IN APPRECIATION OF HASHEM’S CREATION (Re: Beauty in Your Backyard, Issue 147) I am usually not a fan of informational articles. I start reading them and then conk out midway because they do not keep my interest. The other day, however, I was shocked to discover that I not only got through a complete article, but was actually disappointed that it finished! Beauty in Your Backyard (Issue 147) was an informative, witty and beautifully written masterpiece. When I saw that the author wrote a second piece in the following issue, this time about birds, I read it immediately and it did not disappoint. Just like the other, it was liberally peppered with humor and the language rich and vivid — I loved it! It was apparent throughout the article that she adores Hashem’s creations and that she really knows her stuff. Blimie is an absolute breath of fresh air, and I hope you keep her articles coming! A Monsey Reader

INSPIRING SERIES (Re: Chizuk on Chinuch Series) I really enjoy The Monsey View each week, but the recent articles by Rabbi Steiman really touched my heart. His wise words and knowledge have a great impact on my parenting. I’m looking forward to reading more of his articles. Y.K.

RE: RAISING THE BAR (Inbox, Issue 148) Very valid points were brought up by all of the letter writers who wrote in regarding the beautiful linen closet displayed in your pages. There is truth in each of their letters. Yes, closet doors are created for a reason, and I am quite thankful for them because, no, my closets do not look like the one you featured! But I wish they did! Once I have more room to live in, perhaps they will. For now, though, everything is squished in to just barely fit. It doesn’t make me happy to see it. M&S SHOE REPAIR

I definitely aspire to have beautiful closets, not for the “gass,” but for my own family and my own happiness. When all parts of the house are clean and pleasant to look at, it brings a certain measure of peace to the home and creates expansiveness of the mind. I see absolutely nothing wrong with beautifying the inside of my home, especially if it comes only at the cost of a few sashes of ribbon and learning to properly fold… Aspiring

After reading the linen closet feature and seeing that some readers took this as a pressure, I’d like to note a few things: First, the ideas are amazing for kallahs preparing their apartments. (I don’t look at that as luxury.) Second, for those long past that stage, this is a great, enjoyable activity for your teenagers. Let them feel at home decorating the closets! There isn’t a more kosher outlet for their creativity than this. The supplies are very minimal and do not have to be pricey. Last, if you take your neighbor’s fancy closets as social pressure, then think about it: There are more families without such closets than families with such closets. And don’t forget that social pressure will always be there; be happy it’s inside the closets instead of a new showy trend on the street! A Reader

WHAT ABOUT THE CAPES? (Re: Out of the Closet, Issue 145) I’m following Chaya Dym’s organization column closely, and I just love it. It’s chock-full of solid, practical tips, and her suggestions are great and make so much sense! I was wondering if she can tell me where in my coat closet to store shawls and capes. Does she suggest they get hung on hangers, folded, or is there some nifty specialized hanger out there? E.L. CHAYA DYM RESPONDS: Thank you for your kind words! I’m so happy you asked, because those are items that many people have. There are a couple of ways that I like to store them, depending on how many you own. If you have just one or two, I would suggest folding and then hanging each one on the crossbar of one of your regular coat hangers. However, if you have quite a few, they do sell scarf hangers that have multiple horizontal bars. You can then use one hanger for multiple shawls and capes. We welcome your feedback, comments and suggestions. Please email comments@themonseyview.com.

Dear Basya, I was wondering why you limit foods like olive oil, avocado, nuts, fruits and certain proteins. Aren’t these foods healthy? On my old diet I was allowed to eat as much of these foods as I wanted, and I still managed to lose weight. Do you really think that having an extra few tablespoons of olive oil, a few ounces of extra salmon, or a few extra nuts will keep me from losing weight? Signed, A Healthy Eater

Dear Healthy Eater, CHAPTER 7

I appreciate your question as it goes straight to the heart of what makes Nutrition by Tanya unique. On our plan, almost no food is completely banned! We don’t have good

because even the healthiest foods will cause us to gain weight if we eat too much of it. So to answer your question, yes, within the context of a balanced meal plan that encourages all food groups — carbs, proteins, fats, fruits, vegetables and the occasional treat — even a small handful of extra nuts can keep you from losing weight. By: Malka Schneps

MRS. KALISH WANTED TO TEACH her fourth grade class a powerful lesson that they would carry for life. Thinking that the best way to learn is through direct experience, Mrs. Kalish handed out an apple to each girl in her class. “Now, girls, beginning with the first row, I want each girl to make a bracha on her apple, while the rest of us answer amen.” One by one, the eighteen girls recited “borei pri ha’eitz.” After the last girl said her bracha, Mrs. Kalish asked the girls how many mitzvos had just been performed. “One,” replied a girl in the second row. “We all said the bracha on an apple.” The rest of the class nodded in agreement. “Well, let me ask you a question,” said Mrs. Kalish. “Would anyone be willing to share what you were thinking as you made the bracha?” The girls squirmed in their seats, unsure of what Mrs. Kalish had in mind. “I’m not looking to judge anybody. Only share if you’re willing,” she encouraged. Finally, a few girls were willing to share. One girl said she was thinking that her mother told her she should always have kavanah when she made a bracha, so she was trying to have kavanah. Another girl said she was thinking how amazing it is that Hashem made apples in so many colors and flavors. A third girl said she was thinking how nice it was that Hashem made so many different types of fruits and vegetables, so that everyone could find something they liked. “Let me ask you a question, girls,” continued Mrs. Kalish. “Do you think the brachos of these three girls were identical?” “No,” they replied. “Well, all of you girls had different thoughts and intentions when you made your brachos, so there wasn’t just one mitzvah being performed when you girls made your brachos — there were eighteen mitzvos.” Parshas Naso describes the opening of the Mishkan on Rosh Chodesh Nissan 2449. The nasi of each shevet brought the very first korbanos to the newly erected Mishkan, one nasi per day. The Torah describes in full the korbanos brought by each of the nesiyim. First

came Nachshon ben Aminadav from Shevet Yehudah: “V’korbano ka’aras kesef achas shloshim umei’ah mishkalah… — And his offering was one silver bowl weighing 130 shekels…” The Torah uses 53 words to describe the full list of every korban that Nachshon ben Aminadav brought to the Mishkan. The Torah then lists the korbanos that Nesanel ben Tzur of Shevet Yissachar brought on the second day: “V’korbano ka’aras kesef achas shloshim umei’ah mishkalah… — And his offering was one silver bowl weighing 130 shekels…” The Torah uses the same 53 words to describe the full list of every korban that Nesanel ben Tzur brought to the Mishkan. Likewise, on each of the ten subsequent days, the remaining nesiyim brought the same exact list of korbanos, and the Torah uses the same exact 53 words to describe the korban of each nasi, for a total of twelve times. The perek that brings the list of korbanos twelve times occupies 89 pesukim, making Parshas Naso the longest parsha in the Torah with a total of 176 pesukim. We know that the Torah does not waste words. Why would the Torah write out the same list twelve times, rather than just say that each of the nesiyim brought this list on each of the first twelve days of the Mishkan? The Midrash (Bamidbar Rabbah 13:14) gives us an answer: Although it looks like the nesiyim all brought the same korbanos, each one had a different kavanah. The Midrash goes on to describe the individual kavanah of each nasi. Because each nasi had a unique kavanah when bringing his korbanos, his korbanos were not identical to the ones brought by the other nesiyim — even though each nasi brought exactly the same items. No two people are the same, and no two people think the same way. Two people can perform the same exact physical action, but in the world of ruchniyus, the differences become apparent. We should never feel that any mitzvah we perform is just a repetition of the same mitzvah performed by other people. Every mitzvah we perform is completely unique, and we never do the same mitzvah twice. We each bring something special to the world. May each of us remember this and be sure to treasure the precious and unique avodah of ourselves and of those around us.

National Seat Belt Enforcement Campaign Underway in Ramapo THE RAMAPO POLICE DEPARTMENT is participating in a nationwide seat belt campaign, vowing zero tolerance for anyone who fails to buckle up. The national Click it or Ticket campaign began on May 21 and will run through June 3 and, far from being an effort to raise funds by issuing fines, is aimed at reminding drivers, passengers and children to use their seat belts whenever they hit the road.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half the passengers who died in daytime car crashes in 2016 were not wearing seat belts, with that number rising to 56 percent for fatal collisions taking place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Proper seat belt usage saved the lives of an estimated 15,000 people who were involved in car crashes in 2016.

Voters Give Thumbs Down to Proposed East Ramapo Budget ONCE AGAIN, East Ramapo voters voted down the district’s proposed annual budget, which would have raised taxes by 2.89 percent, but would have also restored four days of busing to yeshivah parents. A total of 2,728 voted yes on the budget on May 15, with 3,342 opposing the plan. According to The Journal News, voters at the Avir Yaakov Girls’ School and Kakiat Elementary cast the largest amount of no votes, while the proposed budget received the most support at the Summit Park and Chestnut Ridge polling places. A heavy spring storm that brought extremely high winds and downed trees as well as power lines during the late afternoon hours was at least partially responsible

for this year’s relatively low voter turnout in the school board election. East Ramapo’s $237.3 million budget was the only one voted down in Rockland County. If a second budget vote that may be held on June 19 also fails, the district will be forced to adopt a contingency budget, which under state law, may not include any possible increases to the school tax rate. Voters returned incumbent Sabrina Charles-Pierre to her seat on the school board, with newcomers Yoel Trieger and Ephraim Weissmandl also winning seats on the board.

Severe Storms Create Havoc in Lower Hudson Valley A STATE OF EMERGENCY was declared in the Lower Hudson Valley last week after violent storms swept through the area, taking down power lines and killing two people when the cars they were traveling in were hit by falling trees. Skies darkened quickly and winds of up to 70 mph swept through the area on May 15, according to The Journal News, with two confirmed tornadoes touching down in Putnam County. By the time the relatively brief storm had ended, more than 78,000 people were without power, and numerous area roads were blocked by trees. Just hours later, Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in Putnam, Dutchess, Orange and Sullivan counties, bringing in 125 members of the National Guard to help with the post-storm recovery efforts.

62 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 24, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Locally, both the Town of Ramapo Highway Department and Orange and Rockland Utilities were busy in the aftermath of the storm. More than 200 crews and 450 utility workers were brought in to fix downed power lines, and road crews used chainsaws and loaders to clear roads and remove fallen tree limbs. Among the damage caused by the storm in the Monsey area was a downed tree that had Route 306 completely closed near Victoria Gardens and a power outage that had Wesley Kosher Supermarket darkened, leaving pre-yom tov shoppers scrambling to buy their groceries elsewhere. Upstate, over 23,000 people were without power for several days in Orange County, while Sullivan County saw more than 14,000 without electricity, creating problems for some who found their plans to spend Shavuos upstate scuttled by the outages.

Open-Faced Sandwiches BY: LEAH STERN Photos: C. Tarkieltaub

Open-faced sandwiches are very popular in England, where they are referred to as “bridge rolls and served at every bunch affair. Easy to eat and serve, and tempting for little diners, a variety of these make the perfect shalosh seudos fare. Shabbos Alert: Creating and consuming the floral creations on Shabbos may pose halachic issues. Please consult with your rav for the right way to go about it.

INGREDIENTS For the base you can use French bread, sandwich bread or rolls, and for a mezonos version, Snackers or crackers. However, the crackers do turn soggy, so they should not be prepared more than 1½ hours ahead of use. Choice of spreads and garnishes are endless. For this assortment, I used the following:

SPREADS • Golden Taste Nova Lox Spread

• Golden Taste White Fish Salad

• Golden Taste Egg Salad

• Golden Taste Tuna Deluxe

• Golden Taste Vegetarian Eggplant

• Cream cheese

• Colored peppers

• Olives

• Carrots

• Pea shoots

• Kirbies

• Snow peas

VEGETABLES

PREPARATION: 1. Slice French bread and rolls, and lay slices flat. 2. Use a round or square cookie cutter to cut shapes out of the whole-wheat and rye bread. (These should be prepared before Shabbos and stored in a tightly closed bag.) 3. Smear desired spreads on breads and rolls, and garnish with vegetables. 4. Place in a container or tray with a tight lid to prevent spreads from drying out, or wrap loosely in plastic until ready to serve. Vegetable flowers can be made either with small cookie cutters or with fondant cutters. You can also use a sharp knife to cut notches out of a narrow carrot, and then slice the carrot. Another option is to cut petals and different flowers out of peppers and carrots using a sharp, pointed knife.

SEASONED CHEF: Leftover bread frames can be served with spreads and veggies to feed the hungry little ones while you’re preparing. Alternatively, they can be used to make croutons or bread crumbs, or they can be placed in a frying pan with a bit of butter and a sunny side or scrambled egg can be in the hole.

During the long summer Shabbos afternoons, it is beautiful to observe how Yidden everywhere set aside time to recite Pirkei Avos. Parents can be found sitting side by side with their children, saying Pirkei Avos together. Men can be seen walking to the beis medrash to hear a Pirkei Avos shiur, or they can be found sitting and reciting the current week’s perek at home.

SHINING

student

The Nesivos Sholom explains that we learn Pirkei Avos during the summer because this is the time of year when we need it most. In fact, we begin after Pesach, during the time that we prepare for Kabbalas HaTorah. This period is when we traditionally focus on personal growth and on developing our middos, since good middos are essential for connecting to the Torah.

during the stay, he found Reb Elimelech sitting and calculating whether he would be worthy of Olam Haba. Reb Elimelech was talking to himself, saying, “My soul, my soul! You are simply not worthy of the Next World!” He listed all of his shortcomings and then tried to console himself, saying, “Why, even if it is true that you are not worthy of Olam Haba, nonethe-

Pirkei Avos is a collection of our greatest values. Without these values, we cannot become the Yidden we are meant to be. It is interesting to note that we begin Pirkei Avos by reciting the mishnah from Sanhedrin, which states that every Yid has a portion in Olam Haba. Why did Chazal put this mishnah here, as an introduction to discussing what middos tovos look like? The Pupa Rav shared the following story from Sifsei Tzaddikim*: The holy Apter Rav related that once, when Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhensk was staying with him, the Apter Rav gave him his own private room. When the Apter Rav came into the room at one point

less, the Holy One, in His great mercy and kindness, will grant you Olam Haba! After all, Chazal teach us that the Holy One fulfills the entire Torah Himself. Hashem does acts of kindness and charitable deeds. However, since the Next World is purely spiritual, what type of tzedakah can Hashem possibly give? The tzedakah He gives is that He grants Olam Haba even to those who are unworthy!” The Pupa Rav concludes, saying: “This is how Reb Elimelech consoled himself. What can we say?”

STERLING

achievement

While it is comforting to remember that Hashem does “charitable deeds” and gives all of us a portion in Olam Haba, it is still not clear why this must be stated at the beginning of Pirkei Avos. Perhaps the answer is that Chazal wanted to give us chizuk before we begin learning about how our middos are supposed to be. After all, we may become discouraged when we learn Pirkei Avos and realize how far we still need to go. However, we must know that we cannot give up, only always remember that, as Yidden, we must strive to exhibit proper behavior at all times. The words “Kol Yisroel yesh lahem chelek..." convey a powerful lesson. We must always remember that we are Yisroel, and as such, we must behave differently. If we always remember how we must behave, that awareness alone will allow us to be zoche to have a part in Olam Haba. Then, as we continue to learn what it means to be a Yid, our Olam Haba will expand. It is interesting to note that this section of Mishnayos is called Pirkei Avos — Chapters of Our Forefathers. Of course, the rest of Mishnayos and Gemara are also part of our mesorah — part of the teaching of our ancestors that can be traced all the way to Moshe Rabbeinu. If so, why is only this attributed to our Avos? Klal Yisroel exists only be-

cause of the mesorah of our Avos Hakdoshim, which we carry with us from generation to generation. By naming this section Pirkei Avos, Chazal teach us that these lessons of Pirkei Avos, of middos that a Yid must develop, is the most valuable part of the Torah from our Avos and is crucial for our continued existence. After all, Pirkei Avos is a collection of our greatest values. Without these values, we cannot become the Yidden we are meant to be. When we understand that Pirkei Avos is the guide that teaches us the values of a Yid, we can learn it with the proper perspective. Instead of simply viewing these perakim as nice teachings of Chazal, we should regard it with the necessary seriousness and understand that this must guide our life’s work. In the Kuntres Nesivei Chinuch it is written that in order for our children to have better middos, we need to talk to them about middos. For example, we must discuss how bad kaas, kinah and taavos are. Helping our children develop an awareness of the importance of good middos will alert them to be careful about their behavior and develop good middos as they grow up. Additionally, we must make it a focus in our lives to find the time to work on our middos in a practical way. Reb Elimelech M’Lizhensk writes that the words

“Adam l’amal yulad — A person was born to work” refers to the work we must do on our middos. Working on our middos is another powerful way for us to demonstrate to our children how important it is for a Yid to behave appropriately. One mitzvah in the Torah tells us to remember what Amalek did to Klal Yisroel when they were leav-

enough! We must also practically wipe away any of these “krirus” by constantly filling ourselves with the warmth of our values as a Yid. By learning the wisdom of Chazal, we fulfill the mitzvah of mechias Amalek, because the primary objective is to bring warmth and growth into our daily reality. When we constantly work on

However, we are also told to “wipe out the memory” of Amalek. What is the Torah teaching us with these contradicting commandments? The meforshim explain that the pasuk “Asher korcho baderech” (Devarim 25:18) means that Amalek brought “krirus” — coldness of emunah — to Klal Yisroel. Thus, the Torah is teaching us to remember this “krirus,” to remember to stay alert and recall what this coldness can do to us. However, this is not

When you have poor posture it is equivalent to a misaligned car.

Static posture is looking at the person in still position. i.e. Standing and sitting.

Our bones are strategically positioned to sit one on top of the other.

Dynamic posture is looking at how the body moves.

As we go about our day to day lives our body adapts to the situation we put it under.

There are hundreds of different movements you can assess. There are approximately 9 movements that I use to help highlight the bodies weak spots.

If you spend 8 hours of your day: hunched over a compute; slouching in your chair during meetings; hunched over the wheel in your car: You are going to adapt a hunched over posture. This opens you up to injury. Living the sedentary lifestyle we do, we don't notice the postural issues we may have.

The first Monsey eruv was built in 1964, when we first moved here. Constructed of simple wooden poles and string, it started out as very small, first encompassing only half of Phyllis Terrace to service the seven families who had moved to Monsey to the new Viznitz community. It was a year or two later that the Viznitz Rebbe, ztl, asked me if I can take it upon myself to be bodek the eruv each Erev Shabbos, and every so often, the Rebbe would accompany me for the weekly inspection. Slowly, the eruv was extended to include the entire Phyllis Terrace. We were the first family to move to lower Ashel Lane, and I extended the eruv to include that area, and a short

time later, when the Viznitz yeshivah settled on Ashel Lane, it was further expanded. There was a separate eruv built for the Edwin-Roman area, and we then merged the two. Next to be included in the eruv was the Dr. Frank area, when community members spread out there, and from that point on, it kept being extended. When the Bobover Rav, Reb Shlomo, zt”l, visited Monsey one Shabbos, the eruv was further expanded to include the Blauvelt area to accommodate the Bobover shul. Then Ger and Klausenburg extended the eruv so it should encompass their shuls on Saddle River Road and Main Street, respectively. When the eruv was expanded to also include the Bates area, we realized that it was becoming very difficult to upkeep such an old-fashioned eruv over such a large area. We then began to plan the new eruv, the one that is currently in place.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO BUILD THE CURRENT ERUV? When analyzing the areas we needed the eruv to cover, we realized that O&R poles posed a great solution for a functional eruv. We reached out to them, and after six years of many negotiations, complications and agreements, O&R finally agreed to lease the poles to us. With permit in hand, construction for a durable eruv to encompass all of Monsey finally began about 14 years ago. The eruv covered the abovementioned areas, as well as Wesley Hills, New Hempstead and small areas in Airmont and Chestnut Ridge. In re-

cent years, when the community started expanding and moving out to surrounding areas, the eruv went with them, and until today, it just keeps getting expanded. In fact, in the last five years, the eruv was extended three times in Airmont and Chestnut Ridge alone. Pomona Heights was added to the eruv map about a year ago, and then New City. Very recently, even Haverstraw joined the eruv district, as well as the Suffern hospital area. What we’re working on currently is Pearl River, to accommodate the frum presence there.

HOW MANY SQUARE MILES DOES THE ERUV ENCOMPASS? At this point, it extends over approximately 50 square miles.

ARE THERE ANY AREAS THAT PEOPLE THINK ARE WITHIN THE ERUV BUT ARE NOT? We mail out an eruv map so that people know exactly where there’s an eruv and under which section they are in, and we keep working on encompassing all necessary areas. The map and additional information are also available on our website, www.eruvmonsey.com. It’s important to know that it’s the responsibility of each resident who lives in outside areas to verify that their home is indeed included in the eruv. Nothing should be assumed.

nouncements. In addition to that, we have the contact information of the gabbaim of all community shuls, to ensure that any important notifications will reach all residents.

HAS IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED THAT THE ERUV WAS DOWN IN AN AREA? The Vaad H’eiruv invests hours of work and tremendous effort to ensure a functioning eruv each Shabbos. Fallen wires, downed trees and any damages to the eruv are dealt with immediately, sometimes until close to the zman to avoid a such a situation. However, this winter, right after Purim, New City was without an eruv for one Shabbos, when a major storm resulted in fallen wires and blocked-off streets that were not possible to be fixed in time for Shabbos. All residents were notified, and they did not carry that Shabbos.

WHAT IS THE ERUV’S ANNUAL BUDGET, AND HOW IS IT FUNDED? With Monsey’s growth and an ever-expanding eruv, the standard annual cost for running the eruv is close to

98 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 24, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

$200,000. It includes renting the poles; material, repair and maintenance costs; fuel for our trucks; and costly insurance for our workers and volunteers (which is mandatory by law). We have two repairmen on staff and two employees who oversee the volunteer bodkim who inspect the eruv every week. In addition to the budget, unexpected expenses crop up all the time, like when our truck broke down, when the eruv gets extended, when major repairs are needed, and whenever we need to deal with the many unpredictable issues that come up on a weekly basis. We rely on the generosity of Monsey residents to fund our vital activities. We send out mailings and anticipate a positive response. The Shulchan Aruch (Choshen Mishpat 162) obligates every person to contribute in the building of an eruv with the words “‫בני מבוי כופין זה את זה לעשות‬ ‫לחי וקורה למבוי‬,” from which it is deduced that if an eruv is constructed in a town, every resident is obligated to pay for it. The Aruch Ha’shulchan (Siman 162) adds to that, that even if an eruv is not accepted according to all shitos, and some residents don’t carry and thus don’t feel like paying, even this minority is mechuyav to sustain the eruv since it is accepted city-wide. Every resident can fulfill this obligation by contributing to the upkeep of the eruv.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME MAJOR EXPENSES RECENTLY INCURRED BY THE ERUV? We recently had to purchase a new truck at the price of $70,000. We’re also currently redoing a lot of fencing on the Thruway (the Thruway gate serves as a boundary for a large part of the eruv), which was damaged by the many recent storms.

WHO ARE SOME “FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES” THE ERUV NEEDS TO EXECUTE ITS OPERATIONS?

This summer your child will...

SAIL SMOOTHLY

There are some dedicated officials in the town and in the state, who were and continue to be instrumental in the construction, extension and maintenance of the eruv. Area utility companies, especially O&R and Verizon, help out with permits and with many technical aspects concerning the eruv, and their cooperation is what makes things possible. Christopher St. Lawrence was very influential when we were constructing the new eruv. Thruway Authority officials have also been very helpful with the proceedings. In the recent legal battle faced by the eruv with the towns of Mahwah, Montvale and Upper Saddle River, the Greater Monsey community, and all of Klal Yisroel are so grateful to lawyers Yehuda Buchweitz and David Yolkut from the legal firm Weil Gotshal and Manges LLP, who took on the case pro bono to ensure that the eruv can encompass all areas where it’s needed and that no house gets left behind. In addition, there are countless askanim who helped during that time with obtaining legal permits and to navigate the red tape.

WHO ARE YOUR VOLUNTEERS, AND WHAT DO THEY DO? We have over 30 extremely dedicated volunteers who inspect the eruv each Erev Shabbos with mesiras nefesh in all weather conditions to make sure that it’s completely kosher for Shabbos. Our truck makes its rounds for the many necessary repairs to ensure shemiras Shabbos k’hilchasah throughout the greater Monsey area. Just last week, our crew of repairmen and bodkim were still on the field at 6 p.m., repairing the eruv.

CAN YOU SHARE SOMETHING INSPIRING RELATED TO THE ERUV? The Shinaver Rav once visited a town where there was no eruv. There were several townspeople who were not yet blessed with children who came to the Rav for a bracha. He told them, “Oib es iz nisht du ahn eirev, vee azoi ken men truggen?” and assigned them to work on constructing an eruv. Time after time, I’ve seen how volunteering and donating to the eruv is a segulah for having children. About 20 years ago, when the eruv was still smaller and involved minimal expenses, I was approached by a relative who, at that point, was not yet blessed with children. He told me about his friend who had gone to the Bobover Rav, Reb Shlomo, zt”l, for a bracha for children. The Rebbe told him that he should relocate to Monsey, since Monsey has an eruv and it’s a segulah for children. My relative told me that since relocating for him wasn’t an option, he wanted to sponsor the eruv’s expenses. I told him that I commend him, but the eruv doesn’t require any major funding. He didn’t want to take no for an answer. He left $500 on my table and left. Within a year, he was blessed with a child. For years, I held on to his money, until it came to building the new eruv, and this was one of the first sponsorships used for the new eruv. And since then, there have been many who volunteered and who sponsored large sums and saw amazing yeshuos. One of our volunteers came up to my home on Purim with his child to express his hakaros hatov, since he feels that the zechus of the eruv brought his yeshuah.

CAN YOU SHARE AN INTERESTING STORY? Many years ago, on a busy Erev Shabbos Chol Hamoed, I did not get to inspect the eruv before Shabbos — the only time such a thing occurred. On Friday night, when I went to wish gut Shabbos to the Viznitzer Rebbe, zt”l, the Rebbe inquired whether I had been bodek the eruv, and that was when I remembered that I had neglected to do so. That was the only time that the Rebbe asked me if I had done the weekly inspection.

Seasoned principals, bubbies, kallah teachers, therapists, teachers and parents have embraced this revolutionary mindset, and are easily implementing it, effecting huge changes in their daily lives. What they have found is that it's not another method... It's the path of clarity they have always been looking for.

What are people saying about ‫?)י(סוד האדם‬ “After 15 years of struggle, I'm finally beginning to enjoy my most challenging child.”

A prominent reading specialist, who usually deals with only very difficult cases, reported: "I thought I had seen everything, but I had never encountered such a hopelessly disabled reader! In sheer desparation, I recalled what I had just heard at the (Ye)Sod Ha'adam speech: That every aspect of a human being is intertwined, including learning disabilities with emotions. I asked the child's mother if she'd be willing to undertake some extra steps for him, as described in the course, which she did... and... if I wasn't the child's therapist, I would never have believed this – but within 1 week he was reading!" “I had learned Shemiras Halashon and Ahavas Habrios over and over again. But after hearing the (Ye)Sod Ha'adam speech only once, I gained an entirely new perspective. My relations with others has been propelled many notches higher. All those near and dear to me are the direct beneficiaries of (Ye)Sod Ha'adam – but none as much as me!”

“My husband – and marriage – needed a big boost. Having just heard and been awed by (Ye)Sod Ha'adam, I figured I'd try out one of its teachings. To my utter astonishment, not only did some of the desired results quickly begin to materialize, but after the first week or two, my husband commented, "I don't know why, but for the first time in years I no longer seem to need a mid-day nap." – a Kollel wife in Eretz Yisroel

SOME SCENES REMAIN ETCHED UPON THE MIND. Especially if they were repeated week after week after week. I still have that vision of walking into my bedroom as a young girl on Shabbos afternoon, taking in the sight of my bed buried under a mountain of coats. The hutch of my dresser, showcasing an intimate collection of knickknacks and memories, would be in a disarray, shards of porcelain all over the shelves and the floor below. And perched on the top shelf would very likely be a nephew or two, impishly munching on a bag of chips. My sister’s bed would often fare much worse than mine, as tots of various sizes would be jumping up and down on it, shoes and all. If I was lucky, that is, and they weren’t prancing around in my shoes. I wouldn’t even bother to stop them; I had no fighting chance. I’d just turn around and shut the door behind me, fighting tears of frustration. Nothing was as much fun as shalosh seudos at Bubby’s house. Just too bad that I was Bubby’s daughter. FROM as far back as I can remember, the weekly ingathering from all over Monsey brought together a huge pool of our family’s energetic genes, and the trails the grandkids would leave behind took us by surprise each week anew. By the time they would leave, every surface would be covered with toys, wrappers and sticky residue. We’d find random items scattered, and more often than not, shattered. And it was up to us girls to put the house back together again (without as much as a sugar boost, since the pantry, fridge and freezer would be bare by the time the crowd left). We loved our nieces and nephews to pieces, but sometimes the bedlam was just too overwhelming. Time moved on, and soon I started to understand the magnetic pull of Bubby’s couch. Brain on overdrive — every cell consumed by worry, exhaustion, and plans for keeping determined toddlers at bay, every bone creaking from lack of sleep and the physical work of running a home dictated by little people — come Shabbos afternoon, I turned my doorknob, strapped little fellows into the stroller and headed to my mother for shalosh seudos. With my kids finally occupied in safe territory, all I wanted to do was close my eyes, grab something to read (along with a snack from the pantry), or just revel in being in a square foot of my own. Suddenly, I understood my siblings, the once-young mothers who had desperately needed the weekly reprieve, who couldn’t summon the energy to get their toddler out of my room, who were too exhausted to clear off the table or pack away the toys when so much work awaited them at home. The only game changer is that there are no longer any extra, eager (or even begrudgingly offered) hands. Babby’s daughters, each a queen of her own kingdom, are, baruch Hashem, no longer available to fetch a diaper, hold a baby, bring a bottle — and put the house together after the crowd disperses. All that gets left over rests squarely on my mother’s shoulders. Yes, there are always the good-hearted souls who rise to the occasion — clearing the table, organizing the toys and tackling the empty salad bowls, but when the final gut voch rings through the air, what’s left behind is what stays behind. And there is the food factor, too. In mommy’s kitchen, shalosh seudos fare is a work of heart and art: chopped salads incorporating healthful and tasty ingredients, homemade dips and dishes, heimish rolls and challah. So when other plans sometimes lead many of us elsewhere, what should be done with the extra defrosted challahs and all that uneaten food? And weeks when expecting less company, nothing is more frustrating than having five unexpected families join the fun and being faced with a shortage of prepared food. So I watch, week after week, as my mother’s house, tidy and shiny for Shabbos, gets a shaking that takes a week to clear. The time for change has come.

DO’S AND DON’TS DO NOTIFY. Let the host know when you are planning to attend, especially if you are coming with a large family. Chances are that your presence is always appreciated, but food for 5 adults and 10 kids makes a huge dent in the bowl.

DON’T TUNE OUT. It’s very tempting, and sometimes feels almost crucial, to just let the kids loose, but keep note of where they are and what they’re up to. Unpacking cabinets, going to the bathroom on their own, making a bus with dining room chairs... It’s great when kids are creative and independent, but let them do that on their own turf.

CLEANUP Don’t leave it all on the host! Divvy up the labor or assign it. • Rotations work well. If each person or family gets one job every other week, from clearing the table, to tackling the toys, to washing the dishes, to distributing the leftovers, it’s just a few minutes of each person’s time and all the difference for the hostess. • Teenage grandchildren can take turns to stay behind each week to put the house back in order once the crowd leaves. • There’s no reason the toys can’t be packed away by those who played with them. Reward the kids for cleaning up to make this go over well. Bubby’s prize box works wonders, or perhaps a treat at the door as they’re leaving the (as) sparkling (as possible) premises. • In the summer months, move the bulk of the food outdoors, to the porch or to the backyard. Dripping ices and watermelon is just so much easier to deal with outdoors. (Of course, leave no food remnants behind. You don’t want any furry visitors!)

FOOD DO TAKE HOME LEFTOVERS. One of the biggest jobs of hosting is dealing with leftover food that has no takers. (And who has the heart to throw out food?) Make sure that whatever you brought is dealt with on the way out.

DON’T LOITER. Providing that the hosts don’t specifically want the crowd to stay, when Motzei Shabbos comes around, it’s time to clean up and head home. Want to throw an impromptu men’s melaveh malkah to deal with the leftovers? Kindly arrange that elsewhere.

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 24, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Keep it simple and keep it divided. • Have a rotation system where every family member brings one item each week. Salad, some cut-up veggies and fish/spread is all that’s really needed for a complete shalosh seudos meal. Round it out with drinks and some dessert, if so desired. • Have everyone bring dips and challah, so the job doesn’t fall onto one person.

HOSTING

• Give Bubby a break every so often and invite her out along with the rest of the family by hosting the get-together at a different home. • Limit the crowd, or relocate elsewhere, on the Shabbos after a simcha, a busy week, and before or after yom tov.

The Halachos of Toys and Games on Shabbos BY: RABBI CHAVIV DANESH When our days grow longer in the summer, Shabbos afternoon means children have all the time in the world to play with family and friends. But choosing something to play from the toy closet can be trickier than it looks!

Which type of board games are assur? Long Shabbos afternoons are generally the time some families pull out their board games. However, something important to realize is that according to the Chayei Adam, games that would normally involve writing are assur to play with on Shabbos because of a gezeirah that was made in case one will come to

112 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 24, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

write. Igros Moshe even brings that competitive kids — whose Shabbos will become a disaster if they lose a game (any parent’s worst nightmare) — should consider skipping the games, as it may pose a problem of causing oneself tzaar. Of course, with some competitive kids, preventing them from playing might also be causing them tzaar. Sometimes you just can’t win…

May one play Scrabble and other similar word games (such as Bananagrams, etc.)? One is allowed to play Scrabble on Shabbos, a game where there are individual letters on each piece that

are meant to be placed alongside each other to form words. But if the letters are attached to one another, or if the game involves the kind of board on which the letters fit tightly (like Deluxe Scrabble), it is assur (Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchasah). But as mentioned above, if one is used to writing while playing Scrabble (or is a sore loser), then it is assur to play on any type of board or with any type of pieces.

May one play Monopoly and with other toys involving fake money? Rabbanim prohibited doing business on Shabbos because one may come to write when doing so. Question is — what about Monopoly, where the players use fake money? Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l, permits playing Monopoly on Shabbos because the money is not real. Rav Nissim Karelitz, shlit”a, rules that, nevertheless, it is not kavod Shabbos to be involved in these games. Today, there are Torah-related games that can take care of this problem.

May one play with Lego and Clics? So, Yanky first wanted to play

Clue, but you didn’t let him because it involves writing. Then he wanted to play Monopoly, but you sort of hemmed and hawed because you anticipated the “big blowup” in case he would lose (which he somehow always manages to do). Now he takes out his big box of Lego, a nice pencil-free and competition-free toy. Nu, Mommy, can I play? his raised eyebrows ask. Toys such as Lego and Clics, which connect together in a tight fashion and are meant to be built and taken apart continuously, are subject to dispute in regard to whether a problem of boneh exists. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l, rules that adults and kids above bar and bas mitzvah shouldn’t play with such toys, and that one should even try dissuading his younger children from playing with them because of the mitzvah of chinuch. However, if they do so on their own, one may turn a blind eye.

May one sort toys and put them away to clear the floor? To sort toys that are all over the floor in a mixture presents a problem of borer. What’s considered mixed? Good question! It’s something the poskim don’t define so clearly, so anything that appears so to the eye (even if just a safek mixture) may not be sorted. One is also not allowed to ask his kids to do it since one is metzuveh in shevisas b’no. Even if his child begins cleaning on his own, he must stop him unless the child is under the age of chinuch and is only doing it for his own entertainment and not for his parents. So what should we do with a messy floor? One eitzah is to put everything in a big garbage bag and sort everything after Shabbos. That way the floor looks clean and you’ll have something to do with your kids on Motzei Shabbos!

May one clear the table after shalosh seudos? After bentching, one may feel so tempted to throw out those empty dirty plates and clear off those messy crumbs before they end up on the floor. But how can we clear the table after shalosh seudos if it won’t be used until after Shabbos? Wouldn’t that be preparing for after Shabbos? The poskim rule that one is allowed to clear the table after shalosh seudos to tidy up the room or to keep bugs away. In this case, since the cleanup is also needed for Shabbos, it is not considered hachanah. But all this is only as long as you’ll still be staying in the room on Shabbos. Therefore, a simchah hall that wouldn’t be used after the meal may not be cleaned before havdalah. However, a kiddush that took place in a beis midrash that wouldn’t be used anymore for the remainder of Shabbos may nevertheless be cleaned, because it is not proper kavod for it to remain a mess. The same holds for a sukkah that wouldn’t be used for the remainder of Shabbos. (Based on Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchasah)

WHEN HURRICANE SANDY came roaring through it had all worked out. It had come along with a lot of tears the northeast United States, most of Monsey was, baruch and aggravation, but she now had a beautifully redone Hashem, spared from any major damage. Yes, there were home with a nice chunk of the cost covered by insurance. Fast-forward a few years, and Ruchie realized that in many blackouts and a lot of roofs needed to be replaced, but for the most part, the worry we felt was for our friends her haste to finish the work, she had neglected to think a few things through. Most of and family in areas that were the issues were minor nuiharder hit. My cousin Ruchie, living in Far Rockaway, was In your pantry, it is very important sances that she was was able shrug off. Her pantry, not so lucky. Returning home to weed out things you don’t use to however, was really getting to after staying with her mother for the duration of the storm, often. Go through it every couple her. She had grossly underestimated the amount of space she found that the lack of of weeks, throwing out stale she needed for food storage, electricity that we were grapand her pantry was burstpling with was the least of her items and giving away products ing at the seams. She called concerns. Her basement and you see no one is going to eat. back her contractor, and after first floor had flooded to the much brainstorming, they point that almost nothing became up with a spot where they could construct a larger low waist level was salvageable. After months of insurance claims and meetings with pantry that would better fit Ruchie’s needs. As soon as it contractors, Ruchie began renovations and endured close was completed, Ruchie called me up, and together we set to a year of living in a construction zone. While not quite out to create the “magazine-worthy” pantry she had always the circumstances she had envisioned, Ruchie had been dreamed of. The first thing that usually comes to mind when picplanning to redo parts of her house for a while, and when all was said and done, she was not entirely upset at the way turing a beautiful pantry is a shelf of perfectly lined up

matching containers; no boxes of cereal or pasta to be found. Yes, this does make a magnificent pantry, but it also requires a significant amount of maintenance and therefore does not work for everyone. If you know that you are not going to have the time or patience to empty each bag of lukshen or box of rice upon your return from the grocery, you are much better off with your big boxes lined up nicely and smaller items in open baskets, organized by type of product. This will still look very nice and, when properly labeled, will be easily maintainable. For those of you willing to put in the effort, my favorite containers for the pantry, though costly, are OXO. These look pretty, come in many sizes, are of very good quality and the vacuum seal really works, keeping the food fresh. Go through the grocery, making note of which items you usually stock and how much, and buy containers accordingly. If you like to have a variety of breadcrumbs, for example, buy a few containers for that purpose. These containers can be used for almost any dry foods. Use them for cereal, soup mixes, beans, barley, pretzels, crackers, candies... and anything else you can think of! Just be sure they’re labeled properly so you don’t get them mixed up. Regardless of whether you’re using containers or baskets, be sure everything is clearly labeled. Although you will likely know what goes where, chances are your husband and children will not and will need the labels to help them keep things where they belong. Basic printed labels work well, but if you want to be fancy, you can buy chalkboard labels with a chalk pen. These look cute and have the added benefit of being erasable, which means you can change the contents of the container and then just rewrite the label. If you use a lot of cans, there are many can organizers that will keep them neat and easily accessible. However, cans work just as well in neat rows, especially if you don’t use so many. Jars, such as marinara sauce, and bottles, such as cooking wine, work very well on a lazy Susan. This enables you to find what you need easily. However, they can also be put into open baskets or even just lined up nicely. Spices and any items you use regularly for cooking should ideally be kept in a cabinet close to your prep area. If you do not have a lot of room there and you use a lot of spices, keep extras in the pantry on either a lazy Susan — which is available in a very useful two-tier version — or a step-shelf organizer, both which help you see what you have without having to move things around and make a mess. As with any closet, keep the items you want accessible to children at their level. If your kids help themselves to snack bags, keep a basket or two, labeled “snacks,” on a low shelf that they can easily reach. Special treats can be kept on a higher shelf so they will have to ask for help to get to them. Heavy bottles and containers should be kept on a very low shelf to prevent injuries. In your pantry, it is very important to weed out things you don’t use often. Go through it every couple of weeks, throwing out stale items and giving away products you see no one is going to eat. There are many organizations and yeshivos that will gladly take unopened packages, so you don’t have to worry about baal tashchis. This will avoid the accumulation of unwanted food that tends to build up in a pantry, taking up valuable space and slowly turning your carefully arranged closet into a mess. Follow these tips, and soon you will have your very own magazine-worthy pantry. Chaya Dym is a professional organizer serving Monsey and beyond. Her years of experience in setting up all styles of homes with her trademark easily maintainable organization systems have earned her many satisfied clients.

Americans are developing a taste for dips of all sorts. In fact, from 2015 to 2016 alone, there was a 26 percent growth in the sales of dips.

Dips may feel like just a vegetable condiment to your fish, when in fact only a tablespoon is more fattening than just about anything you will be eating at the seudah. Some great mayo substitutes, which may give a dip the right texture sans the calories, include avocado, hummus, greek yogurt (for dairy meals), an egg and nut butter.

BIG DIPS

The two favorite dips in the U.S. at large (into which tortillas and other chips, as opposed to challah, get dunked) were salsa and guacamole, until the new star arrived at the scene: hummus.

Dizengoff is a hummus-only restaurant with branches in NYC and Philly that serves its customers mainly hummus with different toppings, with sides like salads and pita.

Although twenty years ago most Americans wouldn’t know how to pronounce the word “hummus,” never mind ever attempt to taste it, this creamy spread made from ground chickpeas, sesame paste (techina), olive oil, garlic and lemon juice has since become the number-one dip in America.

The country to set the world record for the largest plate of hummus was Beirut, Lebanon, who in 2010 filled the largest ceramic plate with 23,520 pounds of chickpea paste. It took 300 student chefs to create this dish.

During the Reagan administration, the USDA tried to get ketchup designated as a vegetable, but was unsuccessful. Salsa, however, fared a lot better in 1998, when it was successfully declared a veggie by the Department of Agriculture. DIP FOR KIDS Although technically a condiment, kids will eat almost anything with ketchup, their very own version of dip.

• There’s a bottle of ketchup in the kitchen of 97 percent of U.S. homes. • On average, each American citizen eats three bottles of ketchup per year! • Ketchup is more than just for dipping fun. The acid will make your pots and pans glow and remove tarnish from silver and

metals. • Ketchup is one of the only packaged condiments that typically do not contain preservatives. • A tablespoon of ketchup gives you all the nutritional content of a medium-sized tomato (plus a generous helping of sweetener and vinegar).

• It will come as a surprise to no one that ketchup is most eaten with… fries! • Ketchup was fraudulently touted as medication in the 1930s in the form of tomato pills. • When the turtle wins the race: While the average turtle travels at about 3 to 4 mph, ketchup’s flow speed is just 0.028 mph.

ACROSS

I’m sorry to disturb you in the middle of a family event. A group of parents came to the office and they say their children are missing.

They’re exploiting my son’s weakness and convincing him to go with them. We know that a missionary cult works under the guise of helping disadvantaged youth.

Oh, here’s the head of the anti-missionary organization. Let’s see what he’ll say.

We’ll do everything we can to get them back home and back to Yiddishkeit.

First, let’s tell one of the mothers to contact the head of the cult and ask to speak to her son, and then we’ll try to figure out where they are. But they can’t know that we are involved.

Hello, can I speak to Boris? I just want to say hi. Ummm… you must put him on. I just want to speak to him.

Listen, he went out to study. Maybe you’ll disturb him. It’ll be worth it for you if you let him be. Your son will learn a lot. I’ll give you his number.

This isn’t a typical operation. There’s a group of kids — we don’t know how many — that were taken to Switzerland. We must contact one of the major frum askanim in Europe.

Avraham’s father leaves suddenly in middle of the birthday celebration due to an emergency that came up regarding his anti-missionary activities. It’s late at night, and he yet hasn’t returned.
