BACK-TO-SCHOOL BRAINSTORM Dear Schools, As a mother of girls, I feel the need to share with you how hectic and stressful it is to shop for school supplies. (We never have this problem with the boys!) Every year, my daughters arrive with their lists of many items, each with detailed specifications, that I honestly have no idea how to identify. Poring over the list while trying to decipher the differences among various types of pronged binders and being jostled around by all the other mothers and girls trying to do the same is a nightmare. It is dizzying, sweat-inducing and perhaps... unnecessary? Here’s a great idea that I would love to see implemented: Place bulk orders for items that each class needs, and charge the parents a set price for each child. That would leave us parents to just purchase backpacks for our girls, allowing them (and us mothers) to enjoy the experience of buying something that reflects their taste. And we’ll still need to buy uniforms, of course. (That alone is stressful enough.) If you implement such a system, we mothers will thank you with hearts full of gratitude! RE: APATHY THAT HARMS (Inbox, Issue 156) Recently, you printed a letter in which the writer bemoans a scene that unfolded before her at the local Costco, when she saw a yungerman ignore a woman who was obviously dehydrated, telling the dehydrated woman that he did not have any cash. First of all, if it was a medical emergency, then the “dehydrated” woman could have borrowed a phone to call Hatzoloh, or at the worst, called 911 from inside Costco. Second of all, there is mitzvah to be melamed zechus the yungerman; maybe he couldn’t have helped the woman. Third, there are unfortunately many scammers out there who pose as frum Yidden pretending to be stranded motorists, who need gas money to get back home to Brooklyn or Queens, for example. Vision Screenings vs. Eye Exams:
Why Are Eye Exams Important? Is it really that important to have routine eye exams? What if you just passed a vision screening at work or school — do you still need an eye exam? Good vision is essential for children to reach their full academic potential. It’s been widely stated that roughly 80 percent of what children learn in school is presented visually, and vision problems can have a profound effect on learning. According to the American Optometric Association, an estimated 20 percent of preschool children have vision problems. Other research shows that 24 percent of adolescents with correctable refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism) don’t have their vision fully corrected with up-to-date prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Even if your child passes a school vision screening, it doesn’t guarantee he or she has perfect vision or has all the required visual skills needed for optimum performance in the classroom. In fact, a number of studies have identified significant shortcomings of children’s vision screenings, including: • • •
Children with significant learning-related vision problems are often able to pass simple school vision screenings Parents being unaware their child failed a vision screening Lack of follow-up to make sure children who fail screening actually have an eye exam
Also, poor standardization of vision screening standards among different states and lack of reporting requirements make it impossible to adequately evaluate the effectiveness of school vision screenings. On the other end of the age spectrum, many older Americans often forgo routine eye exams and falsely believe that free vision screenings offer adequate monitoring and protection of their eyesight. This is extremely dangerous, since the most common causes of blindness — glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration — increase with age. Vision loss often can be prevented or reduced if these conditions are diagnosed and treated early. But the only way this can be done is to have routine comprehensive eye exams. Don’t take chances with your eyesight as you get older. If you’re over age 60, have an annual eye exam to preserve your vision and make sure you are seeing the world as clearly as possible. Though Medicare does not cover routine eye exams, if you have a Medicare supplement policy or other medical or vision insurance, your benefits may include an annual comprehensive eye exam. “YOCHEVED, when will you finally clean up your room?” asked her mother. “I literally don’t have even a minute to spare,” Yocheved said. “For real, I have sixteen subjects. You see what time I go to bed every night.” Yocheved’s mother had to admit that her daughter’s schedule was bursting at the seams. From waking up early for the bus until finishing her final homework assignment late at night, Yocheved truly did not have a moment to spare. “All right,” her mother conceded, “but you should really try harder to keep your room in order.” “Sure,” Yocheved chirped happily. “I’ll try!” And with that, Yocheved ran off. Not long after that conversation, summer vacation arrived, and Yocheved had more than a week off between school and camp. Her mother quietly observed Yocheved to see whether she would truly prioritize her room. But instead of using the time to organize herself, Yocheved slept in late, talked on the phone, played games and scampered off with her friends. If anything, her room was worse than ever without the structure of school. Had Yocheved not been telling the truth when she told her mother she did not have time? No, Yocheved really did want to clean her room and was genuinely held back by her busy school schedule. However, once her schedule cleared up, Yocheved found the increase in time too tempting. Everything else became a bigger priority. It says in this week’s parsha, “Hama’achilcha mann bamidbar… u’lema’an nasosecha… — [Hashem] Who fed you in the desert… in order to test you” (Devarim 8:16). One might wonder, what was the test in receiving mann? Hashem sustained us completely in the desert. Not only did we not need to spend our time sewing or mending our clothes, but we did not even need to worry about finding food to feed our families. Even more, we did not even have to spend time cooking meals. Everything was done for us. What exactly was the test? Sforno explains that we were being tested in whether or not we would still keep the Torah faithfully if all of our physical needs were provided. Many people wish they had more time to spend learning or davening, but when they do have free time, they use that time to “unwind”

from their hectic schedules by wasting time in various ways. A man may wish he could sit in kollel and learn, but if he were to suddenly receive a windfall of money such that he would never need to work again, would he immediately run off to kollel? If all the responsibilities regarding clothing and food were taken care of, would a woman spend her time doing chesed? A wealthy man once came to visit the Chofetz Chaim and saw the dire poverty of the talmidim who dedicated their lives to learning Torah. The man turned to the Chofetz Chaim with a very generous proposal. He wanted to provide a stipend to each of the talmidim so that they would no longer have to struggle with parnassah, and could instead channel all of their energy into their learning. The Chofetz Chaim was aghast. He vehemently refused the offer, saying that he does not want his yeshivah to be destroyed. Clearly, the Chofetz Chaim understood that having one’s needs provided is a difficult nisayon. It has been said that Hashem does not grant people wealth because He does not want to them to be people who do not keep their word. Many people promise Hashem that if He would bestow wealth upon them, then they would give generously to tzedakah. Hashem knows better than that. When people make such promises, they usually are sincere. However, when wealth arrives, it brings its own temptations and challenges. Once a person has so much money in his hands, it becomes far more difficult to give it away. When a person comes into money, he faces his first test: to recognize that everything comes from Hashem. It becomes even harder if he worked hard to earn the money; he might give credit to his talents and skills. But Who gave him these talents and skills? And Who decided that he should be matzliach? Many intelligent, talented people struggle with parnassah. The first step to using Hashem’s gifts correctly is recognizing that they come from Him in the first place. It says in Mesilas Yesharim that everything in life is a test. Poverty is a test, but so is wealth. May we have the strength to overcome all of our nisyonos and serve Hashem with sincerity and truth, whether in poverty, wealth or anything in between.

90-Year-Old Kiddie Coaster Gets Landmark Designation It is one of the original rides that drew youngsters when Playland first opened in Rye in May 1928, and nine decades later, the park’s Kiddy Coaster has been designated an official Roller Coaster Landmark. Constructed in 1927, the 485-foot-long oval coaster reaches a height of 16 feet and has four gentle dips to give the park’s youngest visitors a mini thrill ride of their own, reported the Rye Patch. The wooden tiny-tykes coaster was designed by Frank W. Darling around a playground for small children and was completed in December 1927. The historic designation was granted by the American Coaster Enthusiasts, the world’s first organization of roller coaster and amusement park fans, which is dedicated to preserving, promoting and enjoying roller coasters. According to The Journal News, more than 40 rides have been granted the landmark designation, which often preserves wooden roller coasters whose numbers have plummeted worldwide to less than 300 over the years. The Kiddy Coaster joins the park’s iconic Dragon Coaster as Playland’s second roller coaster to be granted historic landmark status. “The Kiddy Coaster has been providing pint-size

thrills for youngsters since day one at Playland,” said Westchester County Executive George Latimer. “Today this very special ride, one of seven original rides that pre-date 1930, joins its ‘big brother’ the iconic Dragon Coaster as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark.” Those thoughts were echoed by Kathleen O’Connor, Westchester County’s Commissioner of Parks, who described the Kiddy Coaster as one of Playland’s “fabulous jewels.”
Minimum Age to Purchase Cigarettes, E-Cigs Raised to 21 As of this month, tobacco products and e-cigs will only be available for purchase in Rockland County to those over 21 years old, raising the previous minimum age of 18. The change mirrors existing laws regarding the sale of alcohol. The new legislation, intended to promote greater health, was sponsored by Legislator Aney Paul, who has been a nurse for 30 years. It went into effect on July 17 and covers cigarettes, chewing tobacco, cigars, e-cigs, rolling papers and other paraphernalia related to smoking, reported The Journal News. Paul said that she hopes that raising the legal age to purchase these products will result in fewer young people becoming smokers. “While it will take time for the benefits to become clear, we can expect reduced suffering from lung cancer and the many diseases that have been documented to

result from the use of tobacco products,” said Paul. Anyone caught selling any tobacco-related products or e-cigs to those under 21 will face violations of $2,000 per day. The Rockland County Health Department, which will be enforcing the new law, has already advised all vendors of the legislation and will be conducting compliance checks after an introductory educational period. Vendors can also take advantage of a bimonthly certified tobacco training course given at the Yeager Health Complex in Pomona. A former smoker who credits kicking the habit with his own improved health, County Executive Ed Day said that the new law is good news for Rockland County. “We are the healthiest county in New York State, and any way that we can keep tobacco products out of the hands of our young people will help them live longer, healthier lives,” said Day.

“Rabi Yonasan used to say: Whoever fulfills the Torah in poverty will ultimately fulfill it in wealth, and whoever neglects the Torah in wealth will ultimately neglect it in poverty.” (Avos 4:11) THE MEFORSHIM EXPLAIN that a Yid who needs to work just to make ends meet and finds it difficult to leave his source of parnassah to set aside time to learn, yet understands the importance of fulfilling his obligations to Torah and is koveia itim — such a Yid will eventually have enough money so that he can set aside more time to fulfill his obligations to the Torah. We face this test every day, and every day we must again assess what we have to do in order to fulfill our obligations according to our current situation. Ultimately, Hashem will determine if we are ready to fulfill them even when we have more money and more time. However, the yetzer hara does everything in his power to ensure that we will never reach that easier situation and devote more time to Torah, or that we fail to fulfill even our minimum obligations in more difficult circumstances. Even though not everyone is able to learn at a high level, since Chazal’s words were written for all people and for all generations, another lesson of this mishnah is to recognize that everyone has the ability to learn, regardless of his level or the generation in which he lives. In Parshas Ki Sisa, Moshe Rabbeinu asked Hashem (Shemos 33:18): “Hareini na es Kevodecha — Show me Your Honor.” Hashem answered that Moshe cannot see Hashem’s face, kavyachol, “Ki lo yerani ha’adam vechai — because man shall not see Me and live.”

We can find a deeper understanding to this exchange by recalling the words of the Gemara: “The will of a person is his honor.” Thus, Moshe Rabbeinu was asking Hashem, “Show me what is Your Will; what do You expect from us Yidden?” Hashem replied, “When a Yid cannot see Me, because of the tremendous hastoras panim, and can’t feel My closeness with him, yet ‘vechai,’ he still lives according to the way of the Torah, the way of emunah, and still tries to do his best just like when he does feel the closeness, this is My will.” When we continue to seek

connection even when it’s hard, and we strive to learn and fulfill mitzvos even when we can’t find the geshmak, in such times we are in a state of poverty. The Gemara teaches us that poverty can refer to poverty in knowledge, and what greater lack of knowledge is there than not knowing the feeling of closeness to Hashem. The Nesivos Sholom describes this state as having our emunah behind the clouds. It’s difficult to sense Hashem, yet we believe He is there even if we cannot see Him. And if we can serve Hashem even during such difficult times of poverty, then we will be zoche to serve Hashem in times of real ashirus when we will clearly feel the greatest closeness and connection to Hashem, and feel calm and peaceful, enveloped in His protection.
Conversely, if a person neglects this connection with Hashem and cannot see Hashem when everything in ruchniyus comes easily and is filled with geshmak, for such a person that connection will eventually disappear completely. That is because the only way to feel true closeness to Hashem is through striving for connection even when we cannot feel Him. The Apter Rav, zt”l, used to say in the name of Reb Elimelech from Lizhensk that before Moshiach will come, Hashem will take the stick of emunah and shake it vigorously, and whoever will hold on tight will survive and merit to see Moshiach. Indeed, we are living in times of great “poverty”; we feel Hashem is very far away, and it is more difficult than ever to strengthen ourselves so that we can stay strong until the days of ashirus. In the times of the Beis Hamikdash, every Yid had the necessary four amos to bow down on Yom Kippur, even though it didn’t appear that there would be any room. If so, how were they able to bow down at all? Didn’t they see that there’s no room to do so? They did so because they experienced that feeling of closeness and relied on Hashem to take care of all the issues. No one even thought to worry about where the necessary space would be found, and in the merit of their emunah, Hashem performed a miracle. This is indeed what we daven for every day. We want to see and feel this closeness to Hashem right now, and as the Tanna teaches us, we keep waiting for the time when we will go from fulfilling our avodas Hashem from our current state of poverty to fulfilling it in wealth. By: Leah Stern When the midday heat finally gives way to some breeze during late afternoon, the outdoors beckons. And let’s not forget that the children’s appetites are heartier on their own turf! They do own the outdoors after all, don’t they? Backyard suppers are a great solution, but they sure can be exhausting. I’ve done my fair share of running up and down the porch stairs with trays full of soup, mains and sides. Complete supper sandwiches, on the other hand, are simple to prepare, transport and serve, allowing you to enjoy the last wisps of summer and gain extra quality family time.

In our family, this recipe is adult-only food. For the children, I omit the cumin and spread spiced mayo on the pitas. Yields 8 wraps

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut onion in half and slice thinly. 2. Heat oil in frying pan. Add onion slices and saute until they start to brown.

Pour into heated frying pan and distribute to cover entire surface of pan. 3. Sprinkle with sauteed onions. 4. Flip egg over when bottom starts to brown. Sprinkle generously with cheese and add toppings over cheese. 5. Cover pot and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until cheese is melted.

Yes, sight is a blessing unlike any other, unique in its ability to bond man with man, his environment and Hashem. Perhaps it is for this reason that of all the traditional five senses, only sight is mentioned in Birchas Hashachar, in the bracha of Poke’ach Ivrim. Without sight, where would we be? Historically, the answer to that question would have been very unpleasant, indeed. In many eras, individuals with visual impairments were considered to be a drain on society, unproductive, to have lives not worth living. To that end, blind people were often institutionalized (or worse) despite normative cognitive function. For those who lived out their lives at home with family, life was often just a long string of days spent groping in the dark. Baruch Hashem, the world has made great strides since then, with society finally realizing that folks with visual impairments are fully capable of living meaningful and productive lives. With time, methods, services and devices to enhance the lives of those with low

Helen Keller was perhaps the most famous student to have attended Perkins, and though both deaf and blind, she became a famous lecturer, political activist and published author. Perkins today is directly involved with many of the new technologies that are being created for the visually impaired population. Out west, the Colorado Center for the Blind focuses heavily on travel

Getting Around For many visually impaired individuals, the world is a scary place. But it doesn’t have to be. Orientation and Mobility Specialists are trained to help the visually impaired learn how to orient themselves to their surroundings and safely maneuver in any environment. The white cane is one of the most valuable low-tech tools a visually challenged person can have. Proper cane technique enables the carrier to feel obstacles or changes in elevation in their path, thereby preventing potential injury. The white cane can also be used in conjunction with a trained guide dog. Guide dogs are specially trained to follow specific commands from their handlers, such as to walk straight or turn left/right, but are also trained in “intelligent disobedience.” This means that if the dog recognizes a danger that his han-

dler is unaware of, he will automatically stop or angle his body against the handler’s to avoid the danger. They are also trained to judge the height and width of doorways and entrances to avoid unpleasant meetings of head and frame, and to maneuver through traffic or crowds. A guide dog also provides a sense of security for its handler, as not being able to see who is around one can be unnerving and dangerous. Knowing one has an ally with sharp teeth and undying devotion goes far in emboldening a person. The Seeing Eye, America’s first guide dog training association, is located in Morristown, New Jersey, and places trained animals with the visually impaired. As a philanthropic organization, the total cost for gaining ownership of a fully trained dog is only $150; the price has never risen in 75 years! The cost includes round-trip airfare, lodging during the training period, and of course, the dog. For those who don’t want a dog
in their home, but do seek to have the enhanced security of a guide animal, miniature horses can be trained as well.
Echolocation Echolocation is the ability to sense the details of one’s surroundings by the way echoes bounce off objects when sounds are made. Blind people who have trained (or instinctively learned) how to use clicking sounds to form mental images in their minds are able to navigate their world with a sense of security and ease. Echolocation master Daniel Kish teaches his technique called FlashSonar to other blind individuals, giving them the ability to “see” again. His services are available all over the U.S. and abroad. It only takes a few days for most people to acquire echolocation skills. Students of his become so comfortable in their surroundings that they even mountain bike without fear!

THE LITTLE-KNOWN, VASTLY MISUNDERSTOOD VISION DISORDER: Cortical Visual Impairment When the average person thinks of visual impairment, they think of damaged retinas or corneas, cloudy cataracts or pressure problems associated with glaucoma, but there’s another type of vision disorder that is little spoken of and much misunderstood. It’s called Cortical Visual Impairment, or CVI for short, and fools many a parent and medical practitioner. Oftentimes, a child with CVI will confound doctors who haven’t heard of the condition because though the child doesn’t seem to see well, the eyes, upon examination, are without damage, or with damage that isn’t in accordance with the symptoms. With CVI, the problem lies not in the health of the eye, but with the visual processing center in the brain. So while the eye is intaking information, the brain simply doesn’t know how to interpret that information. The good news is that once a diagnosis is received, therapy specifically formulated for CVI can be started, and most children have greatly improved vision over the course of time. Common markers for CVI can include: • A preference for bright colors, with red and yellow being the most easily seen • The desire to stare straight at lights • The ability to see moving objects better than still ones • A delayed response (when an item is waved near the child, it will take a while before the child turns his/ her head) • No blink response when something comes near the eyes or touches the bridge of the nose • The preference for familiar objects over the novel (kids with CVI usually prefer toys that they know rather than new ones) • Poor spatial awareness and depth perception • Many children with CVI see best by turning their

heads to the side and do not see well in the lower field of vision • The inability to combine looking with reaching, as a singular stream (a child will notice a target, look away, and then reach for the object, missing it) • A history of at least one significant neurological event (sometimes the event is unable to be pinpointed, but other signs may hint that an event transpired, such as a comorbid condition such as cerebral palsy or a seizure disorder)
A Mother Describes CVI: “When people ask me how it is that my child can see but technically be blind, I tell them to think of themselves in a foreign country, hearing a foreign language. In such a situation, you hear the sound of people speaking, but you lack the ability to comprehend most of what you hear. You might be able to pick out a word here and there, but overall, those words being spoken are meaningless to you. I also tell them to imagine a 1,000 piece puzzle, the pieces dumped out and the box missing. Nothing makes sense without that picture on the box to decode the puzzle! With CVI, there is a lot information being sent to the brain, but no key to decipher it. Helping a child with CVI understand what they are seeing is a slow process, but they do improve over time. Sadly, there are some kids who are misdiagnosed with autism or other conditions when they actually have CVI. Likewise, there are regularly functioning children with minimal CVI who may seem more clumsy than average, or have other issues that would improve with the correct therapy. CVI just isn’t well understood, as it isn’t in the public eye — pun intended.”

Theodore Roosevelt was one of the frontiersman who helped eliminate the stigma associated with eyeglasses.
What is it about our children that they beg for eyeglasses with their 20/20 vision? And what is it about us mothers that made me purchase an adorable frame for my son when his brother’s prescription was being filled? Was it just because of my own wish for fashion glasses growing up, when my parents were too sensible to acquiesce to such follies? Today’s children, for the most part, wear their eyeglasses with pride. For adults, too, this bedtime-only attire turned into trendy accessory wear in recent years. But it wasn’t always so. Once upon a time, wearing spectacles was actually considered socially humiliating. Originally looked upon as a medical aid alone, it was embarrassing to be seen in public with a pair (or a single lens, as in the case of monocles) of glasses until the late 19th century. It took time for them to evolve into a socially acceptable, and then even fashionable, accessory. So what helped spectacles cross the line from degrading to upgrading? For the most part, influential people wearing them. One of the ambassadors of these vision aids was President Theodore Roosevelt, who hit the public scene proudly and allowed himself to be photographed with a handsome pair of of pince-nez glasses. From there, their style and make evolved into the large glasses industry of today. The very name of the product, though, is no longer reflective of its make, as the lenses, originally made of glass, are for the most part made of plastic. So practically speaking, how is a pair of glasses different from other medical aids? In reality, not much more than the fact that men of influence made the effort to fashionize them. Isn’t it time to do the same with hearing aids, canes and walkers?

Horn-rimmed glasses These glasses are characterized by their bold appearance upon the wearer’s face and are made of plastic (originally, they were made out of horn or tortoiseshell). One of the first styles to be looked upon as fashionable, they enjoyed popularity in separate periods in the early, mid and late 1900s, and more recently in the early 21st century.
GI glasses Designed for maximum durability and minimum cost, these impact-resistant, water-proof and let’s admit, ugly, frames, are handed out to U.S. army recruits upon being enlisted, though it’s possible to purchase a pair without signing up for Uncle Sam, too. Throughout the years, colors and styles have varied.
Rimless glasses These lenses, mounted directly to the bridge and temples as opposed to being set into a frame, were popular as early as the 1880s (initially as pince-nez glasses), and have never completely gone out of vogue.
Cat eye glasses Also called “cat eyes” or “cat glasses,” they have an upsweep at the temples and were mainly popular in the 1950s and ‘60s. Like many older styles, you see plenty of them in contemporary eyewear.
Doublebridge glasses This design, with an extra bar across the temple, is popular today and has also enjoyed an era of fame in the mid-1900s.

These single corrective lenses enhanced vision in one eye in the earlier years of vision correction. The legendary John Watson of Sherlock Holmes’ fame was often seen with a monocle.
Timeline Until the late 13th Century, if you were nearsighted, farsighted or had an astigmatism, you just had to learn to live with it, although scholars did make use of reading stones, which functioned much like magnifying glasses. Between 1260 and 1290, the first wearable spectacles were introduced: two reading stones connected with a hinge, balanced on the bridge of the nose. Its inventor is unknown, though it is said to have originated in Italy.

I LIKE TO PREPARE my husband before I inform him of undesirable news. For example, the other day I lost ten dollars. “I’ve got bad news for you,” I told him. “What happened?” I paused. ”Don’t get too angry.” He looked at me questioningly. “Sinks are clogged again?” “No, no,” I assured him. “Did something break? Did someone get hurt?” I shook my head. “So what is it?” “I lost ten dollars.” I dared to look up at him for a moment. He let out his breath. “Oh, baruch Hashem, that’s it. You had me scared for a moment.” I smiled to myself. The tactic worked. This “trick” played itself out recently on a larger scale, but this time with me on the receiving end. After my third child was born, I waited eagerly for the moment when his gaze would shift from staring at the lights to looking directly into my eyes — that’s when Eli would show me a miraculous spark of intelligence, of social

awareness, and most importantly, of sight. I waited three weeks, then four. At six weeks he began to smile, but I was anxious for him to smile and to gaze at me. “Sometimes it takes until three months,” my mother assured me when after two months Eli still wasn’t focusing. But I knew something was wrong. I took him for his regular well-check visit at two and a half months, and Nurse Linda spent a long time slowly passing a paper in front of Eli’s face. I hovered nearby, hoping to be assured, but certain my concern was about to be validated. Eventually, Linda put the paper down. She clapped her hands, loudly and sharply. My baby jumped. “Well.” Linda laughed uncomfortably. “He can definitely hear.” I smiled, but my insides twisted painfully. Then Linda looked at me intensely. “I’m not a doctor; I can only advise you. You need to follow up on this. Take him to a pediatric eye doctor as soon as you can.” She tapped her nails on the wooden desk. “He doesn’t need to focus at two months, but he should definitely be following a paper with his eyes.” During supper that evening, my husband and I desperately swung the small bear and monkey hanging on Eli’s baby chair in front of his eyes. Our baby smiled and gurgled, but looked everywhere except toward our dancing creatures. To us it was clear: He couldn’t see. AT THE specialist’s office, we waited and waited and waited some more. I spent the time observing the other patients playing with the wide variety of toys in the waiting room. Most had glasses. I secretly decided which colors and styles I liked the most. Finally we were called into a room where we met with the doctor’s assistant. “What brings you here?” she asked. I briefly explained that although Eli gazed at light, he couldn’t focus or seem to be able to see anything else at all. The optician picked up Eli and held him with outstretched arms, cooing to him. Then she observed him while Eli sat on my lap and asked us a few more questions. Finally, she took a pad of paper and scrawled a few words. I noticed, among others, “nystagmus” and “albinism.” When I had spoken to my regular pediatrician, he had mentioned the possibility of nystagmus, though I didn’t know anything about the condition. I had also
heard of albinism, but I was sure that the condition involved extremely pale hair and skin. What on earth could that have to do with my son’s eyes? The assistant called in the eye doctor and spoke to her briefly. Listening, Dr. Miller nodded rapidly. “Let me take a look through the slit-lamp machine. Then we’ll know for sure.” We were ushered into the second office. Eli was not impressed with the examination, declaring in piercing shrieks that he did not appreciate having his head held at such a tight and awkward angle. Dr. Miller worked quickly, evidently pleased with what she was seeing. She squeezed drops into Eli’s eyes and told us we’d be called back about twenty minutes later. “But what’s the problem with him?” I couldn’t help blurt out. “Can he see anything at all?” The doctor smiled. “I’m 95 percent sure of my diagnosis, but I want to be 100 percent clear of the whole picture and see his eyes after they’ve been dilated before I tell you.” The waiting room was packed, and while we waited, Eli finally fell asleep. Please let him be able to see, I prayed silently. Finally, our name was called. Back in the exam room, Dr. Miller looked briefly into Eli’s eyes and then sat comfortably into her chair, ready, it seemed, to give a lecture. “It seems your son has what is called albinism,” she informed us. “Albinism?” I asked doubtfully. “Yes, albinism. Most people have heard of it — the condition means partial or complete loss of pigmentation, which causes very pale skin and light eyes. “Because pigmentation continues to increase from birth onward, sight, in this case, improves with time. Right now he can probably hardly see anything, but give him three, four months, and things will change drastically. The range of severity is huge, but people with albinism can live normal, healthy and happy lives.” What a relief! What a blessing! Our baby could see and would see! Yes, his hair and skin color may be unnaturally light. Yes, he would possibly struggle slightly more than other children. And yes, this was a genetic condition, which meant it was possible we would have to contend with this in future children, too. But he could see! When Eli was six months old, he was prescribed glasses for his long-sightedness and crossed eyes. A wise acquaintance, whose son also has nystagmus, told me something that I will try my best never to forget: Every child has many obstacles to contend with while growing up. This is just one more, and as long as we view our children as 100 percent normal and inject them with the confidence to feel 100 percent normal, b’ezras Hashem, they will be. The fear I felt before the diagnosis was the catalyst for my gratitude upon receiving it. What we thought could be, wasn’t, and what it was, could’ve been worse. And when my spunky Eli, at three years old, recognized numbers one to ten in digit form without much effort, it deepened my appreciation for sticky hands and cheeky smiles, for mess and endless demands, for the beauty of life and the miracles we merit to live through every single moment.

The clock ticked past midnight, but it was like the middle of the day. The room was full of people: gaonim, talmidei chachamim and businessmen. Learned men with their seforim sat alongside villagers who came to share their everyday troubles. They came with their worries and problems, to receive brachos for success; everyone was waiting for an audience with the holy Rav, Reb Aharon Rokeach of Belz, zy”a. The Rav’s days were consecrated for intense immersion in Torah, tefillah and avodas Hashem. Food did not come onto the table at all; the Rav fasted all day. Only after Maariv would the Rav swallow but morsels of light food as his weakened body could not tolerate anything more. Then the people would begin streaming in. Reb Aharon was sought after by the masses, numbering in the thousands — both Belzer chassidim and the general public of European Jewry.

The Rav welcomed people straight through the night. By the time the last person in the line was escorted out, the Rav was ready to begin preparations for Shacharis. There was no time to even dream of going to sleep! The Rav transcended time and nature. The borders of day and night were blurred in one deep demonstration of kedushah, taharah and avodas Hashem. Davening took place at all hours, and the tisch was conducted until the wee hours of the morning.
Overview Reb Aharon Rokeach was born in Belz, Galicia, in 1880, to his father Reb Yissachar Dov of Belz. He was orphaned from his mother at a young age. In 1898, he married his niece. When his father passed away in 1927, Reb Aharon became Rav of Belz. With great nissim, Reb Aharon escaped Europe during World War II, but lost his wife, children and thousands of chassidim. Arriving in Eretz Yisroel on 9 Shevat, 1944, Reb Aharon set up the Belzer court in Tel Aviv. He was niftar on 21 Av, 1957, without leaving behind any children, and was laid to rest on Har Hamenuchos.
Reb Aharon had no connection with Olam Hazeh, so removed was he from gashmiyus. In fact, a famous rebbe at the time rhetorically asked, “How is it that Reb Aharon knows how to answer simple questions about daily life and business matters? He is completely removed from this world!” The rebbe then answered his own question, “Sometimes when you stand outside, you have a better view of what is happening inside.” So it was with the Belzer Rav. Though he himself lived on a level akin to that of a malach, he never expected that of anyone around him and was never too removed to understand the mundane issues of a simple Yid. He carried the burden of Klal Yisroel on his fragile shoulders, suffering along with them and for them. Those living closely with him knew and understood that the affliction that he self-imposed on his body was not simply an expression of his personal pain — it was the suffering for an entire generation.
SPARKLING CHARACTER Such utter kedushah is not cultivated in a day. From his youth, the Rav performed mitzvos with care, precision and temimus. One Pesach, when Reb Aharon was a young child, his father, Reb Yissachar Dov, made many changes throughout the Seder. He wanted his

son to ask about them, but to his wonder, Reb Aharon did not question anything. When Reb Aharon was finally asked about this, he answered simply, “I don’t have any questions on my holy father.” One winter, when Reb Aharon was sick, his doctor forbade him from immersing in a mikvah. Knowing full well that his son would have difficulty following doctor’s orders, his father, Reb Yissachar Dov, instructed him not to toivel in the mikvah. However, a brother-inlaw noticed Reb Aharon going to the mikvah at 3 a.m., in the freezing cold, and returning fifteen minutes later. Astounded that Reb Aharon could disregard his father’s instructions, the brother-in-law hid in the mikvah building one morning. Sure enough, Reb Aharon arrived. He undressed and took the steps to the mikvah. On the last step, he stopped and said, “Hareini muchan u’mezuman… to perform the mitzvah that my father commanded me not to toivel in the mikvah…” He then got dressed again and returned home, without having entered the water. The witness repeated what he had seen to Reb Yissachar Dov, who responded, “This is perfect temimus!” His meticulousness carried over to his conduct bein adam l’chaveiro as well. Always careful to think only positive of Yidden, the Rav called a mechallel Shabbos, “one who forgot
love to these Yidden, the Rav responded, “If you have a ‘harber Rambam,’ you work hard to answer it. It is the same with a ‘harber Yid’; you need to work hard to appease him.”
ESCAPING THE INFERNO
In 1929, the Rav decided to travel to an eye doctor in Berlin. Though the Rav had issues with his eyes, it was puzzling that he’d travel such a long distance, as appropriate medical care was available in Poland. After seeing the doctor, the Rav announced that he wished to con-

the ikkar of Shabbos,” and said about one who did not put tefillin, “He doesn’t put on tefillin d’Rabbeinu Tam.” The Rav’s ahavas Yisroel was legendary. Many broken individuals were drawn to his court. When he was asked how he could show such

tinue his rest in Baad-Hamburg. In Baad-Hamburg, the Rav pointed out a specific hotel, and they took out a room. Most of the day, for hours on end, the Rav stood by the window, deeply immersed in thought. Four weeks
passed in this manner. Finally, the Rav instructed that their bags be packed for a return home. “Ich hub gemeint ich vell eppes oiftuhn,” he said with a krechtz. The true purpose of this “vacation” was obvious when it later became known that directly opposite the hotel was the office of the upcoming Fuhrer, Hitler, ym”sh, who came to power four years later. War broke out ten years after the incident, in September of 1939. The Yomim Nora’im passed uneventfully in Belz, though the Germans were scheduled to come to Belz Shemini Atzeres in the morning. On Shemini Atzeres night, the last hakafos in Belz took place. Despite the rush, the Rav made sure that every niggun and every minhag be carried out as usual. The Rav managed to escape to the other side of the border, first to Skul and later to Premishlan, which were under Russian rule. The Belzer hoif moved along with its Rav, and chassidim as well as others traveled to be with him as they always had. However, subject to communist rule, life became harder. In Sivan of 1941, Germany invaded Russia. The Yidden situated in former Eastern Poland were tormented far more than those in Western Poland, which was occupied by Germany from the start of the war. Reb Moshe’le, zt”l, the prized, oldest son of the Rav, was caught on 9 Tammuz and burned alive in the

beis midrash. The Rav reacted with unequivocal emunah, commenting, “Ah chesed fuhn Borei, ich hub oich tzishteier gegeben a korban.” (It’s a kindness from the Creator that I was also able to contribute with an offering.) Chassidim in Western Poland, among them Reb Chaim Shlomo Friedman, who was highly instrumental in saving the Rav, worked to bring the Rav over. They gathered astronomical funds and hired a Pole to smuggle the Rav over the border. The Rav selected his brother, the Bilgorayer Rav, to join him. They needed to pass the former divide between Russian and German reign, an especially perilous border. The Polish smuggler advised them to daven, and he later said that all the guards had been asleep as they passed! Driving further, their car suddenly turned over. Miraculously, the passengers extracted themselves from the car, and as soon as they were out, the car burst into flames. Though they were safe off to the side, the Rav and his companions were wounded and bloody. In another miraculous twist, a Jewish wagon driver soon passed. He agreed to take them to a nearby Jewish inn where they were given the stall to sleep in. The Rav did not reveal his identity, but the following morning they were recognized. The news spread throughout town: The Belzer Rav was there!

One Belzer chassid asked the doctor for the coin, saying, “You aren’t a chassid anyway, and probably don’t believe in the coin…” But the doctor refused to relinquish the blessed coin. Indeed, the doctor survived the war and attributed his salvation to the shemirah of the Belzer Rav. From there, the Rav traveled to Vishnitsa, a small town that had until then been “overlooked” by the Germans. He was later moved to the Bochnia and Krakow ghettos. In Krakow, there was a Jewish cop who instilled terrible fear in the Yidden. Striding around with a revolver, he was known for killing and reporting Yidden to the Gestapo. Just hearing the name Sputz caused a Yid to tremble. The Rav asked for Sputz to be called to him. For “Which person in the entire this alone, one could be world is able to reach the level of killed. on fire, and the Rav was told that they must escape. The Rav wouldn’t hear of it, and began to prepare for tzinding as usual, making sure to sing all the zemiros. Even though only two Yidden were present, the Rav called out prior to tzinding, “Nisht shtippen.” The Bilgorayer Rav later explained that the Rav must have been talking to malachim, not people. Only after they finished, when many homes around them were ablaze, did the Rav agree that they must run away. Numerous plans were made to smuggle the Rav into Hungary. Finally, a high-level Hungarian officer was hired to bring the Rav over the border. The first part of the operation was to smuggle the Rav out of the ghetto, since the ghetto inhabitants would do everything in their power to stop the Rav from leaving. It took two days for the Hungarian official to fetch them from the home where they were staying outside the ghetto. In the meantime, it was imperative that no one discover that the Rav had disappeared from the ghetto, or the Gestapo would begin a search. Reb Reuven Wulkan played rebbe and Reb Chaim Shlomo gabbai. Sitting on the Rav’s seat wrapped in a tallis, Wulkan accepted the kvitlach brought to him. This act went on for 35 hours! The trip was one long trail of nissim. Dressed in fine clothes, the Rav and his entourage passed themselves off as retired Hungarian of-

ficers who were wanted back in Hungary. The scheme could easily have been foiled, as the socalled Hungarian officers could not even speak Hungarian! At one point, while driving on a busy street, the car broke down, and the driver could not repair it. They were soon discovered by an old man with a belt loaded with tools, who quickly resolved the issue. The Sadigura Rebbe later commented that this “old man” was surely Eliyahu Hanavi, about whom we say in the zemiros of Motzei Shabbos, “Ish… chagur b’masnov” (secured with a belt). The driver said that he once left the car, and when he returned, he couldn’t see it. It was as if a cloud was surrounding it, shielding it from view. At the border, the guards deliberated if the papers were valid, but ultimately let the group through. The Rav settled in Pest. While there, the Rav lived in four different houses, each one situated in a different corner of the ghetto. This ghetto was of the only ones to remain unliquidated, with more than 100,000 Yidden having been saved within. The Rav’s shifting residences likely attributed to this shemirah.

The Rav traveled via Romania, Bulgaria and then Turkey to get to Eretz Yisroel. Throughout his travels, the Rav made a great impact on the local Yidden at every stop, who yearned to see his countenance and hung on to his every word. During this difficult time for Klal Yisroel, his very presence was an inspiration. At the very top of Germany’s “Most Wanted” list, the Belzer Rav’s picture appeared in the center of a star symbol that contained various “rabbiners” in each point. However, the Yad Hashem followed the Rav throughout years of miraculous hatzalah. Despite having lost his wife, children and a

large court of chassidim, the Rav remained unbroken, always happy. Once, a Holocaust survivor who had lost his entire family during the war came to the Rav, thinking that the Rav would certainly commiserate with his pain, having been through the same himself. To his surprise, the Belzer Rav countered, “Chas v’shalom! Hakadosh Baruch Hu never did anything bad to me, only good! Never, never did He do bad to me!” When the Rav was sitting shivah for his brother, the Bilgorayer Rav, the Beis Yisroel of Gur came to be menachem avel. Before leaving, the Beis Yisroel said, “We should never know more tza’ar.” The Rav responded, “Chas v’shalom, chas v’shalom! I never knew of tza’ar!”
A LOSS FOR ALL The Rav was revered as a symbol of holiness and leadership by an entire generation. When the news of his passing, on Motzei Shabbos, 21 Av, became known, gedolim and simple Yidden cried as one. Everyone felt the loss on a personal level. Along with the expressions of deep mourning that rang throughout all corners of Yiddishkeit came the comforting thought that this pure malach Elokim continues to be melamed zechus on Klal Yisroel from his exalted spot above. As a journalist wrote shortly after the petirah, “Alone and orphaned remain not only the Belzer chassidim, but every Yid… All saw and understood that this was a pillar of fire, a heavenly meteor around which the entire world found comfort and hope during all her difficult moments…”

How may one clean dusty furniture on Shabbos? So you’re having guests for Shabbos morning, and the extra chairs are in the basement — but they’re all dusty. Are you allowed to clean them on Shabbos? The melacha of melabein applies differently to various materials. If the chair has a cloth cushion, then one may neither wet, scrub nor dust it.1 If the chair has a covering on it made of a non-absorbent soft material like nylon, see the question below. If it is made of hard plastic or wood then it is muttar to get rid of the dust by rubbing the surface with a dry rag or even by wetting and then scrubbing it.2 This is because dirt on such a kind of surface is not absorbed, but rather simply lies on top, so cleaning it is not melabein. However, one must be wary of two things when cleaning it off: First, one may not squeeze out the water from the rag he is using.3 This would mean that one may not first wet the rag before using it. Instead, one should put water on the chair (or table, etc.) and then scrub it gently with a towel in a way that water will not be squeezed out.4 If the towel is so wet that water will drip out of it even when scrubbing gently, it is assur to scrub with it at all. If the towel is even wetter, and water will drip out of it even when merely handling it, then it is assur to even move it. Second, the cloth that one uses has to be a rag that is designated for cleaning.5 The poskim say that napkins and the like are also muttar, but one must make sure to use enough in proportion to the size of the spill so that he won’t squeeze out water as he rubs.
How may one clean off plastic couch coverings, plastic tablecloths, leather and rubber shoes, plastic raincoats, etc.? Some families buy leather couches or cover their furniture with nylon, because they have kids who constantly climb up on them and get them dirty. But can these precautionary measures help on Shabbos? Soft, non-absorbent materials (such as leather or rubber shoes, plastic raincoats, plastic tablecloths, etc.6) are not halachically treated like cloth or hard materials. Instead, they are somewhere in the middle, and the halacha says that, unlike cloth, one is allowed to wet them, but unlike hard materials, one may not scrub them.7 The poskim point out that it is assur to put cleaning detergent on these items, even if one will not scrub them, since the detergent itself performs the job of scrubbing.8 Similarly applying water with pressure on these surfaces will also be assur because the pressure of the water also performs the job of scrubbing. So one may clean soft non-absorbent materials by wiping them gently with a dry rag or by wetting the chair and gently, without scrubbing, removing the water using a napkin or rag (following the conditions above regarding

not squeezing out the water, and using a rag set aside for cleaning).9 However, one must be careful not to put water on parts that have threads of stitching because they are considered like cloth, and one may not wet them at all. So, yes, when the cousins come visiting, and suddenly the amount of feet triple, and the couch turns into a trampoline — if you have a nylon-covered couch, you can do some damage control on Shabbos. The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.
Shaking is assur only if one is makpid (see Orach Chaim 302:1 Biur Halacha “Aleha”) but scrubbing is always assur according to the Mishnah Berurah 302:6 and Biur Halacha “Yesh omrim dassur lenaer.”

We’ve read all about safety and ethics in the wilderness over the past few weeks, and now we’re ready for a hike. In this article we’ll go over some beginner and intermediate hiking trails in the area, and provide you with some important pre-plan information. Many parks around populated areas offer volunteer-maintained trails in the woods for your hiking pleasure. In our area, much of the work was done at Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. They blazed trails, built shelters and campgrounds, and even dug some of the “seven lakes” that gave the famous road its name. The combined parks boast 50,000+ acres of mountains, lakes, forest and a labyrinth of no less than 225 miles of hiking trails — which is now maintained by the New York–New Jersey Trail Conference and its volunteers (including COMMSAR). That is a lot of miles of forested highways where earth replaces asphalt, honking is replaced by chirping songbirds and the smell of nature rules over industrial pollution. The size, terrain and varied landmarks of the combined state parks offer many choices to suit your level of bravery, shoe size, scenic appetite, comfort level or just mood.
HIKING TRAILS Just like street signs, you can stroll safely in the woods by following each trails’ unique blazes. All maintained hiking trails are clearly marked with its distinct color on trees along the trail. Trail marks are generally spaced within view of one another. A set of two trail-blazes, one above the other, indicates a turn. When the top marker is to the right, it indicates a right turn, and the opposite for left. Three markers indicate the beginning or end of a trail (see illustration). If you lose the trail, backtrack! Don’t go deeper. Summer ’18 PSAR (Preventative Search & Rescue) Campaign by COMMSAR
TRAILS MAPS In addition to having directions to your trailhead and knowing the color of your intended trail(s), you should never venture into the woods without a trail

map. If you intend on taking the red trail to the yellow trail, but now see a blue trail or an unmarked woodsroad, a quick look at your map may help you orient yourself. While topography map reading may require some skill, it can still be used by beginners. Trail maps in our area are published by the aforementioned NY–NJ Trail Conference. Trail maps are available for purchase at the Visitor Center and Bookstore between Exits 16 and 17 on the Palisades Parkway
1. KAKIAT OLD MILL LOOP This hike is shy of 1 mile and is a favorite of kids. Kakiat Park also has a ball field and a roofed picnic area. From the trailhead (at the “gazebo”), take the blue trail, which loops around and merges with the white trail. Continue on white and exit on the main woods-road a few feet from original starting point. Approximately a 12-minute drive from Monsey
or at outdoor outfitter shops. Another option is having the trail maps loaded on your phone and using the GPS function to see your actual location on the map.
EASY HIKES FOR BEGINNERS Below are several easy hikes that can be enjoyed by anyone in the family. For the most part, these hikes are in populated hiking areas.
2. SILVERMINE LAKE/ HARRIMAN STATE PARK For an authentic picturesque “in the woods” experience without constantly referring to your trail map, Silvermine Lake is what the doctor ordered (especially during the fall foliage season). Take the unmarked trail from the parking lot (off 7 Lakes Drive) and follow it as it hugs the lake. Turn around at any point or when reaching the dam. Please note that there is a seasonal parking fee. Approximately a 30-minute drive from Monsey
3. STERLING FOREST STATE PARK This 1-mile easy hike also affords you a visit to the Lautenberg Visitor Center where you can learn all about the flora and fauna of the area you are hiking in. It is a great place for kids. From the visitor center (116 Old Forge Road, Tuxedo, NY 10987) take the blue trail toward the Sterling Furnace. Then turn onto the yellow trail, which loops around back to the original blue trail, and then back to the starting point. Approximately a 30-minute drive from Monsey
4. FORT MONTGOMERY/BEAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK The museum at this site lets you taste a piece of this region’s history. This was the scene of a fierce Revolutionary War battle for control of the Hudson River. (Throughout the summer there are also programs in regional history and the way people lived.) From the museum (690 US-9W, Fort Montgomery, NY 10922) take the blue Twin Fort trail for 0.4 miles to Fort Clinton and then back. This short trail traverses a suspension bridge over the Popolopen Creek, and under the Bear Mountain Bridge. Approximately a 35-minute drive from Monsey

5. TOM JONES MOUNTAIN LOOP/HARRIMAN STATE PARK While this loop has a short uphill section, it is relatively mild. The entire hike is less than a mile long in the woods, but has another half-mile walk on the road. It’s a worthwhile hike as you can get to experience a mountaintop and a shelter within a short distance. On Rte. 106 (Kanawauke Road) there are two roadside pull-off parking areas on either side of the road west of Little Long Pond. Park at the first one, closer to the Kanawauke Circle (off 7 Lakes Drive). Take the red trail and follow it down after the shelter. At the fork take the blue trail out to the road. Turn right on the road and follow it for about 0.5 mile to the first parking lot. Approximately a 30-minute drive from Monsey
6. BEAR MOUNTAIN SUMMIT LOOP If you’ve always felt guilty driving up Perkins Memorial Drive rather than hiking it, you can alleviate some of those feelings by taking a hike on the summit, rather than to the summit. At the summit (Perkins Memorial Dr, Stony Point, NY 10980), look for the Appalachian Trail trailhead (from the road right before the parking lot). You’ll notice the blue trail shortly after your start — that is your return route. Stick to the white AT trail until you loop back to the blue to complete this 1-mile hike. NOTE: this section of the white trail is wheelchair/baby carriage accessible! Approximately a 35-minute drive from Monsey

Hike the hills and valleys of this 4,000-acre reservation using marked trails that lead to ponds, a waterfall and stunning views. Whether you’d like to hike part of a trail and backtrack, or hike the entire reservation, start at the yellow trail behind the kiosk at the left side of the parking lot. Walking alongside the first part of the yellow trail, you’ll see Scarlet Oak Pond on your right, where you can stop for views of the water. At the end of the pond, take the yellow trail where it diverges to the left, and it’ll lead you to the falls. You can actually step off the path there and get close to the falls. You can either backtrack from here, or continue further up the yellow path until the MacMillan Reservoir for beautiful views, or follow the rest of the Vista Loop, which is a moderate 4-mile hike and takes about 2.5 hours. If completing that loop, make stops at the various spots with panoramic views (marked with a star on the map). See a map of the reservation in the previous article, “Intro to Hiking and Trail Basics.”

results in vision that can only perceive different shades of gray, or the ability to see only in only one hue, which offers no color comparison and therefore no perception of varying colors. Some famous people with impaired color vision are Bill Clinton, Mark Zuckerberg and England’s Prince William. Mark Twain, as well, was known to always joke about his lack of color perception, which also referred to his views against slavery and prejudice, which were radical at the time. Contrary to accepted belief, the term “color blindness” is inaccurate. Rather, most people who are known to be color blind actually suffer from color vision deficiency, which means that they can’t see certain colors due to a condition affecting one of the three sets (green, red and blue) of color-sensing cones in the eye. Most people with impaired color vision either suffer from red-green color blindness (protanopia or deuteranopia) or blue-yellow color blindness (tritanopia). Red-green color blindness is the most common form of color vision deficiency. This condition is genetic and affects many more males than females. Which is lucky! Men aren’t judged so fast for a complete lack of color perception. Total color blindness is very rare and is either a result of no color perception at all, which

One of the more popular color vision tests, called the Ishihara test after Dr. Shinobu Ishihara, a Japanese ophthalmologist who developed it in 1917, works with a series of plates designed to test red-green color vision. Each plate has a circle filled with dots of random sizes and specific colors, ISHIHARA COLOR TEST PLATE with contrasting dots forming a shape or figure. Some plates have a figure that is invisible to those with red-green color blindness, while other plates have a figure that is visible only to those with red-green color blindness.
WHAT COLOR IS THIS? Moderate color vision deficiency is usually more of an inconvenience than a handicap. One person who suffers from red-green color blindness complained that he can’t distinguish between pea soup and tomato soup, and another said that his brown hair may as well be green… A third person suffering from red-green color blindness was often seen wearing rather ugly brown shirts, because, as he explained, “It’s a color I can see!” But as most people with impaired color vision will tell you, the most annoying question they get from their friends is: “What color is this?” The inability to distinguish between colors may become more of a nuisance when reading color-coded charts, decoding traffic lights when they’re not placed in their usual vertical position, or trying to decide whether meat is cooked through.... For children who have yet to be diagnosed, the inability to read educational material that is very often colorcoded sometimes means that they are mistakenly believed to be learningdisabled.
DEFICIENCY DANGERS In 1875, a horrific railway accident in Sweden that killed nine people was blamed on the color vision deficiency of the rail operator who mixed up signals. While this may or may not be true, it was the catalyst for change, and a color vision test was developed to ensure that no color blind person should be working on the railroad.
Similarly, in 2002, a Fedex Boeing 727 crashed upon landing in Tallahassee, Florida. The captain, first officer and flight engineer were seriously injured, and the plane was destroyed in the fire that followed. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash and blamed it on the captain’s and first officer’s fatigue, the captain’s and engineer’s failure to monitor the approach, and… the first officer’s color vision deficiency. It turned out that the runway they were approaching had a series of lights that would indicate, by flashing either white or red, whether they were gliding too high or too low toward the runway. The board found that the first officer, who was the flying pilot, had a history of impaired color vision and could have easily confused the white and red lights. These accidents are the reason Romania and Turkey do not allow people suffering from color vision deficiency to get a driver’s license. They fear these drivers would misread traffic signals, and thus cause accidents while driving. In certain professions, as well, applicants are tested for color blindness. Besides for rail operators and pilots, where color blindness is a safety concern, a person hired to mix paint colors and electricians who have to tell colored wires apart also, for practical reasons, need to have good color vision.

A Place For Yeshuos A baby is born, in the merit of the Satmar Rebbe
One wintry Friday morning, a year and a half ago, a childless couple was on their way to the Catskills for Shabbos. As they passed Kiryas Yoel in Monroe, the husband turned to his wife with a suggestion. Perhaps they should make a stop at the gravesite of the Satmar Rebbe? They were not Satmar Chassidim, but they had heard enough about the Rebbe zt”l to know that he had dedicated his life to helping Jews from all walks of life. Perhaps this was where their yeshua was meant to come from, in the merit of the tzaddik? The couple drove up to the cemetery and walked up to the Rebbe’s ohel, their hearts full of hope and prayer. He stood on the men’s side, while she entered the women’s area. As it happened, and we know that nothing happens by coincidence, they arrived during the morning hours, when the Tehillim Kollel, consisting of a minyan of serious bnei Torah, gathers to recite sefer Tehillim from beginning to end, in fervent concentration, on a daily basis. Husband and wife sensed that this must be a time of special divine mercy, that the gates of heaven were now open to receiving their pleas for a child of their own.
They joined the Tehillim Kollel in recitation of the entire tehillim, over the course of two incredibly inspiring hours. Later, as they made their way back to the car, exhausted but elevated, the wife wondered aloud whether this was a day with special meaning in the Satmar Chassidus, considering that a group of chashuve bnei Torah had just appeared for such an intense prayer session. Her husband, who had already made the acquaintance of the dedicated members of the minyan, smiled as he informed her that this was a daily occurrence. Hashem had led them to the right place at the right time, and the next step was obvious to both of them. They contacted the Tehillim Kollel offices to sign up as members, to have their names recited in fervent supplication during the daily tehillim minyan at the tzion. Indeed, their “coincidental” stop on that Friday morning proved to be the seeds from which sprouted their salvation. The Tehillim Kollel continued to daven for them every day, and within a year, husband and wife became the proud, immensely grateful parents of a beautiful baby boy.
The Satmar Rebbe’s gravesite is a place where many come to pray for yeshuos. Tehillim Kollel has a regular minyan of Bnei Torah reciting the entire sefer Tehillim at the tzion on a daily basis. A ranch with a cross-gabled roof
A ranch with a hip roof
Ranch-style homes, also called ramblers or California ranches, are an art form unique to America (though this style has its roots in Spanish colonial architecture seen on southwestern ranches and in Mexico — hence its name). The first ranch-style homes were built in the 1930s, and with their wide, open floor plan for an informal, casual living style, were a major change from other architecture that was common at that time. The exterior, as well, stood out for its plainness; no dormer windows, steep roofs, porches or columns. Very popular among the post-war middle class, this style began to spread across the U.S. between the 1940s and 1970s when land was cheap in the sprawling suburbs. Its popularity waned in late 20th century, when there was a return to historical and traditional style homes.

FYI: A ranch with a basement is not considered a raised ranch. For a house to be classified as such, there must be a flight of steps to get to the main living floor.

ATTRIBUTES: Ranches are asymmetrical single-story houses, their most telling distinctive characteristics being low-pitch roofs and deep, overhanging eaves. The shape of the house is either rectangular or has an L or U shape. Ranches usually have an attached garage and a large picture window facing the street. Other characteristics, of which most ranches include at least a few, are a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams, a roof that is either side-gabled, cross-gabled or hip, windows with large panes of glass, and sliding glass doors leading to a patio. The interiors are simple (often rustic, too) and the floor plan is open and casual, the living area separate from the bedroom area. The exterior of original ranches are also non-ornamental, often made of a combination of two materials. Ranches are built close to the ground, many of them a single main level on a concrete slab, while others have a crawl space and basement between the foundation and main level.
PROS: No steps means an ideal home for toddlers, the elderly and anyone with mobility issues. The fact that ranches are often on-ground, in a L or U shape, and with sliding doors out to the patio makes them conducive to comfortable outdoorindoor living. CONS: The ranch requires more land, being that the entire living area is spread over a single level. Heating a ranch is also expensive, as a single floor doesn’t handle natural heat loss as well as a multi-story home, made worse by the facts that some spots in this longer home are far away from the central heating system and that heat is lost through the foundation, which literally matches the square footage of the living area. The large window panes are another factor that make the home less energy-efficient.
