(Inbox, Issue 168) Thank you for being me’orer the public about the problematic areas for kohanim where trees overhang from cemeteries to roads. We would like to add another location that has the same issue. Greenwood Cemetery runs along McDonald Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway at the main entrance to Boro Park. There have been numerous krias harabbanim over the years forbidding kohanim from passing those streets. Most people entering Boro Park from Monsey (and Williamsburg, Manhattan, etc.) pass that cemetery. About 20 years ago, rabbanim established a Vaad Hakohanim through R’ Cheskel Roth’s beis din to oversee the trimming of the trees so that the outermost lanes can be kashered on both streets. At that point there was a krias harabbanim from the rabbanim of all major kehillos (R’ Avraham Hakohen Pam, zt”l; R’ Shloima Hakohen Gross, the Belzer Dayan, zt”l; the Debretziner Rav, zt”l; the Viener Rav, shlit”a; R’ Chaim Leib Katz, shlit”a; R’ Chaim Duvid Katz, shlit”a, the Satmar Dayan; and many more) to give a hechsher for outermost lanes only. They wrote clearly that it’s only valid for a year from that date, and it needs to be maintained continuously. People remember that the Tzeilimer Rav, zt”l, was considering some heteirim, but after inspecting the area, he assured it as well. In order to cut the trees, permits need to be obtained from the city, which takes time, effort and money. Then a company needs to be hired to do the work, which is quite expensive. Since the city only allows a small amount to be trimmed at once, this process needs to be repeated pretty often. As of 2015, the Vaad has shut down and the trees have not

been cut since. Lately there has been some effort to reopen the Vaad to provide hashgacha, since the trees are very overgrown (especially on McDonald Avenue). People driving on their own can easily avoid the problem by entering Boro Park through a different route. More care needs to be taken when traveling with other means of transportation, like taxis or buses, which usually use that entrance. Rabbanim have worked with the bus company to make some changes so that the area could be avoided. After considering all options, they determined that it is too complicated due to several reasons. They say that the responsibility lies with the kohanim. We have discussed it with the head of the old Vaad Hakohanim, R’ Yitzchak Stein, shlit”a, the Faltitshaner Dayan, as well as many others (among them, R’ Bentzion Hakohen Strasser, shlit”a, Nitra Dayan; R’ Chaim Duvid Katz, shlit”a, Satmar Dayan; R’ Meir Hakohen Mayesz, shlit”a, Belzer Dayan; R’ Yoseph Yisroel Eisenberger, shlit”a, Skverer Dayan), and all said that before entering a vehicle, one should make sure that it will not pass the cemetery on the problematic lanes. If anybody has more information to share or any questions on this topic, we can be contacted at taharaskohanim@gmail.com. Taharas Kohanim

(Re: An Immunity Boost, Issue 168) I enjoyed reading the article entitled An Immunity Boost by Blimy Wassertheil about some ways to strengthen our immune system before the winter sets in. I was, however, quite dismayed to find that there was not one mention of receiving a yearly flu shot. While many people will vehemently state that it’s hardly effective or has side effects, the CDC and AAP still recommend the flu vaccine for most individuals. At the end of the day, all the fresh animal fats and cold-pressed oil in the world will probably not prevent someone from contracting the flu under typical circumstances. Yes, those are great ideas for overall protection against everyday illnesses, but diseases such as the flu can be deadly and should be dealt with more aggressively. R.N.

(Re: The Cannabis Cure-All, Issue 168) Thank you for the informative article on CBD oil. According to my own research on the topic, while different cannabis varieties may have different levels of the compounds, the main difference between THC and CBD is that THC is found in the leaves of the hemp plant, while the CBD is mostly in the seed oil. Therefore, smoking or otherwise

using marijuana leaves releases the THC, resulting in mind-altering effects, while ingesting the seed oil greatly benefits the body due to its oxygenating power. Besides, there is some controversy regarding the origin of the ban on hemp plants in the USA, some blaming it on the emerging tree-paper factories who wanted hemp-paper out of the competition — using the so-called toxicity of THC as an excuse, when it is in fact not as harmful as it is made out to be. I’d be interested in hearing your input on the above points. Also, it is important to note that people who take hemp seed oil may have elevated THC levels in their blood when tested. This should be clarified with potential employers, who may request these tests, in advance. I was wondering if pure CBD oil also has this issue, or not. As an aside, hemp seeds are very beneficial by themselves. In parts of Europe, they are ground into butter (like peanut butter) and smeared on bread. They are rich in omega-3 fat and therefore very healthy. I don’t think it’s legal to produce it in the USA so far. Keep good information coming! Sincerely, C. P. RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: Thank you, C.P., for writing in. According to my research (and this was verified by KosherGold, as well), CBD is actually not found in hemp seeds at all. The seeds produce hemp seed oil, which is full of vitamin E, omega-3 and omega-6, but not CBD or THC. The leaves and flowers are where the CBD is concentrated. As for the paper lobby conspiracy theory: Who knows? In every controversial topic there are hidden truths, ignored blatant truths, cover-ups and straight-out lies. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s even worth trying to figure out the so-called “real” cause of the cannabis ban. It will take many hours, a lot of siyata d’Shmaya and a whole lot of passion to begin detangling all the threads and tracing them back to the their truthful beginnings. And even then, you might just find that there was no conspiracy to begin with! In this case, I’d let sleeping dogs lie.
NOT ALL THAT GLITTERS IS GOLD (Re: The Cannabis Cure-All, Issue 168) I would like to inform you that the article about CBD in the recent issue of The Monsey View is not objective and that the safety of CBD is not accepted by everyone. I studied this industry and this oil very well, and even though hemp oil is legal and has some benefits, CBD oil, despite having less than 0.03 percent THC, can still cause other major side effects, like dizziness and the inability to focus. CBD is still a topic of debate, is still not fully regulated and is still not legal in all states. Manufactures and producers are still trying to come up with a CBD

oil that will not have the effect of dizziness or inability to focus, but at the moment, they still do not have that. It is unacceptable to feature an article about a topic as sensitive as this one. People who don’t know anything about it can end up trying a product that has major side effects. In order to prove the claims Kosher Gold has made (that they test their product in third-party labs, and that it is real without side effects), they need to be able to test THC levels. There also needs to be tests about dizziness and non-focus. Please ask this company to provide these lab test results and COA of the product, as well as clinically proven documents of the claims they made in regard to the product’s benefits and effects. There are some companies that offer clinically-proven and 100 percent lab tested hemp oil without the effect of THC. Only in such a manner can one trust or offer such a dangerous product in the Jewish market. Zev Ostreicher KOSHER GOLD RESPONDS: Dear Zev, Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. Please be reassured that we researched this product extensively before deciding to make a pure and high-quality CBD oil with a strict hechsher available to our community. We spoke to top doctors around the world, attended medical conferences, and visited many extraction facilities and labs before making our first kosher run. We are now about a half year into the process of providing this highquality product to Klal Yisroel, having sold to hundreds of customers. Throughout these past six months, we’ve received steady and consistent positive feedback from people who have used our product to overcome various issues and illnesses, and in general, all are very happy without any of the side effects you mentioned. There have been a few isolated reports from customers who expe-

rienced brief dizziness or lightheadedness after taking the oil, but it is a mild and not long-lasting effect, and usually the customer himself tells us that the benefits of the oil far outweigh the negative effects of temporary dizziness, and that he plans to continue taking it. The dizziness comes from a slight drop in blood pressure (CBD has been used by patients to lower blood pressure), and it is usually easily mitigated by drinking a cup of coffee. We do prepare people for this possibility ahead of time when they purchase the CBD oil, and as a policy, we make a concerted effort to be in contact with our customers even weeks or months after they’ve purchased our oil, in order to guide them to maximize the healing effects of the oil, and we always ask them to notify us of every little change they detect. Is it possible that you tried CBD oil yourself and experienced dizziness and lack of focus? If you were a Kosher Gold customer, we would simply advise you to take a slightly smaller dose. That would easily solve the problem. As far as loss of focus, we haven’t yet received any complaints about that. The United States Department of Health and Human Services has a patent on CBD for, among other things, stroke recovery. It’s hard to imagine that the U.S. government would be interested in CBD for stroke recovery if it causes mental unclarity or lack of focus. CBD is commonly used for ADD/ADHD, which are focus and concentration deficiencies. CBD is well known throughout the entire world as a powerful and effective treatment for the most serious conditions, many of which people suffer from in our community. While admittedly unpleasant, dizziness or lack of focus, when compared to the life-shattering effects of chemotherapy, intestinal dysfunction, diabetes, high doses of steroids, chronic pain, depression, neuropathy, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, etc., are quite minor, to say the least, and tolerable (and, once again, only a rare occurrence). Given its consistent ability to treat these and a seemingly endless host of the most debilitating condi-
tions, to avoid trying CBD because of a rare but possible temporary and harmless lack of focus or dizziness would be unfortunate, and possibly even ill-advised. You mentioned that CBD isn’t legal in all states. It is in fact legal in all 50 states. As far as documentation of its benefits, any personal medical information would require authorization from the patient, and we won’t compromise our customers’ privacy unless we receive their permission to do so. We can contact a few customers, if you’d like, and ask them for permission to disclose their information. Kindest regards, Isaac and Shmuel Dovid The KosherGold Group P.S. Please see the results of our third-party lab test at the left. SHMUEL DOVID SHARES: Dear Zev, I, personally, benefited from Kosher Gold CBD oil, and I am happy to share my own experiences with you. After undergoing emergency cervical spinal stenosis surgery this summer, I encountered life-threatening post-operative complications, as there was unexplainable inflammation of my spinal cord, which caused partial paralysis, resulting in an inability to walk even short distances without great difficulty, climb stairs, or even get dressed in the morning. I was sent by my surgeon to numerous specialists, and none were able to help me. They all said that there’s nothing that can be done — no medicine could help, and surgery was out of the question, as the area was too sensitive, and the procedure would endanger my life. Hopefully, in six months to a year, my spine would heal on its own. Then, someone told me about the incredible anti-inflammatory abilities of CBD oil, and a few weeks after beginning to take Kosher Gold CBD oil, I suddenly saw total and complete relief from all paralysis symptoms. I now use the oil myself, and live a normal life, just as before, baruch Hashem! Shmuel Dovid The KosherGold Group

RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: My goal in writing this article was to present the community with the facts about CBD oil, as this is a hot topic spreading over the world. Better that people should have the basics in hand when making their decision regarding whether or not to use it than to make a decision based upon nothing. To that end, I shared the history of CBD oil and the current progress this oil is making in the medical world. And I also stated, “We know little of side effects, medication contraindications or specific dosing requirements. As of now, a Cochrane review of medical cannabis recommends that cannabinoids be reserved only for people who have difficult conditions that are uncontrollable with pharmaceuticals or other means.” It is not my place, nor was it my intent, to encourage or discourage use of CBD oil.
WHILE THE EPIDEMIC RAGES Dear Fellow Monseyites, There is a very powerful measles epidemic that is affecting our community, with many children hospitalized. And though I don’t want to broach the general topic of vaccines, I do want to strongly encourage the community — even those who generally do not vaccinate — to vaccinate their children against the measles. I, unfortunately, know of several people who suffer lifelong, devastating and severe complications from having had the measles as a child. Please do not let your child be unvaccinated against measles during this horrible epidemic. I really don’t want to see any Jewish child suffer. To help mitigate the possible side effects of the vaccine, I have developed a special herbal formula to be taken before and during the week after the vaccine is administered. Please ask for the Vaccination Companion by The Herbari in any of the local health food stores. For those who are already vaccinated but would like to take extra preventative measures against contracting measles, or for those who have already contracted measles and are fighting the virus, I recommend Herbari V-free, a powerful antiviral; and Full Complex Siberian Adaptogens, to strengthen natural immune response. Dr. Esther Apter P.S. There are also a lot of terrible MRSA infections being passed around. Many cases can be treated without antibiotics with use of Herbari ANTI-MRSA formula, used both as a compress as well as taken internally. The formula and directions for use are available at all local health food stores. Large abscesses can be drained with little trauma through the use of leeches. I can be reached at 845425-5467 or esapter@gmail.com.

ENJOY YOUR DAY OFF (Re: A Babysitter’s Take, Issue 167) Dear Babysitter, I can almost relate to you, since I also get paid by the hour. I used to do early intervention and drove out of town to a few clients, where I got paid by the hour (I’d punch in by phone when I’d start working and punch out when I’d finish my few cases and paperwork for the day). When there was no work, there was no pay. Now I work in a special-ed classroom, but the pay works the same way — I punch in when I come and punch out when I leave. I don’t get paid for yom tov, legal holidays or snow days. As a matter of fact, right now I am at home with one of my kids who is sick. A few years ago, I once complained to my mother about all of these unexpected days off. She shared with me something she had heard from a rebbetzin: “Hashem has already decided how much money I will earn this year. If He gives me a snow day, it is a vacation for me because I was not meant to earn the money I would have earned that day.” Since hearing that, I know to make the best of my days off because it was meant to be. I don’t think it is so fair for a babysitter to charge a monthly fee. This past June we paid our monthly tuition, extra babysitting when school was over, and for the first week of
46 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 17, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
camp, while my paycheck was more or less the same. I think it is yashrus to charge per hour when the child is there. Obviously, babysitters have the challenge that they don’t get days off; they only get less kids at certain times of the year. I think we really owe our babysitters so much hakoras hatov for always being there for us when we need them. And for those who don’t get a salary, as far as your day off/less work: Use the day to introspect and to recognize and appreciate that parnassah comes from Hashem. A Paid-by-the-Hour Worker
RE: IN SEARCH OF A SOLUTION (Inbox, Issue 167) In addition to taking medication prescribed by a doctor, I’d like to share some tips that are imperative to entirely get rid of pinworms. • Treat the entire family, as it is very contagious. Repeat dosage after 14 days. • Since pinworms can easily spread by mouth, clean under the child’s fingernails. Keep fingernails very short and brush them often. Wash hands thoroughly after using the facilities and before eating. • Launder sheets, towels and pajamas daily in hot water
and dry in hot dryer. Wash between one wear and the next. I recommend to wipe the top and front of the washing machine and dryer after use as an extra precaution. • Wash/vacuum floors, chairs and/or sofa daily. • Use wet wipes to clean child. Dispose of wipes in Ziploc sandwich bags. Wash hands well with soap after cleaning child. Don’t forget to ask Hashem for help in eradicating the problem. A Caring, Anonymous Contributor
I’m responding to the reader looking for help with pinworms. The brand All Natural Essentials carries a homeopathic remedy called “Pro Meir’s Successful Para Free,” which I’ve given to my children for three months very consistently, together with “Colloidal Copper” from the same brand. Prior to this I’ve tried medication, but that only helped for a very short while. Since I’ve used these remedies, my children have not been suffering from pinworms. I’ve also noted that my children are much calmer. Wishing you good health and lots of hatzlacha! D.T.

HASHEM’S DEEP AND ABIDING LOVE FOR each and every one of us springs out from every pasuk in the Torah. We are so accustomed to hearing about Hashem’s love for us that we may not realize just how astounding it truly is. Hashem, Who created the heavens and the Earth, Who has the power to do anything — He loves us and wants only good for us. He is our Father. In this week’s parsha, Hashem tells Avram, “I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse” (Bereishis 12:3). The wording here is reversed. First it says Hashem will bless, then it says those who bless us; then, first it says the one who curses us, followed by the words saying that Hashem will curse that person. The Vilna Gaon explains this as follows. A wealthy person can give a far greater blessing than a poor person, because the wealthy person has experienced greater pleasure in life and can bless others accordingly. A poor person, on the other hand, can give a stronger curse because the poor person has experienced more pain and can thus curse others more harshly. Therefore, Hashem will first bestow blessing upon those who will bless us, so that those people can first experience bracha and therefore give us a better bracha, but Hashem will wait to curse people who curse us until after they have cursed us so that their curse should not be as strong. This is the love of a Father. The closest analogy to Hashem’s love that we have in this world is the love of our parents. This is one explanation for the fact that the mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim is listed among the first five of the Aseres Hadibros. The first five of the Aseres
52 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Hadibros are mitzvos bein adam l’Makom (between us and Hashem), while the second set of five mitzvos of the Aseres Hadibros concern our relationship with other people, bein adam l’chaveiro. The mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim — honoring our parents — is listed in the first set, which has always given me pause to reflect. Thinking in terms of a parent’s love as an analogy for Hashem’s love gave me an idea. We just passed through the Yamim Nora’im. We have all learned since we were very young that on Yom Kippur we attain atonement for having wronged another person only if we have made amends with that person and been forgiven. If Shimon damages Reuven’s car, it is unlikely that Reuven will be appeased if Shimon does not apologize and get the car fixed. But what if we have wronged our parents, chalilah? A parent will forgive almost any wrong their child might commit, even if the child does not go to any great lengths to undo the damage other than apologize. If Reuven’s son were to do the same damage to Reuven’s car as Shimon had done, chances are that Reuven would tell his son to forget it. Our parents forgive us more wholeheartedly than any other person could, and for doing far less teshuvah for our wrongs. Because of this, if our relationship with our parents were treated in the Torah like any relationship bein adam l’chaveiro, then we might get off too easily for so much more harm in that relationship come Yom Kippur. Perhaps this is why Hashem placed the mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim among the mitzvos bein adam l’Makom. Hashem has to personally hold us accountable for our behavior in our relationship with our parents. But even holding us to a stricter level in our relationship with our parents is an expression of Hashem’s love for us. It would not be good for us at all to have a relationship where we can almost do no wrong. Hashem wants the best for us, and that includes being the best people we can be. If we would have true hakaras hatov for our parents, then that alone would lead us to treating our parents better than we treat others. Similarly, focusing on Hashem’s infinite love for us should lead us naturally to a great feeling of hakaras hatov to Hashem, and a desire to please Hashem. May we all channel these feelings into action and dedicate ourselves ever more deeply to the task of dedicating every fiber of our being to live a true Torah life.

Alarm Spreads As Local Cases of Measles Reported A measles outbreak in Yerushalayim has Monsey parents concerned after cases of the infectious disease have been reported in our area, ostensibly spread by unvaccinated Israeli visitors over Sukkos. According to Haaretz, 213 new cases of measles were reported in Yerushalayim in September, more than half the total number of cases documented for the entire year. Experts in Eretz Yisroel are expecting the total number of cases reported to top 2,000. Israeli health officials stepped up their efforts to increase vaccination rates in August when they noticed a rise in the number of new measles cases reported. Infectious disease expert Professor Yechiel Schlesinger, director of Shaare Zedek Medical Center’s Wilf Children’s Hospital, said that there are many residents of Yerushalayim who have not vaccinated their children simply because they fail to understand the ramifications of that decision. According to one doctor who chose to remain anonymous, approximately five to ten new measles cases are being reported daily in Yerushalayim, making it virtually impossible to locate everyone who may have been exposed to the disease, further exacerbating the problem. Closer to home, an October 3rd alert issued by the New York State Department of Health warned of an Israeli traveler with a confirmed case of the measles who may have exposed people in Newark Airport and New Square over Sukkos. Another advisory of a second Israeli traveler with the measles was issued on October 13; several reports that have surfaced of other measles cases in our area have yet to be confirmed by the DOH as of this writing. The latest DOH warning affects the Monsey area and beyond, where potential exposure may have occurred on the following dates and locations. October 4: • Congregation Bais Elazar, 26 Voyager Court, between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. • Mia’s Reflexology, 191 South Main Street, New City, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. October 5: • Lifetime Gym, 10 Van Riper Road, Montvale, be-
tween 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. • Wesley Kosher, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. • Congregation Borov, 2 Parker Road, between 6:45 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. October 6: • Congregation Borov, 2 Parker Road, between 9 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. October 7: • Costco, between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. October 8: • Care 365, between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. October 11: • Westchester County Medical Center, between 3:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. All times listed above include an additional two-hour window after the traveler left the area during which the measles virus remains alive, both in the air and on surfaces. Measles symptoms include a high fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes and can appear anywhere from 7 to 21 days after exposure. Individuals who are considered to be protected or immune to the measles include those born before 1957, those who have had two doses of the MMR vaccine, those who have had the measles or those who have had laboratory testing confirming their immunity. Anyone who is not immune to the measles and was at the above locations during the times listed is urged to contact their local health care provider as soon as possible. The recent measles alerts create an even larger concern in light of a report released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the Associated Press, an estimated 100,000 children born in 2015 and 2016 have not received any of the recommended childhood vaccinations, which offer protection against 14 diseases. “This is pretty concerning,” said Dr. Amanda Cohn of the CDC. “It’s something we need to understand better and reduce.” The DOH recommends that all children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, one between 12 and 15 months of age and the second between four and six years of age.
The Rockland County Department of Health will hold a free MMR vaccine clinic on Thursday, October 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Community Outreach Center, located at 21 Remsen Avenue, Suite 201, in Monsey. Call 845-364-2997 for more information.

IT HAD BEEN SO LONG,
SO MANY YEARS Esty Mendelowitz The last time I had visited Kever Rachel, I was in my last zeman in yeshiva in Eretz Yisrael, “chapping arein” before my upcoming wedding. I had come to daven, to ask Mama Rachel to intercede on my behalf, to pray for me to merit a bayis neeman b’yisrael along with my kallah. It was quiet, spooky, almost. There were two soldiers whispering so ly to each other at the entrance, their conversation punctuated by crackles from their radios. There was an old man with a long white beard who seemed to be a part of the furniture at Kever Rachel, chanting pesukim of tehillim. And me, the young American chassan. It was a dangerous time, but I was a young bochur, determined to visit the famous Kever Rachel before I returned home. It was so many years ago, and so much has changed. I came again this summer for a family simcha. My own family simcha! Baruch Hashem, my oldest daughter was getting married to a fine young man from Bnei Brak. We inquired about visiting Kever Rachel before the wedding so my family and I could daven at this auspicious place. We chose from a variety of times to go, and entered a full bus with dozens of people heading to the same place. I marveled at the difference between this trip and my lonely trip years earlier. When we arrived, we saw hundreds of men, women, and children who had come to Mama Rachel for the same reason - do daven and ask Hashem to listen to their prayers, in the zechus of Mama Rachel. But it wasn’t just visitors. Off to one side was a table full of
yungeleit learning with a hasmada I hadn’t seen since my yeshiva days. There were piles of kvittlach near the kever, from around the world, each with names and heart-breaking requests.
Kever Rachel was completely transformed. I noticed a small sign on the wall with the logo of Mosdos Kever Rachel, so I asked an Israeli fellow next to me, who introduced himself as Eli, if they were the ones responsible for the miraculous regeneration at Kever Rachel. “Yes!” he said, the exuberance on his face belying the deep pain I could sense in his dark eyes. “You see those men learning there, on the side?” I nodded. “It’s not just them. Mosdos Kever Rachel has four kollelim here, on site, each at different times of the day. They are also the ones who maintain the area and subsidize the armored bus we took to get here. “I try to come here at least once a week,” he continued. He bit his lip and his eyes filled with unshed tears. “My daughter, you see, she’s not doing so well. I come here to daven at Mama Rachel’s grave as o en as I can. It’s the only thing that brings me comfort.” He turns away, and so do I, as I attempt to allow him a bit of privacy. I resolve to come back more o en, finances permitting. And at least if I couldn’t come, I knew I could now send in my kvittel, and it would be brought to Kever Rachel. Dinner on the Grill BY: LEAH STERN After being gifted with a George Foreman, for years, I served grilled supper every Tuesday. That original piece of equipment has long since met its demise. I now own an extra-large nine-serving George Foreman and enjoy experimenting with it. This three-food-group menu is a hit! One of the advantages of this supper is that you are left with no dishes to wash besides for a knife and the grill. For quicker cleanup, line grill with parchment paper, but you’ll have to give up the signature grill marks on the food.
Timetable for the working mother: • Marinade chicken before leaving to work. • Place potatoes on grill a half hour before suppertime. • While potatoes cook, prepare the zucchini slices and set your table. • Cook zucchini next and grill chicken last, because that is enjoyed best fresh off the grill.

Disappearing Chicken Strips These are so delicious, they literally walk off the grill. Slice onions very thinly and they melt unnoticeably into the chicken.
INGREDIENTS 4 chicken cutlets 3 T. sliced white pearl onions ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 T. ketchup 1 T. honey ½ tsp. salt
DIRECTIONS 1. Cut each cutlet into 6–7 thin strips. 2. Slice onions into paper-thin slices. Mix in a plastic bag with rest of marinade ingredients. 3. Add cut chicken pieces and coat all pieces with marinade. 4. Cook on heated grill for 3–5 minutes. For better flavor, allow to marinate 2–8 hours before cooking.

Potato Wedges You won’t believe these potatoes are not fried! A red potato is a softer spud, making it most suitable for grilling. To cut cooking time in half, slice potatoes into thin slices.
INGREDIENTS 1½ lb. small red potatoes 1½ T. oil 1½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper
DIRECTIONS 1. Wash potatoes well and cut into quarters. If potatoes are larger than an egg, cut into 6–8 wedges. 2. Combine oil, salt and pepper in a bag. Add potato pieces and coat with oil. 3. Place on heated grill, and pour a little oil over tops of potatoes. Grill for approximately 20 minutes.

With the busy lives we lead today, having a hired hand is often not an option. Sometimes we just need someone to help us go that mile that really isn’t extra. Even basic cleanliness or standard foodstuffs can seem impossible to a mommy-on-the-go, or even to one who spends her day at home. For many of us, hiring help is simply a trick that helps us stay sane. But how much responsibility do you hand your hired help? How do you juggle the need to bring someone into your home and yet retain the highest standards of kashrus and safety? And, of course, how do you make the person you hire feel like a human being created b’tzelem Elokim, while at the same time, ensuring that though they feel respected, they understand their limitations in a heimishe home? Here are some tips and tales from those who’ve been there and done that.
KASHRUS Perhaps you know the story of the heiliger Abarbanel, in which he was invited to join the king of Portugal for a meal, and while there, was tested by the king. Identical meals had been prepared in both kosher and non-kosher forms and were laid out upon a beautiful round table. Sometime during the
meal, the Abarbanel was asked to to say a few words (though some say to view the royal gardens though the dining room windows), after which the meal continued. But the Abarbanel no longer ate the food in front of him. When the king asked him why, the Abarbanel explained that his attention had been diverted from the food, and therefore, it was forbidden to him. At that point, the king exclaimed that halacha had protected him, for the table was actually designed in the manner of a lazy Susan, and with one spin, the portions had been rotated, causing a non-kosher portion to replace the kosher food. There are also modern-day stories to illustrate the importance of being vigilant over our food when nochrim are near, such as the famous swapped-salami story on the airplane. But how does that play out in a kosher home? “I have a wonderful housekeeper who comes when I’m not home,” one woman told me. “And to avoid issues with yayin nesach, I make sure
to remove all wine and grape juice from the refrigerator, because she might want to look for something to drink, or need to clean the refrigerator.” But simply removing non-mevushal wine or grape juice might not be enough. In researching for this article, I’ll admit that I was shocked to learn halacha requires not only grape juice and meats to be kept under lock and key when the homeowner steps out, but dishes too. Of course, ask your local rav about your personal situation, as there are caveats to this condition, such as when a Yid comes and goes unexpectedly or when the worker has never cooked in the kitchen and is therefore not likely to do so. But the basic rule remains: Dishes should not be accessible to those who don’t keep kosher. And for good reason. “I returned from shopping one day, and my daughter informed me that the housekeeper had taken a milchig cup, used it, and then washed it in the fleishig sink,” one woman told me. “I was really surprised because she’d never taken from my dishes before. I’ve only served her in plastic.” When it comes to workers who feel comfortable in the kitchen or have helped to cook, mistakes are more likely to happen. In fact, the horror stories abound: Chicken found heated in the milchig toaster oven. Schnitzel fried in butter on the stove — and served to the children, no less. Workers who’ve zapped their brought-from-home lunches in a kosher microwave… To that end, one woman advised me, “Make all personal use of the kitchen off-limits to workers, except for water from the sink. Better yet,

Though it happened long ago, the message of the Mortara case rings true in this day and age, reminding us that anything can happen when we’re not looking. Six-year-old Edgardo Mortara was “converted” by his nanny when no one was looking, and the Catholic church seized the child to be raised with the goal of becoming a Catholic priest. (The church has since “apologized.”)
install a water cooler and provide plastic cups.” It’s also a great idea to set aside a small table or mini fridge for workers’ convenience and stock it with drinks and snacks that they can take at will. This cuts down on the motivation to use your things when you’re not looking, and keeps them happy and energized, as well. Other tips for keeping your kitchen kosher involve side-stepping the issues completely. “I’m a nervous wreck when someone who doesn’t keep kosher is in my kitchen,” a balabusta admitted to me. “So I just tell my cleaning help not to clean the milchig side at all, ever. That way I don’t have to worry about her not washing her hands or forgetting to take a fresh towel when she switches sides.”
CARETAKERS Ideally, our loved ones should always be under the care of family members, but sometimes that’s not feasible. Even when we must hire someone from the outside, a woman who’s been in that position, cautions to “never, ever, ever fully trust anyone to be completely alone in the house with someone who is unable to express themself. That goes for a very young child, an adult with dementia or someone with special needs.” On that point, another mother chimed in with her tragic story, “We had a wonderful, creative, kind, caring man work for us for fifteen years. He did gardening, home repairs — you name it — all to a high standard. And then he left, suddenly. Turns out he had a history as a child abuser. And we’d trusted him, in our home. For fifteen years. We’re still reeling from this fact, even now, while the police are looking for him.” When it comes to abuse, even competent adults who are able to fully express themselves can be intimidated into not telling when they are ill-treated. When one must rely on another human being for daily functioning, one becomes terribly dependent. “Use your eyes and nose,” one woman tells me. “Look for dirt, smell for signs of bad hygiene. Examine your relative’s skin occasionally; make sure they are clean and cared for, without wounds.

Never take a worker’s word for anything. Investigate if you feel something’s wrong.” And never be predictable. Make sure that someone, even a neighbor or a friend, walks into the house at odd intervals to make sure that your parents or children are being properly cared for. And, of course, nanny cams placed around the house can keep you up to date on what really transpires while you’re out. Even when other loved ones are near, safely ensconced at home, we must be on guard. One mother shared with me that she’d asked her children what the nanny always did to calm their colicky baby, and was told that the nanny would hold the baby over the unlit stove, turning on the gas. He always fell right asleep… Another parent cautioned against hiring illegal workers, because aside from the fact that it’s, well, illegal, there is an element of danger I was shocked you might not think about. One time last year there was to learn that a burglary while the parents halacha rewere away, and the live-in maid who was watching the quires not only family, shouted until the burgrape juice glar left. She refused to call 911 because she was worried about and meats to being deported! If you absolutely must hire be kept una worker to be in your home der lock and with your beloved family, at least know whom you are hirkey when the ing. Know their name, adhomeowner dress, phone number, and preferably hire them from steps out, but an agency that’s run a background check. dishes too. And, of course, I’ve heard over and over about cameras, how they can be used to dissuade evil-doers from evil-doing — though that should never be assumed to be a guarantee. There are just too many scary stories floating around out there. Stories of parents who discovered their children had knelt and said “bedtime prayers” with their nanny, stories of children who’d been exposed to things you’d not want to see in your worst nightmares, stories even of parents who’d come home to discover they didn’t have whom to parent anymore… Only a few years ago, a hired worker who’d been trusted over a decade to work in a family’s home attempted to kidnap a child. Police found the worker at the train station, the baby girl disguised as a boy. Baruch Hashem, no harm had come to her, and she was soon reunited with her family. But do we really want to take the chance? All tips aside, common sense says don’t leave your diamonds in the care of just anyone. And what are our children if not the most precious of gems?

If you’re in search of a supper recipe that is made from scratch, has a maximum combined prep and cooking time of 40 minutes, doesn’t require chicken to be defrosted upon starting, can be prepared with one hand, requires disposable ware only — and should preferably also have the option of enlisting the help of little hands — I’d venture to say that you are a working mother like me.
othing brings my well-fed mother’s guilt to the surface more than arriving home after a day of work, filled with a sense of doom upon remembering that supper is not even in the beginning stages yet. Yes, I have a Crock-Pot. I also have a delayed-timer oven. Both of them are put to use occasionally, and what a heady feeling it is to walk in after a workday and take in the aroma of ready supper. (Just like a regular housewife, I pride myself. My kids aren’t really suffering that I work, I assuage the ever-present niggling worry as I prepare a large cup of coffee so I can welcome my kids in full faculty.) But on so many of my blessedly hectic mornings, Life gets in the way, and dinner receives not even a thought before I turn my back on my housework and head out to work. And so, at 3:30 p.m., with baby in arm (how can I put him down after not seeing him all day?) and in conversation with the older ones as they vie to share the details of their day, I survey the contents of the freezer, the fridge — and then in desperation, the pantry — and my heart sinks to my knees. After scrambling to get the ingredients together, supper is up and merrily bubbling, its smell starting to fill the kitchen. And... out of the corner of my eye, I see little hands inching their way to the pantry door, and before I can react, they fill their little tummies with food that’s far from homemade and far from nutritious. Because I missed the boat. Once again. Their hunger outpaced my meal. I shouldn’t be working. Should have my groceries more organized. Should make good nutrition my priority. Should never leave to work without a meal plan. Should have a wholesome supper ready as the kids walk in and weave beautiful tales as they eat their fill. I’ve gone through dozens of desperate ideas of putting together last-minute suppers, some that have failed, some that have worked amazingly well. Worthy of note is the time when I found myself with no cutlets on hand and had the brainstorm of preparing pulled chicken from chicken bottoms. Quickly placing them into a bowl of lukewarm water to defrost, I diced an onion, and while they

GOOD TO KNOW THE GROCERY HAS THESE ITEMS • Extra-clean chicken bottoms; requires minimal cleaning. • Ready breaded/marinated chicken • Ready frozen diced onions • Ready frozen sauteed onions • Ready frozen cubed potatoes/sweet potatoes • Ready breaded cauliflower/broccoli • Ready breaded eggplants • Ready peeled/cubed zucchini • Pre-checked rice • Pre-sifted flour • Pre-cut parchment paper
sauteed, started tearing off chicken, piece by painstaking piece. Moral of the story? The results were delicious, but it would have been faster for said chicken bottoms to roast than be removed from the bone! OH, and you want to know what type of supper addresses all the caveats above? I’ll share one. Take a tray of ready ultra-thin chicken cutlets out of the freezer, and place it in a 9x13 pan filled with lukewarm water. Preheat oven to 350°. Give a kid or two a sealed sleeve of Snackers to crush by hand (the greatest sensory experience!), and place a 9x13 pan with salted water to boil on the stovetop. Prepare a plastic plate with a mayo/spice mixture and another plate to pour the crushed snackers into. Take a bag of frozen sugar snap peas and place it into a lined (with pre-cut parchment paper) disposable pan with oil, salt and a sprinkle of ground white pepper. Dip each cutlet into the mayo mixture and then into the crushed snackers. Line a cookie sheet with a pre-cut parchment paper and place the coated cutlets on it. Put your baby down. Place the cutlets and sugar snap peas (covered) into the oven for 20 minutes. Discard plastic plates and snacker sleeves. By now the water

GOOD TO HAVE THESE ON HAND AT ALL TIMES • Rubber gloves — for chicken cleaning, onion dicing or vegetable peeling, if you have a few minutes extra before leaving to work • 9x13 pans — health risks aside, cook pasta or potatoes in them (puncture the bottom to drain), use them as a disposable broiling pan for broiled chicken (place lid on top of pan and cut slits through them, broiling chicken on top), and of course, bake anything in them. • Cutlets — stock them in thins and in thicks, in strips and in nuggets. Batter-fry them, stir-fry them, bread and fry them, grill them, or bake them. Definitely the quickest in the chicken department. • Large Ziploc bags for marinating, mixing, dipping, and even making cookies and hand-mixed cakes.
is probably boiling — add the pasta and finish cooking. When done, open the pan lid at the corner, and with an oven mitt on each hand, tilt the pan over the sink to allow the water to drain. Season pasta. Remove the food from the oven and serve.
OTHER QUICK FOODS TO KEEP IN MIND • Potatoes and franks (I know! For real emergencies only) with soup from the freezer. (Oh, you don’t have any? Fresh salad or cut-up veggies never disappoint, unless your fridge is empty of that too.) • Tuna patties (no defrosting required!) with mashed potatoes and cooked (frozen) corn on the cob. • Deskinned chicken capons — grilled or fried with some oil and spices, served with cooked rice and baked (frozen) green beans
CUT COOKING TIME • Coat potatoes in flour and spices, pour oil onto them and bake, uncovered, on high heat (even as high as 425°) — tastes delicious and gets ready much faster. • Use ready boiled water for your pasta. Add salt, bring to a boil in pot and add pasta. (Do not boil pasta in percolator!) • Roast chicken bottoms in a pot instead of baking them, and if there’s no time for even that (1½ hours for defrosted chicken), broil them.

(salt, garlic powder, oil and a dash of white pepper does magic on these). Cooked pasta with marinara sauce and cheese, served with Israeli salad. Cheese and veggies grilled on wraps, pita or ready pizza dough and guacamole. DISCLAIMER: High heat kills nutrients; aluminum pans should not be used with heat or acidic foods; processed and commercially prepared items are full of chemicals and no-goodfor-yous; frozen produce does not compare to fresh, tastewise nor nutrient-wise; tuna has mercury; franks have nitrates; corn does not really qualify as a vegetable, and neither does tomato sauce, for all intents and purposes.

A DYING MOTHER’S FINAL REQUEST Sara Biderman, Jerusalem mother of 14, fought a long and brutal battle with cancer. Through countless rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries, she remained brave for her children. Though her family had sunken hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt, her focus remained on her survival: she must make it, for the kids. Tragically, her will was not enough to save her. The day that Sara passed away, the Biderman family gathered round her hospital bed to say their goodbyes. Knowing that her time on this earth was coming to an end, she made one last, urgent request. In her last moments her greatest desire was that of every mother: “Take care of my children,” she pleaded. Those present knew they must honor her request, though it was unclear how. Two months have passed since Rebbetzin Biderman’s petirah, and the shadow of grief still looms heavily over her home. Of 14 children, 7 still reside in their modest apartment in the Geulah neighborhood. The youngest is just 8 years old. Bereaved of their mother, the children are lost, suffering

It’s about time. When I lived in Eretz Yisroel and explained to my co-workers that we only have six weeks of maternity leave in the United States, they were in shock, as if I’d be telling them I came from a third-world country. “By six weeks, I’ve barely even begun to open my eyes,” said one of them. “Who can think of going back to work then?” It’s true. Ask anyone who’s gone back to work six weeks after a new baby, and if they’re honest, they’ll tell you — it’s not enough time. And leaving your six-weekold newborn at a babysitter is not for the faint of heart. Although New York’s new Paid Family Leave doesn’t come anything close to the generous maternity leaves given in other countries, at least it’s a step in the right di-

rection. And it can be taken in addition to the disability pay you receive for maternity leave, though not at the same time. Another plus is that these laws apply not only for the birth of a baby, but also covers you if you adopt or foster a child, care for a close relative with serious health issues, or care for loved ones if a family member is deployed in active service in the military. The best part is that you are guaranteed the same or comparable job after you come back from leave. Sounds great, right? Where do I sign up? Here are the deets you need to know.
WHAT IS PAID FAMILY LEAVE, AND WHEN DOES IT START? Governor Cuomo signed the Paid Family Leave bill into law in 2016, but it only began to be implemented in January of 2018. This year, workers can take up to 8 weeks of time off, while earning 50 percent of their weekly pay. The number of weeks of leave and amount of pay will increase in phases until, by 2021, employees will be eligible for 12 weeks of paid leave, earning 67 percent of their weekly pay. (Note: The pay is capped at 50 to 67 percent of the statewide average weekly pay.) DO I QUALIFY? As of January 1, 2018, most employees who work in New York State for private employers are eligible to take Paid Family Leave. If you are a public employee, your employer may choose to offer it, but is not obligated to at this time. Also, to be eligible, a full-time employee (20+ hours a week) must have already been employed for 26 consecutive weeks when applying, and part-time employees must have been employed for 175 days, but they don’t have to be consecutive. FOR WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES CAN I TAKE PAID FAMILY LEAVE? Both men and women can take Paid Family Leave to bond with a newly born, adopted or fostered child, care for a close relative with a serious health condition, or assist loved ones when a family member is deployed abroad on active military service. When caring for an ill relative, the list of family members you can take care of under the law is quite expansive, and includes step-parents, step-children, parents-in-law, grandparents and grandchildren. DOES IT HAVE TO BE 12 CONSECUTIVE WEEKS? Not at all! You can take the paid leave time all at once, or even a day at a time. HOW DO I APPLY? If applicable, you must notify your employer at least 30 days before the start of the leave. If it’s not something you could have anticipated, let him or her know as soon as possible. Then you’ll need to fill out the Request for Paid Family Leave form (available on the NY State website: paidfamilyleave.ny.gov/paid-family-leave-forms) and submit it to your employer who will fill out their section. Next, submit the form and supporting documentation to your employer’s Paid Family Leave insurance carrier. The insurance carrier must pay or deny your request within 18 calendar days of receiving your completed request.
October 17, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 99 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS? Unlike disability pay, Paid Family Leave can only be taken after the child is born/adopted/fostered. Also, you cannot take more than 26 weeks of combined short-term disability and Paid Family Leave in a 52-week period.
ADDITIONAL GROUPS Starting this Sunday, Oct. 21 איהה
IS MY HEALTH INSURANCE VALID WHILE I’M ON LEAVE? If you are lucky enough to be receiving health insurance from your employer, it will remain active while you’re on leave. However, if you contribute to the cost of said health insurance, you’ll need to continue making the payments, even when you’re not at work. WHO IS PAYING FOR ALL THIS?

You knew there was a catch, right? Well, there is a catch, but it’s a small one. Paid Family Leave will be funded by a weekly payroll tax deducted from the employee’s paycheck. But it’s just about a dollar or two a week, so it won’t impact your take-home pay by too much. The tax ensures that employers won’t have to shoulder the complete financial burden of their employees’ leave. It will pay for insurance to cover the cost to the business. So if you’re an employer, this new law won’t be as expensive for you as you may have thought at first.
This new law is a breath of fresh air. It prevents employees from having to choose between a salary and caring for their loved ones. It’s about time!

We mentioned last week that the halacha says that only knots that aren’t especially tight — which means they are tied in a way that they will eventually get undone on their own — and are made to last less than 24 hours (or, in case of need, less than one week) are muttar to make and undo on Shabbos.1 We mentioned that an example of this type of knot is a bow on a single knot and concluded that when tying dresses, shoes, gartels, etc., one should make a bow on top of a single knot with the intention to undo it within a day (or, in case of need, within a week). UNDOING A KNOT THAT FORMED UNINTENTIONALLY
So it’s time for Sarala to go to sleep, and you’re taking out her bow. But, oh no! As you’re untying it, you accidentally pull on the wrong string… and now you have a double knot! And of course, you remember from last week that tying and unty-
ing a double knot is assur! What should you do now? Sometimes when tying or untying a bow that’s on top of a single knot in a muttar scenario, the strings get tangled and create a strong knot similar to that of a knot on top of a knot. In such a case, the poskim say that even though it is a tight knot, one may undo it since one had not intended to tie a forbidden knot.2 GARBAGE BAGS
Tying a garbage bag on Shabbos gets tricky because it’s a knot that one doesn’t intend to undo. But you did offer to host Cousin Shimmy’s sheva brachos — which involves several garbage bags! So how may we tie garbage bags on Shabbos? The halacha says that a single knot (the kind that one makes on shoes before making the bow on top) is muttar to make, even if it is meant to last for more than one day. This is because a single knot does not hold well and so does not have
the halachic status of a knot. Therefore, one should only tie a garbage bag with a single knot, as it isn’t considered a halachic knot and can even be made with the intent to last a long time. However, one should not tie it closed by taking both ends of the garbage bag, holding them together in one hand, and tying a knot as though it were a single string (an overhand knot), nor make a bow on top of a single knot. And, all the more so, one should certainly not tie a knot on top a knot (a double knot) on garbage bags.3 In general, since the reason a single knot is not considered a halachic knot is because it does not hold well, the poskim say that one shouldn’t make even one knot using a thin metal string, since the metal material holds well even with one knot.4 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.
1 See Tur, Beis Yosef, Shulchan Aruch 317:1. See Mishnah Berurah 317:6, which says in the name of the Pri Megadim that one day is twenty-four hours. There is a machlokes whether one is allowed to make a knot only for less than one day or less than one week. The Ben Ish Chai and the Kaf Hachaim rule that one is not allowed to make a knot unless it is made to untie within one day. See Biur Halacha 317:4 “Sheinam,” which is also machmir unless it is a makom tzorech.
Mishnah Berurah 317:23 in the name of the Chaye Adam; See Chazon Ish, Orach Chaim 52:17.
2
This is a machlokes haposkim. The Maharil Diskin is not sure about the halacha. Rav Nissim Karelitz, shlit”a, and Rav Elyashiv, zt”l, hold that it is asur mid’Oraisa, while Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l, and the Minchas Yitzchak hold it is muttar to make as long as it is not a professional knot. Since it is a machlokes regarding an issur d’Oraisa, one should be machmir. 3

THE COLORS OF CABS Not many things are as iconic in New York as yellow taxis, although, surprisingly enough, the first New York taxis were not yellow, but red and green. In 1907, 600 metered gas-powered cabs (the first of their kind on our shores) in those colors were imported from France to NYC by the New York Taxi Company.
Over the next few years, more taxi companies opened, each one painting their entire fleet one color to distinguish them, and the streets of Manhattan were soon graced with taxis ranging from brown to white to red to black — and even checkered!
It was five years later, in 1912, when the Yellow Taxicab Company was established in NYC by Albert Rockwell, who, according to sources, chose the color yellow at his wife’s suggestion; it was her favorite color, and she thought it would stand out. Yellow Taxicab took their color so seriously that they were involved in 50 lawsuits, which they brought against independent operators who also painted their taxis yellow! These days, only medallion taxicabs (those with a special permit) in NYC are allowed to be yellow — and are allowed to be hailed.
But most of the credit for the popularity of yellow cabs goes to John Hertz (of rental-car company fame), who started a taxi business in 1907. After he arranged a study, which concluded that yellow, with a touch of red, is the most visible color from a distance — about as advantageous as it gets for passengers craning their necks in an attempt to spot a car to hail — he went on to manufacture his own cabs for his Chicago-based taxi service, Yellow Cab Company. In fact, the color he chose for his car rental company, Hertz Corporation, was… yellow!
Not just any yellow will do for yellow cabs. The exact color is dupont m6284 — the same color used for school buses for its visibility powers.
108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 17, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
So what are the apple-green NYC taxis all about? There was no shortage of yellow m6284 paint, if that’s what you’re thinking. Those “Boro Taxis” specifically service the outer borough locations, like Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, as the limited yellow taxi cabbies, who tend to “destination shop” to make the routes most lucrative, never wanted to take calls this far, and were definitely not available for hailing in these non-center locations.
FACTS ON THE FLY Hertz opened the Yellow Cab Company because it was a great way of putting the traded-in cars from his rental business to good use.
According to a recent survey, taxi drivers have the tenth most dangerous job in the U.S.
When the word TAXI is lit up on a cab, it means the taxi is available, and when the light is off, it is occupied.
About 2,000 yellow cabs are decomissioned each year.
Where can you sleep in New York for just $39 a night? In a former taxi, a 2002 yellow Honda Odyssey, which a man outfitted with a mattress and other (yellow!) amenities, parked on a legal spot in Long Island and listed as a vacation rental. No facilities included, but the views are fantastic. Does anyone fall for this? Oh yes; Mr. Powley, the mastermind behind this hotel on wheels, says he has attracted visitors from as far as Singapore and as near as Carrol Gardens in Brooklyn.
LONDON LAWS In London, people with diseases like rabies, anthrax, cholera or tuberculosis may not travel in taxis. “Taxi rank malaria” is mentioned in the British Journal as a means for spreading disease.
Another illegal act in London is to shout “Taxi!” in an attempt to hail a cab, as it may distract the driver. In fact, if a potential passenger does so, the taxi will not stop for him.
Don’t travel with large denominations in London, since its taxi drivers are legally not obligated to give change.
TAXI REGULATIONS Quantitative regulations limit the number of taxis allowed on the road. In New York, for example, a permit is required for cabs, enabling the city to restrict the number of licensed taxis. This started during the Great Depression, when the Haas Act of 1937 established the city’s medallion system, because too many cabbies were seeking work and not enough people were able to afford the luxury.
Qualitative regulations control the vehicle and driver standards, both which must qualify for riding. Also, according to these regulations, each vehicle must be insured. Fare regulations set a maximum or minimum fare, so there’s control over the charges, if needed.

I’m calling Gavriel from Israel now to ask him to send the money. The long arm of the antimissionary organization will quickly reach us. We must escape from here. We’re on the way to an abandoned building. Listen, we need you to transfer the money for the flights right now.
Go up quickly and quietly. The money will come soon and then we’ll fly. We’ll be able to fulfill all your dreams.
I’m getting sick of this. I want to go back to Israel.
Back to Mutty and Shimi, Avraham’s friends
I spoke to him yesterday, and it seems things got a little complicated there. And you know that my father’s factory is practically going bankrupt.
I really miss Avraham. They promised a lot, and so far we have nothing good.
So I decided to hide a recording device in the grove behind our clubhouse. I’m planning to turn it on before 4 o’clock. That’s when Gavriel goes out to have his suspicious conversations.
Right, you told me it’s obvious that someone from the outside is destroying the factory.
Yes, I’m withdrawing the money from the chocolate factory now and will transfer it. Just send me the details of your request to my private fax, so I’ll be able to bill you later for my hard work.
Recap: The children, hidden in the trunk of a car, escape under the noses of the anti-missionary agents.
