CLARIFYING A CONDITION (Re: No More Groping in the Dark, Issue 159) Thank you to The Monsey View for bringing awareness about visual impairments and especially Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). CVI is the leading cause of blindness in the U.S., but doctors are still treating it as an ocular blindness, which it is not. I cannot even count how many times people have asked me about my son, “What does that mean — his eyes are healthy but he can’t see?” There is a support group for parents of children with CVI that has been extremely helpful. I can be contacted through The Monsey View. A CVI Mommy

Being the mother of a visually impaired child, I was so happy to see vision as the feature topic this week. There’s one thing I’d like to add. My child is blind, not deaf. There is no need to talk way louder to her than you would talk to me. It is degrading to her and to the rest of the family. Anonymous

When I read the article about a baby being diagnosed with nystagmus, I felt like I was reading a story I had written. I am so grateful that you printed this story. Fraidy N.

The beautiful story by B. Cohen is extremely similar to my son’s story. Baruch Hashem, my son is now able to read and is even learning Chumash! I’d like to share a poem that I wrote during our saga. I can be contacted through The Monsey View. My cherished baby How I yearn To peek out of your eyes For a fleeting moment.

What can you see? Are you able to observe the faces Of those who adore you? Will you ever fully experience The sky brightening up a day, How radiantly the sun shines When its rays rest upon your cheeks? Will you yet behold A majestic sunset A breathtaking waterfall A scarlet rose? Or is the doctors’ diagnosis true? Are walls of oppressive blackness Surrounding you, G-d forbid? Are shades of gray merging With blurriness before you? Rivers of despair Mingled with hope. Can you discern them in my eyes As I caress your cherubic face And embrace you oh-so-tight, My angelic bundle of joy? We’ll prove the doctors wrong They will yet perceive Who is truly in control Of your vision, little one. Your pure and holy eyes Windows to your untainted soul, Meticulously, I sheltered them From impure sights. They will yet pour over the Gemara. We trust in Hashem, We’ll fortify our bitachon During this excruciatingly trying period While we wait for test results.

RE: FINALLY A REMEDY (Inbox, Issue 157) I’d like to thank Ruchy Reese and her Skin Healing Gemach for her help and guidance when my daughter had a severe poison ivy reaction on her face. Knowing the dangers of cortisone creams, we wanted to avoid them at all costs. Thanks to a letter-writer in your Inbox, we received information about a skin wash called Zanfel. It is pricey, at $40 for a small tube, but worth every penny. It provided instant itch-/burn-relief that lasted a few hours until the next wash. Zanfel is available at most pharmacies. D.R.

PROTECT THEIR HEADS While the summer weather is so inviting and all of our children are riding their bikes outside, I want to remind everyone about the importance of wearing a helmet. Even the most experienced riders can get hurt; that’s what happened with my nephew. At 16 years old, he’s an experienced bike rider, but one day last week, he hit a bump or a stick or something else and flipped over the handlebars. He landed on his head and totally demolished his helmet. His head? Well, let’s just say it’s a miracle he’s still alive. Parents, don’t let your kids ride without a helmet, even when “it’s just up and down the sidewalk,” because accidents can happen there as well! Wishing everyone a healthy summer and a beautiful new year. A Worried Mother

RE: BACK-TO-SCHOOL BRAINSTORM (Inbox, Issue 159) Providing my young students with school supplies/folders/notebooks is exactly what I do at the start of the school year. The (lower elementary– grade) children in the school where I teach are sent home with a letter of introduction and a request for a certain amount of school supply money; the letter clearly states what the children will be receiving and how we will deal with the loss of any of the objects. Although each child receives the exact same type of item, I do try to vary the designs, colors and patterns. Individuality is a wonderful thing, but left to their own devices, many children would tote their entire eraser collection to school and forget about the single pencil, or would proudly display a box full of cartoon character–topped pencils with-

out a sharpener. It would also be to the children’s benefit if the teacher could provide the students with briefcases, but parents prefer to choose their own according to their tastes and/or budgets. Unfortunately, some briefcases are outworn hand-me-downs, may have inappropriate pictures (for that particular school), will be as large as a valise (sporting wheels!) or may be too tiny for even an 8x10-inch paper. For a teacher with several classes of students, gathering supplies is a time-consuming task. But the effort definitely deserves an “A-plus” for an efficient start of the new school year. R.S.

(Re: Shaarei Yerushalayim, Issue 158; Moshiach’s Ancestry, Inbox, Issue 159) In the feature on the gates of Yerushalayim, you wrote about Sultan Suleiman blocking off Shaar Harachamim and setting up a cemetery in front of it to prevent Moshiach, who the article said would descend from Kohanim, from entering. The following week, a letter-writer pointed out that Moshiach is a descendant of Malchus Beis Dovid and thus not a Kohen, to which the writer responded that the Sultan only thought he’d be a Kohen.

I’d like to make a correction. While the Muslims reputably blocked Shaar Harachamim to prevent Moshiach from entering, the large graveyard in front of the gate was meant to prevent Eliyahu Hanavi (who is a Kohen) from entering Har Habayis to proclaim Moshiach’s arrival. Yehuda M.

As we approach the end of the summer, I am reminded of the past summer, when my eleventhgrade daughter was a counselor at a local day camp. I know the parents paid a tidy sum for their daughters to attend, but we all know that the high-school counselors, who toil all summer to give our daughters an amazing time, are grossly underpaid. Thank you so much to the parents who so generously tipped my daughter to show appreciation. However, there are many who can’t afford to do so, which is totally understandable. When I was considering to send a five-dollar tip to my child’s counselors, I was told it was “nebby,” and that it’s so much classier to send a food gift. And, probably since mothers around Monsey received the same advice, I watched my daughter unpack the many tokens of appreciation in the form of danishes, chocolate bars, cappuccinos, etc. Just imagine if each of these would’ve been a five-dollar bill (the food most probably did not cost any less!); it would have easily amounted to $50, making the tips she earned so much more substantial. So let’s get together and send “nebby” tips instead of no tips to show our appreciation to these wonderful counselors. S.G. Parshas Re’eh

By: Malka Schneps

“THIS IS INCREDIBLE!” shouted Chaya above the noise of the powerful jet. “I never get tired of flying!” Chaya’s husband Avi was a pilot, and he often brought his wife for a ride in the cockpit. “Maybe that’s why I never get tired of bringing you up with me.” Avi smiled. “Your excitement is contagious!” Chaya looked out the window for some time, enjoying the view from on high. After a while, she began to look around the cockpit with growing curiosity. “There’s one thing I don’t understand about this plane. Why are there so many buttons and indicators everywhere? Isn’t it enough to just turn the plane on and then steer?” “Every single one of these buttons and indicators does something important,” Avi explained. “It took me a very long time to learn what they all do and mean.” “But there are so many! Why should a plane need so many?” asked Chaya. “You’d be surprised!” “That one over there, for example,” said Chaya, pointing to one indicator. “Is it important?” “Extremely!” answered Avi. “Really? I find that hard to believe. I must have flown with you a hundred times, and I have never, not even once, seen you look at that one,” said Chaya emphatically. “That indicator,” explained Avi with a twinkle in his eye, “indicates when it is likely that the plane will stall, which is an emergency mid-flight. Baruch Hashem, so far, it has never yet indicated that something is about to go wrong, but it is most certainly important!” This world is such a complicated place. There are so many types of people, places and things that at times a person might feel lost, wondering what his place is. Each one of us can, at times, feel like a button that has never been pressed, one seemingly useless button lost among a myriad of other buttons. Do I really matter? Am I important? Is the world any different because I am here? Would the world have

78 / THE MONSEY VIEW

suffered if I were not here? Thankfully, there is a clear answer to these very normal questions and feelings, and the answer is a resounding YES. It says in this week’s parsha, “Re’eh anochi nosein lifneichem hayom bracha uklala — See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse” (Devarim 11:26). The Kli Yakar says that when Moshe Rabbeinu says, “Re’eh — See,” it is in the language of addressing an individual, while when Moshe says, “lifneichem — before you,” it is in the language of addressing a group. He goes on to explain that this is in keeping with what Chazal say, that a person should imagine that the world is equally balanced between mitzvos and aveiros. If he were to perform one mitzvah, it would tip the balance of the world to the side of mitzvos, whereas if he were to do the opposite, chas v’shalom, it would have the opposite effect. This is not just a flight of fancy for our imaginations. Each and every one of us has, in a very real sense, the world in our hands. We each have the power to tip the balance of the world for good. The choice is there before us at all times. A blessing or a curse? Good or bad? Life or death? Likewise, it says in Parshas Nitzavim, “I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life…” (Devarim 30:19). The Torah enjoins us, “Choose life.” It is a choice we must make ourselves. We must choose life and choose bracha; we must turn away from the curse and from death. Every choice we make, big or small, moves us toward one of these extremes. Make a bracha. Daven. Refrain from speaking unkindly about someone — or, especially, to someone. Give tzedakah. Give someone a ride. Look at the world around you, and you will see the power that you possess. A stone cannot move the balance of the world toward good or bad. A stick cannot help or hurt anyone on its own. A cloud has no bechirah and can make no impact on the world and its destiny. But you can. This is a gift and a treasure, and an awesome responsibility. Hashem has not given this gift to just anyone. He gave it to you. Use it wisely.

911 Emergency Texting Now Available in Rockland County Area residents who need help in an emergency situation now have another option available to them: sending a text to 911 from their cell phones. Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco announced the new service two weeks ago. While calling is typically easier and faster than texting, Rockland County residents can now text emergency calls to 911 from their cell phones, and residents are encouraged to “call if you can, text if you can’t.” Rockland is the first Hudson Valley county to adopt the system, reported The Journal News. “For people who find themselves in emergency situations in which they cannot pick up a phone and speak to

a 911 operator, but they can text, the availability of Text-to-911 could be the difference that helps save a life,” said Falco. The system may be a game-changer for those with speech or hearing disabilities. Those who find themselves in a situation where lives may be at risk or where a crime is being committed can text 911 by entering the numbers “911” in the “To” field of the text, followed by the exact address of the emergency and a very brief description of the situation. Texts to 911 cannot include pictures or videos and cannot be sent to more than one per-

son at a time. Text-to-911 works only on mobile phones that are within range of a local cell phone tower that has texting capabilities. The system is currently supported by Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and MetroPCS.

Ramapo PD Joins In Statewide Speeding Crackdown Police officers were out in force this past week with their ticket books in hand, looking for law-breakers as part of a statewide effort to enforce posted speed limits as a way of reducing fatal accidents on area roadways. The Town of Ramapo Police Department was one of many agencies to participate in the effort, which ran from August 1 through August 7.

In the days prior to the campaign, Officer Daniel Hyman of the Ramapo PD noted that no warnings would be given during the crackdown, which would focus specifically on known problem areas, reported FIOS-1. The National Highway Safety Traffic Safety Administration reported that over 9,500 people died in 2015 in accidents where speed was a factor, a fact that prompted the Ramapo PD to

take part in the statewide campaign. “Our officers in the Town of Ramapo have written 12,000 citations, and of those, over 2,300 were specifically for speeding,” said Hyman. “It’s something we take very seriously.” News agencies were warned of the campaign in advance, with a statement issued by the Ramapo PD advertising the “Obey the sign or pay the fine” speed enforcement blitz.

Mailbox Thieves Hit in Tallman When you drop your mail into any of the blue metal mailboxes that dot our area, you might assume that your letters or packages will arrive safely at their destination, but apparently one mail drop in our area has been targeted by mischief-makers.

84 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 8, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

The Ramapo Police Department issued an advisory saying that unknown suspects tampered with the mailbox located outside the Tallman Post Office approximately ten days ago. Anyone who mailed anything from that particular post office from July 28 until the morning of July 30

should make sure that their correspondence arrived safely at the intended destination. Tampering with a mailbox is a federal offense. The investigation is being handled by the United States Postal Police, which is being assisted by local authorities.

THE GREATER MONSEY community at large, and Hatzoloh in particular, was plunged into mourning by the passing of an individual of true chesed, a devoted community activist, a man with a heart that cared so much and hands that did endlessly, Reb Moishe Spilman, z”l. As a devoted volunteer of Hatzoloh EMS for many years, Reb Moishe, known to most as “Unit 39,” was instrumental in the saving of many lives and much progress in the Hatzoloh infrastructure. Reb Moishe was larger than life. He started his day at the crack of dawn and worked diligently until late at night, with unusual energy. He went beyond the call of duty, and then beyond even that, taking on many responsibilities in addition to responding to calls at Hatzoloh. He tackled every issue with exuberance that didn’t wane even after more than 20 years on the job. Reb Moishe was someone who got things done. Hatzoloh’s fleet of cutting-edge ambulances, fully stocked with the most upgraded medical equipment, is a direct credit to Reb Moishe. His attention to detail when specking out a new ambulance, his unwavering commitment to servicing the ambulances on a daily basis — his devotion was unreal. Reb Moishe lived and breathed Hatzoloh — doing, doing, and then doing some more. Setting up Hatzoloh’s state-of-the-art radio communications system was Reb Moishe’s personal project, one in which he invested all his heart. This new multi-million-dollar digital radio system required hundreds of hours of planning and implementation. Moishe did it almost single-handedly. The new system, flawlessly rolled out over a year ago, has provided exceptional coverage to the entire growing Hatzoloh-response area and can be directly attributed to many lives saved. In addition to these extraordinary projects, Reb Moishe was an excellent EMT who truly cared for each and every patient and their families. He went the extra mile (quite literally) to ensure that each patient got the care they needed wherever that may have been. Moishe was known to take calls on Erev Shabbos, even though it meant he’d arrive home after the zman. Moishe was also a dispatcher, taking shifts several times a week to ensure proper coverage. On top of all that, he was also a coordinator for several years and spent countless hours at meetings and on the scene ensuring that all the organization’s needs were met. Throughout his life, Moishe was extremely humble and refused any form of public acknowledgement for his amazing accomplishments. Reb Moishe leaves behind a gaping void that will be hard to fill. As was mentioned at his levayah, it will take ten people to replace Reb Moishe. And that is not an exaggeration. May Hashem comfort his family and the greater community, and may his memory be a blessing.

The one word holding you back from

losing weight is...

“Should.”

Algorithms tell the computer, “When 'X' happens you do 'Y'”

You know you should exercise. You know you should eat healthy. You tell yourself that every day. When you go to your doctor they tell you, “you should lose weight”. When you start a diet they tell you “You should be eating this. .You shouldn't be eating that.”

Doesn't this look oddly familiar? From this perspective, a meal plan looks like a piece of code you would put into a computer. At 8:00 eat this At 11:00 eat that At 1:00 do this At 4:00 do that

For a computer this would work wonders. All this does is reinforce the idea that you should be doing a lot of things. For You and I, who are far more complex than a computer, it isn't going to work for the long term. The real question is how many of the things that you know you should be doing are you actually We, humans, have another system. A system that doing? is more powerful than our rational one. If you are like most people your list of “shoulds” grows each and every year while your will to take action declines. Most people don't do the things they “should” be doing. They do the things that they want/need to do.

In fact, if this system isn't kept in check it will override all our rational thinking all together. The system that I am referring to is the emotional system.

Here is the thing that we are forgetting, you and I are human beings; we are not a computer.

The problem with trying to ignore or suppressing your emotions ironically gives them more strength.

In order to achieve success we need to stop treating you as a robot and start treating you as the human being you are.

As the emotions get stronger and stronger with each day that pass what does that do to the opportunity of staying consistent to the program?

I don't know much about computers but my small understanding of the matter has taught me that computers run on algorithms.

If the difference between long-term success and long-term failure is the difference between wanting to do something vs should be doing something then; The ultimate question is how do you change the way you feel. The first place to start is to notice when you find yourself saying you “should” and change the word to “want”. The words that you use are what you think. It may not be on a conscious level but they are there. “Should” is a word of judgment. Judgment, done without the utmost care, isn't productive. When you feel judged you have the tendency to want to defend yourselves. You feel under attacked and now you need to protect yourself. The way you protect yourself is by rationalizing the actions that you are being scrutinized for.

Your emotions are responsible for your feeling.

At this point I am sure you are saying to yourself When we feel like doing something, nothing in the “Come on Tzviki. By changing the word from should world is going to stop us from doing what needs to to want I will automatically achieve long term be done until that feeling goes away. success? That’s the silliest thing I have heard.” By constantly hearing the words “should” what you Although it is true, weight loss is all about calories are saying is: “Even though you don't feel like it in vs calories out and if you would just listen and do (emotions) you “should” do it”. what the nutritionists and diets tell you to do, you will lose weight (wont necessarily be healthy but Essentially, what “should” is saying is to ignore your weight will be lost). emotions and do what needs to be done.

Robots and computers are rational things. The goals for these machines is to react when something happens.

what to do and you will do it gladly.

On the other hand if you want to lose weight because you want to. There is no emotions pulling the opposite way. You don't need someone to tell you what you “should” be doing. You need some one to tell you

By telling yourselves that you should be doing something else you are actually reinforcing the behavior you are trying to change. But when you take the time to find out YOUR reasoning behind wanting to lose weight - The genuine reason - Then you remind yourself that living healthy is your choice and is something that you want. Imagine what this could do to your long term health. As simple as this concept may seem I beg of you not to let yourself believe it is simple at all. Trying to remove the word “should” could be the hardest thing you want to do. “There are four types among people: One who says, ‘What is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours.’ This is the middle way, but others say this is the trait of Sodom. One who says, ‘What is mine is yours, and what is yours is mine’ is an ignoramus. One who says, ‘What is mine is yours, and what is yours is yours’ is a chassid. And one who says, ‘What is mine is mine, and what is yours is mine’ is wicked.” (Avos 5:13) THE MISHNAH IS VERY CLEAR about the last three types of people that are listed. However, why are those who say “What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours and yours” considered by some to be practicing the ways of Sodom? What was so terrible about the ways of Sodom? Why could Hashem not bear their behavior? Why did they receive such an unusual punishment — a fiery rain that burned everything and a land that was turned over, so that there would remain no memory of them at all? Chazal offer many explanations regarding the rishus of the inhabitants of Sodom and explain why their actions put them in the category of being harasha (wicked). We know that the main trait in Sodom was achzarius — the opposite of middas harachamim, without which we know the world cannot exist. In fact, just before Hashem punished Sodom, Avraham Avinu displayed middas harachamim when he acted so differ-

ently from Sodom residents and prayed that the city be saved. He was, in every way, the perfect example of “what is mine is yours, and what is yours is yours,” and ultimately, his caring and prayers saved Lot. With Tisha B’Av still fresh in our memories, let us not forget why we are still in galus. So many seforim tell us that the cause of the destruction was sinas chinam. The seforim write that every generation during which the Beis Hamikdash is not rebuilt is as though it was burned anew. Maybe it’s time for us to really look into ourselves and better understand what traits we need to improve so that we can eradicate all traces of sinas chinam from our hearts. The meforshim explain that the word “achzar” is made up of two words: ach zar — a stranger. Middas achzarius results from feeling that another person is a stranger to us, that he doesn’t really matter, and when we feel this way about someone, we can get to a point of behaving in a cruel manner toward the person. Maharil Diskin explains that Hashem created the world so that He can give. Therefore, we can better understand Chazal’s teaching that a person must believe with full emunah that “Bishvili nivra ha’olam — the world was created for me.” This world was created for me, but our true purpose, and how we can best emulate Hashem, is by using our time and resources to care for others. The Nesivos Sholom told his close student that in the most difficult times, like when the terrorists attack and everyone runs to bomb shelters, the essence of a person becomes evident. Some people are busy making sure they have the best place to stay and that they have all the food and drinks they need. Only a few are concerned about others, to help them feel comfortable and make sure they have everything they need. And one who is busy with others at such a difficult time is a real “chashuve Yid.” He is someone for whom Hashem created this world. In this mishnah, the Tanna teaches us to take personal inventory of our deeds and assess where we are really standing. If we realize that we live with the words of “what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours,” then this is a middle way for now and we have the potential to grow and change. However, if we plan to stay this way for the rest of our lives and don’t intend to make an effort to give to others, then we should know that it’s the trait of Sodom. Of course, we don’t want to build another Sodom, but rather, we should make a commitment to live like Avraham Avinu, a true tzaddik who truly lived according to the words of “what is mine is yours, and what is yours is yours.” Rabbi Dovid Steiman specializes in the chinuch of today’s bachurim, enabling them to become their very best selves.

Garlic Herb Beef Burgers There’s nothing like a juicy burger seasoned with an array of tasty condiments in a lightly toasted hamburger bun. Especially when you know that your burger contains only the freshest ingredients and no unidentifiable fillers. Follow the technique to get uniformly sized burgers every time.

DIRECTIONS INGREDIENTS 2 lbs. ground beef 1 medium onion, diced 2 eggs ½ cup flavored bread (or corn flake) crumbs 1 tsp. whole-grain mustard (or regular) 3 cloves garlic, crushed Handful of fresh basil leaves, chopped ¼ tsp. dried basil ¼ tsp. dried oregano ¼ tsp. kosher salt ¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper

1. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix, ensuring that they are well incorporated. 2. Wrap a container cover (that’s approximately 4 inches in diameter and ¾ inch tall — I use the cover of a Kirkland nuts container) with a square of plastic wrap about 12 inches long. 3. Cut parchment paper into approximately 5-inch squares. You will need between 10 and 12 squares. 4. Pack a handful of the meat mixture into the plastic-lined cover and press down. Remove the plastic wrap and flip the burger onto a parchment square. Top with another parchment square. Repeat until all the meat is used up, totaling about 10 burgers. Freeze until ready to use. 5. Thaw just until you are able to separate the individual burgers. Grill on an outdoor grill or covered grill pan for 5–7 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Place the cooked burger into a bun and add veggies such as lettuce, spinach leaves, pickles, tomatoes and grilled onion. I like to apply a simple dressing for added flavor: Mix ½ cup mayonnaise with ½ T. garlic powder and ¼ cup barbecue sauce. Add ½ tsp. sriracha sauce if you like it hot.

Baked French Fry Duo Bake these in the oven while you’re outdoors, and then pop them onto the barbecue when you’re ready to serve dinner. Using sweet potatoes as well as traditional Idaho potatoes lets you enjoy both flavors in a unique dish.

INGREDIENTS 2 long, large sweet potatoes, unpeeled 2 Idaho potatoes, unpeeled ¼ cup oil (I prefer melted coconut oil) 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. garlic powder ½ tsp. parsley flakes ½ tsp. paprika Pinch freshly ground black pepper Sea salt for sprinkling

104 / THE MONSEY VIEW

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. Scrub the potatoes with a brush under running water. Cut into thin french fries and place into a large Ziploc bag. 3. In a small bowl, mix the remaining ingredients besides the sea salt. Pour the mixture into the bag of potatoes, seal and shake to combine. 4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the potatoes down in a single layer. Bake uncovered for 30–45 minutes. At this point you can either continue baking them so they become crispier or you may transfer them to a barbecue mat or pan and place directly on the grill at a low temperature for several minutes. This will give the fries a barbecue flavor and crispiness. 5. Sprinkle the sea salt just before serving.

Grilled Chicken Skewers This recipe yields soft and succulent chicken tenders spiced and grilled to perfection. They can be threaded onto a skewer for a fun appetizer or Shabbos day seudah addition. Serve them hot or cold (or in between!) and they’ll always taste delicious!

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. chicken strips (or tenders) ¼ cup oil 1 tsp. soy sauce 1 tsp. mustard ½ tsp. lemon juice 1 T. garlic powder 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. dried basil ½ tsp. paprika Pinch of black pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Place all the ingredients into a Ziploc bag and let marinate for 1 hour. If marinating for more than a few hours, omit the lemon juice. You may also freeze the chicken in the marinade and thaw before grilling. 2. Preheat a gas grill or grill pan to high and add the chicken strips. Cook for 5–8 minutes (covered if using a grill pan), flipping midway. 3. Stick a bamboo skewer or any decorative skewer lengthwise into each chicken strip and serve. These may be refrigerated on a plate covered tightly with plastic wrap. They’ll stay soft even overnight.

Did you ever think of salt as being the only rock we can actually consume? And boy, do we ever consume it! Salt is in a cabinet in every one of your kitchens, and it’s not surprising that literally every food you eat contains some measure of salt. While the average person consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium a day (that’s almost one and three quarter teaspoons), the actual daily limit, as recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, is less than 2,300 mg of sodium. So why are we constantly dining on foods with unhealthy amounts of sodium? The answer is simple: Salt makes everything taste better! Salt is quite a miraculous thing. Not only does it season your food to unimaginable greatness, but it actually helps “market” your food. Salt has the power to unwind the tight DNA structures of proteins found in food, enabling its aromas to fill the air. Aside from that, bitter foods can also be toned down by adding salt because it suppresses our perception of bitterness, while other tastes like sweet and sour are balanced by the addition of salt (think salted caramel and a classic vinaigrette). Salt is also a key component in the drying out and preservation of certain foods. Ever wondered why dried salami is loaded with salt (and why they have it hanging in room temperature)? Or why many recipes that use eggplant require you to sprinkle it first with salt and then to let it drain? The salting science works like this: Water from the inside of the food flows through the cell walls toward the salt, and this makes the vegetable or meat drier. So when a butcher cures deli meat with salt, the water is drawn out and evaporated by circulating air, and the meat becomes dry. Dry meat is not a friendly place for mold and bacteria, which is why you can pack dried salami for a trip and ditch the cooler. In the case of the eggplant, the dryer vegetable will result in a crispy, non-soggy parmesan. You can clearly see how salt affects our foods in various ways. And while the culinarily curious among you may have some questions about what I just wrote, there’s one thing you’re probably all wondering: What’s the deal with the different types of salt? How many varieties of salt am I supposed to have a relationship with? Why are they all different colors? Let’s discuss the ins and outs of the various kinds of salt you’ll typically find in most kitchens.

Sea Salt Sea salt is a natural salt that is harvested from evaporated seawater. It’s unrefined and sold as coarse grains of salt that are not pure white like table salt. They come in colors ranging from white to pink to red to brown, depending on where they have been sourced. Sometimes the bottle of salt will even feature a grinder mechanism on top so you can freshly grind your salt straight onto your food! Since sea salt hasn’t been stripped of minerals like zinc, potassium and iron, it will certainly taste more complex than table salt. The reason sea salt is considered a healthy salt is because it alkalizes your body, helps to prevent muscle cramps, regulates sleep, balances blood sugar, increases energy, balances electrolytes and regulates blood pressure (when combined with sufficient water and potassium).

Table Salt The reason it’s called table salt is because it belongs on your table. In a salt shaker, to be precise. Though it’s a processed, manufactured salt, it still offers culinary benefits. Table salt is made by heating naturally occurring salt to 1200° F, which strips the salt of some of its important minerals. Still, table salt earns its fame because of its ability to flow smoothly, as from a salt shaker. Anticaking agents are added during processing to prevent the salt from clumping and making it hard to pour. This also causes the salt to become very dense, which is why you need to use less of it for cooking and baking.

Himalayan Sea Salt One of the more famous types of sea salt is Himalayan sea salt. It’s that attractive-looking pink one you often notice on the supermarket shelves before Pesach. It’s actually one of its minerals, iron oxide (also known as rust), that gives it its trademark pink hue, though it may also be different shades of white or red. Can you imagine that one salt can boast 84 natural minerals and elements that are found in the human body? No wonder it is used widely in the kitchen… and in spa treatments! Still, there is no scientific evidence that this salt is healthier than other sea salts.

Has your doctor ever told you to limit your sodium intake because of a medical condition? Here are some low-sodium hacks to get your health back on track: • Substitute unsalted matzah for bread or challah. Now you can enjoy more than one slice!

Iodized Salt This is the same as table salt, but with added iodine. Iodine is one of the aforementioned minerals that are destroyed while refining table salt. Back in the day, scientists found a correlation between iodine deficiency and preventable mental retardation. So in 1924 salt manufacturers began to add a synthetic form of iodine back into the salt. Studies have shown that since that time, people have become smarter, as proven by the rise in national IQ levels!

• Preparing salmon for Shabbos? Don’t add salt — drizzle lemon juice, olive oil and saltfree fish seasoning for a delectable dish. • Avoid cured meats — now you know why they’re so salty! • Cut out commercial soups at all costs, especially the instant ones. These have more salt than you can imagine. Make your own soup and be mindful when seasoning. • Use sea salt versus table salt for less sodium per spoon. • Always ask your doctor if salt substitutes are safe for you to use since they are contraindicated with certain medications. • Last but not least, if you succumb to a salty temptation, grab a banana or other potassium-rich food to minimize the damage.

Kosher Salt We all love this one, don’t we? Because it actually sounds Jewish! This salt isn’t called kosher because of its certification (there are, in fact, some types without certification), but because of its involvement in the kashering process. As explained earlier, water helps draw the moisture from meat. After shechitah, salt is used to help remove the blood from the animal. That’s great for the slaughterhouses, but how is it of practical use to us kitchen folks? Since it’s much coarser and “pinchable” than table salt, you can more easily control how much of it goes into your food when seasoning, and it’s less likely you’ll over-salt your dish.

Which to choose and how to use Here’s a general idea of which salts are used for which purposes, but most salts are interchangeable in typical seasoning situations. Sea salt is expensive and therefore not a go-to seasoning for many people, but it definitely uplifts your dish as a garnish. I always sprinkle sea salt on top of my chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies before baking. The mild saltiness complements the sweet cookie perfectly and results in an explosion of flavor. I also use it to season my vegetables before roasting.

Kosher salt is my go-to for anything that gets cooked in water: pasta, vegetables, boiled eggs, etc. Meat is also usually seasoned with kosher salt before it’s cooked. Keep in mind that you’ll need to use more kosher salt in a recipe than table salt since it’s not as dense.

Table salt will work easily for cooking and baking and is relatively cheap and easy to find. I use this salt for salad dressing and vinaigrettes because it’s so fine that it won’t ruin the texture. It’s also good for last-minute seasoning at the table should your dish be lacking in salt.

The Power of the Sprout

Remember trying to grow your very own beanstalk as a child? It started off as a bean on a damp paper towel, and over the next few days, you observed the unassuming bean grow into something alive and green. And you dared to hope that the stalk would grow until the sky (or at the very least, that it would produce some home-grown beans, which somehow never materialized‌). Well, the experience may not have a place of honor on your gardening resume, but it was actually a great intro to the amazing science of sprouting!

Sprouting is a method of germinating seeds — be they grains, nuts, beans or other kinds of seeds — to make them easier to digest and allow the body to access their full nutritional value. The main benefit of sprouting is that it decreases anti-nutrients. Anti-nutrients occur naturally in plant seeds, and while they execute an important function in the growth of the plant, they interfere with digestion and absorption of vitamins and minerals when consumed. One of the most well-known and problematic anti-nutrients, phytic acid, locks up important vitamins and minerals in the body, creating a host of deficiencies. Phytic acid also restrains digestive enzymes from doing their job properly, causing digestive discomfort and upset. Another problem with anti-nutrients is that once consumed, they can create a negative reaction in the gut and trigger autoimmune responses. This is one of the reasons why many people react badly to eating most grains and breads. In addition to the amazing benefits of greatly reducing these anti-nutrients and increasing the absorption of vitamin B12, iron, magnesium and zinc in the body, there is so much more sprouting has to offer. For instance, it also: ADDS ENZYMES. Eating grains, beans, nuts and seeds may cause indigestion and inflammation. Sprouting unlocks beneficial enzymes to make it easier on the digestive system. This process also breaks down complex sugars and starches, thus making grains, especially, more digestible. INCREASES PROTEIN. Proteins and their amino acids can become more concentrated and absorbable in sprouted foods. While the concentration of different proteins in sprouted foods seems to vary, most

120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 8, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

studies indicate that proteins become more digestible when the seeds are sprouted. INCREASES FIBER CONTENT. Several studies have found that when seeds are sprouted, their fiber content not only increases, but also becomes more accessible for the body. BREAKS DOWN GLUTEN IN GRAINS. Although grains will not become “gluten-free” by sprouting, experiments have proven that sprouting decreases gluten proteins substantially, making it ideal even for those with slight gluten sensitivities.

Sprout it Out! Okay, you’re convinced and ready to give it a try. Good news! Sprouting is a simple process that can be easily done at home with minimal supplies: • YOUR FAVORITE NUTS, SEEDS, BEANS OR GRAINS. For sprouting, always start with raw seeds (not roasted, blanched or otherwise prepared) and preferably those of organic plants. Many conventional seeds, beans and grains have been pasteurized and irradiated and they will usually not sprout. • LARGE JAR. A Mason (Ball) jar is a very popular and convenient choice. • A BREATHABLE TOP. Specialized sprouting screen closures for Mason jars can be found in housewares stores, but a cheesecloth or mesh fabric secured with a rubber band can work just as well. Got all the supplies? Let’s start! • Place the seeds of your choice into the jar, and cover it with several inches of water. Let it soak for 5–48 hours (depending on its type; refer to the chart). If the type of seed you’re soaking requires more than 12 hours of sitting time, rinse the grains, nuts, seeds or beans every 12 hours and change the water. Notice how much they have expanded at this point! And they’ll be drinking lots of water… • After the initial soaking process, some of the grains, nuts, beans or seeds may be ready for use as snacking (requires drying) or to further cook as a nourishing meal. To continue sprouting them, strain and rinse the contents of the jar, and place the jar on its side or at an angle on the countertop. They are now nice and moist, exposed to air, and… starting to grow little tails! Leave them out for the amount of time specified by the chart below. Every day, as long as they’re sprouting, rinse and drain them well, putting the jar back on its side to

continue the sprouting session. Their tails will grow from 1/8 inch to 2 inches long. When ready, rinse sprouts well, drain and store in the fridge for 4 to 5 days. • Besides for growing tails, most shells will come off in the process. These will usually rise to the top when the jar contents are dunked in a bowl of water and can be discarded. The delicious sprouts are now ready to be consumed cooked or raw as a snack, sprinkled over a salad, eaten with the main course or used in recipes such as granola. They can even be ground into flours to make sprouted baked goods like the popular Ezekiel bread! A special note must be made for certain mucilaginous seeds,

which require a slightly different process. Hemp, chia and flaxseeds attain a gel-like consistency when soaked in water, and they can’t be sprouted using the usual method. To sprout them, fill a shallow dish with a slight amount of water, and add about a teaspoon of seeds. Let the seeds soak for several minutes, then drain them. Sprinkle the seeds back onto the dish, spreading them out evenly in a single layer. Leave some space between the seeds to allow spreading during the growth process, then cover it with a clear glass or plastic bowl and place it in a sunny spot. Twice a day, spray the dish with a bit of water so the surface stays slightly moist at all times. The seeds will absorb water and plump up, and the sprouts will appear in approximately 4 to 6 days. All in good health!

Isn’t water just water? We always hear that drinking water and staying hydrated is essential, but many don’t take this seriously. Is drinking water really that important? We live in a generation with many health issues, illnesses and diseases. It seems that not a day passes in which we do not get a message to daven for the refuah sheleimah of this person or that person, r”l. It’s terrifying. Of course, we know that Hashem runs the world and there’s no doubt that it’s all in His plan, but according to derech hateva (the ways of the world), many experts say that some of the top reasons why people get sick are: 1. PREMATURE AGING: People are aging faster than their actual age. 2. ACIDOSIS: People’s bodies are very acidic. 3. DEHYDRATION: People are not hydrated sufficiently. So what’s the connection between drinking water and the three above causes of sickness? The average person is made up of up to 65 percent water. The water that a person drinks becomes the water and makeup of their very body. With this understanding, we begin to see how drinking the right type of

water can help a person stay healthy. Let’s take it a step further by switching gears for a moment and talking about antioxidants, that famous word we see on labels and supplements. What are they exactly? Before we understand what antioxidants are, let’s explore the word oxidation. A simple way of understanding oxidation is when a cut apple turns yellow or metal rusts. In plain terms, oxidation is the process of aging. Guess what else oxidizes? We people do. And some people oxidize faster than their actual age because of their lifestyle: what they eat, what they inhale, their stress levels, etc. Generally speaking, the older a person gets or the faster they age, the higher the chances are that they will become sick. Now that we have established oxidation as the process of aging, we can understand what antioxidants do. While they don’t halt or reverse the aging process, they do slow it down. Which foods are loaded with antioxidants? Mostly raw foods like fruits, vegetables, berries and greenery. Many times, when you take a food that is rich in antioxidants and cook, heat or process it, the antioxidants are reduced, as they are often sensitive to high temperature. Since as a society, most of what we eat is cooked and processed and not in their natural, raw forms, we are not getting enough antioxidants in our bod-

ies, which causes our bodies to be full of free radicals that are responsible for making a person age quickly and become sick. The way to eliminate, remove and neutralize these free radicals is to get as many antioxidants as you can into your body. Unsurprisingly, antioxidants are the number-one selling supplement in the world, and whether you are a medical doctor or an alternative medicine practitioner, everyone across the board agrees that antioxidants are good for you and would encourage you to get as much of it as you can. Now going back to water: Since we’ve established that most of a person’s body consists of water and that the water a person drinks becomes the water in their body, we want to ensure that the drinking water is full of antioxidants, and is not oxidizing the body. The way oxidation is measured is through a scientific device called an ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) Meter, which measures the antioxidant or oxidation levels in liquids by measuring its voltage in the measurement called millivolts. If the measurement reads higher than zero, then the water is oxidizing, thus promoting accelerated aging, and the higher the number, the worse it is. If the measurement reads less than zero, it signifies that the liquid contains an antioxidant. The higher the negative digit, the more antioxidants the liquid has and the healthier the liquid is for a person. Most bottled waters measure +300s mv, many flavored drinks measure +400s mv, and sodas and seltzers measure up to +500 mv. All this is very oxidizing. On the flip side, green tea measures about -100s mv, fresh vegetables juices -150s mv, cod liver oil -200s mv and Kangen water measures up to -500s mv. These are all very high levels of desperately needed antioxidants that slow down aging and help avoid sickness. The second reason people get sick, as we mentioned, is that their bodies are very acidic. There is something called the pH scale that ranges from 1 to 14. Seven, the middle number, is considered neutral. Anything less than 7 is acidic, and anything higher

than 7 is alkaline. A person should be slightly alkaline, especially a healthy person. Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg won the Nobel Prize in 1931 for discovering the root cause of cancer. He discovered that cancerous tissue and cells can only live, thrive and exist in an acidic environment. Cancer cells cannot live in an alkaline setting. This is a terrifying discovery, especially for today’s generation, because as a society, most of what people nowadays eat and drink make a person’s body very acidic. Emotional stress is another factor that causes a person to be more acidic. And when a body is acidic, it’s an open door for all types of health issues, especially the big one. So it’s obvious what to avoid: most bottled waters, sports drinks, seltzers and sodas, which are all acidic. Most natural water, untouched and unprocessed by man, is alkaline, just like Kangen water. Kangen water makes three levels of alkaline water: pH 8.5, pH 8.0 and pH 9.5. The third main reason that people get sick is dehydration. Not only are people not drinking enough water, but they also are not drinking the right type of water. As we know, water is made up of molecules, which are grouped together in clusters. Most bottled, tap and filtered water have large cluster sizes and don’t get absorbed effectively. The cluster sizes of natural water that is unprocessed by man are so much smaller, and this water gets absorbed into our bodies quickly and efficiently, and as a result, the water hydrates us properly. Kangen water’s molecular structure is very small and promotes rapid absorption. So it’s clear that drinking water with high levels of antioxidants, with alkaline and with small molecular struc-

you cook and drink with is much easier and very beneficial. FAQs About

Kangen Water What’s the lifespan of a Kangen system? Since the Kangen system is licenced and registered as a medical device in Japan, it’s built at the highest level of quality and has an expected life of 20 to 25 years! Can I take your system with me when I move to a new residence? The Kangen water is system is extremely portable and can be moved very easily. Many families actually take it with them to the country for the summer. Do I have to ask my landlord before installing a Kangen filter? Since the Kangen system is not a permanent installation and no type of drilling is required, it should not be any issue with landlords. Where does the system get stored? The Kangen system can go either on the counter or beneath it. How long will water from your system remain alkalized? After the water is created by the Kangen System, it begins to immediately oxidize and slowly begins to lose its properties. It’s most effective within 48 hours.

morning wake-up and so much more. It is also used for skin care, disinfecting, cleaning and removing chemicals from produce. Change your water; change your life! To schedule a free Kangen Water demonstration and to get free Kangen Water for one month, please call Shimon Kolyakov anytime at 917-681-0003.

Does the water retain its health properties when cooked? From the three properties that make Kangen Water so special and effective (antioxidants, alkalinity and fast absorption), only the antioxidants get destroyed by cooking. Its alkaline and fast-absorption properties stay intact. Is alkaline water safe to drink with medication? It is safe, but since Kangen water is superabsorbent, it can dissolve medication much faster than the medication is intended to be dissolved (as in the case of time-release medication). Therefore, within 30 minutes before and after taking medication, customers are recommended to push the 7pH Neutral button on the Kangen System and drink that water instead. (This recommendation does not apply to vitamins or supplements.) Can drinking an excess of alkaline water cause problems? With today’s lifestyle, it’s very difficult to be too alkaline. In addition, the repercussions of being too alkaline are nothing compared to the repercussions of being too acidic. The recommended pH levels of drinking and cooking is anywhere from 8.5pH to 9.5pH, and a person should be drinking a minimum of half their body weight in ounces for optimal health. Drink up!

Of course, eating properly, exercising and not being stressed are extremely important too, but those are much harder to achieve at all times and require significant lifestyle changes that unfortunately many start but fail to maintain. However, changing the water that

May one use deodorant and perfume on Shabbos? On long, hot summer Shabbos afternoons, deodorant becomes a necessity — but is it muttar? Stick deodorants possibly violate the melachah of memachek or memareach.1 So what should we do? Use spray deodorant! With spray deodorant there is no problem of memachek and memareach.2 However, there may be another problem. The chachamim prohibited infusing something with a new smell on Shabbos because it is somewhat similar to performing melachah.3 But many poskim hold that this prohibition does not apply to spraying the body because the sweat from the body takes away the smell.4 Also, spray deodorant is mainly used to remove bad smell, and not necessarily to give good smell. Practically speaking, the Mishnah Berurah and the Shevet HaLevi rule leniently and allow one to spray the body.5 Spraying perfume or deodorant on clothing, though, is forbidden according to all opinions.6 Even so, one who sprayed his body does not need to worry that the smell will rub onto his clothes, as long as that is not his intent.

May one use bug-repellent spray, mouthwash and air fresheners on Shabbos? An interesting question comes up with bug-repellent sprays. We don’t like the way they smell, but we hate the bugs and the mosquito bites more — so we tolerate the smell. The question here is whether the prohibition of creating smell applies in such a case, where one doesn’t like the smell, but one wants it there nonetheless to repel bugs. Rav Wosner, zt”l, ruled that it has the same din as perfume, since one wants the smell to be there.7 Therefore it would be assur to spray it on clothes, but one who sprays it on the body has many poskim to rely on, as we mentioned before. The poskim also point out that one is allowed to use mouthwash on Shabbos following the ruling of the poskim mentioned above, that there is no problem of creating a smell on the body.8 However, those who water down the mouthwash before using it may run into the problem of infusing the water with the smell of the mouthwash. According to many poskim this is assur, so one should l’chatchilah prepare the mouthwash-water combo before Shabbos.9 If one did not do so, one can certainly rely on Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l, who said that since one doesn’t intend to give smell to the water, but just wants to dilute the mouthwash, it is permissible.10 Finally, one is allowed to use air fresheners on Shabbos because giving smell to the air doesn’t last too long, and therefore was not part of the gezeirah of creating new smells.11 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

When it comes to spraying places on the body that have hair, more poskim prohibit it because hair retains smell longer than skin. (See Brachos 43; Kaf Hachaim 128:44; Ohr Letzion II 36:8.) Summer ’18 PSAR (Preventative Search & Rescue) Campaign by COMMSAR

A few years ago, two COMMSAR members did a routine overnight exercise on West Mountain. The temperature during the day was in the 80s, and the following day was slated to be in the 90s. That night, though, gave them a real chill — literally. As the sun dipped, so did the temperature, and then the wind started whipping across the exposed ridge, and our two members had to abandon their hammocks and head for lower ground. Taking wind-chill factor into consideration, they were risking hypothermia in the midst of a heatwave! You can even get hypothermia in Florida. Shocking? Well, people go to the Sunshine State expecting nothing but sunshine, but swimming in water that is cooler than one’s body temperature will keep on cooling off the body more and more. If we fail to exit the water in time (or are caught in a prolonged downpour), hypothermia can set in. The moral? Take weather seriously. When dealing with the outdoors, consideration of weather is of utmost importance. In our daily lives we are typically only interested in knowing the chance of precipitation (rain) and the temperature. In the backcountry we work with terms such as flash flood; wind speed, direction and gusts; lightning; sky cover; rain amount over time span; and heat index. Not to mention water-related weather terms such as tide fluctuations and rip currents. In this article we’ll touch on just a few. Word to the wise: If you’re not familiar with all of these terms, then cancel your hike next time there is but a chance of rain or extreme heat. MOUNTAIN WEATHER: Realize that a mountain

COMMSAR has a diverse team of professionals, including a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation–licensed outdoor guide who shared the following weather tidbits based on traditional folklore:

produces its own weather system! (Clouds over 3,000 feet up can rain out because of a mountain that only rises 1,500 feet. Air gets pushed upward, which pushes more air up, which brings the cloud into a higher, colder layer with lower air pressure, which makes it condense). As such, it is difficult to accurately predict weather in high altitudes. When doing a serious backcountry hike, always carry spare raingear in your backpack. STORM: If the temperature turns sour on your picnic, it may produce a frown, but you’ll move on. If you’re stuck 3 miles into a trail, however, it can become dangerous. The best thing you can do if caught in a storm is to find shelter and ride it out. There are plenty of natural rock formations in the woods that create shelter. Carry a contractor’s garbage bag; it can be used as a quick shelter. Always let someone on the outside know your status and location. FLASH FLOOD: When hiking in a narrow, steep canyon (or crevice, gulley, etc.), flash floods are a serious threat. Imagine hiking in a very huge pipe when a stream of water suddenly comes at you at high speed. One can be hiking in complete dry terrain, but if there’s a downpour some 15 miles upstream, that water may be making its way to lower ground fast and furious. LIGHTNING: Here’s what the National Weather Service cautions: Stay away from isolated tall trees, towers or utility poles. Stay away from metal conductors such as wires or fences. Lightning often

EXPECT PLEASANT WEATHER WHEN YOU SEE SOME OF THESE SIGNS: “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.” The dust particles in the dry air of tomorrow’s weather produce a glowing red sunset. “Swallows flying way up high, there’s no rain in the sky.” Swallows are birds that catch and eat flying insects. In the high air pressure that comes with fair weather, insects can be carried aloft by air currents. “If smoke goes high, no rain comes by.” Campfire smoke rises straight up when there is no wind. Still air is generally stable and won’t move moisture into an area. “When the dew is on the grass, rain will never come to pass.” Dew forms when air moisture condenses on cool leaves and grass. This happens especially during the cool, clear nights that come with good weather and high pressure. THE FOLLOWING SIGNS SUGGEST BAD WEATHER IS ON THE WAY: “Red sky at morning, sailor take warning.” Dry, dusty air is moving away from you toward the east. Clouds and moist air might be coming in from the west. “Swallows flying near the ground, a storm will come around.” The low air pressure that pulls in stormy weather causes insects to fly close to the ground on heavy, moist wings. Swallows feeding on them will follow. “If smoke hangs low, watch out for a blow.” Low air pressure can prevent campfire smoke from rising very high. “When grass is dry at morning light, look for rain before the night.” On a cloudy night, grass might not cool enough for dew to form.

strikes outside the area of heavy rain and may strike as far as 10 miles from any rainfall. Many lightning deaths occur before any rain arrives or after storms have seemingly passed and the rain has ended. Remember the rule: When thunder roars, go indoors! Realize that lightning victims do not carry an electrical charge and may need first aid immediately. However, make sure they are safe to access (i.e., not on a metal ladder that sits in a puddle).

FOREST FIRES: Never leave a grill or cigarette butt unattended! While letting a grill die out on one occasion may end up just fine, on another occasion it can cause the house or entire forest to go up in flames. It’s all weather related. Hot, dry or windy weather is a bad mix with unattended flames. According to the National Park Service, 90 percent of wildland fires in the U.S. are caused by humans (intentionally or unintentionally). (For heat-related safety tips, see previous issue.)

MEMORABLE MINES

The Cayuga Salt Mine in Lansing, NY (near Syracuse), is the deepest in America. In 2016, 17 miners got stuck 90 stories below ground when the mine lift broke down. They spent the night there, drinking hot coffee and wrapping themselves with warm blankets that had been lowered down to protect them against the 20-degree air blowing into the shaft. They were rescued 10 hours later.

The Salina Turda Salt Mine in Romania was opened to the public in 2010, not as a mining adventure, but as the new home to an underground theme park. There is a Ferris wheel, bowling alley, an underground lake with boating and more.

Halotherapy is an alternative medical practice that some people believe heals a broad range of conditions, from asthma to infections. The therapy consists of breathing salty air inside special salt chambers. Sessions usually last a half hour to an hour. 148 / THE MONSEY VIEW

The Praid Salt Mine is used for halotherapy by many. To make the time spent breathing salty air more enjoyable, the mine has cafes, libraries, pool tables, a swimming pool and more.

Salt Lake City, Utah, is thus called due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, which is nicknamed America’s Dead Sea due to its high salinity. At the edge of the lake are brine pools in which salt is extracted through evaporation. The primary uses of this salt are for de-icing, to make salt licks for livestock and for use in water softeners.

WHEN SALT IS WANTED

Do you know where your salt comes from? It may have been be made in the good ol’ U.S. of A. America is second only to China in salt production.

There are three ways for companies to extract salt from the earth. SOLAR EVAPORATION

SOLUTION MINING

In the solar evaporation method, brine is left to sit in shallow pools where the water evaporates, leaving the salt behind. Nowadays, heat may be added to the pools to increase the rate of evaporation.

Table salt is often mined using the solution method. The mining company will pump freshwater into a chamber over a salt bed, dissolving the salt and creating a brine. They then pump the brine out of the chamber and into a purification plant where other minerals are removed, the salt is cleaned and iodine often added.

DEEP SHAFT MINING Deep shaft mining involves forming chambers under the earth by digging and using explosives to reach salt beds. Salt that is extracted is sent by conveyor belt to the surface, where it is processed. The rock salt taken from underground mines is most commonly used for de-icing roads in cold climates. Empty salt shafts are frequently filled with chemical and nuclear waste.

WHEN SALT IS NOT WANTED

Desalination is the process of removing salt from seawater.

Desalinating water is pricey, due to the amount of energy it takes to process the water. Some ships and submarines desalinate water for their freshwater supply.

Eretz Yisroel has been at the forefront of desalination technology. More than a third of the country’s tap water was desalinated from the Mediterranean Sea in 2013. The number has only risen since then.

There are four desalination plants in Eretz Yisroel. The one in Ashkelon was planned to the be the largest in the world when commissioned, but has since been outdone by a plant in Saudi Arabia. THE MONSEY VIEW / 149

There’s no Boris here! Do you hear? Don’t you dare bother us again!

Phone call from Israel.

The situation is complicated.

We’ll have to involve the head of the suburban district in Zurich.

There’s a group of innocent children being held by force by missionaries in an area under your jurisdiction.

I can’t allow that to happen here. I’m calling the police now, and they’ll check it out right away.

Should one of us come with you?

That’s the house.

No need. We’ll keep you updated.

Surround it to make sure no one leaves. I’ll knock on the door.

Recap: Avraham calls to the missionary cult, hoping that the staff will allow the children to speak to another child long enough for the antimissionary organization to be able to trace the call.

The Different Styles of Monsey Homes Exploring architectural structures in our area BROUGHT TO YOU BY: YOEL GORALNIK

Featured Home Style:

MANSION

An impressive stairway off the entry is a prominent feature of a mansion

So what makes a home a mansion? In the 20th century, European mansions contained ball rooms, billiard rooms, salons, breakfast rooms, dining rooms, playrooms, music rooms and tens of bedrooms. Today, mansions don’t necessarily have all of the above amenities, but are defined by their sheer size and luxuriousness.

162 / THE MONSEY VIEW

The lower level in mansions is often comprised of many rooms for sitting, dining and entertaining.

A sitting room in a modern mansion

PROS: Living in the lap of luxury sure has its perks. The spaciousness allows for hosting, entertaining and for roomy accommodations for guests. There’s space for home businesses and space for just about anything one fancies to have under their roof.

FYI: While 8,000 feet earns a stately house the classification of a mansion, it doesn’t end there. A large mansion has 15,000 to 25,000 square feet, a mega mansion, 25,000 to 50,000 square feet, and a super mansion, anything greater than 50,000 square feet.

ATTRIBUTES: A mansion is a large home, typically starting at 8,000 square feet (though some 5,000-squarefoot homes may make the cut, too). Mansions include many luxuries: large, open foyers with grand staircases, crystal chandeliers, pools, courts in the yard, powder and sitting rooms, luxury bathrooms, rooms for recreation and rooms for entertaining. Both the exterior and interior are constructed of expensive materials. Each room is spacious, beautifully designed and typically features fine furniture. Ceilings are high and the entire decor is stately.

CONS: Its main con is obvious: The sheer fortune it costs to purchase and maintain a home of such large proportions. Taxes, of course, reflect the home’s value, too, running into tens of thousands. And one housekeeper is hardly enough for such a home; an entire staff is often needed to tend to the house. On a practical level, finding a family member in a large home may require the use of a telephone, and going from room to room can qualify as the day’s exercise. Also, if the need to sell arises, more expensive homes take longer to sell.

FYI: One guess as to the surname of the man who built the largest mansion in the U.S.! It was George Washington Vanderbilt II who owned the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina at the end of the 19th century, and it is still owned by his descendants. At 178,926 square feet, this mansion is one of the most prominent examples of the Gilded Age.

PREVALENCE: The Crestview area, the Concord area, Montebello and Pomona on the Hill are home to mansions. Some are also found in upthe-hill Monsey and in the Forshay area.

FYI: In the Gilded Age, NYC was home to the rich and famous, boasting many luxurious mansions, both at the riverside and also as part of the “Millionaire’s Row” on 5th Avenue. Unfortunately, most have been demolished to make room for expensive buildings that can accommodate much more, but a few still remain. It’s the name Vanderbilt again that comes up most often as their owners.

FYI: The most popular mansion in the U.S. is of Vanderbilt fame too: The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island.

FYI: The most expensive mansion in the greater Monsey area on the market is priced at $3,900,000.
