I would like to make the Monsey community aware of a serious halachic issue that may come up when purchasing Costco’s delicious fruit. Just last week, I came home with bag-loads of stuff only to notice a label on the package of clementines reading “Product of Israel.” Being aware of halachic problems with produce from Israel even not during shemitah years, I was sure to return it right away. Eating it is one problem, but discarding fruit or peels is yet another serious shailah. Please shop responsibly, look out for that label and enjoy your fruits! Much hatzlacha, C.W. THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: We have looked into the matter. As per the OU, the clementines from the company Mehadrin are okay to use; terumos and maasros have been taken.

(Complementing the Kiddush, Issue 148) Thank you for the low-fat, sugar-free cheesecake featured in your Shavuos issue. I revised the recipe and used stevia packets (from the company Health Garden), which is a much healthier choice. I also used goat cheese instead of farmer cheese (which can be purchased at the grocery or from Mrs. Gertner). H.W.

(Re: The Monsey Eruv, Issue 149) I would like to express my immense feelings of gratitude to the Vaad H’Eiruv for completing, this past winter, the section of the eruv that encompasses my home. I moved to Pinebrook Road almost four years ago with no eruv. Not being able to carry on Shabbos was very difficult. I remember being locked out one week when we had guests, unable to take the key from a neighbor due to the lack of an eruv. I’m well aware of the technical and legal challenges that, at times, seemed insurmountable. Yet, with the help of Hashem, it was miraculously pulled off! This was positive news emerging from among all the hate and bigotry that surrounded this case. Kudos to you and the legal team involved. May Hashem continue sending you success in all of your endeavors. Sincerely, R.P.

Dear Basya,
CHAPTER 8
I wonder whether this is common or unusual: I almost never feel hungry or get hunger pangs. Therefore, I usually eat when it is time for a meal, such as brunch or supper, even without feeling hungry, or I eat when I feel like my brain needs food. And of course there’s the occasional noshing when I crave something good. Overall, it would seem like not feeling hunger is a good thing, but when it comes to weight management, it’s annoying because I’m eating out of logic rather than hunger when I know that I need food. I wonder what your take is on this — does this mean my body is not burning calories properly and that my metabolism is not functioning as it should? I’m in my mid-twenties, and this has been going on for at least the past five years. Thank you, (Almost) Never Hungry
Dear (Almost) Never Hungry, I’m often asked this question on a lesser scale regarding breakfast or lunch — should I eat just because it is time for food even if I don’t feel like it? My answer to this question is absolutely yes. We cannot always rely on internal cues to assess what our bodies’ needs are; your body has caloric needs regardless of whether you feel it or not. Think of it as a gas tank that needs to be refueled whether or not the red light blinks to remind you to refill it. As far as your actual metabolic state and caloric needs, the best way to assess that is via tracking your food intake as well as your actual weight. If you are eating regularly and maintaining a healthy body weight, then all is well. If you are underweight, you would need to consume more calories, whether hungry or not, and of course, the reverse if you are overweight.
58 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 30, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
One word of caution: Whenever you never feel hungry, there is a stronger likelihood that you will be tempted to consume empty calories since you aren’t eating to fill up anyway. Resist this temptation so that you will maintain your weight and your health. Best, Basya Please send in your nutrition question to info@nutritionbytanya.com, Attn: Basya. Basya Kovacs is a nutrition counselor at Nutrition by Tanya and is the manager of the Monsey and Monroe locations. Parshas Behaaloscha
By: Malka Schneps
INSPIRING STORIES OF TZADIKIM during the war years abound. Their stories are all very different, but a common thread runs through them: consistency in avodas Hashem. No matter where they were or what they endured, they made sure to perform every mitzvah they possibly could. When he was the Rav of Satmar before the war, the Satmar Rebbe, zt”l, undertook to fast every Monday and Thursday. Amazingly, despite the scarcity of food, he continued this practice even in BergenBelsen. The Klausenberger Rebbe, zt”l, did not miss hakafos on Simchas Torah in Auschwitz; he had only a few pages of mishnayos in place of a sefer Torah, he had a simple wooden stool instead of a bimah, and the Rebbe had been so badly beaten that he could barely walk, yet he limped around the stool with mishnayos in hand on Simchas Torah in Auschwitz. The Bobover Rebbe, R’ Bentzion, zt”l, was fleeing with his family from Bobov after the Nazis, yemach shemom, had invaded Poland and were advancing east. After they had traveled for quite some time, some members of the group informed the Rebbe’s son, Reb Shloime, that they were extremely hungry and were finding it difficult to keep walking without nourishment. R’ Shloime apprised his father of their condition, and he agreed that under the circumstances they would have no choice but to eat before davening — but he insisted that they should walk just a little further in the hopes of finding water. After all, the Rebbe noted, just because they had to eat before davening did not mean they had to eat without washing, and they might yet find water. A few moments later, they did indeed pass a stream and were able to wash. It says in this week’s parsha, “Vaya’as kein Aharon… — And Aharon did so; he lit the lamps toward the face of the menorah, just as Hashem had commanded Moshe” (Bamidbar 8:3). Rashi, citing the Sifrei (1:5), says that Aharon’s praise is that he did not deviate [from Hashem’s command]. One might wonder why it is considered especially praiseworthy that Aharon did exactly as Hashem had commanded him. After all, this is what we would expect from a tzadik, espe-

cially one of Aharon Hakohen’s caliber. Being perfectly consistent in the performance of a mitzvah over a long period of time, even one that may not appear difficult to do, such as lighting the menorah, is extremely challenging. It takes tremendous strength and dedication. Life has ups and downs, and no person escapes dark times of suffering. Being steady in the performance of mitzvos during such times takes great effort. Consistency in avodas Hashem takes great effort, but it also takes planning. The Satmar Rebbe, R’ Yoel, zechuso yugein aleinu, surely lit Chanukah licht each year. Certainly it was not difficult for him to do so in Williamsburg, and his having done so there does not reveal the depths of his greatness. The challenge arose in Bergen-Belsen. The Rebbe planned ahead long in advance, bribing the camp officials for oil, wicks and cups, which he buried near the fence in anticipation of Chanukah. Being consistent in our avodas Hashem is something that takes great dedication, effort and planning. It means foreseeing difficulties and having contingency plans in place. A person may decide to say a certain amount of Tehillim every day, and for a while it might not be such a challenge. However, over the course of a lifetime, it is inevitable that major obstacles will arise. Perhaps they will be hospitalized at some point. If they did not have their Tehillim with them, will they make sure to have someone bring one? If they were extremely scrupulous to make sure that no day ever be skipped, perhaps they planned ahead and memorized many kapitlach of Tehillim. We may not realize it, but it is consistency in performing mitzvos at all times and in all circumstances that is the hallmark of tzadikim. “He laid tefillin every day, even in communist Russia…” “He chopped the ice in the river so that he could immerse in the mikvah…” “He fasted every Monday and Thursday, even in Bergen-Belsen…” May we all learn from the example of Aharon Hakohen and make every effort to be consistent in every aspect of our avodas Hashem, and may this be our praise.

Accidental Poisoning Death a Reminder to Keep Dangerous Substances Far Out of Reach of Children THE TRAGIC DEATH of a 4-year-old Kiryas Yoel boy who was poisoned after accidentally ingesting rust stain remover has brought renewed calls for vigilance when storing dangerous household chemicals. VIN News reported that the boy was found with a bottle of Whink Rust Stain Remover, whose brown plastic bottle closely resembles a bottle of chocolate syrup. The child was rushed to Orange Regional Medical Center, before being transported to Westchester Medical Center where doctors were unable to save him. After being alerted to the incident by Kiryas Yoel school
superintendent Joel Petlin, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission said that it would be investigating if the product in question falls under its jurisdiction. Expressing his sorrow over the devastating accident, Monroe supervisor Harley Doles said that numerous parents have contacted Whink’s manufacturer, the Rustoleum company, and asked them to change the product’s packaging. Whink does have a child safety cap and is clearly labeled as highly toxic. As always, parents are reminded not to keep dangerous cleaning products in areas that are accessible to children in order to prevent future tragedies.
Minor Earthquake Hits Near New Square AN EARTHQUAKE so mild it was likely not felt by anyone hit Hillcrest last Friday afternoon. According to The Journal News, the 1.8 magnitude earthquake had a depth of approximately three miles and was recorded at 4:22 p.m. by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, located near the New York-New Jersey border. Quakes that fall below 2.5 magnitude typically pass unnoticed.
The last earthquake to hit Rockland County was also a minor one, hitting Hillburn and Sloatsburg in January 2016 and registering a magnitude of 2.1 on the Richter scale. The most recent significant earthquake felt in our area took place in April 2011 when a 5.8 magnitude quake with an epicenter in Richmond, Virginia, was felt as far north as the Monsey area.
Turtle Advisory Issued for Motorists POLICE IN TWO DIFFERENT Rockland County towns have been warning drivers to use caution because of tortoises that have been found on area roadways. Ramapo Daily Voice reported that tortoises have been seen traveling slowly across Western Highway in Blauvelt near the West Nyack border. According to The Journal News, a second incident had police responding to a report of a tortoise blocking a road in Haverstraw. This time of year is egg-laying season for local turtles, advised the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, with the animals crossing roads in order to find sandy patches or loose soil where they can lay their eggs. Thousands of turtles are reportedly killed each year by cars. Police are advising drivers to be on the lookout for turtles on the roadway and cautioning anyone who has to move a tortoise to pick it up by holding the sides, near the back of the shell, and not by the tail, which can cause spinal damage.

EVERY MISHNAH in Pirkei Avos is filled with wisdom. It is difficult to find only one pshat to explain the entire mishnah. However, the main objective is not only to keep looking for another beautiful pshat, but rather to find within each mishnah some practical guidance that will help each of us become a better Yid today. In this week’s portion, in Perek Beis, Mishna 14, it is written: “He said to them: Go and seek which is the worst and most evil path that a person should avoid. Rabi Eliezer said: An evil eye. Rabi Yehoshua said: An evil friend. Rabi Yosi said: An evil neighbor. Rabi Shimon said: To borrow and not to repay, for one who borrows from man is as one who borrows from Hashem, as is stated, ‘The wicked man
borrows and does not repay, but the righteous One is benevolent and gives’ (Tehillim 37:21). Rabi Elazar said: An evil heart. He said to them: I see the words of Rabbi Elazar ben Arach [as better than] all of yours, for your words are included in his.” It is written in Darkei Noam, in the name of the Kadmon Redak, that our mishnah doesn’t simply mean a “good heart” or an “evil heart,” but rather good on the heart or evil on the heart. In other words, a person with evil on his heart will have feelings of bitterness or anger sitting on his heart and will carry these emotions with him wherever he goes. We can shed more light on this idea by learning the mishnah (Pirkei Avos 5:22) that explains how

one can identify the students of Avraham Avinu and the students of Bilaam Harasha: “…The students of our forefather Avraham have a good eye, a meek spirit and a humble soul. The disciples of Bilaam the wicked have an evil eye, a haughty spirit and a greedy soul.” The Nesivos Sholom (Chelek 1) explains that this mishnah can help someone determine whether he is under the influence of the Yetzer Hara, because these three traits reflect a person’s spiritual condition. A person who has a good eye, a meek spirit and a humble soul is helpful and kind to others and is a pleasure to be around. This ultimately reflects his positive spiritual state. If the opposite is true, and he displays the qualities found in the disciples of the wicked Bilaam, his behavior reflects his inferior spiritual state. The explanation of the Nesivos Sholom fits well with the previous idea, quoted in the Darkei Noam. A person who carries bitterness on his heart will look at everything with an evil eye and will have a haughty spirit. Thus, we can see how the different types of feelings that we carry around are a reflection of our spiritual status. The sefer Darkei Noam brings down the famous parable of a simple villager who marries the daughter of a king. When he brings her to his village, he keeps offering her things, but can never make her happy. Something like fresh milk may be a treat in his world, but doesn’t come close to what she is accustomed to. In his simple village, he can never recreate the atmosphere she enjoyed when she lived in the royal palace. Each one of us has a chelek Elokai — our holy neshamah. Just like the princess can never find her place in the village, so too does the neshamah struggle to find joy when it resides in a human body in a materialistic world. All the pleasures of this world will never make our neshamah happy. However, if we can create an atmosphere that is similar to the one our neshamah comes from, by living a life of spirituality and goodness, our neshamah will be b’simcha. When we work on our emunah, we live with a constant connection to Hashem and thus with true joy. Conversely, when there is evil on the heart, there is bitterness and ayin ra, these feelings reflect a lack of spiritual connection. In this state, we cannot serve Hashem with joy, and as we know, the Torah speaks very harshly about this: “…tachas asher lo ovadeto Hashem Elokecha b’simcha.” A true feeling of simcha is not simply about our mood in the moment. Rather, it’s about our bitul to the Ribono Shel Olam and a belief that whatever He does is for our good. This bitul nullifies the bitterness and negative feelings, so that we can live with “good on our heart” and resemble the students of Avraham Avinu.
However, if we can create an atmosphere that is similar to the one our neshamah comes from, by living a life of spirituality and goodness, our neshamah will be b’simcha.

What’s More Important For Weight Loss? Exercise Or Diet? Ah… the age old question. The question that we all want to know the answer to.
In order to make the results permanent they have to make permanent changes.
This week I am going to give it to you straight.
This type of thinking enables people to view dieting, exercise, recovery, and everything in between in a way that allows them to fit it into their lives.
The answer is … *Drum roll please* Dieting! Dieting alone will make you lose weight. Technically, you don't need to exercise.
They understand that there is going to be struggles. They are ready for it. They understand that dieting will help them lose wight but exercise is equally as important for a healthy body as eating and sleeping is.
easier? You need to start from the foundation. You need to start working on yourself. Developing the right mindset. The winning attitude. Having the right strategies and tactics. It'd be nice if were possible to lose 20 lbs in one month. Wouldn't you like to lose 20 lbs. once and for all? Then you know what needs to happen.
On the other hand, if you workout but your diet is poor you will never lose weight. The old rule says, “You can’t out train bad nutrition.” Before you go running off to cancel your gym membership -- let me just say that the question alone indicates to me that you wont have a very high chance of being successful. In fact, trying to lose weight is the reason most of us suffer from yo-yo diet syndrome. If your focus is solely on losing weight unfortunately the results will never be maintained.
The person that is constantly trying to lose weight is looking for the tricks and strategies that will help them zap away the fat. The quicker the results, the better. These tricks and strategies don’t address the real issue. I have said this before and I am going to keep on saying this: The real issue is not the weight. The real issue is the lifestyle. If you never address the lifestyle. If you are always focused on losing weight alone. Following a program that mainly focuses is getting you there the fastest. I am afraid to say it is never going to work.
The mindset that is looking for weight loss isn't the same as the person that is successful with weight loss. The people that are successful understand, they adapt the mindset that the lifestyle is what needs to be changed.
Yes, it is hard to lose weight. But wait till you have to maintain the results! That's a whole different story. But what is the alternative? Letting your health decline? You think that would be

You need to make the right changes once and for all. Some of us are really crunched for time. Don't have a second to breathe. If this is the case for you then you need to manage your expectations. If you can only give 30 minutes to yourself per day then start with that. Understand that 30 minutes a day will not lead to 20 lbs weight reduction in one month. Understand that it might just take a year to lose that 20 pounds. That is ok. If you want the results to come quicker then you got to put in more work. MANY YEARS AGO, WHEN MY FAMILY would vacation up north, my first stop would be the souvenir shop for deer-related mementos —– you know, like a laminated slice of wood featuring Bambi sunning at the edge of a babbling brook surrounded by her downy newborns. (They were pricier than schnapps glasses and back scratchers, however…) The sheer beauty of these sleek animals can take your breath away — different fur coats for different seasons, polka dots on the newborns (after three months, those disappear completely), and those impossibly thin stalk-like legs fully supporting such strong, lithe bodies. Well, folks, deer have come out of hiding. It appears that Mrs. Doe and family have moved in with us; they are totally at home among us humanoids. When I come out in the morning, she’s waiting patiently at my deck gate for dessert (she already breakfasted on my hostas, tulips and hyacinths). Loud hand-clapping, yelling “shoo” and hurtling bath towels elicits just a slight quiver of her ears, kinda like, “Why the bellyaching — I was here first; what are you doing here?” And it becomes a staring contest that I’ll undoubtedly lose. I’m thinking, “You know, you’re really a beautiful animal, but animals belong in the woods, not on my lawn, definitely not in my flower bed, and most certainly not at my doorstep! And, you’re probably not even aware of the abys-

mal fact that you’re shedding tics all over the place like dandruff, and my grandchildren play in my yard, and sniff, sniff...” and the waterworks start in earnest. Bambi looks at me with mild curiosity — or is it disdain? — and I can almost vouch that she’s snickering, given her heaving haunches and slightly upturned lips, for crying out loud
(no pun intended). Is there a rhyme to a deer’s meandering, or is it random? Not at all. Mama Doe maps out a route for her young ones to follow, sort of like trailblazing — she rubs her body against trees and shrubs along the way, leaving scented signposts designating prime feasting areas for her young. Neither rain nor wind will obliterate these markers, and interestingly enough, they’ve been known to last for many years! The deer in our neighborhood seem to follow an exact, predetermined route every single day without fail for years, I kid you not. What to do? I have a few tricks up my sleeve — some are effective in the beginning of the season, and others mid-summer and so on. (Though no guarantees whatsoever, dear readers.) I like using Milorganite, which is a granular product (it’s actually processed sewage, not kidding) and is readily available at most garden centers. As a bonus, it contains nitrogen to help green up your plants. I liberally sprinkle this on all plants and flowers that deer gravitate to. And yes, you’ll need to reapply after a couple of rainstorms since the odor dissipates, rendering this product ineffective as a deterrent. Try not to do this on Erev Shabbos as your shul-attending neighbors will not appreciate the “aroma” (eau de skunk).

Another effective deterrent is a spray called Deer Be Gon, manufactured by Ortho. Apply on a calm day, preferably in the evening when the sun is gone, and follow the instructions carefully. This product should be reapplied after repeated rainfall. Keep rotating with different brands for optimal effectiveness; some will contain peppermint to mask odors (somewhat). A third option is to call the folks at a local fencing shop to install fencing — it’ll have to be at least 8 to 10 feet tall to keep the deer out, as they can easily scale a fence that’s six or seven feet tall to indulge in a tasty meal. If the fence is not see-through, the deer will definitely move on and burglarize your neighbors — they look before they leap. A nifty piece of advice — plant flowers with lacy, fernlike leaves, such as cosmos, around the garden borders; deer will avoid these at all costs since the leaves tickle their noses and make them sneeze (a ground-moving experience). Let’s move on to the squirrel saga. These scampering, frolicking marauders can and will decimate your newly planted flower pots overnight. They paw though the soil, hurling your fledgling plants clear across the porch in a frenzy, hoping to find a stray acorn somewhere in the mix. Enter Repels-All, a Bonide product that comes in a spray or in granulated form, designed to repel all four-legged interlopers. This, too, is somewhat malodorous, but that’s the whole point! Squirrels are smart and awfully cunning. They can launch their bodies from quite a distance to reach a filled feeder, and will systematically eat their fill while dangling upside down. There are some cleverly designed squirrel-proof feeders that claim to deter them, but I haven’t found them incredibly effective. Note: Squirrels will not

touch safflower seed, so substitute standard sunflower seeds with these — you’ll need to fill your feeder every four days instead of twice a day (huge $avings). Did you ever come across a perfectly round grapefruit-sized hole at the edge of your lawn or under your shed? It’s probably the front entrance to Chez Groundhog (aka woodchuck). The burrow is so complex, it’s an architectural marvel, an underground city. It contains actual apartments and subdivisions branching off of main tunnels that can span many miles. That being said, your pestcontrol guy will drop them off at least three miles away so they won’t come running back home again. It’s sort of hilarious to spot a groundhog standing on his hind legs — he looks like a praying mantis complete with a buck-toothed grin. His front teeth act as mini shovels utilized to excavate underground tunnels. But that’s not all he does. Chucky has a predilection for newly sprouted anythings in your garden; he can spot a cluster of inch-high sunflower plants from a few hundred feet away, and will shuffle over, nose to the
ground, and inhale them all. Baby chuckies do not startle easily, but Ma and Pa scamper away at a rapid clip when threatened — zooming over to the closest entry hole and disappearing inside. How wondrous is it that each animal that Hashem created is unique, possessing his own set of codes by which he lives, seeks food, and protects himself from threat. Each will carve out a niche for himself within His vast empire and will procreate and fulfill its unique designated purpose. It is for that express reason that my article is not entitled, “This Is WAR — Shoot Those Marauders,” or “Blast Those Felonious Critters into Outer Space.” After much soul-searching, I have come to accept that each animal that comes a-sniffing in my garden has been instructed to do so by our Master Planner, and is simply fulfilling Hashem’s command. So if you’ve tried and succeeded only some of the time, so be it. Don’t let it dampen your spirit! Keep at it, go forward, and may Hashem reward all your endeavors l’tovah! Again, happy gardening!

AHHH! SUMMER’S HERE AND THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE green stuff. Manicured lawns, canopied trees and blossoming vegetation perfume the air and beautify our beloved Monsey. But there’s one type of plant you can rest assured that you’d rather not meet: poison ivy. Innocuous in appearance, poison ivy is rampant round these parts. In fact, the entire US of A struggles with poison ivy overgrowth, save for the western regions, which are often blissfully spared from this rashinducing plant. Despite its ominous-sounding name, poison ivy (or toxicodendron radicans in geek speak), doesn’t actually contain poison. Proof of that comes in the form of the many animals who consider it a delicacy. It does, however, contain a powerful allergen called urushiol. Urushiol is a chemical compound found in the oil of the plant, which can activate an immune response in human beings. The good news is that not everyone is allergic to urushiol, though about 75 percent (or more) of the population is. Tongue-in-cheek safety tip #1: Don’t try your luck by petting a P.I. plant. It just ain’t worth it!
When reacting to poison ivy, the symptoms are always delayed and begin to appear anywhere from several hours to several days after contact. They can also last up to a month! Having a reaction to poison ivy is an incredibly horrific and unsightly experience. In addition to unbearable itch and redness, there can be swelling, blistering and ooze. In severe cases, there can even be fever, and rarely, anaphylaxis. And it’s not just skin contact that can cause problems; if the plant comes into contact with the inside of the mouth or is airborne through fire and smoke, extremely severe — and possibly fatal — reactions can occur. Tongue-in-cheek safety tip #2: Don’t ever roast a hot dog on a poison ivy vine…

ID THE IVY The best method of skipping the suffering is, of course, prevention. Get to know the P.I. plant so you can scout out your backyard and places your family visits. The following little ditties will help you remember the signs to look for. LEAFLETS THREE, LET IT BE!
Most people know to look for three leaflets, but the truth is that there are more specific leaf signs you can look for to positively identify our culprit. 1. The leaves are almond-shaped, starting out wide at the base and coming to a point at the end. 2. The leaves may be asymmetrically serrated or not; variation is the name of the game! 3. Often, the leaves appear shiny or waxy, but that may not always be the case, especially after a rain. 4. Two of the leaflets on a stem are directly across from one another and begin growing straight out of the stem. The central leaflet has a longer stalk. Or, as another ditty goes, LONGER MIDDLE STEM, STAY AWAY FROM THEM! 5. The leaves may change color depending on the season. They may range from orange to red to a variety of greens.
Note the asymmetrically serrated side leaves. This is one presentation.
Note the longer stalk on the central leaflet. Note the waxy shine. This P.I. plant does not have serrated edges.

HAIRY VINE, NO FRIEND OF MINE!
Poison ivy loves the sun and will happily wrap its way around a tree trunk in its race to the top. To anchor it, the poison ivy vine grows hairy roots that grab hold of the tree. These hairy roots can also be found anchoring P.I. to other surfaces, such as fences, sheds and walls. Young vines have shorter, tamer roots, while older vines can be positively ugly with their messy “hair.” In the winter months, poison ivy leaves disappear, but the vine remains, and it’s just as toxic as the leaves.
Look closely and notice the hairy roots of this young vine.
The wild mane of a elderly vine.
BERRIES WHITE, RUN IN FRIGHT!
Poison ivy bears hard white berries that flower during the summer. If you see white berries on a plant, you really don’t want to touch it… But let’s face it: If you’re close enough to notice the berries on a poison ivy plant — which often hide its berries well — you’re probably in need of some immediate washing up!
The unblossomed berries of a poison ivy plant
P.I. berries in bloom
Note:
Poison ivy is an adventurous plant. It can be found growing on the ground, creeping up a tree, or pretending to be an innocent little bush. P.I. is quite common in urban areas and can often be found at the edges of roads or trails, around trees, and yes, just hanging around your patio...

HOW TO HANDLE PREVENTING A BREAKOUT
CLASS
anecdote.nyc
Despite detective work that has you trying to identify rogue plants, a brush with poison ivy may happen. Though the reaction won’t be seen until hours or days later, absorption of the allergen into the skin begins within roughly ten minutes of contact. If one realizes right away that they’ve come into contact with a P.I. plant, the first step is to wash well with dish soap and water — preferably cold to help prevent the pores from absorbing the urushiol. Abrasion helps tremendously to wash away the allergen, so using a rag is recommended. You can also add something abrasive in nature, such as sugar granules. Clothing, tools or toys that have come into contact with poison ivy also need to be washed with soap and water or rubbing alcohol, because urushiol can remain active on surfaces for well over a year! If you don’t have the ability to wash up right away, look around for a jewelweed plant, which many times grows near poison ivy. Inside the stem of the jewelweed plant is a sap that can prevent a reaction. Just crush the stem and smear it on the affected area. According to studies, this method isn’t as effective as a good wash-up, but does work fairly well in a pinch.

If, unfortunately, there is a breakout, try the following methods to get some comfort until healing occurs. • Jewelweed comes in handy after the fact, too. Collect a handful of jewelweed stems and steep in boiling water for an hour, then freeze in an ice cube tray. Rub jewelweed ice cubes on affected skin for relief. • A baking soda paste is found by many to be comforting. Simply mix 1 tablespoon baking soda with enough water to form a paste, and cover affected area. • Calamine lotion may provide relief and dry up ooze. • Oatmeal baths, or even cooked oatmeal applied as a paste, can relieve the rash somewhat. • Raw potatoes made into a paste and covered with a wet cloth can pull out heat from the rash in the same manner it does with burns. • Pouring cold coffee over the affected skin or applying a cloth soaked in cold coffee can help reduce inflammation and itch. • Domeboro solution or gel, available over the counter at the pharmacy, dries up ooze and soothes itch. • Atarax (hydroxyzine), a prescription antihistamine, can reduce itch. If the rash is unbearable and there is no prior history of steroid addiction (which can appear as recurring eczema upon stopping steroids), a medium-strength steroid cream prescribed by your doctor can be used for up to ten days on the rash. Topical steroids, however, should never be used on the face, armpits or groin, and never on a very young child. Likewise, if the rash is terrible and there is intense suffering, a person who has no prior history of steroid addiction can safely use oral steroids for 7 to 10 days with no concern, according to Dr. Marvin Rapaport, dermatologist and UCLA Professor of Medicine. (If there is a history of steroid addiction, use of steroids can reactivate or significantly worsen the condition.) And of course, if there is any sign of a severe allergic reaction, seek medical help immediately. WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE, a poison ivy reaction is not something you want to experience. Keep your eyes open, daven for protection in all areas of life, and have poison ivy safely removed if you locate it. Wishing you a gezunte zimmer!

BRAZILIAN HAMMOCKS What is it about hammocks and rocking swings and benches that are relaxing upon sight? I think it’s not only the swaying motion that’s soothing, but the fact that they actually force you to let go. To keep from being hurtled to the ground while suspended in mid-air, you have to completely relinquish control to Newton’s Third Law of Motion and allow yourself to be carried by the wind. And only then can every muscle unknot and every last bit of tension dissipate into the breeze. If you want to create a cozy haven in your backyard or on your porch, the options are endless. Here’s just a smattering of what’s available out there in relaxing garden furniture pieces.
Made of a strong fabric, these are designed to wrap the person pod-style from all sides and are sturdier than the flatter versions. Pictured hammock is priced at $49

The weather is finally (finally!) speaking of summer. Out come the outdoor toys, the new and the old. There’s nothing like taking that shining, brand-new riding toy out of the box. Much like a pair of new shoes, you watch it the first few days, polishing it and wiping off scuff marks. And then, with time, you relax, letting it fulfill its purpose. It gets banged up, scratched up, ridden for thrills and borrowed by the neighbors. And then the parts go missing. While plastic keys can be replaced with the real deal from Tatty’s collection, frisbees can take the place of steering wheels gone awry, no-toot horns are fun too (and less noisy), you can replace many of the missing parts for just a minimal fee. Here is a selection of some popular bikes on Monsey’s streets and the replacement parts available. This is to give you an idea of what is generally replaceable. Check in with each company for your specific riding toy. When ordering, make sure you have the model number, year of manufacture and color of the bike at the ready.

He was a mere 17 years old when his father, the revered Rav of Skulen, Harav Yisroel Avraham Portugal, ztl, was niftar — causing the yoke of leadership to fall upon his young shoulders. Everyone knew the young man was capable, due both to his wisdom and piety, and rabbanim came by the droves to endorse his leadership. Like a glove upon the hand of its wearer, Harav Eliezer Zusia Portugal settled into his new position, praying to bring blessing upon the community and upon the memory of his beloved father.
OVER IN FRUMUSICA, ANOTHER YOUNG ORPHAN PACKED HER BAGS. Sheina Rochel Sheinfeld was set to become the Rebbetzin of Skulen. The marriage between the two yesomim proved to be a beautiful one, based upon the foundations of Torah and mutual respect. For Rebbetzin Sheina Rochel, there was nothing sweeter than the sound of her husband’s learning and partnering with him as he led the community. But still, there were moments of loneliness, of aching for family who’d crossed over to the World of Truth and for those who lived, but were many kilometers away. In those days, nothing was instant. There were no cell phones or other forms of quick communication. And the roads there left much to be desired, causing travel to be an arduous affair. Imagine then the surprise when Rebbetzin Portugal answered the knock one day to find her beloved sister Rivka standing before her. She’d traveled many miles aboard a horse and buggy to check upon Sheina Rochel’s well-being. With long-distance communication being difficult, it was hard to truly know how her sister was faring Tzion of the Shem U’Sharis Yisroel, Harav Yisroel Avraham in her new town, with her new husband. ner dynasty had already settled upon these shores, the previous Rebbe, Harav Eliezer Zusia, zt”l, summoned his daughter-in-law, the tzadekes Rebbetzin Raizel bas Menachem Zev, a”h, and enjoined upon her to collect funds for hachnasas kallah. The Rebbe himself could not be busy with collecting for this vital cause as he was consumed with the operations of the Skulener mosdos in Eretz Yisroel. She should make parties, he instructed, to bring in funds. The mitzvah of hachnasas kallah is so powerful, he said, that the zechusim are not only for the chassan and kallah who are helped, but for all of the doros that come from them. The previous Rebbe, zt”l, also said that he bentches whoever will help the hachnasas kallah fund that they will be helped by the Eibishter with whatever they need. With this great task upon her shoulders, Rebbetzin Raizel, a”h, was mekayem this precious mitzvah and the word of the Rebbe with great mesiras nefesh. Parties were made, funds were raised and couples got married. And the mesiras nefesh continues today through Tzidkas Rochel, the hachnasas kallah fund named for Rebbetzin Sheina Rochel, a”h, whose entire life was devoted to giving to Klal Yisroel. Each year, thousands of chasanim and kallos receive aid for their weddings straight from the hand of the Rebbe, shlit”a. And we know that for those who support the fund established in her memory, the Rebbetzin Sheina Rochel, a”h, will surely be an advocate for them from Above. BUILD YOUR OWN FOREVER FURNITURE Join Tzidkas Rochel in creating zechusim that will last forever. The hachnasas kallah party arranged by Rebbetzin Nechama Klughaupt, daughter of the Rebbe, shlit”a, will take place this coming Sunday, June 3, at 16 Francis Place in the home of Mrs. Estie Neiman. The doors will be open from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Rebbe, shlit”a, personally sends his special bracha to all who will partake in this worthy event. By giving to Tzidkas Rochel, you help not only one couple, but the doros that will come from them, and your money will become “furniture that lasts forever.” Hope to see you there!
This party of Tzidkas Rochel is dedicated l’ilui nishmas the late Skulener Rebbetzin, Raizel bas Menachem Zev, and for the complete refuah shleimah of the heiliger Skulener Rebbe, Harav Yisroel Avraham ben Sheina Rochel, shlit”a.

The Monsey View interviews Moishy Fulop and Moshe Glauber, who constructed their very own homemade treehouse on Blueberry Hill Road.
Who built this amazing treehouse? It was a group of four boys from our neighborhood, all between 11 and 12 years old. How long did it take for you to build the treehouse? We worked on it for approximately three weeks. What were the supplies needed? Wood, hammer, nails, screws, drill and saw (adult help needed), and ladder. Where did you get all the wood? We collected the wood from our neighbors. Some pieces were scraps, and the ones that were still usable were happily donated. Do you have any experience in building? Yes, we’ve been helping our fathers with the sukkah, from which we learned a lot about basic building. We also recently built some great props for a play; it was actually then that we had the idea to build a treehouse. What made you undertake this project? We were looking for a fun and exciting way to fill up our free time.
126 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Did you need any adult help? Our older brothers helped us when we needed tools that aren’t safe, like a drill or saw.
rains, since you can be outdoors and still remain dry. Of course, in a thunderstorm it is not safe to go in.
What was the trickiest part of building your treehouse? Building solid supports and making sure they’re strong enough to hold the treehouse and the weight of any visitors it would have. It was quite a job. But after a lot of work, we baruch Hashem got it right.
Can you share a lesson this neighborhood project taught you? Never give up! The treehouse you see here was actually our fifth try. We were nearly ready to give up; each of our previous attempts collapsed from the rain or wind, but we learned what went wrong, and made sure to make it better the next time.
Had you known what you now know when you started, what would you have done differently? We would’ve first built a frame for the main room using two-by-fours. We started working, and only once it was partly up did we work on a frame. This made the job much more difficult.
Do you have some tips to share with other boys who’d like to build their own treehouse? 1. Make sure to work with the right tree. You’ll need one that gives you enough support and has the right spot for a treehouse. 2. Work on an area where the ground is straight. It’s very difficult to build something steady on slanted ground. 3. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, especially if it’s not something that is safe for you to do on your own.
What are you currently using your treehouse for? We put down a nice vinyl floor, and it’s our neighborhood cozy place. It’s especially useful when it

clothing closet, is to purchase enough hangers for all of the things you plan to hang there. Always buy extras as you will be adding clothing to the closet and don’t want to get stuck. Velvet hangers are generally the best option for regular clothing. They are inexpensive, come in many colors to match any decor, and are excellent for space-saving purposes. The only clothes item I find that doesn’t work well with these hangers are men’s suits. These need to be hung on sturdy wood or thick lucite hangers. When hanging clothing, make sure to hang each item facing the same direction and to close all buttons and zippers. This is another tip I learned from my high school home management teacher, and it’s a simple thing that really enhances the look of any closet. Also, be sure to hang similar items together: long skirts, short skirts, blouses, jackets... Out-of-season clothing should either be kept in storage or in the back of the closet, if you have the extra space. If you do not have drawer space for items that don’t fold nicely, such as socks, tights or tzitzis, you can put them into baskets on a shelf. Just make sure to label the baskets so everyone knows where to find and put away these things. Belts and scarves can either be stored in baskets too, or you can purchase special hangers made just for this purpose. Ties should be hung on a specialty hanger as well. There are many versions of these hangers, so look around and choose the one that works best for your needs. Many closets have long shelves that are great for piles of clothing, but after a while, the piles start to fall onto each other. A great solution for this is to use shelf dividers. These keep each pile in its own place, enabling the closet to be neat as a pin with very little effort. The same idea goes for large drawers that can be used for a few different items. Invest in drawer dividers, which will instantly convert one drawer into a few separate compartments. Drawer dividers are usually adjustable and work for almost any size drawer. Shoes are often the hardest items to place. They’re bulky, and many people have a lot of them. If you have room on your shelves, you can line them up there. If you’re low on shelving space but have extra room on the closet floor, you can put in a few shelves and line the shoes up there. A great space-saving option is a shoe organizer that you can hang on the clothing rod. These take up very little room and each one can usually hold around ten pairs of shoes. For closets with a lot of extra hanging space and a lot of shoes, these are available in much bigger versions. Shoe organizers are also sold in over-the-door variations, but these are not my first choice as they block the door from closing completely, and I like to hang a full-length mirror on the inside of the door. Another option, one that gives a very nice look but takes up a lot of space and requires energy to maintain, is keeping each pair in a labeled clear shoe box. This is also costly and clearly not for everyone, but is a more aesthetic option. The best way to keep a clothes closet well organized is to make sure to put items back right away. If you’re in a hurry when you get dressed, trying on a few options and leaving them on the floor, make sure to put them away as soon as you get home. As with every closet, if you let it pile up, that’s when the trouble starts and the disorganization begins. Chaya Dym is a professional organizer serving Monsey and beyond. Her years of experience in setting up all styles of homes with her trademark easily maintainable organization systems have earned her many satisfied clients.

A HISTORY
Swings have been around for a long, long time. Since they can be crafted from just about anything — think vines, ropes and wood — historians have found evidence that even in ancient times people have enjoyed the thrill of swinging through the air.
Moving forward to later centuries, European paintings of the 1700s often portrayed their subjects on outdoor swings. Posing on a swing lent a light, joyful tone to the picture, and one could almost imagine seeing it move ever so gently to and fro.
Later, over in the United States, families moving west found swings the ideal source of entertainment for children each time their wagons stopped. All they needed was a tree (which were scarce in the prairies and grew near river valleys) and a little rope, and pioneer children got their chance to play.
Back in Europe, the first swingsets were built alongside schools to teach children how to get along with one another, and 1859 found the first public playground built in Manchester, England. Soon playgrounds like these were cropping up all over, and its idea spread worldwide.
IN 1887, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park became home to the very first playground across the ocean, and — in a twist typical of that era of innovation — the swings there were the first to hang from their own frames, instead of being suspended from a conveniently located tree.
By the late 1800s, swingsets were built with safety in mind, and their design became standardized. Since these years found activists working hard to eradicate child labor, or at least limit children’s working hours, public playgrounds grew in popularity just in time to offer hard-working children the opportunity to simply have fun.
Public playgrounds and swingsets again aligned themselves with U.S. history when FDR’s Work Progress Administration, established to create jobs for unemployed Americans, built thousands of parks nationwide.
134 / THE MONSEY VIEW
All this time, up until the mid-1900s, swingsets were only found in public playgrounds. Only after World War II, when a strong economy had families purchasing their own homes in the suburbs, did the concept of a backyard swingset take off.
The Guiness World Record for the longest swingset ever built went to a partnership between Backyard Discovery, a swingset manufacturer, and a local charity in 2016. This swingset, comprised of a row of 51 attached swingsets, stretched across 562 feet of a large Florida field and contained 127 swings. That must have entertained a fair number of kids!
The record-holding tallest swing in the world is a bungee swing that is over 280 feet high! This swing was constructed in South Africa’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, where those who are in for an uber-thrill can swing from a platform built near the top of the far wall for the ride of their life!
The scariest swing in the world is no doubt the one located at the La Casa del Árbol (The Treehouse) in Baños, Ecuador. Hanging from a treehouse set high in a tree right at the edge of a massive cliff, this swing overlooks the abyss below. Try it to see what it feels like to swing into the clouds!
