to bring about some measure of improvement. Cleanliness and mentchlichkeit are hallmarks of a Yid, and Monsey should be a model of such behavior. May we be instrumental in bringing about a major overhaul in attitude, action and community pride. A Pro-Clean Resident

STAYING FOCUSED Knowing The Monsey View and its chashuve staff, I was very confused and upset when I came across an ad last week in your magazine making leitzanos of the Torah, the yom tov Shavuos and what it stands for! The pesukim portray the awesome ma’amid of Har Sinai. The entire mountain trembled violently. We heard and saw the Aseres Hadibros m’pi Hashem with thunder and lightning. We jumped back with yirah and pachad, and our neshamos flew out, not being able to withstand the awesome blast of davar Hashem. How are we mesiach da’as and able to forget the word of Hashem, ch”v, and find ourselves able to make light of such a most serious and fundamental davar

sh’bekedusha? We must keep our hashkafos straight and not let the emptiness and corruption of the secular world that we live in have an effect on us. That is by keeping a clear mind and having a clear focus on what is the purpose of life and money. And to remember Who is in charge of everything. Y.M.S. THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: We received many letters and much feedback in regard to this regretful mistake, and we can’t publish all of them. The issue is addressed on page 2 of The Monsey View.

Dear Basya, After months of hard work I have finally reached my goal weight. I am so thankful and so thrilled that all my efforts have paid off. Mixed with my joy, however, is shock at the comments that I have been getting from some of my friends. My friends have said things like, “You are becoming anorexic,” “Your face is too skinny” or “You are obsessed with food.” Where is this negativity coming from? It is really upsetting and hurtful. Signed, Reached my Goal CHAPTER 4

Dear Goal-Reacher, First of all, congratulations on working hard toward something meaningful to you, and getting there! What an amazing feeling of accomplishment! I receive this question a lot. Why do people become negative when other people lose weight? The simple answer is jealousy, but it’s worth exploring a bit further, because oftentimes the person making the rude comments is a close friend or relative who really wants the best for us most of the time. Why are they suddenly jealous?! The answer goes deep to the root of what women value. Studies conducted on women’s priorities find that women concern themselves first with their families, followed immediately afterward by their appearance, which includes their weight. This means women place a higher priority on how they look than on finances, health, fun, work or any other commonly held priority!

62 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 2, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

With this understanding, it makes sense that women react strongly when faced with your successful weight loss. It is something they deeply value, more than almost anything else, but may have not yet attained. Keeping this in mind when faced with snide and derisive comments can help you listen to their comments without taking them personally. As a side point, it is also a good idea to double-check and make sure that you aren’t talking too much about your dieting success, as this can be extremely annoying to others. And of course, make sure your weight-loss journey is being conducted in a healthy manner; your friends may be genuinely concerned about you. Best, Basya Please send in your nutrition question to info@nutritionbytanya.com, Attn: Basya.

Parshas

Emor

By: Malka Schneps

“RABBI (YEHUDAH HANASI) USED TO SAY: ‘Be as careful with a small mitzvah as with a big one, for you do not know the reward of mitzvos’” (Pirkei Avos 2:1). Counting sefirah takes just a moment of time. It is such a quick mitzvah that a person might not realize just how significant it really is. This week, we will focus on the tremendous importance and power of sefirah. Parshas Emor contains the mitzvah of sefiras haomer: “U’sfartem lachem… — And you shall count for yourselves, from the morrow of the day of rest, from the day you bring the omer as a wave offering; they shall be complete.” (Vayikra 23:15) There is a well-known machlokes regarding the mitzvah of counting sefirah. The Bahag holds that counting the forty-nine days of sefirah constitutes one whole mitzvah, whereas the Tosafos holds that counting the forty-nine days constitutes forty-nine individual mitzvos. The Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 489:8) tells us the halacha, which respects both opinions equally: Any time either opinion holds that we should count, we do count, but we only make a bracha when both agree. In a similar manner, we must balance the importance of Klal Yisroel as one whole versus the value of each individual Yid. The Shem MiShmuel suggests that where the talmidim of Rabbi Akiva failed was that they became so focused on the community that they lost sight of the unique value of each individual, and so they failed to honor one another. Thus, the time of sefirah — the time during which the talmidim passed away — is a time well-suited for focusing on the balance between the individual and the community as a whole. The Shem MiShmuel cites his father, the Avnei Ezer, as follows: We count sefirah from Nissan, through Iyar, and into Sivan. The mazel of Nissan is the lamb, which represents group unity; sheep live in a harmonious flock. During Nissan, we were redeemed from Mitzrayim as a community. The mazal of Iyar is the bull, an animal that stands alone. This represents a shift in focus from the community to the individual. Finally, we conclude sefirah and are mekabel the Torah

68 / THE MONSEY VIEW

in Sivan, whose mazal is twins. Our avodas Hashem should ideally combine both elements in balance. Sefirah is a time when we focus on our personal growth. It is a time when we strive to perfect our middos and prepare ourselves for Kabbalas HaTorah. The time of sefirah is critical to our ruchniyus in ways we may not be aware. The Sfas Emes states that just as our physical sustenance depends on the time of sefirah during which we harvest our wheat, our ruchniyus for the entire year depends on sefirah. The Zohar (Parshas Emor 97b) says that a person who does not fulfill the mitzvah of sefiras haomer is not considered pure and does not deserve a portion in the Torah. The Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh notes that the mitzvah regarding sefirah — U’sfartem (You shall count) — has the same shoresh as the word sapir (sapphire stone). The second Luchos were made of sapphire stone (Vayikra Rabbah 32:2). The Ohr HaChaim adds that our neshamos are compared to sapphire, which becomes dulled when dirty. When Yidden count sefirah, we have the ability to polish our neshamos until they are fitting for Kabbalas HaTorah. The Shem MiShmuel notes, in the name of his father, that Kabbalas HaTorah took place during the mazel of twins in Sivan. Regarding the time when the Bnei Yisroel reached Har Sinai, Chazal tell us, “When they came to Har Sinai they formed a homogeneous group. At that moment, Hashem said, ‘The time has arrived to give My children the Torah’” (Eichah Rabbah, Pesichah 20). So we see the importance of unity as a community to receive the Torah. But at the same time, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said, “If Yisroel had been lacking even one person, the Shechinah would not have been revealed to them” (Devarim Rabbah 7:8). Thus, each individual is just as important for Kabbalas HaTorah. The time of sefirah has the tremendous power to transform our natures and create a wellspring of spiritual sustenance from which we can draw throughout the entire year. Let us not lose this opportunity to polish our individual neshamos until they shine like sapphire so that on Shavuos we can unify as a nation with the Borei Olam and be fit to receive the Torah.

Workshop Helps Monsey Schools, Shuls Apply for $75,000 Government Security Grants WITH A HISTORIC $10 MILLION in security funding grants for religious institutions in upstate New York expected to be rolled out imminently, representatives of more than seven dozen schools, shuls and camps took part in a workshop to learn how to take the first steps in the application process. The total amount allocated for security initiatives to benefit religious institutions in the 2018 federal budget was $60 million. Of that amount, $50 million was designated for targeted urban areas such as New York City, but for the first time ever, $10 million was allocated for other areas, which include Monsey and upstate areas. Applying for the grants can be an extremely technical and detailed process, prompting Agudath Israel of America’s yeshivah services division to run the April 25th workshop. Representatives of 86 yeshivos, shuls and camps took part in the workshop, which was held at the Yeshiva of Spring Valley boys building on College Road, with some

participants taking part in the program via telephone. The workshop included a customized demonstration of the application process delivered by a representative of the New York State Grants Reform Office, and participants had the opportunity to submit their applications on the spot and start the pre-approval process, the first step in securing a grant. According to David Pollock, associate director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, approved institutions could receive $75,000 for security initiatives. The workshop was very helpful, said Rabbi Yaakov Oppen, executive director of Yeshiva Bais Hachinuch. “Security is something that is important to everyone, and we all have to always be as vigilant as we can,” said Rabbi Oppen. Mrs. Deborah Zachai, director of education affairs at the Agudah, said that she hopes to run additional workshops in Monsey once the grants are officially announced.

Warning Issued for Romaine Lettuce as E. Coli Outbreak Spreads NEARLY 100 PEOPLE IN 22 STATES have been sickened by romaine lettuce tainted by E. coli bacteria, prompting the Centers for Disease Control to issue nationwide warnings. NBC News reported that more than half of the 98 people sickened by the affected greens had to be hospitalized. The affected lettuce came from the Yuma, Arizona, area and representatives of the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration are focusing on more than 20 local farms in an attempt to pinpoint the source of the problem. “People should not be eating any type of romaine lettuce unless they know for sure that it is not coming from the Yuma region,” said Matt Wise of the CDC. The advisory includes whole romaine heads, romaine hearts, chopped and organic romaine, and any salad blends that contain romaine. Locally, many stores in the Monsey area have had signs hanging in their produce department advising customers that their lettuce came from other areas and was safe to eat. A letter sent by Bodek in mid-April said that its lettuce comes from California and was not af-

fected by the E. coli outbreak. Two cases of E. coli were reported in New York, with seven in New Jersey, two in Connecticut and 18 in Pennsylvania. The current E. coli outbreak is the worst recorded since 2006, when three people died and 270 became sick after eating contaminated spinach.

SHAVUOS WITH FLAWLESS

RAMAPO TOWN SUPERVISOR Michael Specht and the Town Board, in conjunction with Chief Brad Weidel and the Town of Ramapo Police Department, would like to take this opportunity to educate its motorists and pedestrians on the safe and legal way to share our roadways. It is everyone’s responsibility to use caution, common sense and obey traffic laws. The following is a list of common New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law violations that can lead to pedestrian-involved motor vehicle crashes.

FREE

Gift wrapping with purchase of any album! *with mention of ad

DRIVERS Operators of motor vehicles are required to yield to pedestrians who are attempting to cross a roadway at a crosswalk. *Failing to do so may result in a fine of up $150.00 (first offense) and 3 points on your driver’s license.* PEDESTRIANS Whenever pedestrians are at an intersection controlled by WALK – DON’T WALK signs, including symbols of a walking person or upraised hand, the following laws apply. • Steady WALK or walking person symbol – pedestrians may cross and have the right of way. (Caution should still be used; never assume the right of way.) • Flashing DON’T WALK or upraised hand symbol – pedestrians are prohibited from starting to cross the intersection. • Steady DON’T WALK or upraised hand symbol – pedestrians are prohibited from crossing the intersection. Whenever pedestrians are crossing a roadway at a spot other than a crosswalk, the pedestrian is required to yield the right of way to all vehicles upon the roadway. Pedestrians are not permitted to cross an intersection diagonally. Where sidewalks are present and safe to use, it is illegal for a pedestrian to walk along and upon the roadway. When sidewalks are not present, pedestrians are required to walk along the left side of the roadway (facing traffic), and upon approach of a vehicle from the opposite direction, move as far left as possible. *Pedestrians who fail to obey these laws are subject to a $150.00 fine.* Last, pedestrians are encouraged to wear reflective clothing when walking at night or in dimly lit areas. The Town of Ramapo offers reflective sashes free of charge to any town resident. Sashes can be picked up in the Purchasing Department at Town Hall or at Ramapo Police Headquarters located at 237 Rt. 59, Suffern, NY.

Fruit Fest!

Recipes, food styling and photos by: Gitty Luria Spring is at long last here. And that means more sunshine, early-morn chirping and, of course, lots of fruits! But when those spontaneously tossed fruit salads and old-school ambrosia no longer appeal to your kids (or yourself!), here are two twists that will have your family licking their bowls.

Magical Fruit Salad

INGREDIENTS

I’ve always wondered what turns a given recipe into a classic. To me, it’s usually one original ingredient that not only lends it that magical flavor, but also replaces a multitude of ingredients and cuts down on unnecessary steps. And, of course, yields perfection every time. By this reasoning, this recipe is sure to become a classic in your home.

Salad 6 cups fruit Dressing 1 box instant vanilla pudding mix

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW

DIRECTIONS 1. Toss fruits in the pudding mix and allow the powder to work its magic! The pudding mix dissolves into the fruits’ juices, creating an indulgent splash of flavor in every bite!

When you’re unsure whether you’re craving superfoods or super-sweets, try this salad, which combines both to satisfy whatever it is you’re craving. With its tangy-sweet dressing and crunchy cake croutons, this striking salad is as impressive in sight as it is in flavor.

Tangy Apple Salad

DIRECTIONS

INGREDIENTS Salad

2 T. balsamic vinegar

1 container spring mix (spinach and lettuce)

Salt and pepper to taste (scant amounts, add only as needed)

2 green apples, cut into matchsticks

Caramel Cake Croutons

1 cup craisins

1 small, loaf-size vanilla pound cake (sponge cake works too, but pound cake is better)

1 container honey-glazed pecans Maple Balsamic Vinaigrette ¼ cup maple syrup ¼ cup oil

84 / THE MONSEY VIEW

¾ cup sugar 3 T. water 4 T. margarine

1. Heat oven to 350°. Cut cake into ⅓-inch squares. Bake for approximately 10 minutes until golden around the edges, turning once halfway through. 2. Over medium heat, melt sugar, water and margarine until it reaches a boil. Boil lightly, without stirring, until sauce is golden-amber, about 6–8 minutes. 3. Working quickly, add cake cubes to sauce and stir to coat. Immediately separate cubes and allow to harden on parchment paper. 4. Toss greens, apples and craisins with dressing. When ready to serve, top with pecans and cake croutons.

FRUITS WITHOUT LABOR Fruit-cutting techniques Ever ditched fruits simply because you didn’t want to put yourself through the ordeal of a peeling/cutting marathon that awards you a mere pit and juice pool when you’re done? You’re not alone. But there are easier ways to get to the prize, no gadgets needed. Here’s to enjoying fruits once again.

88 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 2, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

ORANGES

KIWIS

Oranges are of the most oft-eaten fruits, and somehow we still manage to either spritz its juice into our eyes or break our fingernails off in the process. Try this, and you’ll never look back!

Do you end up with kiwi puree every time you attempt to peel one? Here’s one way to save that kiwi.

Gently cut a circle into the peel at the top and bottom, taking care not to cut into the fruit. Remove the top and bottom peels with your hands. Then cut the peel vertically, without cutting into the flesh. Now lift the peel at the edge of the cut and remove the peel in one piece!

Slice off the top and bottom. Cut a thin line vertically down the kiwi skin. Insert a spoon through the cut and slide around to remove the skin.

PINEAPPLE I used to have a love/hate relationship with pineapple. As delicious as it is, it just wasn’t worth the (usually botchy) cutting job. By following these steps, you too will learn to master the pineapple. Using a sharp knife, slice off the top and bottom. Cut into four. Slice off the top triangular part of each quarter. Slice each quarter again. With the slice standing vertically, cut the rind off and cut into pieces.

HONEYDEW/ CANTALOUPE Ever put that melon back on the grocery shelf simply because you never managed to cut one up correctly? These step-by-step instructions will restore your confidence when cutting those melons. So go on, add it to your cart!

Trust Hadas, our NYS licensed esthetician, to indulge your skin. With her deft and gentle touch, you’ll feel as good as you look. Experience beauty that’s more than skin deep.

@fraidylichter

90 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 2, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Using a long, sharp knife, slice off the top and bottom. Cut the melon vertically in half. Using a spoon, scoop out the seeds. Cut the halves vertically again, and again, until desired thickness is reached. Now cut the flesh into cubes and slide them off with a knife.

MANGO

WATERMELON

Sure, you can buy gadgets for anything your mind can imagine, but did you know that you have an ingenious mangopeeler in your cupboard? Now cups are no longer only for drinking… but also for peeling mangos!

No more burying your face into watermelon slices, and no more forks needed either! This makes watermelon a perfect finger food! Start with a halved watermelon. Using a long, sharp knife, cut the watermelon vertically and horizontally, creating a grid. I find it easier to stick the knife into the center, cutting to one side, then cutting the other side again from the center out. Slide out one stick at a time and serve.

Slice off the two sides of the mango, about ½ inch away from the center. Then cut off the two remaining sides. Firmly, but not too forcefully (you don’t want to smash the glass with your hand), push the mango over the edge of the cup to remove skin.

GRAPES Finally, one fruit that doesn’t require peeling! But when it comes to making salads, cutting grapes can be a time killer. This neat trick will make salad prep a breeze! Lay grapes between two flat lids. Hold down the top lid to prevent grapes from sliding out, and slice through all the grapes at once.

WHERE LEGACY WA S BO R N Cracks run deep in the parched soil, the scorched expanse bearing no imprint of hooves or their horsemen. Cutting through the desolation is a river, no more than a trickle over a stretch of protruding stones that was once its riverbed. Wilted plants stand mute in the shimmering heat, their shadows hazy over the smoldering ground. Left in desolation for many centuries, Eretz Yisroel stood barren, devoid of her people who had been cast away to foreign nations. But if you would listen closely over the deafening silence, you could hear the burbling of a distant spring, and if you would close your eyes, you could capture the sweet scents of carob. And if you would follow your senses, you would find life against the backdrop of desolation.

LOVE Your Birth Experience THE VILLAGE OF PEKI’IN Though its people have relocated in recent years, the village of Peki’in is the only city in all of Eretz Yisroel to have had continuous Jewish occupancy since the Churban. And although the village barely has a semblance of Yiddishkeit, she still proudly nourishes the very same carob tree that sustained Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his son Elazar close to 1,900 years ago! What merits does Peki’in have to have had uninterrupted Jewish tenancy throughout our brutal history of persecution? What secrets are buried within the soil of this town that allows her to still breathe life into that same old carob tree and keep the waters of the spring flowing? Perhaps it draws life from the intense Torah study of the two tanaaim it sheltered in their time of need?

For much of her history, Peki’in has been home to a diverse group of many cultures whose people have gotten along fairly well. It is recounted that the Yidden were respected for being the oldest original inhabitants, and they enjoyed cordial relations with their non-Jewish neighbors. Then, in 1938, during the British Mandate, idyllic life came to a halt, and the relentless riots forced the last remaining families to leave. Over the years, Jewish families had sporadically attempted resettlement, but were met with rioting gangs who sent a clear message that their hourglass had run out of time. But one family wouldn’t accept defeat so easily. Two years after leaving, the Zinati family returned from their exile, and along with the help of their Druze neighbors, claimed residency once again — and they haven’t left since. Refusing to extinguish the last fiery ember in this charred town, the Zinati family took upon themselves to maintain the Peki’in shul. This shul is said to have been erected over the ruins of the beis medrash where Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya studied with his talmidim. Today, the Zinati’s only daughter Margalit, now in her mid-eighties, still dedicates her life to preserving the shul.

SIGHTS TO SEE If you tread across the cobblestone roads now, it would be difficult to believe that a continuous chain of Yiddishkeit once flowed through its streets. The air is thick with conversation in Arabic, and Middle Eastern aromas waft from beneath the shuk canopies. But though Jewish life has been wiped from existence, the villagers still take pride in the historical souvenirs Rabbi Shimon left behind. The old carob tree huddles at the mouth of a cave, said to have been home to Rabbi Shimon and his son for the duration of their exile. Today, only the mouth of the cave is accessible, as her interior has taken the brunt of an 18th century earthquake. Not far away, a freshwater spring is located in the town square, believed to be the very same spring Rabbi Shimon drank from. On Lag Ba’Omer, while thousands flock to Rabbi Shimon’s kever in celebration of his legacy, many Photo credit: zissil.com also make a point of visiting the One of the offshoots of Rabbi cave of Rabbi Shimon. Some of Earth’s most beautiful sights are cloaked in the darkness of the underground. In the dim confines of caves across the world hide marble cave walls, crystal formations, glowing fungi and stalagmites. Cavers are constantly on the lookout for uncharted underground territory that they can explore. Explorers are outfitted for expeditions with headlamps for the absolute darkness they may encounter (plus back-up light sources packed in their backpack), hard hats for protection from fallen rocks and bumps, and temperature-appropriate protective or insulated clothing. They generally explore in groups, for the hazards that await them — in the form of sudden drops, squeezes and water — pose great risks. Experienced cavers who survey and map caves may not take too kindly to being referred to as “spelunkers.” Although before the 1960s this term was used indiscriminately, it has later gotten a reputation for alluding to cave hobbyists not learned in current exploration techniques, who spelunk for recreational purposes only. Perhaps the bumper sticker displayed by cavers says it all:

(Outside the caving community, any word form of “spelunk” does not reflect on a caver’s skill level.) While caving may have acquired a reputation to some as displaying a disregard for safety, there are few sights that compare to the visual treasures in the depths. Here is a curated collection of the marvelous subterranean sights the world of speleology has to offer.

← Deepest Known Cave The deepest a cave system can be would be around 9,800 feet underground. At a greater depth than that, the pressure of overlying rocks would be too great for its survival. That isn’t to say that we actually know of a cave that deep. The deepest known cave is KRUBERA CAVE in Georgia, at 7,208 feet underground. That is a measurement 72 feet greater than the Chrysler Building, the Washington Monument, the Empire State Building, the Pyramids of Giza, the Eiffel Tower and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, piled one atop the other! In fact, it is the only cave known to be deeper than 2,000 meters (6,562 feet). Many caving teams have explored this cave, and legendary paths leading to great depths were discovered over the years. This record-breaking depth was reached in 2012 by a team of 59 explorers who spent 27 days underground. Cave explorers are still haunting this Georgian cave, hoping to find a yet greater abyss with which to set a new record.

↑ Most Beautiful Cave A major tourist attraction, WAITOMO GLOWWORMS CAVE in New Zealand is home to millions of glowworms that illuminate the cave like the most beautiful starry night sky. Three levels of this cave can be toured, and its underground river ridden by boat for a spectacular show.

Another Beautiful Cave → The azure waters of Lake General Carrera are reflected upon the swirling walls of the MARBLE CAVES in Chile, creating imagery of unearthly beauty. With its location as a peninsula upon the lake, boats can go through its “tunnels” and right by the smooth marble walls.

Sunniest Caves → The TERAWANG CAVE in Indonesia has a perforated ceiling, which allows for good air circulation and light. Brilliant shafts of sunlight create a breathtaking sight and illuminate a large part of the cave’s interior. In fact, “terawang” in Indonesia has a meaning similar to “transparent.” The DEVETASHKA CAVE in Bulgaria also allows sunlight to penetrate and illuminate a few of its major sections, with its seven ceiling holes of different sizes.

↓ Largest Cave Chamber If you are not a professional caver, the world’s largest cave is offlimits to you. The MIAO ROOM CAVERN, a chamber beneath a national park in China, is only accessible by an underground stream. It was only guessed to be the largest until 2013 when scientists used laser to prove its dimensions at a volume of 380.7 million cubic feet. The cave with the largest surface area, though, can be visited. And that is SARAWAK CHAMBER in Borneo, an Island in Asia, which could fit multiple airplanes inside.

↓ Closest Notable Cave HOWE CAVERNS was discovered in 1842 by Lester Hower, who had a farm in the area. After noticing that his cows would frequently gather near some bushes at the bottom of a hill in the summer heat, he decided to investigate and found a strong, cool breeze emanating from a hole in the earth. After digging with his neighbor, upon whose property the phenomenon appeared, they discovered the caverns below and later turned them into a major tourist attraction.

← Cave with Shortest Visit Time The CAVE OF THE CRYSTALS located in Mexico has some of the largest natural crystals ever found. Much of the is unexplored due to the high temperatures, which reach up to 136 degrees Fahrenheit, and its 90 to 99 percent humidity. A person can endure approximately 10 minutes of exposure in this cave at a time.

↓ Iciest Cave The largest known ice cave system is EISRIESENWELT’S ICE CAVES in Austria. Its name, ice-reezen-velt, says it all! Each winter, another few inches of ice is added to the formations inside the tunnels. And what magnificent formations they are: frozen waterfalls, dense blue solid slabs of ice and mammoth icicles. The maximum temperature in the cave is freezing point, or 32 degrees.

Ice Caves → To be classified as an ice cave, at least part of a given cave must be under 32 degrees around the year. Iceland, Antarctica and Russia, among other coldclimate locales, are home to numerous ice caves, from crystal ice caves to blue ice caves, man-made caves and caves with the most unusual ice formations.

114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 2, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

↓ Unusual Cave Fingal’s Cave in Scotland is formed entirely from basalt columns, making for a very interesting sight. The cave’s entrance is arched, very large and right on the sea, and a stream of water fills the cave. Tourists are generally brought close to the cave by boat, weather permitting, from where a row of columns permit exploration by foot.

FYI All caverns are caves, but not all caves are caverns. To be classified as a cavern, a cave must be underground, quite large, and will usually include a system or series of cave chambers with open spaces connected by various passages and sometimes streams.

“Great! I'm always going to be fat!” Yanky said looking annoyed

My father let me mow the lawn a couple more times over that same summer.

The frustration was clear. Yanky was fed up.

“What makes you say that?” I asked in concern.

“The only thing that is going to make sure you stop yo-yo dieting is understanding and acting on a few key principles.

“I absolutely hate exercise! I can’t see myself passing on a gishmaka piece of kugel for the rest of my life either! It just isn't going to happen for me.”

“Anyway, fast forward 2 years, I was now 11, and the excitement for mowing the lawn has since diminished. In fact, I hated it! I'd always try my luck in getting my younger brother to do the 'honorary chore'. Apparently he was too young ...

“I first want to start by saying Being overweight is not a problem.” “What do you mean it isn't a problem?” Yanky said jumping in. “My doctor is really annoying me about my weight. He is telling me that my weight is a problem.” “Yes. Being over weight is a problem. But it isn't the real issue. It is just a symptom of the real issue. “When you don't eat the right foods, don't exercise or give your body enough time to recover the weight is going to go up. “If you would eat right, become more active and give your body the recovery it needs then you will lose weight. Does this all make sense?” Yanky nodded yes as I watched him take in all I was saying. “The real problem is your lifestyle. What you do on a daily basis. “By trying to lose weight with no intention of being healthy you are addressing the symptom and not the real issue. When you only address the symptom and not the issue the symptoms will eventually just come back.” “What you are saying is that I need to eat a certain way for the rest of my life and exercise every single day if I want to keep the results?” Yanky asked, afraid of the answer. “Exactly!” I replied

“Well, let me as you think: What is the point of having a body?” I asked. Yanky responded with a confused look. “Might I suggest something that may help ease the pressure?” I asked. “I’m all ears!” Yanky exclaimed. “You have to change the way you see yourself." I began. “If I can only lose weight then I would see myself differently!” Yanky said slapping his stomach. “Losing weight would definitely help you see yourself differently, but that isn't what I'm referring to.

"I bring up this story because I wonder if you know what happened in those 2 years? How did mowing the lawn go from a fun activity to a punishment??" “I guess it was the way you looked at mowing the lawn” Yanky said shrugging his shoulder unsure of himself. “Exactly!” I cried. “The action itself didn't change. My view and interpretation of the action changed consequently changing my feeling towards the action. “This is what I mean when I say, 'change the way you view yourself.'

“Instead of looking at weight loss as a burden, start viewing healthy living as “Growing up I had a small patch of grass in an opportunity. A privilege. REB SHMUEL SHAPIRO, ZT”L, a distinguished Yerushalmi Yid, was a true “Ish Meron.” He felt a genuine closeness to Rabbi Shimon, spending untold hours of davening and learning in Meron throughout his lifetime. His home was a happy one, blessed with many children. When his daughter Esther was ten months old, tragedy struck. Esther contracted polio. Polio was rampant, and cases of the dreaded disease was on the rise, causing muscle weakness that resulted in an inability to move or breathe — or even full paralysis and neurological damage in some cases. There was little hope for a cure. Soon, Esther’s little feet were out of commission. She was almost completely paralyzed. Being that polio was considered contagious, Esther was isolated in Shaarei Tzedek hospital. No one was allowed near her other than the few nurses on staff who attended to such patients. After a few months, Esther was declared no longer contagious, and she was transferred to an institution specializing in treating polio patients. Placing Esther in the institution’s care was a twofold tragedy, with negative repercussions, both physically and spiritually. The head doctor was an extreme anti-Semite, despite his being a Jew himself, and most of the caregivers were Christians who were more than happy to tout their Christian beliefs on the hapless patients. There were crosses and celebrations for non-Jewish holidays. There was chillul Shabbos, immodesty and non-kosher. Sadly, Yiddishkeit was blatantly absent. And little was done for the patients’ physical development. This gehinnom was painful to the parents of young patients. How they suffered knowing their children were growing up in such a terrible atmosphere.

Preposterous as it may have seemed, she resolved to take Esther to the place her husband deemed so dear. She would take her to Rabbi Shimon.

Yet despite their dreams of providing at the very least a frum environment for their sick children, there was simply no choice. Reb Shmuel and his wife used to frequently visit the institution to see little Esther. The years moved on and Esther was already eight. Still, she hardly advanced physically. She could just about crawl on the floor, unable to stand or walk at all. The doctors and staff did not think Esther would ever progress more. The heart of a mother never gives up, though, and Reb Shmuel’s wife decided that enough was enough! She would not accept the dire prognosis. Preposterous as it may have seemed, she resolved to take Esther to the place her husband deemed so dear. She would take her to Rabbi Shimon. The hard part was getting Esther out of the institution. The place was run with a very strict hand, and obtaining such a temporary release was difficult and unheard of. She pleaded with the staff to allow her to

take Esther home for Shabbos. Of course, she didn’t tell them where she truly planned to go. The doctor was reluctant. “Please,” she pleaded. “What could possibly happen? Let me take my child home for Shabbos.” Finally, she obtained approval. “You can take Esther. But she must be back on Motzei Shabbos.” Esther spent Shabbos at home. On Motzei Shabbos, however, instead of going back to the institution, her mother packed several items necessary for Esther’s care, and with the assistance of one of her siblings, dragged Esther in

his wife was in the maareh, he brought a blanket and suggested that Esther be placed on the floor so she shouldn’t have to be held the entire time. On the men’s side, near the grave of Rabbi Shimon, Reb Shmuel davened fervently. And on the other side of the mechitzah, near the grave of Reb Elazar ben Reb Shimon, the anguished mother poured out her heart in tefillah. For three consecutive days, they davened and pleaded and shed many earnest tears. For the Kol Yachol, our Father in Shamayim, nothing is too hard. They begged and hoped for a yeshuah. On the third night, they prepared to go home. There was no choice; they couldn’t stay forever. Wiping a tear, the mother put down her Tehillim and turned to the blanket where Esther lay. But the blanket was empty! Her eyes swept the room and beheld a most interesting sight: The child had crawled to the grave of Reb Elazar. She was slowly pulling herself up to an upright position, holding on tightly to the iron gates that surrounded the tzion. Her weak, skinny hands clutching the gate, she slowly took a step and then another step, circling Reb Elazar’s grave! It was a true miracle! Esther had never done such a thing before; the last anyone knew, she could hardly crawl! Her mother did not know what to do first. She cried, she laughed, she kissed young Esther. She ran to her husband and called, “Reb Shmuel, kum zehn! Techiyas hameisim! Esther geit oifen fis! Ahn ofene nes!” Come look! Esther is walking! An open miracle! Reb Shmuel calmly responded, “Vus is? Der koach fun Reb Shimon…” What’s the matter? It’s the power of Rabbi Shimon. As one who truly lived with the greatness of Reb Shimon, he was not nearly as shocked or amazed as his wife was. They took Esther home. The next morning, Esther needed to go back to the institution. Worried and frightened at the staff’s reaction to their overdue return, they decided to surprise them. Esther would walk in on her own two feet! Sure enough, the staff was startled. What a commotion! They shouted and squealed and ran to call the doctor. How could it be?! What had happened?

When Reb Shmuel heard the grim prediction, he firmly said, “Reb Shimon doesn’t do half a job! Er vet zicher fihren tzum gutten.”

124 / THE MONSEY VIEW

This was unbelievable, inconceivable. Just a few days earlier, Esther had left helpless, hardly able to move on her own, and here she was walking by herself! The doctor called Mrs. Shapiro into his office and demanded to hear the full story. “Where were you?” “At home,” she replied. “No. I insist you tell me where you were with the child!” the doctor persisted. Again she replied, “I took Esther home.” The doctor pressed her until Mrs. Shapiro finally conceded. “Esther came with me to a big doctor. A very big doctor. He is in Meron and his name is Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.” The doctor, an extreme anti-religionist, could not fathom her words. He called some of the most famous polio institutes from around the world inquiring if they had ever confronted such a situation: a child who could not move and began to walk from one moment to the next. The responses were the same from each establishment he contacted. No. In all of history, such a thing had never occurred! Even the non-believing doctor had to admit that there is a Higher Being in control. Esther came home for good. Slowly, her condition improved. In time, she married a fine yungerman. But doctors told her she had no future. With her crippled history, she stood no chance of becoming a mother. When Reb Shmuel heard the grim prediction, he firmly said, “Reb Shimon doesn’t do half a job! Er vet zicher fihren tzum gutten.” Sure enough, Esther was zocheh to raise a large family of thirteen children, ka”h! By the second diagnosis, as by the first, there was no despair. Because by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, there is no despair. “Kedai Rabbi Shimon lismoch alav!”

YOMA D’HILULA The yungerleit accompanying Reb Simcha Mund —an elderly Yid in his nineties — to Meron, asked him why he insisted on continuing his annual tradition of going to Meron specifically on Lag Ba’Omer. On this day, what with the pushing, the crowds, the difficulty drawing near to the tzion, the trip is so much harder. Why, he could go any other day of the year! Reb Simcha responded with a sweet mashal. When a needy person collects tzedakah, he must have with him a letter of recommendation. The donor will read it and decide how much to give accordingly. But if a collector knocks on the donor’s door on the day the donor marries off his child, he does not need to show a letter — the donor’s heart is happy and his pocket is open. He will give more freely and more generously without all the investigation. So too, on the yoma d’hilula, on the “wedding day” of Rabbi Shimon, no questions are asked. Whoever you are, whatever you need, as much as you require… everything is irrelevant. The door is wide open! Banei, chayei, mezonei revichei… they are all up for grabs!

2. Fold in raw edge on either side and glue. 01 You can also singe the edges carefully with a match. If it is the first time you’re doing it, try it out on a scrap piece of ribbon until you get the hang of singeing only the edges. 3. To create a bow, cut another piece of ribbon to approximately 1 yard. Edges should be cut on a diagonal and singed. 02 Cross over the two sides, pinch the center and tie a narrow piece of ribbon around it tightly. 03 Trim the edges of the narrow ribbon. 04 4. Arrange flowers and other adornments in the center of the bow and glue. 05 5. Glue the bow about 2 inches from the end of one side of the ribbon. If you used the standard fold for your linen set, glue the bow perpendicular to the ribbon. 06 If you’re folding in the width for shallow closets, glue the bow in the same direction as the ribbon runs. 07 6. Cut off a 3-inch piece of Velcro, and with both sides fastened to one another, stick it onto the ribbon, right underneath the spot where the bow is attached. 08 7. Wrap the ribbon around the linen set. Once it’s centered, press down to affix the other side of the Velcro on the right spot. 8. Repeat with remaining linen sets and display in closet. 09 10

FOR FIFTEEN YEARS, my mother’s house lacked one thing. There were multiple linen closets, plenty of bathrooms, a roomy playroom and a large kitchen with all the cabinets we could ever need. Only the broom lacked a proper home. Somehow, when the house was being built, a broom closet slipped through the cracks. It didn’t seem like such a big deal at the time, so nothing was done about it. Throughout those years, as my mother struggled to find a satisfactory spot, the broom traveled around the house. First it was kept in the guest room off the kitchen. That started off well, but once my grandparents moved in and took over that space, she had to restart her search. Next stop was the back porch, which wasn’t a bad at idea at all, at least until the season’s first blizzard hit! This was followed by a short stint in the first-floor bathroom, adjacent to the kitchen. Unfortunately, being that the bathroom is barely big enough to fit a fully grown person, it wasn’t a very long-term solution either. The landing on the steps to the basement seemed promising until my mother realized it was too far from the kitchen; she was the only one who wasn’t too lazy to get the broom every

time something needed to be swept up. My mother got used to having a “wandering broom,” as I liked to call it, and never put too much thought into fixing the issue. I, on the other hand, with my mind always on organization, could not let the matter rest. Over the years, I gave my mother multiple ideas, but they always involved some sort of construction, and she was just not motivated enough for that. Then came my epiphany! The cabinet all the way at the end of the kitchen — the one that was built at a funny angle and was too narrow to be used for anything practical — would be perfect. If we could just have someone cut a narrow slit into all of its shelves for the broom and mop handles, it would become a spectacular broom closet! Skeptical at first, my mother couldn’t understand why I was so excited. She had, however, learned to trust me when it comes to all things organizational, and the next time the handyman was over, she had him do as I suggested. And thus was born my mother’s broom closet. A broom closet seems like an inconsequential thing. People design custom cabinets for their mixers, their cutting boards and even their spic-

es, while the cleaning supplies don’t get a second thought. When something spills, though, no one wants to run to four different parts of the house collecting the items necessary to clean it up. That’s why keeping all cleaning supplies together is a game changer when it comes to cleaning messes fast, which is essential when running a busy home. When setting up your broom closet, you’ll want to include any items that you use when cleaning. That would mean your broom, dustpan, scrub brush, mop, bucket and, ideally, if you have the room, your vacuum cleaner and its accessories. Hanging up a mop and broom holder will keep all these items in one place and will make it much quicker to grab the right item. Make sure to get a holder with enough slots to accommodate all of your things, plus one or two extra so you’re not stuck if you add to your collection. Most holders come with hooks in addition to the slots, from which you can hang brushes and shmattes. If not, you should hang a couple of hooks yourself to keep things nice and organized. Smaller items that belong in the broom closet are cleaning detergents, shmattes, paper towels, rubber gloves and garbage bags. A shopping bag holder, which can be stuck to the wall or inside of the door, is a great thing to have, as extra shopping bags always come in handy. Depending on the format of your broom closet, pick a shelf or area in which to store extra cleaning detergents; it’s always smart to keep these on hand, and they have a very long shelf life. The bottles that are in use now should be kept in a cleaning caddy. This will keep them accessible and will also be very helpful to your cleaning lady. I have seen many people use the extra space in their broom closet to store bulk packages of food and drinks. While this can be very convenient and even sensible if your broom closet is large and has space for excess storage, be very careful that you cleaning solutions do not come into contact with your food items. Never use your broom closet to store open food products as most cleaning fluids are toxic and not something you want in your family members’ mouths. As a side note, make sure to keep anything poisonous out of reach of young children or behind a locked door. While wiping up a spill is not an activity anyone particularly enjoys, it is one that we all have to deal with, often multiple times a day. Whether it’s a cup of apple juice, a box of Cheerios or even a full bottle of oil, much of the strain is lifted when all it takes is opening that one door to your broom closet and being able to quickly pull out exactly what you need to clean it up. No more searching for the Windex or a shmatte; it’s all there, waiting to be used.

Instilling Love, Warmth and Mesiras Nefesh

A

As parents, we want our children to be the best that they can be. From the time each child is born, we often look for signs that prove that this child is outstanding in Torah, wisdom or middos. In the first article, we mentioned that we live in a fastpaced society, where everyone wants instant results. It is this attitude that often makes us wish for an “instant” tzaddik or tzadekes, a child who is perfect without us having to put in many years of effort. It is said in the name of Reb Yerucham Levovitz, zt”l, that the reason we don’t have talmidei chachamim who are as great as those in past generations is because we want to see quick results, without properly nurturing each child during his or her youth with love, care and trust. When we express these feeling toward our children, it builds their feelings of self-worth in their hearts. Later, when they grow older, they can express the same feelings toward Hashem Yisborach. The Torah begins (Bereishis 1:1) with the words, “Bereishis bara Elokim…” Rashi Hakadosh writes that the Torah uses the word “Elokim” because Hashem first wanted to create the world with midas hadin, but Hashem saw that the world would not be able to exist like that, so He created midas harachamim. The same principle can be applied to the chinuch of a child, who is likened to an entire world. Just as the world needs both justice and mercy to exist, so too does the chinuch of a child require both judgment as well as warmth and loving-kindness. When it comes to expressing our feelings of love, care and trust, we are often faced with a nisayon, because our children are… children! They don’t always behave as they should. Moreover,

when we are dealing with workrelated stress or a financial crisis, it is even more difficult to tolerate their antics and express warmth and love. At such times, real mesiras nefesh is required to express love to our children. Even when we need to teach them about a mistake they made, we still need to convey unconditional love and acceptance toward them, just as Hashem deals

DID YOU KNOW?

In Latin, a rainbow is called an arcus pluvius, meaning rainy arch, which is why we know it as a rainbow. The bow in rainbow (or bogen in raigenbogen) is why this time of year finds Yiddishe kinderlach the world over playing with toy bows and arrows. The connection? Not a single rainbow appeared during the lifetime of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.

White light is simply all colors combined. In rainbows, raindrops both refract and reflect the sun’s light, and since each color is light of a different wavelength, they bounce off at different angles. That’s why the light splits and bounces back to us as separate colors.

The rainbow phenomenon essentially occurs in each droplet of rain, but since it’s too small to see with the naked eye, we only see it when the light bounces off millions of raindrops, creating a full rainbow.

In the sky, rainbows are higher when the sun is lower, and lower when the sun is higher.

Since even a minute change of angle creates a different rainbow, no two people see the exact same rainbow!

Despite what folk tales tell you, the end of a rainbow will forever elude you...

ROY G. BIV… OR NOT?

In ancient Greece, there were many opinions regarding which colors (or color, in one case) rainbows contain. One opinion was that the rainbow contains only... purple! Others claimed that, no, there were three colors in the rainbow: purple, yellow-green, and red. And who was to argue?

148 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 2, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

The world grew smarter during the Renaissance, and the accepted position on the colors of the rainbow changed. At that point, rainbows were believed to consist of four colors: red, blue, green and yellow. However, the discussion continued, and in the 17th century, it was decided that rainbows contain the five colors red, yellow, green, blue and purple. But the talk about colors wasn’t over yet. In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton added orange and indigo, and this left

us with the very familiar Roy G. Biv acronym (for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) we know today. However, this might not be the end of the story... Since there are no defined borders to these colors, there are countless shades as the rainbow bleeds from one hue to the next! While we accept what is culturally known, is this the reality? Perhaps not, after all.

BOW… OR NOT? Rainbows, under very specific circumstances, can sometimes form complete circles! The lower the sun, the higher the arc, and when the arc goes high enough, there may be a full circle of light. However, even when this rare phenomenon does occur, we usually can’t see it because the horizon we see doesn’t allow for a full view. Mountain climbers, who generally have a higher view, sometimes do see more of the circle, and some pilots, who have an even better view, have reported seeing the entire ring of color.

SINGLE… OR NOT?

While rainbows are magically, almost hauntingly, beautiful, double rainbows are almost doubly as beautiful. A double rainbow occurs when light bounces inside the droplets of water more than once, resulting in a faint, inverted pattern of color. In very rare cases, even third or fourth rainbows are visible. Between two rainbows, the strip of sky is darker because the light from that section is not visible. This band of darkness is called Alexander’s band after the person who first discovered it. I must fix my mistakes. I’ll call the bakery and graciously apologize to the owner.

We already called Sapir and signed a contract with them. Listen, your service is terrible: You don’t meet your deadlines, your phone isn’t clear and your manager is not too normal…

Now I must apologize to Gavriel. He can’t know that my factory is connected to missionary activity, or I’m in trouble. Why isn’t Gavriel answering?

And still the biggest issue… What do I do about the director of the central missionary organization?

It’s all because of Sapir. I must get rid of them, and fast!

What will I say to my backers from overseas?

I need money! Money! Money!

I’m just losing.

What about all the missionary activities I promised to fund?

Recap: Tom, flustered by the complaints coming from the bakery and the confrontation with the missionary headquarters, takes a few calls at once, and divulges the wrong things to the wrong people.
