AN ESCAPE EXCURSION RIGHT HERE IN MONSEY (Re: Excursions, Issue 156) After reading your feature about Escape Rooms, I’d like to make readers aware that a frum family just opened a heimishe escape room in their basement in Monsey this past Chol Hamoed Pesach. They will be closed during bein hazmanim, but will reopen August 19. The cost will be $18 per person as of Sukkos time. There is a $50 minimum. The escape room is for ages 12 to adult, and up to 10 people can fit inside the room. Anyone interested in booking a 60-minute time slot can call Mrs. Herzog at 845-356-3515 once they reopen. L.H.
RE: CHOKED IN TIME (Inbox, Issue 155) I’d like to point out something very important in response to the letter from a woman who wrote how fortunate she was that her husband insisted on having a fire extinguisher, so that when there was an oven fire, he opened the oven door and put it out. Please be aware that when there is a food fire in any oven, the first thing to do is to turn off the oven while leaving the door closed. The fire will run out of fuel and go out on its own. Opening the oven door puts you and the rest of your home at risk, as the fire can easily spread. Worried About Safety

A HIT IN MY HOME (Re: Kabobs for the Kids, Issue 155) I have to salute Rivka Weiss for the adorable idea of putting the kids’ sandwiches on a stick. My children enjoyed to assemble their meals with the spreads and vegetables of their choice, and then ate their fill with such geshmak. How true it is that kids will eat so much better when served in such a tempting manner. M.H.
YOU SPONSORED MY STAMPS This letter is addressed to the bachur who bought stamps in the post office on July 11 ahead of me. Being that you didn’t realize you had to press “end” when finishing your purchase on the self-service machine, the stamps that I purchased right after you were charged to your credit card. I left those stamps at the post office for you to pick up. Readers, when using the self-service machine, please make sure you’ve finalized your purchase and let the machine know you’re done for the day so that the next customer’s order shouldn’t be charged to your card. Stamp Buyer EDITOR’S BULLETIN: We’ve received numerous phone calls about an ad that readers thought had sheimos. As per the psak of The Monsey View’s rav, the ad does not qualify as sheimos. We appreciate your concern.

Dear Basya, Now that it’s summer, we often have a barbeque dinner. Do you have any tips or ideas for staying on track? I seem to overdo it every time we grill, despite my best intentions. Signed, Struggling in the Summer
Dear Struggling in the Summer,
CHAPTER 16
72 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 25, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Here are some tips for staying on track: 1. Plan ahead. Think about what will be served and decide in advance what you plan to have, then stick to your plan. This is almost like a menu in your mind. If you do not know exactly what will be served and do not feel comfortable asking the hostess, you can plan general categories such as a plate of vegetables, one lean protein or half of a higher-fat protein such as a hot dog or red meat. 2. Portion your plate. Your plate should have lots of salad or vegetables, one protein or a combination of two (half a burger and a small piece of grilled chicken) and a small amount of starch, such as rice or a potato. Try to avoid buns unless it is daytime and they are whole wheat. PAS now makes a delicious thin bun that is whole wheat and has only 100 calories. 3. Think time of day. Bread or buns are better eaten earlier in the day versus late night. If the barbeque is taking place in the afternoon, it’s okay to have one bun (see suggestion in above tip). However, if it’s in the evening, then stick to a potato or rice, or skip your starch. An alternative to a starch can be an ear of corn or some grilled butternut squash
since they both have a higher starch content than regular vegetables. 4. Great items to grill: Peppers, large mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes... These all taste great and look great on the grill. Make sure to include these on your menu. There is no need for oil. Use oil spray and lots of spices. 5. Don’t forget the drinks menu. Make delicious ice-cold lemonade using Fresca, Crystal Light or even just fresh lemon and sweetener. You can have some ice-cold diet soda in moderation as well. Remind yourself that you don’t need to eat everything you see; you will likely be grilling again soon and will have the chance to choose different options then! Good luck staying on track, Basya Please send in your nutrition question to info@nutritionbytanya.com, Attn: Basya. If being Overweight = unhealthy Then being skinny = healthy? ”You do exercise?” Yoely asked as I was coming out of a clients home.
To help you understand what I am talking about let's take a look at what it means to be healthy.
“Yes I do. How can I help you?”
Being healthy means you are performing at your best and are able to maintain this level of performance for the rest of your life.
“Look at me. Does it look like I need to exercise? I’m skinny.” With the hot sun beating down my back and heavy weights in hand- I didn't know what to say. Honestly, I was shocked and confused by the response. Over the span of the day I suddenly realized something - I realized why Yoely said what he said. For years you have been told that being overweight is a sign of being unhealthy and exercise is a great way to help you lose weight. This must also mean that being skinny is a sign of being healthy. This type of thinking is understandable but unfortunately wrong. Not only is it wrong, it is this type of thinking that has you in the sticky web of dieting your whole life. The issue isn't being overweight. The issue is the way you are viewing the problem. Being overweight is a symptom of living an unhealthy lifestyle. It isn't because you are overweight that you are unhealthy. This means that just because you are skinny doesn't mean you are healthy. The normal response that comes after I say this to someone is “I am healthy. The doctor ran my blood test and it came back fine. Why should I spend time exercising and watching what I eat?” The above mindset may seem like you are 100% right. However, when you truly understand what it means to be healthy only then can you will start to understand how this very mindset causes bigger problems.
This is very unique to every individual and their needs. Performing at your best means that you have the energy, stamina, cognitive function, patience for the things you need to do. If you are a business man/woman it mean you have the ability to perform what is required from you by your job and still have energy to enjoy your family time at the end of a stressful day.
As humans we have been put on this world to do our Hishtadloot. If you aren't doing your Hishtadloot when it comes to your health then you are not performing at your best. What does it mean to do your Hishtadloot regarding your health? It means giving your body the rest, the nutrition and the exercise it requires to function. The big issue I am seeing people have is wrapping their head around doing exercise. After all my Zaidey didn't do exercise. He lived to a ripe old age of 99! Why should I exercise?
You get the idea?
In the old days they didn't have the luxury of not being active. They didn't have the luxury of all these delicious high-caloric low-nutrition food like things. They didn't have the "luxury" of electronics that pulled at them to stay up into the late hours of the night.
The issue with this is that many of us think that we are performing at our best.
If you wanted to eat food you had to physically work to bring food to the table.
Don't make the mistake with getting by and surviving.
There weren't any Evergreens, Rockland Koshers, Wesley Koshers, Monsey Glatts or any o f the hundreds of supermarkets we have the luxury to choose from. Let alone restaurants! Part of living your life was being active.
If you are a stay at home mom/dad that you have the ability to do all that is required around the house and still have energy and patience to do what you want to do.
Even-though you might feel like you are doing fine on 4 hours of sleep, minimal food and 6 cups of coffee a day You are cutting yourself short at how well you could be performing. If you can work on improving your sleeping, eating and activity habits you may find that things that took you 2 hours to do now take you 30 minutes. You will find that you have more patience and energy to enjoy the things you want to do. Even after a long days work. But the question remains. How do you know? How do you know what performing at your best looks like? The correct answer is you don't know what your best looks like.
Now that we lead extremely inactive, unhealthy lifestyles (only 3% of Americans lead healthy lifestyle) you need to make a much stronger conscious decision to take care of your health. If you don't, there is a very high chance that issues will arise in the near future. If that is no concern to you then continue doing what you are doing. If you are the type of person that is always looking to improve your life. Always looking to become the best version one yourself - then I would love to show you how the Smith System can help you achieve the goals you are dreaming to achieve. 32 Hi, my name is Shmuly* S. I am 7 years old. If you would see me now you’d never believe that only two years ago my face was completely contorted due to a horrific burn. When a hot water urn fell on me and poured scalding water all over my body I was severely burnt. B’chasdei Hashem with a lot of nissim, multiple surgeries and half a year later I was completely healed. My face had no scarring, Baruch Hashem!! However, the doctors cautioned that if I’d ever be sunburned the burns would never fade. Since I don’t want discoloration on my now perfect face, I stay out of the sun as much as possible. What I dream of having is a covered area on my porch so that I could run and play in the outdoors just like everybody else. Oh, what fun it would be if I could ride my bike, play with the water table, play ball and have my lunch on the porch; without wearing my hat, putting on my creams and limiting my time in the yummy outdoors. All I want is to be like everybody else, without the fear of having my face discolored and my scars peeling and bleeding, as it usually does when I’m in the sun. When my mother showed me the contest and explained what this could mean for me I jumped for joy: Can my dream really come true??

Serving its multiple purposes It acts as all the rooms that we desired, When the laundry room is full enough This one holds our swimming stuff An oversized laundry room – we finally acquired. Toys throughout the porch is quite common It’s a playroom in rain or sleet, And you can surely bet It’s used as a dinette Three outdoor meals, the kids love to eat. A comfortable livingroom to relax No sun shining in the face, And without a proper shed We store our bikes here instead It seems to be the perfect place. Try hosting a party outdoors Nature offers a breathtaking scene, It adds to the décor It becomes a room we adore It makes for an atmosphere so peaceful and serene. Each time we enjoy our deck We marvel as we comprehend, Our awning roof Is our daily proof That an awning is all it takes to extend!!
82 I live in an apartment building where all the neighbors are like one big happy family. We are hard-working, simple people with growing families. Last year, before Succos we were talking about getting an awning. One neighbor suggested that we try the competitor because he offered a better price. But since my parents had used that company and regretted it daily, I knew that it would be a bad choice. My parents called several times for service but their calls were ignored. Succos came and their awning wasn’t working properly. I convinced all of my 5 neighbors to use TRI STATE AWNING and they are thanking me that they did. Your service was quick, courteous and the quality is not to be compared! As a loyal fan of your company I hope that you can reward me with the Instant Sukkah. I know that the quality and efficiency of the product will not disappoint.
251 When Am Yisroel left Egypt, With “clouds of glory” they were equipped. The clouds protected them like an ‘awning’ from cold, rain and heat, That's why in a Sukkah we sleep, drink and eat. The thought of building a shlock, I can just feel the hammer on my finger knock.. Ouch! The heavy panels, where will I store, Schlepping is not for me, cause energy I have no more. No better way to celebrate, Only with a “Roll-up awning and instant Sukkah from Tri State”!!!

The Yesod V'shorash Hu'avodah (shaar 11, perek 12) writes that one is mekayeim a mitzvas asei every second he or she sits in the sukkah. When calculated, that equals about 604,800 mitzvas asei per person each year sukkos. Multiply that by how many people will be sitting in our sukkah per year and that by how many years of use we can have of your sukkah. That's close to a billion mitzvahs asei.... Being that we currently do not own a sukkah, by giving us the instant sukkah you will have a zechus in all these mitzvos for as long as the sukkah lasts! ב
The house was claustrophobic Our rooms were feeling tight, An extension was in need It was our only lead But relief was nowhere in sight.

Parshas Va’eschanan
By: Malka Schneps
THE BEGINNING OF Parshas Va’eschanan finds the Jewish people preparing to enter Eretz Yisroel at long last — all except for Moshe Rabbeinu, who is barred entry. Moshe Rabbeinu gathers the people together and he speaks to them for 37 days, preparing them to enter the Eretz Hakodesh. The parsha begins in the midst of that speech, with Moshe Rabbeinu telling the Bnei Yisroel how he had entreated Hashem to allow him to enter Eretz Yisroel: “Va’eschanan… — I entreated Hashem at that time, saying, ‘O Hashem, G-d… let me cross over and see the good land that is on the other side of the Yardein, this good mountain and the Levanon.’… But Hashem was angry with me because of you, and He did not listen to me, and Hashem said to me, ‘Rav lecha — It is enough for you; speak to Me no more regarding this matter.’” (Devarim 3:23–25) Why did Hashem punish Moshe Rabbeinu by not permitting him to enter the land? Rashi, commenting on the Gemara (Sotah 13a), explains that Hashem holds tzaddikim to a higher standard. Hashem is stricter with tzaddikim, judging them to within a “hairsbreadth” (Yevamos 121b). Why is Hashem so strict with tzaddikim? On the one hand, it seems understandable to expect more from those who are capable of more, but on the other hand, do we not all share the same Torah? Are the standards different for different people? The Be’er Mayim Chayim addresses this question, and the answer applies to and will surely inspire all of us. The Be’er Mayim Chayim explains as follows: There are four levels in the Pardes HaTorah: pshat, remez, drush and sod. Pshat refers to the simple, literal meaning of the words. Remez refers to the hinted meanings, such as with gematria. Drush refers to deeper meaning in the text, and sod refers to the Kabbalistic secrets of the Torah. These four correspond to the four worlds: atzilus, briyah, yetzirah and asiyah. Pshat corresponds to this lower world of asiyah, remez to briyah, and so on. Likewise, the nefesh, ruach, neshamah and “neshamah of the neshamah” correspond to the four worlds. Nefesh corresponds to the olam asiyah, ruach to briyah and so on.
78 / THE MONSEY VIEW
There are some people whose nefesh, ruach, and neshamah come from the highest world, the olam atzilus, whereas other people’s souls emanate from the briyah and yet others from asiyah. The tachlis for each person is to bring up his nefesh to the place from where it was taken. This is where the correspondence comes into play. A person whose nefesh emanates from the olam asiyah has to be careful to fulfill the pshat, while a person whose nefesh comes from yetzirah has to be careful with everything that comes out from the remez haTorah. If not, his nefesh will remain without a tikkun and will have to be purified in the Next World, which is more painful than in This World, until its light will be able to shine enough to bring it back to its original level. This brings us the Be’er Mayim Chayim’s answer to the question of why tzaddikim are held to such a high level of accountability. A person whose neshamah comes from the highest world is responsible to keep the Torah according to the level of sod, the secrets of the Torah. Thus, a person whose nefesh is from a really high place has to do lifnim meshuras hadin, because his neshamah will only get its tikkun from that. What does this mean for the average person? The Be’er Mayim Chayim explains it. It says in Mishlei (2:20), “…L’maan teilech... — …in order that you go in good ways and keep the paths of the tzaddikim.” The Torah is telling everybody to follow the ways of tzaddikim, even though our neshamos may emanate from lower worlds than that of tzaddikim. The Be’er Mayim Chayim answers that even for the lowest among us, it’s a mitzvah to fulfill all the mitzvos of the Torah with all his strength from remez to drush to sodei HaTorah. He cites the Rambam that every person could become as great as Moshe Rabbeinu if he works hard enough (Hilchos Teshuvah, Perek 5 Halacha 2). In addition, if a person does more that is shayach to the avodah of his neshamah that is within him, his s’char will reflect that. Therefore, Hashem tells everyone to follow even in the ways of the tzaddikim. May we all strive to ever higher levels in our avodas Hashem.

Historic South Monsey Tank to Get Facelift as Part of Community Service Project IT IS A FAMILIAR SIGHT to anyone driving up Saddle River Road toward Main Monsey: an M60A3 Patton tank that has been stationed outside the Fred Eller American Legion Post for the last 22 years. However, with the help of a West Nyack teenager, that roadside landmark will soon be looking as good as new. Denis Muller, a member of Boys Scouts of America, has taken on the large-scale community service project of repainting the local American Legion Post’s tank, located in South Monsey, as an expression of appreciation to veterans of the United States Army. The project will require Muller to power wash and scrape all the old paint off the tank, before priming its surface and applying a new coat of olive green paint. Muller plans on using both paint brushes and an airless sprayer to cover the tank. He estimates that he will need 10 gallons of primer and anywhere from 15 to 20 gallons of paint, with the total cost for the entire project amounting to $2,000. Muller said that he is looking forward to working with veterans as he restores Monsey’s iconic tank to its former glory. “The goal of this project is to make their tank look like new and they will be proud to show it off again,”
said Muller. The tank was demilitarized in 1996 by the United States Army Combined Support Maintenance Shop in Camp Smith, New York, and came from Annville, Pennsylvania. It was delivered to Monsey on May 13, 1996, and was escorted from the New York State border to its current home by the Town of Ramapo Police Department.
Nyack’s Memorial Park Implements Permit Requirement to Prevent Overcrowding A VISIT BY A MONSEY girls camp to a newly opened splash pad in Nyack has prompted the village board to require permits for all groups that hope to visit the park. The Journal News reported that Nyack residents were disturbed when three busloads of girls from a Monsey day camp paid a visit to Memorial Park during the first week in July. Onlookers complained that the volume of campers was so large that Nyack residents were unable to enjoy the new sprinkler park, which was funded by a grant from the New York Bridge Authority’s Community Benefits Program in order to benefit village children. Hoping to prevent similar recurrences, Nyack officials voted unanimously to require all businesses,
82 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 25, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
including camps, to apply for a permit before visiting Memorial Park, which in addition to the splash pad, also features a newly redone playground. The permit process would require any groups requesting approval for a park visit to furnish proof of liability insurance and would also be an opportunity to make guests aware of all park rules in advance of the visit. Nyack Mayor Don Hammond said that only three permits have been requested so far. “We don’t want to hold people up from using the park,” Hammond said. “As we’re beginning to implement this, we’re finding things we need to work through.”

Rich Chocolate and Vanilla Mousse By: Ruchi from @Cookstas This dessert combines two of my favorite flavors: chocolate and peanut butter. Paired together in a crunchy layer, topped with smooth chocolate mousse and a rich vanilla topping, it is the ultimate treat for all.
CRUNCH 12 chocolate sandwich cookies 2–3 heaping T. peanut butter
VANILLA MOUSSE 1 whip (8 oz.) 1–2 T. confectioner's sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract
CHOCOLATE MOUSSE 1 whip (8 oz.) ½ cup praline paste 4 oz. high-quality dark chocolate (the higher the percentage of cacao, the better)
TIP: These mousse cups freeze really well when stored in an airtight container. Prepare a batch in advance, and you'll have it on hand for all occasions.
CRUNCH DIRECTIONS 1. In a food processor, pulse the cookies until crumbly. Add the peanut butter and pulse until combined.
VANILLA MOUSSE DIRECTIONS 1. In an electric mixer with the whisk attachment, beat the whip until stiff peaks form. 2. Add confectioner's sugar and vanilla extract and beat another 5 seconds until incorporated. 3. Attach a Wilton 1M tip to a piping bag, or slip it through the inside of a gallon-size resealable bag. Add the mousse to the bag and seal.
CHOCOLATE MOUSSE DIRECTIONS 1. In an electric mixer with the whisk attachment, beat the whip until stiff peaks form. 2. In a separate bowl, melt the chocolate and praline paste in the microwave until smooth. Add to the whip and beat 5 seconds more until incorporated. 3. Attach a Wilton 1M tip to a piping bag, or slip it through the inside of a gallon-size resealable bag. Add the mousse to the bag and seal.
ASSEMBLY 1. Fill individual trifle cups or mini Mason jars about a third full with a layer of crunch. 2. Pipe the chocolate mousse into the cups, starting from the outermost part and working your way inward and upward. 3. Repeat with the vanilla mousse.

Strawberry-Topped Viennese Mousse Pie By: Goldie Rosner The combination of flavors and textures makes this a winner of a dessert — and it’s a beauty, too.
LAYERS 1 AND 2
LAYERS 1 AND 2 DIRECTIONS
1½ sticks margarine
1. Preheat oven to 325°.
10 eggs, separated
2. In a food processor or blender, crush the Viennese crunch. Set aside.
¾ cup sugar ¾ cup sugar (This is not a mistake. You need ¾ cup sugar twice in this recipe.) ¾ lb. Viennese crunch 1½ bars Noblesse chocolate (Schmerling’s chocolate bar with a picture of a horse on the box — 55% cocoa)
3. In double boiler, melt the margarine, chocolate and ¾ cup sugar. Set aside. 4. In an electric mixer, beat the egg whites with ¾ cup sugar until a stiff snow forms. Slowly fold in the yolks, the contents of the double boiler and the Viennese crunch. 5. Pour half of the batter into a lined 10x16 baking pan, and bake for 35 minutes. Put the rest of the batter into the fridge. (Use a 10x16 pan that has straight edges rather than one that is scalloped.) 6. After the cake is well cooled, spread the mousse from the fridge over it. Freeze.
LAYER 3 1½ cartons whipped topping (defrosted for 15–20 minutes) ¾ carton of instant vanilla pudding
LAYER 3 DIRECTIONS 1. In an electric mixer, beat the whip until stiff peaks form. Then add the pudding and mix till combined. 2. Spread mixture on top of first two layers. 3. Freeze.
LAYER 4 DIRECTIONS
LAYER 4 1½ bags frozen strawberries (defrosted for 15–20 minutes), only slightly defrosted (for about 15–20 minutes) ¾ cup sugar
1. Dissolve the cornstarch in the cold water. Set aside. 2. Blend the strawberries. 3. Add the sugar, vanilla and dissolved cornstarch to the strawberries. 4. Spread mixture over first three layers. 5. Freeze
1½ tsp. vanilla sugar 3 T. cornstarch ⅓ cup cold water

TIP: Moisten the baking pan with a bit of water before lining it with parchment paper. This will prevent the paper from sliding around when pouring in the batter.

YERUSHALAYIM IN ALL ITS GLORY! The Beis Hamikdash standing tall and splendid, a home for the Shechinah once again. The avodah, korbanos, an end to all personal and communal tzaros. Kohanim, Leviim, Yidden of all stripes and from all walks of life converging on our holy city. The shofar of Moshiach heralding the final Geulah. We all dream of it. It was the dream and vision of early Ashkenazic settlers in Yerushalayim, too. The journey to Eretz Yisroel and dwelling in the land was fraught with hardship. It meant poverty, disease and danger. It meant hunger, fear and privation. These first arrivals to the city did not come for material pleasures. With mesiras nefesh, they were driven by a singular goal: to inhabit Eretz Yisroel, which they had confidence would hasten the coming of Moshiach. So intense was the yearning of these settlers during the period referred to as the “Old Yishuv,” that they were ready to face all difficulties and viewed them as part of the privilege of living and serving Hashem in His Chosen Land, while bringing the Geulah closer.
OTTOMAN RULE The Ottoman Turks conquered Eretz Yisroel in 1516. The sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, was kind to the Jews, liberally allowing them entry and providing positive legal standing and protection. In 1537, he rebuilt the Chomah of Yerusha-
layim. It was a golden era for Yidden in Eretz Yisroel. Both Sephardim and Ashkenazim arrived in droves, and a dynamic Torah society was established.
RAV YEHUDA HACHASSID and the CHURVAH SHUL After leaving Poland, Rav Yehuda Hachassid, zt”l, arrived in Yerushalayim in 1700 along with roughly 800 followers. He envisioned building what would later be known as Churvas Rav Yehuda Hachassid, which he intended to use as a center for Torah and Yiddishkeit. He purchased land immediately upon his arrival, but sadly, a few days later, he passed away. The venture went bankrupt and the shul could not be completed. The local Arabs involved, angered that the balance remained unpaid, banned all Ashkenazim from living in the city, and an interlude of many years with barely an Ashkenazic presence in Yerushalayim ensued. The dispute over the Churvah Shul was settled after many years, when the Yidden took the issue to Turkish court, claiming that since more than 150 years had passed, the balance had no credence or consequence (Turkish law dictated that a debt expires after a certain number of years). Turkish court ruled in their favor, and the Yidden were able to rebuild the Churvah Shul in the 1860s after years of its standing incomplete.

THE OLD YISHUV It was during this time of Ottoman rule over Eretz Yisroel that the first wave of chassidic and Lithuanian settlers arrived from Europe. The Baal Shem Tov’s brother-inlaw, Rav Gershon Kitover, zt”l, came in 1746. Reb Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, zt”l, Rav Avraham Kalisker, zt”l, and some talmidim of the Mezeritcher Maggid, zt”l, a primary talmid of the Baal Shem Tov, were also among the first settlers. They settled in Tiveria in the 1780s. The Vilna Gaon had a passionate aspiration to inhabit the land of Eretz Yisroel. He believed that if Yidden would live in Yerushalayim, it would inspire the arrival of Moshiach. He himself had plans to move to Yerushalayim, but they never materialized. Several versions are recounted describing why his plans fell through. Regardless, he had planted this longing within the minds and hearts of his talmidim. With a passionate desire to help further their rebbe’s dream, numerous students, referred to as Talmidei HaGra, or the Perushim, actualized the vision by traveling to Eretz Yisroel after the Gaon’s passing. At first, a small group of Talmidei HaGra left for Eretz Yisroel in 1808, wanting to prepare the groundwork for more of their peers to come and settle. Thinking that it would be easiest to settle in Tiveria, where there were already some Ashkenazic Yidden, they made it their destination. After a while, however, they found it difficult to live side by side with the chassidim whose minhagim and lifestyle were so different, and they decided to move to Tzfas. In Tzfas, the Perushim set up a flourishing Ashkenazic kehillah. This set the path for more Talmidei

HaGra to follow suit. One such talmid was Reb Yitzchok Chaslavisher, zt”l, the forebear of the famous Cheshin family of Yerushalayim. Prior to leaving Europe Reb Yitzchok learned in the yeshivah of Volozhin, where he was a beloved talmid of Rav Chaim Volozhiner, zt”l. In Volozhin, Torah was learned round the clock,
dressed similarly to the Arabs, were not banned from the city. In fact, a Sephardi community, including gedolim such as the Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh and the Chida, was already present in the Old City. Thus, with no other way in, the Talmidei HaGra dressed in Sephardic garb before entering the city, and man-
24 hours a day, as Rav Chaim believed there could be no kiyum ha’olam otherwise. However, so dear was the value of yishuv Eretz Yisroel to Rav Chaim, that contrary to his style, he instructed all the bochurim to close their Gemaras and accompany Reb Yitzchok until the borders of the city! In the year 1830, the infamous earthquake of Tzfas shattered the Ashkenazic presence in the city. Many lives were lost, and a large percentage of the community, afraid to continue living in Tzfas, left for Yerushalayim. (The Chasam Sofer wrote at the time that the earthquake came as the hakpadah of Yerushalayim, as Yidden were arriving in Eretz Yisroel and choosing not to live within her walls.) Relocating wasn’t simple. The local Arabs, still incensed at the Ashkenazim at large, refused to allow Ashkenazim into Yerushalayim. Sephardim, on the other hand, who
aged to smuggle themselves past the unsuspecting Arabs, who did not recognize their true Ashkenazic identity. And so, the Old Yishuv flourished.
EXPANSION OUTSIDE THE CITY’S WALLS At first, the Yidden lived within the walls of the Old City, but the Talmidei HaGra encouraged purchasing land from the gentiles. This would give Yidden the chance to own a chelek in Eretz Yisroel. The more land owned by Yidden, the more mitzvos hateluyos ba’aretz could be kept. The Yidden would be able to keep shemittah, maaser, orlah and a host of other commandments exclusive to life in the Holy Land. Certainly this would hasten the Geulah.
This meant moving outside the chomah of the Old City. It was not a simple plan. They were up against extreme Arab resistance, and when the first neighborhood beyond the Old City was built, no one was ready to make the move. It was simply too dangerous. Finally, two or three brave families relocated, and the neighborhood was officially opened. Tragically, misfortune struck when angry Arabs attacked the courageous pioneers in the middle of the first or second night, taking the lives of a few Yidden. Undeterred, the Yidden remained, but positioned a shomer to guard the neighborhood. Slowly, the community grew, and with time, additional neighborhoods were built. Nachalas Shivah, Meah Shearim, Beis Yisrael and Shaarei Chesed were among the first few. The famous English philanthropist, Sir Moses Montefiore, was heavily involved in the construction of these new neighborhoods. In fact many of these areas, including Zichron Moshe, Yemin Moshe and Kiryas Moshe, carry his name. The mitzvah of owning land in Eretz Yisroel was so great that purchasing some of it was even deemed permissible to do on Shabbos. In fact, Neve She’anan, one of the pioneer neighborhoods, was purchased on Shabbos. Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zt”l, accompanied Reb Moshe Aharon Galunt, z”l, and his daughter, Chana Minzberg, a young girl at the time, to purchase the land on a Friday night. The money was in Chana’s pocket. The Arab who was selling the land took the money out of her pocket and wrote up a contract of sale.

INTERVENTION FROM CHUTZ L’ARETZ Funds for construction came primarily from European donors who considered it an honor and a privilege to have a part in yishuv Eretz Yisroel. The houses built during that period are all of similar style and have one thing in common: a stone on the front of the

building with the name of the donor or donors etched upon it. A prominent talmid of the Gra, the Chayei Adam, had a great desire to be oleh to Eretz Yisroel. When he realized that his dream was not materializing, he became a “shadar,” or a shelicha d’rabbana, going around the city of Vilna where he lived and collecting money with which land was purchased and buildings erected in Eretz Yisroel. The notion of kollelim was initiated as well. This meant that each community in Europe would set
was literally a life-saving arrangement. There were no Jewish businesses and no income for the poor Yerushalmi residents. People could starve of hunger and deprivation. Illnesses and epidemics were common. The threat of death was so real that each day of survival was considered a miracle. The walls of their small homes were saturated with passion and fervor, sincere emunah, bitachon and toil in Torah, the quality of which could certainly be attributed to their triumphing over the squalor conditions. Bit by bit, with great mesiras nefesh, they established strong foundations for the magnificent palace known as the city of Yerushalayim.

up a fund, where people donated money for the people of Eretz Yisroel. This included Kollel Shomrei Hachomos, Kollel Chibas Yerushalayim, as well as the Polin, Vohlin and Lithuanian kollelim, among others. The money sent by the kollelim was practically the only means of support from which the residents of Yerushalayim lived. It

wanted to hear their sweet voices calling back, an indication that they were still alive! With no materialistic pleasure or gratification, and constant fear of the neighboring Arabs, who’d rob and kill at leisure, life left its rigorous mark on the idealistic residents. Yet they considered themselves fortunate and felt it a true zechus to be able to live in the Holy
The streets were filled with elevated “Yerushalayim-shel-Maaleh’dige Yidden,” some simpler, some more learned; some famous, and some who led more private lives. Standing out for their distinction in Torah learning and closeness with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, were many gedolei olam. The first official Ashkenazi Rav of Yerushalayim was Rav Shmuel Salant, zt”l. With his typical humility, Rav Shmuel did not fully accept the role upon himself until a while after his official appointment as rav. Rav Salant was zocheh to arichas yamim and lived into his nineties, shouldering the rabbanus for nearly seventy years. During this time, Yerushalayim saw exponential growth, multiplying five times in size. As Rav Shmuel aged, Rav Eliyahu David Rabinowitz-Teumim, zt”l, better known as the Aderes, was lined up to become the next rav of Yerushalayim. However, he passed away still during the lifetime of Rav Salant. Among the Torah scholars re-

MINHAGEI YERUSHALAYIM Most minhagim that are referred to as “minhag Yerushalayim” stem from the Perushim. Many were instituted during this time period, under the Torah leadership of Rav Shmuel Salant, Rav Yehoshua Leib Diskin and Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld.

Music at Chasunahs Once, a cholera epidemic broke out in Yerushalayim, claiming many lives including pious talmidei chachamim such as Rav Nachum Shadiker and Rav Moshe Leib Kutner. With the epidemic still raging, another calamity plagued Eretz Yisroel: Swarms of locusts destroyed acres upon acres of crops. Distraught, Rav Meir Auerbach turned to a Sephardic mekubal, Rav Yedidya Abulafia, zt”l, for guidance. Rav Abulafia stated that he was mekabel from his rebbe that any hardship that befalls the Yidden of Yerushalayim can be attributed to a lack of proper mourning for the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash. Rav Meir consulted with Rav Shmuel Salant and publicized a yom tefillah at the Kosel Hamaaravi. After everyone davened for an end to the terrible plagues, Rav Meir announced that from that point on, no musical instruments would be played at weddings in Yerushalayim. As soon as this new restriction was declared, the cholera stopped and the locusts flew away. At first, there was confusion as to whether the ban on instruments applied in the Old City alone, or if it should be upheld in the outlying neighborhoods built outside the Old City. It was once brought to
the attention of Rav Yehoshua Leib Diskin that music was playing at a wedding in one of the newer neighborhoods, and Rav Diskin sent one of his disciples to instruct the music to stop. Out of deference to the Rav, the band immediately stopped playing, and it thus became accepted that the decree applied to the surrounding areas of Yerushalayim as well. More recently, some have been matir neder not playing music at weddings in outlying areas. However, true Yerushalmi tradition is still upheld for the most part. Reb Nechemia Cheshin, a chashuve Yerushalmi Yid, was at the sheva brachos of a family member where a friend had arranged music, and he refused to allow the music in Yerushalayim even at a sheva brachos!
Immediate Burial In Yerushalayim, it is customary to bury a niftar immediately and not wait even overnight. One Motzei Shabbos, after a heavy snow fell over Yerushalayim, members of the chevrah kaddisha were summoned to the home of a niftar. They were in a quandary. How were they to carry out a burial under such conditions? There were no cars; the niftar needed to be carried by foot, and it seemed impossible. One of the members ran
over to Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld to ask what to do. Rav Yosef Chaim responded unequivocally, “Yes! The niftar must be buried tonight, without delay!” Rav Yosef Chaim then gave them bottles of whiskey to drink so they could keep warm along the way and stationed himself outside, near the location of where the Toldos Aharon shul is today, waiting for their return. When the chevrah kaddisha finally arrived back close to dawn, one of them was drunk from having had so much whiskey. They placed the inebriated man on a bed and carried him this way to the Varsha Heiser, where he lived. There, Rav Yosef Chaim and the chevrah kaddisha began a lively rikkud, dancing to a song that went something like this, “Nisht genaart, nur gelacht, veil tzvei mul lebt men nisht.” They were so glad to have been able to fulfill the custom of not allowing a niftar to remain unburied overnight in Yerushalayim.
Kabbalas Shabbos Another well-known minhag in Yerushalayim that was instituted during this time period is the welcoming of Shabbos forty minutes before the shkiah. Meant to prevent chillul Shabbos, it also serves as tosfos Shabbos, the mitzvah of adding on time to the predestined length of Shabbos.
Yerushalmi Levush The famous golden caftan traditionally worn by Yerushalmim on Shabbos has its origins in the Middle Eastern garments that allowed Ashkenazim inconspicuous entry to Yerushalayim in the 1830s. However, there are a couple of differences between the cloaks worn by the Arabs and Sephardim and the style used by Yerushalmim. The pattern follows specific kavanos, introduced by Reb Mendel Biderman of Lelov, zt”l.
It is stitched out of 26 pieces, symbolic of the Shem Havaya. The caftan closes right over left, and the neckline is not closed like the Arab version. On the body of the garment, the thin stripes are vertical, but on the arms, the stripes run across horizontally. This is meant to remind the wearer of tefillin, which are not donned on Shabbos. There is also a V-shaped notch in the cuff that, when meeting with the seam near it, forms a shin, referencing Hashem’s Name; two parallel swatches of material at the underarm that symbolize the Luchos Habris; and the finely embroidered collar that resembles the atarah of a tallis. The Yerushalmi caftan is not manufactured by a company, but is typically sewn by Yerushalmi seamstresses or tailors, home-style. These women and men weave the many kavanos into the details of each garment as they sew.

siding in Yerushalayim were Rav Yeshaya Bardaki, zt”l, Rav Moshe Leib Kutner, zt”l, and Rav Nachum Shadiker, zt”l. Another well-known gadol was Rav Meir Auerbach, zt”l, who, with the backing of Rav Shmuel Salant, was recognized by all gedolei Torah as a leader and Torah authority. Rav Yehoshua Leib Diskin of Brisk, zt”l, arrived to Yerushalayim in 1877 and was also a rav in the city, but never filled the official position of Chief Rabbi. Still, Reb Yehoshua Leib was accepted and respected universally by the Torah-true com-

munity. His stance on any issue of Torah observance, which was typically strong and vehement, was considered final and was obeyed by all. Rav Salant and Rav Diskin shared a warm relationship and worked closely together. Rav Shmuel, a man of peace, always followed Rav Yehoshua Leib’s ruling regardless of his agreement with the psak. In fact, with Rav Shmuel Salant’s prodding, Reb Yehoshua Leib even led his own beis din. Rav Shmuel Salant was succeeded by Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zt”l.
POLITICAL CHANGES In the mid-1800s, Yerushalayim paradoxically experienced much growth as conditions concurrently worsened. Budding new neighborhoods sprouted and expanded. Houses, schools and roads were developed. Two hospitals, Bikur Cholim and Misgav Ladach, were founded. The Old City progressed as well, with more yeshivos and shuls being established. Talmud Torah Eitz Chaim was originally founded within the Old City walls for the Ashkenazic community by Rav Shmuel Salant, in 1841. Yet Yidden were suffering under the corrupt and harsh rule of the Turks, whose empire was in a state of decline. The Turks persecuted the Yidden with acts of oppression and cruelty, and the Yidden no longer felt protected by the law. However, despite the extreme living conditions, fresh immigrants continued to arrive. By 1845, there were 3,000 Jewish families living in Yerushalayim. In 1850, Rav Moshe Biderman of Lelov, zt”l, arrived to Yerushalayim from Poland, leaving his flourishing chassidus and chassidim behind. He desperately wished to daven at the Kosel, which was believed to be the final straw in the bringing of Moshiach. Shortly after he arrived, though, he collapsed. For 72 days, he lay in bed, sick. On his final day, he was taken to the Kosel, but as they approached the site, Arabs pelted them with stones. He was not successful at reaching the Kosel. He was buried on Har Hazeisim, near Yad Avshalom and the Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh. Sadly, there is no zecher of his kever today as it was destroyed by the Jordanians years later. Soon, Torah-true Yidden were not alone in their desire to inhabit the Holy Land. Sadly, the winds of the Haskalah movement that raged in Europe reached the shores of Eretz Yisroel. The initial “enlightened” Yidden who arrived seemed
pious and frum, and it took the discerning perception of the Yerushalmi gedolim to differentiate between them. The rabbanim of Yerushalayim faced the difficult task of keeping the fortress of ehrliche Yiddishkeit intact. In 1878, the Turkish authorities permitted the Ashkenazi community to slaughter cattle for the first time. Until this point, only the Sephardi community, under supervision of Chacham Bashi, had the right to do so. Each kollel within the Ashkenazic community appointed its own shochtim and supervisors — some of whom were not ehrlich. This led to numerous breaches in halacha. Rav Shmuel Salant tasked Rav Yehoshua Leib Diskin with improving the situation. Rav Diskin founded the Shechitah Council of Ashkenazi Chassidish and non-Chassidish Communities, with Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld its appointed leader. This centralization, specifically under such rigid leadership, received the unanimous cooperation of the community at large, and the issues were resolved.
THE COURTYARD NEIGHBORHOODS Within the Jewish areas, little courtyard neighborhoods, sponsored by corresponding communities in Europe, were established. One of the first ones was founded by Reb Hershel Broida and was known as “Batei Broida.” A row of houses was built, with large balconies in the front. Each house had two floors, with steps leading up to them erected outside. There was no running water or bathrooms. The homes were small, and each family was assigned two rooms. Of Lithuanian descent, Reb Broida only allowed Litvishe families, referred to as Perushim, to live in his mini community. A Polish chassid by the name of Reb Mendel Rand visited the development. As he was being shown around, he was told that no chassid was allowed to live there as it was created for Litvishe Perushim only. Hearing this, Reb Mendel decided he too would build a mini com-

munity — for chassidim only. A narrow street divided the two developments. The houses that Reb Mendel Rand built were slightly larger than the Batei Broida; each home was allotted three rooms. The projects were adorned with impressive batei midrashim that can still be visited today. Parallel developments, such as Batei Varsha and Batei Ungarin, among numerous others, were sponsored and built following a similar style. Today, a system is in place for these apartments, which belong to the hekdesh of the kehillos and kollelim they correspond with, as to who gets the privilege of living in them. The apartments “belong” to the family that lives in it, for as long as the person is alive. When a resident passes away, the apartment returns to hekdesh and is conferred to another family for life.

sel Hamaaravi and the Makom Hamikdash, the tzaar haShechinah was an almost tangible reality for old-time Yerushalmim. During the Three Weeks, the sadness and aching intensified. The people spoke about and cried over the Churban constantly. In every shul, Tikkun Chatzos was recited daily. Churban Hamikdash was a reality that everyone lived with. Even in more recent genera-
tions, the aveilus was more aptly felt in Yerushalayim. There was an interesting episode with Reb Hershel Kretchnever, zt”l, who passed away just over a decade ago. He approached a chassid, who was a maggid shiur in his yeshivah, and said that he wanted to be matir neder, but he was reluctant to share his problem. All his years, from Shivah Asar B’Tammuz until Tisha B’Av, he explained, he would not lie down in his bed, but slept on the floor. Now, as he aged, he found it impossible to lift himself off the ground when he awoke. The Rebbe had no choice but to relieve himself of the neder. It is our deepest yearning that Yerushalayim’s unique level of mourning, of aching and of loss, be deemed unnecessary with the coming of Moshiach, when we will be zoche to join our brethren in Yerushalayim Ir Hakodesh.

Come! Let’s take a tour around the Old City walls. The chomah that currently surrounds the Old City was rebuilt in 1537 by the Ottoman Turks who ruled the land at the time. It stretches for 2.8 miles, is between 16 and 49 feet tall, and a number of fortresses were built on top to protect those inside the city. There are eight gates allowing entrance to the Old City. Some older, some newer, all stand tall and proud, welcoming the masses to this holiest of sites.

SHAAR HARACHAMIM Starting at the east side, closest to the Har HaBayis, we stop at SHAAR HARACHAMIM. This entrance is the oldest of them all and existed during the time of the Beis Hamikdash. It has since been rebuilt by the Turks. Known as Golden Gate by the Christians, this gate is sealed, with stones filling in its entranceway. During the rule of the Ottoman Turks, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent heard the Yidden recount that the Shechinah left the Har HaBayis for galus through this gate. He was also told that Moshiach will enter through

this gate because of its proximity to the Har HaBayis. To preclude Moshiach’s entry, he therefore decided to close it up with stones. In addition, the Sultan set up a cemetery at the site, wanting to prevent Moshiach, who will originate from Kohanim, from passing. To reach this shaar from the chatzer of the Beis Hamikdash, one needed to go down a few steps. The gate had two entrances: Shaar Harachamim on the southern side and Shaar Hateshuvah on the northern side.

SHAAR HA’ARAYOS Moving southward, we find SHAAR HA’ARAYOS, or the Lions’ Gate. This opening is timeworn as well, having been used by the Yidden when they came to be oleh regel. This gate is the closest to the site of the Beis Hamikdash. When the Yidden were oleh regel, they used to pass through this shaar on their way to the Beis Hamikdash. For this reason, this gate is also known as Shaar Hashevatim. The name Shaar Ha’arayos was given because of the two lions that are engraved on either side of the gate. It is an impressive-looking gate, with fortress-like stones built on top.

SHAAR HA’ASHPOS Rounding the bend toward the left is SHAAR HA’ASHPOS, also known as the Dung Gate. Named for the garbage dump that existed at the site approximately 400 years ago, this shaar tells a unique story. At the time, heaps of garbage, stones and sand layered the ground, concealing the area. When Yidden came to daven at the Kosel, they looked for it but could not find it. Finally, under Ottoman rule, the waste was removed, and the Kosel was uncovered once again. What simchah it brought to the Yidden who were able to daven at the Makom Hamikdash once again!

THE STORY BEHIND SHAAR HA’ASHPOS When Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent of Turkey captured Yerushalayim, he set up his personal residence not far from the Kosel Hamaaravi. One morning, as the sultan sat near his window, attempting to take in some fresh Yerushalmi air, he noticed an old, bentover woman who must have been at least 90 years of age, lugging a sack of garbage and casting it near his palace. The Sultan was upset. “How dare this little old woman throw garbage here?” he called out angrily. He instructed his servants to bring the woman to him. When the woman arrived, the sultan asked, “Of which nationality are you?” “I am Roman, your Honor,” the old woman replied, quivering in fear. “Where do you live?” the sultan continued. “In Beis Lechem. A distance of two days away, your Honor.” Truly amazed, the sultan questioned, “And why did you come all the way here to dispose of your garbage?!” The woman replied that the Roman officials obliged the residents to bring their garbage twice a week, specifically to this spot. “In this place, many years ago,” she said, “stood the Jewish Beis Hamikdash. Since the Romans were not successful at destroying it until its very foundation, they decreed that all people bring their garbage here. This way, the garbage would cover the area, and the memory of this holy place would be completely forgotten.” “Remain here while I investigate the truth behind your words,” the sultan replied. The sultan sent some servants to stand beside the garbage pile and question those bringing their trash. Sure enough, a number of people shared similar responses that corroborated the old lady’s story. The sultan pulled out a couple of pouches filled with coins, along with a basket and a
rake. An announcement proclaimed, “Whoever wants to fulfill the sultan’s wishes can observe his actions and follow suit.” Then the sultan himself scattered the coins from the pouches over the garbage heap. Many people came to watch. Seeing that the sultan alone was standing with a rake and basket in hand, they ran to get rakes and baskets too. The townspeople began to dig through the giant mountain of trash, removing sack after sack, collecting coins all the while. No one was
ashamed to do the dirty work — even the sultan was on the scene! For thirty days the people scurried about, clearing the piles of garbage in search of their loot. Finally, on the thirtieth day, the Kosel was uncovered. The sultan then declared that no one was to bring garbage to the holy site. There were those who attempted to defy the new law, but the sultan remained firm on his premise and meted out sharp penalties, until the dumping of garbage stopped completely.

SHAAR TZION Continuing further west, we find SHAAR TZION, called this way because of its proximity to the fortress named Tzion. During the time of Dovid Hamelech, Yerushalayim was a small city, inhabited by the Yevusim. The Yiddishe army, under Dovid Hamelech’s command, fought

a difficult war against the Yevusim. With much siyata d’Shmaya, the Yidden were successful at conquering the local fortress, known as Metzudas Tzion, from the hands of the Yevusim, and from that point on, the location became known as Har Tzion, the capital city of Malchus Beis Dovid.

SHAAR HACHADASH Moving up along the western side of the chomah, we pass SHAAR HACHADASH. It provides the shortest way through the Christian Quarter of the Old City. This new gate was constructed merely 90 years ago, making it the newest of all gates to the city. Its design is neither tall nor intricate, and it is more serviceable than elaborate, with no major history to share.

SHAAR SHECHEM Around the bend over to the northern side of the Old City walls, toward the east, we pass SHAAR SHECHEM, or the Damascus Gate. Located on the wall bordering alongside the Muslim Quarter, this gate is primarily used by the Arabs. Many Arab vendors peddle their wares near it. With little fortresses framing the top of the shaar, this is one of the more impressive-looking gates of the chomah. Shaar Shechem is frequented by visitors coming from the northern direction of Yerushalayim and the city of Shechem. It is believed that it was at the site of this shaar that Yirmiyahu Hanavi composed the kinus on the churban of Yerushalayim and was imprisoned.

SHAAR HAPERACHIM Continuing further east, we meet SHAAR HAPERACHIM, also known as Herod’s Gate. During the Second Beis Hamikdash, Herod (Hordus) ruled over Yerushalayim. He erected many beautiful buildings and set up fortresses and strong walls around the city. The most significant structure that he was involved in was the Beis Hamikdash, which he renewed and refurbished with gold and marble stones. Among his building projects was also this special shaar that he constructed. On top of the gate there are many flowers engraved in the stone, hence the gate’s floral name.
Standing before the striking Old City walls of Yerushalayim stone, deep emotions are inspired within. We murmur a heartfelt tefillah that we all be zocheh to enter the magnificent gates of a rebuilt Yerushalayim — — עומדות היו רגלינו בשעריך ירושליםonce again! 128 / THE MONSEY VIEW

EVERYONE WANTS TO DO THE RIGHT THING and have yiras Shamayim. To get to this goal, we often read sifrei mussar that instill in us this yiras Shamayim. However, without being wellversed in halacha, even a well-meaning person can easily transgress the Torah. Take, for example, someone who decides to work on the middah of hakaras hatov: he toils over many sifrei mussar on the importance of this middah and tries to find opportunities to be makir tov. So, when it comes time to pay back his friend the money he lent to him prior, he decides he will bring his learning to action and buy him a gift to express his tremendous hakaras hatov. Though he obviously meant well, he actually transgressed the prohibition of paying ribbis. Even though in the case above the person didn’t intend to commit a transgression, the Gemara still says that such an individual needs kaparah (Nazir 23a) — especially because he wasn’t fully innocent, as he should have made time to learn the appropriate halachos. Halacha is, after all, the user-guide for life. The Chofetz Chaim says that this is why the Midrash says that one who lacks knowledge can’t learn mussar; the simple understanding is that the mussar wouldn’t help one who doesn’t have an understanding of halacha (see introduction to Shemiras Halashon and the Chazon Ish’s Emunah U’Bitachon, perek 3). There isn’t much a person can possibly do without knowing halacha, as almost every area of one’s life requires knowledge of the appropriate halachos. How can he hold a proper conversation if he isn’t versed in the laws of lashon hara, chanufah (flattery) and onaas devarim (hurtful speech)? How can he eat without knowing the intricate and complicated halachos of which bracha to make on mixtures of food? How can one do business without knowing the laws of buying and selling, overcharging, the detailed laws of taking interest, and the laws of paying one’s workers on time? Needless to say, on Shabbos, when there are so many complicated laws, knowing halacha is crucial. Simple tasks such as peeling or washing fruits or even tidying up the house may fall under the prohibition of borer without the appropriate conditions. The Yaaros Devash even says that if someone hasn’t learned hilchos Shabbos thoroughly, it is impossible not to transgress it. In all of these scenarios, we see it is impossible to live as a frum Yid without thorough knowledge of halacha. As the Chazon Ish says, with every movement, one needs to seek the council of the Shulchan Aruch. The Baal Shem Tov says that often the yetzer hara wouldn’t tell someone to stop learning Torah altogether because many people would never accept such an idea. However, the yetzer hara might
132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 25, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
tell a person to pay less attention to areas that will help him change, which is why there is a big yetzer hara not to learn halacha and mussar — as these areas have the largest impact on a person’s growth. To combat this yetzer hara, we are starting this series. Even though the questions and answers presented here do not replace a rav, they are nevertheless useful for a few rea-
sons. First, a rav may not always be available, and a person must sometimes make an on-the-spot decision. And second, even more simply than that, many times a person may not even realize there is a shailah at hand! This series will, be’ezras Hashem, increase one’s awareness of the many halachic shailos he is confronted with on a regular basis, and present a general approach as to what to
do when presented with a questionable situation. Readers are encouraged to send in questions and ideas regarding which halachos they think are overlooked or less clear so they can be addressed in future articles. Be’ezras Hashem, by increasing awareness of many relevant halachos, we can certainly contribute to the bias haMoshiach, bimeheirah b’yameinu.
Brushing Hair On Shabbos, one generally wants to look his best l’kavod Shabbos. However, there are several melachos that limit how one may go about looking his best. Let’s take a look at brushing one’s hair or sheitel. How may one brush one’s hair on Shabbos? One of the 39 melachos is gozez, which includes cutting outgrowths of one’s body, like hair, nails, cuticles, loose skin, etc. The halacha says that brushing one’s hair presents serious halachic shailos of gozez, because it causes hair to fall out.1 So what can we do with messy hair? Think of Sara’la and Miri, who fell asleep cramped together on Esti’s bed leil Shabbos. Baruch Hashem for meleches machsheves! For
every melachah, there is the heter of davar she’einu miskaven. This means that if one has no kavanah to perform the melachah and it is not inevitable (a psik reisha) that it will happen, then the act is muttar. Therefore, in our case, it would be muttar to tidy Sara’la’s, Miri’s, and Esti’s hair, if 1) one uses a very soft brush (or one’s fingers), 2) it is done in a very soft manner so as to just tidy up the hair, and not actually brush it in a way that hair would not inevitably be pulled out, and 3) without intent to remove any hairs (not even the loosely attached ones). The poskim mention that minhag Ashkenaz is to set aside a brush specifically for Shabbos to get around the issur of ovdin d’chol.2
How may one brush a sheitel on Shabbos? With sheitels there is no problem of gozez because gozez only applies to something connected to one’s body. However, there could be other problems involved. One is the problem of koreyah (ripping), and another is soseir (destroying). For those who aren’t careful with their sheitels (or are super nice to their daughters by letting them play Mommy and Baby with an authentic sheitel), there could be another problem. If the sheitel is in a condition that one wouldn’t wear it outside without brushing it, then brushing it would violate the melachah of makeh
b’patish.3 So what’s the halacha? The poskim mention that it is assur to brush a sheitel that is too messy to be worn without brushing because of makeh b’patish. However, one is allowed to brush a sheitel that is only slightly messy with a soft brush, only to neaten the hair in a way that it is not inevitable that hair will be pulled out, and without any intention to pull out hair. Here, too, the poskim mention that the minhag is to set aside a brush specifically for Shabbos to get around the issur of ovdin d’chol.4
See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 303:27. The poskim point out that it is a problem because it is a psik reisha and because it is considered as if one has kavanah to pull out hair since, to separate strands of hair, one often needs to pull out hair as well. 1
There is a machlokes Rishonim whether this is an issur d’Oraisa, since beautifying the body is considered tzrichah l’gufah, or whether it is an issur d’rabbanan since one is not using the hair and it is therefore considered a malachah she’aino tzrichah l’gufah. According to the Rambam, even a melachah she’aino tzrichah l’gufah is an issur d’Oraisa. 2 See Mishnah Berurah 303:87; Igros Moshe, Orach Chaim II, siman 78; Shemiras Shabbos K’Hilchasa 14:50. The Ohr Letzion writes that the Sephardim do not have the minhag to set aside a brush specifically for Shabbos (Ohr Letzion II 43:3). 3
See Ketzos Hashulchan, siman 146; Ohr Letzion II 27:10.
4
Shemiras Shabbos K’Hilchasa 14:52.
The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

THEY LOVE ME JUST LIKE MY FATHER DID BY: S FISHER
“Two years ago my father called me and my siblings into his room. He blessed us with Birchas HaBonim, that was the last time I saw him... I felt so alone.” This is the story of one of the orphans who is a member of ZELAZE. ZELAZE has provided a personal support system for thousands of widows and orphans from every part of Eretz Yisroel. From the moment of loss, ZELAZE works tirelessly to provide for every need of the freshly bereaved wid-
ows and orphans. They are there, with open arms and open hearts, 24 hours a day. ZELAZE organizes many varied programs throughout the year: weekend getaways, bas mitzvah groups , Yom Tov events and much more. One of their most ambitious undertakings is a summer camp for hundreds of orphaned girls. “This year ZELAZE is planning a camp for me and all my friends. Please help me raise the money so we can all go to the camp this year! At ZELAZE camp I feel like there is someone close to me,

PICKET FENCES Fences are known to be icons of the American landscape, and the white picket fence, with its evenly spaced vertical boards, enjoyed popularity in middle-class suburbia from the Colonial era, when colonists wanted to keep their chickens in their yards, until even today. Picket fences, as the front yard’s boundary, give homeowners just enough privacy, while still allowing views from the street and porch. A picket fence should ideally be between 3 and 4 feet tall.
PLACE THAT GATE Certain premises, by law, must be gated, each with its own specifications: • Military areas • Airports and seaports • Water treatment and chemical plants • Industrial plants • Railroad depots, crossings and train yards • Municipal authorities and transportation terminals • Zoos and aquariums • Swimming pools
GATED COMMUNITIES
Although there are so many pretty white boundaries referred to as pickets, the official picket is pointed or round at the top, designed to shed water. Why white? Because affluent colonists preserved their fences with whitewash (a mixture of lime and water) to match the home’s trim color, though in Colonial Williamsburg, VA, they were left unpainted. In the 1840s some homeowners became creative and coated fences in green and brown, but in the early 20th century white came back into vogue, making white pickets the American icon mentioned above. Picket fence has another meaning, too: text that lack spaces between words, such as Old Latin documents.

A stone gate, the defining symbol of their exclusivity, sits outside of the village of Tuxedo Park, manned by village police to prevent nonresidents from entering the opulent enclave. Tuxedo Park, just 20 minutes from Monsey, is a gated community, defined as a residential community or housing estate with controlled, and often guarded, entrances for pedestrians, bicycles and automobiles.
Gated communities often have shared amenities, like parks, golf clubs and schools. An estimated 20,000 gated communities were built across the USA by 1997,
a large part of them in rich areas in California. Tuxedo Park was established in the 1880s by Pierre Lorillard who owned The Breakers mansion in Newport prior to selling it to the Vanderbilts. Some of Tuxedo Park’s famous past residents were Mark Twain, who summered there, banker J.P. Morgan of Chase fame, and William Waldorf Astor. In Tuxedo Park there are no house numbers, because anyone allowed entry is expected to know where they are going. The term “tuxedo” for men’s formalwear was coined after the clothing Tuxedo Park residents would wear upon visiting NYC. Is it any wonder, being that it was home to the echelon of society? Legend has it that a person, upset about not being allowed to set up residence in Tuxedo Park, purchased the surrounding land and donated it as state parks to inhibit its growth. While Tuxedo Park is surrounded on all sides by Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain Park, Sterling Forest State Park, Ringwood State Park and Dater Mountain County Park, we are still left to wonder if the legend has any credence. Another wealthy gated community nearby is right off Montebello Road in Suffern, The Ramapo Cirque, where 97 houses were built on a former estate. A private gated enclave with a vibrant heimishe community is the area of Sea Gate, surrounded on three sides by water and private beaches and separated by a 12-foot-high chain-link fence. Residents refer to their community as “the gate” and to adjoining Coney Island as “out of the gate.” There, too, the rich and famous once lived at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, among them the Morgan and Vanderbilt families. About 80 percent of their current population of 7,000 is Yiddish. One of Sea Gate’s most prominent residents was the Ribnitzer Rebbe zt”l.
FAMOUS BARRIERS
GREAT WALL OF CHINA The world’s longest gate is the famous landmark, the Great Wall of China. Most of the existing wall dates back to the Ming Dynasty when thousands of workers likely died building it.The Great Wall was originally built to fend off invasions from the north.
BERLIN WALL The defining symbol of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall was built by the communist government between East and West Berlin to keep out western “fascists” from entering and undermining the socialist state (and mostly to keep their citizens in its clutches). In 1989, as communism began to collapse, ecstatic crowds swarmed the wall, some crossing freely and others chipping away at the wall with hammers. Until today, it is an enduring symbol of that era.
HADRIAN’S WALL This wall, with its forts, turrets and observation points every third of a mile, was built approximately 2,140 years ago by Emperor Hadrian as the north-west frontier of the Roman empire for nearly 300 years. Entire sections remain intact, though some parts were dismantled, its stones used for nearby construction projects.
US-MEXICAN BORDER All throughout his campaign, Trump promised to build a wall at the U.S.Mexican border (and make Mexico pay for it too!) to keep immigrants out. There’s been a lot of talk, but not much action. What’s preventing illegal crossings now is a series of walls and fences along the border. It’s not one How some illegal immigrants contiguous structure, but groupings of enter the U.S. physical walls, secured in between with “virtual fences” — sensors and cameras that are monitored by the U.S. Border Patrol. The total length of the U.S.-Mexican border is 1,989 miles; physical barriers extend over just 580 of these miles. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, upon being invited to a meeting with Trump in 2017, said that they won’t pay, adding, “Mexico doesn’t believe in walls.”

So today in the clubhouse again? But as we agreed, no spying or investigating.
It’s not simple at all. The anti-missionary organization prepared a plan to save them. We need a lot of siyata d’Shmaya.
Mutty, Shimi! My father asked if we could gather today to daven for the children taken by the missionaries.
What?
Right! We’ll play and enjoy ourselves with no worries.
Is it that bad?
In the afternoon.
I wonder what’s going on at the anti-missionary organization. Avraham’s father doesn’t usually call us so urgently.
Your father is saving neshamos; it’s a huge zechus. Don’t worry. And of course we’ll daven.
Avraham! I was knocking on the door for five minutes and there was no answer, so I came in. What happened?
My father and his staff at the organization are going out tonight to save the children from the missionaries. I’m so worried. You must daven with me and keep the details of the operation a secret.
I am much calmer now.

Recap: Mutty’s parents tell him not to worry about the business, and he decides to stop the spying on Gavriel.

The Different Styles of Monsey Homes Exploring architectural structures in our area BROUGHT TO YOU BY: YOEL GORALNIK
Featured Home Style:
SPLIT LEVEL
A split-level home works well on hilly land. That’s why we see many of them around Monsey.
Split-level homes, also known as tri-level homes, and sometimes as divided-entry homes, were introduced in the 1950s, but earned their popularity some 20 years later, when demand for new homes in the suburbs were high. Split levels, small in square footage yet adequate in living space, was the ideal structure for narrow and hilly lots.
168 / THE MONSEY VIEW
A split level floor plan
ATTRIBUTES: The split-level home has staggered floor levels, which divides the living space into three (or four) different areas, connected to one another by a half-flight of steps. General home activities happen on the middle level, where the entry, kitchen, and living and dining rooms are. The upper level houses the bedrooms and bathroom/s, and the lower level holds a family room/playroom and/or garage, and sometimes an additional bedroom is added for an older child or as a guest room. The laundry/utility area is sometimes also in that lower level. In some split-level homes, the garage is positioned under the main level. Other times that area is just a crawl space or used for storage.
PROS: This style home provides the maximum amount of living area on a small lot and works very well with sloped lots, being that it allows for an underground crawl space under half of the house only. The multi-floor design also give family members of different age groups their privacy, being that each can have their own area when it comes to having guests, spending quiet time, playing or working. Having the different functions on different levels also makes maintaining the home’s organization simpler. The short flights of stairs are also appealing to some.
FYI: A stacked split level has as many as five or six levels. Its bedrooms are stacked one or two over the other on separate levels, earning this type of home its name.
CONS: The stairs all over the place may pose a risk to the safety of toddlers; it’s hard to install gates in so many areas. Aging owners can also have difficulty with the many stairs, even though they are not full flights. Energy management is another hurdle, since even though the living space is divided in separate levels, they’re still open one to another, and the AC or heat can’t be contained in just one section as needed. It’s also hard to stabilize the temperature over so many open levels. Noise, too, transfers easily from one area to the next, for the same reason. The asymmetrical design of the split level also needs the right type of landscaping to make it aesthetically appealing. The kitchens in split levels are often at the back of the house, sometimes compromising the natural light conditions.
UPGRADE POTENTIAL: As one expert says, “Split-level homes can be a remodeling nightmare.” Due to its unique floor plan, it’s difficult to make large changes to the structure, but with the right ideas, it can get a face-lift. The garage area can be renovated easily if more living space is needed, for a rental apartment, or for an in-home office.

845-659-1193 realty1193@gmail.com
PREVALENCE: As mentioned above, split-level homes work well in hilly areas, and indeed, they can be found in many of Old Monsey’s hilly streets in the West Maple and Grove areas, as well as dotting the rest of Monsey’s landscape.
