TOWN SQUARE | 59 ROUTE 59 | 845.426.6500 Canada unlimited calling: $5/month | Global unlimited calling inlcuding Israel: $15/month *some countries exluded For customers who choose to keep their home phone number, the porting process can take 2–10 business days. Eligibility to port number varies. Customers must provide their own home phone equipment. Service is not necessarily equivalent to landline phone service. Wireless Home Phone T2000 is designed to operate anywhere within the Verizon coverage area and should provide coverage that's consistent with your current Verizon Wireless device experience. While the Wireless Home Phone T2000 does have a backup battery, if the home phone to which it is connected requires external electric power to operate, service (including the ability to make and receive 911 calls) will not be available during a power outage. Battery power consumption depends on factors such as network configuration, carrier network, and signal strength.
A one-time activation fee of $40.00 is applied to the first bill.

STOP To the driver of the green Altima with Jersey plates who drove past a school bus stop sign Sunday morning: Every morning, I wait with my son on a very busy street, in the pouring rain and freezing cold, to make sure drivers like you don’t plow into him while he innocently crosses the street to go to cheder. Please, even though you might be late for work or miss the next minyan, it’s still not worth passing a stopped school bus and risking a child’s life. May we be zoche to never hear of tragedy caused by careless acts. Thank you, A (Rightfully Concerned) Mother of Children
ALLERGIES TACKLED RIGHT (Re: Something to Sneeze At, Issue 147) I would like to thank Ruchy Reese for the beautiful and informative article she wrote regarding allergies. I am writing this letter to help bring additional awareness to the Monsey community regarding the use of topical steroids. My son suffers from seasonal allergies, but his symptoms are not limited to itchy, puffy, watery eyes; along with the heat comes terrible itching under his knees and elbows. Last summer it got so bad that his soft baby skin started resembling skin with bad eczema. The worst part was seeing my happy-go-lucky three-year-old moan in his sleep while scratching his hands and feet. At first the the doctor told me I should try Vaseline, but after seeing no results, she prescribed topical steroids, saying that “1 to 3 percent of cortisone won’t harm him. Just dab a little bit onto his rash and you’ll see results immediately. It’s the only thing that will work.” But after seeing what steroids did to my neighbor’s child — who was suffered terribly from TSW (damage from steroids) — I was determined not to use cortisone. I was, however, willing to try anything without steroids that would heal the rash and the accompanying constant itching.

I was in touch with Ruchy Reese during that time, and I was amazed at how a busy mother took so much of her precious time to help me figure out how to deal with the allergy and ease the itching. I followed her guidance, using Vaseline and Balmex and applying it right after his bath. I also gave him Zyrtec, which I found very helpful as an itch relief. The itching woke him often throughout the night, and each time, I’d apply yet another layer of Balmex and he’d calm down. I knew I was doing the right thing by not using the cream with steroids and, baruch Hashem, I saw results! With Hashem’s help, I got through it! As soon as the weather turned cooler toward the end of the summer, his skin slowly became smoother and smoother. This season I was prepared, and therefore kept moisturizing his body from after Pesach. The longawaited nice weather arrived, and so did his allergies. I’m following Ruchy Reese’s suggestions, and I’m hopeful that, iy”H, my son will have an easier summer allergy-wise . Wishing everyone a happy and healthy summer! A Monsey Mother

A REMEDY NOT MENTIONED (Re: Something to Sneeze At, Issue 147) I would like to let readers know that acupuncture is another option for taking care of seasonal allergies. I saw amazing results with my daughter and know many people who are symptom-free after only two or three treatment sessions of acupuncture. A Reader
RE: RAISING THE BAR
POSITIVE LIFESTYLE CHANGES
(Inbox, Issue 147) I was somewhat surprised reading last week’s letter regarding linen closets. Although the ideas don’t pertain to me, as all the linen sets I own are on various beds in the house, I just loved looking at the pictures. I enjoy features like these that showcase pretty things. If not in my own house (without the need to maintain it!), then at least it’s there for my viewing pleasure! No Pressure Taken
(Re: Something to Sneeze At, Issue 147) I read this week’s article on allergies with interest, as it is an issue my family faced. After seeing miraculous recovery, I feel the need to comment that the sentence “Lifestyle changes alone can seldom relieve an allergy sufferer from symptoms completely” should not be stated as a fact. My husband had a terrible case of spring allergies. With the wonderful guidance of Mrs. Blimy Wassertheil, he implemented some powerful lifestyle changes that have made him feel like a liberated man, and he has been thoroughly enjoying Hashem’s gift of spring for the past two years. I know a few others with similar success stories.
I read last week’s letter to the editor regarding fancy linen closets, and I completely agree with the writer. Since when do our linen closets need to look like display cases? Pictures of such elaborate linen closets set unnecessary standards. Too much social pressure is put these days to have everything people own look gorgeous. Have gorgeous closets. Push gorgeous carriages. Buy only top-of-the-line clothes for yourself and your children... Where will it end? Also, closets have doors for a reason. Nobody has to see what’s going on inside. When I’m a guest at someone’s house, I don’t ask

them to show me what the inside of their linen closet looks like. One more point: How many busy mothers actually have the time (and space — I actually noticed a lot of wasted space in the pictures of those linen closets) to make their closets look so gorgeous? Between holding down a full-time job to coming home and taking care of the kids, the last thing on my mind is what my linen closet looks like. I make sure everything is folded and there are always enough clean towels, but that’s it. A Busy Mother
SHABBOS ALERT I would like to inform the tzibbur that there are boxes of pull-out tissues — generally of the smaller and cheaper varieties, which are sold under various names — that are problematic for Shabbos use. Most of the tissues in the box are not connected, but every so often (after four or five unconnected tissues) there are tissues that are connected, and it is assur to separate them on Shabbos. Please be aware and check what you buy. Also if you see these boxes in shuls or yeshivos open on Shabbos (as I have), please alert those in charge. Tizku l’mitzvos. S.F.
CHIZUK INDEED (Re: Chizuk on Chinuch Series) I’d like to extend a huge thank you to The Monsey View for your Chizuk on Chinuch column. I always knew that being harsh to children can stem from insecurity on the parent’s part, but I never knew the positive way to go about parenting until I read Rabbi Steiman’s articles. It was through this column that I learned what “yes to do,” and I found this very helpful and useful. Rabbi Steiman displays a strong understanding of the parent as well as of the child, with practical guidance on how to balance the fine line between discipline and warmth. He opened my eyes to the fact that I need to be proactive in learning about chinuch. Please continue to publish such articles. Yasher koach, S.Z. EDITOR’S BULLETIN: Due to the huge amount of feedback we received on our feature about sourdough, we will be publishing a follow-up article that will address the questions that readers posed. Feel free to email your questions to comments@themonseyview. com. We welcome your feedback, comments and suggestions. Please email comments@themonseyview.com.

Dear Basya,
CHAPTER 6
My question is in regard to Shavuos. I have been sticking to a balanced food plan successfully since Pesach, and I really don’t want to mess up now. However, cheesecake is my downfall! It is one of the hardest things for me to resist. Please advise! Cheesecake Lover
Dear Cheesecake Lover, I agree with you! If cheesecake is that important to you, you should have some! Here’s how to do it right: 1. Have a snack before you are faced with temptation. For example, if you are headed to your in-laws for a milchig kiddush, make sure to have a yogurt and a fruit before you go, so that you don’t go hungry. 2. Survey the scene: Take a look around to see what are the “must-haves.” Fill your plate with portion-controlled amounts of what you decide are your favorites, and stay away from the rest. 3. Have a seat, eat slowly, and enjoy every bite! Do not feel guilty about your choices. Count your portion as a treat. 4. Realize that you will want more! Throw your plate out, take a
80 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 16, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
drink of water, and move away from the area where the food is laid out. Remind yourself that all the pleasure is in the first few bites. Here’s a little secret. Most people gain weight on Shavuos, not from the small dairy delicacies, but from overdoing it with challah, kugel and heavy meals. Because the night meals of Shavuos are particularly late, we highly recommend choosing matzah rather than challah — even whole wheat or spelt challah. Also, make sure to have enough cooked and raw vegetables to fill you up so you can avoid starchy, fatty kugels. Enjoy the yom tov, as well as the feeling of staying healthy and in control! Good yom tov! Basya Please send in your nutrition question to info@nutritionbytanya.com, Attn: Basya.

WHEN I WAS IN SEMINARY, there was a girl, Dina*, in our dormitory who was a bit socially awkward and did not have many friends. One day, a group of friends and I were in my room, making plans to go shopping. As we were about to leave, Dina walked in and asked what was going on. Somebody mentioned that we were about to go shopping, and Dina said, “Great! I’ll just go finish up one thing and get ready to go.” With that, Dina ran out of the room. A few girls looked at each other with annoyance. One brazen girl stood up and said, “You know what? She didn’t ask and we didn’t agree, so I think we have no obligation to wait for her. Let’s go now, otherwise we’ll be forced to spend the whole afternoon dealing with Dina rather than enjoying our shopping.” Most of the girls agreed and stood up to join her. My best friend and I looked at each other with horror. Would we have the strength to take a stand? Going against the group is not something teenage girls like doing. Unsure of how to handle the situation, my friend and I began to follow the other girls down the hallway, but we’d only walked a few steps when we both stopped. “I can’t do it to Dina. It’s not right,” I said. “Neither can I,” agreed my friend. “As difficult as Dina can be, we can’t just walk out on her. It would be cruel.” With that, my friend and I turned around and walked back to Dina’s room, and the three of us went shopping together. Here is the big picture of this story: I have no recollection of what stores we went to or if we bought anything that day, and I doubt the other girls remember by now either — but I will never forget the horrible choice that we faced, and that pivotal moment of deciding to do what is right. It says in this week’s parsha, “Va’ani hinei lakachti… — Behold, I have taken the Levi’im in place of every firstborn… among the Bnei Yisroel, and the Levi’im shall be Mine” (Bamidbar 3:12). Rashi explains that, originally, the bechor of every family was meant to do
86 / THE MONSEY VIEW
the Avodah. However, after the Cheit Ha’eigel, they lost this right. The Levi’im, who did not take part in the Cheit Ha’eigel, were chosen to take their place. The Sfas Emes says in the name of his grandfather, the Chiddushei HaRim, that it wasn’t only the Levi’im who chose not to participate in the cheit ha’eigel. In fact, it was only a small minority of people who did participate; most of the Bnei Yisroel were not involved. Why, then, were only the Levi’im granted a special closeness to Hashem, and not the remaining majority of the Bnei Yisroel who likewise did not sin? The Chiddushei HaRim answers that although most of the Bnei Yisroel did not participate, they also did not take a stand against it. When Moshe Rabbeinu called out, “Whoever is for Hashem, come to me!” only Shevet Levi heeded his call. By doing so, the Levi’im made a powerful statement that they disapproved of what had taken place. The majority of the Bnei Yisroel may have chosen not to participate in what they knew to be wrong; nevertheless, they were not strong enough to take an active stand against it. The ability to stand for what is right is a defining quality of the Jewish people, one that is engraved in our spiritual DNA. One of the reasons Avraham Avinu was called Avraham Ha’Ivri was that the whole world stood on the side of avodah zarah, and he stood alone on the opposite side. The Chazon Ish was born in Belarus and lived in Europe for the first 55 years of his life. A bochur who had been drafted into the army approached him for chizuk and a bracha. The Chazon Ish told him that if an animal is able to swim upstream, against the current of a river, then it is considered to be of sound body for shechitah (Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah 58). The Chazon Ish assured the bochur that if he would swim against the current, standing strong for Torah values in opposition to the ways of the other soldiers, then he would be declared kosher. May we all be fearless in standing strong for what is right, even if it means going against the status quo, and merit a special closeness to Hashem.

chool is almost out, and you can already hear those notso-distant “Mommy, I’m bored” cries. Vacation days are rife with opportunity to create fond family memories, but you’re at a loss; how to harvest those opportunities? Somehow, no matter how swollen your toy box or loaded your game closet, toys and games just don’t do it. Boating isn’t suited for the younger ones, and the park draws upturned noses from the older ones. The only means of entertainment at home is food, and when the noise level reaches its peak, you take the family out for — more food! Because, where else? By the time those “I’m bored” complaints fade into rhythmic breathing from beneath the summer quilts, you can use an outing yourself. Where to, though? You’re not the first to ponder that question. If you strain your ears, you may just hear a collective echo of “where” bouncing off our streets. But one of our community members
went one step further and turned that “where” into a “here!”
Hobby House “For too long, there hasn’t been a heimish means of entertainment for our youth, especially our teens,” says Laya Heilpern of Hobby House. “It was time we filled that void and provided a recreational outlet that offers stimulating activities for our children, as well as peace of mind for their parents.” Now, Hobby House provides a safe and familiar environment for our children, where they can expand their passions in a nurturing atmosphere.
Creativity Studio Hobby House is not just a painting class for children; it is an all-inclusive studio for adults as well, complete with a café lounge, refreshments and drinks. You can come to master the art, or simply relax and let the colors flow freely. Hobby House is testament to the refrain

your to-do list. And with its convenient location, you’re always just around the corner.
No Hidden Fees
“creativity has no age,” where all ages find their place. Whether as a day trip with the little ones, a serene coffee break with that special someone, or a night out with friends, there’s something for everyone! And with over 80 seats in their spacious studio, there’s plenty of space to create your own peaceful haven.
A House of Hobby “We launched Hobby House in our basement about 13 years ago,” shares Laya. “Over the years, with our clientele constantly growing, we realized it was time we expanded so we could offer our customers an experience rather than just a craft.” So now, over a decade after opening its doors, Hobby House has relocated to present to you a magical experience in their new and expanded location.
What saps excitement more than those sneaky hidden fees or mandatory add-on costs? We’ve all been there at some point or another. We think we’re going for an affordable outing, until we are hit with, “Oh, parents must pay admission to accompany their child,” or “The special footwear is mandatory, and must be purchased at an additional fee.” As exciting as the excursion seemed up until that point, these charges undoubtedly put a damper on the entire stay. But not at Hobby House. Here you pick your favorite craft, and the rest is on the House! Supplies, brushes, paints and even smocks — you’re supplied with all you need to craft to your heart’s content! And with no studio or hourly fees, you’re free to stay as long as you’d like!
What, When and Where
A Sneak Peek
You’ve finally found where to go, but now the problem is when to go. Your ears hear “Mommy, let’s go!” but your mind whispers, “Errands!” Well, you no longer must choose between entertaining the kids and tackling tasks. Simply get your kids settled with their favorite crafts, and you’re free to cross some errands off
Whether you’re a mosaic maven or a plaster pro, Hobby House offers an extensive selection of crafts to suit every taste and budget. Design unique home décor or create your very own dishware! And with the selection constantly being updated, you’ll always find inspiration in something new! But even if you feel
like you don’t have a creative bone in your body, the tranquil ambience allows even the creatively-challenged to create their unique masterpiece.
Unplug and Unwind With no time to spare during the day, night is the only time many of us get to unwind. Hobby House knows that well, which is why they leave their doors open two nights a week. Nurture your creative side with some craft therapy, and when you’re done, just leave the chaos behind!
Take it to Go! Your daughter’s bas mitzvah is coming up, and with each passing day, her guest list only gets longer. You’re glad she’s got herself so many friends, but you’re wondering how in the world you’re going to entertain a houseful of energetic kids. But the job doesn’t have to fall on you! Bring Hobby House to your
event, party or camp, and watch the creative juices flow! From tiny tots to picky teens, there’s something to wow any age group!
They say the best thing about memories is making them. So this year, paint some fond memories at the Hobby House, one craft at a time. 92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 16, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Tappan Zee Bridge Demolition Hits Major Milestone DEMOLITION of the old Tappan Zee Bridge continues, with crews removing a 100 million–pound chunk of the center span last week, leaving a 532-foot gap in the middle of the bridge’s superstructure. Crews have been working steadily since October to remove the retired bridge, which has been carrying cars from Westchester to Rockland since 1955. It took 27 hours for the massive steel section to be taken down by hydraulic jacks, reported The Journal News. Thruway Authority Director Jamey Barbas told the media that the segment of the bridge that was removed, the first of five to face a similar fate, will be dismantled and recycled. “It could be your car one day,” said Barbas. Construction crews will be focusing their efforts on the eastern half of the old bridge’s superstructure, which is supported by a concrete tower and weighs 4,560 tons, before turning their attention to the easternmost portion of the bridge, which weighs 5,350 tons. Both of those segments will be lowered onto a barge so that they can be transported away from the area. Finally, crews will repeat the same process on the western side of the bridge. Once the entire Tappan Zee Bridge will be removed, crews will finally be able to complete the last portions of the new Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, whose twin spans will
carry eight lanes of traffic in each direction. The Thruway Authority has yet to announce a final completion date for the entire $3.9 billion bridge project, saying only that it will be sometime this year. Once the new bridge is fully operational, it will include a walking and biking path on the westbound bridge and may also feature a dedicated bus lane on both spans.
Springtime Allergy Season Gradually Starting to Taper Off THE BLOOMING TREES that make spring a visual delight for so many are the harbingers of bad news for those with springtime allergies, but thankfully, pollen levels tend to taper off after the first two weeks of May, bringing at least some measure of relief to those plagued by red, watery eyes and endless sneezes. After an unpredictable winter and a spring that can’t quite seem to get its act together, allergy sufferers have been faced with high levels of tree pollen in our area and, according to New York Presbyterian Hospital, more than 50 million people are afflicted nationwide. Pollen is released into the air by trees, grasses and weeds and can often be noticed as a greenish-yellow powder coating cars and other outdoor surfaces. Because it is airborne and can travel for miles, those who suffer from seasonal allergies — the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States — have a difficult
96 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 16, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
time during peak season. Over-the-counter and prescription medicines, including nasal sprays and eye drops, can help those who have springtime allergies get through the worst of the season, and in more severe cases, a regimen of allergy shots may be helpful. Other common sense ideas that keep pollen from entering the home include keeping windows closed, showering and putting on fresh clothing when coming in from outside, wearing glasses or sunglasses to keep eyes pollen-free, and limiting outdoor activities between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m when pollen counts peak daily. This year’s annual report by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America ranks the New York area as number 25 on the list of Most Challenging Places to Live with Spring Allergies. The top offenders? McAllen, Texas; Louisville, Kentucky; Jackson, Mississippi; Memphis, Tennessee; and San Antonio, Texas.

Nasse v nishma They acted and then they listened “People eat junk food without batting an eye. Offer them something healthy and they become researchers”
“Losing 20lbs in 6 months”. Is a goal. This is a specific goal. It has a time that you would like to achieve the goal by.
Today, before anyone starts to act for the benefit of themselves they first ask 100 different question.
Step 2: Dig Deep
We need to go back to our roots. We need to start acting more and questioning less. Once we start taking action the struggle is to keep doing it. A great way to help you stay consistent and motivated is to have meaningful goals, as we discussed last week.
If you aren't willing to dive deep into your own self (that's where the answers are) you won’t be able to be successful with this exercise. You need to allow some vulnerability.
Now that you have a goal we need to dig deep. Find you real reason. We do this by asking why. 5 times over. (Note: it could be 4 it could be more. about 5 is the good number) To help show you how this exercise works in action let's give a hypothetical story between me and Moshe, a typical client I might see.
The self discovery behind your true motives to achieve a goal could be somewhat hard and frustrating.
Moshe: “I want to lose 20 lbs in 6 month.”
Today I want to show you a formula that will help you uncover the true intention on embarking on a healthy lifestyle. With this you can stay equipped and get through those tough days.
Moshe: “My daughters wedding is in 6 months and I wants to look great for the pictures.”
5 WHYS
Moshe: “Well… it is really my wife. She wants me to look good for the pictures.”
Tzviki: “Why?”
Tzviki: “Why?”
The '5 Whys' exercise is a great way to get down to the core route to the problem. It is Tzviki: “Why?” a rather simple exercise to perform. Moshe: “Happy wife, happy life. I want to Although it isn't complex, it does not mean make her happy.” it is easy to do. Tzviki: “Why?” I have however, found a couple of issues with this particular exercise which I will Moshe: “Because I believe that I need to share once we have gone through the be the best husband I can be for my wife.’ exercise Here are the steps to performing this You see how we went from “Losing weight” exercise of the 5 Whys a wish. Step 1: Create your goal
“To losing 20lbs in 6 month.”
If you don't have a goal we can never know why you want to go there.
“To losing 20lbs in 6 months so I can look good for my daughters picture making my wife the happiest she can be.”
2. Why puts you on the defense The question why may come across as an integration of sorts. This may make you react in a defensive way not allowing you to dive deep to the core problem. You can change the question to “what is your intention of achieving x?” Once you have found your real reason for going on your quest. Then you got to take action. Step 1: Remind yourself every morning and night what your goals are. Step 2: Start to look at what areas you can improve. Step 3: Take the necessary steps to achieving your goals
Free Personalized Weight Loss Plan Want a plan that is going to not only help you lose weight but maintain it as well? Here is what you need to do: Step 1: Email your request to tzviki@tzvismith.com Use the subject line “Personalized Holistic Weight Loss Plan”. Step 2: Fill out the assessment form that I will be replying back to your email request. Step 3: Once you send the form back I will assess and create your personalized plan Step 4: Face to face meeting where we go over your plan and show you exactly how to be successful.
Set a goal. Here are some of the concerns that may come up with the exercise.
“Losing weight” isn't a goal. It is a dream. A wish. Something that doesn't really come 1 .You need to be ready true.
At the end of the meeting you will have a choice of coming on board as a client or you can take the plan & try to succeed on your own! If not now, when?

Knock, knock, knock… tap, tap, tap… It is 5:30 in the morning; so states my alarm clock. Okay, it stopped — I must have been dreaming about the latest knock-knock joke. And then, the rap, rap, rap resumes with an ever-increasing staccato tempo. I stumble bleary-eyed to the door, stub my toe (the one with a bandage), and yank the door open, ready for battle. Ohhh… “Why hello, Woody, and a fine morning to you, too!” Have any of you had a similar encounter with a woodpecker? They feature prominently in Rockland County, especially in areas where acorn-producing oak trees abound — as acorns are one of their favorite foods. In late April they start looking for an available nesting area, deriving maniacal pleasure in boring golf-ball-sized holes into the siding of your home with their titanium beaks. (You’re in the direct line of fire if your house has a brown exterior, since they seem to gravitate to the color brown.) If they set up shop under the eaves, you’re in for some knockin’ and bangin’ until you seal off their entry portals with metal sheeting, although wait until June, after the babies have grown and flown. Woody’s saving grace is his beauty — he’s black and white with a splash of bright red around the head and crown, sometimes sporting a ladder design down his back. If you spot a midsized bird in an upright, vertical position drumming on a tree (at the rate of 20 times a second), you’ve undeniably identified Woody.

Meet another mischief-maker, the lord-of-the-manor imperial blue jay. Who would imagine that a bird so graceful, arrayed by nature in his indigo blue garb so resplendent, should harbor so much mischief? He has an uncanny ability to seek out nests with freshly laid eggs and devour them all. His tastes also extend to hawks and other aggressive birds. As a snack, he’ll dine on suet along with acorns and sunflower seeds — of course, that’ll mean chasing every other bird away from any given available feeder. To give credit where credit is due, I’ll point out that Jay is very intelligent, a patriarch, and an upright family man who takes care of his brood admirably. Jay is not the only striking bird in town. He has serious competition. Another contender in the beauty contest is the American goldfinch. It’s one of my favorite feathered friends. The male sports knockyour-socks-off bright yellow plumage, while his spouse will have a more muted, almost drab, olive coloring.

Their intense vividness makes them an obvious target, so to confuse predators, they zoom around in a zigzag flight pattern, never flying in a straight line. These perky tweeties are related to the canary songbirds, though their singing gene is absent. Instead, they converse with a series of short, squeaky, high-pitched chirps. It’s fascinating to watch them dine upside down. (Yes, a finch feeder has the perches positioned above the seed ports to accommodate this behavior.) Only fine cuisine for our Goldy, in the form of teeny black nyger seeds (at 25 dollars a bag — gasp) — no coarse stuff like corn or sunflower seeds. Surprisingly, finches can be quite possessive of “their” feeders and will literally chase away those not of their clan. (It’s a good idea to hang the second feeder some distance away.) The takeaway – some bright yellow finch feeders filled to the brim with nyger seed is all you need to attract these golden beauts by the droves. On a typical day, one can see hordes of finches happily feasting with great gusto at my Goldfinch Café. All seeds that drop down to the ground are quickly gobbled up, faster than the speed of light, by the mourning doves — so aptly named for their mournful cooing. ways be seen in groups of two. Mr. and Mrs. Dove will predictably travel together, as a pair, for the duration of their lives. When you spot one, rest assured, its spouse is right nearby. They are sometimes confused with their relatives, the pigeons, but they are not comparable at all — mourning doves are calm and unhurried, soft-spoken and well-behaved. (Sounds like a shidduch resume!) Bring on the world’s tiniest birds, the humming-

birds. Typically, their nest will be the size of a thimble and the egg only half an inch in size! I kid you not. The female is wholly responsible for house-hunting and will fashion a nest using soft stretchable materials, like spider silk, to accommodate her growing babies. These birdies are colorful, with iridescent feathers that glow in the sun. Their name comes from the fact that, as a result of them flapping their wings so fast, (about 80 times per second!), they make a humming noise (really more of a zzzzing sound that makes you want to seek cover). These kamikaze pilots can fly right, left, up, down, backward, and even upside down. They are also able to hover, seemingly motionless, by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern. Since they love the color red, all hummingbird feeders are fire-engine red. They especially adore tubular flowers like red bee balms, purple petunias, crimson cardinal climbers and

STOP AND THINK FOR A MINUTE — isn’t it נפלאות הבורא that a garden is chock-full of so many flying birds (and other flyMOURNING DOVE ing creatures), and yet, not once do they ever collide midair? It is beyond awesome that there’s a definite order to the pathways in which each one flies; one’ll swoop, the other darts, the third hovers motionless, while the fourth gyrates — all in perfect harmony. This is the hallmark of Hashem’s designation of Nature. In His infinite wisdom, He created a perfect world in which thousands of his varied creations coexist in perfect bliss; every briyah with its own specialized design comingles with another amicably. So, let our feathered friends set an example for us. Let us be birds of a feather who flock together; let us “live and let live” peacefully and contentedly. Shavuos marks the yahrtzeit of the father of chassidus, Reb Yisroel ben Eliezer, the holy Baal Shem Tov, zya. From the time of his youth, Reb Yisroel displayed unnatural strength of character that later led to his becoming renowned for his unique derech in Torah and avodah. The Baal Shem Tov was a descendant of Dovid Hamelech, who likewise passed away on Shavuos. SUPERNATURAL DAWN Reb Eliezer, the father of the Baal Shem Tov, lived in a little village. Though the village was small, Reb Eliezer performed the mitzvah of hachnasas orchim on a large scale. He set watchmen at the corners of the village and asked them to inform him as soon as any visitor arrived. He didn’t want any stranger to the village to worry where he should turn first. Reb Eliezer provided his guests with everything they needed, from a place to sleep

to satisfying food, ensuring that they lacked nothing. He would welcome the guests into his home warmly, giving them a donation prior to serving them a tasty meal. This, he knew, would allow his poor, weary guests to eat contentedly, with a happy heart. He recognized that the underlying concern of every poor person was to obtain a few coins with which to provide for his family. In Shamayim, Reb Eliezer’s great overtures to complete the mitzvah so sincerely did not go unnoticed, and his efforts were lavishly praised. It was decided that Reb Eliezer would be tested with a nisayon in this area. It was Shabbos afternoon when Eliyahu Hanavi, dressed as a pauper, approached Reb Eliezer. Wearing tattered clothes, he held a stick in one hand and a torn pouch containing some meager possessions in the other. Reb Eliezer greeted him with a friendly gut Shabbos, despite the blatant transgression of the holy day. He would in no way contemplate embarrassing his poor visitor. He served shalosh seudos and later melaveh malkah. On Sunday morning, before the pauper left, Reb Eliezer gave him a generous donation and wished him well. Still, so as not to bring him any humiliation, Reb Eliezer deliberately refrained from mentioning the chillul Shabbos. “Know,” the poor guest finally said, “I am in fact Eliyahu Hanavi. I was sent to test you, and you’ve passed the test! In this zechus, you will merit a son who will light up the eyes

of Klal Yisroel.” Sure enough, Reb Eliezer was soon blessed with the birth of Yisroel, later known as the Baal Shem Tov. His birth was nothing short of miraculous. Reb Yisroel was born to elderly parents; his father was one hundred and his mother, Sara, was ninety! When the Baal Shem Tov was only one and a half years old, his father passed away. Just before his petirah, Reb Eliezer took his son on his lap and said, “My day has come, and I wasn’t granted the privilege of raising you. I want you always to remember that Hashem is with you; you don’t need to fear anyone or anything.” At the time of his faThe Baal Shem Tov's wooden shul in Medzhibozh, Ukraine. ther’s yahrtzeit, his mother passed away. He pounced on the group, causing them all to scatter in every direction in great fright. Soon the daily routine stopped. The children, and their parents, were afraid to walk to cheder. Yisroel, however, did not give up. Remembering his father’s words never to have any fear, he made his rounds among the parents, begging them to allow their children to come with him to the melamed. “Why be mevatel Torah learning? Should we allow an animal to prevent so many precious kinderlach from drawing nearer to their Father in Heaven?” He convinced the parents that he would care for the children, protect them and ensure their safe arrival at the cheder. His words were heard, and soon he was back on task, ushering his

little charges to cheder to the backdrop of pleasant, emotional tunes. The sorcerer continued to play his part as wild wolf. Once again, he sprang upon the group with bloodcurdling yelps. The children trembled, but Yisroel did not lose himself. Holding a strong walking stick for this very purpose, he smacked the wolf viciously. The wolf fell to the ground, dead. The next day, the dead body of the sorcerer was found on the ground, just where the wolf had fallen dead. Since the wolf was in fact the sorcerer, the sorcerer himself was slain when the wolf was killed.
NOONTIME SPLENDOR A while later, Reb Yisroel traveled to a town on the outskirts of Brodt where he became a melamed. The residents recognized what a sharp and wise lamdan they had in their midst, and before long, people were turning to him for advice. Reb Avraham, the father of Rav Gershon Kitover, Rosh Beis Din of Brodt, once sought to settle a dispute with someone who lived in that

nearby town. When Reb Avraham asked him to come to the beis din in Brodt, the fellow replied, “Why come to Brodt? In our town there is a very learned melamed. Every time an argument is brought before him, he explains the psak so clearly that both sides leave happy. Let us pose our questions to him.”
an interest in taking me as a sonin-law, and I don’t want to be disrespectful to them after all they have done for me. The only way I could agree is if we write up a tenaim secretly.” He further stipulated, “The tenaim should not mention my Torah or smartness. Please write only,
“In this zechus, you will merit a son who will light up the eyes of Klal Yisroel.” Reb Avraham agreed, and soon he, too, was astonished at the brilliance of the young Baal Shem Tov. Reb Yisroel explained a pshat in Rambam with sterling clarity and sharpness, and then went on to settle the complicated disagreement, leaving both parties content. Buoyed by his high esteem for the young, unmarried scholar, Reb Avraham decided he was the perfect match for his divorced daughter. He turned to Reb Yisroel in private with the proposal. Reb Yisroel responded, “It sounds like a good idea. However, many of the wealthy members of the community have
‘Yisroel ben Eliezer.’” A tenaim was drawn up. Not an extra word of praise or detail was written upon it, not even the name of the place. Reb Avraham returned to Brodt. While traveling, he contracted an illness from which he passed away shortly thereafter. No one knew of the secret engagement other than the Baal Shem Tov himself. When Rav Gershon Kitover received his father’s kesavim, he found the tenaim contract among them and looked it over, puzzled. His father had been a well-known person. How had he closed a shidduch with-
out anyone’s knowledge, and more so, with a haplessly identified “Yisroel ben Eliezer,” whose family and locale were unknown? Still, he turned to his sister and stated, “If our father favored this young man, we may not differ.” Meanwhile, Reb Yisroel waited until the period that he had committed to teach for was over and then informed the community members that he planned to leave town. They tried to convince him to remain with them, but to no avail. Reb Yisroel changed his clothes, donning a short, village-style coat and wide belt. Then he went to the beis din of Brodt. Rav Gershon noticed what he thought was a poor man at the doorway, and he took out a coin to give him, but Reb Yisroel asked to speak with him in private, where he showed him his copy of the tenaim. Rav Gershon was shaken. He contacted his sister who still maintained that if this was their father’s will, she was ready to go ahead with the shidduch, and a chasunah date was set. Before the chuppah, Reb Yisroel asked to speak with his kallah. He revealed to her that he was posing as a simpleton and asked her not to reveal the truth to anyone.

Many were drawn to this distinctly holy man with a rare connection to Hashem and His Torah.
OBSCURED FROM THE PUBLIC EYE After the wedding, Rav Gershon attempted to learn with his new brother-in-law, but Reb Yisroel appeared not to comprehend a thing. Rav Gershon told his sister that she had every right to ask for a divorce. “If you don’t want to, I will buy you a horse and you can travel with him to the place of his choice.” To have his am ha’aretz brother-in-law live near him was causing him too much shame. The young couple set up their home near the Carpathian Mountains. Reb Yisroel spent his days in seclusion among the mountains. He fasted all day, and when he was ready to eat, he dug a little hole in the ground where he would place some flour and water to be baked from the heat of the sun. Two or three times a week, his wife would come to him with their horse and wagon, and he would dig earthen clay which she would then take to the city to sell so she could sustain herself with the profits. His days were spent in mindful solitude. The native bandits who ran wild in the area noticed the special personage in their midst. They witnessed miracles that Reb Yisroel experienced as he walked about immersed in thought, oblivious to his surroundings, and regarded him with awe. After seven years of solitude, Reb Yisroel and his wife returned to Brodt. When Rav Gershon Kitover saw his sister once again, he asked her where they had been. “We traveled from city to city and had many tzaros,” she responded, playing along with her husband’s concealment. Rav Gershon felt sorry for her and helped them settle near his home, using the Baal Shem Tov as a servant. Soon, Rav Gershon felt

his brother-in-law was not capable of even basic tasks, and he sent them to live in a village not far away. Here, Reb Yisroel achieved much greatness. He built a secluded hut in the forest where he davened and learned all day and night, returning to his home only on Shabbos.
GLORY REVEALED At home, his wife took care of the finances. Often, guests would turn up and she would send for her husband, who would come from the forest and behave as a simple person would, tending to the guests’ menial needs. One Tuesday, after being served a meal by Reb Yisroel, a visitor — a talmid of Rav Gershon Kitover, who was on his way to his rav — asked his host to prepare his horse. Reb Yisroel hurried to oblige. He turned to his guest while he was getting ready to leave and asked, “What would happen if you were to be here for Shabbos?” The guest chuckled and parted. Soon, one of his wagon wheels broke, and he retraced his path to his host. He was on his way once again when the wagon itself broke, and he was thus forced to return a second time. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday passed in a similar manner, with various deterrents coming up, until the visitor realized he had no choice but to remain with Reb Yisroel in the village for Shabbos. The guest could hardly entertain the thought of spending Shabbos with this poor villager. Though he noticed his hostess baking yud-beis challos according to the lofty minhag and was surprised to discover that his host had a mikvah for him to immerse in, he was still disturbed. Soon, Shabbos came and Reb Yisroel was still not around; he was davening Mincha and Kabbalas Shabbos in his solitary hut in the forest. When he came home, he greeted his guest with a warm gut Shabbos and positioned himself in front of the wall as if he were davening. Reb Yisroel honored his guest

with Kiddush, for he knew that if he made his usual fervent Kiddush, his piety would be discovered. His wife sat near him at head of the table, in the way of simple villagers. While the Shabbos meal was served, Reb Yisroel asked his guest to share some divrei Torah. It was Parshas Shemos and he simply repeated the story of Galus Mitzrayim, as if he were talking to a true simpleton. After the seudah, Reb Yisroel prepared a bed for his guest near the table. In the middle of the night, the guest awoke and was startled to see large flames coming out of the oven. Running over to investigate, he saw an otherworldly light. In great fright, he fell backward and fainted. The Baal Shem Tov revived him and told him, “You should not have looked at something you were not given permission for.” This truly baffled Reb Gershon’s talmid. On Shabbos morning, Reb Yisroel returned from his hut and made Kiddush with his customary devotion. This time when he asked his guest to repeat divrei Torah, the guest, truly puzzled as to who his host really was, explicated a Chazal with a peshat. The Baal Shem Tov responded with an additional peshat. After davening Mincha in the forest hut, the Baal Shem Tov arrived home for shalosh seudos and began to expound upon Torah secrets, pearls previously unheard.
On Motzei Shabbos, Reb Yisroel made Havdalah, and before parting, bade his guest not to repeat what he had seen to his teacher, Rav Gershon. Instead, he should go to the great talmidei chachamim of the city and tell them, “There is a great light in the vicinity of your kehillah. It is appropriate for you to approach him and bring him to your city.” When the people of Brodt heard these words, they realized the visitor must be referring to the Baal Shem Tov. All along, there had been subtle questions and interesting mannerisms that they had observed, and now it all began to make sense. The Yidden soon made their way toward the village. The Baal Shem Tov, seeing them approach, left his home and set out to meet them in the forest. The crowd prepared a seat of twigs and leaves from the forest trees and sat Reb Yisroel upon it. The Baal Shem Tov repeated divrei Torah, and the Yidden accepted him as their rav. Thus was the start of the exposure of this holy tzaddik. The Baal Shem Tov was then 36 years old. Through various twists of fate and revealing episodes, the Baal Shem Tov’s greatness continued to be recognized. Many were drawn to this distinctly holy man with a rare connection to Hashem and His Torah. They became staunch talmidim
and chassidim, following him in his unique approach, and later, perpetuating his legacy. As the years wore on, Reb Yisroel continued to apply his exceptional capacity to serving his Creator. He focused all his fervor, piety and devotion to spiritual growth, branding chassidus as a way of drawing near to Hashem.

SUNSET HUES On the first night of Shavuos 5520, the Baal Shem Tov remained awake along with his followers and repeated divrei Torah on the Tikkun Leil Shavuos. Early in the morning, he told them that he was about to pass away. He instructed Reb Leib Kessler and another chassid from the Chevrah Kadisha to handle his kevurah. He demonstrated on his own body simanim so they would know when the time of yetzias neshamah had come. He asked for a minyan to come daven with him and stated, “I want to speak a bit more with Hashem.” When his talmid Reb Nachman Horedenker went to shul to daven and say Tehillim on his behalf, the Baal Shem Tov commented, “It is for naught. If I were able to enter in the doorway that I am accustomed to [in the upper spheres], he would be able to accomplish…” The people of the city came to wish him a gut yom tov, and the Baal Shem Tov responded with divrei Torah. During the yom tov seudah, the Baal Shem Tov asked for a large jar of honey, and his assistant brought a small one. “On my yom hamaves I have no control,” he said. “Even my meshares cannot follow my wishes.” “Until now,” the Baal Shem Tov said to the assembled, “I have done chesed with you. Now I ask that you do chesed with me.” He stood up, but first commented that both his clocks would surely stop during his petirah. As he went to wash his hands, his chassidim saw that one clock had stopped moving! They tried to turn the Baal Shem Tov away so he wouldn’t notice, but the Baal Shem Tov called out, “I know the clock has stopped. I’m not worried about myself. I know I will go out of this doorway, straight through the next doorway [of Gan Eden].” He returned to his bed and a minyan began to recite Vehi Noam. The Baal Shem Tov repeated divrei Torah. Then he lay down and sat up, lay down and sat up again, a couple of times. Finally, he asked to be covered with a sheet. His entire body shook, the way it did when he would daven Shemoneh Esrei. When he lay still for the last time, the chassidim noticed that the small clock had stopped moving as well. The holy Baal Shem Tov passed away on Shavuos, at the age of 61, bequeathing his legacy to myriads of disciples and chassidim who have striven throughout the ages to water the roots of Torah and chassidus into a colorful, flowering garden of avodas Hashem.
When he lay still for the last time, the chassidim noticed that the small clock had stopped moving as well.
These anecdotes are brought down in the Shivchei HaBesh”t.

GOOD ENOUGH IS GOOD ENOUGH מגילת רותTEACHES US TO BELIEVE IN OURSELVES By: Shiffy Friedman ONCE WE’VE FINALLY reached the finish line with luscious cheesecakes in the refrigerator and beautiful blossoms adorning our homes, the question that begs to be asked is, “What is the essence of Shavuos?” Yes, fulfilling our duties in keeping up the customs of the day is important, but what deeper message does this glorious yom tov offer, one that lingers long after the last crumbs have been wiped off the pastry trays? A quick glimpse into Megillas Rus offers

us noteworthy food for thought that encapsulates the essence of this exalted day, a takeaway message that will leave us feeling inspired for a long, long time. From the heroine of Shavuos, Rus, we learn about our inner emotional world and how desperately we Jewish women want to be good. Too often, we feel that we’re not good enough — not a good enough wife, not a good enough mother, not a good enough Yid. Only one source of encouragement, though, can help extricate us from this alltoo-familiar place: the Torah. Several times throughout the megillah, Rus was asked the odd question, “Lemi hana’arah hazos?” Whose is this young woman? Who is she? Where does she come from? Strangely enough, the question was asked by people who were closely familiar to her. Boaz was the first person to make this inquiry in Megillas Rus. Despite being aware of her background, Boaz asked his servant, “Who is this young woman?” The entire city had gone out to greet Rus and Naomi. Didn’t Boaz already know the answer? Later, when Rus entered Boaz’s tent, he asked once again, “Who are you, my daughter?” This was the woman to whom he’d spoken that very afternoon, the one for whom he offered bales of wheat at no charge. And, strangest of all, when Rus returned to her motherin-law’s tent the next morning, the question Naomi asked was, “Who are you, my daughter?” In Meshivas Nafesh, his commentary on Megillas Rus, Rav Yoel Sirkus, zt”l, offers an insightful explanation on these seemingly strange questions, which contain deeper layers of meaning. Often, he writes, a woman stands at the mirror and asks herself, “Lemi hana’arah hazos?” Who is this woman staring back at me? What am I meant to be doing in this world? Am I a good wife? A good mother? If I were a good person, wouldn’t only good things happen to me? Why is my life going the way it’s going? Maybe I’m not worthy of experiencing joy in this world?” These thoughts come to us, the Meshivas Nafesh says, when we don’t feel good about ourselves, especially so when we’re faced with a challenge. When Naomi returned to her homeland after having spent a few years in Moav, the gossip mongers asked, “Is this Naomi? Did you see how she looks?” And what was her reaction to their comments? “Don’t call me Naomi (pleasantness),” she responded. “Call me Mara, for Hashem has dealt bitterly with me.” If I were truly the pleasant Naomi, her words implied, I would have had a pleasant life, but since my life is so bitter, it must mean I’m not a good person, after all. It’s no news that we women tend to be hard on ourselves. How often does it happen that we berate ourselves for life’s circumstances, that we attribute our challenges to our not being good enough? Like Naomi, we start to wonder about our identity. We stand before our reflection and wonder who we are indeed. This very same question was posed to Rus, the Moabite princess

who ended up being the forebearer of Moshiach. She, too, was asked about her identity. Both Boaz and Naomi questioned her sincerity, wondering aloud if this young woman who’d seen it all was actually ready to forsake her past for a restricted way of life. Was she truly ready for this? Was she a good person after all? And Rus, in her sincere piety, answered simply, “I am Rus, your friend. In all honesty, I, myself, don’t know who I am. I don’t know how righteous I am. If I would be a true tzadekes, I should have been married by now, I should have had parnassah and good health. Perhaps you can tell me who I really am?” Despite her desire to be good, Rus, too, struggled with feeling positively about herself. At that moment, Boaz said to her, “You are not amisecha, a servant, but from the Imahos. Royalty will still descend from you because you know what it means to be a woman of valor.” Indeed, several generations later, this couple’s descendant, Shlomo Hamelech, composed his poetic dedication to the woman of valor based on these beautiful words that his greatgrandfather had said to his great-grandmother in a watershed moment — a moment in which Rus absorbed a message that each of us Jewish women must live by in order to truly thrive. Stop seeing yourself as a servant, Boaz chided Rus. Stop seeing yourself as no good, as not good enough. If you want to be the mother of Moshiach, a part of the exalted nation, start telling yourself that you’re a woman of valor. If a woman believes that she’s unworthy to stand before Har Sinai and accept the holy Torah from Hashem, there’s no better time than now to realize that the words of Eishes Chayil were written for her. Indeed, the Ben Ish Chai writes that the word “mi” in “Eishes chayil mi yimtzah” has the numerical value of 50, which corresponds to the 50th day of sefirah: Shavuos. On this yom tov, dear sisters, Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants us to come closer to the mountain, to allow the words of Torah to seep into our beings, to see ourselves as the women of valor who we truly are. On Shavuos, we find this identity within. We Jewish women are inherently good, beautiful inside and out. And if we don’t believe it ourselves, a beautiful midrash on Matan Torah establishes this fact for us: “Yavo tov veyakabeil tov mitov latovim,” the Midrash says. Let the good one — Moshe Rabbeinu — come and accept the good — the Torah — from the Good One — Hakadosh Baruch Hu — for the good ones — us, Bnei Yisroel. Hashem asks us, “Do you think I would give away my prized possession to a nation that is anything other than good?” On Shavuos, when we get a chance to ponder the heights Rus reached once she believed in her greatness, we have the opportunity, too, to absorb the essence of the day, to realize that by virtue of being a member of the Am Segulah — and that Hashem chose each of us as recipients of His sacred gift — we possess a unique greatness as well. No matter how imperfect the cheesecakes turns out or the amount of times we lose it with the children during these hectic days, Hashem wants us to remember that we’re good enough — good enough as wives, mothers and human beings. Good enough to qualify as a member of his Chosen Nation. With this euphoric feeling in our hearts, may we be blessed with a truly joyous Kabbalas HaTorah!

Notable Gardens of the World Compiled and Photographed By: Sarah Einhorn
Now that spring is finally upon us, I can’t help but take in all the magnificent flowers and blossoming trees. With Shavuos, a yom tov centered on flowers, just around the corner, I like to revisit the unique gardens I’ve been to during my travels. Here are three gardens I visited and photographed, each special in its own right.

Green Animals Topiary Garden It is hard to believe that all the sculpted bushes in the Topiary Gardens are made of real greenery. The sculptures are so authentic that you can’t help but wonder if they’re made of plastic! However, the gardeners on site pruning and weeding the gardens assure you that the sculptures are very real. Green Animals Topiary Garden is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. A selfsufficient estate in Newport, Rhode Island, it features formal topiaries, vegetable and herb gardens, orchards,

and a Victorian house overlooking Narragansett Bay. Alice Brayton made the estate her permanent residence in 1939. When she died in 1972, it was left to the Preservation Society of Newport County, the organization that owns the famous Newport Mansions. However, the focus here is not on the house, but on the extraordinary garden that features 80 pieces of topiary, sculpted into the forms of animals, birds, geometric figures and ornamental designs. The sculptures are made of California privet, yew and English boxwood.

Keukenhof Timing is everything when it comes to visiting the world’s largest bulb garden. Keukenhof is only open for two months a year, from the end of March until the end of May, and is a one-of-a-kind garden that is worth a trip from anywhere. Touring Keukenhof Gardens takes about five hours. Each year, during tulip season, nearly a million people from around the world flock to Keukenhof to see the most amazing bulb garden in the world. Within the park there are acres upon acres of formal flower gardens, a man-made lake and meandering streams. The park is awash with the sights and scents of blossoming flowers, and charming little paths and bridges add a special touch to the beautiful flower displays. There are more than 7 million spring bulbs with 800 different varieties of tulips spread over the 79 acres, and in addition to the tulips, there are many other bulbs planted, such as the narcissus, hyacinth, crocus and anemone. There are also four indoor pavilions on the grounds of Keukenhof. Named for members of the Dutch Royal Family, each pavilion is dedicated to special types of seasonal flower displays. Throughout the park’s eight-week showing, the indoor exhibitions change weekly. Top bulb growers from across the Netherlands display their flowers in a competition, and prizes are awarded for a wide range of categories, including presentation and flower quality. The thirty horticulturalists employed at the park are constantly weeding, trimming and maintaining the gardens. They begin planting in October and work to maintain the gardens until the season is over.

Boston Public Garden The Boston Public Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, is a formal garden located across the street from Boston Common, the city’s public park. The garden is beautifully kept by caring citizens through the Friends of the Public Garden Association. Dating back to 1838, the garden was the first public botanical garden in America. The garden is masterfully designed with trees planted from countries all over the world. The trees have name tags and relevant information hanging from them. The Duckling Sculpture at the corner of Beacon and Charles is extremely popular. The statue is based on Robert McCloskey’s 1941 bestseller Make Way for Ducklings, the bronze figures represent Mrs. Mallard and her eight ducklings. From early April to late September, Swan Boats are open for visitors to enjoy in the lake. These boats were first designed in 1877 and have been gliding along the lagoon ever since. The boat moves along at 2 mph, circles the island and goes under the bridge. We visited the garden on a warm fall day. The flowers in the garden were not in bloom anymore, but the trees and the design were noticeably beautiful. Entrance to the garden is free and is definitely worth a stop when visiting Boston. Sarah Einhorn’s website, beentheredonethattrips.com, features trip recommendations to suit all ages and stages. The attractions are listed by trip type or by location. She has visited all attractions personally before writing about them.

AFTER A FULL YEAR OF WORK, the renovations on my neighbor Raizy’s house were nearing completion and the moving day was set. With the end finally in sight, Raizy was gearing up for the daunting task ahead of her. She was prepared and even excited to spend the first few weeks unpacking and getting the house back in order. She knew exactly which rooms she needed to do and in which order she would do them. Being that there were just a few weeks until Pesach, she would start with the Pesach kitchen, move on to the regular kitchen, then the bedrooms and finally the dining room, which they wouldn’t be using until yom tov. One space Raizy was relieved not to have to include on her list was the basement playroom. The basement had been left untouched during construction, and all she had to do was clear the room from some boxes they had stored there, and it would be good to go. Or so she thought. One morning, Raizy went down to the playroom to put something away, and upon opening the closet door, encountered a nasty surprise. The workers, presumably needing access to the walls behind the toy closet, had emptied all of its contents and then simply stuffed everything back inside. Panicking, she quickly called me,
160 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 16, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
because although she knew she didn’t have the time to add another major job to her carefully scheduled plan, she also knew she wanted the playroom done right. The toy closet has the distinction of being the most difficult to maintain. This is, for the most part, due to the fact that most of its users are below the age of ten and generally not that inclined toward cleanliness. If the closet is organized in a simple, kid-friendly way, the likelihood of its staying neat will be exponentially higher. This means each set of toys should have its own clearly labeled container. For households with very young children, I like to label the containers with a picture of the toy for those who cannot yet read. Grouping similar sets together, which can seem like a good idea when you want to save on containers, just confuses the kids and will make it harder to clean up. The only category I suggest using one big box for is baby toys, simply because it is most efficient since it is generally the mother who takes those out. When buying containers, it is very tempting to save money and keep toys in the boxes they came in or use spare containers you already own. I find that, in addition to them not looking as nice, this takes up much more space, as you cannot easily stack assorted boxes
the way you can containers that are from the same set. The containers I like to use for toys are the same ones I recommended for the utility closet — clear containers with a latch on either end. These are the best choice in any closet where you will have stacks of containers, as you can open the lid to put something away without having to mess up the whole pile. I do not recommend using baskets or containers without covers. In addition to not being stackable, these tend to invite clutter as most kids would rather just drop their things into a basket than look for the correct container. The only exception I make is for one (very small) basket on the edge of a shelf. This basket is for small game pieces that are found around the house when you do not have the extra minute to figure out to which game they belong. Once a week you can empty this basket into the appropriate containers. Board games and puzzles are the only toys that I like to keep in their own boxes. Instead of storing them in horizontal stacks, a brilliant idea I learned from my home management teacher in high school is to stand them up vertically, as you would a book. This enables the kids to choose a game without worries of the entire stack of games tumbling down along with it. Another option for board games is to store all the boards on a pot lid rack, and then keep the corresponding game pieces in small containers alongside it. The same idea works well for wooden toddler puzzles. As you’re putting the containers into the closet, have in mind which toys each of your children plays with the most. Keep these toys on the most accessible shelf for each child’s height. Any toy that you do not want the children to play with unsupervised should be stored on the top shelf, which ensures they will have to ask to have it taken down for them. If the closet is tall, and you have no choice but to keep toys higher than arm’s reach, you
can keep a foldable step stool at the bottom of the closet. This will help the kids get to the toys on higher shelves without having to climb up and risk injury. Large toys, such as doll carriages and large trucks, can be stored on the floor or any shelf that is roomy enough. It is preferable for these items not to be kept at eye level as, unfortunately, this will not be your best-looking shelf. When I speak to my clients to hear feedback months after we finish organizing, the one thing they all have in common is the shock that their toy closets stayed so neat. They all make the same mistake in assuming that because it is the kids’ domain there is no hope. Yes, kids are less likely to care whether or not the house looks good, and therefore will not put in much effort into cleaning. Cooperative Chinuch
I
In the words of Shlomo Hamelech, “Ein chadash tachas hashemesh — There is nothing new under the sun.” Indeed, many tips and ideas that were discussed until now are not necessarily new. Rather, the reason we discuss and present these ideas is to create an awareness, which will help us remain alert in different situations we have with our children. When we live with the proper awareness of chinuch, we can make sure to monitor whether things are getting better or worse and whether we are fulfilling our responsibility as the parents of our children. We cannot simply rely on the cheder or school systems to raise our children, even though our children spend so much of their time in a school setting. We need to develop a deep connection with our children, so that they will feel safe to share whatever is happening with them. When it comes to disciplining our children, there can sometimes be serious conflicts when parents disagree with the disciplinary actions that educators take against their child. In fact, many students sometimes complain about how terrible their rebbi or teacher is, and this often leads to misunderstandings and hostility. While we may wish to rush to protect our dear child, as parents, we cannot judge a situation based on our children’s upsetting statements. Of course, this discussion relates to reasonable and normal actions of educators. Rather than attacking the rebbi or teacher, we should simply sit with the child and listen carefully, without taking any sides or judging either the child or the educator.

When we listen without judgment, we help our children understand themselves, respect themselves and others, and build solid self-esteem. Once the child feels heard, we can try to present another perspective, suggesting what may have upset the rebbi or teacher. After such a discussion with a child, it is a good idea to share the exchange with the teacher and ask for his or her take on the situation. If there is an issue that must be resolved, the teacher will feel that it is being addressed. Teachers always appreciate responsible and caring parents who take an interest in what is happening with their child and make an effort to stay informed. However, parents must also be careful not to take this hands-on approach too far, since meddling and controlling parents who present their concerns as orders to their children’s teachers of-
The Maharal of Prague teaches us that we need to be b’shalom with ourselves, b’shalom with others and b’shalom with Hashem. Of course, it would be much easier simply to “install” all the required programs in our children so that they will know what they must do and will not disturb our plans. But that is not what Hashem wants; He wants us to be like Him and listen to the cries of our children, care for our children’s feelings, and develop the awareness to know how our children feel at all times. By emulating His ways — and fulfilling the words “mah Hu rachum af ata rachum…” — we become closer to Hashem. Another area of discipline that requires great awareness is understanding how to walk the fine line between helping our children have a sweet association with Torah and mitzvos while still giving them the guidance and correction they often need. It is normal for children to misbehave. In fact, children crave structure, and often, by misbehaving, they are actually asking us to give them structure and boundaries. Nonetheless, we don’t want to give guidance and boundaries in a way that will come across as harsh and demanding. I once heard from a chashuve menahel that there are 14 types of punishments, with the 14th being the worst of them all. He explained that the rebbi must make a cheshbon to figure out what type of punishment a child should receive. This decision should be based on what the child has done, what consequence he can handle, and what will make an impact on the child and help him become a better person. I never heard from the menahel what all the types of punishments are, but I believe the most important part of his explanation is to remember to punish in a way that will make an impact and help the child become a better person. Punishments that don’t accomplish bring no results and only leave a negative impact on
Hashem views each of us as a ben yachid, and so too, when dealing with children, must we view each child as our ben yachid. ten create a negative atmosphere and thereby turn the teachers against them and their children. AFTER THE BRIS of her child, a mother once asked an experienced mohel for instructions on how to care for the baby. “If you’re worried that your child needs Tylenol,” the mohel said, “perhaps it’s you who needs two tablets!” It is important to know that some issues can be ignored or require only a mild response. Sometimes it is our anxiety and emotions that cause us to blow things out of proportion, aggravating situations and creating issues where there were none.
the child. A rosh yeshivah once told me that when he was a young boy, his class once decided to skip secular studies. The principal was very angry, because that could have resulted in the school losing financial aid. He ordered all of the students to go, one by one, into the office of the Bobover Rebbe, zt”l. “When I went into the room,” the rosh yeshivah said, “the Rebbe looked at me and said, ‘You understand that you did not do the right thing. It was really reckless behavior. The existence of our yeshivah depends on your success in secular studies. Such are the rules, and you must obey them. For breaking the rules, you deserve a punishment. Come to me, and I will give you a potch.’” The rosh yeshivah related how he approached the Rebbe on shaky legs, scared of what was to come. However, when he stood in front of the Rebbe, the Rebbe gently put his palm on the boy’s cheek. “That is your potch,” the Rebbe said. “I hope that you have learned your lesson.” “That was the most powerful potch I ever received,” the rosh yeshivah said. “It was full of ahavah. I will never forget it.” The word ahavah — love — is gematria 13, just like the word echad — one. We must punish with true ahavah, and with the perspective that every child is our only child. According to the Baal Shem Hakadosh, Hashem views each of us as a ben yachid, and so too, when dealing with children, must we view each child as our ben yachid. When punishment is delivered in this manner, with true love and with an appreciation for each child, it will be accepted positively and will make an impact on the child. Moreover, a child who is fortunate to be disciplined in this manner will always remember that Hashem loves him, even when he makes mistakes, and this will inspire him to serve Hashem with a full heart. What is Earth’s largest desert? The Antarctic Desert. Wait, what? Surprisingly, a desert is not characterized by cacti, sand and sun. Rather, a desert is an area that receives only a scant few inches of rain (or snowfall) a year, and then goes on to lose more than that amount of water through evaporation. This means that large areas of ice and very little snowfall, such as the entire continent of Antarctica, are in fact deserts. Cold, or polar, deserts, but deserts nonetheless.
The Antarctic Polar Desert at the South Pole, at about 5.5 million square miles, is the world’s largest desert — as well as the only desert that covers an entire continent — followed by the Arctic Polar Desert at the North Pole. Next on the list is the subtropical Sahara Desert, which covers 3.5 million square miles.
The Carcross Desert in Canada is sometimes considered the world’s smallest desert, measuring in at about one square mile. However, it is technically a series of sand dunes and not a desert, because its climate is too humid for it to be a true desert.
The Atacama Desert, located in Chile, South America, is the world’s driest desert and the only true desert that receives less precipitation than the two polar deserts. The Atacama’s rainfall averages at about 0.6 inches a year, though some years there is no rain at all.
Sahara, in Arabic, means desert. So Sahara Desert translates to… Desert Desert. The Sahara, in addition to being the largest hot desert, is also the hottest desert worldwide, and only Death Valley, California, has records of similar temperatures. The air temperature in Sahara during the hottest month averages at more than 104 degrees, though it gets considerably hotter in many areas. Even more severe are its surface sand temperatures, which can easily reach over 170 degrees!
The Aralkum Desert is the world’s youngest desert and only appeared from the 1960s and on. Not that you should expect new deserts to appear out of the blue (quite literally, in fact), but apparently, it would be wise to irrigate responsibly! When the Soviets built huge irrigation systems in the area between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, it depleted the water supply of the Aral Sea nearby, and soon, what was once a seabed turned into a… desert!

SURVIVAL IN THE DESERT
Hashem created every being with the ability to survive in its habitat. Here is just a sampling of the miracles of the desert:
The cape ground squirrel has a portable source of shade: its tail. When the sun gets too hot, it simply lift its tails, and voila! It’s in the shade.
The fennec fox of North Africa has very large ears with loads of blood vessels, which allows the animal to easily rid itself of excess heat, as well as hair on the soles of its feet to protect it from the intense heat of the sand. Then, to help it combat the cold desert nights, the fennec fox is covered in a thick layer of fur that keeps it nice and warm until morning.
Sandgrouse, desert birds found in Asia and North Africa, have feathers that act like sponges, which help them carry water to their young.
The meerkat, another African wonder, has black circles around its eyes to absorb the sunlight, which allows them to be somewhat less blinded by the sun.
And, no, we won’t forget about camels, which are incredible desert animals. In addition to their humps that store excess fat, camels also have wide feet to help them stay steady in the shifting sand, as well as hair in their ears, two rows of eyelashes (and three eyelids) and closable nostrils that help keep the sand out.

Today’s my birthday! I wonder what they are preparing for me at home.
Mazel tov!
Avraham, open the door. I think your friends are here.
Come see what we prepared for you!
What?? Really?? We must get to work. I’m coming right away!
Oh, it’s an urgent call from the office.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.
It’s so late, and Abba isn’t back yet.
Seems serious.
Must be something urgent regarding the missionaries.
Maybe we should say Tehillim.
It’s a big zechus to have a father who’s involved in hatzalas nefashos.
Recap: Tom gets reprimanded by the higher ups at Matok Li after he loses it at his desk. He begs for another chance and then desperately reaches out to Gavriel to do all he can to sabotage Sapir.
