(Re: Take It with a Grain of Salt, Issue 160) I enjoyed R. Niederman’s informative article on the variety of salts. Until recently, I used only kosher salt for all of my cooking, because I knew that it was “chef’s salt.” Lately I have switched to sea salt and Himalayan salt after learning about their health benefits, and I don’t see that it has affected the taste of my food. (I do have to adjust the amounts I use, though.) I would like to add that for baking, especially yeast doughs, one should use kosher salt exclusively because it results in a lighter, airier bread as it is a lighter salt, as mentioned in the article. Leah Stern

AN APPRECIATED ARTICLE (Re: Ready, Set, Grow!, Issue 160) I was so happy to see the information you featured about sprouting. I try to sprout things here and there, but I never really knew why it's so healthy or anything else about it. Thank you for opening my eyes; it makes such a big difference to know the health benefits about foods we eat. With appreciation, R. Gross

I was so happy to see another wonderful article by Blimy Wassertheil. I want to take this opportunity to thank Blimy publicly for helping my family. My mother, who has diabetes, was recommended to speak to her about healthy lifestyle changes. Her blood sugar level was 235 at that point, and after implementing some changes as per Blimy’s advice, it was down to 190 after just four weeks! I decided to speak to her about one of my kids, who had a very hard time falling asleep; it would take her as long as three hours. Knowing M&S SHOE REPAIR

that melatonin isn't always the best thing, I asked Blimy about natural ideas to help her sleep. And indeed, a few simple changes made all the difference, and a few days later she was falling asleep in just 15 minutes. C.S.

In the instructions for sprouting, it says that all seeds are soaked for between 5 and 48 hours, and on the chart it says that walnuts should be soaked for 4 hours. How long should I soak them for? BLIMY WASSERTHEIL RESPONDS: Thank you for question. The 5 was a typo, and the chart is accurate. It should have read that seeds should soak between 2 and 48 hours.

GETTING THE SMELL OUT

YOUR OUTDOOR TRASH CAN SMELLS (not so pleasantly).

LET US TAKE CARE OF IT.

I’d like to share some advice about removing odors from laundry washed with All Free and Clear, since due to its lack of scent, I’ve heard people complain that their clothing never smells fresh. I just had this recently, when my cleaning lady dumped wet towels into the hamper without us realizing. By the time we got around to washing, the clothing all smelled terrible. Even when washed twice it still had a moldy odor, so I added ¼ cup of white vinegar, which acts as an odor neutralizer, along with a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Everything came out fresh and clean! R.R.

PRIVATE PARKING SPACES There have been numerous letters regarding the use of private property as a shortcut. I’d like to point out a similar issue that people are unaware of. In most condo developments, each homeowner has one parking space, and by parking in one of them you are actually taking a space that belongs to one of the owners. Often, after coming home late at night, I find that someone who doesn’t even live in my building has parked in my space, and I have to find parking elsewhere. Please be aware that being a guest of someone in a condominium or attending a simcha does not give you permission to park in their driveway. I am sure nobody has any bad intentions; it’s just that most people don’t realize that the spaces actually belong to others. Thank you, A.A.

Your Excursions booklet is the number-one guidebook used by families for trips and getaways. It's a brilliant compilation that has really changed the way families plan their trips. No need to nudge friends' friends' friends to find out their successful itinerary. We can all now plan our own. Thank you for spearheading this monumental project.

I think it's time for a comprehensive guide of all the wonderful organizations that are out there. There are so many of them. How is someone supposed to know where to turn to in time of need? Many of the organizations don't make waves, and people in need don't know they exist. There needs to be one central place to find organizations, with a brief description of what each does (as many organizations seem to be doing the same thing, and it would be so helpful if the nuances were detailed). Also helpful would be a separate listing of helplines, gemachim, etc. I think implementing this idea can change the world, not to mention the zechusim that can be acquired through this project! (Re: Ramapo Valley Reservation, Issue 159) Thank you for featuring Ramapo Reservation in your Excursions column, which offers a scenic outing for many families. Of the dozens of readers who visited and enjoyed the reservation in the past week, we only had one search — a family who went way beyond the boundaries of the map published in The Monsey View and got lost. It is important to note that these park systems are a maze of over a hundred miles of trails, and if you go beyond the boundaries of the map you are carrying, you are likely to get lost. Many thanks again for offering the community healthy, free local trips, and for keeping the community safe. Jay Schwartz CommSAR - Community Search & Rescue

Parshas Shoftim

By: Malka Schneps

RABBI ENGEL EDGED HIS WAY forward in line in the crowded seforim store, a new copy of Menachos tucked gently under his arm. He was beginning to teach a new Daf Yomi shiur the following night, and he wanted to bring an extra copy in case anyone would need to borrow one during the shiur. As he waited, Rabbi Engel learned from a small sefer he kept in his pocket for such occasions. At his older age, standing in long lines was no longer a simple matter, and after a while, his feet started to ache. Looking up from his sefer, Rabbi Engel noticed that there was now just one person ahead of him in line. He glanced at his watch and became worried. While he was still running on time for his doctor’s appointment, if this line would take too much longer, he might have to replace the sefer on the shelf and come back to the store another time. At long last, Rabbi Engel’s turn arrived. As he stepped forward to present his sefer to the cashier, a well-dressed young man breezed passed the entire line and presented the very same sefer to the cashier. The man threw two twenty-dollar bills on the counter and said, “Give me two dollars in quarters with my change, in case I’m ever lucky enough to score a parking space around here.” Rabbi Engel turned to the younger man and gently asked, “I haven’t seen you around here before — are you visiting or have you moved in?” The man looked annoyed. Ignoring Rabbi Engel, he addressed the cashier. “Look, I’m in a big rush. Just ring me up already.” The cashier politely informed the man that if he wanted to make a purchase, then he would have to wait his turn in line. With that, the cashier rang up Rabbi Engel. Relieved that he would not have to wait for the young man who had tried to cut the line, Rabbi Engel paid for his sefer and went out to his car, where he discovered that a large white SUV was double-parked, blocking in Rabbi Engel’s car. Rabbi Engel made his way back inside the store, where he confirmed that the white SUV be-

longed to the young man. Explaining to him that he had a doctor’s appointment, Rabbi Engel asked if the young man would be so kind as to move his vehicle. The man looked at Rabbi Engel as if he had just asked for a million dollars. “Well, I would’ve been out of here already, but the cashier wouldn’t ring me up. Now I have to wait in this line. Just relax, I’ll be out in a few minutes.” Rabbi Engel returned to his car, where at least he could sit as he waited a second time. He’d have to call the doctor’s office hoping that they could still squeeze him in even if he’d be late; the pains he had been experiencing in his chest from time to time were really worrying him. Just as he flipped open his phone to call, the car parked just in front of him pulled out of its parking space. Baruch Hashem, he thought. Now I can pull out and make it to the doctor on time. The next night, Rabbi Engel began his first class in his Daf Yomi shiur. He was happy to see that 18 people had showed up, each sporting a copy of Menachos. Then, 10 minutes into the shiur, the door swung open. The young man from the seforim store sauntered in and took a seat right in front. IT SAYS IN THIS WEEK’S PARSHA, “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof… — Justice, justice you shall pursue” (Devarim 16:20). If the Torah was only enjoining us to pursue justice/righteousness, it would be enough to simply say, “Tzedek tirdof…” Why does the word “tzedek” get repeated? R’ Simcha Bunim of Peshischa explains that it is not enough to pursue righteousness — we must pursue righteousness in righteous ways. The young man in the story above wanted to do a mitzvah and learn Daf Yomi. He certainly gets credit for this desire, but he should also be careful to pursue it in a way that does not inconvenience other people. This story is fictional, but in real life this issue is very relevant. May we all be zealous in our pursuit of justice, and equally zealous to do so in ways that are just.

Zebrowski Calls for Improvements and Shortened Wait Times at DMV After being inundated by calls from Rockland residents who have spent three hours or more waiting on lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles, Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski called for an analysis of wait times at the Haverstraw office that would include a comparison with other counties. With only one DMV office in all of Rockland County, Zebrowski said that the time has come for changes that would allow the department to better

meet customer demand. “When visiting the DMV, there is a certain expectation that there will be a bit of a wait,” said Zebrowski. “Spending hours, almost half of the day, at the DMV is unacceptable and, quite frankly, unproductive.” Federal regulations that will require drivers to have enhanced licenses in order to use their licenses to board a domestic flight by October 2020 will only exacerbate the problem,

noted Zebrowski. Possible solutions suggested by Zebrowski to alleviate the problem include adding a second Rockland County office, creating satellite offices or mobile vans to offer specific services, adding more staff at the Haverstraw DMV, expanding online services, and instituting regular monitoring that would allow the DMV to reallocate resources in response to actual wait times.

National Night Out at Ballpark Several hundred people turned out at Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona last Wednesday for Rockland County’s National Night Out, a countrywide project dedicated to improving relationships between first responders and local communities. The National Night Out program was first launched in 1984 as an effort to build bridges and create positive interactions between residents and law enforcement groups, community watch patrols and civic groups. Over the past 33 years, it has grown to encompass 16,000 communities and 38 million people all across the United States. There were giveaways aplenty at the ballpark, with children collecting stress balls, water bottles, stickers, badges, coloring books and more as they took advantage of the opportunity to climb aboard fire trucks and ambulances, get a close-up look at a helicopter, have their faces painted and see mounted members of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department on horseback. Among those who participated in the event were the Hillcrest Fire Department, the Ramapo Police Department, the Rockland County

Sheriff’s Office, Hatzoloh, the New York State Police, the United States Postal Service, Stop DWI New York, Rockland Paramedics, Rockland Mobile Care, Community Medical and Dental Care, Med Wiz, Fidelity Care, Marquis Home Care, TurtleBoo and Friendship Adult Care. Visitors to the ballpark had an opportunity to try out “The Convincer,” a device that simulates the impact of a 7 mph crash in an effort to promote greater seatbelt use. Those who rode the simulator expressed surprise at the magnitude of a low-impact crash, noting that a crash at more typical speeds could be devastating without seatbelts. “If I can convince one person to wear their seatbelt, I know I did my job,” said Trooper Jason Lewis of the New York State Police’s Troop F in Middletown. Trooper Steven Nevel of the New York State Police said that he hopes that meeting with local residents in an informal setting will help bridge the gap between law enforcement and private citizens.

“I want people to know that law enforcement is here for them,” said Trooper Nevel. “We are approachable and you can ask us questions. We don’t just write tickets. We are here for the community.”

“Rabi Yosi the son of Kisma said: Once I was traveling and I met a man. He gave me shalom and I returned his greeting. He said to me, ‘Rabi, where are you from?’ I said to him, ‘I am from a great city of chachamim and sofrim.’ He said to me, ‘Rabi, would you like to reside with us in our place? I will give you a million dinars of gold, precious stones and pearls.’ I said to him, ‘If you were to give me all the silver, gold, precious stones and pearls in the world, I would not dwell anywhere but in a place of Torah. As Dovid Hamelech says in Tehillim, ‘I prefer the Torah of Your mouth over thousands in gold and silver.’” (Avos 6:9) THERE ARE SEVERAL QUESTIONS one can have when reading this mishnah. First, why did the person want Rabi Yosi to live in his city, and why was he ready to pay such an abnormal amount of money? Furthermore, why did Rabi Yosi refuse without first verifying whether this was a city of Torah? He immediately answered that he will never leave a place of Torah. Maybe the other city was also a place of Torah? The following story will help us answer these questions. Three merchants were once returning from a market fair. It was a long journey home, and they had to stop somewhere for Shabbos. The men rented a room in a roadside inn and hid their money in a hole in the ground. Shabbos passed pleasantly, and afterward they prepared for the remainder of the trip. When they went to retrieve the money, they were surprised to find that the hole was empty. Since no one else could possibly have known of their hiding place,

August 15, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 79 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

it was obvious that one of them had stolen it. The three merchants went to the rav of the town and shared their story. “Before pronouncing who is guilty,” said the rav, “let me tell you a story. There was once a village where two orphans lived, a boy and a girl. When they were very young, they promised that when they grew up they would marry each other. Eventually, the boy moved to a different town, and they lost touch. “When the girl grew up, a match was suggested with a very nice boy, and they wanted to get married. However, the

We can assess where we stand in ruchniyus and where our focus lies by seeing what we talk about most. girl explained that she could not give her consent because of the promise she had made years earlier. They decided that she would find the other boy and ask him to release her from her promise. “During her journey, the girl traveled through a forest, where a robber attacked her and took her money. She begged for mercy, and through her tears, she told him her story, explaining that she had gone on this long and dangerous journey so that she would not break her promise. The robber was touched by her sincerity and decided to return her money and release her. “Thereafter, the girl reached the town where the boy now lived. She told him that she wanted to marry someone else and asked him to free her. He did as she asked, and the girl returned home to get married. “Now, tell me,” said the rav to the merchants, “who is the

brandaringroup.com

hero in this story?” “I think it is the girl,” answered the first. “She wanted to remain faithful to her word and even went on a dangerous journey to do so.” “I think it is the boy,” answered the second. “He had the right to marry her, but freed her and let her be happy with someone else.” “I think it is the robber,” said the third. “The girl was in his hands, but he released her and returned her money, too.” “You are the ganev!” exclaimed the rav to the third merchant. “Because all you think about is money and this is why you talk about it, too!” When that rich person met Rabi Yosi, he recognized his greatness and wanted very much to bring such a holy diamond to the place where he lived and show all of his rich friends what he got. Rabi Yosi didn’t need to check if the man was from a city of Torah, because the first thing the man began talking about was money. If he would be from a city of Torah, he would attempt to connect to Rabi Yosi through the Torah of this city. He would not immediately begin talking about money. This mishnah teaches us that we can assess where we stand in ruchniyus and where our focus lies by seeing what we talk about most. When we’re constantly talking about gashmiyus, we prove that this is the main focus of our lives. In order for us to connect to the Ribono Shel Olam, we need to focus on ruchniyus. By taking an honest look at ourselves, we can see how to improve and how we can grow closer to the Ribono Shel Olam, and the words we use are a powerful indicator of who we are and where we stand in our lives. Rabbi Dovid Steiman specializes in the chinuch of today’s bachurim, enabling them to become their very best selves. Town Square Mall

Yeast Cakes for Yom Tov

By: Leah Stern Photo Credit: C. Tarkieltaub Yom tov cooking is pretty hectic, and much of the cooking must be left for the last minute. For those who enjoy to serve homemade cake and pastries, freezing them ahead of time is a great option, especially when it comes to delicacies that require time-consuming preparation. Since the yeast dough featured uses egg yolks, I created the coconut log recipe to prevent the whites from being wasted. They were an instant hit and are worth a try.

“I bought this same outfit for all of my girls,” I overheard the saleslady say to a shopper. “And for the one who’s a bit chubby, like your daughter, I added a belt — like this.” I watched the mother’s face blanch, then redden, as the saleslady proceeded to demonstrate how to modify the outfit, using the young girl as an example. Thankfully, the little girl didn’t seem to understand the English exchange. But I was in shock, because despite her desire to help, the saleslady had just risked putting a child’s self-image in jeopardy. Her overeagerness to make a sale had clouded proper judgment. She’d made a huge mistake.

We all know the type, salespeople with fake smiles plastered on their faces, who jump on you the second you enter their store. They follow you around, comment on your selections and try to get you to sign

up for new offers or sell you an item that you have zero interest in. It’s exasperating, annoying — and completely preventable. When proper training couples with a bit of common sense, sales associates have the power to create a stellar image for the business they own or work for. As sales expert Grant Cardone says, “Great salespeople are literally the engine of every economy in the world.” Salespeople are the face of a business, the literal image customers

associate with a company’s name. And while a great salesperson builds the brand, a poor one drives it into the earth. If a single sales agent is responsible for a customer walking away unhappy, having felt unheard, abused or misguided, it’s a black mark on the entire company — and the customer will often make sure everyone knows it. According to one expert, a satisfied customer tells three friends; an angry one tells 3,000! Damage control, once the deed is done, can be more costly than investing the initial time and cost into trainings that cover the basics of customer service. So how do you create (or become!) a sales superstar, one who will bring honor to your company name? Here are some tips culled from business experts around the world, as well as from my own previous experience in the world of retail. GREET, BUT DON’T CHASE Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. Entering a store, it’s unbelievably awkward when the sales help silently stare at you. It’s equally uncomfortable when they stick to you like glue. Don’t do that!

TRUST THE DOWN EXPERT

To avoid awkwardness all around, acknowledge the customer with a smile, tell them you’re available if needed, and then give them space! Chasing a customer around the store sends the message that you don’t believe they have enough intelligence to make a decision without your assistance. (It’s also really annoying!) Staying visible, but not too close, allows the customer to summon you as needed, giving them a sense of control over the situation, making them more likely to have a positive experience. Now let’s pause for a second and go back to the smiling part. Unfortunately, service with a smile is severely lacking in this generation, even in our beloved community. Let’s up the smile factor, make a kiddush Hashem, and make people feel they are important. After all, we are enjoined to be mekabel es kol ha’adam b’sever panim yafos!

don’t forget your bedding basics! Your first stop for: comforters, pillows, mattress pads, pillow protectors, & more

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION As with every relationship, effective communication between sales staff and customers is vital. But the key to building a really great sales team is an indepth understanding of the components of this particular relationship. Let’s break it down. SUBSERVIENCE The customer is not your friend; the customer is someone who is deserving of kavod. This can’t be enunciated enough. When a customer walks into your store, they have chosen to (potentially) give you money. They are doing you a favor. In return, they deserve quality. Quality communication, quality service. Poor sales help will just name an aisle number or point in the direction of an item when asked. Don’t do that! Be prepared to run around the store, pulling out products as needed. In fact, Target has an official policy of walking a customer — or, guest, as they say — to the requested product for a reason. It’s just the right thing to do! LISTEN, QUESTION, SHOW When a customer is looking for a particular item, listen carefully to what they desire. If you don’t fully understand what they need, ask questions to clarify and show items that will qualify. Point out various features, and yes, point out possible flaws as well. Nobody wants to go home and find out that their purchase isn’t what they expected, or worse, that the salesperson lied to them! When showing a product, don’t offer your opinion unless it’s requested. Ever! Stick to the facts. Per-

FOR THE BOSS So you want to see your sales soar... Empower your sales staff to do their job in the best way possible. • Make sure there is enough staff to handle the flow of customers. • Don’t have sales staff do jobs like stocking or labeling as an official requirement. The stress may cause them to not be available for customers as needed. They should, however, be in charge of tidying their areas, and can help out with labeling/stocking in a pinch, during quiet times. • Treat your staff the way you want them to treat customers. • Make sure your sales help have adequate breaks, otherwise you might find them eating at their stations, which is a big no-no. • Give bonuses, lunches or other incentives as tokens of appreciation after a great sales week; it will motivate your staff to keep up the great work. • Be generous with compliments, stingy with criticism, and always set a good example.

sonal tastes and current styles vary. It’s not your place to tell a customer that what they like isn’t nice — or what they don’t, is. If you really don’t have what the customer is looking for, but you do know where they can find it, tell them. Even if it’s your number-one competitor. That’s called going the extra mile. You may not make the sale, but you’ll have made an impression that will be remembered. They’ll be back. NEVER COMMENT ON A CUSTOMER’S APPEARANCE Comments like, “That really slims you down!” may seem like the right thing to say, but it’s wrong, wrong, wrong! Such a comment is called a backhanded compliment; you’ve just openly admitted that you don’t find the customer’s natural appearance flattering. It’s the same thing as saying, “Oh, those glasses make your nose look smaller” or “Such a nice outfit makes me barely notice your buck teeth!” Just don’t.

100 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 15, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Okay? USE POSITIVE LANGUAGE In general, stick to positive language. Don’t say things like, “I don’t know” or “We don’t have.” Stick to “I’ll find out” or “We’ll be getting it back in stock…” or “Everyone bought them, but maybe you’d

like…” Yes, such language increases your job responsibility, but it also increases your sales! And that’s your goal, right? BE SEEN BUT NOT HEARD Having good relationships with your coworkers is important, but when you have customers near you,

don’t shmooze. It’s rude, makes them feel excluded from your little club, increases the leave-withoutbuying risk, and causes them to feel guilt if they interrupt you for help. It also slows you down! When you’ve got a line of customers and you’re talking with your coworker (or worse, on the phone!), you aren’t working at top speed. I promise. In fact, you’re probably going really, really slowly. And making mistakes. If a customer wants to shmooze, on the other hand, keep it cordial but short — especially when there’s a line. And use positive language to wrap up. No I’m sorrys or excuse mes, because they’ll feel guilty for having taken your time. Do use phrases like, “Thanks so much for asking. I really enjoyed talking to you!” or “Thanks for a great conversation. I’d love to hear more next time you’re here. Have a great day!” Most people think “selling” is the same as “talking.” But the most effective salespeople know that listening is the most important part of their job. – Roy Bartell

CLOSING THE DEAL In general, knowing how to close is important. You want to make sure your client is walking out satisfied. When they’re ready to pay, ask them if they found everything they needed, or if you’re working the sales floor, ask them, “Is there anything else I can do for you?” before walking off. Thank the person for their business before they leave. And of course, always, always give the customer a bracha for a beautiful day. (Unless you sell matzevos, grave plots, or something else in which joviality may not be appreciated. Then please, do modify your message accordingly.) Keep in mind that you’re not just making a sale; you’re making a customer. You don’t close a sale; you open a relationship if you want to build a long-term, successful enterprise. – Patricia Fripp

3 Considerations For Sustainable

Health!

“What is your approach to healthy living? We have This is hard. spent so much money on different diets. I want to make sure this is something that is going to work!” Health can't be bought. It can't be forced upon. It Mrs Weinstein's asked. has to come from with in. Here is the hardship. Healthy living is a challenge. A really big challenge. The main reason why it is a challenge is because we are choosing to view the situation as one. If the change is the view what formed our view in th e first place? Everything. Everything that happens in our lives shapes our idea about what is truth in the world. What we believe to be truth - whether it is or isn't - shapes the way we view the world. This explains the placebo effect. How people have healed all thanks to a doctor who told them that form of medicine would work even though the pills were nothing more than sugar. The type of culture that is around us is one that suggests money can fix anything. Have an issue throw some money at it and the problem goes away. The only problem is you can't buy health. Let us take buying a car as an example, the hardest bit is deciding which make and model you will chose. Once you have chosen, the pain of parting with your money might arise but is quickly subsided by the pleasure of driving a brand new car in all its glory. When it comes to your health it doesn't work like that. Putting money down doesn't mean you automatically get what you paid for.

kind of results. Only to find out that the results we were hoping for is quite pan out. Specifically long term.

“Shessh, I get it. I can’t just buy my health. I need to work on it. But what is your plan that I need to work on?”

But by taking the time out to asking the right questions; work on developing the right to tools that will allow you to strengthen your weakness,

As understandable as this question is it is one that cannot be answered.

Imagine what type of program you could create with the in-depth knowledge of health and the knowle dge of yourself as a person.

There is no one way to success. There is no right way. There is only the way that works for you. Seeing as everyone is different and lead unique lives knowing exactly what you need to do is impossible to know until we have a clear picture of: What type of person you are (What triggers you? What motivate you?). Your past (What strategies did and didn't work? What lessons can we take to help achieve success? What obstacles can we by-step by asking the right questions?) Your goals (What needs to happen in order for you to know that you achieved success?) Without this level of understanding it becomes a bit challenging to truly create a personalized plan. Don't be fooled. Even the perfect plan is still not going to be a step by step guide. A guide that is going to tell you exactly what you need to do at every moment. Li fe is unpredictable. Life comes with its challenges. The only thing you can do is arm yourselves with the tools you need to live a fulfilled life. The way we know what you need is through assessing. The challenge that many of us face is not being aware in regards to most of the things we mentioned above.

To get the results you have to put in the work. You have to change what you are doing on a daily For that very reason we go running to the most basis. popular health program at the time, expecting al l

THE RIBNITZ REBBE TOOK CARE OF ME “I’d like to share with you the reason why I chose a Tehillim Kollel membership at the Tzion of the Ribnitz Rebbe. When I was a young boy, I was born into a beautiful family, filled with Talmidei Chachamim. My fathers, my brothers, they all excelled at their learning. But I was different. I tried really hard but I could never be like them. I wasn’t born with the same talents. My father was always disappointed in me. During the years of my struggle, I frequently visited the Ribnitz Rebbe and poured out my heart and all my pain. The Rebbe was always warm and encouraging, and by the end of the visit, I felt uplifted and comforted. My father never knew about these times.” “Later on, I went to learn in Eretz Yisroel and I continued to maintain a personal connection with the Ribnitz Rebbe. I was very saddened by his Petirah, feeling like I lost a person who truly cared about me.” “One day, my father called me and asked, “You know the Ribnitz Rebbe?” I was so surprised. I asked, “Why, how do you know?” He shared with me that an old friend from his yeshiva days, who he hadn’t seen in 20 years, called him up, with regards for me from the Ribnitz Rebbe. This friend had a dream in which the Ribnitz Rebbe told him, “Call up your friend Avraham and tell him that his son Shmuel is going to be okay. He is a good boy and he will see a lot of nachas from him.” “My father is Avraham. I am Shmuel. The Ribnitz Rebbe continued to take care of me and look out for me, after his Petira! And that’s why I chose a membership at his Tzion. I am sharing this story so that others know. If you develop a connection with the Rebbe, if you daven at his Kever or send messengers to daven for you through Tehillim Kollel, he will take care of you too.”

Dear Sainsbury’s, three-year-old Lily Robinson wrote (with the help of her parents). Why is tiger bread called tiger bread? It should be called giraffe bread. And her claim was far from wrong. It was plain to see that the bread that Sainsbury’s Supermarket in London named after the largest cat species had no stripes, but rather resembled the giraffe’s unique blotches. But who takes such a young cusSainsbury’s tiger bread, now known as giraffe bread tomer seriously? Sainsbury’s customer support manager did, and wrote back a letter complimenting Lily on her letter and explaining the origins of the name: “I think renaming tiger bread giraffe bread is a brilliant idea — it looks much more like the blotches on a giraffe than the stripes on a tiger, doesn’t it? It is called tiger bread because the first baker who made it a loooong time ago thought it looked stripey like a tiger. Maybe they were a bit silly.” And he included a 3-pound gift voucher. It didn’t end there, though. Sainsbury’s ended up not only changing the name of the bread to giraffe bread, but also placed notices around the stores, bringing attention to the story and to the fact that the name was changed. Overdone? Perhaps, but it got many people to talk about the pains Sainsbury’s took to heed even the advice of one of their youngest customers. They got a great deal of publicity — and many impressed and amused customers. “Well done is better than well said,” Benjamin Franklin said, and nothing demonstrates that better than customer service. Read on about how some business’s actions proved their high standard of customer service.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

THE RITZ-CARLTON The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is probably the most frequently cited model of customer service, and this anecdote gives us an idea why. The Hurn family, who had stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Florida, came home to discover that their son’s stuffed giraffe was missing. Their son, who was very attached to “Joshie,” was inconsolable. The parents were finally able to calm their son down when they told him that his toy was taking an extended vacation. The father reached out to the hotel, who located the stuffed animal in the laundry room and handed it over to the hotel’s Loss Prevention Team. Several days later, Joshie arrived at the Hurn home with an album featuring pictures of him enjoying the hotel. The stuffed giraffe was photographed at the pool, with other stuffed animals, on a golf cart, and a staff ID badge was even issued for him! The young boy was thrilled to be united with his friend some six years ago, but at this point, the album is surely something he appreciates. (This story has a sequel. Joshie was later lost for good at a different hotel, and the Hurns mentioned it to the staff at the Ritz Carlton the next time they stayed there, thanking them for the efforts they had put into finding him. Later that day, the little boy received a wrapped package containing a similar stuffed giraffe whom the hotel staff hoped he’d befriend.)

SPOTLIGHT ON:

SNAPPLE The Real Facts hidden under Snapple covers are not often able to be proved or disproved. Who is to say whether a duck’s quack echos or not, how many noses slugs have and what attracts mosquitoes? But one day, a principal shared some Real Facts with his students, and they came across the fact, “It is impossible for humans to lick their elbows.” Naturally, each student (and some teachers) tried doing just that within seconds. None of them could, except for one 10-year-

old boy. The staff contacted Snapple, who took the claim seriously. So seriously, in fact, that they sent down a company representative to see the boy actually lick his elbow! The representative not only made a big deal of it, but rewarded the boy with a Snapple backpack and three cases of his favorite drink. (I bet you tried it now too, and saw that you won’t be getting free cases anytime soon.)

SPOTLIGHT ON:

OPRYLAND HOTEL A hotel customer stayed at this resort at three different occasions, and found herself entranced by the light music the alarm clock in the room played. For a long time, she tried to find the exact model clock she had enjoyed in her hotel room, but couldn’t get her hands on it. On her next visit to the hotel, she decided to inquire about where she’d be able to purchase a model like it, only to learn that it wasn’t available for sale. Later, she returned to her room to find two of those clocks with her name and a note on them!

SPOTLIGHT ON:

TRADER JOE’S With the snow coming down and promising to get even worse, an 89-year-old was worried about stocking up on food. His daughter desperately tried several stores in the area, finally reaching someone at Trader Joe’s who informed her that they didn’t offer delivery of goods, but given the circumstances, will make an exception. They took a list from the daughter, made suggestions for additional low-sodium items, and less than thirty minutes later, delivered the order to the man’s doorstep — without charging him a cent.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

B. DALTON BOOKSELLER Before B. Dalton was acquired by Barnes and Nobles, a customer visited the store for a specific book she urgently needed. Though they didn’t have the book in stock, the B. Dalton representative still wanted to make the customer happy, prompting her to do the unexpected: She called a nearby competing bookstore to reserve a book for the customer and then printed directions for the customer so she could pick it up. They didn’t make a sale, but they surely earned a customer!

An 11-year-old boy with Asperger’s Syndrome had finally saved up enough money to buy a Lego Emerald Night Train set, only to discover that it had been discontinued. Devastated, he wrote a letter to Lego, telling them how he had saved up money and how badly he wanted that specific set. Several days before his birthday, a package arrived for him. In it was the discontinued train set, along with a personal letter from Lego.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

KROGER PHARMACY When a pharmacist at Kroger in Georgia overheard a customer trying to calm down her daughter who was afraid of “monsters” at night, she had the perfect solution. She busied herself behind the counter and then handed the daughter a spray bottle that had a custom pharmacy label on which it said: “Spray once a day to avoid monsters.” The mother had the kind pharmacist to thank when her daughter slept soundly through the night in her new “big girl” room.

CONTAC TING CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH A COMPLAINT?

DON’T VENT If you are extremely frustrated or upset, first vent to someone else to get it out of your system, and then write a confident and calm letter. Never “shout” by using uppercase lettering, or write an angry, sarcastic or threatening letter.

KEEP IT SHORT Include only relevant details. There’s no need to expand on every emotion you felt and minute you spent. Short letters will be read.

BE CLEAR Include serial and model numbers, time of purchase, receipt, name and location of seller, etc. Don’t forget your contact information, and if you’re following up on a conversation, be clear as to whom you spoke to in the past.

STATE YOUR EXPECTATIONS Spell out what it is that you expect of the company. Be reasonable, and let the damage match the refund you are asking for.

SANDWICH Start with something positive, expressing how pleased you are with a service, how impressed you were in the past, the good experiences you had, etc. Only then write your complaint. End off with something positive too.

May one remove a stain from clothing on Shabbos? Cute little Avromie, all dressed up for Shabbos with his sparkling new white shirt, refuses to wear a bib because he is a big boy like Tatty — and Tatty doesn’t wear a bib! Well, Big Boy Avromie gets a big stain on his Shabbos shirt and is crying. What should we do? Washing a stain involves three steps: wetting, scrubbing and squeezing out water. The melachah of melabein forbids any of these steps on cloth-like materials that absorb water. So, one can neither wet nor scrub a stain to get it out. But there is a permissible way to go about treating a stain! One is allowed to remove the top part of the stain that hasn’t been absorbed into the material, with one’s nails or the back of a knife, as long as an absorbed layer of the stain in the entire area of the stain is left over. But to remove also the bottom layer, even in one part of the stain, is always forbidden.1 The poskim also point out that when removing the top part of a dry stain, one must also be wary of the melachah of tochein. So if the stain is dry mud, then it would be assur to remove it in a way that one will crush the mud into small pieces.2 Only things that the melachah of tochein doesn’t apply to (e.g., food that one once crushed, based on the principle that there is no tochein after tochein3) may be treated in the ways described above, even if one will inevitably come to crush them.4 So even with this muttar way to treat a stain, little (or is it big?) Avromie’s shirt still won’t be sparkling clean. So we can either get Tatty to also wear a bib every Shabbos to convince Avromie to do so as well, or we can try to prove to Avromie from before Shabbos that having a stained shirt will make him look more like a baby than wearing a bib will. The bottom line is that the best way to deal with stains on Shabbos is to prevent them from happening in the first place.

May one shake dust off from clothing on Shabbos? Now Avromie, continuing his mission of trying to be big like Tatty, decides to wear Tatty’s hat and jacket. In all his excitement, he drops them on the floor, and now they are all dusty. What should we do? As mentioned above, one is not allowed to get the dust off by wetting it or scrubbing it, since on cloth-like materials, these are considered melabein. But may one shake it off? The halacha states that one is not allowed to shake his clothes to get dust off from them since the dust penetrates the cloth, and removing it is considered melabein.5 This issur only applies to clothing that one is makpid on cleaning before going out.6 The poskim, though, say that since we are no longer experts in what is considered a beged that one is makpid on, it is correct to refrain from dusting all clothing.7 This is especially true for one’s Shabbos clothes, which one is generally makpid on being clean before going out.8 Therefore, the poskim say that one should be careful to

put his clothing in a place where they will not become dusty9 — both because of kavod Shabbos, and also because it is almost instinctive to dust them. So it may be worthwhile to get little Avromie one of Tatty’s old hats to play with on Shabbos… The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 302:7; see Mishnah Berurah 302:36 and Biur Halacha there. This is unlike the shitah of the Taz. See Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 302:7 where it says one may also turn the cloth inside out and fold it in such a way that the stain is on the outside of the fold. One may then rub it from the inside causing the stain to peel off on its own. Here, too, this is only if even after cleaning it there still remains an absorbed layer of the stain in the entire area of the stain.

1

Since this is a melacha sh’einah tzricha legufah, the Mishnah Berurah allows one to do it through a goy if there is a question of kavod haberiyos (Shaar Hatzion 302:44). The Ketzos Hashulchan (siman 129, Badei Hashulchan 16) says that the reason why mud is not considered something that was already nitchan is because this principle only applies to foods.

PROBIOTICS, THE 21ST CENTURY’S ANTIBIOTICS, VERY PREVALENT IN YOGURTS, NORMAN’S SAYS Rutherford, NJ – Yogurt is the leading natural source of Probiotics eaten by Americans, according to various health studies. The emphasis on Probiotics is a priority at Norman’s, the sole Cholov Yisroel Company that offers this revolutionary and groundbreaking yogurt to its customers. Probiotics (beneficial bacteria) play an important role in supporting digestive and immune health. The digestive system is responsible for over 70% of a body’s immune health. Antibiotics, poor diets, age, stress, travel, and illness kill these beneficial bacteria. Consuming probiotic foods on a daily basis helps restore them, leading to improved overall health and well-being. Many yogurt lovers will be shocked to discover that most yogurts claiming to contain active live cultures do not actually contain adequate amounts of active probiotics. This is partly due to processing and temperature

changes, but mainly because of prolonged shelf life. Some live probiotic culture strains die as time goes by, which leaves yogurt with insignificant amounts of active live cultures by the time they reach your refrigerator. Norman’s commitment to providing the highest quality Greek yogurt led to the creation of the Greek Pro+ Yogurt line with the unique and exclusive GanedenBC30 Probiotic Culture. GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulants GBI-30, 6086) is a patented unique probiotic strain that naturally forms a protective spore (like a seed that starts germinating in your body) which allows it to survive the processing, heat/cold, time, and everything in between, completely intact. Realizing that many consumers purchase yogurt specifically for its probiotic nature, Norman’s Dairy created a yogurt with GanedenBC30® to give consumers 100% active and living cultures. Greek Pro+ guarantees an efficacious

dose of probiotics from the moment the cups are filled, until the yogurt reaches the eater’s mouth. What’s more - GanedenBC30® is supported by rigorous safety and efficacy research. This means that with a concentration of 1 billion CFU’s per cup it actually does what it claims, supporting digestive and immune health, as well as protein utilization. It’s no wonder Greek Pro+ has been met with rave reviews! Naturally sweetened with Stevia and free of artificial color or flavoring, Norman’s Greek Pro+ comes in four mouth-watering flavors – blueberry, acai & pomegranate, cool key lime, vanilla bean, and strawberry redcurrant. For further information about Norman’s Greek Pro+ line and all their other kosher Cholov Yisroel products, check out - www.normansdairy.com and for additional background on GanedenBC30, check out www.GanedenBC30. com.

In the final article in this series we wish to share with the readers some insight on the gift of nature. Long before COMMSAR members take on professional training in search and rescue, they come to appreciate and respect Hashem’s beautiful natural world. We can identify with Reb Avigdor Miller’s renowned passion for nature. “There is a spiritual quality in everything in the world. As you pass a tree, know that it has a certain spiritual quality; it represents what we are looking for. If we could stop and think about that tree for weeks and months, we would come so close to Hashem that we would be on the verge of prophecy.” Reb Avigdor Miller, zt”l, in Most Beautiful Nation

Summer ’18 PSAR (Preventative Search & Rescue) Campaign by COMMSAR

Speaking the language of nature has a huge edge when it comes to the business of SAR (Search And Rescue). It’s easier to teach a frum nature-lover all about SAR than it is to teach an emergency response guy to love nature. When you love nature you learn how to read the woods. You know the deciduous trees from the evergreens. You know the difference between brooks and creeks. You know the difference between magnetic north and true north. When disaster strikes and you need to improvise with a given weather condition, challenging terrain or limited supplies, being a man of the woods makes all the difference. At COMMSAR, it makes all the difference in the demeanor of our personal and professional lives. And now we wish to give you a taste of it. Nature is in our DNA; it’s the way we’ve lived for thousands of years. More than 99 percent of our history was spent in natural environments. Even a large metropolis was drenched in nature (pave-less roads; firewood-heated ovens; hand-washed laundry at the riverbank, etc.). Modernity has not rewired our brain; we’re simply putting stress on our minds and bodies because we are nature-starved. Nature teaches us about discipline, creativity, survival and self-esteem, and has a calming effect that brings us

back to our happy, childish baseline. Rashi on Mishlei (15:30) relates that gazing at a garden or flowing river is a delight to, and has the power to cleanse sadness from, one’s heart. Shlomo Hamelech, the wisest of all, foretold this (in Mishlei above) thousands of years before the age of heated leather seats. Today, “the sadness of one’s heart” would be translated as depression. Depression is a state of being stuck in the past; an inability to move forward beyond a sad point in one’s life. Depression’s cousin is anxiety. Anxiety is the mind’s inclination to think of the future, and to think of it in a worrisome way. The common denominator of anxiety and depression is the inability to ARE YOU SEARCH stay in the present AND RESCUE MATEmoment. ity... a calmer reality, a reality that has more tolerance for the past and the future because you’re now more comfortable with the present and with yourself. That’s it. That’s mindfulness. It’s that simple. It’s that powerful. The truth is that we can find nature everywhere. We can relish a nice sunset — not just on a mountaintop. How about studying the ice formations on a leaf? Raising kids to be nature-minded is healthy and necessary. Richard Louv coined the medical-sounding phrase “Nature-Deficit Disorder.” In his book Last Child in the Woods he makes the case, backed by extensive research, that a wide range of behavioral problems stem from spending little time outdoors. The title of a 2012 Outside Magazine article sums it up well: “Take Two Hours of Pine Forest and Call Me in the Morning.” In the article the writer echoes the notion that “screenaddicted Americans are more stressed-out and distracted than ever… But there is a radically simple remedy: Get outside.” When we let our kids sip hot chocolate while watching the sun rise on a cold winter morning, they will learn to appreciate the free gifts of life and have less expectations for materialistic objects. Try it. The Baal Shem did not do hisbodedus in a city backstreet, and Reb Avigdor Miller did not grow by studying pollution. Rather, he did so by seeing the wonders of Hashem in a flower, in an orange and in a raindrop. Which leads us to our final word of caution: When turning to nature, one must be exceptionally mindful to heed safety precautions. People enjoy “getting lost” in the moment when doing meditation, and it has happened more than once that COMMSAR got called out by a worried wife to search for someone “doing hisbodedus” in the woods. We hope you’ve enjoyed this series and invite you to learn more about COMMSAR, nature and safety. You can do so by texting the word COMMSAR to 22828 or emailing us at email@commsar.org. D O O W G N I R STATE PARK When we start inching our way toward the end of the summer, there’s an urge to max out on the outdoors, to visit green spaces, to bask in the sun and water, to smell the flowers before they shrivel. To take in all the greenery before they shed their chlorophyll and turn into stunning fall foliage. Ringwood State Park, spread over 4,444 acres and offering several different sections for summer relaxation, is just twenty minutes away and a great destination to visit still this summer. And if you don’t make it there soon, it’s a beautiful autumn spot, too. Please note: Ringwood State Park is a carry in–carry out facility, and all trash should be taken home with you.

Shepherd Lake Road (follow signs off Morris Road), Ringwood, NJ 07456 25 minutes 973-962-2256 (boat rental) There’s sometimes a $10 parking fee for non-residents. Boat rentals are between $15 and $26 per hour, and some are available for the day for $60. Since no swimming is allowed at the lake this season, the spring-fed water of Shepherd Lake is a perfect summer destination. There’s a large barbecue area at the lake for grilling and picnicking. There are also boat rentals on the lake — kayaks, canoes, rowboats (and if you’re lucky, a pontoon, which is usually out) — as well as a boat launch.

There are many marked trails to hike, ranging from moderate to difficult, that connect the Ringwood and Skylands sections of the park. One moderate trail, which starts behind the Ringwood Manor House, is fun and beautiful for the entire family and is only 1.5 miles long with gentle elevation changes. The markings of the trail are blue, but are not so clear in a few places, so make sure to get a trail map at the manor house.

OF GAINS...

WALMART: The Largest Retailer in the World IN PROFITS For the fiscal year that ended on January 31, 2018, Walmart’s total revenues amounted to $500.3 billion! This placed the company (again) at the top of the list of large retailers in terms of sales, profits, assets and value.

IN NUMBERS As of the same date, Walmart boasted 6,360 locations worldwide (4,761 in the U.S. alone) and employed over 2.2 million people. That’s why, in the U.S., Walmart holds claim to the title of “largest private employer.”

After Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, worked hard at purchasing and raising the profits of franchise stores for almost twenty years, he opened the first Walmart store on July 2, 1962. He turned the chain into an immediate success by finding U.S. suppliers who would

agree to match the prices of foreign suppliers by selling him merchandise for all locations. Mr. Walton also paid great attention to the logistics of delivery and transportation and made sure each location was less than a day’s drive away from regional warehouses. That is also

the reason Walmart owns its own trucking service. However, while they brought enormous savings to the consumer, Walmart was (and still is) notorious for effectively closing the small mom-and-pop shops in each town they introduced a superstore.

Today, Sam Walton’s daughter is the second richest woman in the world, with her assets totalling some $33.8 billion! Her two brothers aren’t faring too badly either…

According to a study by two geographers at the University of Kentucky, “Fully 60 percent of the entire U.S. population lives within 5 miles of a Walmart location, and 96 percent are within 20 miles.”

Walmart’s most popular item? Bananas! They sell about 1 billion (!) pounds of bananas annually worldwide. In the words of company spokesman Brooke Buchanan, "Customers love bananas because they're an easy, healthy food to pack and eat and very affordable.” 132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 15, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

...AND LOSSES

In the business world today, brickand-mortar stores are suffering, only this time, it’s not only the small mom-and-pop shops that are forced to declare defeat. Barely managing to keep up with online competition, many large chain stores found it necessary to close a portion of their locations. Some, as in the case of Toys “R” Us, Payless ShoeSource, RadioShack and Claire's, were even forced to declare bankruptcy. A few struggling retailers: Rite Aid: closing 600 of 4,536 stores The Children’s Place: closing 300 of 1,014 stores Best Buy: closing 257 of 1,008 stores Gap Inc.: closing 200 of 2,600 stores (in the U.S.) Crocs: closing 160 of 447 Foot Locker: closing 110 of 1,835 Michael Kors: closing 100-125 of 429 Abercrombie and Fitch: closing 60 of 679 Sears: closing 39 of 570

The Oldest Department Store in the U.S. While they are the oldest department store, Lord & Taylor, established in 1826, can’t hold claim as the oldest retailer; Brooks Brothers (est. 1818) gets that honor. However, Lord & Taylor can take second place. Macy’s followed in 1858, Saks Fifth Avenue in 1867 and Sears in 1886. Founder Samuel Lord began dealing in dry goods in 1824, and two years later, in 1826, opened the shop that would later be the first Lord & Taylor store. In 1834, Lord’s cousin George Washington Taylor joined the business, and Lord & Taylor was born. In addition to being the oldest department store, Lord & Taylor was the first shop on Fifth Avenue, and also, most impressively, the first to install an elevator. In addition, it was the first store to offer personal shopping services, with salespeople walking the floors, and was soon also the first to open a branch store. The location of the very first Lord & Taylor store

The Largest Retail Store in the World In 2009, Macy’s in NYC lost its distinction as the world’s largest store, and handed the title to Shinsegae Centum City Department Store, located in Busan, South Korea. And Macy’s didn’t lose that status over a few negligible feet; the Shinsegae store’s 3.163 million square feet exceeded Macy’s by more than a million square feet!

Such tremendous square footage means that Shinsegae is larger than most U.S. malls, and as one would imagine, the inside of this retailer indeed resembles a mall more than a simple shop. With its endless list of unusual departments and amenities, Shinsegae takes the term “department store” to the next level and features a dry cleaners, shoe

The police are onto us! Hmmm…Henrik was right to be suspicious. It’s a good thing they escaped in time. The police won’t find anything now.

The police are knocking. I hope they don’t notice that my whole body is shaking…

Hello. Release the children here immediately. This missionary operation is illegal.

What? Children? What are you talking about?

Why are you here? I’m an elderly widow. I’ve never been involved in anything illegal!

In the meantime, at the antimissionary organization...

You’ll see. I’ll search your house. You know that it’s not worth it to conceal information.

Such tension. The police should have stormed the house by now. Why aren’t they calling from Zurich? I’m waiting to hear that the children were freed!

Everything is really fine. There’s no sign of the children or of anything criminal.

Recap: The police surround the house in Zurich where the children are being kept and prepare to enter.

The Different Styles of Monsey Homes Exploring architectural structures in our area BROUGHT TO YOU BY: YOEL GORALNIK

Featured Home Style:

McMansion A McMansion is a large modern suburban home built in an extravagant manner that is lacking architectural integrity. This means that it has no clear architectural style and uses exterior and interior materials that don’t necessarily belong together.

The turret, pillars and the Palladian window are all common features of a McMansion.

This Mcmansion has a facade of finer materials, hiding the cheap exterior at the side and back of the home.

FYI: One McMansion in Washington stood so close to its neighboring property that the chair of the Neighborhood Association said, “You can read the lettering on the canned vegetables in the house next door.”

146 / THE MONSEY VIEW

ATTRIBUTES: McMansions generally have between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet of floor space and 9- to 10-foot ceilings. Most are impressive in superficial appearance, but the materials used are often of low quality. The exterior may be asymmetriFYI: McMansions are cal, with different types often built en-masse of oddly placed windows, by developers over multiple chimneys, doran entire street or mers, turrets, pilasters community. and large garages (to accommodate multiple cars and SUVs). A typical McMansion has a two-story entry with a large chandelier and a Palladian window over it, and

PROS: Cheaper materials means it costs less to build and that you can have an impressive, large home for less money. The small lots McMansions are often on also translates to lower property taxes. In a nutshell, it’s a gorgeous-looking home at a reasonably affordable cost.

(A proper mansion has sufficient land around it, and isn’t just set upon a square of green.)

FYI: McMansions originated in California in the 1980s as the home in between the small, plain tract homes and the gated or waterfront communities.

CONS: Lack of quality means things will not last that long and the house will deteriorate a lot more quickly than their more upscale counterparts. The lack of specific style also compromises the beauty of its appearance. There are many critics of McMansions who feel these homes showcase faux ostentatiousness.

FYI: One major McMansion critic used pictures from Zillow to highlight the flaws in design of McMansions, prompting Zillow to launch a lawsuit against her (but they later dropped the claims).

Note the small lot and mix of materials used on the exterior of this home.
