It’s the reputation we’re proud of, and the process you trust. Since 1950, the Mendlowitz family has been providing the highest level of kashrus standards in meat. R’ Shimon Mendlowitz has developed a unique nikkur protocol that conforms to all minhagim and chumros. Our reputation for mevinus in nikkur and melicha has spread throughout the world, making us the go-to source for rabbanim, kashrus agencies and mashgiach training. Our high quality Black Angus beef is sourced from one trusted location here in the USA, carefully slaughtered under the constant supervision of our private shochet, and kashered in-house here in Monsey. And because every cut comes from the same trusted source, you know you can rely on our superb quality...

(Inbox, Issue 163) Dear Shoe Shopper, I was quite surprised when I read your letter last week. You got upset at another shopper in the shoe store who took the number of another person who had left the store. However, I found what you did just as appalling. It is unfair to other shoppers to take a number in a store, leave and return, and expect your number/slot to be saved for you. My time is just as precious as yours. When I walk into a store and see what number they are up to, I gauge my time based on how many people I see. It is not mentchlich to leave and come back with your five children when others have been waiting and assessing the time they will spend in the store based on how many people are waiting there. And the same goes for waiting in line at the supermarket. When we see a child standing in line with a few items, we tend to choose that line. How unfair is it when you come along with your bulging shopping cart and push ahead of the others already standing there to join your child who was holding only a few items? Rosh Hashanah is approaching, and we will have to give a din v’chesbon on our past deeds. Think carefully: Were you careful with the way you treated others, or did you only care about yourself? Did you cut people off when you were driving, with no patience to wait your turn, causing others to look negatively at Yidden? Did you let your baby cry in the hosiery store because you “needed” that perfect pair of matching socks and you cared more about the clothes than your baby? Let us stop before we do something and ask ourselves, “Will this make Hashem proud and bring the geulah closer?” Shulamis K., Monsey

I was disturbed to read the letter regarding the woman in the shoe store. How did you forget about “Hevei dan es kol ha’adam l’kaf zechus”? Especially now before Rosh Hashanah, when we all hope to be judged favorably and be granted a good year. If we judge people favorably here on this world, Hashem will judge us favorably from up there. A RESPONSE THAT WAS WORTH THE WAIT (RE: Worth the Wait, Issue 152) In reference to your article on procrastinators and the benefits of being one, I’d like to point out five different types of procrastinators: THE THRILL SEEKER:
Thrives under pressure and therefore derives pleasure from accomplishing lastminute work. This type of procrastinator definitely does not reach full potential, because while one may be motivated to complete a task, the impending deadline is what’s motivating them to do the work. Example: Yes, Mother. The teacher gave us two weeks to do the book report and it’s due tomorrow, but I can do it in the morning on the bus. THE AVOIDER: Fear of failure or fear of success causes one to run from the task. Example: I’ll never ace that test, so why bother studying?
Shopping at Jewel It means you can view our extensive selection minus the rush and crush of a surrounding crowd that barely lets you think. See how easy it can be to purchase a piece of jewelry you know you’ll love!

“maybe” person. Turning one’s back on a definitive “yes” or “no” leaves one fault-free should there be a negative outcome. Example:

I really don’t know which to choose, so I’ll leave the decision for tomorrow. THE PERFECTIONIST:
“Either do it perfectly, or don’t bother to begin” is their motto. Example: I’ll never make that perfect layer cake and won’t bother trying. THE BUSY PROCRASTINATOR: Prioritizing (making a
to-do list) is the cure for this type of procrastinator who simply can’t decide which task to do first. Example: There’s no way we’ll get all this done today. Let’s go shopping instead. There’s no right or wrong way to get your work done before a deadline. For some “slow and steady wins the race,” while for others a “mad-dash” approach (like pulling all-nighters the week before Pesach) is the best way to budget one’s time. Studies note that “procrastinators are made, not born.” Exposure to certain parenting styles and school or work expectations may make one want to break the mold and intentionally act out. So next time you enforce that on-the-dot bedtime, note that that’s the child who may have a laissez-faire attitude when enforcing her own little one’s bedtime. Personally, it’s my family — where a favorite motto is “Vee yugt men zich?” — for whom the “last minute” was created. To everyone’s chagrin, I am a model of punctuality. I am a do-it-now person and usually do not delay a task. When dealing with someone who doesn’t want to “yug,” let them know how important the task is to you and reinforce the expectation that the job be done by a certain time. Plan ahead with an alternate plan (just in case), thus reducing your stress level. In case you’re wondering

why I’ve procrastinated in writing this letter, I have not. I simply did not have time to leisurely read The Monsey View in depth this summer (baruch Hashem, due to simchos), and “postponed” a more deliberate perusal of my piled-up back issues until recently. On the other hand, now that I’ve begun going through the pile (an enjoyable task), I definitely see myself procrastinating with Shabbos preparations! R.S.
A TIMELY AND APPRECIATED GUIDE (RE: Fit for a King, Issue 163) The illustrations for braiding round challos were so clear and amazing. I’ve always wanted to know how to make round challos with four strands, and this made it look so easy! And I wasn’t the only one who was delighted with the feature; I was on a teleconference, and everyone was talking about how helpful your feature is, just in time for yom tov preparation. Thank you! T.J.
Thank you so much for the amazing guide on round challos and the different ways of braiding them so simply and so beautifully. I’d love to know which challah recipe Goldie uses for those fluffy, gorgeous challos. Thank you, A.M. GOLDIE ROSNER RESPONDS: This is the recipe I used for the challos in the pictures. It’s a 7-pound dough and yields seven round challos (baked in 8-inch round pans).

אליעזר בוכינגער בעסטע סערוויס !און פרייזן WE DELIVER
Ingredients: • 7 lb. high-gluten flour (sifted) • 4 oz. fresh yeast or 13.5 tsp. dry yeast (I use dry yeast) • 1 cup sugar • 4½ cups warm water (I do 2¼ cups from the perculator and 2¼ cups cold water) • 3 cups seltzer • 3 T. salt • 1 cup oil • 4 eggs, lightly beaten Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375°. 2. In the stainless steel bowl of a Bosch machine, or in a mixer bowl for dough, combine the yeast, sugar, water and seltzer. Let stand for about 5 minutes. 3. Add the oil and eggs and mix on speed 1 until just combined, about 10 seconds. 4. Add about threequarters of the flour and the salt. Mix on speed 1 for another few seconds. 5. Add the rest of the flour and mix for about 7 minutes until a smooth dough is formed. (Start mixing on speed 1, then slowly increase the speed to high.) 6. Let the dough rise for about 45 minutes or until double in size. 7. Braid the challos. Let stand another 15–20 minutes, and then baste with beaten egg. 8. Bake for 10 minutes. Then lower your oven to 350° and bake for an additional 45 minutes. (You may need to adjust the baking time according to the size of your challos.)
For a spelt dough that makes challos that look just as beautiful as the others, I use the following recipe that is so fluffy and rich, you would never believe it’s made of spelt! The dough is super easy to work with, too. Ingredients: • 5 lb. spelt flour (I use Wonderflour) • 3 cups water (2 cups hot and 1 cup cold) • 1 cup apple juice • 3 oz. yeast • ¾ cup oil • ¾ cup sugar • 2 T. salt • 3 eggs Directions: 1. Combine water, apple juice and yeast, and set aside. 2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine salt, most of the flour, eggs, sugar, oil and mix just a bit (about 15 seconds). 3. Add the rest of the flour and then the water-juice-yeast mixture. 4. Mix on speed 1 for 5 minutes, and then on speed 2 for 5 more minutes. 5. Let rise for 45 minutes. 6. Braid challos and bake in an oven that was NOT preheated, at 250° for 20 minutes and then at 350° for 30 minutes. EDITOR’S BULLETIN Since the seven-layer chocolate halva cake featured last week includes filberts, we regret omitting the fact that it was intended for Simchas Torah. For use on Rosh Hashanah or Sukkos, the nut layer can be substituted with any light sponge cake.

Managing the Impossible
W
with Rita Horowitz Rita Horowitz invites you to claim a free consultation and learn about what’s possible in the world of residential mortgages. And yes, that includes the impossible too!
ith over 20 years in the residential mortgage sector, Rita is a fixture in the finance procurement community. A veteran loan originator, she remains one of the most senior members of The Everest Equity Company—and no small contributor to its meteoric rise. “I’ve always liked the title loan ‘originator’”, says Rita with her signature affability. “Helping my clients often takes originality.” That simple statement encapsulates one of her most powerful and effective tools: Rita’s uncanny knack for truly getting to know her clients and their goals, and presenting their full financial story to enable even clients with the most unusual scenarios to find their way home. Ask Rita what her favorite part of her job is, and she says simply that she’s a homebuyer enthusiast. She takes great pleasure in getting clients approved for the home or condo they hope for (or the refinance they need), making their dream her own. And what Rita dreams comes true! That performance metric is the result of two-plus decades and two dozen-plus deep- rooted banking relationships. She has successfully closed everything from FHA loans to jumbo loans to reverse mortgages to new construction and existing condos and more, always guiding each client to the right program for their individual version of home. Does all that expertise come at a premium? Not for Rita’s clients! She is actually known for arranging some of the most competitive rates in the industry, saving her buyers thousands of dollars over the life of their loan. As her fellow professionals and colleagues attest, “Rita is a miracle worker. She has closed loans that had escaped our capabilities, because she puts in the grit and the hustle.” Her clients are also impressed to the point of compliments: “I am a seasoned residential investor, and have dealt with numerous brokers in my career. I always come back to Rita because she always comes back to me with a ‘Yes’.” That feeling of partnership and mutual ambition is what fuels Rita’s day. “There is nothing more satisfying than being a source of my clients’ financial progress and growth. I enjoy going that extra mile if it helps them get to the closing table.” Being a Rolodex of industry knowledge doesn’t hurt either, as Rita exhibits a rare fusion of old-world wisdom and actionable, contemporary insight. That makes her one of the most informed professionals in the industry—by a wide margin—and has helped her carve a niche as a nurturer and guide who positions her reputation, connections, and library of expertise in support of her clients and their needs. Small wonder she has closed $150,000,000+ in loans on behalf of thousands of families. It’s a monumental figure, sure, but one made up of many small deeds with a singular focus. Just like her client relationships.
Because to Rita, “Once a
client, always a client.”

Parshas Netzavim
By: Malka Schneps
“ROCHEL, IS THAT YOU?” Leah gaped in astonishment. “You look amazing. And you’re practically glowing!” A few years earlier, Rochel had gone through a tremendously difficult nisayon, and nobody had expected her to ever be the same again. In fact, for quite some time she hadn’t been the same. Everyone sympathized, and nobody judged. Rochel smiled at Leah and said, “I am indeed a completely different person today. Thank you for noticing.” Leah looked at Rochel, smiling after all she had been through, and wondered how she had achieved this state of genuine simcha. Rochel looked fit, energetic and happy. “Rochel, I’m so inspired by you! May I ask what you did? I want to learn from you.” “I’d be happy to help. Why don’t you come to my house and I’ll explain everything?” The two women agreed on a time to get together at Rochel’s house later that day. At the appointed time, Leah rang Rochel’s doorbell. Rochel opened the door and invited Leah in, where a vase of fresh flowers brightened the room. “You even have fresh flowers!” exclaimed Leah. “That is a gift I give myself every day when possible. I planted a garden in the backyard, and I put together a bouquet as often as I can.” “Okay, Rochel, this is beyond amazing. Please tell me how you achieved all this.” “Come, have a seat on the couch while I get a few things. I’ll explain everything.” Rochel set out two glasses and a pitcher of water, and then excused herself to get whatever it was she was going to get. Leah sat down in eager anticipation, curious about what Rochel was getting and hopeful that whatever she might learn from her could help her in her own life. A few minutes later, Rochel returned with a few well-worn journals. “Before we get to these, I want to tell you a bit of the background. You know the tragedy that I lived through. For a long time afterward, it was difficult for me to do the most basic things. I davened every day, but
114 / THE MONSEY VIEW
my heart felt dead. I forced myself to eat and drink, but my life felt empty and hopeless. This went on for months.” “Understandably,” said Leah sympathetically. “What changed?” “One day during Elul, I realized that Rosh Hashanah was approaching, and I wanted to do something positive. But I was so depressed I felt I couldn’t do much. So I decided to listen to a shiur. I lay down on the couch and put in a CD about the parsha. It was Parshas Netzavim, and the speaker said the most amazing thing. I mean, it was something I had heard countless times before, but this time it really hit home.” “What did the speaker say?” wondered Leah aloud. “Choose life,” said Rochel. “It says in Parshas Netzavim that Hashem has placed before us life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life! The change didn’t happen instantaneously, but something woke up in me that day. I wasn’t choosing life — I was choosing the opposite. I knew I had to change, so I bought this.” Rochel took one of the journals and showed Leah what was inside. “Every day, I made a list of what I wanted to accomplish that day. I decided I wanted to say Tehillim every day like I used to. I started out saying one kapitel a day. Now I finish the entire Sefer Tehillim every week, and I daven Shacharis and Mincha as well. I also make sure to exercise every day, and I write about something positive that happens each day, so I can see Hashem’s Hand in my life. Go ahead, look through it,” added Rochel. Leah took the journal. On each page, Rochel had listed her goals, followed by little check boxes. The first few pages had very little on them. Daven. Eat breakfast. Say one kapitel of Tehillim. That was all. Many pages later, the list had grown. By the third journal, Leah noticed that the list often took up more than one page. Rochel was exercising, eating healthy, and doing chesed. Little by little, page by page, Rochel had become a new person. “Thank you so much for sharing this with me, Rochel. I hope you don’t mind, but I need to go to the store now. I plan to buy a journal like yours. I want to choose life too!”

Cover Blown: Sign Warns Motorists of Plainclothes Officer Conducting Route 306 Traffic Safety Campaign Efforts to promote greater pedestrian safety have become the talk of the town in recent days after one local resident held up a sign warning drivers of a plainclothes officer conducting a traffic detail in the heart of downtown Monsey. The Ramapo Police Department has run multiple safety campaigns designed to educate drivers about New York State law that requires them to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk, issuing warnings to offenders as well as pamphlets on the rules of the road. In recent weeks, however, the warnings have escalated to summonses, with plainclothes officers stationed at key locations stepping out into the crosswalk as cars approach, giving tickets to drivers who fail to yield. The most recent traffic detail was held on Thursday, August 30, at the corner of Route 306 and Grove Street. One unnamed
local man who saw numerous cars being pulled over by police decided to warn drivers of the officer stationed near the crosswalk and held up a cardboard sign bearing the words “cop hiding.” Eventually the plainclothes officer became aware of the sign, and good-naturedly took pictures with the sign-holder. Despite the heads-up, the Ramapo Police Department said that 30 cars still failed to yield to the plainclothes officer in the crosswalk. The traffic detail generated an outcry, with some protesting what they called “gotcha” tactics, while others thanked police for promoting greater pedestrian safety. Expressing his appreciation to police for their efforts after the traffic detail, the man holding the sign noted that the public needs to be better educated about traffic safety laws and said
that his sign was meant to be a “gentle reminder” to drivers and was not intended to undermine police efforts. The Ramapo Police Department used pictures of the “cop hiding” sign to further promote its traffic detail, explaining that its purpose is not to write tickets, but to protect pedestrians. In an official statement, the department said that in addition to ticketing drivers, it has dedicated significant efforts to educational safety campaigns. “Since 2012, officers have taught more than 20,000 public and private school students about pedestrian safety. Officers have also attended numerous community events to promote pedestrian safety. RPD is very proud of our efforts on all fronts when it comes to reducing deaths and injuries on our roadways. Rest assured our efforts to keep you safe will continue.”
Water Main Breaks and Gas Leak Create Headaches for Area Residents It was a week for the books in the Monsey area, with back-toback problems: snarling traffic and many left without water. The first problem struck on August 28, when contractors doing work hit a natural gas line in front of 156 Route 59. The Ramapo Police Department closed Route 59 between Augusta and Remsen Avenues as a crew from Orange and Rockland Utilities repaired the damaged pipe,
126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 5, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
leaving area residents with no gas for the duration of their work. Just one day later, a water main break in Montebello had residents of Airmont, Monsey, Montebello, New Hempstead, New Square, Pomona, Spring Valley and Wesley Hills starting their day with little or no water, while others complained that their water was brown. According to News 12, approximately
30 homes in the area were left without water as crews raced to repair the broken 120-inch pipe. And after a blissfully quiet day on August 30, the last day of the month had the water woes returning, this time with a water main break in front of Pomona Middle School. Police closed Pomona Road for several hours while repairs were made, diverting all traffic through the school’s parking lot.

Sweet Barbeque
Brisket
Try this full-flavored oven-cooked barbecue brisket. It is one of the most delectable meat dishes I’ve tasted. The spice rub and the tangy sauce work very well together here, packing the meat with flavor.
with Tangy Caramelized Onions
Brisket in
Sixty Seconds Brisket is a cut of meat from the lower chest of either beef cattle or veal. Since a cow has no collar bone, and 60 percent of its weight is carried by the muscles in that area, the large amount of connective tissue in the muscle (and its high collagen) requires slow cooking on a low temperature to break it down. The main advantage of this cut is that it yields a gelatinous dish, which is extra-tasty with amazing flavor. Brisket is sold as first and second cut. First-cut brisket is flat and lean. It is much less flavorful than the second cut, which is smaller but fattier. With any cut, fattier meat will always produce a tastier product, as fat is flavor.

INGREDIENTS
2 T. flour (for the oven bag)
2 extra-large Spanish onions, cut into half-moon shapes
3 lb. brisket
¼ cup olive oil
Oven bag
5 cloves garlic, crushed
SPICE RUB 1 T. kosher salt
½ tsp. paprika
1 T. Gefen cracked mixed peppercorns
½ tsp. garlic powder ½ tsp. onion powder
¼ tsp. smoked paprika
SAUCE ¾ cup white vinegar
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup apricot jam
1 T. Dijon mustard
DIRECTIONS 1. Place the flour in the oven bag and shake it up. (This will prevent the bag from bursting open.) Set aside. 2. In a small bowl, add all the spices and mix well. Rub it well onto the entire surface of the brisket. 3. Heat the olive oil in a skillet. When the oil is at smoking point, add the brisket and sear for 4 minutes on each side. Remove from skillet and set aside. 4. In the same skillet, place the onions and garlic (there will be enough fat from the meat to saute in). Saute on medium flame until lightly golden. 5. In another bowl, combine the sauce ingredients and mix well. 6. Place the onions, garlic and all released juices into the oven bag. Add the meat and the sauce. Close the bag with the (oven-safe) tie. Cut six slits on the top of the bag, and place the bag into a deep 9x13 pan. 7. Bake on 350° for 2½ hours.

One of the best meat-preparation inventions is the oven bag. It keeps the meat moist and releases more juice than any other method. And the best part? It keeps the oven clean!
Refrigerate the cooked meat in the bag overnight, and then slice against the grain. Place slices into a 9x13 pan, pour the sauce over it, cover the pan well and freeze. Before serving, reheat on 350° until hot.

London Broil
with Chestnut-Mushroom Reduction As we prepare for yom tov, we’re all in search of a good, juicy roast that’s different than our standard go-tos. This recipe yields a roast that is so tender it literally melts in the mouth, and its sauce has intense flavor and great texture. Try it yourself!
London Broil in
Sixty Seconds London broil is actually not a specific cut, but a preparation and cooking method for tougher cuts of meat usually taken from the cattle’s shoulder, a category referred to as chuck. Because the animal constantly uses its shoulder muscles, chuck contains a high percentage of connective tissue and is quite tough. However, it is one of the most flavorful cuts. Chuck primal yields several cuts, among them pot roast, stew meat, London broil, minute roast, chuck roast and kalichal. Chuck is usually best when prepared with moist heat cooking, stewing and braising methods.

connoisseurs so obsessed with it, and how exactly does it work and cook differently than the standard method? The word sous vide is a French word that means under the vacuum, and it’s a method of cooking food in plastic under steamed water.
ROAST DIRECTIONS 1. Fill up half of an 8-quart pot with lukewarm water. Attach your sous vide machine, and set it on 130° F for 6 hours. 2. Sprinkle your London broil liberally with kosher salt and fresh cracked peppercorns. Place it into a Ziploc bag. Add olive oil, garlic cloves and the fresh rosemary sprig. Submerge the Ziploc bag in the pot of water, and the air will be suctioned out. Use two clips to attach the bag to the edge of the pot. Let it cook for 6 hours. 3. Once it has cooked for 6 hours, remove the London broil, place it on a paper towel and pat it dry on all sides. Sprinkle kosher salt and black pepper again on the entire surface of the meat. Don’t discard the juices left over in the bag; set it aside for the sauce. 4. Heat a skillet on high heat with 5 tablespoons olive oil. When it is at smoking point, add the meat and sear for 5 minutes on each side (searing not only the top and bottom, but the sides as well). Once its well seared, let it rest for 10 minutes on a cutting board covered with foil.
SAUCE DIRECTIONS 1. Place the diced onions in the skillet you seared the meat in and saute in the fond (the juices and fat released from the meat) on a medium-high flame until translucent. The fond will give the sauce an intense flavor. Add the mushrooms, salt and pepper to taste, and cook for another 3 minutes. Then add the chestnuts and wine. Add the leftover juice from the Ziploc bag in which the meat cooked. Bring the sauce to a boil and cook until it is reduced to half. 2. To serve, thinly slice the London broil against the grain, and pour sauce over it.
There are many reasons people love cooking sous vide. First, it makes it possible to have precise control over cooking temperature. Also, the food will not dry out. Even if the food is left in the bath longer than the directed amount of time, sometimes even by hours, it will not reach greater levels of doneness. There are, though, guidelines to help you maintain the textural integrity of whatever you are cooking. Additionally, cooking sous vide does not require excessive amounts of attention. There’s no standing over a hot stove making sure that the food does not burn. It simply requires heating the bath, dropping the food in and setting a timer. An entire shopping spree can be done while the perfect juicy piece of meat is being cooked. Another reason people like sous vide food is for its perfectly even cooking. How often does grilling

Pomegranate Braised
Short Ribs
Since pomegranates are eaten on Rosh Hashanah and they have such a deep, rich flavor, I paired them up with beef short ribs — the cuts of meats known to taste best when braised. Braising is a combination cooking method where the meat is first seared and then slowly cooked with infused liquids. This recipe is so juicy and succulent that the meat literally falls off the bone. The sauce is dark and rich with a hint of deep pomegranate flavor.
Short Ribs in
Sixty Seconds Short ribs are strips of meat and fat that are cut from the first five ribs of the ribcage. They are a very popular cut of meat, largely because of their intense flavor, their fall-off-the-bone tenderness and their beautiful marbleization. There are many methods for cooking short ribs; I chose to braise them because doing so makes them so succulent and adds depths of flavor.

INGREDIENTS 8–10 short rib pieces
7 shallots, diced
5 T. olive oil
4 cloves garlic, crushed
Kosher salt Pepper
2 cups Pom pomegranate juice
3 T. flour
1 cup beef stock
1 T. brown sugar
1 cup semi-dry wine
DIRECTIONS 1. Place the short ribs on a cutting board and liberally sprinkle salt and pepper on all sides. 2. In a deep skillet, heat the olive oil until it’s at smoking point, and sear all the short ribs for two minutes per side. Set aside. 3. In the same skillet (that has all the flavorful fond left over from searing), add the shallots and garlic to the pot. Saute until lightly golden. Add the flour and cook for another 2 minutes. Add the brown sugar and mix well. Scrape off all the good brown pieces from the bottom of the pot — it’s the best-tasting part! 4. Add the pomegranate juice, beef stock and wine to the pot. Add more salt and pepper to taste, and let simmer for 5–8 minutes on high flame. 5. Put the short ribs back into the pot, close the lid and place the pot in the oven on 350° for 2½ hours.
Plan Ahead Place the cooked short ribs and sauce into a 9x13 pan and freeze. Reheat on 350° in the oven until piping hot.

Rosh Hashanah... The Day Of Malchus! I cant believe we are here, yet again. Rosh Hashanah. The marking of a new year.
Having children in the house that are dealing with issues in school or otherwise. Health concerns. Marriage hiccups..
eat healthy and most probably keeps you up in till late hours of the morning. Common signs of an unfortunately common struggle, depression.
Are all great examples of real stressful situations.
But all of this can be taken away or at the very least reduced by changing just one thing.
Rosh Hashanah has many names. The literal translation is, Head of The Year. It is also called The Day of The Shofer. And my favorite translation is, The Day of Malchus If we could just stop and think about what it means to have Hashem as our King, as our Creator, as our Sustainer we would all be a lot more healthier. One of the underlying problems that seems to be the culprit for most of our issues with health is stress. The question rises; where does stress come from? Stress is mostly in the mind. Don't get me wrong. The stress we all feel on a daily basis are all very much real. Not having enough money to cover the bare essential.
These are not happening in your mind. But is it the actual act of not having money to pay the bills a stress OR is it the thoughts and worries that we give to the situation that causes the stress? We can not control the situations that happen to us. We can only control the thoughts and meanings we associate with any given situation. These stressful thoughts have a very real effect on the body in a mental and physical way. Some negative effect on our physical body include: Obesity. Heart diseases. Beside all the physical damage let us not forget the mental stress which then in turn leaves you drained and unmotivated to do exercise,
Believing that, Life happens for you not to you. Everything in this world is here for a reason. Everything in this world happens for a reason. Everything in this world happens for you. Even though we may not see it. Even if this is a really stressful time. If we can just stop and remind ourselves in the moment, in the hardest time: “Life happens for me.” We can start to look at the situation for what it truly is…
But how do we handle stress? We try and control everything. When things don't go according to our expectation we become irritated, annoyed, scared. We become stressed. Instead of taking a step back and trying to find what lesson we can take from it, we come up with 50 different terrifying outcomes that can come from the situation and fixate on all of them. This is a concept that is easy to tell someone but extremely challenging to live by. But if we can get into the habit of slowing down our life. Being Mindful. Reminding ourselves that life happens for each and every one of us, we might just alleviate our stress load a little bit at a time.
A lesson to be learned. Knowledge to acquire. With the belief that life happens for you, you are saying 'Stressful situations are there so I can learn, become stronger. To accomplish my mission in life.'
The next time you feel stressed, try to take a ten full and deep breathes and remind yourself, “Life is happening for me.”

Referred Pain Moshe Klein, Holistic Health Practitioner
Car crash sounds are something awful, Chaim noted. But it only took a second. He was still alive, his children were home, and the car in front of him — which had suddenly and unexpectedly braked — was relatively unscathed, a few dimples. His front end, on the other hand, was crumpled. He got out, called the police, filed the report, went to check himself out. He was still in one piece, it turned out. The next morning, a new lease was sitting in the driveway, and he was on his way to work. Which was why his lowerback pain a week later came as a complete mystery. Doctors confirmed it was nothing. A trip to the chiropractor (which he took despite his hesitation, because sometimes you’re desperate) didn’t turn up anything unusual either.
152 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 5, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
But the pain only got worse, and daily tasks, even sleeping, became impossible. He came to see me as one of those “Look, I’ve tried everything else,” clients, when a friend urged him to give holistic healing a try. His back was indeed fine. But he was not. The trauma of a car crash — however minor, however quickly dismissed — sat heavy on him, ignored and unattended. We just want to move on after an event, especially when we’re grateful to have come out unscathed. But it’s still there. And in Chaim’s case, it expressed itself in his lower back, a slow brewing trauma that began begging for his attention. Referred pain is any physical or emotional pain that finds expression in another part of the body. When we encounter the pain, we throw all sorts of
solutions at the symptom, which is the localized pain. And we often fail to take into account what is causing the pain, which could be a dislocation or pressure in another part of the body, a reaction to toxins, or emotional overload. By finding the source of the issue, we slowly begin to heal to the pain. Chaim’s healing took slower than he expected, but went way deeper. Who would have thought a simple crash would lead him to get in touch with his locked emotions? But three weeks after he saw me, he was able to bow down easily for Modim of Shemoneh Esrei. And boy, was he thankful. To learn more, listen to recorded lectures by Moshe Klein. Dial 1718-2984568 Press 1 for Health and then 2 for Holistic Health and Kinesiology. Come Yamim Noraim, the tefillos in shul are the very heart and soul of yom tov. Even women who rarely get out to shul make the effort to be part of those special moments when one can feel the hearts of the whole tzibbur turning to Shamayim on the wings of the uniquely inspiring tefillos. But what is it like to be the one leading the tzibbur, responsible for intoning these momentous tefillos on behalf of a whole community? Some baalei tefillah share their thoughts on the awesome responsibility and privilege.
THE MONSEY VIEW / 157
Every baal tefillah can remember the first time he was asked to daven. Whether the scion of a family of chazanim who is continuing the family tradition, or an enterprising youngster who is willing to spend yom tov out of town in order to gain experience at the amud and make some money, getting one’s first amud requires a certain amount of trust from the community. They will look for someone who has a pleasant voice — or a powerful one, depending on the size of the shul — and a sincere, serious approach to davening. While most well-established communities have a distinct tradition and a preferred nusach, some shuls allow the baal tefillah more flexibility to choose his tunes. The first few years involve very intense, time-consuming preparation of practicing the nusach and the tunes carefully. After that time, the nusach is generally more secure.
“The first year that I was asked to lead the davening, I was still in my twenties,” says Rabbi Leitner. “I took a tape of the nusach that I wanted to use, the nusach I was familiar with from my yeshivah days, and listened to it countless times. I practiced each part of the davening, getting every word right. More recently, it is no longer necessary for me to do that. I still look for new ideas, though. Whenever I get the chance to speak to other baalei tefillah, we eagerly trade ideas for niggunim for the parts of davening that are not so heavy on nusach.” Another longtime baal tefillah, Rabbi Rottenberg, says that since he has to concentrate less on the nusach, he can focus more on the content, on the actual meaning and deeper understanding of the words he is saying. “As a novice, you have to concentrate more on the nusach and nig-

gunim. But an experienced baal tefillah is fluent enough with the nusach that his mind is freer to delve into the tefillah. Now, instead of preparing tunes, I prepare for Yamim Noraim by learning the peirush hamilim.” What about the pressure? Most of us feel enough weight of responsibility just to daven our own tefillos properly on these exalted days, without bearing communal responsibility. “Yes, it definitely puts me under a lot of pressure,” says Rabbi Leitner. He candidly admits that his own kavanah is better during those tefillos that he is not shaliach tzibbur. “The first year that I davened Mussaf, I felt like my own shtilleh Shemoneh Esrei was ruined. I couldn’t concentrate properly because I was so nervous for what was coming. Now it’s gotten a little easier. I’m more used to the responsibility. Still, it’s big.”
Family Davening, especially on Yamim Noraim, is very much a family affair, with the widespread custom that on these days, children should daven in the same shul as their parents. But the children of a baal tefillah have to be resigned to the fact that while they may be in the same building, Tatty can’t help them follow the davening. “My eight-year-old son finds it hard that I’m at the amud,” says Rabbi Leitner, who davens MusPeople like fasaf on Rosh Hashanah miliar, beloved and Yom Kippur. “He’s too self-conscious to tunes that they stand next to me at the recognize and front, and it’s uncomfortable to be alone for so can sing along long.” Once older chilwith. dren are present, they can keep an eye on the younger ones. Also, older children of baalei tefillah experience the special pride of hearing their father leading the davening. Walking into shul to hear one’s own father’s voice rising above all else can make a child feel immediately at home. Rabbi Rottenberg says, “I just sent my daughter to seminary out of town, and she’s dejected at the thought of missing my davening.”
Giving Voice We’ve all heard of chazanim gargling salt water, downing raw egg yolks and wearing scarves to preserve their voices. Rabbi Leitner says that he invested in some professional voice training, which helps him sing without straining the vocal cords, but that is the limit of his physical efforts. “I don’t drink any potions. Sorry.” Every baal tefillah has his narrow escapes. Imagine the horror of waking up with a cold right before the Yamim Noraim. “Once, it happened to me,” says Rabbi Leitner. “On the second day of yom tov, I woke

One thing is clear, though: People like familiar, beloved tunes that they recognize and can sing along with. “A new tune is always a risk,” says Rabbi Rottenberg. “Once, I tried adopting a niggun that is quite widely sung. I couldn’t believe that no one in the shul knew it and there was no responsiveness! A community really gets used to their niggunim. I often have people checking in with me to make sure I will be using their favorite.” Every person has their own emotional highlights during the tefillos of the Yamim Noraim. Some wait for certain niggunim and passages that help them grasp the majesty and potency of the day. Rabbi Rottenberg, who leads a kollel minyan, says that Kol Nidrei is always an extremely poignant tefillah. “The olam is all there with you, ready for Yom Kippur but not weak yet, and the selichos and pizmonim are all so moving. Everyone sings together, and it’s a very uplifting time for me.”

Timing the tefillos takes a lot of experience, particularly on Yom Kippur. In some shuls, the major challenge of the day is to finish Ne’ilah on time. “It’s really difficult to pace it right, but you get siyata d’Shmaya to finish by nightfall, and not too early either. The important thing is to start chazaras hashatz at the right time, but sometimes it will take slightly longer or slightly faster,” says Rabbi Rottenberg, whose community is particular not to say the final Kaddish if it’s after nightfall. “I used to look at my watch, but by now I am used to it and can pace it correctly.” “Mainly, I keep in mind that I am not a chazan, but a baal tefillah. I try not to let the technical, or even the tunes, get in the way of the kavanah. The Ribono Shel Olam gave me the ability to daven, and I’m sure that it’s the feeling behind it, and the zechus of the tzibbur, that escorts the tefillos upward.”

There was barely a dry eye in the audience. They clapped and clapped, endeared by the beauty and depth of emotion in the original and soul-stirring tunes sung by a voice so melodious and gorgeous… It took their breaths away. They had come enthusiastic and did not leave disappointed. The masses of eager listeners were drawn to the celebrated chazan, who was fondly received wherever he performed. The famed Reb Yossele Rosenblatt had the audience mesmerized in yet another popular chazanus concert. As the crowds began to disperse, Yossele was approached by Cleofante Campanini, the director and conductor of the Chicago Grand Opera. After hearing Yossele’s outstanding performance, he was determined to have Yossele on his team. He drew up a contract listing seventeen upcoming concerts at which he wanted Yossele to be the starring soloist. His offer: $10,000 per concert! Cleofante reassured Yossele that he would respect his religious needs, allowing him to abstain from performing on Shabbos and granting him an all-men’s choir. He would even allow Yossele to appear on stage in his yarmulke and chassidishe kapote. Though the offer was tempting — in the early twentieth century, the average wage was $4 to $5 per week — Yossele remained strong. He remembered his father’s words, emphatically stated when as but a young child back in Europe he’d been lured by prime opera singers of the time: “He was born for the amud, and he will stay by the amud!” Reb Yossele’s refusal to per-

form at these opera concerts did not remain a secret and created a sensation of unfathomable kavod Shamayim. Perhaps it was this aspect of Yossele Rosenblatt’s character that set him apart from the many chazanim of his day. Despite expressing talent at the amud, many led personal lives that were not in the spirit of Yiddishkeit. Yossele, on the other hand, was simultaneously the embodiment of success in the world of music, composing many niggunim and classical pieces, and a sincere yarei Shamayim and baal tzedakah, truly worthy of being a shaliach tzibbur.
A Child Prodigy Born in Bila Tserkva, Ukraine, to a musical family, placed Yossele on the musical scene early on in life. His father, Reb Refael Rosenblatt, a
Sadigurer chassid, was a well-known baal tefillah. By the time Yossele was four or five years old, his singing prowess was already evident, and he joined his father’s choir in the largest shul in Kiev, where Reb Refael was chazan. Listeners could not get enough of the father-and-son duet, as Reb Refael became accustomed to davening with young Yossele harmonizing alongside him. Once, when the Rosenblatts visited Sadigur for Shabbos, Yossele accompanied his father’s singing at the amud. The child’s voice created such a sensation that the Rebbe asked them to sing again at the tisch. Duly inspired, the Rebbe blessed Yossele, and upon his suggestion, father and son began to travel throughout Romania, East Ukraine and Galicia as guest chazan and singer. During these trips, Yossele met many gedolim and rabbanim. On one occasion, Reb Refael brought his son to Reb Yechezkel of Shinev, zt”l. The Rebbe was in middle of a meal and honored his young guest to sing before they bentched. Unaware that many have the minhag of saying Al Naharos Bavel on weekdays, Yossele began to sing Shir Hamaalos instead. The Rebbe was visibly moved by the singing and then asked, “Why did you sing Shir Hamaalos? Is it Shabbos or yom tov today?” Without missing a beat, young Yossele responded, “When the Rebbe is with us, it is a big yom tov.” The Rebbe took his hand and said, “One day, the world will ring with your voice, but the main thing is that you remain an ehrliche Yid and use your kochos fully for the Ribono Shel Olam!”

This bracha accompanied Yossele all his life. Word of the wonder child was out. Wherever they went, large crowds pined to hear Yossele’s sweet young voice. On one occasion, a massive crowd crammed into the large shul of Lemberg in anticipation of hearing Yossele sing, and it was hardly possible for the chazan and his son to reach the bimah! Ultimately, they had to be carried in on shoulders of strong men. When in Krakow, Reb Refael wrote home to his family, “Already by the sixth Shabbos in Krakow, we have earned 750 gilden.” Great musical specialists in Europe heard of Yossele too. They wanted his talent. But Reb Refael was
Overview Reb Yossele Rosenblatt was born in 1882 in Bila Tserkva, Ukraine. He began his musical career as a young child, accompanying his father, a noted chazan, in song. Sadly, he was orphaned from his father when he was not yet bar mitzvah. At 18, he married and officially accepted his first position in chazanus in Munkacs, Hungary. In 1912, Yossele emigrated to America. His fame continued to spread as he performed worldwide. In 1933, while in Eretz Yisroel, Reb Yossele suffered a heart attack and passed away.

multiple voices, ranging from a warm baritone to ringing tenors, and was able to swiftly switch between them without cracking! His music was flawless — rhythmical and on pitch. He conveyed deep emotion, adding his trademark krechtz to accentuate the words he sang. His heartfelt davening was so alive that it swept the mispallelim into the mood and had them all humming along.
adamant — his son would use his kochos for the amud only! To ensure that Yossele would continue in the right direction, Reb Refael learned with Yossele daily, even while traveling. At every stop, he hired the best melamdim to develop his Torah learning further. This foundation stood Yossele in good stead throughout his life. Many years later, singers who accompanied him on concert trips recounted that late at night, after all the singers had gone to sleep, Yossele would remain awake at his Gemara.
Master Chazan After his marriage, Yossele took on his first steady position. For about a year, he was chazan in Munkacs, and then he took on a position in the prominent kehillah of Pressburg. Soon, the wealthy kehillah of Hamburg offered him a greater salary. Some of the baalei batim in the yekkishe kehillah could not tolerate Yossele’s chassidishe warmth that greatly

influenced his tefillah. It specifically bothered them that moving pieces brought him to tears. Once, the gabbai teasingly asked, “Perhaps there is a choleh in your family? Would you like to make a Mi Shebeirach?” Still, Yossele’s fame and popularity continued to grow. He became known for his extraordinary techniques and his golden voice. Music connoisseurs observed that it was as if Yossele had
Early Recordings His first recording debuted during the time that Yossele was chazan in Pressburg. It was recorded on the gramophone, an old-fashioned record player, the first device for recording and replaying sound. The record was an instant bestseller and served to expand Yossele’s global acclaim. Though the outmoded technology made for recordings that were not that clear or rich in sound, the albums have since been reformatted to make them pleasant for today’s discerning ear. In recent years, a set of three CDs, named Od Yosef Chai, was released by Mostly Music in Brooklyn. Yes, even today we can listen and be inspired by Yossele’s soul-stirring compositions!

In 1912, Yossele left for America. Some say he had already been given a chazanus contract by American visitors to Hamburg. Another version posits that Yossele arrived undistinguished, and his talent was revealed when he sang on a street on the East Side of New York City. According to the latter version of the story, among the admiring crowd were various gabbaim who began haggling over who would get him as chazan, and the wealthy Ohev Tzedek congregation in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City won him over, offering him a salary of $400 per month — three times the pay he had received in Hamburg. Yossele did not immediately acclimate to New York. He was dismayed by the state of Yiddishkeit in America, but remained staunchly faithful to his righteous upbringing. Once, when he and his choir gathered in the home of one of their mispallelim, he noticed that there was no mezuzah on the door. He asked the owner about it, who responded that he simply never got to it. The very next day, Yossele himself appeared at the doorstep and nailed in a mezuzah. Yossele also excelled in tzedakah, performing at concerts and banquets across the States to benefit chesed organizations and shuls, always adding a generous donation of his own as well.

Sound Waves in the Holy Land Shortly before Pesach of 1933, Reb Yossele traveled to Eretz Yisroel. Enthusiastic parades were arranged in his honor, welcoming him with pomp and esteem. Over the course of yom tov, thousands of Yidden came to listen to his tefillos and partake in his public Seder. He traveled the land, from Ohel Shem in Tel Aviv on the first day of Pesach, to a shul

His fame spread, and before long, his was a household name in all traditional Jewish homes. As a project aimed at strengthening Yiddishkeit in America, a few askanim introduced a frum newspaper. Yossele was from the first on board, contributing generously and even signing on as a financial guarantor for the paper. When the paper went bankrupt, Yossele was obliged to pay off the debt. At this point, Yossele relinquished his chazanus position and embarked on an international singing tour to earn the funds he now desperately needed. He held concerts in more than ten countries. Soon, the Great Depression of 1929 caused many to go bankrupt, and people no longer had the peace of mind to enjoy performances. Returning to New York, Reb Yossele became chazan of the Anshei Sfard Shul in Boro Park.

Music connoisseurs observed that it was as if Yossele had multiple voices, ranging from a warm baritone to ringing tenors, and was able to swiftly switch between them without cracking! for the amud in the historical Churvah Shul on the Shabbos of 23 Sivan. The shul teemed with hundreds of mispallelim, all enthusiastic and eager to feast their ears and hearts on an emotion-laden rendition of Kabbalas Shabbos. True to their expectations, the atmosphere was highly charged. A spontaneous dance broke out on the streets after davening and lasted for more than two hours. On Sunday morning, Yossele visited Kever Rachel, where he sang a moving Kol Beramah. That same evening, he had terrible stomach pains. A doctor was summoned and diagnosed a heart attack. A few hours later, the beloved, worldrenowned chazan passed away. Ah, Yossele! The name conjures an image of a sweet voice bursting forth in song. It resounds with soul-stirring, passionate music. It resonates with smooth, vibrant chazanus presented by a master artist. It is rich in excellence and rich in legacy. Yossele — the name will forever be linked with the regal title he earned himself, “The King of Chazanim!”

Shofar In the Torah it says about Rosh Hashanah, “Yom teruah yihyeh lachem.” The mitzvah d’Oraisa of Rosh Hashanah is the blowing of the shofar, which Chazal determined is a minimum of thirty kolos, but a total of 100 kolos. • One must have kavanah to fulfill the mitzvah of Tekiyas Shofar. • The baal tokei’a recites two brachos to which the kehillah answers “amen.” • One should not say “Baruch Hu u’varuch Shemo” to these brachos. • One should stand during the brachos and for all the tekiyos. • It is assur to speak from the beginning of the first bracha until Ashrei. • If one wants to be yotzei all the tekiyos, it is forbidden to speak until after Shemoneh Esrei of Mussaf. • Al pi halacha, all men above bar mitzvah are mechuyav to hear the shofar. Chazal tell us that all women and girls over the age of 12 accepted Tekiyas Shofar upon themselves, and are therefore also mechuyav to hear Tekiyas

Shofar. • A woman is mechuyav to hear 30 kolos of tekiyos. Many women have accepted upon themselves to hear all 100 tekiyos. • The 30 kolos consist of three lines of tashra”t ()תשר”ת, three lines of tasha”t ()תש”ת, and three lines of tarat ()תר”ת. • The tekiyos do not have to be consecutive. Therefore, if one is interrupted in the middle of Tekiyas Shofar, one may make up the missed tekiyos during Mussaf (or after davening). • However, one is obligated to hear each tekiyah, fully, without interruption. If, for example, a child cries in the middle of Tekiyas Shofar, causing someone to miss part of a tekiyah, that person is not yotzei and has to hear the whole line again. For example, if someone missed part of the first tekiyah of a tashra”t line, they have to hear the entire line again. However, one can hear it later on, during Mussaf or after davening. • When one hears a tekiyah, one has to concentrate on which tekiyah of that line it is. • If a woman is unable to hear the tekiyos in shul, and someone is blowing shofar for her, the woman should make

the bracha herself (unless the man blowing is also yotzei with this blowing).
Tashlich • Tashlich is a minhag and not a chiyuv. • While it is preferable to do Tashlich on Rosh Hashanah, one can also do so during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. • If one cannot make it to a body of water to say Tashlich, it is recommended to say Tashlich wherever one happens to be.
The Second Night of Rosh Hashanah
• Both Rosh Hashanah days are considered by Chazal to be the same yom tov, a “yoma arichata” (even in Eretz Yisroel); the two days are halachically considered “one long day.” Since there is a question as to whether one should make the bracha of Shehecheyanu during Kiddush the second night of Rosh Hashanah, the poskim suggest that one should preferably either wear a new garment (one not bought frequently) or have a new fruit worthy of a Shehecheyanu. If one doesn’t have either of these items, a Shehecheyanu should be said anyway. • If possible, women should have in mind the new garment or fruit when saying Shehecheyanu during licht tzinden (candle lighting).
Aseres Yemei Teshuvah Since the days from Rosh Hashanah until after Yom Kippur are yemei hadin, the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah were me-

• Zachreinu L’chaim: If one forgets to say Zachreinu and reminds oneself before saying the Shem Hashem at the end of the bracha, one may still say it. If, however, one has already said the Shem Hashem, one may not say Zachreinu. • Mi Kamocha: If one forgets to say Mi Kamocha before saying the Shem Hashem of that bracha, one may still say it. If one has already said the Shem Hashem, one may no longer do so. • Hamelech Hakadosh: If one forgot to say Hamelech, but one reminds oneself immediately thereafter (toch kedei dibur) and before the next bracha, one may still say it. If a full second passed or one has already started on the next bracha, one may not say Hamelech there, and has to start from the beginning of Shemoneh Esrei. • During the weekdays of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, one adds into Shemoneh Esrei the words “hamelech hamishpat” at the end of Hashivah. • If one forgot to say “hamelech” and one davens nusach Ashkenaz, one must go back to the beginning of the bracha Hashivah Shofteinu. If one finished Shemoneh Esrei and has said the yehi ratzon at the end of Shemoneh Esrei, one should repeat Shemoneh Esrei. • If one davens nusach Sefard, one does not need to go back to Hashivah, because the word “melech” is said before the words “ohev tzedakah u’mishpat.”

TEFILAH AND K AVANAH PART 3 UP UNTIL NOW, we dealt with halachos pertaining to kavanah before starting to daven. Now let’s address halachos pertaining to kavanah during tefillah itself. The halacha says that the most important thing is for one to have kavanah of the simple meaning of the words.1 This is especially true of the first bracha in Shemoneh Esrei, where, essentially, if one didn’t have kavanah, he should go back and daven again. The only reason we don’t do this today is because it is very likely that even the second time around, we still won’t have kavanah.2 One big challenge to kavanah is habit. One carelessly mumbles the words while one’s mind is elsewhere. This habit, though, is so strong that one doesn’t even forget to bow at Modim or strike his chest by Slach Lanu! How can we break this? One eitzah is to pause after saying two or three words3 or to say the entire bracha in one breath.4 This can help break one’s habitual way of davening. However, one should make sure that by saying the bracha in one breath, he doesn’t rush through it. If all that also becomes habit, then one can change his pace at every tefillah to avoid autopilot mode. Another eitzah is to daven from a siddur and follow along with one’s finger. Today there are siddurim that even have short explanations of each word that help one concentrate by elaborating on the meaning of the words.5 Others say that during the Amidah it is better to close one’s eyes. Practically speaking, one should do whatever helps him have more kavanah.6

These ideas may seem lofty or even impossible for a mother whose children are tugging her skirt as one of them cries, or for a woman who has company for Shabbos and just remembered that she didn’t take out the chicken to defrost. However, it’s important to remember that Hashem never commands us to do something beyond us, and these strategies and halachos were given for our benefit, and not as a means to produce more stress. They are worth trying for a mitzvah as precious as tefillah. Learning new explanations of the different parts of tefillah can certainly also improve one’s kavanah. This can be an opportunity for a mother to instill the chashivus of davening and kavanah in her children. When her little ones see Mommy trying so hard to focus on this time with the Borei Olam, it touches them. The Chofetz Chaim suggests that before starting each bracha, one should think about what the bracha is about.7 It can be a one- or two-word reminder. For example, before starting Refa’einu, one should stop to think that he is davening for health. This forces one to stop after each bracha, potentially helping one break the habit of davening on autopilot. The halacha also states that it is very important to at least have kavanah when reciting the first bracha, at the end of each bracha, and at Modim, so it is worthwhile to know the meaning of and stop before saying each of these parts and think about what one is about to say.8 Often a person takes on the kabbalah to have kavanah during tefillah,
but then, after failing to have kavanah for one bracha, or for one tefillah, or for one day, he gives it all up. The commentaries compare this to a person who lost a diamond — will he be so foolish to be careless with the rest of his diamonds? No! If anything, he will be even more careful with
See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 98:1; see Biur Halacha 101, “veha’idna,” regarding one who remembered that he didn’t have kavanah in the first bracha, before he finished Shemoneh Esrei.

what he has left after seeing how easy it is to lose them.9 When working on kavanah during tefillah, one must realize that there will be times when he will fail, but that is no reason to stop working on kavanah during davening. This is especially so in light of the seforim that say that Hashem collects all the parts of tefillah that one had kavanah in and puts them all together to form a complete tefillah with full kavanah.10 The idea of “all or nothing” in this area is only from the yetzer hara. It is worth pointing out the Gemara that says that at the end of the Amidah, Rav said a personal tefillah, at the end of which he said, “We should have life where You (Hashem) will... temalei lanu es kol mishaalos libeinu l’tovah.”11 The commentaries explain that Rav added the word “l’tovah” because sometimes a person asks Hashem for something that is not actually good for him. Rav was asking Hashem not to give him something that was not for his good, even if he davened for it.12 One should realize that, at the end of the day, Hashem knows what’s best. No tefillah with kavanah goes unanswered, but fortunately for us, Hashem decides how they should be answered. May we be zocheh to grow in our avodah of davening and thereby see the coming of the goel tzedek bimaheirah b’yameinu. The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

YOU DAVEN WHERE? When it comes to referring to a beis tefillah, the names are as colorful and varied as Yiddish types and stripes. Ashkenazic Yidden generally use the Yiddish term shul, and some Sephardim call it kal (from kahal) in everyday speech. Spanish Yidden daven in a sinagoga, while the Portuguese in an esnoga. In Persia the house of tefillah is known as kenesa, similar to beis haknesses (as it’s known in Eretz Yisroel), but their term is derived from Aramaic. Two names for smaller-version shuls are shtiebel and kloyz.
The word shul is derived from the same origin as the German word schule (school).
Most shuls also function as a beis midrash — a house of learning — usually housing smaller separate rooms dedicated to Torah study.
The Largest Shul in the World: BELZ SHUL, KIRYAS BELZ, YERUSHALAYIM The main sanctuary of the Belz shul has a sitting capacity of 10,000 people. (This main room, though, is only open on Shabbos and yom tov.) In addition, there are many shtieblach where minyanim are held every few minutes and a large room for tishen, as well as rooms for other functions.
The Belz shul holds the record for the largest aron kodesh. It can accommodate 70 sifrei Torah! The entrance placement of this shul is designed to manage the crowds and control the traffic. Each of its four main entrances is accessible from a different street.
This shul, whose construction took 15 years, is a replica of the original shul built in the town of Belz in Ukraine, which interestingly also took 15 years to build. 208 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 5, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
The Largest Shul in the United States: CONGREGATION YETEV LEV D’SATMAR, WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK This shul has a total capacity of 7,000 people.
It is hard to believe, but in a race to have the building complete for Rosh Hashanah, its construction took only 14 working days! Over 200 people (125 employees and 80 volunteers) worked 18 hours a day (taking a break for Shabbos, of course) to reach that unbelievable goal.
The Oldest Active Shul in the United States: TOURO SYNAGOGUE, NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND This colonial-era shul was built for Kahal Kedushas Yeshuos Yisroel from 1759 to 1763, then under the leadership of Chazan Isaac Touro. Its congregation dates back to 1658 and was first comprised of Spanish and Portuguese colonists. It is the oldest surviving shul in the United States.
In 1946, Touro Synagogue become a National Historic Site.
One of its most famous artifacts is the letter George Washington wrote to the congregation shortly after visiting the shul in 1790, in which he wrote many supportive sentiments, among them that religious communities in the U.S. will enjoy freedom of worship without fear of interference by government.
Europe’s Oldest Active Shul: ALTNEUSCHUL, JOSEFOV, PRAGUE Where does the name alt-neu (old-new) stem from? Some say that when the shul was built, it was called the New Shul, and subsequently, when newer shuls were constructed, it become known as the “old-new” shul, hence the name Altneuschul. Another explanation is that it derives from “al tenai — ַעל ”ּתנַ אי ְ (on condition), which sounds the same as alt-neu, as it is said that this shul was built with some stones from the Beis Hamikdash on condition that they are to be returned when Moshiach comes. In a similar vein, some explain that the name reflects the statement of Chazal that in galus, shuls are built “al tenai” that they are used for certain non-sacred purposes, as discussed in halacha.
It is said that the body of the Golem of Prague lies in the attic of this shul with the Prague community’s genizah, and a Nazi agent is purported to have died under suspicious circumstances after entering the genizah. (However, renovation in 1883 and further exploration of the attic found no trace of the Golem.) The first three meters of stairs leading to the attic were removed, and there’s no public access to it.
The Shul that Took Its Hat Off: TIFERES YISROEL SHUL, YERUSHALAYIM The Tiferes Yisroel shul in Yerushalayim, also known as the Nissan Beck Shul, after its founder, was a prominent shul in the Old City in the 19th and 20th centuries. When construction for the shul began, the funds were slowly raised, and the building progressed as the money became available. After ten years, it was an imposing structure, but still without a roof. In November of 1869, Emperor Franz Joseph (who did a great deal for the Yidden in Austria) paid a visit to Yerushalayim and toured its institutions. Seeing the large shul, he inquired as to why it had no roof. Rabbi Nissen Beck wryly explained, “Your Majesty, the synagogue has doffed its hat to you.” Franz Joseph picked up on the fundraising plea beneath his words and generously donated the money needed to complete the structure. Thereafter, to the locals, the roof of the shul was known as “Frank Joseph’s Cap.”

I’m at the building where the missionaries are holding the children.
But we might have to close this investigation soon. From my snooping around and a discussion I had with the children, it seems they are going to Germany soon. The illegal missionary activities will then no longer be on our soil.
Tell the Israelis that the funding for the plane tickets is coming via a donation from an Israeli chocolate factory.
The Zurich police found them, but they don’t want to act because the children are flying elsewhere soon.
From where do they have so much money?
I guess we’ll have to send a group of our own to save them from the clutches of the missionaries.
Oh, it’s well-lit here at the anti-missionary organization. I’ll be able to hear what they are planning.
RECAP: A Zurich police officer stops one of the Israeli boys being held, and the boy tells the officer that they’re being moved to Germany and that funding is due to arrive from an Israeli chocolate factory.
